your protagonist.

Where did the inspiration
for her character come from?

- Right, so my process
is very much about research,

and when I first read

about the first female
tightrope walker

to ever, um...

...to ever uh...

Sorry, yes.
The main character was inspired

by a real-life circus artist,

but as far as
her inner dialogue,

her perseverance,
her drive,

her unwavering belief

to do whatever
she set her mind to,

all of that was inspired
by my mom,

Evelyn.

- She raised me
as a single mom in the city

with very few resources
after we lost my dad.

And as a child,
I remember thinking

that some kind of luck or magic
was at play.

Somehow we always got by.

Somehow
we still managed to laugh

and smell the roses.

Somehow we healed.

But much like tightrope walking,

there's nothing magical
about it.

She got us both through
by taking one step at a time,

balancing both strength
and softness,

never once letting us fall.
