[Melody of Golden Age]

[Episode 38]

Considering your feelings on this matter,

I won't make things too difficult for them.

I will give you three days

to think it over carefully.

Take care, Vice Minister Lai.

Stiffy.

Stiffy.

Don't cry, Chuichui.

I'm fine.

I'm fine.

Liuniang, you can't just not eat all the time.

Open the door. I will bring you a bowl of soup.

If you have any grievances, once you've eaten,

I will join you in confronting the Shen Mansion.

I have had a close brush with death.

No matter if it's the White Ghost or the White King Yama,

I will scratch him until he cries.

My daughter, I know how much you're suffering.

But a woman must have love and appreciation to flourish.

A person who doesn't appreciate you, what use is he to you?

We can't just get knocked down by every little thing.

I promise you to find you a handsome young man

who will cherish you greatly and heed your advice.

How about that?

Handsome young man.

I've come to see Yan Xing.

Liuniang, it's me, Pan Chi.

Liuniang.

Liuniang has been shutting herself in lately and does not open the door for anyone.

Come in.

She's taken my words to heart?

Madame.

Lady Jin, was there a man who just entered Liuniang's room?

Madame, what nonsense are you talking?

What do you mean, a man?

Liuniang is a female official of the Ministry of Justice,

not a lady sequestered deep in the household.

Of course, she should meet with guests and deal with official business.

Liuniang is naturally virtuous.

Even though Liuniang is not my biological daughter, I've watched her grow up.

Everyone knows it.

Previously she married Shen Du.

I was frightened.

I hoped that she would find a good marriage.

But now that she has divorced and returned to the Yan Mansion,

she should at least consider the reputation of the Yan Mansion.

What do you mean?

Don't you know?

Now the entire Yan Mansion is under the watch of the Imperial Inspectorate.

Outside, it's rumored that the daughter of the Yan family

has become an abandoned wife.

If now there are men coming and going,

I'm afraid others would think that our Yan family lacks discipline.

Madame, clearly, it was Liuniang

who did not want that heartless Shen Du anymore.

How dare you call Liuniang an abandoned wife?

Let me tell you, Madame. I've tolerated you for a long time.

- I'm at my wit's end with you. - I'm well-intentioned.

What do you mean by well-intentioned?

Stop fighting.

Stop fighting.

Stop it.

Isn't this family misfortune?

You two, stop it now.

Liuniang.

- I'm with all good intentions. You… - You guys also shush.

Madame, Mother, stop arguing.

Father, we need to go out for a bit.

Lady Ru.

- You're talking nonsense. - Look.

- Isn't that a man from outside? - Stop fighting.

- You're still making excuses. - Stop fighting.

- My Lord. - Why are you hitting me?

Look at her. Are you going to do something about her?

Be gentler, you hit my face.

You are…

You are from Tongming Hall.

You are Yan Xing?

There's a small alley up ahead where you turn.

Get out from there. No one will know.

Why help us?

For the sake of sisterly affection.

For the virtue of women.

- Thank you. - Thank you.

Please hurry.

They're here.

- Miss. - Quick.

Liuniang.

Chuichui.

Quick.

You finally arrived.

I was worried you wouldn't make it out.

Fortunately, it was a close call with no harm done.

The White Ghost has really joined forces with Lai Luozhi?

From now on, I will have nothing to do with Shen Du.

How did you manage to evade the Imperial Inspectorate's surveillance?

You haven't left your home in days.

That has made Lai Luozhi lower his guard somewhat.

It seems Chuichui understood my letter.

Yan has its watchers.

In three days, meet Chi at the pawnshop.

It means around the Yan Mansion, Lai Luozhi's watchers are surveilling.

In three days, meet me at the pawnshop.

Lu Chuichui is waiting for us at the pawnshop.

We will find a way to bypass the secret lookouts.

To Zhanxin.

It turns out she is Kuang Zhanxin's friend from Tongming Hall.

So her helping me today is because she thinks

I avenged Kuang Zhanxin?

Solving the case and clearing the injustice

was never about seeking a reward.

Today's gains are all for the good intentions of the heart.

A kind of mutual help.

Chuichui, now, Lai Luozhi has unchecked power.

I have thought of a solution.

Why don't you go with Jiang Langxing and temporarily leave Xiang'an?

Go out and lay low for a while.

I feigned compliance with him yesterday.

He should lower his guard lately.

We can take this opportunity to escape.

Liuniang, why don't you leave with us?

I need to stay here.

Why?

You can't still be clinging on to the White Ghost, can you?

Take good care of yourself.

Chuichui.

Father.

This is your first long journey.

Remember, nothing is as good as gold.

I have prepared for you much gold.

It's convenient for use on the road.

Come on, put it on your back.

Be careful on the road.

- Be obedient. - Father.

Alright, be obedient.

Stiffy.

Chuichui. It's alright now.

Stiffy, for my sake, you are leaving Xiang'an

and also giving up the identity of an inspector.

Will you feel regret? Will you feel it's a pity?

As long as you are with me,

anywhere is a place for me to make my mark.

Right. From now on,

we shall be a pair of chivalrous heroes who punish the wicked and eliminate the evil.

Okay.

Thank you very much.

Take care.

Farewell.

Give it to me.

What do you mean by "disappeared"?

It's my incompetence. Miss Lu and Jiang Langxing have indeed lost their traces.

I'm afraid they have already left Xiang'an.

Then leave the city and search everywhere.

Even if you have to dig three feet into the ground, you must find her for me.

Yes.

She was deceiving you all along.

Why pay so much attention to such a woman?

Get out. Get out.

[Lai Mansion] Dongzhou garrison pay respects to Vice Minister Lai.

The Governor of Yangyue City requests to see Vice Minister Lai.

Commandant of Yuanmeng City is here to pay respects.

Vice Minister, the carriages of the noble classes who have come to submit

are crowding the streets near the mansion. They just won't leave.

Now, 70% of the officials have pledged allegiance under your leadership.

We will have difficulty accomplishing things with only the literati.

Are there any movements from the commanders in various places?

All the commandants from the various prefectures have sent letters of allegiance,

all expressing the desire to use the opportunity of the grand assembly

to come to Xiang'an to give thanks to you.

Good.

In the six garrison towns, four commandants have pledged allegiance.

The remaining two are not worth fearing.

The second day of the second month.

It seems that

the second day of the second month is a good day.

The moths flying to the flame.

Born in the morning, dead by evening.

Not entering the cycle of death. The immortal cycle of rebirth.

The Ziwei appears in the world. The blessing of Dacang.

The emperor's blessing is forthcoming. The world for Luozhi.

The emperor's blessing is forthcoming. The world for Luozhi.

Liuniang.

Pan.

The Imperial Inspectorate has not yet rescinded its surveillance on the Yan Mansion.

You just come out like that. Aren't you afraid of being implicated?

Lai Luozhi has been trying to implicate me for many times.

I'll accompany you to go out and clear your mind. Why can't I?

I've heard that now the Imperial Guards and the Imperial Inspectorate are in cahoots.

From now on, I'm afraid Xiang'an will see no clear skies.

After hearing too many rumors, it's easy to harm one's health.

Better to find some fun.

Madam. Director Yan.

Director Yan, you always claim yourself to be devoted to official duties.

How come you are not to be seen at the Ministry of Justice now?

Instead, you are here flirting with someone who is of no importance.

Mr. Shen, Liuniang has finished her shift. She is affiliated with the Ministry of Justice.

Whom she chats with and whom she makes friends with

are none of the Imperial Guards' business.

Throughout the court of Dacang, aside from the Imperial Inspectorate,

who would dare not to listen to the word of my Imperial Guards?

Shen Du, just look at what you've become now.

The common people are all saying

that the black and white Yamas are walking side by side.

From now on, the human world is a purgatory.

Do you think being shunned by everyone like a venomous snake

is a matter of honor?

Do you still remember the words you once said and the vows you made?

People are all subject to change.

Liuniang, don't waste your words on this kind of person.

Let's go.

Liuniang, sit here and rest for a while. I'll be right out.

Liuniang, do you still remember this is the place where we first met?

When the shadow arrives, at noon there is an endpoint.

With the shadow's length, the explanation is in the endpoint.

This is what you taught me.

Since the moment we first met,

I've imagined what your future would look like.

You will become a female official pleading for the people.

Your reputation will last for centuries.

Now, it is only you

who still believes in the ambitions in my heart.

In my eyes, you have never been someone's daughter,

nor someone's wife.

You are Yan Xing, the female official of the Ministry of Justice.

You are the most formidable case-solving expert in Dacang.

And even more so, my confidant.

I only hope that you can live freely and happily in the Ministry of Justice

to fulfill your own ambitions.

I will definitely stand behind you silently.

But regretfully, everything has now changed.

The court is full of undercurrents with no fairness or justice to speak of.

You are caught up in it and it has become your burden.

The world is vast and there isn't just one path to officialdom.

Perhaps you are right.

With our power, even if we travel all around the world,

we could also settle matters that are unsettled and redress cases of injustice.

Yan Xing, are you willing to join me

to escape this place of disputes and travel the world?

As long as you are willing,

I can take the lives of this pair of scoundrels immediately.

If you let them go now,

I'm afraid they won't come back.

That's just right.

To avoid any eyesore.

Rest assured.

I will ensure that the Ministry of Justice vindicates the Shen family.

It's just a matter of a memorial to the throne.

Is there anything else you need to explain?

I have already told my family that I will go out and play for a few days.

They are very supportive.

The world is vast and wide.

One can have an open and magnanimous heart

and be untroubled by mundane matters.

Once outside the city,

all disturbances are no longer related to you and me.

With the sky as the cover and the earth as the home,

stride the winds with high aspirations.

Your Majesty.

It's alright. I'm fine.

I'm fine.

Your Majesty.

Guards…

Your Majesty, take your medicine.

News from the palace.

The Empress Dowager's illness has worsened.

It seems she won't have much time.

In that case,

I shall visit her in person.

Who goes there?

Hearing that Your Majesty's condition has worsened,

I'm deeply concerned.

I've come to pay respects to Your Majesty.

I'm fine.

A few days of rest should suffice.

Vice Minister Lai, there's no need to worry.

You just need to do well

Behave and keep to yourself a bit

lest others say you don't understand the rules.

Thanks for your instructions, Your Majesty.

It seems

the news that Your Majesty's illness is fatal is not false.

How dare you!

In front of me,

how can you be so disrespectful and impudent!

Don't get angry.

Human life is fragile.

Someone come!

You've come to harm me.

Your Majesty, how could I harbor such intentions?

I have always been utterly loyal.

Lai Luozhi,

you were of lowly birth.

Had I not supported you,

how would you possess your current status and wealth?

Yet you harbor a disloyal heart.

You are worse than a beast.

If you were not suspicious or prone to jealousy

and could not tolerate others,

how would you have ended up with today's retribution?

I think I have been just to heaven and earth

and I have a clear conscience.

I didn't fail Dacang.

How can I allow you to judge me?

What a phrase, "a clear conscience".

Do you still remember

Ms. Shu who was framed and driven to death by you?

Ms. Shu?

Who on earth are you?

What is your relation to her?

Indeed.

In the vast imperial palace,

who would remember a woman presented by a neighboring country

a concubine driven to her death?

Of course,

even more so, no one would remember

her child.

Zhi,

you must remember

it was Zhou Xu who killed your mother.

Once your father is dead,

there is no longer a way for us to survive in the entire palace.

The Empress and the Zhou clan behind her

now have unchecked power.

They will not let you live.

But do not be afraid.

I will protect you.

Even in death,

I will ensure you survive.

Use my death

to trade for my child's chance at life.

Zhi, you must survive.

You have to live on

and take back everything that belongs to you.

Do you understand?

Do you understand?

Zhi.

The wet nurse used her own son to exchange for my life.

From then on, I became Lai Luozhi.

The wet nurse's pair of twin daughters and I

depended on each other for life.

Mother.

People laugh at the moths flying to the flame.

Little do they know they are but mayflies themselves.

Mother.

After my mother's death,

you who have a high status

thought this was but a palace scandal.

You ordered that this matter not be discussed in the palace again.

It is for this very reason

the maid who came to Dacang with my mother, my wet nurse,

fooled everyone

and took me out of the palace.

That year,

inside the ruins,

the charred corpse of that boy…

My wet nurse's son.

Of similar age to me.

He willingly entered the fire in my place.

Mad.

Truly mad.

All of this

was all thanks to you.

It was because of you.

So it should be me who repays you this consequence.

What do you want?

You won't live long.

The young emperor has yet to come of age.

I think this world

should be handed over to me,

his uncle.

This throne was rightfully mine.

Only my ascension can better continue the Xiao family's lineage.

The spirit of my late father

would also feel deeply consoled on behalf of the ancestors.

Your Majesty,

please write the abdication edict now.

Abdication edict?

Delusional fantasies.

Just think,

my sister, Yong'an, is still in custody.

As for Prince Xian,

it's time to arrange a good place for him.

How dare you!

I am now the Regent.

It was Your Majesty who promoted me to the position.

Yong'an funded troops for a rebellion. There is irrefutable evidence.

From Prime Minister Zhang, I can easily dig out a charge

to imprison Prince Xian.

What's the next step?

Your Majesty, can you really not guess it?

I entered the palace at the age of 14.

I spent my whole life in struggle.

But ultimately, I still neglected to guard against others.

You could well wait until after my death.

Won't any kind of imperial edict be up to you to fabricate?

But you are just a man fishing for fame.

You just want to ascend to the throne rightfully.

The day of the grand assembly

is also the anniversary of my mother's death.

It's also the final deadline I'm giving you.

When the time comes, my mother will see her son returning in a righteous and dignified manner.

Her death anniversary will be the day her child ascends the throne.

Shen Du, I know what you're up to.

Counting the days, they should have arrived by now.

[Nanlang Country]

This is the boundary marker of Nanlang.

We have finally arrived.

- Master. - Mr. Chen.

Xing, I've received your message via the pigeon.

I figured you should have arrived by now.

But you have arrived even sooner than expected.

Master, Xiang'an City is now filled with Lai Luozhi's minions.

For safety, we dared not rest on the way.

The things you want to know are indeed not simple.

So it turns out you had Mr. Chen

secretly go to Nanlang to investigate the background of Lai Luozhi.

[Bi Luo] I heard from Chuichui before

that on the tombstone of Lai Luozhi's mother, there was only the name Bi Luo,

but no family surname.

So I had Yeyun go and investigate.

On the partially burnt paper used for worship, there's a drawing of a conch.

While on the sacrificial money used by Dacang for ancestor worship,

such patterns are rare.

It is said that in Nanlang, there's a worship of conches.

Yeyun found traces of spilled ox blood on the ground.

Using ox blood as an offering is exactly a custom of Nanlang.

Master,

Bi Luo turns out to be Ms. Shu presented to the former Emperor of Dacang by Nanlang.

That's right. However, Bi Luo had an unknown past.

I'm afraid even her own son does not know it.

After the grand assembly tomorrow,

everything will be settled.

After waiting for so many years,

if she willingly surrenders the throne tomorrow…

It is still somewhat lacking something.

Long live Your Majesty!

The tribute envoy from Xichen presents treasures for an audience.

The tribute envoy from Nanlang presents treasures for an audience.

Today, all nations come to celebrate.

Together they contribute to the grand occasion.

Wishing for cordial international relations and peace over the four seas.

Stability at the root ensures national peace.

It is necessary to start anew together with the people.

Only when all under heaven are of one heart can glory endure for a thousand years,

ensuring longevity and stability.

Selection of talent solely based on virtue will naturally stabilize the world.

Harmonizing the world and ensuring longevity and stability

are the responsibilities of a great nation.

Greetings, Your Majesty.

May you live long!

The grand assembly at the court is a universal celebration.

The Empress Dowager is delighted and has recovered from illness.

Her Majesty grants a banquet for the ministers.

Thanks to the Empress Dowager's great favor.

The Empress Dowager has just recovered. Her Majesty should not overwork.

If the old illness relapses, that would be bad.

Does the Empress Dowager have a decree

to be announced during the grand assembly to all officials?

Vice Minister Lai, you've more and more ignorant of the rules.

Thanks to Vice Minister Lai's reminder.

I indeed have something to announce.

Recently, I suddenly fell seriously ill and had no time for court affairs.

The various matters were temporarily entrusted to the Imperial Inspectorate for supervision.

Vice Minister Lai has worked quite hard.

Now, my health has fully recovered.

The Emperor has been diligently studying the laws of governance with the Senior Tutor.

Starting from today, Vice Minister Lai need not continue the duty of regency.

He will be relieved of the Imperial Inspectorate's tedious tasks.

Go and rest at ease.
