So one of the trends that we're

totally obsessed with this

fall--who isn't--is the revival

of the sophisticated '70s.

>> Holy crap.

We just had a similar '70s

challenge, and it was a total

disaster.

>> Some of the iconic pieces

from that era that we love are

like big booming, wide-leg

trousers and little, silky,

you know, tie-front blouses.

>> A color palette that is

earthy.

Burgundies and browns and

mustards.

>> The polyester maxi dresses

and plaid--lots of plaid.

>> I'm picturing this empowered,

confident, sophisticated woman

like strong and feminine.

>> To help you, there is

a dossier of fashion from

the '70s on your HP Touchsmart

desktop.

For this look, you will be

creating sophisticated '70s

inspired--not vintage,

not retro.

We all know what happened with

the last challenge.

Too literal.

>> I really feel like it's

a second change for me to show

the judges that I can do

the sophisticated '70s and not

the Pocahontas version of it.

I'd say a larger scale resonates

better with the two-dimensional

My look's gonna be really '70s

blast from the past.

Billowy top with the long dirndl

skirt, which is the only skirt

women wore in the '70s.

And I'm opening it up in the

front, and the newness is gonna

have this little hot pant

underneath it.

>> I don't know an insane

amount about the '70s.

I never lived in that time,

so I'm really grasping for

design ideas.

>> My inspiration is my mom.

I have a picture of her from

the '70s, and she was

a secretary back then.

So I'm doing a sexy secretary

kind of look.

>> I was thinking of making

a really cool, fitted, tailored

jacket.

A little bit of like yves

Saint Laurent safari type of

thing.

I just kinda make it a little

bit more modern.

>> I'm really inspired by what

someone would wear in the '70s

to holiday in Jamaica.

It's super sexy.

There this ease to it.

That's exactly the kind of

feeling that I want to capture.

Um, so I'm gonna have a huge

slit in the front.

So my '70s-inspired look is

going to be a maxi skirt with

a very fitted top.

I am a '70s glam kind of girl.

A lot of different things that

I wear is '70s.

So this is totally me.

I like to mix prints.

I love the layering look.

And I really am happy about

this challenge because I feel

like I can really show who I am

I'm like...

Inspired by the sophisticated

'70s, but it's 2011, 2012.

This is Runway, so you need

wow and pizzazz.

At the same time, this needs

to go into production.

You have until 10:00 tonight,

and you have tomorrow, all

right?

All right, thank you.

>> You know you're good and I

feel like this is something

where you can do something

great.

>> It's a challenge where they

wanna see something dynamic

and fashion-forward.

Muslin is not any of those

things.

It's like cornflakes.

It tastes bland and really to

make it work takes magic.

So in this moment, like, I can't

imagine where that magic dust

is coming from.

>> Oh, my goodness.

How insane are these?

>> Bert, are these

'70s-inspired?

What am I like the history buff

all of a sudden?

>> Yes.

>> The History Channel.

>> These definitely are.

>> Yeah, those are.

I think I have a small advantage

over some of the other

designers.

Not so much because I lived this

time, but because of my

experience.

I have done this sort of

marketing before.

It was for a Halston catalog.

>> These?

>> Yeah, 'cause that's very

Rudolph Nureyev.

You all do know who Rudolph

Nureyev was.

>> Of course.

>> Look at those sequins.

You're going for it there.

>> I've got an idea.

The look I've chosen--it's a lot

of color.

When you're doing this type of

merchandise, you need to design

something that really catches

the consumer's eye.

It's gotta have something that

pops.

Tim's gonna say, "Bert, I said

'sophisticated.'"

From Woodstock to the hippie

movement, there's just a really

type of ease from the '70s,

which is what I really like.

What were the armholes like?

I don't wanna get too easy,

'cause I really need to make it

modern in my own way.

>> What kind of top are you

doing?

>> Some type of blazer.

>> Oh, you are gonna do

a blazer.

>> Yeah.

I'm a little nervous because

the '70s that I'm familiar with

is definitely the glam, disco

'70s.

This color--like I love this.

And I could definitely go there

very easily, but I think the

challenge for me is to create

something marketable and can be

sold on Piperlime.

I'm lost right now.

I really--I think I'm gonna

really want this outfit.

I am really excited about this

challenge.

I wear vintage all the time.

I'm wearing vintage right now.

I'm just gonna tell Meghan she

doesn't need to come.

I'm just gonna fit it to myself.

I didn't even see your fabrics.

What'd you get?

Oh, these?

Oh, love.

I think he's kinda squeezing

everybody else's ideas into his

work.

that is to use dye.

So I begin doing all these

different techniques, which I

don't even know what I'm doing.

So it's a little bit too

chocolate here, but I think

that's more what I want.

Using prints is always a risk.

People could love a print,

somebody could hate a print.

There could be memory tied with

a print that reminds them of

this or that, you know?

Print are so subjective.

Think about this like skin-tight

on my girl with her boobies.

the boobies, but--

>> Yea-ah.

What is Kim doing?

>> Oh, my God.

>> Those are from JC Penney.

The fabric that Kim has chosen

for this challenge is not

current.

There's nothing that's really

popping about it.

see something of our work

shortening it.

For my second piece, I've been

thinking about making a maxi,

'cause I just like what a maxi

bit shorter in the front,

so I was thinking about doing it

with a mini so just see just

a smidgeon of skin here.

midriff, for me that is the sex

element.

The circle top is flattering

because it's just loose and

flowy.

Every woman looks good in a

pencil skirt, so that works.

I love it, so I'm pretty

satisfied.

The jumper, I think, is fresh

and modern.

It's the vest and the pant

together, so I think that's

a very fresh, new idea.

I think it's great.

>> I am loving what I've done

with the first look.

It's three pieces, they're very

interchangeable.

It is casual, but it looks like

the trendy girl walking down

the street anywhere.

My second look, for Carla,

wasn't necessarily my favorite,

but I actually didn't mind it.

It was definitely more of that

dressier look, but on a casual

end.

So I felt good about the way

they look and the overall vibe

that they're giving.

walk down the runway.

She looks amazing.

They look young and fresh.

It's beautiful.

And they look great on her.

It looks perfect.

But it's a lot more skin than

I expected to see.

The second look, which is for

Kerstin, she looks great in this

dress.

Had a very Grecian look to it.

It looks absolutely awesome on

her.

It looks cute and young in

today, but also very reminiscent

of the '70s.

>> I am completely excited.

I'm proud of the chevron top

because I mitered all the

chevrons together.

And the top and skirt fit

Meghan beautifully.

It's very vibrant and it's got

a little bit of the '70s to it

but modern.

Hannah has never looked better.

The gold necklace that I've

chosen for the black jumper

definitely finishes off and

both of my looks are beautiful,

they're current.

Any girl would want to wear them

and they're still reminiscent

of the '70s.

>> I love what Sonia is wearing.

It's a very masculine look.

It's a tailored pant with

a men's tuxedo shirt.

It's kind of oversized, but it

has a great high fashion feel

to it and sex appeal to it.

My second look--it's a really

beautiful sexy dress.

I think it's quite strong,

and it corresponds to the '70s

because of the length.

I'm confident at the moment

that I've done my best, so I'm

really, really, really happy.

>> The first look is the one

that's made for $11 and

considering that, it's okay.

But the pants are too short,

and it looks unfinished,

and the color that I dyed them

is like so-so.

The second look, I think, looks

gorgeous.

I'm really, really, really happy

with it.

It's a very '70s-inspired, but

with a sleek, modern edge to it

so that it's current but still

referencing this era.

The jacket looks very well done

I just wish I could've seen

but I just made it more modern.

so I wanted a really easy knit

to make a full maxi skirt

that was just wearable and that

also read well online.

And then I wanted to do

something really graphic on top

so I made these chevrons.

The second look, just made this

really easy, wearable jumper

that I thought would flatter

a lot of silhouettes.

>> The black pant and the top,

I thought that that was quite

nice.

I just don't really love those

two prints together.

They don't look good in my eye.

>> The top looks like she's

wearing a prison uniform,

and then this long, flowery,

weird print--I don't understand

how you got to this.

Now, you're other look, you have

the problem that if I were

shopping online, this probably

won't read as anything.

>> I definitely agree with the

both of you about the print.

I don't think that either one of

the prints go together at all.

The maxi skirt you can find

anywhere.

And then the top, I can

appreciate you trying to do

something different in the back,

but again, it just does not

work.

>> When I was a kid, I used to

own a safari jacket from the

So I kinda wanted to make

something like that, but just

a little more modern.

So I started with this fabric

and this jacket, and I love the

fabric--the print--so much that

I extended that fabric into a

T-shirt.

I wish that the suit, though,

was a little sexier.

sex that tailoring in the '70s

would've had.

It's almost making her look

a little career matron.

is one of the worst outfits

I have seen in a long time.

There are just so many things

going on in this look, that it's

just really sore to the eyes.

I just don't understand how you

can put all these things in one

outfit.

It's the idea that this could be

on a runway and be sold right

off of her.

A lot of these still need work,

and we have sufficient amount of

time to be making clothing of

this quality, and it's not

happening.

So as bad--as off the mark as

it is, I really put heart and

soul into each piece that I

make.

in yourself.

The problem is, though, if it

doesn't resonate to the outside

world, it's not gonna do you

any good if you just live in

your own bubble and you think

it's fabulous, fabulous, even

if it doesn't work.

>> To match leopard and then

you have a table-cloth-looking

pair of pants, there's no

consistency whatsoever.

You have ideas that need to be

confined.

For the second dress, I would've

chose another fabric.

I would've maybe added a

chiffon, a tie to it...

And richen it a little bit.

>> I personally think the choice

of fabric is horr-en-dous.

In Mood, where you have every

fabric imaginable, that you

chose this one is tragic.

>> However, you do take risk

and I appreciate that.

But you have an edit problem

that is not going away.

That's this look, and then the

second one--what I love about

the '70s, the jumpers, and I

love that jumpers now are back

in style because I just think

they're the easiest way to be

stylish without being

uncomfortable.

And what is the top?

>> Muslin.

>> Wow, so that look costs $11.

>> That is pretty impressive.

I did like the print of your

um, jumpsuit.

I like that it's sheer in the

back.

Makes it very sexy.

bottom of your seat or

But I like the work in the back

of the top very much.

It's '70s without it looking

full-on costume.

I love the chiffon in the back.

I think it's really, really

It feels very spirited, it feels

I think that shopping online,

it will photograph really

'70s was the music, the weed

smoking, the freedom of how

the air was.

So for the first look, I made

the skirt a shorter skirt.

It's very easy, but it's very

layered, and it's very much me.

The second one, I just did

a really easy maxi dress.

>> To me, it look incomplete.

I mean, that shirt needs to have

sleeves to be able to wear it.

And I think that the pattern

on top of the other one does not

work.

Why didn't you do a skort or

a really chic wide-leg pair of

shorts?

And then the other dress looks

a tent.

>> It's not my favorite.

It feels very hippy dippy, but

not in a good way.

The layering is not working.

I don't like the length of the

skirt, I don't like the length

of the vest with the blouse.

It doesn't have a Lux feeling to

it.

>> I like the fact that you

went to a whole different, very

early '70s, granola, pass the

pipe kind of girl.
