>> Welcome to the Harlem School

of the Arts.

I am delighted to introduce you

to Yvette Campbell, President

and CEO, an Byron McCray,

Director of Visual Arts.

And to these incredibly talented

students who have created these

fabulous works of art.

>> Working with children.

♪ ♪

How cute is that?

>> Designers, for this

challenge, you will be

collaborating on a work of art

with one of these students.

That work of art will serve as

the inspiration for an

avant-garde look that will walk

the runway.

You will have two days for this

challenge.

So that's an indication of how

ambitious we want you to be.

All right?

Let's head off to the art

studio.

>> I'm really excited about this

challenge, because my parents

run a foundation for kids using

the arts as a form of

transformation.

>> Come on in, everybody.

We randomly selected students

for you for this challenge.

>> And so this is something

that's very dear to me.

>> Grab materials, establish a

work space, and start creating

your work of art.

>> How old are you?

>> I'm 16.

>> So what inspires you?

>> Like, emotional connection.

So that's why I, like, tend to

paint things really simply.

>> I love kids.

This is gonna be a fun challenge

for me, but I'm sure some of the

designers have their

hesitations.

>> No...I think we should put

something like bustier-ish.

>> Okay.

>> I'm not 100% sure what a

bustier exactly looks like,

but, um...

>> The student artist I'm

working with is Skyy.

>> The dress also should have

like a nice silhouette, should

be like fitting.

It's be really pretty.

>> I don't know if all

12-year-old girls are very vocal

like Skyy is.

>> Do you live around here?

What's your favorite activity?

What was art like for you as a

kid?

>> I probably would have dealt

better with her if I had a

cocktail with me.

>> I'm a New Yorker.

Yeah.

>> But I love her swirls.

It's really beautiful.

She did a good job.

>> Cool.

>> I've got a great artist.

His name is Antonio.

He's a very quiet young man.

So we're getting along great,

actually.

Guggenheim?

>> Um, no.

>> If you feel like I'm messing

Now that I'm back, this is my

first chance to sort of do my

own thing again and really prove

myself.

That does add a bit more

pressure.

wolf-like head.

>> Like, cape thing.

>> I'm gonna cry every, single

time they say anything negative

about your work.

I'm just gonna be like, "No,

that's my baby too!"

>> It has, like, some, like,

galaxy feel to it, you know?

>> It does! Okay, we're in

outer space.

>> Sure, sure.

>> Do you usually listen to

music when you work?

>> Yeah.

>> What kind?

>> I like really depressing

music.

>> How's this thing so far?

>> Oh, it's fantastic.

In some ways, it looks like the

Earth is crying into itself.

I think I'm gonna be using that.

>> So why don't bring some

maybe more like blues and

purples and...

>> They're more like trees on

fire, which I like.

>> So you're--this is where your

face is going, right?

>> Yeah...But I'll just start

with, like, very basic one, if

that's okay.

>> Okay, yeah. No, totally.

>> The last one was a pretty

tough one.

We had a group challenge, and my

group didn't get along very

well, and that was the first

time I got any negative

feedback.

>> Failure is opportunity in

disguise.

>> Failure is opportunity.

I like that. You're so right.

>> Kai is like a little Dalai

Lama or something.

>> Maybe that failure, it was

showing you that you need to...

>> This is what you need to do.

Can I get your phone number

and call you when I get upset?

>> I love the movement in that.

>> Yeah.

>> Our painting is essentially a

self-portrait.

You almost get the sense of

vulnerability.

Our skin fades into the

painting, like we have no

clothes, in a way.

But it's also very empowering.

Hence we both drew crowns on our

head.

Yeah, I could definitely use

some empowerment.

I need a big ol' red crown about

now.

>> Designers and art students,

>> I think it's very colorful,

and I love that shoulder.

Red is coming out.

>> Mm-hmm.

>> This is so good.

>> I love this.

minutes to sketch a design for

your avant-garde look, then

we're going shopping at mood.

>> I'm never having kids.

Oh, My Lord of the Rings.

Well, I kind of want to do

something very organic, airy,

almost goddess-like.

>> It's cubist, it's primitive.

I feel that this challenge is a

good opportunity for me to do a

totally different silhouette.

>> When I started with the

competition, I felt like I stood

at a good place, second

challenge I won.

And then I sort of got lost.

Recently, I found I'm sort of

confused more than ever.

>> This is like the challenge

and I'm, like, working with a

tree.

I am not organic.

I like things that are fake.

>> What the hell is inspiring on

this canvas?

A horizon and a tree and the

roots.

These red and oranges and

yellows, fire and possibly

burnt.

I'm sweatin' this!

I can't--I'm gonna work with it,

but...What are you doing with

yours?

>> It's just gonna be a new

dress that I am taking colors

from the painting and actually,

physically making them look like

brush strokes.

>> I think the most important

part, the inspiration, is taking

more of the emotions and the

feelings from the work and not

doing something too literal.

>> Designers, let's head off to

avant-garde look, you need a

lot of yardage.

yards of the tulle as well.

>> I've selected quite a lot of

chiffon.

I've never worked with chiffon

before, and hopefully, that will

translate more to a avant-garde

garment rather than just a

pretty dress.

>> I can get faux fur?

>> Yeah.

>> Mood is beyond stressful.

This is an avant-garde

challenge.

>> Avant-garde doesn't have to

be costumey, doesn't have to be

exaggerated.

It's just gotta have like a

forward-thinking feel to it.

I don't know about weird, but

Like Lady Gaga wears

>> To me, avant-garde is a

little edgy, like you have to

really do something that turns

your head and makes you think,

"How was that done?"

This chiffon makes me want to do

a musical or something.

>> I like this stuff.

>> Love the hairdo.

Lovin' it.

>> I'm seeing a lot of bright

colors, feathers....fur.

Compared to others, my look is

definitely more quiet.

>> I usually don't go bright

orange-red.

The color combination is kind of

throwing me for a loop.

>> You want me to take a risk.

>> I have this circle skirt that

I had painted to look like the

effect of wood.

>> So my idea is like, you know,

forest fires.

>> Mm-hmm.

>> So it's gonna, like, the

fire traveled across this part

of the forest.

So what is here is like burnt

and crisp already.

But, like, on the breastplate

right here, I'm gonna put, like,

Joshua McKinley hearts.

You know how people carve into

trees who they love?

>> Right.

>> So that's still gonna be

left.

What do you think?

>> Mm-hmm, I like the sketch.

>> Baby, I used my mom's

initials.

I lost my mom two years ago to

ovarian cancer, and she

definitely was my rock and my

inspiration.

I don't think that I

would be here today...

If it wasn't for her.

>> I like the story behind it.

>> Look at that faux fur.

It's intense; I'd like to see

what you do with it.

>> You gotta be the right person

to use faux fur.

I mean, you don't want someone

walking down the runway looking

like the abominable snowman.

That's not avant-garde.

>> Everybody's doing it.

I'm just saying.

>> Fabulous.

>> And that's leather?

>> This is pleather.

>> Pleather.

>> Could not afford leather.

>> Does anybody have a really

>> I have a semi-long...

I'm being serious.

Get your mind out of the gutter,

boys.

Boil and bubble.

>> I dyed the bodice and the

pant fabric.

My biggest concern is really

creating that silhouette.

The pant balloons out over the

hips, and that's the big thing

is not making her look silly.

>> Man down.

>> Two men down.

>> So essentially, for this

garment, the nude princess cut

dress has to fit perfectly.

I feel like fit is always very

important, but there is no give

with the fit of this dress.

>> So my girl and I, we painted

our favorite flowers, 'cause she

loves flowers.

>> Uh-huh.

>> So what I'm doing is I'm

taking the organza and I'm

cutting out the very

non-constructed ruffles.

When you cut raw silk organza,

the edges are gonna fray.

So to keep from fraying, I am

burning the edges.

Kind of smells like when I used

to burn my Barbies.

It makes it turn this cool

brown color, kind of like wilted

petals.

So just to let you know, I'm

burning down the work room.

>> Fortunately, I'm an Eagle

Scout, so I'll put out fire.

>> You're a needle scout?

>> A needle scout.

I am now.

>> It looks great.

>> I'm really excited to see

what Becky is doing for this

challenge.

>> It's gonna be really, really

short here.

>> Oh, you wanna make it short

here?

>> Oh, yeah.

>> You know, I'd like to think

there's a part of it that my

direction in the team

challenge might have helped her

focus her energies a little bit

more and be a bit more creative

and think outside the box.

>> That's really pretty.

>> I don't know what I'm doing.

>> This is the first time that

I'm kind of stressing out.

I just hope it doesn't look like

a House of Dereon dress, but...

>> Blasphemy.

>> I love Beyonce, though.

>> Bert, are you gay or

>> I'm gay.

>> Yeah, well...

>> Um, widowed.

>> Was it sudden?

>> No. He had aids.

It was love at first sight.

>> I was very fortunate.

>> My partner John, I had never

lost anybody that was that young

that meant that so much to me.

And it sort of took me to a

very, very dark place.

I turned to alcohol, and that

took me for a very long, uh,

downward spiral, which I now

gratefully am out of and am

enjoying my life again.

a bigger thrill than just

talking to my sister on the

One thing that we talked about

is we're gonna scrap the orange.

>> When it's next to the black,

it looks way too Halloween-y, so

I agreed when she came in and

said let's put some--

>> is that your idea?

Excellent.

>> Yeah, so I'm listening.

In a way, this is gonna be a

collaboration too.

>> Do it.

>> Cool.

>> I-I'm really trying to not go

that one little step away from

avant-garde into costume.

>> Right, you want something

that does walk that very fine

line.

>> Still tasteful.

>> I think it would be

impossible for you to do

anything that wasn't tasteful.

>> So I just made her keep

talking to me so that I could,

like, take what she does as an

artist and put it into fashion.

>> Yet still be you.

tapping into a part of you that

maybe even you haven't explored.

explored orange.

>> This is going to be one of

the wings.

So, basically, this is just

going to be a sleeve that's

going to be fully feathered.

talk about a Hiawatha moment.

You don't want to have this look

say, "Take me to Geronimo."

so, you know, I knew it was

going to be something that was

pretty.

Right now, it's looking like a

>> First thing I actually did

was make cubes.

And I wasn't sure it was too...

Much like kindergarten blocks.

But after I had the dress

together, I put them on and I

just started making more and

more and then they grew and

grew.

>> You want to keep it

sophisticated to a degree.

>> Exactly.

>> And sharp.

>> Yes.

>> And you don't want the look

to appear to be a craft project.

>> Exactly...Which is, you know,

a danger when I go...

>> It is a danger.

>> With cubes and denim.

>> Who does a gown out of denim?

And then all these little boxes

over here, like, FedEx just

shipped them and left them

there.

>> I mean, Becky, I'm just going

to assert--for an avant-garde

challenge I don't think this is

doing enough.

>> I was worried about that.

I'm not sure what else to do.

>> Step up and out.

Avant-garde.

>> Well, when Tim says he's

worried, that means that we

haven't wowed Tim.

And if we're not gonna wow Tim,

we're certainly not gonna wow

the judges.

It's upbeat, it's happy,

The proportion of these pieces,

like this painting, will

probably change a little bit.

Tim was very specific in telling

us was not to have a literal

translation for our garment.

And it seems as if Bert has done

that.

>> I kept thinking, you know, I

love dresses, but I didn't want

to do red carpet.

I didn't want to do elegant.

>> This is not expected of you.

>> Right.

>> Which is a good thing.

>> Yeah, I hope--hope it's good.

>> Because, generally, I don't

think a lot of colors when I

piece.

And then I just flow it down.

Are you taking this far enough?

>> Mm...I really thought I took

a chance in going to somewhere

that I wouldn't normally go.

Like, I've never worked with

chiffon before and--

>> but that doesn't matter.

>> Okay.

>> You know, I respect that, I

appreciate it, but avant-garde

means to lead.

And you can't say, "Well, I

haven't worked with these

fabrics before, so for me, this

is leading."

It has to say it in the look.

>> You didn't like the idea?

>> No, it's not that I don't

like it.

You don't want it to be wholly

expected.

>> And you think this is

expected?

>> No, I'm--I'm not saying that.

>> He didn't say much negative

things or positive things.

But then, I don't think he's

extremely satisfied of what I

have.

>> Okay.

>> Well, we had worked on this

idea of, you know, a horizon

line with the life, which is the

roots, and death on the surface.

>> This needs to be able to

stand on its own independent of

the narrative.

>> Right.

>> So if it needs an

explanation to really understand

why it's doing what it's doing,

that could be an issue.

>> Hey, Tim, how's it going?

>> How are you both?

>> So good.

>> Pretty great.

Is it too literal an

interpretation of the painting?

>> Josh C., I just don't feel

his design process is refined

enough.

I think it'll come one day, but

in this competition, he needs to

have it now.

>> I don't want to interfere

with your vision...

>> Right, right.

>> As much as pose some

questions to you.

>> Sure, of course.

>> Because I don't want you to

go home again.

>> Agreed.

>> Obviously, it's hard to take

criticism, but he's so right.

The piece is too literal, it

could just be a wolf costume.

So let's start editing.

Minor setback, but in the end,

the perfect way to step back and

For this challenge, we paired

you with an art student from the

Harlem school of the arts.

Welcome to the runway, students.

Together you created a piece of

art that served as the

inspiration for an avant-garde

look.

All right, let's meet the

judges.

achievement award winner Michael

Kors.

Let's start the show.

>> I am over the moon.

I kinda did a asymmetrical hem

that mimicked the profile of the

bird, and I made her really

strong as the eagle with the

leather and the high collar.

My artist loves it.

So I believe I did a great job.

>> I really like the dress that

I made.

It looks amazing.

The only thing I'm wishing is I

had more volume on the bottom.

But the dress fits her

perfectly.

It's nice and tight.

I did the fitting beautifully,

and she looks great in it.

Her walk's amazing.

I can't complain.

>> That's awesome.

>> It's definitely more quiet

and more subtle, but I think

sarin's is the most powerful

voice, and I hope that translate

in the design.

But I'm nervous that I'm not

pushing myself hard enough.

I just think I could have done

better.

>> I am thoroughly pleased.

I definitely love this idea of

monogramming the skirt with some

initials that definitely mean a

lot to me.

I'm just hoping that the judges

are able to hone in that it's

avant-garde.

the runway, I think it looks

great.

It's attractive.

The shapes my artist had on his

painting, I interpreted it in an

avant-garde way.

It's the proportion of this

large pant...being very

high-waisted is somewhat

forward.

Do you like it?

>> It looks really, really good.

>> I love the drama.

I love how it moves.

There was definitely elements

that I would do in my own

garment...and there's elements

of Skyy, so I'm pretty happy.

>> That's hot.

>> I would so buy that.

I'm excited.

It's what I envisioned.

The movement's beautiful.

I took the painting techniques

that Kai likes to use and put

them into the garment.

I really wanted her to look like

a dusted fairy.

Oh, she looks like a fairy.

I love it.

>> I think my design is great.

I like the strait jacket.

But I just am concerned about

using orange and blue.

Even though that was my artist's

aesthetic, it's just not

normally what I do.

But all in all, I really like

how my look turned out.

>> I am honestly relieved.

I'm pleased.

I feel like it's visually

stimulating.

For me...This is avant-garde.

I definitely feel like I've

created something that is beyond

my everyday design.

I really like it.

>> I'm loving how it's moving

down the runway.

It was very true to the

painting.

It was very simplistic, but I

kinda amped it up with the

technique and the color to make

it my own in a way.

And I love how the little

train's working in the back.

I'm all smiles at this point.

I am really happy with the

overall look.

It's attractive.

I think it has impact.

I think he says something about

me and my love for this very

African aesthetic.

But I don't know if it was

particularly avant-garde.

we kinda started talking about a

toxic tree, and the roots were

alive, but everything above the

surface was dead.

And so basically it's little

memoirs of people that carve

things into the tree being left.

It was kind of the idea--things

may burn and people may pass and

go away, but the memories are

still left.

>> I like this look.

I liked especially what you've

done to the fabric.

You painted this fabric, right?

>> Yeah, it's--actually, it's a

double-sided neoprene with--

it's actually a light tan, and

then there was a darker tan.

I did two coats on it.

>> I just love the way you

painted that.

I think that looks great.

>> Thank you.

>> I think this is great,

Joshua.

I also...Love the skirt.

It just seems to drape very

naturally, and I also love the

contrast of the top and the

bottom and the...The foundation.

I think it's very well done.

>> The texture on the skirt is

I like the texture of the flame

on top.

If her hair was in a ponytail

and her makeup was just clean...

Someone would actually wear it.

>> Yeah.

>> But with the sleeve and the

makeup and, you know, it's--

it's a little Tim Burtony.

Sometimes we don't need the

crutch of styling.

The fact you painted that

is great.

What do the actual little

symbols say on it?

There's something on the back.

>> Well, this is just my

initials and then my mom's

initials.

in that how like graffiti

within that makes it even

cooler.

>> I worked with my artist.

Her name is Sasha.

And she said she really liked

wolves, and I said let's just go

for it.

My favorite part was she kind of

exposed the ribcage and put a

heart in the middle of it.

I tried to interpret that for me

as, you know, these layers--the

protective and then eventually

you get to the heart.

I just really wanted to express

the two sides.

She looks like a Victorian

cocktail waitress in Las Vegas.

She's got the Faster, Pussycat!

Kill! Boots on...

The miniskirt, the harness, the

puffed sleeves, the crazy hair.

I don't think it's fashion.

My first thought was trashy.

Look at someone like McQueen

who'd take references from all

sorts of dark places but make

them look beautiful.

This you didn't make look

beautiful.

It's not there.

Sorry.

>> First thing I was thinking,

"I'm gonna be a hooker for

Halloween."

>> I totally disagree.

I mean, I know it's subjective,

and I know it's an opinion,

but...When I saw her come out,

it was a totally different

feeling than what you're

feeling.

>> Yes. Beauty is in the eyes of

the beholder, but there's a

definite consensus here...

>> Sure.

>> That says it's not beautiful.

>> You know, I'm struggling with

the proportions as much as

anything.

It just feels kind of awkward

and a little dominatrix-y.

But I think the elements are not

bad.

It just...Just doesn't come

together.

>> My artist Antonio, his

painting that we did together

was mostly geometric shapes.

So that was my cue to work

with the colors that he used and

also the shapes.

fashion are not in harmony.

I don't feel like it's a garment

that anyone would want to wear.

>> I've been sort of trying to

bump it up a bit.

It's been suggested I'm too

simple.

>> Well, this is not simple.

>> Avant-garde doesn't have to

be beautiful in the traditional

sense of the word.

You know, sometimes it can be

oddly beautiful.

It makes you think.

like a girl with a misshapen

body with some stuff glued on

It doesn't feel modern.

>> Too perfect.

>> Your hand is all about

perfect, perfect, perfect.

"F" it up.

>> That's what keeps it modern.

>> I actually liked it, and I

liked it that it was very

literal.

There were some things there

today that bored me, that were

sad and drab, and this is not

sad.

This has a point of view.

It's loud, it's cuckoo.

I don't think we're gonna be

seeing ladies at cocktail

parties wearing this.

>> Really?

>> No.

>> I think this is just too

outside the box.

There's just these forms that

just seem to be applied.

But I don't get it.

>> Laura?

>> I had the pleasure of working

with Kai, an adorable

11-year-old.

When she painted her rose, she

painted little green thorns on

it.

She said thorns make roses

original.

So I did this boning that kind

of represented the thorns.

And then when we were done with

the painting, Kai doused the

entire painting with water.

So I wanted to take this ivory

and douse it down like it became

this light, airy thing.

>> When it walked out, I was

looking at the painting that you

were referencing in your

inspiration, and I had a hard

time seeing how that linked to

the dress.

Now under your explanation, I

can see it.

I can see the stems of the

roses, you know, I can see the

hard and the soft.

>> I love the interplay of the

corset with the beautiful, sheer

gown.

>> Thank you.

>> I do like the way you handled

the fabric, and I do like the

boning underneath.

>> I liked the inspiration.

I can see where it's coming

from.

I love the mixture of the soft

with the hard.

I love the hard black lines

coming through from underneath.

I think it's a beautiful color.

I liked it a lot.

>> Thank you.

>> Olivier.

>> My artist Tanya, she likes to

draw dreams, and she had lots of

lines going on across the

canvases.

And she liked the color blue,

and she likes bright colors.

So I thought of this dreamy,

sort of soft but has lots of

structure and lines going

across.

>> Olivier, do you think I love

it?

>> I think you don't like it.

>> I think you're right.

The entire dress really looks

sad.

The colors are sad.

Even your blue looks sad.

And the painting doesn't look

sad to me.

It's much more vibrant.

>> The top here is so well done,

extremely well constructed, and

then you get below the waist,

and you just see this really

cheap fabric.

Almost take the chiffon--the

lemon or the blue chiffon

and make that into the skirt.

That would be much more

ethereal, a little bit more

romantic.

The interpretation is good, but

it's boring.

>> I think it's anything but

boring.

There's too many details.

There's one layer too many, and

then the asymmetry also makes it

hard.

The top is beautifully made.

The bottom is less than that.

>> I think that the bodice, the

constructed side, is

spectacular.

But then the rest of the dress

looks like mood exploded on her.

You need to not be afraid of

being powerful.

You gotta umph, you know, push

it, push it.

>> Anthony Ryan.

>> Well, I just wanted to do a

portrait of me, but I wanted her

to be included, so she did one

of herself next to me...And

if you kinda look at the

bottom of the painting,

it almost looks like our skin

fades into the painting.

>> I love this dress.

>> Thank you.

>> I can see the inspiration.

I still love that you're

color-blind and you do beautiful

things with color.

She looks sexy, she looks

modern.

It is a very simple look...

>> Right.

>> But yet very powerful, and I

like that.

>> Thank you.

>> What I really appreciate

about this--you got the attitude

of the painting without being

literal.

You also found a way to

manipulate the fabric, which I

think is interesting.

There's dimension with the

color.

And you've got that undone hem,

but quite honestly, I think it

goes with the garment.

>> Yeah.

>> I, on the other hand, am

struggling with the execution

a little bit.

It feels almost a little

homemade, as though the pieces

were just applied without

attention to some element of

application that would make them

feel more finished.

And the bottom, again, it's

sheer, it's sexy, it's pretty,

but it just feels like there's

another under layer missing.

But I really like it a lot.

It just feels like it's not

there.

>> When it first walked down the

runway, I was kind of thinking,

"Is that ticker tape?"

And then I realized it was the

brush strokes, and I actually

really like it.

I like the way they're kind of

trickling down the dress

slightly, the combination of

those.

The kind of very opaque

colors with the chiffon and the

two textures together work

together really well.

It's a very cool dress.

>> Thank you.

>> That no one would wear it.

>> Your look was one of my

favorites, to be honest.

the designers that we like the

most.

Joshua...Mckinley.

>> How cool was that skirt

and the painting on the

neoprene?

>> Very cool.

>> It was cool.

>> The texture...

>> The skirt was amazing.

>> And I love the graffiti on

the tree.

>> That touch was very well

thought out and looked extremely

well done.

>> I actually love that he

didn't only sew his garment, but

he also halfway painted it.

And that's what we were all

attracted to.

>> He's the only one who did

that, actually.

>> I love the contrast of very

bright and feminine and then the

very somber but yet very organic

looking and feeling from the

waist down.

>> Artistically, this was very

I love the mix of the soft and

the hard.

structure of the corset showing

through the transparency.

That kept it...

The corset thing was a cool way

to interpret the roses, don't

the picture, I couldn't see the

correlation.

And then when she explained it,

it was like, ah, yes, I can see

what you're talking about now.

>> I like the hard or more

structured, the softer, more

flowing garment.

It's a great concept.

>> It was really, really

Time-management on this dress,

I mean, that is a lot to--

He really made a beautiful,

interesting dress that was

simple from the colors to the

strong point of view.

You could see what the

inspiration was.

someone wearing a version of

that...But it was still powerful

on the runway.

And I love how he interpreted

the brush strokes.

and the brush strokes to the

chiffon, to the hair, to the

shoes, the whole package was

there and that's what art should

be--everything comes together

short with the execution at the

It looks like it was just stuck

on and it could be unstuck as

layers on top, one too many on

And it was just not executed at
