you cannot accomplish, Charlie Kane.

What is wrong with me?

- Nothing is wrong with you.

You were just trying to figure it all out

like the rest of us.

(heavy sighing)

- Do you know that canaries are named after the island

in which they originated, Canary Islands,

and that they're of the finch family.

Most birds native to North America are of the crow family,

but canaries they were brought here by

Spanish sailors in the 1600s

and don't exist here in the wild.

- I had no idea you knew so much about birds.

- Most people don't.

- Oh, shit.

- What?

- No, I'm sorry it's okay if we kiss.

We have to go to the Get Happying.

- No, no, no those people are like

one gentle nudge away from suicide.

If I go there and open my mouth and say how I really--

- You are more help to them now than you ever were before.

Plus, Bobby's going and not in a good way.

- (sighing) I told you I didn't wanna come to these anymore.

- I know, I'm so glad you decided to come.

- I didn't decide to come.

You asked me to lunch and then brought me here.

- Okay, look I know you said you wanted a break

from Bobby and Charlie and all this.

Okay, but this Happying it's exactly what you need

now that you're free of Bobby, okay.

And plus look at these single guys here, yeah.

Yeah.

You made the right choice Sarah.

- Well, Mr. Kane is running a bit late.

But I'm happy to report that the hearing

this morning went wonderfully.

Hopefully Charlie will be here soon.

Oh, right now.

(crowd applauding)

(crowd cheering)

- Just speak from your heart.

- I'm not sure that's a good idea.

(gentle music)

Um. (throat clearing).

When I was eight,

my mother was diagnosed with advanced lymphoma.

She died four months later,

and early this year my girlfriend Holly

was struck and killed by an SUV.

The reason I'm telling you this is not because

I enjoy talking about it or remembering it.

But it's because it's reality.

Holly once told me

that to be happy

you need to focus on the positive.

That's true.

But focusing on the positive

doesn't mean forgetting the negative.

That's my mistake.

In order to be happy, to be happy,

we need to embrace the worst in life.

We cannot separate the good from the bad.

They're unescapably inextricably linked.

The loss of Holly and my mom

wouldn't have hurt so bad

if it hadn't been so damn good.

We have to face our greatest fears

even though we know they may come true.

Now my greatest fear is that I'll never be happy.

If I get even a glimpse of happiness,

that it'll be taken away

leaving me with a reality even bleaker than before.

The fact of the matter is,

there is not a happy ending for everyone.

Read any newspaper they're filled with tragic endings.

The only way to find happiness

in this cruel fucking world

is to accept it for what it is,

accept ourselves for who we are,

and just do our best.

(heavy sighing)

This was a bad idea.

- [Martha] I'm afraid I might never see my son again.

- [Man] I'm afraid no one wants to hear me laugh.

- [Man] I'm afraid that Ghostbusters three,

Ghostbustin', is no good,

and that I'm wasting my life on a pipe dream.

- I'm afraid I made the right choice.

- Listen, listen.

Everyone, everyone, listen.

I have something important to say.

Charlie Kane is a fraud.

- Huh, Bobby, you don't have to.

- No, no, no, I cannot sit here anymore idly

and listen to you assault these people

with your pleasantries and platitudes.

- I know, Bobby, seriously just--

- No, no, you don't know, okay.

Let me just say this.

Everyone, Charlie's life sucks.

Sorry, Buddy, but it's true.

When he was eight years old-- - Look, Bobby, look.

Would you shut the fuck up?

We've gone through this already, okay.

(soft gasping)

(gentle thudding) Ow!

What the hell is wrong with you!

- Come here he's back.

Welcome back, Buddy.

- [Charlie] Who hits me in the shin?

Get off me. - Bobby.

- Yeah. - Everyone was just

going around and saying what their worst fear was.

You can go next.

(heavy sighing) Come on just speak from--

- Oh, yeah, I got it speak from the heart I got it.

I guess, I fear that I'm kind of an asshole.

- Yeah.

- Because of that,

I pushed away the most beautiful

and sweet and caring woman that I'll ever meet.

My biggest fear is that she won't come back.

(gentle music)

Now my second greatest fear is that ventriloquist

dummies will want-- - All right.

You can stop talking now.

(crowd applauding)

- Great, everyone's happy now.

- You know I still owe you dinner.

- And I still owe you a kiss.
