[Episode 2]

[Shen Mansion]

My lord.

Empress Dowager bestowed you the marriage.

Should we make some preparation?

Mr. Zhong, you don't take any action.

With me here,

she won't be able to enter the mansion.

It's that trick of yours again?

To throw human head and darts

to scare her away.

This time it's the Empress Dowager who bestowed the marriage.

Could it be…?

So what?

As always, we'll scare her away.

Prime Minister Zhang, well…

Alright.

Stop it.

Just do as I said.

Mr. Yan.

You are wise.

I believe you won't

let me down.

Rest assured, Prime Minister Zhang.

Shut the gate.

Honey.

Prime Minister Zhang has come in person.

What's the matter?

Shen Du in the imperial court

never involves himself in factions.

Especially in the competition between Prince Xian and Princess of Valor,

he's been always neutral.

Prime Minister Zhang is the Prince Xian's strategist.

Sanniang was chosen this time,

surely not just for her talents.

Does he want Caiwei to be a spy?

Keep your voice down.

No way. I can't let Caiwei marry to him.

Just now, Prime Minister Zhang mentioned to me again

about the matter of the Six Ministries' reselection.

If Sanniang does not marry,

I will be sent to defend the frontier desert in the official selection.

And our whole family must move.

Prime Minister Zhang threatened father with exile of the whole family to the desert.

Master, Madam, something's wrong.

Sanniang has run away,

said to elope with a scholar named Han Shiyuan.

[Hoping father approves of us to be together.]

- What a rebellious girl! - Master.

- Honey - Father.

- Master. - Honey

Father.

Why are all of you looking at me?

Have you found Sanniang?

If not, hurry up and go look for her.

Even it means to go through Xiang'an,

you must find my disobedient girl and bring her back to me.

Go look for her carefully.

Hurry up.

Wait.

Keep it a secret.

Don't let others know

Sanniang is missing.

Right. Don't let anyone know Sanniang is missing.

Just say

that Liuniang's rabbit is lost.

Yes.

Liuniang.

You often move around outside,

so are quite familiar with the area.

And you have a good relationship with Caiwei.

Go look for her together.

Okay.

Then I'll go to look for the rabbit.

Okay.

Yan Liuniang.

Are you ladies of the Yan family not allowed to go home?

Why are you hanging out all day?

Great Chief, please move.

My rabbit is lost.

I need to go look for it.

Really?

So your rabbit is lost.

The gate of Yan Mansion

has been shut all day today.

I thought you were busily preparing for the wedding.

So you were just looking for a rabbit.

Great Chief, if you finish talking,

I will keep looking for it.

I wish you could find it.

Tomorrow is the wedding

between me and your third sister.

At that time,

I am very much looking forward to seeing you

coming to the wedding with the rabbit.

Great Chief.

May I ask you

a favor?

Ask me a favor?

Except for the prisoners in the cell who want to die,

in the entire Dacang,

I'm afraid there's no other one

who wants to ask me for a favor.

Great Chief, please break the engagement with my third sister.

Do you know what you're saying?

Yes.

Great Chief.

Please cancel the engagement with my third sister.

Although you have no official rank,

at least you're a literate clerk.

Don't you know

what it means?

The Empress Dowager bestowed this wedding.

There's no way to cancel it.

The Empress Dowager

values you much,

so she wants to give you

a good match.

Yes.

The Empress Dowager has meticulously selected,

and Prime Minister Zhang has guaranteed it.

I believe I will be a good match

with your third sister.

That's the Empress Dowager

not knowing what the ladies

of the Yan family are like.

Seeing how rude and disrespectful I am,

you should know

my third sister and you

will definitely not be a good match.

Are you saying

your third sister's talents are all fake?

Deceiving the world to steal fame

is a crime against the sovereign.

I…

I'm talking about me.

You indeed are rude and disrespectful.

But I'm not marrying you.

It's a pity

that your third sister

has such a rude and disrespectful sister like you.

But you've never met my third sister.

Aren't you afraid

that the two of you

will not fall in love?

So what?

What?

One should always be with the one he loves.

Treating each other with mutual respect

and valuing each other.

This is what makes a lifetime happy.

It doesn't matter.

You…

You are so silly

and unreasonable.

How dare you!

Shen Du.

Even if I don't want to believe

the rumors from outside,

but look at you now.

You are talking mean,

acting outrageous,

being ruthless

and unreasonable.

Even if my third sister doesn't have a crush,

she would never marry you.

Treating each other with mutual respect

and valuing each other.

These things

are already far from me now.

Mother.

Someday,

[Bi Luo] I will move you to the noblest cemetery

in the world,

where you will be worshipped.

Master.

Everything is ready.

Great Chief.

Although Yan Liuniang

doesn't speak nicely,

don't you also wish to cancel this engagement?

Since we haven't scared them away yet,

and they are already asking for a cancel,

why don't we just go with the flow?

Of course this wedding can't be completed.

But I shouldn't

be the one to cancel it.

Right, right.

Empress Dowager bestowed you the marriage,

so you naturally should be grateful.

Still, the Yan family must be the one to cancel the engagement.

According to the scouts,

Sanniang of the Yan family has eloped with that scholar,

yet, has not been found.

Even if they don't cancel the engagement,

then tomorrow's bridal pickup

is naturally canceled, right?

They are in the wrong,

and to the Empress Dowager,

Prime Minister Zhang will naturally have to find a way

to smooth things over.

How can we only watch half of a play?

Where the bride is, that's the Yan family's business.

Tomorrow morning, I will naturally send a team to pick up the bride.

[Yan Mansion]

[Awaiting Punishment from the Empress Dowager]

Everyone.

You have been working in Yan Mansion for years.

Now that we have encountered such a disaster,

I'm afraid the heaven wants to doom our Yan family.

I have prepared some money for you,

so you could find a new place to settle.

I have already finished the will.

Mother.

I don't want to die yet, mother.

Mother.

Mother.

- Mother. - Alright.

I'll be the bride.

What time is it already?

Why hasn't the bride come out yet?

We're going to miss the auspicious time!

♫ May you also look up to see the brilliant stars and moon ♫

♫ No matter the endless rivers, until you came into my life ♫

♫ Rushed encounters in time, with shallow fates ♫

Liuniang.

Liuniang, no way!

Liuniang.

This won't work out.

Think about that White Ghost.

He's someone in the Shen Mansion who crawled out from a pile of dead bodies.

Could you live a good life after marrying him?

Run. Take this.

You know people in the Ministry of Justice.

When the time comes, find a place

to hide for three months.

Return home after this period passes.

Don't worry about me.

Your father is just a paper tiger,

can't do anything bad to me.

At worst,

I'll serve him well

for the rest of my life.

If it really doesn't work out,

you can just

divorce me.

I'll go to

sing opera again. I could support the two of us.

Mother.

Which troupe

would take in an elderly actress like you?

Although I am a concubine's daughter,

under your protection since childhood,

I have not suffered much.

My third sister has been nice to me.

I was unwilling to practice the female arts of needlework,

eager to apply for the position as a female official.

It was my third sister who knelt for an entire night in the ancestral hall for me.

You!

You just remember the good in others.

I am part of the Yan family,

naturally, I can't watch the Yan family suffer.

My third sister doesn't wish to marry,

because she has Mr. Han in her heart.

I have no one in my heart.

So I shall marry on her behalf.

Silly girl.

It is not that simple.

Mother, don't worry.

I have seen many dead

at the Ministry of Justice

Even the White Ghost

couldn't scare me.

Besides, he's still a human.

He could never take me to the underworld.

Alright.

Father.

Mother.

Please take good care of my mother for me.

I

am leaving.

[Yan Mansion]

Pick up the bride.

Great Chief.

Before the wedding ceremony,

the bride and groom should not meet.

The bride dropping the bridal sedan chair halfway would bring bad luck.

Moreover, as the groom,

you haven't even changed into your wedding attire.

Enough. We'll follow

the Imperial Guards' rules.

The Great Chief decides what to do.

Well…

My wife.

Let me see

the virtuous lady

of the Yan family

who has learned a lot.

This virtuous lady

is me.

Great Chief, are you going

to kill your wife in public?

Don't forget

this marriage is bestowed by the Empress Dowager.

Although I don't have any official rank,

and I am not an official,

at the very least, I am a clerk in the Ministry of Justice.

This is not a crime scene,

nor is there a suspect holding anyone hostage.

Even if you are the Great Chief,

you cannot just

kill an innocent clerk.

Really?

Since when

could a fly be a clerk?

You don't need to humiliate me like this.

Since you're so upset about this marriage,

why don't you kill me now?

Don't rush.

This sword today

hasn't chopped your neck,

but very soon,

it will leave you with no way out.

Yan Liuniang is really bold,

daring to marry for her third sister.

This is a crime against the sovereign.

The Empress Dowager only said to bestow a marriage to a lady from the Yan family.

The Empress Dowager

doesn't care which lady at all.

But you…

I care even less.

Sooner or later to get her away.

The Yan family doesn't have

many interesting rabbits.

A bold one is intriguing.

It's rare

that she is not only bold,

but also smart.

Liuniang.

Liuniang.

Liuniang.

Chuichui.

Liuniang.

It is really you.

I heard that your third sister was to marry today

and wanted to find you to join in the excitement.

But upon arriving at the Yan Mansion,

I saw Lady Jin crying at the gate,

saying that it was you who was to be married.

Liuniang, do you want it?

But the groom

is Shen Du.

He's no longer Shen Du,

but the cruel and ruthless White Ghost.

Chuichui, don't worry and go back.

No way.

How can I just watch you

falling into the hands of White Ghost?

I'll go with you.

I will be with you.

Terrible.

What's wrong? Take your time.

The bride has arrived.

[Butler of the Shen Mansion, Shen Zhong]

Bride?

What's the special family rule?

The Shen Mansion is made to look like a mourning hall.

It doesn't look like it's going to have a wedding at all.

There are so many white lanterns.

Madam, upon your first arrival at the Shen Mansion,

the servants would never dare to neglect you.

This wedding

is all about the right timing, location, and people.

A few days ago,

we invited someone

to tell the fortunes of you two.

So today,

it is not suitable for wedding celebrations.

It's okay.

As you please.

Please.

Because the Great Chief lives alone for years,

the main chamber

lacks the air of auspiciousness,

so is not suitable as a bridal chamber.

It could easily lead to disaster.

A new room has been specially prepared for you.

You should rest early

and wait for the Great Chief to return.

Ridiculous.

It's okay.

Please lead the way.

Please.

Mr. Shen.

I wonder if you remember

what my birthdate is.

Well…

I know you don't want

to say my birthdate in public.

Thank you for your consideration.

Please.

Chuichui, have some preserved fruit.

Are you still in the mood to eat?

Madam, wish you two have a child soon.

Spread it now?

Did you never even consider that Liuniang would marry into the family?

Chuichui.

Don't make it difficult for them.

They're being ridiculous.

They probably thought

I might run off halfway.

But this is so absurd.

It's nothing.

Just some courtesy.

Empty courtesy?

Your family has suffered loss.

I've heard

that what Shen Du sent to your family

were all just for show,

none of them was valuable.

Well…

You might as well marry into an ordinary family.

At least that would be sincere.

People would value much on their weddings,

but you got nothing.

And you can still smile now?

Since he doesn't want to marry,

then I insist on getting married.

[Three]

Great Chief, terrible!

There's news from the Imperial Guards up ahead.

That bride is simply outrageous.

Not only did she not leave, she actually came.

She should already be at the Shen Mansion now.

I knew it.

The key is, no one thought this wedding would actually happen,

so nothing was prepared.

But she went to the venue to set up

and offer suggestions.

Let her be.

Previously, there were many ladies

who wanted to marry into the Shen Mansion.

But with some tricks,

they ran away in an instant.

No one who has seen your sword would dare enter the bridal chamber.

After entering the mansion, Mr. Shen deliberately withheld her dowry.

She not only wasn't angry, but still wanted to marry.

This woman is well-trained,

and rises to the challenge.

Prime Minister Zhang sending her here is definitely a big conspiracy.

[Six]

Even you can tell,

then it's not a conspiracy at all.

This rabbit,

compared to those in the past,

is indeed much more intriguing.

The matchmaker…

Great Chief, rest assured.

I have already given a heads-up

to the bridal pickup team.

Now everyone only thinks

that you are successfully marrying

and the wedding is completed perfectly.

Now I understand

why Shen Du is known as White Ghost.

Just look at these.

In broad daylight, it's like a memorial hall.

When evening comes,

it is still as brightly lit as day.

Could it be to illuminate the underworld

to guide the ghosts?

Perhaps he's afraid of

ghosts knocking at midnight.

Liuniang.

Now,

do you really hate White Ghost?

I was silly in my youth,

thinking he was a nice guy.

But after these past days,

I've seen through him now.

Then he said those words when he stopped the sedan…

I think he didn't want me to enter the mansion,

so he wanted to scare me away.

Then what will you do?

Don't worry.

After all, it's a marriage bestowed by the Empress Dowager.

He won't lay a hand on me

that soon.

I would be careful and cautious,

keeping holding on.

I must hold on until

the court decides on the personnel for external appointments,

so my family won't be exiled to the frontier.

This is not a marriage.

You are entering a den of demons.

Seeking life in the underworld

is not that easy.

It's getting late, you should head back.

Or your father would be anxious.

I won't go. I want to stay here with you.

Can you come to stay with me every day?

I can't get you involved.

Rest assured.

Tonight he will certainly put on an air

of neglecting and disdaining me.

So he won't enter my room.

What are you doing here?

This is the Shen Mansion.

And tonight is my wedding night.

Why couldn't I come?

But you…

As the lady of the Yan family,

you are praised

for your talents,

with knowledge

of the past and present.

Your reputation as a virtuous lady

is known throughout the Xiang'an.

I wonder

if what I mentioned is you.

Yes.

Of course, the Empress Dowager

thought

I am extremely well-matched with you.

Otherwise, why would she bestow a marriage?

Great Chief, if you are dissatisfied with me,

then just divorce me.

What you thought

is just like what you look like.

Naive.

What a pretty lady you are.

I would definitely cherish you,

why could I divorce you?

I have never seen a bride

running around before the wedding ceremony.

If you don't want to

get injured

in the Shen Mansion,

then behave.

You are right.

Honey.

Now that I have married you,

I must naturally

do whatever I should well,

to serve you

well.

Do you

want to flirt to me?

Since you say to serve me well,

then let me tell you three things.

First,

don't try to be

the real Mrs. Shen.

Between you and me,

we are in name only.

Second,

don't expect any information

from me.

I know what Prime Minister Zhang

sent you for.

Third,

you are not the wife I want to marry,

don't try to survive in the Shen Mansion.

My lord.

Have you seen Madam?

About the wedding ceremony…

Let's regard it as completed.

Well…

The west wing room…

Just let her stay there.

Great Chief.

The Ming Hall is on fire.

Great Chief.

Why did the Ming Hall catch fire?

Someone set himself on fire in the Ming Hall,

resulting in a fire.

The guy set himself on fire has been burned beyond recognition.

Send more men

to ensure the safety of the palace.

Find out who that guy is.

Nothing can be left out.

Yes.

Why don't you let me see her?

I am the female official of the Ministry of Justice.

I came here with her yesterday.

We cannot let you in, Miss.

- Without the permission of Mr. Shen, - Please.

we cannot let you in.

Yes.

- Chuichui. - You can't get in.

Liuniang, terrible!

- Madam. - Madam.

In the bamboo forest of Ximing Temple,

a couple of bodies was found nearby.

The bodies look so weird.

The Ministry of Justice and the inspector have already sent people there.

- Let's go. - Let's go.
