Ruby, our future awaits.
Our destiny is our past.
The glory of our legacy shall carry us boldly forward.
Our future... is this.
Our future looks a little small and spindly.
It's called a rootstock.
Ellen down at the nursery grew it for us.
It will one day be an original O'Reilly apple tree.
Really?
Oh, that's... kinda cool. But
how? Those trees haven't grown for, like, forty years.
Good question.
Let's ask science, shall we? You see
I just need to graft a twig from an original O'Reilly apple
onto here.
And boom.
It becomes an O'Reilly, too.
That's kind of Frankenstein-y, but kind of awesome, too.
Yeah. Come. Let's go find a twig from an O'Reilly varietal.
I'll explain the rest on the way.
You see, when the scion and the stock connect...
You were up late watching YouTube videos, weren't you?
Cells near the junction adhere to opposing tissue and interdigitate.
This is so cute, but I wouldn't want to intrude on you and your rootstock.
No, I want you to be there when the polysaccharides
are deposited at the junction for strength.
Oh, sheesh.
Hey, magic well, got anything for me? Please.
I gotta-go-the-well-beckons-bye.
Ruby.
Polysaccharides! It's the best part!
Her loss, right?
(Spanish)
I wish I could just spend time with her.
Those are really weird clues.
At this point, it would actually
be weird if they weren't weird.
That's true.
What's with the junk pile?
Sam's six weeks behind on homework
so his mom basically grounded him
to the library.
At this rate, I'll be out in
six months to a year.
With good behaviour.
Then you better make it one to two years.
Okay, let's start with the easy one.
The phone number.
Yeah, it's, like
world's all-time easiest clue ever...
Way to jinx it.
Hello?
Hello. I'm...
I said I don't want my ducts cleaned.
Sorry. Who is this?
I jinxed it.
Someone woke up on the wrong side
of the phone.
Maybe try again?
Yeah. Maybe if I explain why, then...
The number you have dialed
is temporarily out of service.
She blocked me.
Maybe she prefers text?
Gee, did I say
"Let's start with the phone number?"
I meant the... set of gears.
Who would use one of those?
Cyclist? Watchmaker?
Maybe an engineer, or a mechanic?
Mechanic. We know one of those.
Yes.
A gear? Something inside the crankshaft?
The driveshaft?
Maybe something inside the gearbox?
Don't know. I'm not really up to date
on my automobile gear knowledge.
It was more of a basic gear-gear
like this.
Oh, nice.
That could be for a bicycle.
It depends on the size.
Could be smaller.
Probably not a bicycle, then.
A clock, maybe?
- Maybe. - And we know
where to find plenty of those.
- Thanks, Pete. - Thank you.
So, have you seen anything like this?
Gears, only small
not, like, from a car, or anything.
I would totally wear that.
Like, as a pendant, or something?
Sure.
Well, do you have one?
I don't know. But you never know.
- Feel free to browse. - Okay.
Over there you'll find our exclusive jewelry collection.
Oh. Check out these cool blockbusters.
Math-a-Mambo, Sing-A-Long With Sal
Operating Your New JX-267-B.
Hey.
(Spanish)
Where did you get these tapes?
They look like they're from the library.
Before my time. Take them. Please.
Really? But you never give away anything for free.
You caught me in a weak moment.
Well, thanks.
Wait. How do we play them?
Yours. For the low, low price of eighty bucks.
She's good.
- Thanks, anyway. - Yeah.
She bailed at polysaccharides? That's the best part.
I know. I know.
Anyway, thanks for helping.
I still don't know which trees are which around here.
I sure hope we can find something.
About thirty years ago, there was a fire
that ripped through the O'Reilly grove.
Wow. It looks like it all got plowed under after the fire.
Your original trees would've been...
right here. I am so sorry, Daniel.
Bit of a setback to my bright-future feeling.
Paula?
You got something.
Well, we're talking fifty years ago, but
yeah, I sort of do remember something.
Tom mentioned "the first tree."
It came over with the original settler. Dunlop? Darcy?
- Donnel. - Donnel. Yeah.
He planted a tree
and it just grew and grew.
Would've been 120 years old, even back then
but I have no idea where it would be. You have a lot of acreage.
Any idea where I could start?
I don't know, Daniel. It's like going back in time.
I could do that.
There's gotta be a VHS player somewhere around here.
I got film canisters, a slide projector.
Yeah. Lots of old tech, but no VHS.
Barlovento?
Let me see?
Barlovento.
Means windward in Spanish.
That's pretty.
Wonder if it means "follow the wind" or "Go where the wind blows you?"
Clark.
As in good ol' Officer Clark?
Calling Emerald police.
Emerald police department.
Hi there. Yeah, could I please speak to Officer Clark?
Sorry, he's not in 'til two.
Oh, okay. Thank you.
He doesn't start his shift until two.
Any idea where he might be?
Knowing him, working out. I see him down at the park every day, running.
Grab your sneakers, Mina, because looks like we're joining him.
Okay.
Hey. There he is.
When I grow up, I wanna be like him.
Same.
- Hey. - Hey.
Everything okay?
Yeah. We're just impressed that you're out here every single day.
Yeah.
It's all about commitment.
Anyway, I should get going.
Barlovento?
If that's a shoe brand, I don't know it.
No. It's Spanish. Do you know any? Nice language.
Sure it is, but I don't have a lot of time for languages.
- Right. - Anyway
I should go.
You know Emerald. Hotbed of criminal activity.
Good to see you two.
I think we just found our wisher.
Okay. We know Officer Clark is the wisher
and we know that his wish is
"I wish I could just spend time with her."
But we don't know who "her" is.
Yeah. Who could be the woman he wants to spend more time with?
- Maybe his wife? - Could be.
I mean, police work long hours
- crazy shifts. - Yeah.
Gotta be tough on a marriage, right?
Maybe Officer Clark needs to have a date night? We could try to...
I'm sorry, but he beat you to it.
Wait. How did you hear us?
Decoy.
But usually it's to pretend to not hear something.
One rose once a week without fail, on their date night.
Oh. Wow.
I've never seen anyone so careful
about a work-life balance as Vince Clark.
So, you don't think that
there's anything missing in their relationship?
Oh, I doubt it.
He just loves her to bits, and she knows it.
They really make time for each other.
It's kind of a... an inspiration to the rest of us.
The whole family's an inspiration. I mean, look at his sister.
His sister, Emily.
Emily Taggart, the lawyer?
And she has two little girls. That would make more "hers."
- Then let's to talk to her. - Okay.
- Thank you. - Thanks.
Donnel's original property survey.
Oh. Wow.
I was right.
- Here's the road. - Yeah.
And the well.
Few stands of trees.
But not "the" tree.
Maybe he left it off on purpose?
He didn't want just anyone to know where his precious apple tree was.
Hey, does something seem off to you about this map?
Yeah, this isn't your entire property.
There should be more here.
We need to find the rest to find that tree.
Yeah.
What are you doing?
I'm just looking to see if there's anything odd.
Take your pick.
Creepy bird cages; that man in a raincoat.
This is a 100-year-old compass.
There's nothing in this room that isn't odd.
Well, one thing I've got over you, Paula, is O'Reilly genes.
Born an O'Reilly, think weird like an O'Reilly.
Hey, what is that?
This right there. What is that?
Cold front.
It means rain.
Rain.
Raincoat.
What's another name for a raincoat?
Mackintosh?
Exactly.
A type of apple.
There's something stuffed in the back.
Bingo.
The last time I saw Vince was way back as far as... last night.
Oh, you guys seem pretty close.
Oh, very. He comes over every week for Taco Tuesdays. The girls love it.
- Officer Clark seems really busy. - Yeah.
Do you think he wishes he could spend more time with you or the girls?
He's pretty good about that, actually.
Yeah. He coaches the girls' soccer teams on weekends.
He even offered to help them with their science homework.
- Sounds like a great uncle. - He is.
So you are not who he's missing.
I'm sorry, did he say something about missing us?
No. No. But I think he's missing someone, a "her."
Oh, really?
Any idea who that might be?
Yeah. Not going there. You're gonna have to ask him that.
Thank you.
Ask him.
That's what she said, so that's what we'll do.
Emily was really weird about it, though. Maybe it's sensitive.
Well, you know, asking the wisher about their wish
is always the hardest part.
Hey, do you see that?
In his hat. I think there's something, a picture, I think.
Picture in his hat?
My dad keeps a picture of my mom inside his wallet.
So she's always with him, he says.
Maybe it's the "her"? It has to be.
Oh, we gotta see that picture.
Okay. Time for Operation Distract a Police Office
So We Can Secretly Take a Picture of the Picture Inside His Hat.
Catchy.
Hey. Officer Clark.
I think I got our orders confused.
Are these fries supposed to be for you?
Me? No. I just ordered the cedar tea.
Are you sure?
I mean, 'cause I could have sworn I've seen you eat fries before.
I'm sure you have. But not today.
Okay. Sorry about that. See ya.
Good job. What'd you get?
I got...
Kendra Clark
Emily and Vince's middle sister.
A few years older than Vince.
So sad.
Sounds like this doesn't end well.
She went missing about fifteen years ago.
The family was devastated. I'm sure they still are.
Thanks, Ms. Amani.
No problem, guys. Good luck.
This is so sad.
I've been chasing clues like this is just another wish, but it's not.
- It's really not. - I should have known.
I knew there was something Emily wasn't telling me.
We could talk to her again?
But this time we'll know what we're getting into.
Yeah.
So, he and Kendra were close?
Yeah.
They grew up together.
I'm a bit older.
But he idolized her.
That's so sweet.
Oh, she was tough on him
school, sports. That's why he's so disciplined now.
They brought the best out of each other.
So, when she went missing?
He was beside himself.
You know, I chalked it to Kendra's
I-don't-care-what-you-think-I'll-do whatever-I-want misadventures.
And, in a way, I had it easier
you know? I'd just passed the bar. I got my first job.
I just threw myself into work, but Vince?
He focused on Kendra.
- He had to find her. - Yeah.
But he couldn't let it go.
And when the police couldn't find her and, you know, wouldn't.
It's complicated.
You girls taking such an interest in people?
It helps.
We need to find Kendra.
We have to.
How are we gonna find a missing person after all these years?
One that even the police couldn't find?
Because we have an advantage the police didn't.
A magical well, magical clues and a hopefully magic phone number.
- Now we know who to ask for. - Wait.
Hold on. Here.
Use my phone.
The no-duct-cleaning lady blocked your number, remember?
Right.
Hello?
Hi there. Can I please speak to Kendra Clark?
- No. - No, no. Don't hang up.
Knew it couldn't be that easy.
So, do you think maybe Kendra wanted to disappear?
It's hard to say. We don't really know anything about her.
Watch out. Double order of the recent past coming through.
So, I looked her up and Kendra is all over these.
Got...
Science.
Violin.
Science.
Wow. Looks like she won an award for winning the most awards.
Yeah.
Got into first-year engineering on a full scholarship.
Engineering?
The pendant?
Maybe it's hers and Officer Clark wears it to remember her?
Okay, it sounds like she had it all.
I mean, this isn't the kind of life you just disappear from on purpose.
We need to figure when she disappeared
how she disappeared and where she might have gone.
I'm on it.
Okay. So, we're talking due east from the well. That way.
Yes.
Yes, that makes sense. The Celts associated east with water.
Where did you get such a knack for solving puzzles?
It's hereditary.
I get it from my daughter.
Okay. Here we go.
- This way. - Okay.
Two furlongs, thirty-two rods, six feet, seven and a half inches.
Down to inches? That's weirdly specific.
Weirdly O'Reilly specific.
In feet, exactly 1853, the year it was planted.
There's not much here.
Wait. Here's a missing person.
Oh.
Ooh, what is it?
Somebody from California.
Some semi-famous fitness instructor, or something.
Another about her.
And another one.
But nothing about Kendra?
Not yet.
Oh, wait, here's one.
The first article about Kendra disappearing
and it's not even about her?
Not really. It's about how
Officer Clark's family and friends, like Pete, were raising awareness
because no one was looking for her.
A full month after she disappeared.
Yeah, why wasn't this, like, front page the next day?
Don't know, but I know who we need to ask.
Well
because nobody really took it seriously, you know?
Not the... not the news, not the police.
I wore that shirt practically a year straight
spoke out about it, but still no action.
But Kendra was this star student.
Yeah, well.
What?
Yeah, sure, she was this star student.
She was a very kind, giving and wonderful person
not to everybody
not to the people who were supposed to find her.
To them, she was just another missing black girl.
No.
Yeah.
It's not fair. It's certainly not right.
But it's the truth, it's what happened to Kendra.
And Kendra's whole family.
Yeah.
You know, Vince looked and looked everywhere for her.
He even became a police officer hoping that he'd be able to find her.
But, by then, years had passed
and people they'd just, sort of, forgotten things.
He must be so frustrated.
It's the kind of thing that makes you feel truly powerless.
How do you live with that?
You just do.
Maybe that's why I bang on cars for a living
or why Vince runs.
You gotta let it out, somehow.
Sorry, guys. That's all I got.
I feel gutted.
Me, too.
But I also I feel like we need to talk to Officer Clark.
Okay.
They say that the world's oldest apple tree was planted
in 1826, or something.
Wow.
Chopped it down a few years ago.
Well, hello, old man.
You might just be the new record.
Oh, what?
Incredible.
Just incredible.
This, Paula
is everything that's right with the world.
It's strength, stability
and a new hope.
Yes.
Yes.
Daniel?
- Something wrong? - Look at this.
What is it?
I don't know.
Your uncle used to go on about these things.
He said they were all over the place. He said...
well, he used to say a lot of things.
What did he say they were for?
Maybe it was just another weird O'Reilly thing?
Hey. Let's go make you a tree, huh?
Really?
A bunch of young people want to help me find my sister?
I mean
you have pulled off some long shots in the past, so...
why not?
Great. And you're not just humouring us?
Oh, there is a bit of that. I mean
I have been at this a while.
Well, we could be fresh eyes.
I guess.
Okay, let's start with an easy one.
What do you remember about Kendra before she disappeared?
She was first-year engineering.
She was busy with that, plus math and Spanish.
What do you remember about that day?
The last day?
Come on, guys. Is this necessary?
Fresh eyes, remember?
She left us a message on August 17th of that year
saying she was going off grid for a couple weeks
do some field research.
Two weeks came and went, we never heard from her.
Did the police ever find out what the field research was?
No.
They assumed she was a runaway.
They assumed she was with the wrong crowd.
Because she was a black teen
they assumed everything, so they didn't even look.
But I did.
University didn't have any record of any fieldwork.
And that last time you saw her, what did you talk about?
Let me show you.
She was excited about this water-filtration project.
And this.
I'll show you.
Okay, it's recording.
Show me what you got.
Whoa, Vince, look at you go.
Oh, okay, okay.
Got it. Sit. You have a test tomorrow.
'Kay.
Will you show me how to bend the ball?
Later, yeah? Okay, I'm going to quiz you.
Condensation versus evaporation, go.
Oh, you know this one, Vince. You know this one.
Condensation is...
I know it has something to do with water.
Okay. Solids? Liquids? Gas?
States of matter.
- Gas to liquid? - Yes.
Okay. And evaporation?
- Liquid to gas? - Yes!
- Good job. - Now show me how to bend it.
I'll show you how I bend it, all right.
Score!
Kendra.
Vince, you just got your butt whupped.
See?
She literally kicked my butt, like a big sister.
Is that enough to go on?
Almost.
Can I just take a picture of the rest of that stuff?
Okay, but just be careful. Like, that box and this.
It's all I have left of her.
Your friend is intense.
Yes, she is, but
trust me, if there's anyone that can find your sister
it's her.
I don't know what you'll find that I haven't.
We don't either, but
in the meantime, can we borrow that VHS player?
Yeah. Sure.
Wow.
She even takes her doodles to the next level.
I mean, look at these birds.
I seriously need to get a skill.
So guess who's got two thumbs
and couldn't be beat by analog technology?
- This guy. - How'd you do it?
I mean, there's no HDMI, just RCAs
so, slapped an A/D converter on the RF and...
Oh, okay. Thank you, Sam. We know the alphabet. Does it work?
Well...
Hang on.
Okay.
(Spanish)
(Spanish)
- Google translate. - Yeah.
Okay.
And there it is in English, like magic.
"Hello. Welcome to Windward Language School.
Get ready to enjoy the wonders of the Spanish language."
But wasn't Kendra already learning Spanish in school?
So why dig up this old videotape to learn from?
She already had a teacher.
It's strange.
Strange enough to make the well vision.
But the question is why?
So, is the language school still around?
It is. La Escuela de Idiomas Barlovento
based in Peru.
All their courses are online now.
Of all the ways to learn Spanish, why would you pick this one?
I mean, VHS tapes? That's commitment.
Maybe it had something other ones don't.
Like a particular dialect?
- How do you mean? - Well, like
my mom and I speak Farsi
but we have our own specific regional dialect.
That's right. There are three major dialects of Farsi
and even more subdialects.
So, if you're gonna travel somewhere specific
you might want to learn that dialect.
If you want to travel somewhere specific.
So, she got a tape from that specific area.
Kendra was going to Peru.
But why?
Peru.
'Kay, but which part of Peru? I mean, it's a pretty big country.
It's, like, the size of... three Montanas.
I don't really know how big Montana is, either, but...
But why wouldn't she tell her family where she was going?
Was there something she didn't want them to know?
Maybe if we find out what was going on in Peru at that time
that would help?
Okay.
Peru 2007. Got it.
On August 15, 2007, there was a huge 8.0 magnitude earthquake.
Whole bunch of people died.
And a whole bunch more lost their homes.
Says here that aid organizations got in there fast
but they needed help from medics
search-and-rescue experts and engineers.
Like Kendra.
She would totally do that.
But why the big secret?
I mean, would you tell your mom
you were going to help with an earthquake?
No way. She would say it was way too dangerous for me to go
and then she would hide my retainer, so I couldn't go.
But once you had already gone there and she could do nothing about it
then why wouldn't you call?
Because...
Because earthquake, the sequel.
What?
There were aftershocks in a town called El Quetzal.
Well, we don't know that she was there.
She could've been anywhere.
El Quetzal. I... I know that. It's a... a thing...
A team? A... a song? A b... a band? No, a...
A bird.
That bird.
But doesn't that say "Jorge" on it? I thought that was the bird's name.
Wait.
Okay. Jorge, Peru.
Jorge Chávez International Airport in Lima, Peru.
Yes. Kendra was so excited to help the people in El Quetzal
that she was drawing the bird on her notes. But...
when she got there...
You... you think...
maybe... maybe she's still okay?
Hey, what's up?
Hey, Dad. You sound weird.
No, no, I'm fine.
Are you okay?
- Not really. - What?
This wish is taking a really not-good turn.
Oh, no.
I'm a bit shaken up. Can we talk?
Okay. Yeah. I'll be right there.
So the well goes, "I wish I could just spend time with her."
Only how do we do that if she's not alive?
All I can do is break the wisher's heart
and the family's hearts
into, like, eleven different pieces.
Wow. This is a rough wish.
And it keeps getting rougher. Why?
Shouldn't I be getting better at this?
Well, look, this isn't a spat between a couple of teenagers
or some stolen academic credit.
This is life and death.
I know. I...
So?
So Officer Clark needs to know what we think happened.
And then it's up to him. He can do what he wants with it.
So...
I have to tell him.
Maybe we could tell him?
'Course.
Yeah, so...
people needed basics, you know?
Food, shelter, clean water.
And...
engineers...
who know how to show people how to do that for themselves.
Like, filter their water.
Kendra.
So...
It...
might be possible that if she was down there that, well...
There were some... pretty bad aftershocks.
- Ruby. Ruby. Don't. - Plus some brutal landslides and...
Just stop.
But I though you'd want to know that...
What do you know?
You've been looking for, what? Two days?
I've been looking for years.
I'm an officer of the law. You're a kid.
Look, I'm...
I'm sorry. I didn't think that
I would find her like this
but I know you want to spend more time with her
so I just need something else
- to go on. - No.
I asked you to stop.
That was rough.
Yeah.
Maybe rough isn't the right word. More... arduous.
Yeah.
So, what if I'm wrong?
I mean, Officer Clark has been working on this
a lot longer than I have.
- Yeah. - Thanks, Dad.
Really enjoying your syllables.
And it still doesn't connect with the wording of the wish.
"I wish I could just spend time with her."
Maybe you need to confirm Kendra's death
before you do anything else.
But how?
Officer Clark is obviously hurting
and I don't want to do any more damage.
The thing I don't get is that h...
Hey, Dad, is this Grandpa O's phone number?
Yeah.
Why does it have the 353 in front of it?
Is it because he's in Ireland?
Yeah. He's doing his mystery tour of the old country
have to dial the country code
or else some guy in Nebraska wants to know what I want on my pizza.
I have to go talk to Mina and Sam. Right now.
Call Grandpa and say thanks.
Here. The international code, 011.
And then...
Peru is +51.
And then add in your local area code, then the seven-digit number.
Okay.
Look, wait... wait.
(Spanish)
Hi.
(Spanish)
Sorry, I only speak inglés.
- It's okay. - I'm calling about the earthquake
that happened in 2007.
We're looking for a missing volunteer, Kendra Clark.
Probably would have arrived a week after the first quake.
Do you guys have any information?
Yeah. We... we had students come from all over
Canada, America, Brazil.
You said you're looking for a Kendra?
Yes, Kendra Clark. C-L-A-R-K.
Kendra Clark.
C-L-A-R-K.
Yeah, there is a Kendra, but no last name.
Maybe it's her?
Si, Kendra.
(Spanish)
One second.
(Spanish)
Yes, we remember engineering student, Kendra.
She liked music and science.
Yes.
And she had a little brother.
Yes.
And we have stories of all the people she helped.
(Spanish)
(Spanish)
But nobody knew her last name, or where she was from.
She didn't talk about herself much, so we had no family contact.
(Spanish)
Kendra.
But she's always with us
on our Wall of Heroes.
Wall of Heroes?
A sad story, actually.
I know you don't want to see me, but I have something to show you.
They're friends in Peru who want to talk to you.
About Kendra.
Who?
People who saw her the way you saw her
as a hero.
They have stories to share, when you're ready.
News flash: loving someone is the craziest thing you can do.
Opening up your heart like that?
Are you nuts? Why would you do that?
Because when that heart gets broken, smashed, ripped apart...
How do you recover from that?
The world goes grey.
All that's left alive in you is a sharp sting of grief.
And that heavy, dull ache.
But then, you discover something new.

Hi.

And that new discovery is the sliver of light.
The rush of joy that you had the chance to love at all.
And then...
Closure.
I needed that.
I think I always knew, but...
I didn't want to close the book on my sister, you know?
I don't blame you.
It's hard.
So, here we are.
Finally.
We can take the time to celebrate my unbelievable sister.
To be with her.
Including friends we never knew we had.
Friends who have inspired me to start volunteering in Kendra's honour.
To use what I know to help other families like mine
find missing loved ones
so they get what my family didn't
someone who listens.
And someone who cares.
Think Kendra would be happy to know that
she's still kicking my butt, fifteen years later.
Sometimes what people face is not fair.
But we carry on, bringing our loved ones with us.
And when we're ready, we heal. And not a second before.
Somehow, if you let it
that sliver of light grows, too
opening into a door, a threshold.
Through which we can celebrate the past and embrace the future.
