[Episode 25]

Disrespect of the Huo'e.

Disaster comes from the sky.

This

is probably a threat too.

If we continue to investigate

and stop them from causing trouble,

then you and your loved ones

might encounter an unforeseen disaster.

How can you tell Madam this?

Do you want her to worry?

With her intelligence,

it's only a matter of time before she figures this out.

- I… - I just gave her an early heads-up.

♫ May you also look up to see the brilliant stars and moon ♫

♫ No matter the endless rivers, until you came into my life ♫

♫ Rushed encounters in time, with shallow fates ♫

♫ The winter in warm memories ♫

♫ Never mind the destined solitary fate ♫

♫ Blazing a lifetime of splendor ♫

♫ I have waited until time bloomed into flowers ♫

♫ The ice and snow slowly melting ♫

♫ I hear those gentle words ♫

♫ He said he loves her ♫

What's wrong?

Have you seen the physician?

I'm fine.

Thank you for your concern.

Don't push yourself too hard.

I would be worried.

♫ Let the vast universe change ♫

♫ Let's be together ♫

You have to stay well.

Otherwise, no one will make me tonics.

Shen Du.

I really don't have the energy

to argue with you.

Alright.

I'm sorry.

What's wrong with you?

Shen Du.

I enjoy investigating cases.

I can lose myself in pursuit of the truth,

but I don't want to involve my family.

The Huo'e Sect

wrote the words on the body to send me messages.

They had everything planned out,

deliberately putting on a show to us.

They are warning us.

This is a warning.

Are you afraid that further investigation

might involve your family?

In Xiang'an,

if we hadn't arrived in time,

Caiwei and the others would have died.

If…

If when I was in Yingzhou,

they really wanted to harm my family,

what should I do then?

We are so far away.

How can I keep them safe?

I've been thinking for two hours,

and I don't come up with any solution.

If you want to,

I can arrange for a carriage to take you back to Xiang'an.

About the matter in Yingzhou,

you should stay out of it.

What about you? What will you do?

Me?

Do you want me

to escort you back to your home?

We cannot go back.

You are the Great Chief of the Imperial Guards,

and I am a Chief Clerk of the Ministry of Justice.

We're here

on a task.

I knew

you would definitely not leave.

A moment of emotion

will not affect your passion for the case investigation.

Don't act like you know me well.

Now you are back.

This is the Yan Xing I know,

being eloquent and mean.

You are stubborn

and don't fear those in power.

I…

I know you're worried about your family.

I assure you

that what you are worried about

will definitely not happen.

Before coming to Gannandao,

I made some arrangements in advance.

So far,

everything is under control.

Do you remember the letter from Xiang'an?

An urgent letter from Xiang'an.

Who sent it?

Madam Xu.

Of course I remember.

Every year during the Winter Clothing Festival,

the Empress Dowager

will go to the Li Mountain Hot Spring Resort to have a holiday,

and reward some officials' family members

to accompany her.

Madam Xu's letter informed me

that she's already

put the Yan family on the list.

Within the sight of the Empress Dowager,

I don't think anyone

dare to create trouble.

Well well, Shen Du.

But then again,

there is indeed something

that is not that important

yet anyway,

related to you.

What's the matter?

Ji Dafu, brother-in-law of the headless body suspect,

is here.

This Ji Dafu is very special,

because both the victim and the suspect are his wife's brother.

Please

[Ji Dafu] spare me.

When will

my brother-in-law's case be settled?

You can't find the head.

Alright.

Let's just bury the body and let the dead rest in peace.

Ji Dafu.

Be patient.

The case is still under investigation.

Governor Mo, were you looking for me?

I've heard that you have

some ideas for this case.

There's something unusual about this case.

I am still investigating.

I suggest

investigating this case

with the bride case.

If we do so,

the investigation will take more time.

- Then I fear… - Mr. Pan.

What do you mean?

I don't think you deserve

to be the top detective.

And you've set a rule of never meeting with the employer.

I think you just don't want

to be embarrassed.

Today, in front of Mr. Mo,

tell me

whether you can solve the case and catch the murderer

within five days.

If you can't, refund the money to me,

so I can find someone else.

If I can't solve the case, I will refund the money.

But I'm close to finding out who the murderer is.

Who is the murderer?

The murderer is

Half-faced Demon.

In order not to refund the money,

that friend of yours

said something about demonology,

and it really worked.

After hearing it, Ji Dafu

was terrified and then left.

But as for Governor Mo,

he wasn't so easy to bluff.

Mr. Pan.

I have already reported the bride case to the Ministry of Justice

to get it closed.

Governor Mo.

I have provided a new statement.

I have read it.

Then why did you close the case so hastily?

Xu Jize has a new testimony,

which might get a lighter sentence.

The eyeless body case is clearly complicated,

and it's connected to the headless body case.

Mr. Pan

This is not Xiang'an.

This is not Xiang'an.

This is Yingzhou, which had been caught in military disaster for decades.

The situation in Yingzhou is unstable.

Although a prefecture is established,

still, Xichen is covetously eyeing us.

In the history,

Yingzhou has been invaded by Xichen multiple times.

To pacify the turmoil in the Western Regions

and prevent the war from arising,

we have to unite the people.

However, do you know

what matters to unite the people?

Please tell me.

What matters

is the lasting peace and stability.

It's about eradicating crimes with strict laws,

solving every case,

and catching every criminal.

We need to convince people

that as long as the officials of Dacang

are here for one day,

Yingzhou is a city where people

can live with peace of mind.

So,

troubled times call for harsh laws.

Xu Jize's head

is destined to be hung on the gate tower

and becomes the one that deters others, right?

Er Laipi is extremely vicious,

deserving to die.

No further investigation needed.

Xu Jize

raped a married woman,

is doubly guilty.

And he broke the frontier law.

Death penalty is inevitable.

However, I can promise you

to let him die peacefully

and I won't let his head

be hung on the gate tower.

You told me this matter

in such detail.

You're not just to tell me

how embarrassed Pan Chi was, right?

You want to tell me

to be more understanding of Governor Mo

intervening in the case

and being eager to close the case.

His view

is destined not to be the same as us,

who are solely pursuing the truth of the case.

You want to tell me

to pay more attention

to the situation of Governor Mo.

Must not doubt

that he has a heart for the people.

I want to tell you

that people are complicated.

Don't jump to conclusions that quickly.

Shen Du.

Shen Du.

How much do you

trust Mo Qianzhi?

He was the person I trusted the most.

And now?

Now…

Now…

he's the one I wanted to trust the most.

Anyone who wants to find out the truth

is bound to go through

what you are going through now.

No matter how small the details are,

or how close the people are,

first of all, don't be afraid to doubt.

You have to verify them.

Trust

may also

be a power for investigation.

The Huo'e Sect has deeply rooted in Yingzhou.

Shen has a close relationship with Mo.

[Jiang Mansion]

- Just leave. - Take another look.

- Just leave. - Take another look.

Stop it.

- Just leave. - Take another look.

[Jiang Mansion]

Owner, another pot of wine, please.

Alright.

Yan Xing.

What are you doing here?

What are you doing here?

Take a look.

Take a look.

Take a look.

They are all new.

Liuniang.

What are you doing here?

I…

am here to walk a pigeon.

Walk a pigeon?

Liuniang.

Do you know the specialty of this shop

is roast baby pigeon?

But then again,

don't you think you're being cruel

to the pigeon?

Making it witness with its own eyes

its own inevitable fate.

This bowl

is a toast to this poor pigeon.

Are you

drowning your sorrows in liquor here because Ji Dafu said you're incapable

this afternoon?

Indeed, good news stays within,

but bad news spreads far and wide.

I don't care about Ji Dafu at all,

so I don't take his words seriously.

Then because

the case is closed?

I heard you got a new statement on the bride case.

Anything new?

New?

Nothing new.

Just some useless statements.

However, to collect the evidence,

I went to the cell to see Xu Jize.

After asking him,

when I was about to leave,

he suddenly said to me…

Mr. Pan.

You must be a scholar from a humble background, right?

With your courage and eloquence,

you're not serving as an official in the Ministry of Justice,

instead, you're doing this menial job,

as a folk detective.

I'll take a wild guess.

You and I are of the same kind,

burdened by a humble background.

[Huang Mansion]

Please don't shut the gate.

My poem has been submitted to you for over a month.

I wonder if Mr. Huang has read it.

What a lowly person!

How dare he

to ask for a recommendation from Mr. Huang.

[Huang Mansion]

We are not on the same path.

No matter how angry I am,

I won't vent my anger to the weak.

Weak?

No.

I never bully the weak.

I bully

those noble classes

who always oppress and insult

people from humble backgrounds.

They are born to rise to high-ranking officials,

treating us from humble backgrounds

as their slaves.

That's true that I laid hands on their brides.

I just wanted them

to feel humiliated.

Over a hundred years,

people from humble backgrounds

have been suffering from this humiliation every single day.

Now,

do you still not think you are wrong?

Yes.

In the Miss Du case,

I made an oversight.

The so-called oversight,

you mean you only found out that the Li family wasn't even a noble class

at the beginning of the crime, right?

Indeed, you are the top detective.

After Miss Du was kidnapped,

Er Laipi said

the Li family was wealthy.

Li Hongfa first made his fortune

by doing small business.

But he wanted his son to become an official.

Because

he's a merchant.

So Li Zimo was the same as me.

Later, Li Hongfa spent a lot of money

to whitewash himself

as the one from a noble class.

Then, Li Zimo could apply for the examination.

So you decided

to stop committing crimes,

and then started arguing with Er Laipi.

Yes.

We had a pretty fierce argument.

Later on, we stopped because we might be followed.

But from beginning to end,

I've been meaning to send Miss Du back.

But a murder had happened.

I really did not kill Er Laipi.

I almost returned Du Xiaowan unscathed.

I will report exactly what you said today,

as a reference for sentencing.

According to the law,

it does get you a little lighter sentence.

But in my heart,

you are a true coward.

When the brave are angry,

they would go against the strong.

When the cowards are angry,

they would go against the weak.

You dared not touch those who are powerful and truly oppress you,

yet you laid a hand

on those weak women.

This is not revenge.

You're nothing but a coward who's afraid of the strong.

My sentence has settled.

I will surely die.

You've just arrived in Yingzhou.

You don't understand Governor Mo.

From the day that I got caught,

I had no intention of getting out of here alive.

You're right.

I deserve it.

I brought this upon myself.

No.

I should never have been born.

In my next life,

I'd rather be

an illiterate farmer,

than be

a knowledgeable

scholar.

Stop drinking.

Owner, don't serve him any more wine.

Get him a bowl of mutton soup noodles.

Alright.

Here, enjoy.

The mutton from the Gannandao

is really delicious.

Trust me.

Instead of drowning your sorrows in liquor,

better to soothe them with a bowl of noodle soup.

Give it a try.

How is it?

It tastes really good.

See? I didn't lie to you.

Laughing heartily under the open sky.

Striding high across the divine land.

Though the noble prize themselves,

I regard them as mere dust.

Though the lowly demean themselves,

who says they aren't important.

Flapping my gown, I gaze at the mountains.

Washing my feet in the long river.

Liuniang.

Why are you suddenly saying this?

I just think

that this poem is grand,

revealing with just a few words

the reality of oppression against those from humble backgrounds.

It's so exhilarating.

Once this poem was released,

it spread through the teahouses and taverns of the Imperial City.

And even at that time,

when those young noble classes of Xiang'an City

went out to eat,

didn't dare to show off,

fearing to stir up the anger from the commoners.

You've said so much.

You don't just want to praise my literary talent, right?

Of course not.

More than this.

I admire your courage.

As long as one always

has the courage to confront the rotten authority,

sometimes a single phrase,

or even a poem,

can hold great power.

I know.

You are disappointed by the situation

those from humble backgrounds are facing in Dacang.

But as long as none of us gives up,

I believe

there will always be one day that those talents

who are from humble background will be valued.

I wonder

if this bowl of noodles is delicious,

or if it's your words,

has motivated me.

I feel refreshed right now,

and can investigate ten more cases.

No, no.

We can't get more cases

in Gannandao.

I have no time to rest now.

I can't hold on with more cases.

There's something

I want to tell you.

If you are abused,

don't tolerate it.

People say no one can escape from White Ghost.

In my opinion, Shen Du is just a paper tiger.

If you want to,

I will definitely do everything

to help you escape.

Have you misunderstood something?

No one has abused me.

No one has abused you?

How did you get the wound on your forehead?

Whenever I see you,

you'll have a new wound and an old one.

Didn't you get that wound at the Shen Mansion?

Indeed, I got this wound at the Shen Mansion.

How should I put it?

Anyway,

Shen Du really hasn't abused me.

I married into the Shen Mansion as a substitute bride,

it's somewhat absurd,

and not what he wanted,

but overall,

Shen Du is a decent husband.

He takes good care of me and my family.

Moreover,

I will leave him sooner or later.

Whether it's Shen Du,

or me,

both are well aware

that this day will soon arrive.

Why?

Because he has someone in his heart,

and that is not me.

This position

was never meant to be mine.

Madam, Governor Mo knows you are busy at official duties,

and has specially invited you to come to the most famous hot springs in Yingzhou,

Yixi Hot Spring, for rest and relaxation.

Madam.

The Yixi Hot Spring is no less than the royal Li Mountain Hot Spring.

It is the water of a thousand years

from Xiling Mountain,

accompanied by natural geothermal heat.

Dozens of spices

are added to the hot spring.

It's perfect

for both men and women.

The efficacy is well known.

Around the Gannandao,

couples wishing for children

will come to this hot spring to soak.

Thank you for the introduction.

You have worked hard guiding me all the way.

Please go rest.

No, no.

I haven't assisted you with the gauze clothes.

Who is it?

It's me.

Why are you here?

Well,

to take a soak.

This is for women.

You should soak somewhere else.

There's only one Yixi Hot Spring.

It's for both men and women.

Besides, Yingzhou Prefecture arranged

us to soak together.

If we were separate,

it would be strange.

What would those outside think?

Those outside?

Outside, there are a few maids and servants.

Even if it's just for show,

I have to soak with you.

I'm coming down.

Wait, wait.

Don't come down yet.

Turn your back,

and close your eyes.

Are you too shy

to soak with me?

No way.

I was afraid you'd be coy

and make me feel awkward.

Alright, you can open your eyes now.

Come down now.

Now I can't see anything.

Where should I come down from?

Oh no. He can't see things in dark.

I should have left one light for him

until he comes down.

Just wait.

Let me help you.

You said there's always someone in my heart.

Who is that person?

Mo Xiuxiu.

No way.

That would expose me to eavesdropping

on him and Mo Qianzhi.

Shen Du.

Why would you eavesdrop on me?

Can't you ask openly?

I am asking now.

Do you answer?

Of course, I do.

I've heard

you don't get close to women.

I deeply agree with this.

In the Shen Mansion,

not to mention the concubines,

even maids are few.

And,

you always scorn on me.

Doesn't that explain it?

I don't get close to women

because I already have a girl I like

in my heart.

Then I've misunderstood.

I met her

when we were little.

I have kept

her wicker piglet till now.

Because of her,

I could survive

in the detention center.

It's her.

Thanks to Mo Xiuxiu's brother pled for him,

so he was spared the death penalty

and sent to the detention center.

Every night,

she would sneak into the back garden

and bring me comfort and food.

In those dark days,

that's the light I waited for every night.

I don't even know her name,

nor have I ever clearly seen her face.

And the only gift I gave her

was a brass whistle.

This whistle was given to me by my father.

I remember she told me,

one day,

she'll take me out with honor and integrity.

One day,

I will overturn the case for the Shen family

and take you out with honor and integrity.

I didn't see her again

for years.

It's like she just disappeared.

Until one day,

just as if it were fated,

she became my wife.

♫ Endless long night, the moonlight reflects on the western window ♫

But the funny thing

is I that had no idea

she was the girl in my heart.

Later on, I found it out.

I hope it's not too late.

I want to tell her.

In my heart,

from beginning to end,

it's always been her.

♫ I can't forget every memory ♫

♫ From desolation to a poem ♫

♫ Watching the past, through the misty rain, until the clear skies ♫

♫ Love is shining in each other's eyes ♫

♫ You've long melted the frost in my heart ♫

♫ Words can't express how much I love you ♫

♫ Day by day, we probe and test ♫

♫ We reach the end of time without notice ♫

♫ Wish to stay with you ♫

♫ Want to keep you by my side ♫

♫ Through the obstacles of gusty winds and torrential rains ♫

♫ Want to be your moonlight ♫

♫ To accompany you till the dawn ♫

♫ To just forget the length of time ♫

♫ Wish to stay with you ♫

♫ Want to be with you, never to forget one another ♫

♫ Clouds and sea always meet somewhere ♫

♫ Wish to be with you forever ♫

♫ Waiting from youth till hair turns gray ♫

♫ Just keep you in my heart ♫

- I… - You…

- You… - I…

You go first.

How did you know

that I made that wicker piglet?

You've hesitated for so long on the way,

just want to ask this?

I've known from the start

that it wasn't made by Xiuxiu.

You're amazing.

I want to make one for Du as a birthday gift too.

But no matter how,

I made it so ugly.

Can you switch with me?

Okay, take it.

Thank you, you are so kind.

[Shen Mansion] On the day of my birthday,

I got the wicker piglet.

I wanted to thank you,

but then I learned you had been taken away by your family.

I was so happy

that my dad didn't abandon me.

He arrived a little late on business trip.

I didn't notice anything else.

Unexpectedly,

you've kept the wicker piglet all along.

Later on,

the Shen family got confiscated.

This wicker piglet

became one of the few things

that I can keep.

So I've kept it all along.

It also reminds me

of those good old days

when my father taught me how to make it.

I only realized that this Liuniang

was Yan Liuniang recently.

Detention center.

You said you would come for me.

Why didn't you come later?

Because…

I crawled in through the dog hole

in the back garden.

Later, they discovered

this hole

and blocked it.

And later…

You didn't need me to come for you.

Thank you.

You still came to take me home.

♫ One glance affirms the fate between us ♫

♫ Upon meeting again, I know you're the one for me ♫

♫ Gaze at the stars, dreaming about the old times ♫

♫ We are forever bound ♫

♫ Before the candlelight, do not ask my thoughts ♫

♫ Affection binds us, forever and ever ♫

♫ The evening breeze tells of my deep love ♫

♫ From now on, I have someone to cherish ♫

♫ With deep affection, you are the one for me ♫

♫ I share the autumn moon and spring breeze only with you ♫

♫ Your palm lines ♫

♫ Your gaze ♫

♫ Our love is deepening ♫

♫ With deep affection, you are the one for me ♫

♫ I share the autumn moon and spring breeze only with you ♫

♫ Your palm lines ♫

♫ Your gaze ♫

♫ Our love is deepening ♫

♫ You are the one for me ♫

♫ Embracing each other, how serious we are about our love ♫
