[Matty] I've been coming up to these woods
since I was nine years old.

Up until now, it's just been hunting,
fishing trips, you know, in and out.

Now, living here, a whole different thing.

I'm really looking forward
to transferring it from a hunting cabin

to my full-time home.

This used to hold up a boat.

And the next big thing now is to go out
and clear all this land off,

to do the addition that we're going
to build on the cabin.

My buddy Don's coming over
with his little machine.

Great guy to know in these parts.

Got the little excavator
and knows how to use it.

he's like, you know, having a professor.

We're racing against winter at this point.

Once the ground freezes up,
it's going to be way harder

to do all this excavating,
so we need to get done.

Newfoundland is infamous
for really rough ground.

There's rock, there's roots,
there's holes.

Without his excavator, this would
take days and so, so much work.

Out here, in the woods, my time is my own.

And that's why I'm living
this different type of lifestyle.

As far as squirrels go, I mean,
squirrels are just so tasty.

It's comparable to going to the ice cream
shop on a weekend in the city

and getting ice cream cones.

It's a nice treat.

It's not enough to survive on,

but it's kind of like a reward
for being here.

[Margot] This place burned down in 2017.

It was a natural forest fire.

The trappers, they didn't come back
since the fire happened.

So, I'm here to start making
the trapping possible again.

There's a good highway here
for snowshoe hares.

I can see there was a couple runs
back and forth.

So, I think I'm going to set
a couple of snares here.

That's a good sign.

I was very relieved when I saw
all those tracks,

because with that fire around,
I was not sure that life was back.

It's a good indicator that I'm going
to have actually a decent trapping season.

I make a little loop just big enough
for the hare to jump through.

Then, I put a couple of branches around
to make sure they go through my snare.

Make sure they don't go around.

And hopefully I catch something.

Trapping, today, is one of the last ways
to live full-time remote in the bush.

And it's not about killing
and actually make money out of it,

that's not why I'm doing that.

It's more for the lifestyle.

Without trapping,
I wouldn't be able to live here.

I'm not the first person
that try to make a life here.

It's been a few people before me that try.

But I mean, it's a wild place
and it's not so easy.

All around here there is reminders

of how hard it is
to establish a life here.

Wow, there's trees growing up
on the roof, that's pretty cool.

It's a very strange atmosphere here.

It's half creepy, half super cool.

These cabins are 40 years old.

The trapper was named Plunkett.

He was here with his family
in the 70-80s,

but they just took off one day
and never came back.

It was like stepping back 40 years back.

That's the trappers name: Plunkett.

I'm sure I can find some stuff I can use.

I mean, it's pretty old,
but maybe I can use some of it.

It's to harvest berries.

They made their own with nails,
that's pretty cool.

I'm keeping that one.

My great-grandfather had a cabin here,

and myself, I built a log cabin
when I was 25.

When I finished to build the log cabin,

it was at least a foot high
above the ground,

and now, it's almost touching the ground.

The corner just slipped out on the rock,
and I don't want it to get to the ground.

This will need to be lift up
on both sides,

The real key with trying to spot
the right log from the trail...

If you look at the tops,
you can easily tell

if, you know, it's high enough,
tall enough.

And right here, these ones look promising.

These little contraptions
are what they call Alaska Mill.

It's basically a very, very simple setup
you can take anywhere, very lightweight.

And you can make rough lumber
basically out in the bush anywhere.

[chainsaw buzzing]

A very, very useful tool out in the bush,

where there's no lumber store.

[chainsaw powering down]

Oh, I was afraid of that.

I hit a screw with the chainsaw,
which is not good.

That's the worst thing you could do.

Oh, I'm sorry, girl, so sorry.

As soon as you hit any metal
with a chainsaw,

especially a milling chain,
boom, it's instantly dull.

Trying to cut wood
with a dull chain is like,

it's like having a flat tire in your car.

It'll still go down the road,
but not very well.

It's smoking, it's working so hard.

I got to stop and either
put some love in that chain,

really sharpen the hell out of it,
or go put a new chain on.

Fresh file job on the chain.

A chainsaw is a woodsman's paintbrush.

You're taking a raw material, purely raw,
just a tree in the woods,

and you take that and, you know,
you turn it into something else.

That's good hard wood.

Of all the activities
out here in the bush,

milling lumber is probably my favourite.

Yeah, there's a lot of satisfaction
when you come home with a beam

or home with a piece of lumber.

[Margot] I want to be in the woods.

I think the bush is the only place for me,
where I can feel the most myself.

Never built cabin on my own.

I worked on a couple of cabins before,

but it's the first time
actually doing it on my own.

Pretty solid.

Now that I have my square all lined up,
I got to start cutting notches.

That's what I saw on Plunkett's cabin.

Do a little notch in that log,

and then flatten that log,

so they're going to sit
perfectly together.

I don't want to just do half-assed job
just to have it done,

I really want to be proud
of what I'm building.

My angle was a little shitty
on the first one,

and I cut a little too, too deep.

There's no instruction manual.

You just have to figure it out
on your own and make it work.

I need to make mistakes at first,

This one is way more solid
than the first one,

so I'm way more happy
about that one.

I think it's going to be good.

they just do it and they do it so badass.

just to be stronger and tougher.

and so far, I've only worked with men.

it actually pushes me more,

All the reward of doing everything

And the one place that
I really felt like myself

and just relax.

And I feel like I'm back to that place,
like this is just who I am.

This is where I belong.

to pass down to them.

This is as real as it gets.

We have the option...

...of having something with nutrients.

[Emilie] I prefer this food
over store-bought food.

We know that it was eating
off the land, and it's fresh.

So, we know the whole process
of the animal that we eat.

I think food is medicine.

[Emilie] For so long, Indigenous people,
they haven't been respected

or maybe they haven't been understood.

And I think showing this
and everything that Gilbert does,

I really want, want it to show people
how amazing it is.

I feel good about this place.

I'm really happy that we're
building a home here.

It's going to keep our bellies full,
we're going to warm

with the wood that we cut down

and we have a shelter,
that's all we can ask for.
