the day that Robert left us

to sleep by himself

so long as I kept the door open between us

so he could see me if he woke up.

And once he closed his eyes,
he always, always stayed asleep.

And I clearly remember
this swell of happiness that evening.

I realized that I was truly relaxed,

that everything had been fine after all.

I was enjoying my time alone
with Nicholas and with myself.

And I decided to finish the evening

with a nice glass of wine on my terrace.

[doctor] If you could look
straight ahead for me please?

[Brigstocke] It had been such a long time
since a woman had shown me concern.

I liked feeling her hands on me,
taking care not to hurt me,

- being careful with my pain.
