Rain, fear and mud
dragged us towards darkness.

It banished me from my country
and my family.

But some lost even more.

Sergeant.

Good people
who fought to stop the current

and lost their lives doing so.

When the sky opened up
and the water swallowed us,

we lost ourselves.

But doors leading to hope opened up.

The sacrifice of those
I miss so much,

brave and upright people,

gave me strength to keep on
and bear witness.

That's something
we journalists can do

with the power of words
and the strength of images.

That's why, dear Luis,

I'm sending you
this article and these photos

that were found seven years
after Arnal died.

As you know,

objects live longer than us.

To do good, at times.

This isn't one of those
optimistic stories you like

and feel comfortable with,
but it's the truth.

The truth.

That's why I hope you'll publish it.

Not just in remembrance
of those who are gone,

but for your grandchild
and those representing the future.

Their future that is yet to be built.

The time we are living in
still belongs to those with power,

who lack morals and humanity.

It often seems that the crimes

that brought them success
will remain unpunished.

But we,

whose only wealth
is memory and truth,

we'll always possess words.

On December 14, 1957,
the Turia river overflowed.

The flood devastated Valencia,

overtaken by water, mud,
chaos and misery.

This is a tribute to the flood
victims and to the people of Valencia

for their dignity, bravery
and solidarity in such a dark hour.
