(25 years ago, Kalisha People's Hospital)

What's the problem?

Gunshot wound.

Be careful not to get infected.

How much do you make in a month?

Around 300.

In dollars?

Thanks.

Open it.

Dr. Mu.

We get along well.

If you'd like to join us,

take them all.

=Chase the Truth=

(Adapted from Zhao Junkai's novel "Northwest Off-North is Not North")

=Episode 19=

Relax.

Staying emotionally stable

is crucial for your heart's health.

Xiaowan cares about you.

I won't harm you.

Where is Gu Mulan exactly?

Captain Duan.

Surveillance caught Sha Xiaofei's car heading north

through Dali Village in the north suburbs.

He's likely in the deserted area by now.

If he's gone into Heisha Sea,

without surveillance,

finding him will be impossible.

The odds of capturing him are unlikely.

What exactly are you up to?

Cheng.

If we are to become family,

we must first be honest with each other.

If you intend to marry Xiaowan,

I need you

to know my real identity

and also my relationship with Gu Mulan.

Come in.

Please.

Mr. Mu.

Can we talk now?

Let's start with a checkup.

I'm here for Gu Mulan.

As for the treatment,

we can do it later.

Today,

we're putting family matters before business.

Good health

is the only thing I asked

for my future son-in-law.

If there are any moral flaws,

one has plenty of time to rectify them.

But if health becomes an issue,

it's irreversible sometimes.

So if you want to be my son-in-law,

your heart must be in good condition.

Come.

I'll give you a checkup.

How's your recovery been?

What's wrong?

Are you afraid I'll hurt you?

Xiaowan is going to hate me if I hurt you.

I wouldn't want to break her heart again.

Have you done much wrong in your life?

Does stealing a corn

when passing by a field of crops during a school outing count?

Maybe I'm trying to justify myself.

Don't move.

Let me finish speaking.

With just one touch,

you'll be lifeless.

We're going to be a family.

Don't make me do it.

What you're doing is a crime.

I'm already a criminal

by your standards.

Are you associated with Gu Mulan?

Of course not.

I'm a doctor devoted to saving lives.

It's just that in my youth,

I got mixed up with the Northwest Wolves,

and I gained wealth

beyond ordinary people's reach.

What did that get me?

A shattered family

and a life without stability.

I'm in great pain.

You wouldn't understand.

There's no problem

that can't be solved.

As long as you're willing to cooperate with us,

I'll protect you.

I'll do my best

to give you a fair treatment.

For your own sake

and for Xiaowan's,

you mustn't continue this.

Let me test you.

How many core members are there

in Northwest Wolves?

Seven.

Seven?

The leader, Gu Mulan.

The second, Jiang Jiuping.

The third, Sha Fei.

The fourth, Pei Yin.

The fifth, Lu Tai.

The seventh, Lin Nan.

And who is the sixth?

You are.

Stop.

Where are you going?

We're out of fuel.

Captain Xia.

Something is off.

Let's go.

Mr. Mu.

Mr. Mu.

Gu Mulan...

Where's Gu Mulan?

Where is he?

(Ambulance, Xiaowan)

Master!

Officer Cheng!

Mr. Mu?

Mr. Mu.

Officer Cheng.

Officer Cheng.

What happened?

Captain Xia.

What is it?

Mu Shaobai is dead.

Officer Cheng becomes a suspect.

Which Officer Cheng?

Cheng Fan.

Officer Cheng.

(We'll bring him in.)

(What's your opinion?)

Bring him in then.

I won't interfere.

Captain Xia.

I have the recording on me.

There should be a blunt injury on his chest.

I caused it.

But it's definitely not a fatal wound.

Mu Shaobai and I were alone at the scene.

That made me a suspect.

Cuff me.

Hello?

(Hanbei People's Hospital)

Hello, 400 yuan in total.

(PetroChina)

(Call the police)

Who is this?

(Is this Captain Xia?)

This is Jiang Jiuping.

I heard you were looking for me.

Where are you?

I'm already on Lanchuan Freeway.

I'll be home tonight.

(I'd like to talk to you.)

(Could we meet tonight?)

Sure.

(Hanbei Public Security Bureau)

Chief Wang.

The officer I sent out

landed at the airport this early morning,

and by noon, he became a suspect,

whereas the investigator I sent out

is still missing.

This is the darkest moment

in my 36 years in the force.

You're right.

This case of Northwest Wolves

not only involves the dignity of the Hanbei Public Security Bureau

but also impacts the safety

of 94 million people in three provinces.

Yes.

I've coordinated the tasks at the bureau with Deputy Chief Wu.

Yes, you can rest assured about that.

Chief Wang.

If I don't settle this matter

at Kalisha this time,

I'll resign and apologize.

No, I'm not being impulsive.

This is my promise.

Heisha Sea.

The place where the dream began.

We're home.

♪I want to journey from the south to the north♪

♪I want to traverse from white to black♪

♪I want people to see me♪

♪Yet not know who I am♪

Dr. Mu.

Chief Tai.

Are you going to Kalisha?

Actually, I...

Let me come with you.

I already know everything.

I've been prepared for the truth

since the day

I decided to be with Cheng Fan.

If there's any difficulty,

we can face and solve it together.

I just hope

to provide a fair judgment

for my dad and Cheng Fan.

Officer.

How many of them are there?

Four or five people.

Show us the surveillance footage.

This way.

I warn you.

Don't make me take action.

Speak up now

if you know anything.

If I know anything,

I'll definitely tell you now.

But I really don't know

what you're talking about.

Yiyi.

Give us some space.

You forced me to do this.

I'm begging you.

Just tell me.

What is really

in the shrine?

Firearms!

Our family's firearms. You understand?

Tell me where it is!

Give it back to me!

Return our family's belongings to me!

The shrine... The shrine...

The shrine... The shrine

was built by Jiang Jiuping.

I... I really

don't know anything.

You've got the wrong person.

Really.

All Northwest Wolves are the same.

They like to keep the goods hidden

from their own biological children.

I'm not his biological daughter.

Enough.

You don't have to lie to me at this point.

I'm not lying.

I'm not his biological daughter.

My dad

is Gu Mulan,

the criminal mastermind you all talk about,

Northwest Wolf King.

(Kalisha Public Security Bureau)

Chief Deng.

Chief Tai, here.

Chief Tai.

I won't join.

The case falls under your jurisdiction.

I don't want to overstep,

and you don't need to avoid it.

Rest assured, Chief.

I am calm

and rational now.

Encounters with such base framing have happened to me

more than once before.

I'm not afraid of being unable

to clarify this matter now.

I'm just worried about how I'll explain this to Xiaowan,

especially since her father died in my arms.

How am I supposed to tell her

what type of person her father was?

I don't know if she would marry me now.

But in my heart,

she's already my wife.

I've held a gun for half my life

but can't protect my woman.

I really don't understand

why God would impose such pain

on Xiaowan.

She is such a pure

and beautiful person.

Back to the case.

You killed him?

No, he committed suicide.

Officer Cheng.

If he committed suicide,

why is there bruising on his chest?

I kicked him.

It was self-defense.

Wait for the autopsy report,

and the truth will be revealed.

What was his motive?

I think

it's the guilt

toward his wife and daughter over the years.

It's also to protect his daughter

and to make me stop investigating.

(Where exactly is Gu Mulan?)

(In 1994,)

(Gu Mulan got shot.)

I saved him.

That was the first time I operated on him.

Since then,

any of his men in need of surgery

would come to me.

If I refused,

they would report me to the hospital.

If I did it,

it was 10,000 US dollars per person paid on the spot.

Since then,

I have become Gu Mulan's cover.

That's why the Kalisha police

can't find any records

of Gu Mulan and his gang

receiving treatment at the hospital.

(In 2002,)

(I became the chief surgeon.)

(At that time, I had already earned around)

(2.83 million US dollars from Gu Mulan.)

(He invited me to his house.)

(I dared not refuse.)

(He offered me 5 million US dollars to join him.)

(And you agreed?)

(I'm a doctor.)

(Why do I need so much money?)

(Of course, I'll admit,)

cars and houses

gave me momentary satisfaction.

But can that save lives?

Can it make people respect me more?

I rejected him.

That was the bravest and most correct decision of my life.

But he didn't let you off.

And my family.

In 2003,

my assistant, Wei Yong,

discovered I had contact with Gu Mulan.

Two weeks later,

he was run over.

The Black Cloak did it.

Wei Yong wasn't just my assistant.

He was also my wife's younger brother

and Xiaowan's uncle.

My wife was going to the police to report me.

I begged her.

I said, "For the sake of our child",

"you can't report me".

As a result, she left me.

Xiaowan never knew the reason behind it

and has always believed that I drove her mother away.

She hasn't forgiven me for it until now.

You treated Gu Mulan's gunshot wound.

That's illegal.

This became a major stain

on your career, right?

Gu Mulan seized on that

and continued to control you.

After he left, Zhou Ji came.

And I had to endure it.

Cheng.

I've saved thousands of lives.

I'm a competent doctor.

But can everything I've done

make up for the mistakes I made when I was young?

How did you get to know Jiang Jiuping?

At first, he came to see me for medical treatment.

We had a normal doctor-patient relationship.

Later, we became partners.

Are you investigating him?

Is he part of Northwest Wolves?

He shouldn't be.

If he was,

he wouldn't be bullied by Zhou Ji.

Mr. Jiang is a good person.

Without him, the Murray Hospital wouldn't exist.

I am very grateful to him.

Mu Xiaowan

has always told me

that her dad

is a very, very good doctor.

Really?

I didn't give her a complete family

and enough fatherly love,

nor did I earn her respect.

I regret it a lot

and feel very guilty.

Right now, I'm willing to do everything for her

including killing people.

Do you know what you're doing?

If I don't do this,

Xiaowan will die.

I promised Ku

to bring you down with me.

(Otherwise,)

(he will order the Black Cloak)

(to hunt down Xiaowan and Ye.)

What are you saying?

Now, only Ku and I

know the whereabouts of Gu Mulan.

So I must die.

Where exactly is Gu Mulan?!

If I tell you,

Xiaowan's life will be over.

We're here.

I will protect Xiaowan.

What are you afraid of?

I've experienced the Black Cloak.

I can't afford to see them again.

You know better than I do

how crazy the Black Cloak is.

You can protect Xiaowan now.

But can you protect her for life?

I beg you.

Don't use Xiaowan's life

to hunt down Gu Mulan.

I'm begging you, Cheng.

What's wrong?

Mr. Mu.

Mr. Mu!

Mr. Mu!

Mr. Mu!

What's wrong with you?

All my life,

I've been controlled by Gu Mulan.

I didn't want the money.

I was afraid he'd ruin my reputation.

The secret I've kept my whole life,

I've told you today.

Mr. Mu.

Mr. Mu!

What did you eat?

Tell me quickly, so I can save you!

Hello, 120?

This is 4, Nanshan Road.

Someone ate poison.

(For Xiaowan.)

(Stop investigating.)

That was how the injuries on his body came about.

I think he must have taken a lethal dose of drugs before.

The kick I gave wasn't fatal.

At most, it might cause a fracture.

Officer Cheng.

You were the only person

at the scene.

So you must provide evidence besides this recording

to prove that the lethal drugs have nothing to do with you.

You can continue the investigation. I'll wait for the results.

Mu Shaobai's final words to you

were a plea of not to investigate further.

You want to give up?

Why should I give up?

They are insulting my profession

and threatening my family.

Even if I take off this uniform,

I'll fight them till the end.

Cheng Fan.

I'm fine.

Where's Jiang Jiuping?

He went out of town

and is on the way back.

He should arrive tonight if nothing goes wrong.

I want to talk to him.

Please tell him

that his partner is dead

and that I am the suspect.

I want to talk to him.

I taught you.

If you're innocent,

I'll do my best

to restore justice for you.

Chief Tai.

How about we stop here for today?

Dr. Mu is here.

You want to see her?

Captain Duan.

Jiang Jiuping's phone is back on.

He just called to report that he's safe.

The signal shows he's on the Lanchuan Freeway.

He should be on his way back.

We've implemented the highest level of monitoring

on all responsible persons at the hotel.

As long as the case is not closed,

none of them can leave Kalisha.

Thanks, Captain Xia.

Li.

How is it?

Captain Xia, debugging's done.

Tracing completed.

Good, keep going.

Captain Xia, Captain Duan. We have an update.

What is it?

Captain Xia.

At 1:23 p.m.,

a clue was found at Tianshan Road and Kunlun Road.

The license plate number is He CFA365.

He might be holding a girl.

Currently, he's heading north.

We're still tracking him.

I'm sorry, Xiaowan.

It wasn't you.

Right?

Hello, who's this?

(Dad.)

(It's me.)

Wenli.

Where are you now?

(She's with me.)

(Who are you?)

(I'm Gun.)

Sha Fei, the gun trafficker, died a long time ago.

Are you his son?

(Tell me.)

(Name your price.)

I want everything you have,

including the Blue Sky Hotel.

(Okay.)

(I can offer you my money and the hotel.)

(Give me the address.)

Any cops nearby?

(I did call the police,)

(but I didn't know)

(that Wenli is in your hands.)

About the police,

I promise I can cover for you

if you ensure her safe return.

I won't let them trace you.

Inform the police

to not bother locating me.

There's not a soul in sight

within my one-kilometer radius.

If anyone dares to approach,

I'll kill her.

(Please don't.)

(I'll agree to whatever you want.)

Sir.

This hotel of mine

isn't something that can be moved or taken away.

Even if I hand it over now,

you won't be able to run it.

(Jiang.)

(You know what I want)

(better than anyone.)

I'll give the police a call.

I'll have them come

and search under your deity statue

(to see how many guns are inside.)

(I do have an antique gun from the late Qing Dynasty.)

If you want it,

I can give it to you now.

(My shrine)

(has only a single deity statue,)

(nothing else valuable.)

(If you fancy the deity statue,)

(I can give that to you as well.)

Don't hurt her!

I really don't know what you want.

(I'll give you a location.)

Once you're there,

head north for a kilometer

with two million in cash.

Come alone.

Is a raid possible?

Shao Xiaofei's location

is surrounded by two kilometers of desolate desert.

He'll notice

once someone enters.

He swaps cards with each call, making tracking less effective.

Plus,

he might realize

we're listening in

and ready to flee early.

Moreover,

he tends to act irrationally.

If we rush in,

the victim will be in danger.

Chief Tai, Captain Duan.

Jiang Jiuping just called me.

He said he'll be here

in an hour.

Be prepared.

Got it.

Good son.

You don't even care about your mother.

Well,

I'm here.

Where's my uncle?

Ku, give him the thing

to exchange for my uncle.

No rush, Nana.

Yin.

It's windy outside.

Let's talk inside.

Things have changed.

The ones who should be dead

are dead.

Officer Chu.

This was where your mother sat.

Linna.

Dare to sit?

Is it that difficult?
