[War of Faith]

[Episode 19]

What do you want?

I want to see if our men are outside.

It's none of your business.

Hello.

Front Desk?

What do you want to eat?

I...

I want a roast duck.

And a bottle of brandy.

I'm fine with

any fruit.

Whatever they have.

A roast duck, a bottle of brandy, and some fruit

to Room 605.

Hurry up.

This place is nice.

You sure know how to live it up.

Mr. Kang will be here soon.

You'd better think through

what you have to say.

Don't worry.

I'll ensure Mr. Kang's ten gold bars

are worth it.

Sir, your room is this way.

Hello?

Who are you looking for?

Hotel Restaurant?

I need a sandwich.

Thank you.

Are you crazy?

This is a guest room.

Hello.

Hotel Housekeeping?

Wrong number!

605.

Mr. Kang.

Captain Lin.

Mr. Kang.

Tell me.

Who shot you that day?

Mr. Kang.

Don't worry.

I'll tell you

what I know.

But what if

you send someone

to arrest me,

kill me,

and take my gold bars back

after I tell you?

Li Shengda!

What do you want?

I want to talk to Yu Shiqing.

What do you mean?

You'll kill me

after I tell you.

At this time,

only Yu Shiqing

can guarantee my safety.

Is this

related to Mr. Yu?

Yes.

Hello?

Master.

Mr. Kang is calling.

Mr. Kang. What's up?

Mr. Yu, we have an informant

who's about to confess.

He insists on talking to you.

What informant?

A communist traitor

who was almost killed by his party.

He said after he confessed,

you'd guarantee his safety.

Fine.

Let's hear

what he has.

Tell us.

Who shot you

that night?

Shen Jinzhen.

Shen Tunan's sister, Shen Jinzhen?

Yes.

She eliminates traitors for the Communist Party.

Think carefully.

If she can prove

she wasn't there that night,

you're dead.

I'm not quite sure

about

the shooting.

But I'm sure

she was the killer in the ward

last night.

I-I was on morphine

and unconscious in bed.

Suddenly,

there was a unique fragrance.

Then I saw someone

flying in from outside the window.

She even tried to smother me with a pillow.

Fortunately, Captain Lin came in time

and saved me.

In the hospital this morning,

I smelled that fragrance again.

It's Shen Jinzhen.

Women use similar perfumes.

It can't be evidence.

She uses

some Italian

handmade shampoo and body wash.

Mrs. Yu gave them to her.

It's the only set in Shanghai.

Please verify this

with your wife.

Sure.

Wait a minute.

I once ran a fragrance store.

I...

I know a little about fragrances.

When I entered the ward last night,

I did smell

a faint aroma

but didn't pay attention to it.

Yes.

It must be her.

I've asked.

It's a gift

from the rep of the Italian company OTO Melara.

My wife

did give one set to Mrs. Shen.

There are only two in Shanghai now.

One is for my wife

and the other for the Shen family.

This person is important.

You must

protect him at all costs.

Understood.

Gather everyone.

Take action!

Yes!

Let's go!

Shen Tunan's sister

is a communist,

and even eliminates traitors?

Interesting.

Shen Tunan.

To think

you'd end up like this.

If it's really Shen Jinzhen,

it's major.

She works for the key department of the arsenal.

If she's convicted,

so many others would be unveiled.

Big fish!

Big fish.

Mr. Kang.

Can I take the gold bars now?

What's the rush?

We haven't caught her

or convicted her.

But don't worry.

If she's a communist,

let alone some gold bars,

I can even help you with your identity

and employment.

Mr. Kang, I don't want such superficial stuff.

I just want the gold bars.

You lied to Lin Qiaosong

and he almost got suspended.

Do you think I can be

easily tricked by you?

Team 1, go to Shen Residence.

Team 2, go to the station.

Team 3, go to the dock.

Team 4, go to the arsenal.

We must arrest Shen Jinzhen!

Yes!

Go!

[Astor House Hotel]

This is the train station.

This is the dock.

Station.

Understood.

Shoot her if she resists.

We'll watch closely.

We won't let Shen Jinzhen escape.

Understood.

[Please be quiet]

Dear passengers,

the train to Suzhou has been delayed

for half an hour.

Please wait patiently.

Dear passengers,

the train to Suzhou has been delayed

for half an hour.

Please wait patiently.

Make way!

Excuse me.

Make way!

Make way!

Sit.

Hello?

Mr. Kang's order.

Li Shengda is not there, right?

Go in.

Why?

Go in!

Why?

What...

What are you doing?

Why?

What do you mean?

Sit there.

Sit there!

Okay, go ahead.

Mr. Kang ordered you

to kill him on the spot.

Wait.

Isn't he Shen Jinzhen's witness?

Mr. Kang can't beat Shen Tunan.

Instead of making a fuss, we'd better kill him.

Mr. Kang said

this was done by the communists.

You'll be rewarded.

Yes.

Was that a gunshot on the sixth floor?

Miss Shen, do you need a car?

There are many people on the platform.

You can't board the train.

There are only three ways to leave.

I'm luckier.

It seems we are destined.

We sure are.

Miss Shen.

Today's weather is bad.

You shouldn't travel.

We'll take you home.

Please.

Thank you.

[Shanghai Garrison Command]

Mr. Kang.

Mr. Kang, we caught Shen Jinzhen.

Good job.

Does her gun match?

No.

She's carrying a FN M1910,

not a Colt M1911.

It's okay.

If it's not with her,

it's at home.

Get a search warrant

to enter Shen Residence legally.

Yes.

One more thing.

Go ahead.

Say it!

Astor House Hotel called to say

Li Shengda ran away with the gold bars.

He even killed several of our men.

He ran away?

Can't you even watch one

person?

What's wrong with you?

Idiots.

Any clues?

Not yet.

What are you waiting for?

Gather everyone to search!

Yes.

Go!

Yes.

Name?

Speak!

I'm asking you!

Mr. Kang.

Jinzhen.

Long time no see.

Mr. Kang.

I didn't expect to see you here.

May I ask

why you arrested me?

Did they hurt you?

No.

Captain Lin doesn’t have the guts.

Then it isn't an arrest.

I invited you here to ask you

to cooperate with the investigation.

What investigation?

Li Shengda's murder.

Isn’t that case closed?

Wei Ruolai has been released too.

Why isn't it over yet?

What you said is pointless.

You saw him

in the hospital this morning.

You mean the person

Captain Lin was going to transfer?

Did he die?

When?

How?

Think about it.

On December 27,

where were you

and what were you doing?

December 27?

Let me think.

I was at the arsenal that night.

Many colleagues can testify to it.

What about last night?

Do you have alibis

in the hospital too?

Yes.

Chief Kang,

what do you mean?

You’re suspected of murdering Li Shengda.

But he was still alive this morning.

Have you lost your memory?

A failed attempt.

Calm down.

Where is the evidence?

The evidence...

Don't be anxious.

No one serves the main dish first.

Li Shengda

named you

as his killer.

It's getting interesting.

I still have the same questions.

Did he die?

When?

How?

If he didn't die,

where is he now?

Does he have valid proof that it's me?

We acquitted Wei Ruolai

because the gun and bullet didn't match.

If you want to convict me,

at least find the weapon first.

Or can you slander the innocent

without any evidence now?

Jinzhen.

Do you think

I won't do anything to you

because your brother backs you up?

Do what?

You mean torture?

Torturing a senior employee of the arsenal

during its busiest period

of Jiangxi's anti-communist campaign?

Chief Kang, I have to ask,

what do you want?

You don't have to label me.

Listen.

Your brother can handle anything else,

but it's useless

if it involves communism.

Got it.

I, Shen Jinzhen, report that

Chief Kang is an underground party member.

Fine.

Evidence?

Sorry.

I don't have

the evidence yet.

But since I dare to testify,

you must investigate it.

Isn't this

what you're doing?

Smile all you want now.

Soon, you'll be bawling your eyes out.

Fine.

Let’s continue

when Li Shengda gets here.

Mrs. Shen.

Excuse me.

I'm just following orders.

Whose orders?

Chief Kang of Garrison Command.

Lin Qiaosong.

Don't go too far.

It's an official investigation.

Don't give us a hard time.

Search!

Bring Yu down.

You said it's a business trip to Suzhou.

But I checked

and they said there's no such thing.

Indeed.

The factory in Suzhou

needs an oil inspection every quarter.

I have to prepare for

the heavy production load in advance.

For a business trip,

do you need a family portrait?

Some parts are faded.

A decent photo studio in Suzhou

is good at retouching.

So I thought I could go and fix it too.

What studio? Address?

Ruyue Photo Studio,

at the West Gate of Soochow University.

It's advertised in Shen Bao Newspaper.

No hesitation.

If you're not guilty,

at the station,

why did you flee?

I'm so forgetful.

When I arrived at the station,

I realized I left behind some documents

and had to go back.

But the station was packed,

so I had to take a shortcut.

Am I right?

Jinzhen.

I used to

like you.

I thought you were smart

and elegant.

It was rare

for a Shanghai socialite.

You flatter me.

Your political circle in Shanghai

is unique too.

What about it?

Don't businessmen ride on officials' coattails?

For you,

it's the other way around.

How unique.

That's an overstatement.

Your brother and I

are both devoted to Kuomintang.

Or we can say he contributed more than me.

All I know is arresting and killing communists.

He helped the nation develop by rectifying the financial system.

I don't want to see

a genius like him

being dragged down by his family.

Are you threatening me?

Not really.

I want to help you

and the Shen family.

Once the news of you being a communist

gets out,

what will happen to your brother?

His career will be doomed.

What will happen to your sister-in-law

and niece?

Last year, Cai was captured in Nanjing

when he was most prosperous.

His son wasn't even eight years old.

He's still digging coal in Huaibei now.

I doubt

you want your niece

to be sold into prostitution.

Don't be nervous.

We are all friends.

I can't be cruel

to you and your brother.

As long as you confess,

I can handle it

under wraps

and it won't affect his career.

But

if we find out the truth,

it's different.

Everyone is watching.

I can only do my job.

Tell me.

When did you join the Communist Party?

In Europe

or just recently?

Captain,

it's not in the backyard.

Captain, it’s not in the study.

Captain, we’ve searched upstairs.

Nothing.

Same here.

No one found the Colt M1911?

No, not even a gun.

Let's go.

Don't go.

Captain Lin.

Since you're here,

why don't you

search thoroughly?

Don't say the Shen family

hindered the investigation

later on.

You're exaggerating.

Not at all.

Mrs. Wang, go get the camera.

Take photos of the home

and send it to the press tomorrow

to show everyone

the military power of the Garrison Command.

We'll send people over to restore everything.

No need.

What did you do to Shen Jinzhen?

She's just assisting in the investigation.

I can't tell you

the details. Goodbye.

Lin Qiaosong.

If you dare lay a finger on Shen Jinzhen...

Whatever.

Mrs. Wang.

Take her upstairs.

Yes, Madam.

Mom, I'm scared.

Don't be afraid.

Go upstairs with Mrs. Wang.

I'll be there soon, okay?

No!

Be good.

Be good.

I'll be right there.

Be good.

Mom, hurry up.

Okay.

Connect me to Mr. Shen at Room 416.

Everyone,

after Chairman Chiang has a rest,

he'll meet you in person.

Tunan.

Later, you go in first.

He wants to see you alone.

Alone?

Yes. You're young and promising,

and Chairman Chiang values you.

You have a promising future.

Ming Da, you've been following Chairman Chiang.

Please guide me in the future.

Sure.

With merits,

you'll soar to new heights.

Thank you.

[Shanghai Garrison Command]

You must be hungry.

What do you want to eat?

I have no appetite.

Mr. Kang.

Let's not waste time.

Bring out

the evidence,

or let me go.

Or torture me to force a confession.

But look at me.

I probably can't handle it.

By the way,

with my status,

if the confession is retracted,

can you really handle it?

This is the Garrison Command,

not the arsenal

or Shen Residence.

Mr. Kang, I'm tired.

It's late.

-Mr. Kang. -I'll get some sleep.

Li Shengda is here. We're on standby.

Heard that?

It's your last chance.

Seize it.

He's finally here.

Invite him in

so I can confront him.

I'll give you ten seconds.

It's your last chance

to turn yourself in.

Thank you, Chief Kang.

But

I still want to confront him.

Ten.

Nine.

Eight.

Seven.

Six.

Five.

Four.

Three.

Two.

Okay, I'll say it.

That's right.

A wise man submits to circumstances.

Don't worry.

If you tell me the truth,

I'll guarantee your family's safety.

I've thought about

your question.

Mixed vegetables rice and pork rib soup.

You asked me what I wanted to eat.

I can't think of anything else.

That's all.

Shen Jinzhen!

By the way,

you just said

you can keep my family safe.

Does Nanjing know this?

If I'm really a communist,

you're in collusion.

As a senior Kuomintang member,

I strongly condemn you!

You're on your own now!

Hello?

Hello, Mrs. Shen.

I'm Ruolai.

Ruolai.

Is everything okay at home?

Jinzhen was arrested

and my house was searched.

I-I haven't been able

to reach Mr. Shen.

I called his room,

but no one answered.

I'm so worried.

Don't worry.

I'll figure it out.

I'll figure it out.

Mom.

Yu.

I'm coming.

Don't cry, my baby.

I'm here. Don't be afraid.

Don't be afraid. Let's go back to the room.

Mom, I'm scared.

Don't be afraid. Let me tell you a story.

Hello.

Is this the Nanjing Police?

I want to report a case.

The suspect is Huang Congyun.

He lives at Central Hotel.

He's planning to assassinate Shen Tunan, the advisor of Central Bank.

Find him now.

We've searched everywhere

but didn’t find the Colt M1911.

Where’s Li Shengda?

We haven't found him.

Useless

idiots.

Morons!

Dimwits!

You watched him, right?

Scram!

Get lost!

What should we do?

Mr. Kang.

We must find Li Shengda first.

We lost the witness

and didn't find the physical evidence.

Shen Tunan will be here soon.

Shen Jinzhen is a communist.

She has to be.

Mr. Kang.

Shen Tunan is at Nanjing to meet Chairman Chiang.

It's different from when we dealt with Wei Ruolai.

Nanjing will think we are

deliberately targeting Shen Tunan

and the Central Bank's new policy.

If we can't follow up with this,

we'll all be doomed!

Mobilize everyone.

We must catch Li Shengda.

Yes.

Hello.

I just got a call.

Today's meeting is cancelled.

Mr. Shen,

you'd better go back to Shanghai.

Ming Da,

can you tell me why?

A Kuomintang proponent

should keep their reputation

clean.

Sir.

Something happened at home.

What happened?

Wei Ruolai made a false police report

to get to you.

Why?

Miss Shen

was arrested by the Investigation and Arrest Unit.

For ties with communism.

Lin Qiaosong brought men to your house

to search for evidence.

Pack up.

We'll leave for Shanghai now.

Yes.

Gosh.

Those bastards.

This mat is all messed up.

Seriously.

Evildoers

will get their retribution.

Tell us what happened last night.

The more detailed, the better.

I was on duty yesterday.

Two of Lin Qiaosong's men

came to get gold bars.

Ten gold bars.

I kept my eye on them

and eavesdropped.

They said Li Shengda was alive

and staying at Astor House Hotel.

So I went there.

I heard the gunshot at the hotel lobby.

Li Shengda

was covered with blood and ran out with a case.

I wanted to follow him,

but then I recalled you telling me

to inform you

when something big happens.

So I called your house

to contact you.

You know everything after that.

Do you think Jinzhen's arrest

is related to Li Shengda?

No.

Impossible.

How could Miss Shen be involved with communists?

But without evidence,

Mr. Kang and Lin Qiaosong wouldn't dare do this.

They arrested her and searched the house.

Something must be suspicious with Jinzhen.

Sir,

there weren't any evidence

when I was arrested too.

They arrest people as they wish.

They chose to arrest her when you were in Nanjing.

They must be targeting you.

So we shouldn't step forward now.

We can contact the arsenal

and put pressure on them.

Release her!

Release her!

[The Nation Belongs to All Citizens]

Release her!

Release her!

Release Shen Jinzhen!

Release Shen Jinzhen!

[Release Shen Jinzhen]

Get Chief Kang out here!

Shen Jinzhen is the core engineer

of our arsenal!

You can't arrest her for no reason!

Objection!

Release Shen Jinzhen!

Release Shen Jinzhen!

Release her!

Objection!

Release her!

Mr. Weng.

Mr. Weng, thank you.

Don't mention it.

Jinzhen is our core engineer.

Bullying her is bullying our arsenal.

If you need any help,

we'll go all out for you.

Let everyone

have a rest.

Wait for my news.

Okay.

All right!

I have an appointment with Chief Kang.

I'm Shen Tunan.

Okay, hang on.

I'll make a call.

Chief Kang.

Central Bank's Shen Tunan.

Yes!

Please.

Not you guys.

Wait for me outside.

Yes.

Don't worry.

Miss Shen will be fine.

How do you know?

If Miss Shen is really a communist,

Mr. Shen would know.

You're right.

Mr. Shen is sharp.

He'd have noticed it.

And Miss Shen's of a high status.

Without solid evidence,

they wouldn't use force.

A forced testimony

won't count anyway.

I hope so.

Tunan.

So sorry.

I should've waited for you to come back.

But Li Shengda suddenly confessed about his suspicions

of Jinzhen colluding with the communists.

We dare not neglect it.

Have you interrogated her?

Not really.

I invited her over for a brief chat

and let her go right after.

It's the same as last time.

A lack of evidence.

We have evidence.

But Tunan,

are you sure you want to ask about this?

If I don't ask, will you let me go?

Fine.

I'll be frank then.

Do you remember

Li Shengda, the one who Wei Ruolai

tried to kill?

He's not dead yet.

He identified his killer

as Jinzhen.

Twice.

Mr. Kang,

are you sure it's my sister Shen Jinzhen?

You know her.

She's a pampered kid.

She can only play the piano with her hands.

Also, she has always been by my side.

I swear

she'd have no chance to join the Communist Party.

Li Shengda is in my hands.

He can testify anytime.

In order to thwart Jiangxi's plan

to suppress communism,

a communist traitor

is slandering the backbone of the arsenal.

If this delays the ammunition production,

Mr. Kang,

you'll...

be an accomplice.
