scared as the first day or

freaked out as the first day.

Gosh, I was freaked.

I feel that I belong in here.

I feel that things are not so

shaky.

I feel more confident about

taking on another challenge.

I think my panic makes me just,

like, get it done, get it done,

and then the next thing I know,

I'm like, "and it's."

I feel like the eyes of the

judges are starting to narrow in

on me and I don't want to

disappoint this time.

Clean it up.

I just need to clean it up.

I hope it's not make something

I think I made a bad impact

with the judges, considering I

was in the bottom two, so they

have this idea that, "Next time,

he's gonna be in the bottom

again."

So I don't want to be that

person and I definitely want to

show them that I could go up

again.

>> For your next challenge,

you'll be designing for a

client.

A very important client who

knows a lot about fashion.

I would be a little nervous if I

were you.

Let's bring her out.

>> When Nina walks out,

I immediately think, "Oh,

>> So you're designing for me.

>> You know, the designers have

designed for me in the past,

but never for Nina.

>> So I'm gonna be very tough on

this.

>> I am terrified.

I'm nothing like Nina.

I'm just a little more

alternative and she's more

classic.

I don't know what she thinks of

me, you know?

>> You will be designing a look

for me that I can wear to work

during the day and then be able

to go out to an industry event.

>> Going into this next

challenge, I'm feeling pretty

good.

I'd say my style easily

transitions from day to evening,

so I've got that going for me.

>> I like classic with an edge.

I wear a lot of streamlined,

clean, tailored silhouettes.

I do not like voluminous

clothes.

I do not like lots of pleats.

I do not like loud patterns or

colors.

>> "I do not like this.

I do not like that."

What do you like?

>> A lot! There's a lot.

>> Just kidding.

Let me tell you about the prize

for the winner of this

challenge.

First of all, you have bragging

rights 'cause Nina Garcia wore

your outfit.

But you'll also have your look

featured in a Marie Claire ad.

And that ad will be on the top

of New York City cabs driving

all over New York City and

millions of people will see your

look.

I don't think there is any other

way to be more effectively woven

into the fabric of New York,

and I would just be thrilled to

win it.

and sketch and then I will have

a consultation with each and

every one of you before you go

shopping.

You have 30 minutes to sketch

and then you will be consulting

with Nina one by one.

In the back of the room,

there are two HP Touchsmart

desktops.

On them, you will find images of

Nina for inspiration and

reference.

So use them.

We want you to succeed.

>> I'm obsessed with that skirt

line.

>> The idea of pitching my

sketches to Nina is pretty

amazing.

You know, the fact that we get

to talk to an editor and design

for her, it's probably one of

the best experience I will have.

>> Straight line.

This is a little cut out

architectural thing and then

these are the pockets.

This challenge is the toughest

to date because we have to

impress not only Nina as the

judge, but we have to impress

her as a client.

So what am I going to do that

she has not seen?

>> When I first started

sketching, I had the idea of a

slight cowl.

Something that just barely

draped.

I also did something that was

kind of off the shoulder kind of

shift dress with the idea of,

like, being a jacket over it.

>> 'Cause, I mean, look at that

stuff on the screen.

I mean, everything's monotone.

>> Yeah.

>> Everything's almost one

fabric.

This challenge is a challenge

for me, because Nina really has

an affinity for muted tones,

neutrals.

A lot of my work is heavily

influenced by patterns and

color, so this has taken me to

another place.

>> If is a two-part sleeve,

I might just have the color go

to here in, like, a block.

I'm doing a simple, clean coat

dress, because I like them.

I think the judges are always

giving me a second chance and I

think I am running out of

chances.

>> Hi, Nina.

>> Hi.

>> So it's a minidress.

>> How mini is mini?

>> Not mini-mini.

>> And what is this?

>> This is a jumpsuit.

>> I like it.

>> Do you?

>> Mm-hmm.

>> Okay.

>> The jumpsuit, you're gonna

have a challenge sewing-wise

for you.

Do you think you can make this?

>> I'm super excited to be next

You're, like, amazing.

>> It goes a little futuristic

or more structured.

Just think dramatic yet

conservative.

and then I would shape it.

>> I was like, "I'll try."

>> So I would like to do a

jacket made out of a silk

organza.

>> But I was also thinking that

maybe you could do a pants with

one of your beautiful blouses.

>> Nina is very direct.

She knows what she wants.

One thought I did have was maybe

doing a pant like this and then

incorporating some of these

ideas into a blouse.

>> I like this idea better.

I have one drawing for you.

>> Yes, a fitted dress--

>> I am very happy with this

silhouette.

I think Nina will be hard to

please, but I really think I

understand her style.

I'm feeling confident.

I'm feeling very comfortable.

I want to introduce some of the

brocades and things that I like

to do.

I'm gonna do it in a shift dress

so that I'm not doing the same

pair of pants that somehow I've

become known for.

I love your pants.

She wants me to revise my look

and give her a pair of my

"pants," so it just adds a bit

of pressure, because I know that

she's paid attention to the

stuff that I've done.

She loved it, but she wants me

to do pants.

I'm like, "okay."

For Nina Garcia, I can tell she

likes tailoring, because she

usually dresses like that.

This should be easy for me,

because that's pretty much what

I like.

So we're thinking about giving

you two pieces, 'cause I really

want to give you a jacket.

Um, the dress is gonna be simple

sheath dress.

>> And is it going to be fitted

or is it going to be a-lined?

>> No, everything's gonna be

fitted.

I'm a little more concerned

about the jacket.

And she does not want a runway

covered with gray garments.

minutes there and you have a

budget of $200.

So let's go.

>> Danielle, are you finding the

color?

>> Um, I'm pretty close.

I'm looking for a really nice

olive green.

I can't find exactly the color,

so I end up getting more of a

kelly green.

>> So I actually start looking

at solids first, but then I just

have this voice in my head of

Nina saying not to be boring.

So then I go and find where all

the printed silks are and this

one jumps out at me.

It's a risk.

That's for sure.

>> So you have to ask yourself

whether it's a risk worth

taking.

>> Right.

To hell with it.

I'm just gonna do it.

Five yards of this.

>> You have ten minutes

remaining.

>> And I found this really

fantastic print with this

splashy stuff on the bottom.

It's beautiful.

>> You're using that fabric?

I have a cut too.

Oh, crap, there's only ten

minutes left and I can't change

my mind and we have the same

fabric.

It may have just been by pure

My game plan is just to show

Becky how she should use that

fabric properly.

expensive, I can't afford them.

I really like purples with a

touch of gray, but I have a

limited budget.

that I was looking for.

thoughts clogged in my mind.

I went to fashion school because

i was so over bartending and

waiting tables.

But I thought I made a big

mistake because everybody was

really young and really

talented.

But I was actually better at it

than I thought.

>> I love your sketching because

it's different.

>> Mm-hmm.

>> No, I'm just trying to be

normal.

That's the sad thing.

Julie's a real artist.

It's not just fashion for

fashion's sake and she's the

most wonderful companion.

She's always making people

using this down on this,

the lightest color, like a,

you know, metal gray.

>> Yeah, it's a good fabric.

gonna do.

How did she happen to grab that?

>> It was sitting in a pile by

the cutting table and myself.

It doesn't matter at this point.

I guess you just have to keep an

>> Me and Anthony got the same

piece of fabric and it's very

distinct.

That's gonna be tough, Becky.

and he said, "Oh, you're getting

And I thought, "yeah."

One will be better than the

What color this looks to you?

>> Gray. Like a gray.

>> This is gray?

>> Yeah.

>> They look purple there.

Under the yellow lights at mood,

the fabric I saw was purple,

but in the workroom, I only had

gray.

>> Muslin is a clean canvas.

It's, like, almost like

painting, so you use it

basically to mock up what you're

making.

So you first mark them and you

cut it and then you pin it all

together, sew it, and put it on

the dress form and then you can

fix it from there.

It's much easier to work with a

muslin than doing it on fabric.

soft and this is just soft and

>> The stitching here, I could--

I could do that in black.

work when it's in progress,

because no one knows how it's

going to turn out besides you,

so I'm feeling fine.

I think that you just have to

like things to look constructed,

so when I make the collar,

it's already--

the collar is a little--

>> is it too big?

>> Mm-hmm.

>> Okay, so make it a little bit

more dainty?

athletic accent, I feel like.

I think that would be a little

elements, but there's more color

being added.

I feel pretty confident about

materials and I hate it all.

And I always think when I don't

panic, a plan B emerges.

You just make the most

spectacular garment that you

can.

concerned about is I don't know

if you where a lot of bras with

your outfit.

>> You never wear a bra.

>> So I saw this fabric in there

and it was almost a modern

hombre in a way, so I kind of

went with it.

runway since we got the same

fabric.

The thing is, I don't know who

had it first.

Maybe I should have ditched it,

but I really like it.

Well, obviously, um, Anthony

Ryan and I ended up with the

same fabric.

>> How did that happen?

Mood is enormous.

>> I know!

And when we discovered it,

it was too late.

>> Who saw it first?

>> I don't know.

>> I mean, this looks very safe

for you.

>> I feel like it's very

conservative or old-fashioned.

And don't make this a micro

mini-mini.

>> Very plunging, which may not

be appropriate for work all the

time.

I'm very worried.

Not when it's all tailored and

I kind of like how that looks

very industrial.

so you can see a little bit of

look as though Nina got up

quickly from a restaurant and

the napkin stuck to her.

>> Maybe it's a roundness that

you give it just in the hip

area.

>> Ooh.

I like that.

>> I just think maybe Nina won't

opt for a little black dress,

because this is a design

competition and she wants

something a little different.

>> I don't mean volume like--

right.

>> Right.

You're on a good trajectory.

>> Yeah.

>> How's Cecilia?

>> I was looking for purples and

complimentary yellows.

So I got this.

I'm gonna have this gray and the

rest is gonna be this fabric.

>> No, that's all I got.

>> It's just looking a little

sad.

>> As soon as she says "sad,"

it was just a bad affirmation.

The funny thing is that this

gray looked--under those lights,

looked purple.

>> Oh.

>> I couldn't believe my mind.

>> Cecilia's struggling again.

They just said her color palette

was muddy, but she only really

has a limited amount of fabric,

so I'm kind of worried for her

at this point.

>> It's mousy and mousy.

And what I am trying to get you

to do is give it some--

>> I appreciate when somebody's

blunt about something you're

doing wrong, because that's how

you grow, but I don't have a

plan B.

Okay, I have a lot of work to

What I'm thinking is take the

critique and be brave and keep

working and do the best I can

with the dress.

>> I redid the sketch to show it

to you with the wide-legged

pant.

>> Wide-legged pant, okay.

Is this bodice gonna be all blue

and then the pant's gonna be all

blue?

>> Yes.

>> Kimberly's look, not my

favorite.

I don't like the gold, glittery

stuff with Navy.

It's very sailor-y.

I can see it looking very prison

jumper-esque.

>> Yeah, it just looks like too

much blue and then the matching

pant is blue.

>> Mm-hmm.

>> But, I mean, again,

follow your gut.

If you feel that you want the

blue, you can also still go with

the blue.

>> What's--tell us your

concerns.

doesn't want the blue, who wants

I think the blue is going to be

Here I am.

I've sacrificed a lot to be on

Project Runway.

I lost my mom to breast cancer

when I was 17 and recently,

I lost my brother, so it's kind

of bittersweet to have this

opportunity.

I've been through a lot of stuff

and things like that could

probably...Break some people,

um, but it motivated me to keep

on going, so.

Why don't you try dying it in

something?

>> Black?

>> Mute it down.

Give it that gold pop

underneath.

>> But I haven't dyed very much

before.

The only time I've ever dyed

anything was for the first

challenge when we dyed our

sheets.

>> I've took water and mix 'em

in a cup to test it so I didn't

have to make a big batch first.

I don't know how to gauge.

I'm dying from mustard.

I'm not dying from white.

Now everything has to change.

All right, let's start the show.

>> For this challenge I really

stepped up my game, so I'm

feeling amazing right now.

My model looks amazing in it.

The front is shocking, the back

is gorgeous.

I know I took a risk with the

color, but I think it paid off

and I'm hoping that Nina is

gonna fall completely in love

with it.

>> I think my look looks awesome

on the runway.

It's very, very modern and

clean.

I'm just thinking for this

challenge, it hasn't got any

bling or jazz going on that

would make it photograph the way

I think they need it to

photograph.

But I like the dress very much

and I think Nina would like it

too.

>> I feel really good, I made a

pair of trousers that fits

really well--the way I wanted it

to.

I finished sewing my jacket and

I pulled the whole look

together.

So when my model walked down the

runway I felt really, really,

really happy.

>> It's up there, it works, it's

nice.

I like what I did with the

skirt.

You know, it's very well made,

it's very tailored.

I definitely think it's

something that Nina would wear,

but I wish I would have turned

that volume up...

Just a hair.

>> I think it's an okay dress.

I'm sure the judges are

thinking, "Didn't we just see

this fabric? Isn't this the

same as Anthony's?"

But it's got a teeny-tiny pop of

color in the piping.

I just hope that it's different

enough.

>> I am very pleased.

I like it a lot.

It's exactly as I envisioned.

I love the way the pants fall.

It's the perfect length.

It's the perfect width.

I love it, I love it a lot.

>> You're just gonna have a

pants business of your own.

>> I really screwed up today.

I have the feeling that I'm

going to be in the bottom three.

Usually my fellow designers will

make comments, but today

everybody's very quiet.

>> I think that my garment is

sleek and modern and definitely

appealing to Nina.

I really like the lines of it.

I love the color that it turned

out to be.

I mean, overall, I'm very happy

and I guess I'm very happy that

it's finished.

>> The color is so good.

>> At this point I can only

really go uphill.

>> This look is not exactly

how I wanted it to turn out.

That fabric is way to opaque,

it's not sheer.

But I feel like Nina would wear

the blouse.

I think it's something I could

see her in.

>> Julie, it just took you a

couple of challenges but you

got skill, girl.

>> I was happy with my garment.

I mean, it was kind of thrown

together--obviously it's a

short time, but I'm still

content with what I came up

with.

>> As my dress comes down the

runway, the most noticeable

imperfection is the hem.

It scares me pretty bad.

I think that if I was able to

execute it in the right way,

it would have been a pretty

dress.

>> I think the execution was

great, it looks beautiful.

I'm really positive that I've

created a look that Nina really

likes and reflects our sessions

of critique, so I think I

definitely belong in the top.

I think this garment really

represents me just because I do

a lot of structure and

architectural type of design.

and also one color, because it's

a lot of structure in it, so I

So this is a skirt and this is

a top.

>> I like the fact that you gave

me the option of separate.

I like the versatility.

I think it looks very current,

sketch to Nina and she liked it.

And she definitely said the

giant collar I had needed to be

tremendously smaller.

I didn't think it was gonna be

So it looks significantly

different than the last time

that I saw it.

Not my favorite, Julie, I'm

I guess, and I know it's

something that's supposed to go

from day to night.

And I'm not really sure where in

the day it fits.

more than I do, but this is

unwearable.

>> This is pretty much the

design I offered Nina.

I think I took the wrong fabrics

back to the workshop.

So I just decided to finish the

dress as well as I could.

You are in the lower scores, or

in the higher scores?

>> Oh, yeah, I know I'm in the

lower scores.

>> You know.

>> I know from the client

already that she was this

unhappy with it.

>> I can't imagine what the

fashion department would say if

you came in like that.

I mean, I think they'd--first of

all they'd extricate themselves

from you and then they'd go to

the other end of the room and

then they'd all go "What on

earth is Nina Garcia wearing

today?"

>> Listen, the fabric is a

disaster.

I think the colors are really

tough for her.

It's not for Nina.

>> I don't know about this look

for day time.

I don't know how this fits

within the context of an office.

>> It looks creased already.

I don't think this would survive

12-hours of my life.

And then the choice of color is

very sad.

You could have dyed this.

either and it was too late.

Tell us about your look.

>> Originally I had a sketch of

basically this top as a dress.

And she loved my pants so she

wanted it to be separates.

And I gave her a very Nina-esque

look in terms of styling with

soft hair, um, just one cocktail

ring and threw it off with a

different colored hot pump.

>> I think it looks great, I

could wear it during the day.

It could transition into the

evening very easily.

And I like the way you styled

it.

>> Thank you.

>> I love this look.

I feel like you don't have to do

anything to it because you gave

everything already that it needs

to have, versus there are some

other outfits on the stage today

that are great but Nina has to

accessorize them in order to

make them do the sing and dance.

And this does it by itself.

I like it a lot.

>> I love that it's separates.

It's so smart that you got into

what a modern working woman's

head is like.

>> This is a special shirt.

You wear that top and it

transforms how you feel about

yourself.

Now you could come in and be

doing your expense forms in that

and you'd feel like you were

living a million-dollar

lifestyle.

And that's the point of fashion,

it's transformative.

It's just gorgeous.

>> Well, I was really determined

to get her to wear prints.

And when she saw what I chose

she wasn't too pleased with it.

But that's all I had.

So I ran in the back and I dyed

it from mustard to this.

And, um, I think the color

really worked out.

transformation.

It was a lot of mustard.

>> I love this jumpsuit,

I really do.

I think it looks so beautiful,

especially from the back.

It just falls really beautiful,

her bum looks good.

And I'm shocked that you learned

how to sew four months ago.

I can still not believe this.

How is that possible?

>> I learn fast, I don't know

what else to say.

>> I really like the shape of

it, and it feels very flexible

so that it works with the big

life that Nina has and the big

life that most working women now

have.

Good for you for hearing the

feedback about the color and

hustling to make that happen.

the planet that she would say,

It's beautifully tailored.

>> Well, what I originally

proposed to Nina was to do a

sheer jacket with black pants.

She really liked that you could

see the elements of tailoring

behind the sheer.

I definitely think that I should

have gotten a fabric that was

more sheer so you could see

these details.

Because with this fabric they

don't show up as well.

>> It's very pedestrian.

It honestly looks like a blouse

that one of my aunts would have

worn in the 80s.

The big shoulder pads and--

you know, all she's missing is

a big wide belt.

>> Here's the thing.

You've made some beautiful

blouses so I did try to steer

you into let's not try to be so

ambitious--let's do a blouse and

you'll do a nice pair of

trousers.

But you did wanna do it.

And I know that you had to

improvise because I see the

result.

hate this, I really don't.

I think it's kind of pretty.

But it is not a garment for

Nina.

>> Clothes are emotional.

When you put them on they make

you feel something and they

make other people feel something

when they see you in them.

your probably a bit depressed

too.

Which you might be after this

particular episode.

But if Nina came in wearing

that, honestly I'd think she

was--she was ill.

something really sharp and

clean and that I could wear to

silhouette, I don't think this

was mundane or boring.
