hello everyone and welcome to the 100th

episode of analyzing evil an episode I

would have never imagined reaching when

I started this channel over three years

ago and I can't thank you all enough for

making this a possibility which is why

our future villain for this episode is

one of the most requested characters in

the history of this channel Johann

Liebert from Monster perhaps the most

terrifying villain ever to appear in the

anime manga medium Johann Liebert is

every bit the terror that he's made out

to be an enigma whose all-consuming

Darkness threatens to swallow the entire

world for the sake of his own mad dream

to become the monster that he believes

himself to be in this video we're going

to explore everything about Johan from

his Origins to his philosophy and to do

that we're mostly going to be examining

the information we're given about Johann

and the manga but I will be using some

of the information that can be found in

the sequel novel another monster as well

as a bit from the anime that I found

more helpful than its manga counter art

for that reason and because the Monster

anime at the time of the making of this

video is stuck in licensing hell outside

of this intro this entire video will be

composed of panels from the manga now

because there's a fine line between

analyzing a character and just retelling

the entire story I won't be covering

each individual crime committed by

Johann in this story nor will I be

examining every interaction he has with

other characters instead we'll be

examining each of the most crucial

aspects of his character as reference

without further Ado let's begin Johan

was born to Veera cherna later known as

Anna a political activist and an unnamed

Soldier Anna was by all accounts an

exemplary person the daughter of a

Moravian Elementary School teacher she

received High marks at school and was

said to have been athletic and

exceptionally beautiful as well a woman

who would eventually go on to receive a

degree in the field of genetics perhaps

because of her association with the

world of genetic science Anna was

noticed by government agency that plan

to select individuals whom they believed

represented the ideal check men and

women who would bring about a population

of superhuman individuals that would

lead the Czech Nation to unprecedented

prosperity and glory and this is how

Anna came into contact with our unnamed

Soldier a man who was also the

half-brother of Klaus Poppy the man who

had later become known through his

infamy as Franz bonaparta and for a time

franz's brother Faithfully executed his

mission according to the parameters

given to him by his superiors however

this man fell in love with Anna and not

wanting to lie to her any longer he

revealed the truth to her and attempted

to escape the country with her so they

might live in peace far away from the

people who wanted to use them as

playthings for their dark experiments

unfortunately Anna and her lover would

be unable to escape the grasp of their

overseers and the brother of Franz

bonaparta was killed during their escape

and Anna was taken to a secure location

where she might rear her children

according to the specifications of her

new Masters thus the children that would

come to be named Johann and Anna later

Nina would be born in May of 1975 under

the watchful eyes of these mad

eugenicists at the three frogs and

abandoned Inn and Tavern that would

serve as the children's home for the

first six years of their lives though at

this time they essentially remained

nameless as their overseer sought to

keep them as malleable and subject to

their will as possible by depriving them

of even the most basic human

characteristic a name however in 1981

the government's plan to create this

race of super beings was superseded by

franz's own pet project that being his

desire to reshape existing human beings

into whatever he might desire them to be

and it was during this year that Franz

along with Peter chapek went to retrieve

a twin of Anna's choice to return with

him back to the red rose Mansion to

endure his experimentation now though

Franz held his grisly seminars where he

would attempt to erase the personalities

of the children who attended them by

re-educating them through his Macabre

story books it would seem that Nina

hadn't yet earned the right to attend

these seminars instead being confined to

a dark room entirely isolated from the

outside world which we can assume was

done to erase part of her personality in

preparation for the reprogramming of the

seminars to come however all of franz's

work would be done in by something that

I'm sure he never expected to affect him

love specifically the love of Anna the

Elder once Franz became more acquainted

with Anna and her twins he developed a

twisted bond with them Desiring to

possess the woman he had subjected to

imprisonment and the deprivation of her

own children and at the same time

becoming equally enamored with the twins

who he viewed as precious gems who by

all means should be protected from the

horrors of what he had done so to do

just that Franz orchestrated the mass

murderer of the 46 individuals who were

in one way or another involved with his

work that were currently attending a

party at the red rose Mansion however

Franz made a grave error just prior to

his poisoning of these people letting

Nina out of her confinement so she could

wander the Mansion before stumbling upon

this horrific scene in Maria Theresa's

hall now when he let Nina out of her

prison Franza declared to her that

people could become whatever they wish

to be and after Nina stumbled upon the

murder site he implored her to forget

everything that she had seen at the

mansion and that neither her nor her

brother should ever become monsters but

that was nothing but a dream as though

Johan wasn't the one who had to endure

the barbaric imprisonment in a desolate

room like his sister had he rather than

Anna was the one who was inadvertently

affected by them the most and why that

is has a lot to do with one of franza's

Stories the nameless monster but we'll

touch on that more a little later on in

this video now prior to returning home

Franz informed Nina that the two of them

would have to live on their own now a

revelation that saw Johan breaking out

in tears at the thought of the hardship

ahead and from here Johan and his sister

would make their way to the Czech German

border along the way meeting a couple

that offered them food and shelter and

they even contemplate adopting them as

their own however Johann fearing the

abuse of more adults who sought to

control him and his sister killed them

so he and his sister could continue on

unburdened but two young children with

little to no survival skills traveling

on their own aren't exactly well

equipped to do just that and by the time

they made it across the border Johann

and Anna were starved and nearing death

in an inhospitable stretch of land it

was here that Johan would encounter the

scenery for a doomsday an important

component of Johan's identity that we'll

be discussing more later on now Johan

and his sister were in great distress in

this moment but to make matters even

worse the man who eventually found and

saved them General wolf separated the

two because of the overwhelming Darkness

he felt emanating from Johann sending

him off to the dreaded kinderheim 511

while his sister was taken to the

orphanage run by ernatiza kinderheim 511

was a windowless prison of an orphanage

where its residents were subjected to

experimentation meant to turn them into

super soldiers totally subservient to

the government however because of the

darkness present within Johan he would

undergo no such experimentation and

instead he was confined drugged and kept

under surveillance and though we get a

general idea of what Johan went through

in the manga how the instructors viewed

and treated him as well as how Johan

went about eventually destroying them

all as explained to us quite well In

this passage from another monster in

kinderheim 511 there was a boy who was

always kept sedated because he held the

words that could destroy any person the

teachers thought he was a monster and

kept him locked underground such was the

terror that they felt towards him that

they swore they could see ten horns and

seven heads but one day the boy

developed resistance to the drugs and

awakened he manipulated his jailers and

slipped back among the pupils but the

boys didn't know who he was because none

of them knew each other's names or

histories the boy hated everything about

the facility so he began secretly

plotting to have everyone kill each

other other first he would steal all of

their memories so that they couldn't

even remember their own names and then

offer them the path to death through

their torment but the boys never even

realized that they were being controlled

and so this incredible fervor raced

through the orphanage after this

massacre at kinderheim 511 Johan and his

sister would enter the care of the

lieberts and the story of monster proper

begins in Earnest but now it's time for

us to unpack what we've learned about

Johann from his horrific backstory and

examine just what that has molded him

into first in order to understand just

how Johan evolved into a monster we need

look no further than the story of the

nameless monster penned by Franz

bonaparta which I'll read for you now

once upon a time in a land far away

there lived a nameless monster the

monster was dying to have a name so the

monster made up his mind and set out on

a journey to look for one but the world

was such a very large place the monster

split in two and went on separate

Journeys one went East the other headed

west the one who went East Came Upon A

Village there was a blacksmith who lived

at The Village's entrance Mr blacksmith

please give me your name said the

monster I can't give you my name replied

the blacksmith if you give me your name

I'll go inside you and make you strong

said the monster really said the

blacksmith if you make me stronger I'll

give you my name the monster went into

the blacksmith and so the monster became

out of the blacksmith

Otto was the strongest man in town but

then one day he said look at me the

monster inside of me is getting bigger

Munch Munch Chomp Chomp gobble gobble

gulp the hungry monster ate up Otto from

the inside out once again he was a

monster without a name next he went into

Hans the Shoemaker however Munch Munch

Chomp Chomp gobble gobble gulp once

again he went back to being a monster

without a name then he became Thomas the

hunter but soon Munch Munch Chomp Chomp

gobble gobble gulp back he went to being

a monster Without A Name the monster

next went to a castle to look for a nice

name He Came Upon a very sick boy who

lived in that castle if you give me your

name I'll make you strong said the

monster the boy replied if you can make

me healthy and strong I will give you my

name so the monster jumped right into

the boy and the boy became full of vigor

the King was overjoyed he announced the

prince is healthy the prince is strong

the monster became quite fond of the

boy's name he was also quite pleased

with his Royal life in the castle so he

controlled himself no matter how

ravenous his appetite became day after

day despite his growing hunger the

monster stayed put inside the boy but

finally the hunger just became too great

look at me said the boy the monster

inside of me has gotten this big the boy

devoured the king and all of his

servants Munch Munch Chomp Chomp gobble

gobble gulp the castle was lonely now

with everyone gone so the boy left on a

journey he walked and walked for days

and then one day the boy came upon the

monster who had gone west I have a name

said the boy and it's such a wonderful

one at that but the monster who went

West replied who needs a name I'm

perfectly happy without one after all

that's what we are nameless Monsters the

boy ate up the monster who went West at

last he had found a name but there was

no longer anyone left to call him by it

such a shame because Johan was such a

wonderful name now Johan and Nina as far

as we know never attended any of franz's

seminars however they were given a copy

of this book to read on their own and it

seems to have had minimal impact on Nina

but Johan on the other hand ended up

shaping his entire personality around

this one story as when he read this

story Johan concluded that he and his

sister the children without names were

two halves of a nameless monster just

like in the storybook therefore just

like the monster in the story whatever

the Nina part of the monster experienced

the Johann half experienced as well and

once Nina came back from the red rose

mansion and told Johann of all that went

on there save for the part about not

becoming monsters which may or may not

have changed this situation entirely

Johan absorbed that information and

believed that he was the one who had

those experiences rather than his sister

which indirectly traumatized the young

Johan to the point where his already

established experiences with his

caretakers and how they treated him his

sister and his mother mixed with these

vicarious experiences made it so Johan

developed a deep mistrust of any and all

authority now with the aforementioned

belief that he had experienced the

traumatic misdeeds at the red rose

Mansion his murder of the couple that

tried to help him and his sister and the

massacre at kinderheim 511 it's clear

that Johann had become a deeply damaged

individual and rightfully so but what

makes this all the more terrible is the

fact that Johann was undoubtedly born

with anti-social personality disorder

the disorder that defines a person's

development into a psychopath or a

sociopath however just because a person

is born with this disorder doesn't mean

that they'll end up becoming either and

there are plenty of people who have aspd

that live normal and healthy lives and

although Johan had already been given

numerous disadvantages when it came to

his development it was still possible

for him after his escape from the three

frogs with the right care and attention

to shed the traumas of his Youth and

develop somewhat normally for Johan was

still only six years old at this point

and more than capable of working past

his issues with the proper care though

admittedly even if he was placed in a

loving environment with access to a

great amount of therapy he may have

still developed into a monster but

whatever chance no matter how small it

might have been that Johan had of

developing normally was entirely

eliminated once he became a resident of

kinderheim 511 and in the passage from

another monster that I read for you

earlier regarding his treatment there

supports the idea that perhaps Johann

was already far past the point of no

return as even the expert brainwashers

at kinderheim 511 were afraid of the

monster lurking inside of Johann though

again if he was taken to a regular

orphanage like his sister had been

things may have turned out quite a bit

different for Johan regardless Johann is

without a doubt a person suffering from

aspd but before we start talking about

that component of his personality let's

first briefly talk about who Johan is

outside of this disorder starting with

his appearance Johan has been described

as Perfection incarnate handsome and

well built his appearance is nothing

short of beautiful and coupled with his

charm and Charisma this makes for a man

who is easily able to disarm anyone he

engages with as Johan plays into his

surface level advantages exceptionally

well by always offering a calm and

composed disposition that serves to give

him a heightened level of

approachability but Johan isn't just a

pretty face well-versed in The Art of

Seduction and captivation he's a genius

a man who can speak several different

languages and fully understand complex

concepts with little to no effort and a

testament to just how intelligent he is

is found in his far-reaching plans plans

that are years in the making that were

all born from his own determination like

his establishment of an underground

banking system that made him

outrageously wealthy and his plot to

inherit sherwald's Fortune so he might

control the entire German economy but

aside from his inherent characteristics

that give him enormous advantages in

advancing his goals everything about

Johan's surface level Persona is as

manufactured as his name and the real

Johan is defined by his aspd now

although Johan doesn't display every

single traditional symptom of this

disorder he has more than enough of them

to be diagnosed with it a few of those

being arrogance a sense of superiority

and being extremely opinionated being

callous and cynical and recurring

problems with the law including criminal

Behavior but there are five that he

displays that are essentially perfect if

you could call them that which really

saw the idea that he's suffering from

this disorder and let's take a moment

now to examine each of these symptoms as

they pertain to Johan by looking at some

examples of these behaviors that he

displays throughout this story the first

of those being a lack of empathy and

remorse Johan is a person who is

entirely without empathy he handles the

lives of others with about as much care

as one might handle garbage and he

treats people as nothing more than tools

to be used and then discarded in order

to advance his dark aims and save for

perhaps his willingness to keep Dr Tenma

alive there is little evidence that

Johan ever considers the feelings of

another person and he certainly never

displays any remorse for any number of

the horrid actions he takes I said I'd

be giving examples of these symptoms in

order to better understand just how they

apply to Johan but honestly there isn't

one instance of his lack of empathy

appearing that's worth noting more than

any other as again there is not a single

time that Johan ever shows himself to be

empathic or remorseful for any of the

crimes he commits and therefore

examples of this symptom are readily

apparent within nearly every action that

he takes over the course of this series

however the next set of symptoms which

I've chosen to discuss together because

they're all related to Johan's talents

as a manipulator or a different story as

some of the examples we can find

associated with them really drive home

just how horrifying this man really is

those symptoms being the disregard for

right and wrong persistent lying or use

of Deceit to exploit others using charm

or wit to manipulate others for personal

gain or personal pleasure and repeatedly

violating the rights of others through

intimidation and dishonesty now Johan

isn't just a talented manipulator he's a

master at it and this designation more

than his Myriad crimes and lack of

empathy is what makes him such a

terrifying character and the first time

we experience the sight of him is when

he instigates the massacre at kinderheim

511 now this was the first verifiable

instance of Johann using something that

isn't part of his aspd but Central to

his personality nonetheless his innate

leadership skills and and though Johan

is a person suffering from aspd he shows

himself to be Adept at understanding the

inner workings of humanity as when

Hartman asked what he had done in order

to get these 50 people to kill one

another Johan replied that he threw a

scrap of cloth doused in oil into an

open flame and that hate is born when

people come together and that he only

poured a little oil on it which is

Hartman exclaims to Tenma during this

exchange is a remarkable observation for

a boy of only 10 years old and this

ability to understand the inner workings

of the darker aspects of humanity is

what enables Johan to manipulate people

who are already immersed in darkness and

this is exemplified in things like his

ability to inspire fanatical loyalty in

his few followers such as Roberto or

Kristoff but a great example of just how

minutely and toony is with the darkness

within others is when we see him coaxing

people into doing what he wishes with

simple suggestions like the three

separate serial killers in Frankfurt who

murder three people that need to die for

his plan after Johan writes their names

in the sand in a park or when he

convinces Reinhardt Dinger the tax taxi

driver who sheltered Johann and his

sister after they escaped from the

hospital to begin killing people he

views his scum by replying to his

declaration that the scum should all die

by stating in his mesmerizing tone that

we don't need these people however it's

his ability to manipulate largely

innocent people that makes Johan

infinitely more terrifying as although

being able to win criminals over to your

side with mere suggestions or your

presence alone is quite the feat it's

another thing entirely to be able to do

the same with innocence and Johan is

able to accomplish this seemingly

impossible feat by again using his

intimate knowledge of the darker side of

humanity to subtly or not so subtly

convince people to do what he wishes

them to do not only that but he's able

to so accurately slip into a role of

normalcy that should be near impossible

for a person so holy representative of

aspd as though many people who suffer

from this disorder and engage in

depravity are able to blend into society

for a Time the cracks eventually begin

to show and their facade is revealed to

be just that but Johan he's a able to

fill this role and give off the

impression that not only is he harmless

but nearly perfect a highly intelligent

amiable and beautiful man who captivates

everyone around him with all aspects of

his person luring unsuspecting victims

in with the honeyed poison flowing from

his mouth this is what enables Johann to

commit some of the most horrendous and

heart-wrenching crimes we see in this

series like the massacres at kinderheim

511 and ruenheim but there are many

instances of Johan using his talents to

manipulate the innocent like when he has

several children who he's volunteered to

take care of at an orphanage essentially

kill themselves by playing a suicide

game where the winner becomes one of the

chosen just like Johan and the kicker

here is that he does this simply for

enjoyment and he says as much to Carl

and lot when they're speaking with him

about his care for the orphans a

declaration that seems innocent enough

in the moment but one that becomes all

the more Sinister once his manipulation

of these children is revealed this

wouldn't be the only instance of Johan

playing with the minds of children for

his own Amusement though as he does much

the same to milosh when he convinces him

to to go and find his mother to

determine whether or not anyone wants

him and knowing that he won't find that

Johan ensures that he'll fall to a state

of despondency and kill himself though

Grimmer fortunately saves him from doing

so there are more examples of this

Behavior to be found in this story but

these few examples are more than enough

to drive home how Johan's Talons as a

master manipulator and all these

components of his aspd are truly

horrific but now that we've gotten a

handle on how Johan developed into who

he is as well as what makes him tick

it's now time for us to examine how this

all applies to his personal philosophy

and how that philosophy guides every

action that he takes as I mentioned

earlier Johan believes himself to be one

half of a nameless monster and in

accordance with his inspiration for this

idea Johan has concluded that he like

this Fantastical storybook monster must

set out across the world and devour all

in his path until he is the last person

standing the nameless whose designation

is such no longer means anything with no

one around to wonder just who or what he

is and what reinforced this idea for

Johan was the scenery for a Dooms that

he encountered when he and his sister

were escaping from Czechoslovakia a

landscape of utter desolation broken up

only by Johann and Anna two halves of

one nameless monster that are left

standing to view the very end of the

world an image forever etched into his

mind that would give him a clear goal to

work towards obtaining now because of

this he's essentially developed the

purist and most diabolical form of

nihilism possible that being the idea

that one of the only truths of this

world is that death is the one thing

that unites us all and that life is

meaningless in the face of Oblivion and

we have several quotes from Johann to

support this idea there's nothing

special about being born not a thing

most of the universe is just death

nothing more in this universe of ours

the birth of a new life on some corner

of our planet is nothing but a tiny

insignificant flash death is a normal

thing so why live for you that's why I

came back to life but you finally come

to realize it now haven't you only one

thing is equal for all and that is death

being born really isn't that uncommon

almost everything in this world is meant

to die in this world a Life Born is

nothing more than an insignificant spec

and shouldn't even be counted as an

existence death is natural this is the

horridly cynical outlook on existence

that Johan operates under and if his

Ambitions hadn't been foiled by his

rediscovery of the nameless monster

storybook the entire world would have

likely ended in the same way that the

lives of the children and caretakers of

kinderheim 511 had ruinheim on a global

scale that would have certainly left

Johann and his other half the last

people alive on earth that is of course

before he absorbed her to become whole

once again but he did ReDiscover the

storybook and upon doing so his desire

to eradicate all of humanity and bring

about the realization of his doomsday

was abandoned in favor of accomplishing

the perfect suicide his own death

achieved only after he had eliminated

everyone who knew of his existence a

path to obscurity and Oblivion worthy of

a nameless monster such as he but why

why after rediscovering this book did

Johan decide to abandon his previous

course well first of all this flash of

memory inspired him to discover the past

that he had forgotten when his sister

shot him in the head and when he slowly

began to piece together the puzzle of

his Origins Johann realized something

that he hadn't considered before maybe

he isn't the monster that he thought he

was born to be when Johan discovered

that nearly everything about him from

his birth to his upbringing was

manipulated by outside forces I believe

he realized the Folly of the mission

that he believed to be his purpose and

turned instead towards ending the

monster he had been made into and the

people responsible for making him into

one perhaps he desired to do so out of a

sense of shame but I think it's more

likely that he the man who had once

believed that he was the master of all

around him wanted to destroy all traces

of the horror that was his existence

we've already established that Johann

suffers from aspd as even though it

might be possible it's highly unlikely

that a person could develop into the

kind of monster that he did without

having this disorder but as I I

mentioned earlier his possession of this

disorder by no means meant that he was

guaranteed to develop into a monster and

more importantly that he wanted to be

the monster he became and to support

this notion we have the few times we see

Johan expressing emotion in this story

the first time is when he's faced with a

hard reality that he and his sister will

be forced to fend for themselves after

they escape the clutches of their first

set of overseers but we see him getting

emotional three more times after this

when he sees his sister for the first

time after waking up from his brain

surgery when he's listening to Carl talk

about his familial aspirations and when

he rediscovers the storybook the first

tour of note because it shows that Johan

was not always a stone-faced void of

emotion and that he did experience

normal human emotions as a child but the

last two are far more important as they

show us that Johan underneath all that

he had been made to be always wanted to

live a normal life and that all the

traumas he experienced as a child were

not something that he could tough out as

a heartless monster unaffected by normal

human emotion but the horrid truths of

existence that gave him an overwhelming

feeling of Despair and hopelessness and

I believe that part of the reason he let

Dr tanma get as far along as he did in

his efforts to stop him was not just

because of the Gratitude he felt towards

him for saving him but because Johan

figured that if he allowed this man to

continue his fervent pursuit of him that

maybe just maybe he'll stop me but Johan

isn't one to leave his fate entirely in

the hands of another so to end it all to

end every horrid thing he feels and the

barbaric work of those who made him feel

them he chooses to go out on his own

terms and he nearly succeeds but through

the kind hand of Dr Kenzo Tenma he saved

once again a monster defeated and caged

in their last encounter whether real or

imagined we see the last heart-wrenching

aspect of Johan's character the

Revelation that his mother's

indecisiveness when choosing which child

to give up for experimentation always

stuck with Johann another indication of

his Humanity in the face of his

monstrosity but in the end we find an

empty bed where our comatose Johan

should be and though there are many

possibilities to be had with such an

image I believe that this scene is meant

to reinforce the idea that Johan though

he might physically be there was an

unperson a non-entity skirting the line

between existence and Oblivion who in

the end may as well not have existed at

all and at this end who was Johann

Liebert he was a child crafted by the

cruel hand of eugenesis one that was

meant to facilitate their dream of

creating racially Superior superhumans

that might lead their Nation to a

glorious future in this capacity Johan

was subjected to imprisonment

brainwashing and experimentation for the

first 10 years of his life and it was

from these not so humble beginnings that

Johannes innate disorder went from being

an unfortunate handicap to a full-blown

problem that would ensure his Evolution

into one of the most terrifying human

beings to ever exist believing himself

to be a nameless monster Johan would

Endeavor to become the last man standing

at the end of the world after he'd

obliterated perhaps not just all of

humanity but every living being as well

and in his efforts to do just that at

Johann was responsible for an Untold

amount of suffering on a personal and

mass scale ending the lives of possibly

hundreds of people whether directly or

indirectly that is after he'd

manipulated them to the point of utter

despair by Plumbing the depths of their

souls but as this diabolical goal began

to Fall to Pieces a sliver of johann's

humanity began to appear and though he

still went about manipulating and

murdering dozens of people after this

point johann's heart turned towards

self-destruction rather than doomsday

which I'm sure saved all life from

Extinction Johan was indeed a monster a

demon with ethereal claws who could

squeeze the very soul out of any person

he encountered but if we keep in mind

the few times that were treated to

Johan's Humanity we can definitely make

the claim that Johan never wanted to be

the monster that he became and it was

this realization that sent him down a

path that only Johan could believe to be

representation of a psychopath that

and though we can sympathize with the

fact that his Evolution into one was

largely facilitated by outside forces we

can't ignore the many crimes committed

by this titular monster a man who came

frighteningly close to embodying the

purest form of evil thank you all for
