You know, 'cause I was here,
in America, on September 11 th

and just taxiing out
to fly to Britain

for my kids' birthdays actually.
Two of my kids' birthdays.

And the captain said ,
"There's been a terrible accident.

We could see that one of the two. . .
We could see both the Trade Towers.

We could see one of them was on fire.

And when we heard it was a plane,

we immediately thought
it was an accident.

Then , we heard it was two.

Like everybody else you go,
"No. This is some act of sabotage."

And then , we heard
about the Pentagon .

I just started thinking ,
you know, "What can I do?"

You know, 'cause there's gonna be a
spirit shift in New York, in America.

This is suddenly a place where
people are gonna feel vulnerable.

First time in a long time.

Being born at the end of
World War I I , I was only a baby then ,

but I grew up,
in the, sort of, shadow of that.

So, all my parents and the grown-ups

talked about this idea
of being in a war.

You saw how they dealt with it,
and it was with humour,

and it was with music, and ...

That's how they dealt with it.

On that note. . .

I was talking to someone
about being a pacifist.

I'd take it back
to what I used to say

when you'd get into arguments
as this, kind of, student,

or the early days of the Beatles.

Some people'd say,
"I'll always be a pacifist."

And I used to say,
"Yeah , but you know,

"if someone like H itler
was invading Britain ,

"I don't think I could be
a pacifist any more."

I'm not a hard guy,

but I think I'd have to sort of
go and try and fight it.

Silence would be worse,
the way I see it.

so there was three,
it was two boys and my dad at home.

So, we had to do all the cooking .

So, he'd drop off, you know,

a half pound of sausages,
or a chop, couple of chops.

You know, that was the meal .

And the rest was just peas
and stuff out of cans.

So, it was kind of difficult at first
just eating the other stuff.

But they want her
to take a test today, a biopsy.

she thinks she's fine,

people's minds at rest, especially...

As a result of September 11 th ,

we have a lot of people
who are still grieving .

I wondered if
you had learned anything

from the times you've grieved ,

with your mother, John Lennon ,
and with your wife.

Anything that would be
of help to them .

You like to think you're tough ,
you can take these things

and you're gonna, you know,
"Give me your best shot."

But of course, when you lose someone,
it's not really possible.

You can put it inside yourself,
and hide it if you want,

but I don't think
that's a good thing .

So, for me, what I found
was to talk to people a lot,

not worry about crying ,
like a baby sometimes,

if that's what you had to do,

not worried about
who was looking at you .

And just really let it all out.

Then right before we started ,

one of the guys, one of the crew,
he said , "You nervous?"

I said , "No."

"Thank you . Now I'm nervous."

But he doesn't look too nervous.

I think we talked
about coming to America

more than just specific
events like Ed's show.

For us, you know,
to come to America was a dream .

Because, you know,
most of the music we loved

and had inspired us came from here.

So, to come to the place

to come to New York, and to come
to Detroit and places like that,

it was like Mecca to us.
