Ooh. This is a song that lyrically,

it just takes you on this journey.

This song, it's one of my favorites.

I love the storytelling aspect.

It's about relationships that didn't work out.

My wife and I, we got married at 18 years old,

but it wasn't like we didn't have relationships before then.

If it wasn't for those broken relationships along the way,

I wouldn't be married to my beautiful wife

and have the four kids that we have today.

I know that she's the love of my life

and the person that I'll be with forever.

You gotta really love it when somebody can take their time

and find a song that really fits them

and then they can actually bring it to life and you feel it.

I'm always jealous when I hear a singer

who's equally comfortable in the baritone range

and in the tenor range.

It's fantastic you can do that.

You know, for me, the essence of all music is surprise.

When you approach a song,

look for something different every time you sing the song. That's powerful.

It could be incremental, only maybe you would notice it.

That's the constant quest for a singer, to find something new

in a song you may have sung a hundred times.

That's really good. When you sing it,

sing it for the one that messed up.

I bet it get better if you sing it to her

'cause you know who her is, we don't. [ Laughs ]

I know who -- I know she's singing to him. [ Laughter ]

I'm a huge fan of Sting.

He's equivalent to like, the Beatles and Elvis.

He blew me away.

That really helps me, personally.

I was on stage with Wiz, and I catch myself crying,

she watched me fight for my life.

There's a difference between very quiet and loud,

like a professional singer.

I mean, the whole thing about Tina

was the incredible joy she could express. Yeah.

That tension between those two things

What I love about Tina as well

is she never made herself a victim of her story.

And in 2020,

when I was protesting the murder of George Floyd,

I got shot by the police with a rubber bullet in the face.

That bullet broke my entire face,

it broke my cheekbone, caused an incredible laceration.

I could have stayed in that story, stayed in that pain.

But I made a decision not to be a victim of that,

but take charge of my life.

And I think that's how you make your dreams come true.

What an emotional journey. You know, and you feel that.

One of the big things that you learn as a musician,

it's like, don't waste the pain. Exactly.

There were moments where I was struggling a little bit vocally.

I think it's a matter of releasing your neck.

Before I go on stage to sing,

I spend five minutes just tapping...

Learn from the legend, from the legend. ...top of my head and just say to myself,

It wakes up the nervous system,

and it just reinforces your belief in yourself.

I was going through, like, a heartbreak.

When you love someone

and that love is not reciprocated,

it unlocks a lot of insecurities.

Am I'm not funny enough?

I literally deconstructed myself

because I really wanted to make the person like me,

and I ended up losing myself.

I tend to be a little shy when I'm offstage,

but being here on "The Voice," Gwen has helped me a lot

with my confidence to become the artist

that I really want to be.

Gwen: Jose is an incredible singer.

He can do anything with his voice.

But the one thing that was missing is personality.

It reminds me of my partner Kashif.

We have been together for eight years.

Kashif is a person who has opened me up to so many

new, wonderful experiences

that I probably wouldn't have been as open to in the past,

and this is one of them.

I'm so excited about every phase of this competition,

and I'm so thankful that I have a partner

who saw the possibility within me when I didn't even see it.

It is very rare that we get to see queer love expressed.

So, I want to show people, I guess the word is possibility.

to make it their own and make us feel it?

and I think it has a really strong message

of keeping your faith and just being resilient.

My family is going through a really hard time right now.

My dad was diagnosed with stage IV cancer.

Oh, so sorry.

I even debated if being here was a good thing for me to do

because I really want to be there for my family.

But my dad said there's nowhere else he'd rather me be.

And when I told him that you stole me, he started crying.

Oh! He was so excited.

I think that this song has such a strong message

of not wanting to lose hope.

On the day of my battle, as I was performing,

my dad underwent surgery for something called T-cell therapy.

He has very minimal strength right now,

but when I get to call him,

my mom says she instantly sees a smile on his face.

And those are rare these days.

I'm so excited to be sharing this experience with him

and my family when we need it the most.

His fight is encouraging me to stay here

and give this my all.

I'm going to sing my heart out.

considering what her family is going through,

I think that's what's going to help drive her through
