[Episode 19]

Shen Du.

Jing Lin, has the imperial physician not arrived yet?

Jing Lin has gone to summon the physician.

The rain outside is too heavy.

It must have been delayed.

This won't do.

If this continues, he will lose too much blood.

Housekeeper, prepare hot water and gauze.

Yes.

♫ May you also look up to see the brilliant stars and moon ♫

♫ No matter the endless rivers, until you came into my life ♫

♫ Rushed encounters in time, with shallow fates ♫

♫ The winter in warm memories ♫

These tools

are things I use when dealing with the dead.

But desperate times call for desperate measures.

Please bear with it.

♫ I have waited until time bloomed into flowers ♫

♫ The ice and snow slowly melting ♫

♫ I hear those gentle words ♫

♫ He said he loves her ♫

♫ The flower in the mirror, the moon in the water, present in my dreams ♫

♫ It's not the vain and false glamour ♫

♫ Why fear the flying sand on the road ahead ♫

♫ Chasing time, riding the white horse ♫

♫ Go together ♫

Why is he so hot?

Housekeeper, go have a look at where Jing Lin is.

Let me know once you find him.

Yes.

♫ The flower in the mirror, the moon in the water, present in my dreams ♫

♫ It's not the vain and false glamour ♫

♫ Why fear the flying sand on the road ahead ♫

♫ Chasing time, riding the white horse ♫

♫ Go together ♫

♫ Love is pure and flawless in essence ♫

You have saved me once again.

♫ Let's be together ♫

[Lai Luofu]

Tears are of no use.

Of no use at all.

Huo'e cannot die in vain.

Shen Du

will receive the punishment he deserves.

Huo'e

will eventually be resurrected.

[Cangming Hall]

Your Majesty.

Your Majesty.

Overnight, throughout Xiang'an City,

the news has spread.

They all say that Great Chief Shen

was stabbed in the street by Chen Huo'e

yesterday

and was critically injured beyond cure.

Vice Minister Lai

claimed quite confidently

that Chen Huo'e had been executed according to the law.

But a dignified court official

was unexpectedly wounded by someone already declared dead

right in front of the people.

This is more than just a flaw in the pursuit and trial of the criminal.

It's practically a slap in the face of our Dacang Dynasty.

Your Highness,

everyone knows Vice Minister Lai's

utmost loyalty to our Dacang.

The Imperial Inspectorate commands absolute obedience.

All this time it is

where the authority of Dacang resides.

Vice Minister Lai is the feared Black Fiend.

To enter the Imperial Inspectorate

is to comply without exception.

Now, Chen Huo'e

has escaped from the Imperial Inspectorate time and again.

It is hard not to doubt

Vice Minister Lai's role in this matter,

whether it is due to incompetence

or deliberate aggravation.

Your Majesty, I beg for your discernment.

Chen Huo'e indeed perished in custody of the Imperial Inspectorate

from torture interrogation.

The trial records and Chen Huo'e's confession and personal effects

have all been submitted.

But I have heard

though Chen Huo'e was beheaded,

she still possesses the ability to resurrect.

The people are spreading rumors

that one day Chen Huo'e

will return.

Nonsensical talk.

Madam Xu,

bring it out.

Great Chief of the Imperial Guards, Shen Du, respectfully reports.

I have captured Chen Huo'e.

She is a rare mirror image person.

She was apprehended and beheaded on the spot.

There is no longer a Chen Huo'e in this world.

Mirror image person?

Could this be

the secret of Chen Huo'e's

repeated escapes?

Vice Minister Lai, you personally conducted the interrogation.

Yet you failed to discover the anomaly of Chen Huo'e's mirror image.

I was negligent.

Were you negligent

or did you think

there was no need to report to me?

I wouldn't dare.

I would rather die a thousand deaths

than dare to conceal anything from Your Majesty.

It seems

the majesty of Dacang

needs a change.

Vice Minister Lai, you've let the criminal off the hook.

Although it was unintentional,

it was a crime of negligence.

Your salary will be docked for one year.

You should also do away

with that usual entourage of yours

when going out.

Thank Your Majesty for your mercy.

Madam Xu,

arrange for the best imperial physician

and the finest medicine

to ensure that Minister Shen makes a speedy recovery.

Yes.

Having made such a grave mistake,

he is merely docked a year's salary.

Mother Empress truly

shows favoritism towards Vice Minister Lai.

If Your Highness have an objection,

why didn't you bring it up in the court earlier?

Prime Minister Zhang, what do you mean?

Prime Minister Zhang.

Your Highness.

Chen Huo'e has committed heinous crimes.

Our Mother Empress made her own decision.

We'd better not to discuss it here.

Prince Xian makes a fair point.

I was rash.

It's just you who likes to play the good guy.

You've lost so much blood

and had a high fever last night.

You must wake up.

I haven't yet helped your Shen family overturn the case.

♫ Heart burnt once, a body lonesome and withered ♫

♫ A lifetime of solitude ♫

♫ Love once burned, where has it scattered ♫

♫ The mottles ♫

♫ Drifting in the mist ♫

Why have you come again?

If you're caught, you'll lose your life.

I promised to bring you

the kickball-shaped pastries from the West Market.

Although they got a bit squashed on the way here,

the taste should still be good.

Quick, have a taste.

♫ Love is elusive, stinging you and scorching me ♫

♫ Along the way, flowers bloom and fall, heavy rain pours ♫

♫ Lights will intertwine ♫

♫ You are my final destination ♫

♫ Who will guide me through loneliness and confusion ♫

♫ Understand my vulnerability. No need for words ♫

I don't have any money on me.

Let me give this to you.

I don't want your money.

Do you think I'm a servant delivering dishes?

No. I…

This whistle was given to me by my dad.

Look, there's the character "Shen" on it.

♫ Who will guide me through right and wrong ♫

I'll go first.

Otherwise, they'll come to catch me again.

♫ Who will guide me through grudges and karma ♫

♫ Soothe my sense of loss, never to escape ♫

Will you come back?

Of course.

Someday

I will overturn the case for the Shen family

and take you out with honor and integrity.

When you were in the detention center,

it was such a difficult situation

and you could get through it.

This time,

you can surely turn misfortune into fortune too.

So it really was you.

You will.

You will.

Great Chief Shen,

even if you are sick,

you must stay spirited.

Change into some fresh clothing.

Perhaps it could speed up the recovery.

Fortunately, it was you.

I've stitched up the wound.

He's lying here

just like any other corpse.

I've dissected so many male corpses.

Am I afraid to change his clothes?

He places this wicker piglet under his pillow

every night.

The handwriting on the letter is delicate and graceful.

It must come from the woman he can't forget.

Rest assured.

I won't cling to you.

You saved me.

I took care of you.

We are even now.

When the three months are up,

I will divorce you as promised.

Three months.

Divorce as promised?

What did I hear?

- Chuichui. - Liuniang.

How did you get here?

Such a big thing happened.

How could I not come?

After this morning's court session,

all Six Ministries are talking about it.

The White Ghost was fatally wounded by Chen Huo'e.

Is he going to pass away?

He is badly injured, but…

But what?

You're going to worry me to death.

Liuniang,

what exactly happened between you and White Ghost?

Nothing.

At this point, you still want to hide it from me?

You two are a fake couple?

Chuichui, you must keep this a secret for me.

I had no other choice.

Did Shen Du threaten you?

Most certainly.

Three months.

Then you could escape

from the White Ghost's lair?

That would be a good thing.

But,

in his current condition,

what if he won't wake up in three months?

It won't happen.

He will definitely wake up.

But what if he won't wake up?

Will you just keep guarding him like this?

He became like this trying to save me.

Yes, I know.

But you have to think for yourself.

In case,

he…

Will you just keep living like a widow for him?

Bah. What nonsense are you talking about?

- You say bah. - Bah.

Since the two of you are a fake couple,

no matter what happens to him,

you have to plan for yourself.

Just think,

when you return to the Yan Mansion in the future,

if you end up as a divorced woman,

your family's madame

along with your siblings,

will they still give you good days to live?

Wouldn't you and Lady Jin

be subjected every day to all kinds of disdain and exclusion?

I think it's better for you

to find another good man to remarry.

No, Chuichui,

what are you talking about?

The Ministry of Justice.

I think the Ministry of Justice seems to have no good men to remarry.

Jiang Langxing.

Why not consider Jiang Langxing?

Although Jiang Langxing

always

has a sour face

and behaves properly,

he truly is a good man.

At times, he's quite adorable. He is good.

You want to set me up with Jiang Langxing?

Isn't he good?

Alright. I'll think about it some more.

I've thought

of a more suitable candidate.

Marshal Inspector.

Although Marshal Xu

comes from humble origins,

he is tall and imposing

and has a generous character.

If you can't become

the lady of the Shen family,

being Marshal Inspector's wife

would also carry great prestige.

Mr. Xu is a good man,

but I have no personal feelings for him.

Chuichui, please don't keep playing matchmaker anymore.

Affection can be cultivated.

From Marshal Xu's appearance,

at first glance, he is

someone who would dote on his wife.

That's so much better.

That's better than being with the White Ghost

who annoys you all day long.

I am only injured,

not dead.

Shen Du.

You are awake.

Take it slow.

Lu Chuichui,

it's not your place to run to my mansion

and point fingers.

Get out!

Liuniang,

I'll wait for you outside.

You…

Slow down.

You…

When did you wake up?

Just now.

Just now?

You just

suddenly…

I just woke up all of a sudden.

- Thank you. - Thank you.

If it weren't for you,

I would have died at the hands of Chen Huo'e.

You got so seriously injured because of it.

It's Chen Huo'e who was wrong,

not you.

Weren't these injuries on me

treated by you?

Where's the body of Chen Huo'e?

At the time, you were injured.

Jing Lin and I rushed to bring you back.

The corpse of Chen Huo'e

was secretly taken away by someone.

Jing Lin went to investigate overnight

and speculated that it was someone from the Imperial Inspectorate

who took her corpse.

Lai Luozhi.

I'm thinking,

Chen Huo'e's previous disappearance

was a dereliction of duty by Lai Luozhi.

Now the people from the Imperial Inspectorate

have stolen Chen Huo'e's corpse.

I'm afraid there must be a scheme.

We might as well wait a bit.

Use stillness to control action.

Let's see what move they will make.

You should rest well first.

Housekeeper.

The Great Chief has already woken up.

Go quickly and ask the physician to take a look.

My Lord has awoken.

Thank goodness.

Quick, go call the physician.

Liuniang.

Chuichui.

You have finally come out.

You go manage these people of the Shen Mansion.

Mrs. Shen's good friend is here.

Not even providing me with a meal.

Miss Lu,

are you lacking silver?

You don't know.

The new plays at the Furong Garden

are really good.

The actor's performance is absolutely stunning.

I just

used my pocket money to tip them.

My father has cut off

my pocket money.

And this month's allowance hasn't been issued yet.

Well,

we are besties.

Just say whether you'll take care of the meal or not.

Mr. Shen.

Coming.

What's your order?

Please arrange for Chuichui and Miss Yun Que

to have their meals.

Prepare another meal box.

- I will take it to the main bedroom. - Alright.

Yan Liuniang,

we rarely get to have a meal together.

Won't you join me?

Shen Du is bedridden with injuries.

He just woke up and can't be left alone.

There are so many people in the Shen Mansion.

They won't miss one person.

Yun Que,

weren't you the one claiming that you would marry the White…?

Shen Du?

Shen Du was seriously injured.

You're not going to claim your merits.

Instead, you're here seeking tranquility.

I see through it.

You see through it?

She sees through it.

The White Ghost is not a good person?

Not a good match?

During this time, I have indeed seen one thing clearly.

Yan Xing,

your ambition lies not with being Mrs. Shen.

Why spend a lifetime at the Shen Mansion?

Well said.

You two are still in the Shen Mansion.

Keep your voices down.

Madam, the food you want is ready.

Servant!

At your service.

Carry out my orders.

Now that they have entered the game,

let's add

a bit more spice to it.

Right?

Let me tell you, he really is super handsome.

You're absolutely right.

In just the time it takes for a meal,

you two have become so intimate.

My meeting with Yun Que was very joyful.

As if we were old friends at first sight.

Close like sisters.

Chuichui and I both believe

that only women truly understand women.

Our fate should not be decided by others.

Exactly, we should find our own path forward.

Therefore, we have decided

to invite you to join us in three days

to seek marriage fate together at Mingsheng Temple.

Mingsheng Temple?

Praying for a marriage match?

You don't really want

to be Mrs. Shen for the rest of your life, do you?

Although I've lost interest in Shen Du,

could it be that you and Shen Du are really a harmonious couple?

The three-month agreement no longer counts?

Of course, it counts.

Then why are you hesitating?

You couldn't be

in love with the White Ghost, could you?

When the agreed time comes,

I will naturally leave him.

I am only focused on career and reputation.

I haven't thought about remarriage.

Marital fate and career success are not mutually exclusive.

Exactly.

Three days later, we'll go to Mingsheng Temple first

and pray for a marriage match.

It's settled then.

Oh right. In my room, there are freshly pickled fruits.

I don't feel like eating recently. Please go try some.

I want to eat them.

Let's go.

We're leaving. Don't miss me too much.

So much consideration.

Do you want me to choose for you?

What?

Do you want me to help you choose?

That's true.

You are seriously injured now.

It's really not proper for me to leave you and go out.

Later, I will

send those few dresses

to Chuichui

and let her choose for herself.

I won't be going after three days.

The dress is chosen for Lu Chuichui?

Right.

She has been staying at the Shen Mansion for the past few days.

It's a pity

that the colors of my dresses

are all not bright enough.

I'm afraid she won't like them.

Since you will go out with besties,

you don't have to worry about me.

The Shen Mansion is not without people to rely on.

As for three days from now,

I should be able to get out of bed by then.

I will join you at that time.

No need. You've suffered such a serious injury.

You need to rest a bit longer before you'll be okay.

You rest first, okay?

Isn't it just because I watched a couple of extra plays?

How did I fall asleep?

It must've been that

that play was just too captivating.

Then, I just…

It's fine.

Today really is

bright and sunny

with a clear sky as far as the eye can see.

Oh no.

Is it a human or a ghost?

It's a ghost.

What's there to fear about ghosts?

They were all people before they died.

You're not scared, but I am!

If it's a ghost, I'd be scared to death.

Every grievance has its perpetrator, every debt its debtor.

Whoever owes you, go find them.

I'm begging you, please go away.

I'm begging you, please go away.

Back at the cemetery,

how come I didn't notice

that you were such a scaredy-cat?

Oh, it's you!

Mr. Mask,

it's so strange.

I was so scared just a moment ago.

But as soon as you sit beside me,

suddenly this place seems

not so scary anymore.

Perhaps it's because

all the ghosts and ghouls here are afraid of me.

Why do you belittle yourself?

It's just a fact.

In this world,

not to mention people,

even all evil spirits and ghosts

fear to not escape me in time.

You're talking nonsense.

Why do you have to say something so scary?

You're clearly so good.

Look.

It's just like

in this void,

the invisible little fairies

all want to be your friends.

If you don't believe me, look.

Watch carefully.

Little fairy.

Would you like to be friends

with Mr. Mask?

If you're willing,

just jump from this bowl

into this bowl.

Is that okay?

You need Mr. Mask to personally invite you?

Mr. Mask, please extend an invitation to the little fairy.

Please join me, little fairy.

Look, the little fairy agreed.

The little fairy is willing to be friends with you

and play games with you.

You are the most likable.

Everyone will like you.

Alright, don't cry anymore.

You are the most likable.

Everyone will like you

and they must all like you.

Yes.

Little fairy,

since you are also a friend of Lu Chuichui,

can you do me a favor?

The little fairy agreed.

Well, got scared?

You

are really strange.

You're not afraid of the graveyard at night,

but you get scared so easily.

To say you're timid and scared of ghosts,

yet you're not scared of my mask.

What is there to fear in that graveyard?

Lying in that graveyard is my dearest

mother I've been longing to see.

And you,

you don't want to remove your mask

simply because of the birthmark on your face.

There's nothing to fear about that, either.

By the way, I found out

that it seems the golden ring

is not so effective

in removing birthmarks.

Maybe you shouldn't use it.

What if it ends up scratching your face?

Well?

Do you want to take back the golden ring?

You keep it.

If I can't remove the birthmark,

I'll never dare

to show my true face before you.

How can that be?

Having a birthmark is not your fault.

Whatever the appearance may be,

it should not affect the goodness inside a person.

I believe

a person's appearance

is just like

the ones for the roles in Chinese opera,

Sheng, Dan, Jing, and Mo.

It's just a part of the character.

So what do you think of my look?

Is it good or evil?

Is it loyal or treacherous?

When you are willing to take off the mask,

I'll tell you.

What if I take off the mask

and you don't wish to look?

What then?

Rest assured.

I gave you the golden ring

in the hope that you could remove the birthmark.

But whether or not you can remove it

is no longer important now

because I have long

treated you as a friend.

I definitely won't judge a book by its cover.

Take it off from me.

Then I'll do it.

Lai Luozhi.

Lu Chuichui, today,

I've presented my true self to you.

Whether you are frightened or not,

please keep my secret for me.

Do not disclose this matter

to a third party.

Remember what you promised me.

Don't go back on your word.

I trust you.

What are you thinking about?

Nothing. Look, Liuniang.

So many beauties and fair ladies, scholars and literati,

have come here to seek marital fate.

They are here.

What a coincidence!

You have also come to seek marital fate.

How come, only allowing female officials from the Ministry of Justice to come,

yet not allowing us inspectors to come?

Of course not.

I am just marveling

at this fate.

How it's so ingeniously arranged.

Isn't that right, Liuniang?

Stop talking. Let's go quickly.

Where to?

Didn't you say you were going to seek marital fate?

Seek…

Who would have thought, Jiang the stickler,

you would have this request too?

It's not apparent, Jiang the stickler.

Fine.

Considering your age,

wanting to find a beauty beyond the books

is only human nature.

Then I, Lu Chuichui, will

accompany you.

Liuniang, have a good chat with Marshal Xu.

I'll go and come right back.

Let's go.

You seldom come visit Mingsheng Temple, right?

Let's walk around together.

You guys go ahead. Don't mind me.

Shen Du.

You must drink this bowl of medicine.

Pray for a marriage match at Mingsheng Temple.

Jing Lin.

Great Chief.

[Mingsheng Temple]

Mr. Xu,

you must have something to say.

Liuniang,

the other day I overheard by chance

Lu Chuichui mention your marriage.

Isn't this a joke?

How can a woman propose a divorce?

Why can't she propose it?

Don't forget it.

According to Dacang's legal code,

if husband and wife

get a divorce due to incompatibility,

they shall not be punished.

Moreover,

they didn't have

the actual marital relationship.

They've agreed to divorce.

Anyway, I've long told her to make arrangements

and to find another good person.

It's just a pity. The inspectors

and those from the Ministry of Justice,

none of them are suitable

apart from Marshal Xu.

I have to tear

Lu Chuichui's mouth sooner or later.
