Highlands and Islands division

is Britain's biggest beat.

The geographical scope of where
we police is phenomenal.

12,000 square miles of
glens, islands,

deep lochs and towering mountains.

We do have some of the most
dangerous terrain.

Where the hell is he?
Where is he?

Even if you were
a very good swimmer,

you're not coming out of there.

Patrolling this vast, wild
landscape...

There are some vehicles out there,

but I don't think
they're going to be...

..and answering emergency calls
in the wilderness...

..the Highland cops go above
and beyond to combat crime...

Clearly quite a bit of blood.

Suspicious death, same as you
would get anywhere else.

..and keep people safe.

that it's been killed.

..in some of the most beautiful
and challenging places in Britain.

At the heart of the Highlands,
the land rises towards

one of Britain's highest
mountain ranges -

the vast Cairngorms National Park,

a place that brings its own
challenges for the police.

The mountains of Scotland
and the Highlands

are unforgiving places.

They are absolutely beautiful,
jaw-droppingly at times.

But the weather can turn
in a heartbeat.

Winds can easily reach well
in excess of 100 miles an hour.

That poses great risks.

I'm a member of the mountain rescue
team that's based in Inverness,

and we're ready at a moment's notice

to be deployed anywhere
across the Highlands,

where there's a need
to try and find people

who are either injured or lost,

or to provide a sort of
policing response

in an area that can't be accessed
by ordinary beat cops.

Today, Cailean's team have received
a call about someone

who has gone missing
in the Cairngorms.

LINE RINGS

This young missing person
with special needs is vulnerable.

He was last seen 18 hours ago.

So this morning, Cal's team are
launching a major search operation.

This is us almost arriving
at the outdoor centre

where the young man's missing from.

Last mile or two,
I've been keeping my eye out.

Is he actually walking through here,
or has he popped up anywhere?

The forest, some of it's quite
dense, but it's leading right out

onto the hill that I can see
out in front of me.

There is a bit of rain,
but the search conditions are good.

Now the real hard work starts.

Boots on, and get out
and actually start

the big game of hide and seek,
finding the missing person.

Joining Cal is PC Katie Johnstone.

There's been quite a concern,
given the extra needs that he has

and the fact that he's
gone away overnight.

So there was no indication that
he'd made any preparations for this,

which makes the concern even more.
And given the weather,

probably looking about
five degrees last night,

and that's without the wind
and the rain,

so it's a big concern to have him
found and as soon as possible.

When somebody has vulnerabilities
and they're missing,

it sort of ratchets
the whole thing up.

If they've got learning difficulties

or if they're not aware
of their surroundings,

it's an additional risk.

Time is of the essence to find them
and keep them safe.

With every passing hour,

the risk that the man is injured
or hypothermic increases.

But the search area is huge -

a national park of almost
2,000 square miles.

So if the police are
to find him quickly,

they will need all the help
they can get.

We've got a large number
of Cairngorm Mountain Rescue Team.

We've got a police dog handler
out as well.

So it's the beginnings of
a very large-scale search.

Air support hasn't been
confirmed yet,

but we've got a vast area
from as far as the eye can see,

three or four miles up
into the Cairngorms,

running through the forest,
the hills

and then stretching
all the way down to Aviemore.

It's a needle in a haystack,
but that's what we're here to do.

Is it Ian, by the way? Yeah, yeah.

The police mountain rescue team
works closely

with the volunteer teams.

They are the experts.

Where do you want us?
Throw us in.

Just put us wherever you want.

That local knowledge
and tapping into it is crucial

for police inquiries and for
missing person searches.

The first place to look are the woods
near where the man was staying.

We are covering a massive area,

and if somebody's got
a head start on us,

that area has just not become big,
it's become absolutely mammoth.

Sparsely populated regions
like the Cairngorms

make up much of N Division's beat,

but at its heart is a busy city -
Inverness.

On duty today are traffic cops
Elaine Madison and Donnie Stephenson.

An urgent call has just come in.

Yeah, that's all received. I'll keep
you updated with how we get on.

There's been somebody
struck by a vehicle.

They believe it was deliberately.

But the vehicle has since made off.

When a call comes in
and there's been a suggestion

a vehicle has been used
to deliberately drive at someone...

Turn around here.

..first thing you're thinking
is to try and identify

the vehicle involved
in the collision.

What happened exactly?

Did you get a look at the driver
or anything like that?

No?

Any idea who's done it, or...?

OK. No, that's fine. Thank you.

The cyclist has only minor injuries
and doesn't need hospital treatment,

so Donny and Elaine can start
looking for evidence

that can identify the culprit.

That camera facing down there
looks like a good shout.

Yeah. That one there.

I'm going to see if we can get
something off that.

The camera is a private one
on a house overlooking the scene.

It may have captured
the moment of the crash.

At the scene of
a road traffic collision,

we will always look for dashcam
or CCTV opportunities.

Having CCTV footage is
best evidence.

Witnesses may have seen
something on the road,

sometimes folks' memories
are confused.

However, CCTV, dashcam doesn't lie.

The camera was recording
at the time of the collision.

The owner of the house agrees to let
Donnie and Elaine view the footage.

The van's followed him
up that street.

Mm-hm.

Ouch.

Male driver anyway.

The footage is clear...

..and it seems to back up
the cyclist's claim

that the driver hit him on purpose.

Using a vehicle as a weapon

doesn't often happen in
the Highlands and Islands.

That is very violent behaviour.

Especially in these circumstances

where someone's been struck
deliberately, you start thinking,

is this person going to do it again
to someone else?

It's very important for us

that we identify the offenders
involved and apprehend them.

Based on the CCTV footage,

this is now a case of
attempted murder.

Whoever did it is still at large.

They urgently need to be caught
before anyone else is hurt.

Across the city at police HQ,

detectives from CID are now
taking charge of the investigation,

led by DS Chris MacLeod.

We heard the call that somebody
has been knocked off their bike,

which is not an uncommon call
because road traffic collisions

can happen and sometimes
accidents can happen.

But then once we've reviewed
the CCTV footage,

the manner of driving
is so shocking

and then the actual assault
on the victim...

..could have been catastrophic.

CID are responsible for dealing
with serious crimes,

anything from murder,
all the way down to

dealing with serious assaults.

But because of that, I guess you see
the darker side of Inverness.

When we're looking at this,
we're looking at their intent,

so whether or not they've just
assaulted him with the vehicle.

Are they trying to
give him a fright,

or are they actually trying to cause
significant and genuine harm to him?

And they followed him
across a junction,

causing other vehicles
to stop abruptly in the road.

So there's a white Mini that we see.

It has to emergency stop
as they cross in front of it.

They basically chase the victim down
and then wipe them out.

The act is very clear and deliberate
from the CCTV footage,

and it presented a real risk
of serious and significant harm

to the victim, possibly of his life.

With the video showing intent
to injure or kill,

the police now have an urgent
manhunt on their hands.

With the help of witness statements,

a local man, Ross Grant,
and a young woman

have been identified as suspects.

Both are known to the police,
but they haven't been located,

and it's starting to look like
they're on a crime spree.

During today's investigation,

information was brought
to our attention that

the suspects have also got
themselves involved in

an altercation on Grant Street

and there was potentially
a knife involved.

My officers are currently
taking witness statements

and trying to identify further
witnesses who can speak to that,

to give us enough evidence
for a criminal conviction

for carrying offensive weapons
as well.

That's not all.

The same pair are also suspected
of stealing the van

used in the collision and stealing
and torching another vehicle.

It's now a race against time
to put them behind bars

before they strike again.

In the Cairngorms,

PCs Cal MacLeod and Katie Johnstone
are continuing to search

for a vulnerable young man
who is missing.

He would normally only
venture outside with a carer,

but he has now not been seen
for almost 24 hours.

Ready.

I search for a living.

I look for things.

That is my job.

So when I search,
I want to find something.

Be it the bag of drugs,
be it the missing child,

be it the knife that's been
used in a crime.

So whilst in
the mountain rescue team,

I'm not out there
in a sort of criminal aspect,

I'm bringing that same
mindset and diligence

to make sure that I find
whatever it is I'm looking for.

An initial sweep has come up blank...

OK. Are we good?

..so the team regroups
and extends the search

to an area behind the holiday house.

When I'm searching through heavy
areas of shrubbery, gorse,

forested, wet, marshy areas,

it's not pleasant,

but you have to
stick your head in and look.

It's dirty, uncomfortable work,

but it needs to be done right
in order to find somebody.

And as the team combs
the thick vegetation,

they spot something.

That's a find.

Find! Find!

Yeah, we've got a bit of movement.

To find somebody
who was still breathing

and had a pulse is fantastic.

Aye, we'll just scoop him under.

But the young man is really needing
medical attention

in order to prevent them from dying.

Probably kind of a minute into it,

he has then started to
come round very slowly again,

starting with the eyes
and a bit of movement then,

and then he started speaking to us.

INDISTINCT REPLY

If we get him in the vehicle,
we could probably get into

the reception area bit and get him
in the building right there.

That's probably the best bit,
warmest bit. See how we go. Yeah.

Everyone ready? Yep.

The man is now responding,

but after being out all night,
he is hypothermic.

He needs immediate medical attention.

That's his shoes, yeah.

He'll be needing them.

So he needs some proper
medical care.

One of the doctors is in
the Cairngorm mountain team,

so he's looking after him
at the minute,

and then an ambulance
will take him to Raigmore Hospital.

But it's a top little find,
just in a very tucked-away spot.

It's taken a while for him to
kind of provide some lucid answers,

having been unconscious
for a while,

but he has slowly come through
more and more

and told us when he went
missing last night,

and even now, he's sitting up
and having something to drink.

So it's a really positive result
for him and his family

and obviously us as well.

It's why we do this job,
is to help people,

to protect people
and to find people.

So to find somebody alive
is a great result for the team.

But more importantly, it's a great
result for that young man

and also for his family
and for the community at large.

If the young man had died,
it would have been reported as

another person who succumbed
to their injuries

in the outdoors in the Highlands,

which is all too common
an occurrence.

In Inverness, all available units
are scouring the city

for the suspects
in the hit-and-run case.

They're also wanted for
other offences

and seem to be on a crime spree.

But something has been found
that can help to narrow the search.

Just looking to get a vehicle
recovered, if possible.

The stolen van used to
run into the cyclist

has been abandoned
not far from the scene.

It's immediately seized to be
searched for forensic evidence.

For DS Chris MacLeod,
this could prove key to the case.

The way we look at it is
every contact can leave a trace.

So they've used this vehicle
to hit him off the bike

and if we can sort of evidence that

this is the vehicle
that was used to do that,

you know, then that helps
prove the case.

These suspects have criminal records,

they're known drug users

and have recently been seen
carrying weapons.

In charge of searching for evidence

is forensic scene examiner
Ian Anderson.

Some mention of them threatening
people with a wrench.

Yeah, or a knife, aye.

There's a wrench in the footwell.

Oh, yeah.

So we've got witnesses that have
said that they were in the vehicle,

but witnesses can sometimes
disengage with the court process.

So you want to have other lines
of inquiry or opportunities

to evidence them having been
in the vehicle.

Contents of the van could be vital
in proving what happened.

They'll be sent to the lab
for testing.

But meanwhile, the two suspects
are still on the run.

They need to be found and arrested
before anyone else gets hurt.

We'll put every available
unit that we have

to look for the couple
that are involved.

Go back over addresses
that we've already been to.

We'll continue to speak to people
who are known to them

and see if we can get
updated information,

but at the minute,
we don't know where they are.

So as night falls,
Detective Michael Cosh

and a colleague head out
to knock on some doors.

So there's a couple of addresses
which would be of interest to us.

So we're away now just to see
if we can get a reply at that doors

and make some enquiry to see
if the persons we're looking for

are either there or have been there.

For us, it is a case of generating
a bit of unrest amongst locals.

People will start to become
disgruntled that the police

are coming back and forth
to their door.

What we want to do is also
make it hostile for suspects,

so we don't want people to be
taking them in to hide them.

So if we're attending at
these people's addresses,

the chances are that they'll be
less likely to take them in

and it limits where they can go

and gives us a better opportunity
of capturing them.

There was some information that
they may have been here

at some point in the day.

It's just a case of making
some inquiries to see

what we can glean from that.

So it's a potential that the person
we're looking for is either

in there or certainly
has been there,

but obviously, there's no reply
to the door and we were...

..kind of not very politely
told to go.

Undeterred, the officers
continue asking questions

at other addresses
known to them in the area.

KNOCKING ON DOOR

We're just doing
door-to-door inquiries.

And as they speak to more people,
they finally get a tip-off.

We actually have received
a little bit of information.

A knife, maybe underneath a bin,

which is not too far from where
we're looking at just now.

We'll just go and see if
we can locate that

and either remove it or seize it as
part of our ongoing investigation,

should it become of interest to us
sort of later on.

OK, yeah.

Looks like we've found
what we've been told about, so...

..take it, go get some stuff

I mean, it might not mean anything,

but someone's felt the need
to alert the police to it.

The person who is said to have
put it there is a person involved

in the incident we're dealing
with today.

So we have it,
we can secure it and keep it.

And if it becomes relevant
in due course,

then we'll be able to use that.

And if not, then that's fine.

At least no-one else
can get access to it.

The knife can be added to
the evidence against the suspects.

Since the hit-and-run, they are
classed as highly dangerous

and need to be in custody.

But the police still haven't
found them.

And now, hours after the incident,
they could be miles away.

Keeping the communities
of the Highlands safe

isn't just about fighting crime
or finding missing people.

The division has
7,000 miles of roads,

many of which need to be
approached with care.

The Highland area is really unique.

It covers such a large
geographical area.

We don't have motorways,
but we do have high-speed roads,

and we've got country roads
that are bendy, that are twisty.

And when you introduce
adverse weather into that,

that can provide
an additional challenge.

But equally, it's a beautiful
part of the country

and it's a wonderful area to police.

Road deaths in the Highland Division
are the highest in Scotland,

but recently the numbers
have been coming down.

In 2023, 16 people lost their lives,

20 fewer than the previous year.

Today, traffic cops Scott McLay
and Mark Campbell

are out on patrol at
the western edge of the division -

the Isle of Lewis.

Scott and I both used to
work over here,

so we know our way about
a little bit.

We'll probably go and do
some speed checks somewhere

and just see where
we end up, basically.

I think it's really important
that we obviously support

not just our colleagues that are
working in the island areas,

but the communities that we serve.

And just because they're living

in a more remote part of
the divisional area,

they shouldn't receive any less
of a service for that.

We've taken the unmarked car,
maybe catch offences

that you wouldn't otherwise catch
in a marked car,

but got a text from somebody
over here that

the car had been seen in the queue
for the ferry this morning,

and it's obviously done the rounds.

So a few people will be aware
that we're here.

This is a small community,

so it's hardly surprising that Mark
recognises the driver.

If you can typically see the load,

there's a fair chance he's close
to being over weight.

And for the van driver, Innes,
Mark is also a familiar face.

For Innes to be charged,

the weight of his van
will need to be confirmed,

which means a trip back to the ferry
terminal to use the weighbridge.

The rear springs give us
an indication

of whether the vehicle's
potentially overweight.

And he's certainly shown
a fair bit of weight -

nearly on the bump stops there.

This vehicle is permitted
to be 3.5 tonnes.

So he's probably maybe,
I don't know...

Maybe I'll eat my words,
but I think he's probably about

3.8, something along those lines.

Every vehicle will have
a plated weight

so if that safe weight
is being exceeded,

it will affect the braking,
the steering.

And when you introduce country roads
or rural roads into that,

it increases the risk, then,
of that vehicle coming to grief.

You count as well, so you need
to either sit in it or stand on it.

Just stay still.

So it's 3,940 kilograms,
so whatever that is.

We do find sometimes in the rural
communities, there can be an element

of complacency, given the remoteness
of where they live

and also maybe
the more limited interaction

that they might have
with the police.

But today, one rural biker
who's pushing his luck

is about to have an interaction
with the traffic cops.

because they've

Motorcyclists are vulnerable
road users.

Thankfully, last year we saw
a reduction in the number

of motorcyclists that were killed
on our roads in the Highland area.

However, we still had four
road deaths.

So four is four too many.

In Inverness, it's 24 hours
since detectives started hunting

for a man and a woman wanted
for attempted murder

and a crime spree
involving vehicle theft and weapons.

They are still at large,

but overnight,
there's been a development.

Police have received information
on where they could be hiding out.

Just go in and if anybody is
getting lairy, just get control.

They can both be arrested
Section 1 for attempt murder

based on CCTV evidence
and other witness evidence.

We rely heavily on information,
whether that's from intelligence,

witness information,

whether that's through
private space CCTV.

All the information that we can
gather generally tends

to be in the hands of the public

and a police force is only as good
as the public allows them to be.

units who are just going to head up

to see if we can capture them
within the address.

At the minute, there's probably not
grounds to force entry

to the property,
even if they're in there,

because there's not any warrants
in place, but the urgency comes

from the fact that they've caused
a risk to several members

of the public, caused damage
to various people's properties,

and so we're trying to nullify
a continuation of that behaviour.

They're catching folk off-guard.

Nobody's expected
or seen this coming.

So when people are behaving
unpredictably, it's not, um...

Folk don't feel safe
around that, you know?

It's thought the suspects
could be armed and dangerous,

so Chris and his team approach
with caution.

been causing a nightmare

for citizens in Inverness arrested

and can be dealt with in respect
to this incident now.

So it's ideal.

As the Highlands' only city,
Inverness is the north of Scotland's

nightlife capital - never livelier
than on a Saturday night.

pretty much my whole life.

You know, I see people I know
every day in this job,

and every person I know probably
knows I'm a police officer.

For me, it's not a big issue.

As long as I kind of conduct myself
when I'm out in a proper manner,

I don't go out much!

where the whole of the city centre
blacked out?

Honestly, that might have been
the scariest experience of my life.

and it was, like, pitch-black.

I was just like...

I was like, "Um, I think I'll stay
in the van, do you know that?"

As the pubs call final orders,

that a man has punched a taxi

parked at a rank, smashing its
window, and then running off.

a previous call to the police

where he'd been racially abused
quite...quite severely in his taxi,

and he'd put a video
on social media about it.

on Facebook.

It was quite widespread
throughout Inverness.

It was a horrible video.

I was really uncomfortable
watching it.

Bilal is... He's just doing his job

and no-one should go to their job
and get abused like that.

When you deal with racism, there
has to be a zero-tolerance approach.

As a police officer, I have seen
a lot of these incidents.

I have no idea why anyone
would want to be racist.

When I was growing up in Inverness,
I didn't see it as a problem.

But since I've joined the police,

I've realised that there
is a problem with it,

which can be difficult to deal with.

Obviously I'm very sorry that
happened to you. I thought...

I thought the way you handled it
was brilliant. Seriously.

You know, I wouldn't have been calm
in that situation,

so I thought you did amazing.

customers we deal with

at similar states of intoxication.

The rough end of people's behaviours

and, you know, the final straws

So we do feel sympathy for them

because we have to deal
with the same kind of issues.

The next step for Laurie and Aidan
is to check

if the man who smashed Bilal's window
had been captured on CCTV.

Aidan and Laurie spot a lead.

The suspect seems to have been
picked up by another taxi later on

at a nearby hotel.

I phoned all the taxi companies
and they don't have any pick-ups,

but there's a fair load of private
taxis that drive about Inverness

and don't log into anything or that,
they just pick up where they want,

so we're going to go up to
Premier Inn and check their CCTV,

see if I can get a reg
for that taxi driver

and take it from there.

100 miles west of Inverness, the
Isle of Skye feels like a world away

from the lights and hassles of
the city.

10,000 people live here,

spread across almost
650 square miles.

So the police rely on locals
to report anything suspicious.

Tonight, PCs Cameron Hopkins
and Darren Reid are on their way

to investigate something
that seems not quite right.

Had a bit of a strange call
coming in about a rucksack sitting

at an edge of a road
on an unsecured property,

and a dog walker
noticed it yesterday,

so she's just a bit concerned

that there might be somebody
needing help.

Did she describe the bag at all?
A rucksack.

She states this is a wooden
cabin-type property, down the track

near the old, disused
Broadford Hospital.

The door of the property was laying
open and there was no lights on.

She knocked the door a few times
and got no answer.

She was walking past there again,
same house was still in the same way

with the wide door open
and no lights on.

Think we're going to
Ghostbusters with this one.

The rucksack was also there
at the top of the drive.

Sounds a bit creepy.

The lady made a fair assumption
that there could be somebody dead

Finding their way in the dark
can still be a challenge.

The thing about Skye is that there's
very little street lights.

from neighbouring properties
or anything like that.

It's pitch-black when you're going
to these things and it does add

to the kind of...
the eeriness of it all.

Just down by the harbour, so we've
got a rough point on where this is.

There's a kind of like dirt track...

There can be the thought
that there could be something

more serious going on or is needing
our help, is needing assistance,

so it's very, very time-critical
we get in there and we find out

what's going on and make sure
we can provide assistance.

To help them find their way
in the dark,

they've arranged to meet the woman
who originally raised the alarm.

Cameron and Darren first
come across the child's backpack

reported by the woman.

It's a kid's jacket.
It's like a school bag, innit?

a child's maybe come to harm.

We had no reports of any child
in distress that day.

It could just be something
as innocent as somebody's left it

when they've got a lift,
they've forgot about it.

It's better just to go and check.

There's nothing suspicious in
the rucksack, so Cameron and Darren

can move on to check the house.

Yesterday, when I came back,
went on the walk, then it was open

when I came back an hour later.

And then today, when I've
come back, it's still open.

where someone doesn't say anything

and there's a dead body in there
or someone hurt,

and I thought, well, what's... No.

Yeah. I'd rather do that
and look silly and nothing wrong

than ignore it
and someone's hurt in there.

We don't really have any concern
for anybody at this moment in time.

Yeah. Strange, strange.

Could have been something, it could
have been worst-case scenario,

but, yeah, we're thankful
that it's not.

But just to be sure, Cameron and
Darren make a few more enquiries

to clarify who exactly lives here.

From the initial reporter, she knew

that the owner of the property
just stayed round the corner,

so we managed to get in touch
with the owner's sons,

who had a contact number for one of
the employees from the local hotel

who were residing there.

We've just made contact with her
and she was happy for us just to go

inside the property and make sure
there were no signs of disturbance.

We've let her know and she's quite
happy, and we've just stood down.

Yeah, just good intent
from the reporter,

but ultimately nothing for us.

In these sort of scenarios,
better to be safe than sorry.

I know, certainly, if I was to phone
something in like that, I would...

who smashed the window of a taxi
while the driver was inside.

that's got picked up in a taxi,

The officers are closing in
on the suspect,

but before they can follow up
this lead,

another, more urgent call comes in.

Having been restrained, the woman

What I gathered from the cops
there, that she's arrested

for police assault, so I don't know
what's happened up until the point

that she's assaulted the police, but
she was arrested for police assault,

and she was kind of resisting
the arrest,

and that's why they've had
to take her to the floor.

Well, I mean, that's what
you join the job to do,

is to help protect people,
and if that's your colleagues,

you're going to do the same
for them as well, so...

After the earlier assault on
the taxi driver, this is the second

violent incident Laurie and Aiden
have dealt with tonight.

It's something they face daily
in their role

keeping communities safe
for everyone.

Police assaults are on the rise.

No-one should go to their work
and be assaulted,

but, unfortunately, as police
officers, we're a lot more liable

to that because we're dealing with
people that can be very violent.

When we're dealing with people who
have kind of been the victim of

someone who's been quite threatening
and abusive towards them,

I think the victim of that,
they can relate to us

cos obviously we deal with that
every single day

and you can relate to this person,

you know, you've gone through
these sort of things,

so you can show sympathy,
you can show empathy.

You can be understanding
with these sorts of things.

It's just something
that we put up with

and have to deal with,
unfortunately.
