[Episode 14]

Great Chief.

What brings you here?

There are too many lanterns here.

Over here, put it here.

The Great Chief's residence is always like this?

The Shen Mansion is much brighter than this.

Great Chief, come on.

Mr. Han.

On such a night with a full moon,

do you also think of

your own family like I do?

I…

lost my parents at a young age.

I have had no family for a long time.

Once I marry Caiwei.

the Yan family will be my family.

Right.

Your parents have gone.

What about your siblings?

You must inform them

about your wedding, right?

Before getting married,

- the two families should meet. - Right.

No need.

I left home to study at a young age,

and I've long lost contact with relatives.

As long as Caiwei and I truly love each other,

that's enough.

I don't care about

those tedious formalities.

Really?

Why do I think that these tedious formalities

are necessary?

Even if you two truly love each other,

you would also hope to get

recognition and blessings from friends and family.

Moreover,

you'll get to know

both family backgrounds from this meeting,

so as not to be deceived.

Right.

When I married you,

we didn't have these formalities.

Mr. Han truly loves Caiwei.

That's what matters.

It's getting late,

and a bit chilly.

Well,

let's head back to rest.

Yes, let's go.

Right.

Great Chief, we're leaving.

Let's go.

Mr. Han.

If you really love her

so much,

then try to be sincere

and face the challenge together.

Mr. Han, let's go.

What do you want to do?

You insist on having a meal here,

and scare everyone away.

I don't want to tell you.

I shouldn't be the one to tell you.

What a bluff.

It's getting late.

Let's go back.

It's too late to get back.

- Then… - Great Chief.

Great Chief.

Master has already prepared a bedroom

for you two.

Since father

has already prepared a bedroom for me,

then I won't go back.

You can just go.

What are you doing?

What?

He has said the bedroom

is for the two of us.

If you stay,

then how are you going to explain this tomorrow?

If you're not leaving, at least put me down first.

It's not nice to be seen.

So what?

I just want others to see

how close we are.

So you'll be spared from explaining.

Wait.

Go back to rest.

Alright.

Now drop the play.

Time to sleep.

Yan Mansion is not like Shen Mansion.

Tonight, you'll just make do there.

I am someone with injuries.

Making me sleep on a bamboo chair

is inappropriate.

Who told you to…

You look even healthier than me.

Forget it.

You can have the bed.

If you want to stay,

there's still half a spot inside.

You can sleep on the inside.

If you don't want to,

you can go outside

and spend the whole night with the stars.

Today,

let's make do.

But we have to follow the rules.

No one is supposed to cross this blanket.

I can't sleep.

Might as well go outside and spend the night with the stars.

Why are you here?

I've given you the room.

The candles in the room have gone out.

It's too dark in the room for me to sleep.

Get someone to light the candles.

Shen Du.

You just have to bother others in the middle of the night, don't you?

You weren't asleep when the candles were lit.

You're tossing and turning, keeping me from sleeping.

Because candles weren't bright enough when they're lit,

it's still a bit dim.

You're a really weird guy.

My father even

lit a few more candles.

And you still complain about the darkness.

You're sleeping, not reading or writing.

Why do you need it to be as bright as day?

Are you blind or something?

Now I understand

why Shen Du is called White Ghost.

Just look at these.

In broad daylight, it's like a memorial hall.

When evening comes,

it is still as brightly lit as day.

Who beats someone up with a lantern in hand?

I can't do it without a lantern.

Does he

have night blindness?

Tonight is truly rare.

Look, those Canglong Seven Stars in the east,

and those Zhuque Seven Stars in the south,

are so bright.

Look over there.

Those four stars over there are connected,

do they look like the four corners of a square?

Those four over there

are Dituluo Stars.

There are four more below.

They are the Jiaomujiao Stars.

Indeed, he cannot see.

There are no stars over there at all.

You know so many

names of the stars.

You are really impressive.

Well, those over there.

What's the name of those stars over there

that look like a rabbit?

Biyuewu Stars.

What about this one over here?

I think this one looks like a glutinous rice cake.

And those in the south.

Those in the south

look like

a cherry.

It's called Jingmu'an Star.

It doesn't sound good. Change the name.

I think…

it should be called

Cherry Biluo Star.

The one next to it is

Glutinous Rice Cake Star.

It doesn't sound good.

Such strange names.

And they are all pastries.

I'm telling you.

It's nice to name them after food.

When I was little, I had a poor appetite.

So, my mother would name the stars in the sky

all after pastries.

She even tricked me by saying that whichever star was shining,

then I had to eat more of that kind of pastry.

Otherwise, that star

would never shine again.

Today, you must eat more glutinous rice cakes.

Because today,

the star that looks like a glutinous rice cake is shining.

My mother said,

if not, then

the star that looks like a glutinous rice cake

will go out.

Eat up.

Great Chief.

What's the matter?

Early in the morning, Mr. Han

went to find Master,

saying to announce something.

He asked me to invite you and Madam.

Okay.

We're on our way.

- Great Chief. - Save it.

Great Chief, you are here.

Thank you for giving me the chance to confess.

Mr. Han.

What exactly do you want to say?

Caiwei.

I lied to you.

My parents still have a son alive.

He is the Empress Dowager's favored official,

Zhang Baohuan, the Minister of Rites.

Mr. Zhang?

But I don't understand.

Since you are Mr. Zhang's brother,

why didn't he use his connections to protect you

from persecution by Princess of Valor?

Brother…

In fact, Princess of Valor knew

about my relationship with Zhang Baohuan.

That's why she wanted

to take me in

as one of her gigolos.

I rejected her many times,

but still found it hard to escape.

Though we are born of the same mother,

he does not deserve to be my elder brother

because he failed to protect our sister.

Sister?

The owner of Jinxiu Workshop back then

was your sister, Zhang Baoying?

Caiwei, I'm sorry.

I lied to you.

When the incident at Jinxiu Workshop occurred,

the Zhang family was executed to the last.

Yet Zhang Baohuan used his connections

to save me.

I can't figure out

why he can't keep our sister

if he can keep me.

I hate that he didn't protect our sister,

and hate myself for being incompetent.

Since then, I made up my mind

to have nothing to do with the Zhang family anymore.

My mother's surname is Han,

so I took her surname

and renamed to Han Shiyuan.

Maybe he had a compelling reason too.

You should know

how difficult life he is living

by the side of the Empress Dowager.

Serving the emperor is at risk.

I think

you should understand it.

You've never seen how bloody that scene was.

How can you truly empathize with me?

[Zhang Baoying] Don't be afraid.

I will never forget that day.

If you were me,

you wouldn't be able to say such words.

You are wrong.

They died uncleared of a false charge,

so you should try your best

to seek justice for them,

instead of lying to yourself

and distancing yourself from them.

What a twisted fate!

What a twisted fate!

Mr. Han.

Please allow me to consider

the marriage between you and my daughter.

Please don't mind.

The Yan Mansion is not strong,

truly cannot withstand any more turmoil.

Today, I tell you the truth.

And I'm well aware of the consequences.

I did not sleep all night.

I realized I couldn't lie to Caiwei

and marry her.

Staying here these days

has bothered you a lot.

I

take my leave.

Mr. Han.

Caiwei.

Caiwei.

Mr. Han

Is indeed Mr. Zhang's

family.

The Jinxiu Workshop case

involves the royal past

and the close servant of the Empress Dowager,

having extensive connections.

Be cautious.

Understood, I will be careful.

Actually, there is one more thing.

Back then, in the detention center,

there's a little girl

who often came to see me at midnight,

bringing me food and news from the outside.

But since one day,

I've never seen her again.

I thought I'd never see her again.

But yesterday,

I seemed to have found her.

Or perhaps,

someone just like her.

Many years ago,

you asked me

to check the detention center's entry and exit records

to find her, right?

But in the records,

there was no entry of a little girl.

So I couldn't help but wonder

whether she was real

or merely a figure in my dreams.

If she did come and go at night,

then might not be recorded.

That detention center

was also where I was confined in my youth.

Thinking back now,

I still often have nightmares.

She dared to

go into the detention center at night to care for you.

She must be a kind-hearted woman.

If fate brings you together again,

make sure to tell her this and treat her well.

If fate indeed brings us together again,

there's no need to tell her this.

As I am now the well-known

ruthless official in Dacang,

being so ruthless

and with a vicious dog that bites people.

I'm too ashamed to face

my childhood playmate again.

A vicious dog that bites people?

You're talking about that time at the Ming Hall?

If you hadn't let out the vicious dog

to screen criminals,

I'm afraid that everyone below

would have perished under arrows.

Madam Xu, you have been living in the palace,

yet known everything.

Even the affairs outside the palace.

Don't flatter me so.

Everyone in Xiang'an City

knows this.

This became another tally under your reputation

as White Ghost.

Shen Du.

Bearing such a notorious name,

do you think it is worth it?

Yan Xing.

You overstepped your authority again!

And yet you still deny it?

This is the encrypted file

sent by the Imperial Guards,

designated for you to read only.

Originally,

cases from the Imperial Guards

were to be assigned to you.

However, by law, they must be archived first

and then assigned from the top down.

There's no reason to go over me and straight into your hands.

Regarding this matter, you must…

remind the Imperial Guards.

Alright, Director Wu.

I will tell them

all the files and evidence

that are sent over

must be reviewed and assigned by you.

That's more like it.

What is this?

Is this a code using landmarks?

Jushengnu Stars?

[Glutinous Rice Cake Star]

Glutinous Rice Cake Star.

Cherry…

This must be the work of my husband,

who has recently taken an interest

in astronomy.

While observing,

he has drawn maps of the stars

and presented them to the Ministry of Justice

for use in our investigations.

Nonsense.

Are these things of any use to us? Any at all?

This is the Ministry of Justice, not the Astronomical Bureau.

Nonsense.

Do they think that we are idle?

Without eating pastries,

you can still retain a sky full of stars.

He has remembered

all the positions and names I spouted last night.

Shen Du.

I will find a way to cure your night blindness.

[Ocean Fall]

One can see things during the day.

When twilight falls, one can't see anything.

It is called Night Blindness.

Suggest nourishing the liver and replenishing blood.

Did Madam ask to prepare the offal

to make three meals a day for Master?

Are you cooking?

You look like doing a witchcraft to me.

What are you all gathered around here for?

Dismissed, everyone.

Don't you have things to do?

Pipewort.

You go busy.

Alright.

Hurry. Come with me.

Faeces Vespertilionum.

My lord.

This is what Madam cooked for you,

sheep liver soup.

Great Chief.

Madam said,

at noon, you have to have this

steamed Pipewort, Faeces Vespertilionum and chicken liver.

Again?

Again and again?

I'm not eating.

I know why you keep the lanterns lit at night.

If you wish to see the starry sky,

you must eat all three meals a day.

If you do not,

read the second note.

If you don't want the entire Xiang'an City to know

your secret,

then do what I told you to.

What did you just say this thing is called?

Steamed Pipewort, Faeces Vespertilionum and chicken liver.

I know what Pipewort is.

But what is

the Faeces Vespertilionum?

Great Chief.

Are you sure you want me to tell you?

What exactly is it?

Bat droppings.

Yan…

Liu…

Yan Liuniang!

Great Chief.

Let's not eat it then.

You go to the Ministry of Justice

and bring her here.

[Chief's Office]

Madam, be careful.

Great Chief was in a bad mood after eating the chicken liver.

I'm going to watch the training.

What are you looking at?

And you.

Yan Liuniang.

If you want to kill me,

just stab me with a sword.

Why beat around the bush?

Making these nauseating soups.

Shen Du, I'm doing it for you.

This is the recipe I've found

in medical books.

It's written

that for those with night blindness should take

substances that nourish the liver and the eyes.

Such as animal offal, and…

It's not just animal offal,

but also animal droppings.

What?

Are you talking about

Faeces Vespertilionum?

That

steamed Pipewort, Faeces Vespertilionum and chicken liver

is

recorded in the Treatise on the Origins of Various Diseases.

Faeces Vespertilionum

is one of the most important materials.

Mr. Shen bought it after going through

all the city's drugstores.

And I've steamed it all night.

I'm doing all this for you.

Don't ever do it again.

It's good for you.

Venting like this

doesn't make any sense.

I…

If you have nothing important to say, I'll go back to my department.

Chen Shoujie has been recuperating at the medical hall these past few days,

sometimes lucid, sometimes dull.

I have already brought him to the Imperial Guards.

If you want to question him, come with me.

Mr. Chen, can you tell me

what exactly happened?

Why are there Jinxiu Workshop's works in your house?

She's my concubine.

Previously at Jinxiu Workshop,

she also worked as an embroideress

and even had apprentices.

Her craftsmanship is truly exquisite.

When Jinxiu Workshop got involved in a case,

she just happened to be out.

Afterwards, the imperial court searched for the remaining party,

and she was hiding everywhere

and met me.

I appreciated her merits,

so I took her in as a concubine.

She made

these embroidery works

in her leisure time.

Fire!

Fire!

I don't think

we can get any clue from him.

So Mrs. Chen

was once an embroideress at the Jinxiu Workshop.

So the murderer

wanted to eliminate all those

related to the Jinxiu Workshop case?

If that's the case,

does it mean that

the Jinxiu Workshop case

has a big secret?

A secret that the murderer would kill people

to keep it quiet.

But right now it's all speculation.

We have no evidence.

Indeed.

Further investigation is required.

And it should be a targeted investigation.

I have decided

to write an application today

and submit it to the Ministry of Justice tomorrow,

to apply for a combined investigation

of the Chen Huo'e case and

the Jinxiu Workshop case.

I'm afraid it will be difficult.

These two cases involve too many people.

None of them want the old cases to be brought up again,

so they will do everything they can

to obstruct the investigation.

But if we don't try,

we'll never know the results.

What's going on?

The people from Princess of Valor's mansion are making things difficult for Han Shiyuan

and blocking our way.

Mr. Han, Princess of Valor invites you to come.

Wait.

Don't act rashly.

Jing Lin, go find Zhang Baohuan.

Yes.
