particularly Ghislaine,

the Ghislaine Maxwell trial.

She has been convicted of helping
American financier Jeffrey Epstein

sexually abuse teenage girls.

Ghislaine Maxwell just got convicted
of five of six of the serious

counts against her, including
the most serious counts -

sex trafficking of a minor.

REPORTER: Three of her siblings
were inside there

to hear that verdict
being handed down.

REPORTER: She is from a dynasty
that has known disgrace

and is now disgraced herself.

REPORTER: Ghislaine Maxwell
was the socialite

whose manners and magnetism
attracted princes and presidents.

REPORTER: Prince Andrew was friends
with both Ghislaine Maxwell

and Jeffrey Epstein during
this lurid chapter of abuse.

REPORTER: The women
who took the stand,

they say that Ghislaine Maxwell
identified their frailties.

It was her charm and her magnetism
that made them feel safe.

REPORTER: Ghislaine Maxwell faces
up to 65 years behind bars.

That could potentially be
the rest of her life.

The road to justice
has been far too long

but today justice has been done.

The women were to take off
their tops and bras

and present their breasts
to the men.

It was really as if just
being Ghislaine wasn't enough.

I began to see that
there was a deficit there

which was being filled by
being this charming host.

I said to Jeffrey, like, she has
really masculine, aggressive energy.

And he said something like, "Yeah,
she's got a bigger penis than me."

She ferociously slammed the table

and my court reporter looked at me
and said, "I'm so scared."

We had to find massage therapists
for him

and the younger the better.

I have been silent for 20 years.

I don't want to be a victim.

I remember a little girl
walking downstairs crying

and she was wearing a uniform.

You know, I'm like,
"Whoa, she's a kid."

And she says to me,

"They are nothing.

"They are trash."

I think there were signs
that things were happening.

At what point, if she did,

did she see what was
becoming of her?

REPORTER: The Football League's
first elected lady director

is still, in fact, a student.

She's at Balliol College in Oxford
studying French and history.

My name is Michael Crick,
I'm a journalist,

and more than 40 years ago
I was president of the Oxford Union.

To make ends meet,
I did some tutoring,

and one of my tutees
was Ghislaine Maxwell.

She'd been at Marlborough,

one of our top private schools
in this country.

She hadn't done as well in her
A-levels as she should have done

and that's where I came in.

Ghislaine would sit there
on the corner of the desk.

There was I - I was 21.

She was 17.

And she knew she was good-looking
and she was very self-assured

but she was incredibly bright.

She picked things up
very, very quickly.

But the problem was
she just didn't do enough work.

I vividly remember her
showing me one essay

that was just two-thirds
of one side of paper

and I was expecting sort of
seven or eight pages.

She'd probably written it
in ten minutes on the bus.

There was a lot of pressure
on her to succeed,

particularly as her father,
Robert Maxwell,

he'd actually given money
to Balliol back in the 1960s.

Oxford United have gained
a reputation, justifiably,

for attractive football.

But that image is not just
restricted to the pitch.

It goes all the way up
to the boardroom.

And I'm delighted to welcome
Ghislaine Maxwell.

Well, I actually went
to a boys' school

where there were something like
1,000 boys and 40 girls

and so the few girls
that were there,

we decided to get together
and get ourselves a football team.

And so I played midfield for them
and we were very successful as well.

I have a feeling you're a rebel
till the end.

When I arrived at Oxford,
she was a very well-known name.

The name Maxwell was huge in those
days because of her father, Robert,

but she was also very rapidly,
I think,

established as a person
in her own right.

She was in the glossy magazines,
she was in the newspapers.

I think there was always something
fascinating about Ghislaine.

What is this person like?

What is it like to be that famous?

CHEERING

She was perceived as the child
who could do no wrong.

It's just one of these things
that happened,

that father has a particular
favourite child.

Of course, Bob had nine children
but she was the youngest

and she was totally
and utterly spoilt.

And I think she was spoilt
from birth.

She said to me one day, she said,
"Don't forget, I'm Daddy's girl."

to Robert Maxwell.

HE WHISTLES

REPORTER: Robert Maxwell
is one of Britain's most

influential businessmen.

He was born Jan Ludvik Hoch
in Czechoslovakia

to Jewish peasants who were
swept away in the Holocaust.

Today, he is the stormy petrel
of the international

big business world.

Robert Maxwell now owns
the Daily Mirror, the Sunday Mirror,

the Sunday People, the Sporting Life
and two Scottish newspapers.

It was Bob Maxwell who introduced
me to his favourite daughter.

And she was lovely.

Very young, very attractive,

but very quiet.

Almost timid.

She was literally
the apple of his eye.

She'd be all lovey-dovey

and go up and snuggle up to him
or give him a kiss, sit on his knee.

Things like that.

Especially if she wanted something.

Money, gifts, luxuries.

She knew how to work her father,

let's say.

And that's exactly
what Ghislaine did.

The old boys' network, which leads
from public school to Oxbridge

and then to the top positions of
power, is under threat from within.

Undergraduates at Oxford have now
started visiting state schools

in a bid to persuade more pupils
to apply to go there.

The Oxford of that time
was very marked still

by distinctions between class
and birth and money.

I don't think she was entirely seen
as being of that top drawer.

Families who'd been there
for many generations.

Oxford had all these different
kind of cliques.

There were the Oxford Union people,

whom really seriously
wanted to go into politics.

People like David Cameron
and Boris Johnson.

Ghislaine had a different group,

which were more sort of
famous household names

like Hanson, Sainsbury,

and she flirted
and talked to those people.

One of the first times
I photographed Ghislaine,

she was at the Bullingdon
Point to Point.

She was darting about, very
physical, rushing around.

She was flirty with boys.

I remember clearly, I don't think
she was drinking at all,

and I remember quite a few people
ended up in the mud that day,

but not Ghislaine.

Ghislaine was ambitious,
even within a world

in which she already sat
in the glossy posse.

She wanted to make her mark.

One good thing about her not
being entirely from that world

within the English class system,

I think she was very easy
at talking to people.

She had this extraordinary voice -

this very sort of low voice,
almost like a purr.

I think she also did quite enjoy
being queen bee.

She always presented herself
as more knowing.

A sort of wise counsel to probably
some quite giddy people.

I met Ghislaine soon after I arrived
as an undergraduate

at Oxford University.

REPORTER: The jeunesse doree
of Oxford,

hell-bent on enjoying themselves.

Those of a nervous disposition
should now be warned

that they may well be looking at
future Prime Ministers

and Chancellors of the Exchequer
and, God help us all,

a future Minister of Defence.

And there was one set of people
in particular

living life to the limits.

A lot of alcohol.

There were a lot of drugs.

There was a lot of sex.

It was pretty wild.

And a lot of them had serious money.

And that's one reason I could
never really be integrated.

And, at its heart, among other
people, was Ghislaine.

She was a great social organiser.

She knew everybody's name.

She did draw you in
quite literally,

sometimes grab you by the hand
and pull you in

and say, "Right, come and meet
this person,"

and so she helped you
to overcome your own shyness.

So she made you feel welcome.

Even though in retrospect it's clear
that I didn't really belong...

..for that moment I felt,
"Oh, yeah, I'm here. I've arrived."

So good to see you.

Come on in. Greetings.

She was interested in sex.
I mean, we have to say that. Yeah.

I do remember one evening
meeting her in Jericho

at one of those little houses
that students lived in

and there is Ghislaine on the sofa
with her hair...

She must have been smoking.
I can't remember.

This incredible eye -
sort of like, zap!

You looked at her and you felt
all the attention's on you,

so she managed to, even if whatever
was going on behind the eyes,

you looked at her and she was
completely compelling.

I was trying to chat up
this very beautiful girl

and Ghislaine was very...
Like a puppeteer.

"Now you should say this."

She prompted in this wonderful
femme fatale-ish way,

with the cigarettes
and the whole thing.

She realised that she could direct
a willing sort of, you know...

She knew what to say.

Ghislaine was outwardly
very confident.

But there was always that sense
that there was something brittle,

vulnerable, frantic, beneath
that socially confident exterior.

And I began to see that
there was a deficit there

which I felt was being filled
by being this charming host.

And then suddenly, it happened
almost overnight.

I just couldn't take it any more.

What had seemed to me like
this warm, funny, exciting,

inviting, thrilling social scene

suddenly seemed like
a nightmare networking

of bright laughter
and false friendship.

I could see the skull
beneath the skin.

There are many things to be done
to set this nation

on the road to recovery.

And I don't mean
economic recovery alone

but a new independence of spirit
and a zest for achievement.

Around that period of the early
'80s, the upper classes

were celebrating and there
were lots of parties going on.

And it was also the beginnings
of a sort of yuppie -

a new type of person developing
who was very entrepreneurial

and selfish.

REPORTER: Today, you're proud
to be a yuppie?

Yes, all right, I admit it.
I'm proud to be a yuppie.

In London, I was working
for the Tatler magazine.

Ghislaine was popping up
at quite a few parties.

Part of the crowd that Ghislaine was
in was quite a hard partying crowd -

Trinny Woodall,
Susannah Constantine,

and they liked going out late
and flirting with young men.

This was pretty close
to the top set.

I met Ghislaine Maxwell a very
long time ago, in the 1980s,

quite shortly after I first moved
to London from Ireland.

London, really, for me,
was like a huge ladder

going right up to the sky,
a bit like Jack And The Beanstalk,

and I just, you know, was clambering

up this endless, it felt like,
ladder.

And Ghislaine just happened to be
one of the people

I sort of brushed up against
on that path.

There was this really sparkly-eyed,
very interesting, fun woman

who seemed to be the sort of life
and soul of the party, in a way.

I remember being at a dinner where
Prince Charles was sat next to me.

They were a sort of elite,
privileged crowd,

either rich or titled or both.

It was still a pretty sexist era.

There were women who would respond
very differently to men

than to their own sex.
She wasn't like that, you know?

She was sort of one of the boys,
in a way.

I remember Ghislaine as
very beautiful, charming,

hugely entertaining
but slightly manic.

I was invited as a plus one
to a weekend party

at Headington Hill Hall.

Ghislaine was hosting herself.

She was always scanning the room.

At the end of the dinner,

Ghislaine announced that
it was time for some games

and she disappeared and came back
with some scarves,

but explained that she was going to
give each of the men a blindfold

and they were to blindfold
themselves

and then the women were to
take off their tops and bras

and present their breasts
to the men.

And then the men
would feel the breasts

and make an attempt
to match the breast

by weight and cup size

to the woman who was attached
to the breasts.

It was all bundled up as fun.
Ghislaine was very relaxed about it.

This was a gift she was giving us.

I absented myself. I excluded myself
and said I was tired and left,

as did my friend.

But I was very struck by
how awful that idea was.

The notion that a woman
would suggest a game and...

..make it quite hard
for the other women not to play

because you would have been
the killjoy -

you're the one that doesn't join in,
you're no fun.

I mean, that's sort of
adult peer pressure.

Very difficult not to do it.

And yet if a man suggested it,

I don't think the women
would have done it.

I mean, that experience
really left me...

..wondering, you know, about what...

..what was going on with her.

She seemed to portray a very odd
attitude to herself as a woman

and to the men around her.

It was really as if just
being Ghislaine wasn't enough.

Flamboyant, vulgar,

insufferable, ruthless,

brazen, fiery,

humourless, impatient,
intolerant, rude.

HE LAUGHS

And this is an authorised
biographer!

And he likes you. To how much
of that do you plead guilty?

I plead guilty to all of it.

Could I have one more?
No, you cannot.

Jesus. Now, that's an unwelcome
visitor. Fuck off.

He could bully people.

He could be a tyrant. I mean,
he was a tyrant to Betty, his wife.

He was a tyrant to the boys.

Betty would talk about
Sunday lunch

at Headington.

He would start picking on one
of the children, berating them,

even hitting them with his belt.

And then having the audacity

to get them to write a letter
of apology to him.

Ghislaine would have operated
under these dreadful conditions

but a lot of it
was self-preservation.

Betty also told me about Ghislaine,

that Ghislaine was the one
who got away with everything.

She got away scot-free.

Ghislaine's lifestyle was lavish.

It was the best of everything.

And if you think about it,

for a girl of that age
coming onto the scene,

she's got a private plane
to fly her from A to B,

she's got the use
of a luxury yacht.

Having observed her
for a number of years,

she was quite aware
of what was going on.

I think she had the ability
to gloss over...

..certain parts of life
and take what she wanted

and reject what she didn't want.

Bob looked at Ghislaine
as if she was on a pedestal.

As if she was nothing less,
frankly, than Princess Diana.

She, I felt, by contrast,
looked at him with respect,

with concern, perhaps,

but also, I felt,
with a degree of fear.

The voice that she used,
interestingly, to Bob

was different to the voice
I saw her use to other people,

certainly myself.

It was coquettish.

Perhaps it was schoolgirl-ish.
It was a sort of singsongy voice.

It was a strange relationship.

I got the impression she was
a bit of a blank canvas...

BOB: Get out.

..whose only sense of identity,
I think,

was being her father's daughter.

I keep thinking about that
in relation to Ghislaine.

If I'd had a father
to whom rules never applied,

nothing really mattered
or anything got in your way,

how I might have turned out.

Ghislaine was a spoilt brat.

She was abrupt, she was rude
and she was demanding.

I met Ghislaine when I was working
for The European

as Paris Bureau Chief.

She would walk into this office.

She came like a kind of
sort of small tornado

and she sort of had this
hectoring voice.

The assumption was that if someone
worked for her father,

that person was there to help.

She would come in and ask people
to do things

that were completely unrelated
to their jobs.

She would ask for her mother's car
to be towed

when her mother had a problem.

Or, one memorable time,
she rang up the office.

"I'm at the Ritz and it's horrible.

"I want you to call them up and to
say that really they are below par."

She had energy. There was this
sort of impatience about her

that could be very positive,
and the negative was she was rude.

Captain, you might come
and take this back

from my secretary, would you?

Throughout the time
I was working there,

I saw them striving,
Bob and Ghislaine.

What they very much desired
was this acceptance in society.

REPORTER: Much of Britain's
elitist establishment

is not amused by Mr Maxwell.

Ordinary Brits may take a shine
to his rambunctious ways

but to upper-class Britain,
Captain Bob and his wife

remain still nouveau riche
outsiders.

I suppose it was that he was
perhaps somewhat vulgar.

It was that he wanted to be
a member of the establishment

but he wasn't quite.

He liked being photographed
with people like Mother Teresa

or, better still, the Queen.

I think he wanted the daughter...

In a way, he wanted to live
his life through her

as this sort of society figure
that was accepted.

The Cicogna family is a typical
aristocratic Milanese family.

These families have been around
for quite a few centuries.

My name is Marina Cicogna.

Ghislaine Maxwell went out
with my brother's oldest son.

She was Gianfranco's girlfriend.

Gianfranco died very young.

Gianfranco was extremely handsome.

Really, he was like a film star.

They were very nice together,
you know.

She seemed to me to be
a normal, nice,

well-brought-up English girl.

From what people tell me,
Robert Maxwell was delighted

about the relationship.

Gianfranco was the kind of guy
that he would have liked, probably,

as a son-in-law.

And I have to say, who wouldn't,
you know?

He was a nice guy,
he came from a good family,

he had a good education.

I think Gianfranco felt,
from what I understand,

very spoilt by the Maxwell family.

I understand that if they went by
a shop and he liked something,

he would find it in his room
the next day,

which for a while flattered him.

I asked, why did the relationship

between Gianfranco and Ghislaine
end after four years?

Gianfranco felt a little bit
uncomfortable

with the fact that they were
giving him presents all the time

and he felt that they felt
that he could be bought.

From what I hear,
he thought it was too much.

But if he had been
just him and Ghislaine,

it would have been easier.

I certainly think that there was
a lot of trauma there

from her relationship
with her father.

I think she actually had to work
quite hard to please him.

She still had to turn up,
I think, at his bidding,

at Headington Hall.

I can remember Ghislaine
bringing people to meet him.

Her father expected it of her.

Ghislaine would be there, I think,
bringing in friends,

and a lot of the women in their 20s

and a crowd who would liven it up
and make the party look great

in the pages of the sort of
glossy magazines.

Have you got drinks?

And then there would be
Robert Maxwell

and his publishing cronies.

Then Ghislaine would sort of
bring someone to meet her father.

And the impression that you got
was that whether by pre-selection

or whether she just had to choose,
and I think this was her role,

who would he like to talk to?
Who would he find interesting?

It was more like a court.

She was playing a part which
was way older than she was.

It sounds very privileged.

I think she had to earn
her father's love.

And the similarities -
that desire to please a man,

a powerful man,

who also enabled her to live
the way that she wanted to live...

..is really, I think,
that's the thread for me

throughout all of this.

She's still... You know, she's still
the same person in many ways

but I think also what has happened
and what she's been involved in,

something must have changed
along the way.

And I think that's the hardest thing
to put your finger on here.

After Oxford,

I remember her wanting to try
her hand at her own business.

She then started to fly
to New York a lot

and she had a life on both sides
of the Atlantic.

It was also a time when a lot
of very ambitious people -

there was a bit of a pipeline
from that Oxford set to New York.

I think she wanted to be seen
to make a mark somewhere,

and, in a sense, having two cities
at her disposal

probably suited her rather well.

The new owner of the Daily News,
Bob Maxwell.

She was in New York, involved
in trying to make something

of the paper
for an American audience.

Bob and Ghislaine, they were almost
like a team, the two of them.

They seemed to have their own
kind of language.

They seemed to be on their own
wavelength, their own level.

And I think he saw her
as kind of his representative.

When I would see them together,
she was very dominant.

Like a chip off the old block.

And would almost be playing a part.

Almost...

..copying her father -
the way that he wanted something.

He had a particular way
of going about it.

She gained that knowledge
from her father

and now she was using it
to her advantage with her father.

I was at a wedding.

I was with my first husband
and this was a wedding in America.

Very fancy.

And out of the crowd
burst Ghislaine,

advancing on my husband.

And then she juts her
generous chin my way

and says, "What is this?"

She loops her arm through
husband's arm

and walks him off into the crowd.

She was clearly intent

on being the dominant member
of the setting.

My first impression of her was
that this is a ridiculous person

who has an inflated ego,
who thinks that she can be rude

and there will be no consequences.

I was working for the Daily Mirror
at the time.

I was shown into the editor's office

and he said, "Close the door.

"What I'm going to tell you
must not get out of this office.

"The old man's gone missing
from the back of his yacht

"and there's a search going on
for him just now.

"You're going to go
up onto the roof,

"board the company helicopter.

"Your job is not
to take photographs,

"it's to look after Betty Maxwell."

The millionaire newspaper publisher
Robert Maxwell is dead.

He disappeared overboard from his
private yacht early this morning

while cruising
off the Canary Islands.

REPORTER: Tonight, as the Lady
Ghislaine lay at berth,

the gathering of Robert Maxwell's
family was completed

with the arrival of the daughter

after whom he had named
his fateful yacht.

When she came aboard and met Betty,
her mother, she was howling...

..about her daddy,
tears streaming down her face.

She was almost incoherent
at that stage.

She kept going, "My daddy,
my daddy," you know?

And it was hard to listen to,
you know?

It was...

..distressing.

I also want to take
this opportunity...

to my father, Robert Maxwell.

Ghislaine was very, very upset
at the funeral.

She wasn't crying floods of tears.

You could see her head was bowed
and she was in deep thought.

Was she thinking, crikey, you know,
what am I going to do now?

Not only was she losing
her beloved father,

she was losing a lifestyle.

Now...

..who's going to supply all that?

The headlines at six o'clock.

Robert Maxwell's business empire
is collapsing tonight.

Mirror Group Newspapers said that
in the weeks before his death,

Mr Maxwell removed £350 million
from its pension fund

without apparent proper authority.

REPORTER: In the four weeks
since Robert Maxwell died,

it's become all too clear
that he spent the past 20 years

proving those who said he was
unfit to run a public company

absolutely right.

The whole Maxwell story
was toxic here.

It entered a room before she did.

REPORTER: Sunday Mirror staff
were not surprised to hear

that offices were bugged.

Everyone knew who she was, what
had happened, who her father was.

People believed they were hateful,
awful people.

A Spanish judge says
Robert Maxwell's death

appears to have been accidental.

REPORTER: Speculation about the way
he died has been intense.

Others want to uncover
the facts of a death

which they see as suspicious.

It devastated their family

and I think it really
devastated Ghislaine.

REPORTER: Loss adjusters for the
insurers of Robert Maxwell's life

believe he probably
committed suicide,

although they say the evidence
is not conclusive.

I imagine that she went to America
to get away from that.

To dump that baggage and try and be
unfettered and free again and...

Yeah, that's not what happened,
is it?

I'm extremely sad that my father
is no longer here

and for all the difficult times

for everybody that's been involved.

But I don't feel in any way smaller
or lesser than what I was before.

I remember phoning up a mutual
friend who'd gone around to see her

very soon after
Robert Maxwell's death

and had found her very distraught,

at home with Maxwell memorabilia,
really.

Family photos, but also sort of
trophies of his business life

spread around her,

and absolutely determined to
oppose the version of events

that he'd committed suicide.

I always believe in the end
that the truth will out

and that eventually...

..the true story, such as it is,
will be...

People will know more than
what they currently do.

It'll take time.
It'll take time, that's all.

The next time I ran into Ghislaine,

it was New York City,
in a restaurant.

She was much more demure,
she was much more subdued.

There was none of that arrogance,

and I thought, be nice.

She's gone through
something horrible.

Let's give her a second chance.

Some time after running
into Ghislaine,

she called me and invited me
to a tea party.

I remember it was a hot summer day.

She kept declaring,
"I'm broke. I'm broke.

"Can you believe this
has happened to me?"

But the signs didn't add up.

She's in the smartest part of town.

I mean, if I'm broke and depressed,
I'm not throwing tea parties,

I'm, you know, at home
in my pyjamas, crying,

like a normal person.

There were three British girls
there

and then we had Ghislaine,
the hostess,

and she's remarkably
only wearing her panties,

but altogether shocking.

It was white, frilly bra

and underwear.

And she had paired this outfit

with a massive amount
of very expensive jewellery

and a full face of make-up,

so it was clearly
an intentional outfit.

She drew attention to it repeatedly

but everyone was overlooking the
fact that it's completely abnormal.

None of us took our clothes off.

My takeaway was, I was right
the first time I met her.

The dynamic that she's always
looking for is to be in control,

to be the most important person
in the room.

And if she has to strip naked
to do it, she'll do it.

I didn't know Ghislaine until
the night she propositioned me.

In 1992, I ran into Ghislaine
at a party given by Joan Rivers

and I'm standing to the side
and Ghislaine comes over to me

and within really three minutes
what happened was so dazzling...

..in this one sentence, which is,

"You know, if you lose ten pounds,
I'll fuck you."

The thing about Ghislaine
propositioning me

when my wife was within
four to five feet away

is that it was brazen.

It was, as the Brits would say,
cheeky.

Talk about a power play,
that was a power play.

She was seducing me.

She knew how to work a room of guys.

She was putting it out there.

If it didn't work with me, it would
work on someone else, right?

I was just a notch on her belt.

It never happened to me before,
it never happened to me since.

It was a complete one-off.

But then so is Ghislaine.

There are many friends
and people out there who help.

You can never have too many
friends or too much help

in a situation like this.

It's always been a bit of a mystery
when Ghislaine Maxwell

first met Jeffrey Epstein and how,

but we know they got together
when she was in New York.

She met Jeffrey Epstein and became
involved in a relationship with him

very quickly after
her father's death.

Epstein was probably one of them
in those circles

who was respected most of all
for getting very rich

and that mattered to her.
I think she respected that.

And that was one of the things
that drew her to Epstein.

The only sin in New York
is not to have money.

Jeffrey could give really
one of the best five minutes

that you're going to find
at a party.

He listened to you,
he didn't look over your shoulder.

In the '80s, he told me
some stuff he did.

Like, sometimes he helped people
get money from African despots

who had stolen their money.

And sometimes he worked
with African despots

to help them keep the money
they had stolen.

And I thought, interesting guy.

I saw him again in his office,

which was large and empty.

If a computer was on his desk,
it was invisible.

He was a sort of lord and master.

And I said, "Jeffrey,
I need to see you work."

You know, Epstein as an enigma,
I mean, even close friends of his

had no idea where his money
came from.

My name is Leland Nally.

I'm a writer and I know
about Ghislaine Maxwell

from an article that I wrote
where I called everybody

in Epstein's little black book.

The book itself is Jeffrey Epstein's
personal contact book.

There's celebrities and scientists
and Nobel Prize winners

and influential businesspeople

and it's a very considerable
cross-section

of the global elite, essentially.

'The reason why I'm calling
is because you were listed

'as a contact in his contact book.'

'I was? Oh. I thought he knew
my telephone number by heart.'

Stuart Pivar was one of
the first people I talked to

who actually knew Epstein
in any sort of real way.

'Oh, really?
So you did know him well?'

'Well, Jeffrey Epstein was
my best pal for decades.'

Ghislaine came up firstly
in the actual text of the book,

and also about a quarter
of the people in the book,

I would estimate, knew her
but didn't know Epstein.

In trying to figure out
who Epstein was,

I couldn't help but figure out
who Ghislaine Maxwell was as well.

'He appointed me in charge
of Ghislaine while she was...

'Well, profoundly,
almost suicidally...

'..erm, depressed from the death
of her father.

'He didn't want her to kill herself

'so it was my job to
try to amuse her,

'to take her to dinner
and lunch and what have you

'until she finally came around.'

She said to someone I know well

that she felt that he'd saved her
after her father's death

and I think that was partly
emotional.

I'd like to think that I'll be able
to do something positive,

and I can't say what it is
right now

because I'm working on it,
or till I've done it.

I think she wanted a reason
to ground herself in New York,

in society, have a purpose there,
have a life there.

That relationship with
Jeffrey Epstein offered that

so she took that opportunity.

In 1993,

I had a strange little
very short PR job,

and that's why I spent three months

in the company of Jeffrey
and Ghislaine.

I had occasion to hear
out of her mouth

an effort that she was making

to convince me
that they were a couple.

But I knew that they weren't
because I could see with my own eyes

that there was no reciprocity
of romantic feelings.

There was no lingering looks,
there was no touching on the...

Nothing. She was an employee,
he was the boss.

Ghislaine's job was to bring
her father's contacts,

deliver them to Jeffrey,
in return for giving her the life

that she always thought
she would have,

lost, and was now replacing.

One day I say to her,

"Gosh, Ghislaine, how are you
keeping yourself so thin?"

And she says,
"Jeffrey likes his girls thin."

"How do you do it?" And she says,

"Well, did you ever see anyone
in a concentration camp

"with any weight on them?"

And she's laughing in her delivery.

And she says,
"Well, they didn't eat,

"so I call it the Nazi diet.
I just don't eat."

This was too important to her.

Him, the job -

everything was, like,
pathologically important.

Everything was for Jeffrey.

That's when you start to realise,

"Well, what are we
dealing with here?"

Because many people
have lost their money,

you know, become impoverished -
they don't all turn to crime.

It's not the next step.

Looking back and over the years,

I think there were signs
that things were happening.

She'd just make sure
that those girls were coming.

Come hell or high water,
she made sure he was happy.

She says, "Jeffrey has to have
three orgasms a day,"

and she says,
"I drive to the trailer parks."

She tells me that
she recruits three girls a day.

They began to assault me,

and they were both,
like, doing it together.

But Ghislaine seemed to
be the one...

..the only one enjoying it,
let me put it that way.

To me, she is the reason
that I was abused.

I think that I was very lost
for a long time,

and I've only just really
started to deal with it all.

I've kept it all secret
for 20 years.

20 years.

Can you tell me one person you know,
and take 20 people who know them

who don't give you different versions
of what they think of that person?

The much-anticipated trial of
accused Jeffrey Epstein-recruiter,

Ghislaine Maxwell,
is now under way here in New York.

We'd like some answers.

Let's get this show on the road.

The prosecution says Ghislaine
Maxwell lured young girls with money

and gifts and then subjected
them to sexual abuse.

Her defence argues she was the one
manipulated by Jeffrey Epstein

and ultimately is now the scapegoat
for Epstein's crimes.

What do you know, Ghislaine Maxwell?

What do you know?

Maxwell, the daughter of a British
media mogul, and Epstein's former

girlfriend, faces six criminal
counts, all focused on a decade-long

period between 1994 and 2004.

The prosecution case - likely
to hinge on the testimony of four

women, three of them will remain
anonymous.

A fourth woman, Annie Farmer,

an American,
has waived her anonymity.

It was definitely Ghislaine who
asked me first

about my sister, Annie.

In 1995, I was in Palm Beach,

and I was sitting outside by the
pool,

and Ghislaine was, you know, leaning
on a chaise

and she said,

"Oh, it's too bad,
Annie's not here with us.

"You know, it would be very nice
to have her here."

They groomed me for a year to get
to my sister,

to get to my mum, to
you know... That's what they did.

The fact that we believed
at the time that she was his wife

made us feel very safe.

We all believed that Annie
would be safe with a married couple.

Like, why wouldn't she be?

I saw her, I think, a couple
of years after her father's death

in New York at a party in the early
evening in the Four Seasons Hotel.

She still had her world in London,

but she had moved her social...

Her operational base was New York.

She was in a relationship
with Jeffrey Epstein by this time.

He was a very, sort of, active
giver of parties.

And Ghislaine could fit into that
life of the Upper East Side

in a heartbeat.

And I think, to her,
that was an achievement.

She was making it in New York.

Every time you went to a high-flying
showbiz party,

or a fashion show
party, she would be there.

It's like she was the party,

because she was so glamorous,

beautifully dressed.

She would be hosting whatever party
it was, even if she wasn't

the hostess,

and she would take over,

and she was the dominant person

in that party room.

She knew everybody and she could
work a room brilliantly.

And it was a very noticeable
difference,

from London - the early days,

to New York, where she became queen
of New York.

Being a young model, you get invited
to a lot of dinners or events

and, a lot of the times, the men
are older,

and want to be surrounded
by models.

That's sort of how it is.

I'm Lady Victoria Harvey and I first
met Ghislaine in the mid-nineties.

Most of the time I'd seen
her in London, then in New York,

then in LA.

For me, having a title,

being who I was, you know, that made
me valuable.

I was like an asset.

She seemed to, like, thrive
on introducing people

and hosting dinners.

One of the dinners I was at, you
know,

Bill Clinton was there.

He was the President of
the United States at the time.

It was Ghislaine who had invited me
to it.

It definitely showed her power
of being able to pull these people,

you know, into something
that was very intimate.

And it was like, "Wow, OK,
she's good.!"

And I think, Jeffrey just sort
of stepped back,

and kind
of let her do it.

They were like a team.

She was more social than him.

It's almost like she would bring
them in, you know, to the den,

and then he would do business
with them.

And she looked like she enjoyed it.

Basically everyone who knew

Epstein said something like,
"Oh, I always knew

"he was into young women.

"You know, I didn't really think
anything of it."

And, you know, if you're talking
about, like, New York

and the eighties and nineties,
like, rich billionaires,

being into young women is certainly,
like, not that weird,

by any stretch.

But almost everyone knew,
very specifically, that Epstein

was the guy who like, "Oh,
he likes young girls."

Hello? Is this Stuart? Yes.
Hey, how's it going?

I'm a writer. I'm doing a story on
Jeffrey Epstein.

I was wondering if maybe you wanted
to talk, if you had any interactions

with him or ever met him.

Jeffrey had no attention
span, whatever.

It was about three seconds.

He would interrupt the conversation,

and change it and say things like,

"What has that got to do with
pussy?"

Really? That was... Yeah, that was
his favourite expression.

In other words, it was a subject
changer, and it revealed

what was really in his mind.

And by chance had a partner in it,
Ghislaine,

who was a basket case. Right.

The story is more bizarre than
people begin to realise.

She arrived on these shores,

a depressed, dysfunctional wreck

from what happened to her,
on account of her father.

Right.

And the last thing that should
have happened to someone

like that is to fall into the care
of the likes of Jeffrey.

Sure.

He moulded her into

being complicit with his
aberrations.

I think it was a bit of an open
secret that he was seeing other

women, but she didn't walk away
from it,

and she wanted to remain
in his life.

And if he was going to see other
people,

then she would rather know

about it and, in a sense,
have some say in it.

So I think that was hidden
in plain sight.

I was told by a very close
friend of Ghislaine

that she'd been at an event
in New York,

and then Ghislaine says,

"I've got to go now, you know,
see you after the event,

"because I've got to go and get
some girls for Jeffrey."

It stuck in my mind afterwards,

that she thought it was her job.

So that it was like it was a duty.

And when do you stop and say,

"Hang on, this has gone from just a
bit questionable or even seedy,

"to something worse?"

I met her at a dinner in New York
sometime in the nineties.

It was a sort of well-heeled
Upper East Side dinner party.

She looked fantastic, and I hadn't
seen her for probably

nearly a decade, maybe.

She was exactly as she'd always
been.

She was incredibly friendly.

"Tell me all about you.

"What have you been doing?" She kept
going,

"What's it like in London?
What's happening in London?"

And I said, "What are you doing
here?

You know, why don't you come home?"

And she said, "Yeah."

She said, "Sometimes I think
of going home."

And then she said, "But I'm involved
in this relationship

"and it's really complicated."

And I said, "Why is it complicated?

She said, "It's just very
complicated."

"And I'm entangled and it's very
difficult to extract myself.

"And I know it's not good for me,

"but I don't feel like I can get
out right now."

I wonder if, one day,

the totally unacceptable blurred
with the almost acceptable.

And once she'd stepped over that
line,

there was no coming back.

When I first met Ghislaine, she
looked so elegant,

I could see why
people thought she was beautiful.

And that very quickly faded
when I got to know her.

My name is Maria Farmer.

I was an art student in Manhattan

in 1995, when I had the unfortunate

experience of connecting
with Jeffrey Epstein

and Ghislaine Maxwell.

The second time I met her,

she was being very foolish,

like, in a very high school way.

We sat down to dinner and she hands
around this brown bag,

and when we reached in there
were falsies in the brown bag,

and like condoms and weird
sex things.

And I was like, "I don't
want to play this game."

So immediately I knew she was weird.

I only worked for Jeffrey
and Ghislaine for a year.

I was just a student
and I didn't have any money.

I was living hand-to-mouth,
starving,

and so I was stuck with them.

And I worked at the door,

and all that it entailed was sitting

there with a large white book,

and everyone that came in and out

had to be signed in.

One time, Ghislaine walked
over and said, "Look at the pinhole

right next to you," and she's
pointing right next to my head.

And it was very disconcerting.

And so I asked Jeffrey,
and he took me in the room

where all those cameras led.

All the pictures were, like,
private, you know,

like, the restroom
or the bedroom or the wherever.

One of the most disturbing
things was that Ghislaine

would have all these young
teens coming and going,

and there were all girls,

and they were sometimes
in school uniforms.

I asked her what they were,
and she said, "Models

"for Victoria's Secret."

And after a while I said,

"They can't be models
because they don't have breasts."

And Victoria's Secret, like,
you know, they sell bras.

And she said, "No, no, no."

She said, "The limited corporation,
Maria has every kind

"of company involved.

"They have all kinds of models
for whatever

"that that they're selling.

"So there are children that model."

It just seemed very strange.

The only person that was scouting
models was Ghislaine,

and she was going out every day.

That was her full time job.

I mean, that's what she told me.

Ghislaine would go and get
people out of Central Park.

She would go around the time
that school was ending,

and she would do this from
the limousine, and she would do

this walking across to Central Park,

or walking by the schools.

She invited me into the car
with her and I saw her jump out,

give her phone number to a girl

who was definitely a high
schoolchild,

and
then run back with a number.

And then that child showed up,
you know, as one of the models.

So that's how I knew, you know,
she was doing it.

Sometimes there were parents
with them, but very rarely.

And I remember a little girl
walking downstairs crying

and she was wearing a uniform.

And I thought, ""hat happened?

And Ghislaine said, "She didn't get
the job."

Some people aren't cut out
for modelling, you know?

And I'm like, "Whoa, she's a kid."

And I was like, "I don't like this
job." You know,

I didn't know what was going on.
I just didn't like it.

The energy was really bad.

One day, I got a phone call
from Ghislaine Maxwell's office

asking me if I would take
a meeting with Ghislaine.

I had just published a book
which I called Royal Blue,

and it was a semi-autobiographical
story of my childhood.

I don't believe she read the book.

I think she read the reviews.

I go in and she launches
right into it and she says,

"I want my royal blue.

"I want you to ghost-write it."

And then she starts pitching me.

She says, "I want you to live with
me for a year, and get to know

"everything and see everything.

"You're going to meet everyone."

And then she finishes up with,

"I'm going to give you a lot of
money."

And I do not say anything.

I don't look jubilant.

Now she changes tack completely.

She starts to beg and she says,

"Please, you have to write this book

"for me, because I want Jeffrey
to marry me."

She says, "I need Jeffrey
to see me in a different light."

And she says this extraordinary
thing to me.

She says, "Jeffrey has to have three
orgasms a day,

"and it's been determined
by the best doctors in the world.

"And I help him because I cannot
keep up with his libido."

She tells me that she recruits three
girls a day.

And she says, "What I do is, when
we're in Palm Beach,

"I get in my car and I drive to the
trailer parks,

"and I look for Jeffrey's type.

"And when I see what I'm looking
for, I approach.

"I make a deal.

"I bring them home."

It was like, you're ordering
in food and then you order

a new food the next.

It was just offensive.

I'm disgusted with her.

And so I now lose my temper,

which I can do.

And I say to her, "What are you
talking about?

"Who are these girls?"

And she says to me, "They
are nothing.

"They are trash."

She treated us like useless
peasants.

That's how she spoke to people
that she deemed beneath her.

And it was shocking.

You know, I was called a nobody.

And it was so strange
because there was this part of me

that admired them so much.

Ghislaine knocked on the door
and she was in her bathrobe,

and it wasn't even properly tied
and I felt uncomfortable.

So she started walking me
down the hallway to a room

I wasn't allowed to go to.

I was told - very strict rules - not
to even ever go in this one room.

It was Jeffrey's room there,

and I got this really bad feeling.

I walked in and I just knew.

Ghislaine instructs me to rub his
feet, and I'm like, you know?

And I was not good at it on purpose.

And Jeffrey said, "You know,
sit up here."

And I sat between them and I felt

really uncomfortable, obviously,

but I thought, "Well, maybe it's not
going to be something bad, you know,

"they're just so weird anyway.

"Maybe this is part of it."

But no, it was something
bad,

and they began to assault me,

and they were both, like, doing
it together.

It became like this mechanical,
you know, assault.

But Ghislaine seemed to be the
one...

The only one enjoying it, let me put
that way.

Because I was crying and she was
like rubbing my tear

and wiping my hand, and loving
all over me.

And I, at some point,

just kind
of forced myself up and rolled up

and got up, and just ran
out of the room.

And I pushed this piece
of furniture up against the door.

Just waited all night until
they left that morning around eight.

When I got home, the phone
rang and it was Ghislaine.

And I'd been there maybe
just like an hour.

And she said, "Hey, Maria,
what do you want?"

So I said, "I'm going to the
police."

When I called the FBI to report it,
I made Ghislaine Maxwell's

role very clear.

So they have known what role
Ghislaine Maxwell played since 1996

when I told them, and I'm so angry
because they allowed it to exist

for 26 years, they created
most of these victims

you're hearing from today.

Almost all of them happened
after my report.

My name is David Boles.
I'm a lawyer.

I represent a number
of the survivors

of Ms Maxwell and Mr Epstein.

I think one of the great tragedies
of this story is what happened

or more accurately, what didn't
happen,

when Maria Farmer was abused.

Nobody paid attention.

It was one young girl's
word

against rich,
powerful, connected people.

If the prosecutors had done
their job in the 1990s,

this could have been stopped.

Ended.

Without the hundreds of young girls

who were then going to be abused

over the next two decades.

Dozens, hundreds of young girls'
lives

could have been saved.

When I was 22 years old,
I was in massage therapy school.

There was a girl who told me
that there was someone hiring

for a position, travelling the
world,

in a private jet with private chefs

as a massage therapist.

And that sounded like a wonderful
opportunity.

Within a couple of weeks,
I had travel arrangements to fly

to New York City from Los Angeles.

I was excited.

I was a little nervous, of course.

I had a time and an address
to go meet, you know, Miss Maxwell.

I walk in and the whole
place is stunning.

And I was asked to go up the stairs,

and at the top of the stairs there's

a butler standing there
holding a silver tray.

I mean, I kind of laughed to myself
a bit because, "This is not normal.

"This is, like, movie type stuff."

A few moments later, Miss Maxwell

comes out in a white bathrobe.

She was asking me all types
of questions about myself,

and we spoke about things
like our birthdays, you know,

hers being the 25th of December,
mine being the 26th of December.

And what that meant to us
growing up.

I spoke about my dad
to her,

and she spoke
about her dad to me.

There was never a disconnect
in our conversation

and I just thought,
"How incredible is this?"

Even though I was in this home that
was beautiful, with this educated

woman, successful woman,
there was never a time that I felt

like I didn't belong there.

I felt connected to this woman,

in a sense that I didn't feel
like I was any different from her.

After the massage, she said,
"I want you to go now

"meet with my partner, Jeffrey, for
another portion of the interview."

And she says to me directly,
she said,

"Make sure you give Jeffrey

"what he wants, because Jeffrey
always gets what he wants."

I leave Ghislaine's townhouse
with the sense of accomplishment

and confidence and, like, it
couldn't have gone any better.

This was going to be my future.

I walked to Jeffrey's home.

I was led in.

And Jeffrey's like, "Let's
go to my office."

So...

I'm sitting there on the couch,

and he put his foot up on my leg

and asked me for a foot massage.

I didn't know that there was going
to be a massage involved.

But nonetheless, I start
working on his foot.

He's pushing his foot further
and further up my leg to the point

where it's pressing into my body
in very inappropriate ways.

So I got up and he's, you know,
right behind me,

and he assaulted me there.

I took off down the stairs.

And I walked out the door.

I didn't look up the whole way.

It's like I could... Every
seam in the sidewalk.

I was just, like, looking
at seam after seam after seam.

And I walked straight back, you
know, to where I was staying.

Everybody wants to talk
about what happened.

"How did he abuse you?
What did he do?"

And it's not focused on Ghislaine.

It's focused on him.

And that frustrates me.

I was faced with the absolute
betrayal of this woman.

I felt so connected to Ghislaine,

in that short amount of time
in her home.

The betrayal was just so deep,

because she got me there.

She got me to the point of abuse.

She groomed me to walk myself
to the home of a predator willingly.

She was beyond a cog
in the wheel of it.

She facilitated it.

She made the network happen.

I think the idea that, you know,

Epstein and Ghislaine were as rich
and glamorous as they were,

people treat them enormously
different than any other

kind of person who would do
something like this.

I definitely encountered people
close to him who were always,

like, finding increasingly
bizarre ways

to try to rationalise, you know,
Epstein's behaviour.

Jeffrey had a severe case of what's
called satyriasis, the male

counterpoint, counterpart
of nymphomania,

which he could not control.

What was his relationship to...?

Look, probably a lot of men have
that, for all I know,

except very few of them have the
money to...

Let's say to treat themselves to
sex three

times a day with young girls.

And if there was only one
of them who did it, no-one

would have noticed. Except he made
an industry out of it.

And why did he make an industry
out of it?

Because Jeffrey was a very,
very, very sick man.

So were you ever around
for any instances of these?

No, I never saw him fool around.

In fact, Jeffrey was a very,
very close friend of mine.

Yeah. And he shielded me.

I never saw what he did
until finally I did notice certain

things, and that was the end
of me having to do with him.

He never invited me to the Isle
of Babes. OK.

Luckily. I never even
knew it was even there.

Pulling up on the boat
to the island.

I just remember it being just really
magical and so beautiful.

And it's like, "Wow, how
could someone live here?"

And felt kind of special
that we were going.

And of course, there was young,
beautiful people there.

I just thought, you know,

"It's just like a getaway and a fun
place to go to."

But when we left there,

it just was a place that I never

really wanted to return to,

and I just couldn't wait to get, you
know, away.

In 1998, there was a job advertised
for a management couple

for an island in the Caribbean.

And then from my interviews
all the way through to the end,

there were always women around.

I'm Miles Alexander and this is
Cathy, my wife of 30-odd years.

I was employed as the island
manager and Kathy was employed

as the housekeeping manager.

Ms Maxwell did explain
that there would be a lot

of women around.

She used to refer to it as the bees
around the honeypot.

She said, "You'll see lots of bees
around the honeypot,

"but I'm the Queen Bee.
Always remember that."

We've never forgotten.
We've never forgotten that.

Shall we have a look at some

Yeah, that's where we used to live.

1999.

If you remember, we arrive.

That's the complex at the top,

with the master bedroom down there.

The great room, kitchen and office.

And the three little buildings.

We had no real beaches,
so we had to create beaches.

Ultimately, he wanted to see
a view of another island.

So we started digging
the mountain away.

Taking the whole mountain away.

So he could see what was called
Dog Island at the time.

There's our kitchen and there's me
baking, probably.

Miss Maxwell as employer
was very demanding.

She basically took her pound
of flesh, eh?

Yeah, we used to call her Hurricane
Maxwell. Sorry, Miss Maxwell.

She would arrive, and all sorts
of tranquillity

on the island would erupt.

She used to run around fixing
things, making sure everything

was perfect for Mr Epstein.

That was the whole point
of her being there, to make sure

Epstein had everything he ever
wanted. Wanted.

We knew they were going to be girls.

And then one day I'm told
to go and serve tea.

And I walked out to the pool,
with this big tray of tea

and there's Victoria's Secret
model-type people

lying around with no clothes on,

because they didn't come down with
the costumes.

So I went back to Cathy and I said,

"You're doing this, I'm not doing
this."

They'll all be lying there with
next to nothing on.

You got quite complacent about it.

You know, you ask them, "What do you
do?" "I'm an estate agent."

"What do you do?" "I'm a model. I'm
a... But they were just there for

him, basically. .."I'm a student." I
don't know.

If he wanted to go swimming,

he took the girls with him.
They'd go off to the beach.

Yeah, off to the beach.
So they were companions.

My name is Gretchen Rhodes.

I am a professional singer,

and I was doing massage therapy

for 20-something years.

I worked on Little St James
from 2001 to 2006.

So this is the first time in 20
years that I have talked

about this in a public space.

And in my silence,

I was starting
to feel physically sick

by not acknowledging it.

I met Ms Maxwell when she came
into the Grapevine Salon and Spa

where I was working as a massage
therapist.

She made a beeline towards me
when she saw me, and asked me

if I would want to come
and do massage for her.

And I said, "We
have a receptionist here.

"You can go ahead and ask
the receptionist to book

"an appointment for you."

And she said, "No, no, no, I don't
want to I don't want to do that.

"I want you to come and work for
me," and handed me her card.

She never came into the spa,
just looking for an amazing massage.

It was just her looking
for something...

..else.

Even though I said no.

She came back a couple more times
throughout the next couple of weeks.

She was firmly persistent,

to put it in a very kind way.

I could say "hound" because it kind
of did feel like that as well.

My feelings were saying,
you know, like, "stay away."

Like, just go
about what you're doing.

But my brain was telling me,
"But look at this person.

"She's very well coifed.

"She's like, put herself
together very well.

"She's very well mannered.
She's articulate.

"Why would you not want to go
along with

"what she's asking you to do?"

When I was first picked
up by this boat on Saint John,

to be taken to Little Saint James.

It felt exciting.
It's like, "Wow, this is so...

"You know, Lifestyles of the Rich
and Famous.

"How lucky am I to be able
to do this?

"How lovely for me."

I was told by Ms Maxwell that this
is a speak-when-spoken-to situation.

Don't ask questions.

If you see anything, you're going
to keep it to yourself

or hear anything.

you're going to keep it to yourself.

And also, like, in a very, like,

smile and, "This is how it's going
to be."

And so, you know...

We had a nucleus
of sorts from St Thomas and St John,

that used to be - we had to go
fetch and bring back.

Ms Maxwell would be the first person
to test the masseuse, to make sure

that the massage that he was due
to have would be a good massage,

that type of thing.

Let me try and phrase
that so you'd understand.

I think she got into a situation

where she had to find massage
therapists for him,

and the younger the better.

And I got asked to find massage
therapists and they were always

too old, so she had to go
and find somebody young.

And I think in a way, it felt
uncomfortable that she was looking

for these young massage therapists.

She just made sure that he got
his massages,

come hell or high water.

She made sure he was happy.

Miles and Cathy were the ones
that called me up to do massage.

Sitting in the kitchen with them
waiting.

And then they would get the call
to do massage

with Miss Maxwell
or with Jeffrey.

Initially, when I first
got to Little St James,

I was massaging Ms Maxwell
herself,

and that lasted for three
or four months

somewhere in there.

Sometimes,

Ms Maxwell would have me do a
tandem massage,

or teach another girl

that was there how to do massage.

And finally, when she decided
that I was

ready or fit, or I feel

like now that I had gotten
her trust...

..then I was allowed to -
"allowed to"

massage Jeffrey himself.

Ms Maxwell walked me down to his
room for the first time

and then again explained,
"Whatever happens

"during the massage, you keep
to yourself."

The massage table was already
set up.

He came in, she took off her shirt.

She took off her bra.
She took off her pants.

I was trying not to look,
but it's kind of like, all right

here, you know, in peripheral
vision.

And then she got redressed
and just left like it was nothing.

I was kind of taken aback
by everything. He just laid down.

And I did a normal massage,
just the normal massage.

I don't know why I had that uneasy
feeling, thinking like, "OK, great.

"I've like... This is really easy
money. Fantastic for me."

He also had this thing about making
people's dreams come true.

He said that was his thing.

He asked me, "What's your dream?
What is your passion?"

And I said, "Music."
He's like, "OK, great."

He's like, "I'll fly
you up to New York and I'll set

"you up a couple of meetings
with EMI and Universal."

On the way back down, we flew
in his private jet with all

of these scientists that he was
hosting on the island.

Ms Maxwell was on that plane,

and we were taken back to the
Caribbean, and I was made

to give Jeffrey a massage.

Where I had to...

..massage his nipples
while he masturbated.

It was just like...

Taken aback, you know, like,

"What the fuck is happening right
now?

"What is happening?
Just, like, just look away.

"Like, you know, just look away."

I just wasn't looking at his face.

I was looking, like, beyond him.
Just...

Trying to separate myself, or...

..take myself out of my body.

That was my payment for having been
flown up to New York and given

these opportunities like such...
On such a high

and then just such a low.

It was just this constant
kind of roller-coaster.

And I always asked myself,

and have asked myself for the last
20 years,

why I didn't just jump off of the
roller-coaster.

I don't even... I don't know
if I have an answer.

These people made the weirdest
things so normal and normalised.

And nothing was normal.

And...

It was all horrible and weird,

and then it wasn't.

And then he was a charming,
kind, nice person.

And so was she.

Maybe not kind.

There was never a kind look behind
her eye.

It... Just a charming, ever
so slightly calculated one.

She led me into that situation,

knowing full well that it's not

a normal situation to put somebody
else, but doing it anyway.

To me, she is the reason
that I was abused.

These allegations in the press
of women

trying to escape the island, swim
away from the island.

Come crying to Cathy and myself
in the kitchen to say,

"Please help us.
We need to get off the island.

"My passports have been stolen
or taken away from us."

None of that happened.

None of those girls came in crying.
I don't understand it.

The only person who ever cried was

somebody who came to give
him a massage and...

Just said, "Look, I want to go
home." And that was all.

But I don't know what happened
in the room.

People left the island
very suddenly, yes.

There could have been women that had

been assaulted or hurt or...

We can't... Wouldn't go down that
road because we weren't...

We've got no evidence whatsoever.

No. So. But people left and came...

So maybe...

I wouldn't even go down that route
because we can't say for sure.

I've never saw anybody leave
the island... In tears. ..in tears.

Where there's smoke, there's fire.

But we didn't see it, and we weren't
involved any of it.

She was trying to please
the man, and at her detriment.

That's basically what she did.

She wanted to make sure he was
happy,

whether she did it illegally
or whatever.

It's very easy to bury one's
head in the sand.

I've done it for the last 20
years of not acknowledging.

I didn't feel like I could tell
anybody, because I wasn't worthy

enough to tell anybody.

But I honestly think that it was
totally conceivable

that Miles and Cathy didn't know it
was happening, because I didn't know

anything that was happening
with anybody else.

Everything was kept behind
closed doors.

I think that I was very lost
for a long time,

and I've only just really started to
deal with it all.

I've kept it all secret
for 20 years.

20 years.

Epstein bought this island
in the US Virgin Island.

And he built, on that island,
a camp for sex trafficking.

A sex trafficking palace,

if you will, with a gold dome

with places scattered along
the beach.

And there were always a lot
of young girls there.

Of the slightly more than dozen
women that we represent,

about half of them, probably, were
on the island.

It was a place where he would go
to abuse young girls.

But it was also a place
where he would entertain,

and cultivate rich and powerful,

and politically connected figures.

We had a lot of guests that came
to the island

at the invitation of Mr Epstein.

Whether they were industrialists,
businesspeople,

celebrity type people,

royalty.

Prince Andrew was there.

He came on a few times.

The first time was by himself

and then twice with Ms Maxwell.

They were very good friends.
Very good friends.

You could see it. They had an
absolute ball.

They used to laugh... Laugh. ..and
enjoy themselves.

Go swimming, go playing
on the jet skis.

Do all sorts of things. Tease each
other. Yeah. Have fun.

And it was loud.

We could hear it. Having fun.

They just enjoyed themselves.
And he was so relaxed.

He just opened the door
to the kitchen and come in and say,

"All right, what can we eat?"

It was like a home in many ways.

No, it was, he was... I'd say their
relationship was really close.

They were really close.

And would Prince Andrew
get massages as well?

I don't think so. Did he?

I can't remember. I can't remember.

No, to be honest with you, I can't.

When he was on his own, no.
When he was on his own, no.

I don't think he did.

But you never know, because...
We don't know what, you know?

..we weren't privy to see...

to see any of... any of the
other side of

Mr Epstein, so...

If you were to say it like
that.

Yeah. I don't know how to say it.

What stays inside stays inside.

I saw Ghislaine with Prince Andrew
at Ascot in the royal enclosure.

I used to go to Ascot every year.

She was almost deferring
to him, and looking at him

as though he was the most
important person there.

I called over to Ghislaine.

"Hi, Ghislaine, it's me."

Nothing - complete blank.

She was just so focused
on Prince Andrew,

that nobody else mattered.

She decided that there were bigger
fish in her pond

than my little pond.

So she decided, probably,
to ignore me.

I thought,

"That's not very nice to be treated
that way," especially after the way

that I used to look after her.

I was disappointed.

I definitely saw that she was
a powerful woman in society.

She was amongst all the celebrities
and very important people

on the social scene in New York.

and I'm a model scout and manager.

The first time I met Ghislaine
was at a dinner party

at Jeffrey Epstein's home

on the Upper East Side.

She had that little sparkle
in her eye.

So you're kind of like...

Lesbian thing goes up where you're
like, "Hmm" about her.

There were tonnes of older men
there that night,

and she was the only, like, lady
among them.

I saw a lot of younger women
coming and going that night.

I believe all over 18. They were
all introduced to Ghislaine,

If they didn't know her, and
introduced to the other men there.

A few weeks or months later,

I was hanging out with another
group of girlfriends.

We went to a party in Soho.

Naomi Campbell was there,
Woody Harrelson and some other

celebrities, and Ghislaine was there
that night with Mick Jagger.

I said hello to Ghislaine,
and she introduced me

and my girlfriends to Mick Jagger
that night.

So Jeffrey is the one, a few days
after, who had called me to meet

with Mick Jagger, like he was
having a dinner, and that Mick

had requested that myself and some
girlfriends,

the same girlfriends
would go meet him for dinner.

And I had said, "Well, what does
he want?"

He was... "Well, you know."

"He said, "Oh, well, Ghislaine
is going to be there."

And he said that she was his best
friend and that he trusted her.

And I said, "Well, I don't
really trust her."

She's a little creepy.

I didn't think anything of their odd
relationship

because the modelling
and acting world

has a mist of sexuality all
throughout it.

When you are in that business,

you deal with those kinds of things.

After that, I started feeling,
"Well, I'm not really your friend.

"You know, if you're pushing me to
go meet with these older men."

And as you like, witness
their relationship

and as your friends get to know
them, then you start to realise

she's 100% in it as much as he is.

Having the woman present makes
it seems like,

"Oh, OK, well, nothing
super bad is going to happen to me

"because she's here," you know?

I think that was a very confusing
thing, always having her there.

I don't think he could have had
the same web of operation

that was going on without this, you
know, beautiful woman helping him.

Looking back, and over the years,
I think there were signs

that things were happening.

And it reminds me there's
a great line in Edith Wharton

in her novel, The Age of Innocence.

The main character says, "Does
nobody want to know the truth here?"

What she's shocked by is how much
people will continue and not notice

things they don't want to see.

This, to me, was an equivalent.

"Does nobody round here want to know
the truth?"

And the fact is probably not.
Not if the party is good.

I drove her home and dropped
her off in front of her townhouse.

And then she made
this astonishing offer.

If you come in and fuck me,

I will tell you the secrets
of my father.

She slams her fist on my conference
room table,

and my court reporter

looked at me and said,
"I'm so scared."

in the game was, she's evil.

in the sex trafficking trial
of Jeffrey Epstein's

companion, Ghislaine Maxwell.

The first of Ghislaine Maxwell's
four accusers testifying

under the pseudonym Jane,

graphically described the first time

Jeffrey Epstein sexually abused her.

Some of the details are absolutely
harrowing.

Maxwell, she says, fondled
her breasts.

Jeffrey Epstein sexually
assaulted her with sex toys

when she was 14 years old.

It's a trial a quarter century
in the making.

And of course, since that time,
the victims have been looking

for a reckoning.

I've been working with the survivors
of Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine

Maxwell for about seven years now.

I think, for any of the women
who are being called to testify,

there's a lot of anxiety
with having to face your abuser

in a court of law.

There will be a lot of relief
in this as well,

because they'll have the opportunity
to talk to the jurors

about what happened to them.

There's been a lot of speculation
about why it took so long

for Maxwell to be held accountable.

That involves power and privilege,

in a way that was unique
to this circumstance.

There's so many of us
that have walked around feeling

like we don't have the right
to speak up for ourselves.

I definitely need to be here
to show her that everything

that she's taken from me,

I'm taking it all back.

It has to be the turning point,

that society as a whole puts

that stake in the ground,

draws that line, and says,

"You cannot get away with these
things

"just because of who you are,
and how much money you have."

My name is Spencer Kuvin.

I'm an attorney practising
in West Palm Beach, Florida.

I represented one of the first young
victims to come forward

here in Palm Beach County
against Mr Epstein.

Through that process, we began
to understand the full

breadth of Mr Epstein's sexual
conspiracy,

and the organisation
which involved Maxwell,

as well as many of the other young
girls that she had trained.

These were young girls, some of them
as young as 14 years old,

who did not have the wherewithal
to understand

what they were getting
themselves into.

The premise to be searched
a two-storey single-family residence

occupied or under the control
of Jeffrey Epstein,

white male, date of birth 1/20/53.

The first young lady that
I represented never specifically

mentioned Maxwell, but there was
this older British distinguished

lady behind the scenes.

They didn't know who she was.

She was answering the door.

She was escorting people through.

She was telling them, "Oh, go
up there, go into that room" or,

"go into the kitchen."

When my clients visited,
they would frequently see pictures

of Ghislaine Maxwell with very
famous individuals,

and it was very clear she was very
wealthy and powerful.

But at the beginning, we weren't
really focused on her, so we never

learned the full breadth of her part
in this, until much later on.

We were focused on Epstein.

Later, during the investigation,
when interviewing

and conducting the deposition,

the name Maxwell would come
up repeatedly.

Ghislaine Maxwell was a lot
more than just someone who stayed

in a room at the Palm Beach mansion.

She was directing the activities
that were going on there.

What we came to learn is that by
the time of this investigation,

Maxwell had stepped away
from the direct recruitment

of young girls.
She had trained primary recruiters.

Those primary recruiters
then would train local recruiters,

to get girls to come over
to the house.

This sexual pyramid scheme,
really had Ghislaine Maxwell

at the top.

We, as attorneys, wanted to talk
to her.

We knew that she was jet
setting across the world.

We knew that she could fly to France
or Virgin Islands at any moment.

We had heard that she was at some
kind of a private benefit event

up in New York at one point.

So we had hired processed servers
to go and try and serve her.

Unfortunately, that ended
up in a failure.

They couldn't get in and get
her served, so we were never able

to issue a subpoena to her at
the time because she had essentially

disappeared in the wind.

I went down to tidy his room
and there on his dresser

was the arrest warrant,

and he said it was for solicitation
of a minor

for prostitution, hey? Something
like that. Something like that.

In all honesty, I was shocked.
No, we were shocked.

And we were both shocked.

The way it was explained to us,

it was basically a slap on the
wrist - fine, like a traffic fine -

that they're charging him with,
which seemed like it.

So I said, "Well, just pay the fine
and get it over done with,

"and get it out of the news, get
everything sorted."

At that point of the relationship
between the two of them, I think

it was pretty antagonistic
at points.

He actually told us that she'd gone.

Yeah, one day, she said...

He walked into the kitchen.

He said, "It's over."

I actually feel quite sorry for him,
at the time.

It was a bit traumatic. Traumatic.

We had a couple of fighting matches.

I wouldn't go too deep into that.

No, no, which is understandable.

So you could see this relationship

was moving in a different
direction, yeah.

Ms Maxwell was not around for quite
a while.

She got involved with a man that
does computers,

as far as I remember.

She was completely just out of
the whole... Out of the loop.

Out of the loop. So you could see

she'd started a new life for
herself,

which I thought was good
for her, you know?

The relationship between Epstein
and Maxwell,

who was dominant,

who was subservient,

how many of the strategies and
tactics

for recruiting and grooming came
from Maxwell and how much

came from Epstein?

We'll never probably know
completely.

But what we do know is that Maxwell
bears responsibility not only

for the young women and girls
who she personally recruited,

but also for her role in the overall
enterprise, where she would recruit

somebody to recruit somebody else,
to recruit somebody else,

to recruit somebody else.

I think that one of the cruellest
things that Epstein and Maxwell

did is to induce, coerce these young
girls to bring in other young girls.

This has been a really big journey
for me to actually get to that point

where I'm not in denial any more.

And I can say,
"Yeah, I was abused too."

I had only met Jeffrey pretty
briefly before someone was sent

to our room to bring us
there for a massage.

And so I just thought,

"OK, well, this is kind of weird,

"but I trust the girl that brought
me."

So, yeah, we went to his room
and I realised at that time

that the girl that brought me there,
she had done this before.

So she was very comfortable
and she was massaging him and I kind

of just took her lead.

And then pretty quickly afterwards,

you know, when Jeffrey started

touching me inappropriately,

and that's, like, when the abuse
happened.

I was really confused
about what happened.

I just, like, realised maybe that's
why she brought me there,

was kind
of to lure me to him.

And she was the one who got
paid for bringing me.

She made it seems like it was, like,
no big deal at all.

It was hard for me to deal
with it for many years after that.

And then hearing so many other women
have the exact same story of another

young person, another young woman

bringing them to Jeffrey
for a massage,

but then getting
sexually abused.

And then every time I hear it,
I'm just, like, thinking,

"That was me. That was me."

I'm heading to the Ghislaine Maxwell
trial.

This is just like another step
for me, just to realise and kind

of move on and heal.

This whole nightmare never
would have happened

if it wasn't for Ghislaine.

The woman who brought me
to Jeffrey's Island

was recruited by her.

There were so many people
that she brought

that brought others,

that brought others.

So it's just all these,
like, layers.

It's scary that I fit into that
story somehow.

That's the way pyramid schemes work.

That's the way enterprises
of this scope and scale work.

That was part of the power.

Part of the reason why it was able
to recruit

not just a handful

of young girls, but dozens,
hundreds of young girls.

There was no-one else

in the pyramid who had her position,

no-one else who had her wealth,
her status, no-one else did.

Epstein gave $30 Million to.

So if you put Epstein at the top
of the pyramid,

Maxwell's right
next to him.

And the only question is,

"Is she right next to him at the
same level,

"or is she right next to him at the
level immediately below him?"

Jeffrey Epstein's personal 727
aircraft

arrived at PBIA from Newark
at 5:00pm.

The investor, travelling
with a small entourage, was met

at the private Galaxy Aviation.

Jeffrey Epstein went to jail
just before ten this morning.

He pleaded guilty in open court.

He agreed to serve a total of 18
months in a Palm Beach detention

facility, 12 for felony solicitation
of prostitutes, and an additional

six for procuring persons
under 18 for prostitution.

The guilty plea and deal
end a years-long process

that could have sent Epstein
to jail for 15 years.

I couldn't believe that he got
this sweetheart deal.

The federal government interviewed
at least 40 young girls,

but for some reason the government
decided that they were going to use

one case as the case,

that they would convict him
of.

They're letting them out during the
day to walk

around and have lunch
and have massages at his office.

He got out after only one year.

A few steps, a smile and a wave
to the deputy at the door.

We watched Jeffrey Epstein walk
out of jail,

but only his attorneys
heard from him.

He's very happy that his jail
sentence is over, and he can begin

a new chapter in his life.

They entered into what's called
a non-prosecution agreement,

that prevented any further
prosecution of not just Jeffrey

Epstein, but also any others
who may have been involved.

Maxwell is not mentioned
and we have to assume

that that was intentional.

Jeffrey probably told her,
"Just disappear. Go away.

"Stay away from all of this
and don't worry about it.

"I'll take care of it."

The non-prosecution agreement
should never have let people

like Maxwell walk.

I think it led to a sense
of invulnerability,

and it led to a sense of confidence
that having beat that, she was free.

We're always looking for what we can
do, what can make a difference.

If the United Nations create a
stand-alone ocean development goal

that is a needle-mover,
that will make new laws,

new governance and a new way
of looking at the ocean.

And that is what will change
the world.

about the most was,

of course, the ocean.

I mean, in many ways, the ocean
became, like, her baby.

her off in front of her townhouse,

and then she made

She says to me, "If you come

I was completely speechless,

and I came up with a very lame
excuse,

that I needed to go home
and walk the dog.

And she knew it was a kind of a BS
excuse, but she gave me a kiss

on the cheek and she said,
"You know, hope to see you soon."

It's kind of like by day she's very,
very involved in trying

to save the oceans and fix
the world.

But by night, it's like turning
into Dracula or something.

It was like a switch.

I just came back from Haiti,

where children are trafficked

for sex and I wanted to open
the safe haven, if we can say,

to help those kids.

And my friend decided to have a
fundraising event for that.

I hear that Ghislaine Maxwell came.

I don't know why
she was in the picture.

I did not even know who she was.

I guess it's because the French
ambassador

was there and she wanted to look
good.

She was in the picture
and then she left.

I know one thing.

That woman you're talking about,

Maxwell, did not give a cent.

The way she was able to manipulate
the media

to think of her as a - quote -
"environmentalist"

as opposed to a sex trafficker,

probably continued to contribute to
her sense of being above the law,

of being invulnerable.

I think it led her to be, perhaps,
careless.

It may have contributed
to her ultimate undoing.

Emotions running high
in the Ghislaine Maxwell trial.

A tearful accuser says she was 14
when Maxwell

told her she had a great body
for Jeffrey Epstein and his friends.

We're up to our third accuser.

And her name is Carolyn.

She is testifying under her first
name,

and she is the second accuser

to allege that Ghislaine Maxwell
had fondled her breasts

when she was 14 years old.

She said she was brought
in to Epstein's orbit

via Virginia Giuffre Roberts,

who was a very key figure

in the whole Ghislaine Maxwell saga.

Virginia was one of the first
people, if not the first person,

to come forward with the evidence
that not only were Epstein

and Maxwell abusing young women
themselves, but they were actually

trafficking young women
to other men.

The highest profile person
that Virginia identified

as someone to whom she was
trafficked by Epstein and Maxwell

was Prince Andrew.

Ghislaine woke me up in the morning,
excited, and she said,

"You're going to meet a prince
today."

Ghislaine said, "He's coming back
to the house and I want you to do

"for him what you do for Epstein."

The abuse went on for...

A little bit in the bathroom
and then it continued to the bedroom

and he wasn't rude or anything
about it.

He said, you know, "Thank you."

My first reaction was,
"Did this really happen?"

You know, "Is it really true?"

To hear that...

..a member of the royal family,
you know,

a prince of England,

was engaged in that conduct,

was something that I found
surprising, shocking, disturbing.

Sex trafficking tends
to be something that you associate

with third world countries.

It's not something that you think
happens in the United States,

in the United Kingdom.

She said she had sex with you three
times.

Once in a London house when she was
trafficked to you,

in Maxwell's house. Yes.

Once in New York, a month
or so later at Epstein's mansion.

And once on his private
island in a group of seven

or eight other girls.

No.

She says she dined with you,

danced with you at Tramp
Nightclub in London.

She went on to have sex
with you in a house in Belgravia

belonging to Ghislaine Maxwell,
your friend.

Your response?

I have no recollection of ever
meeting this lady.

I talked to my partner, David Boies,

and he said, "I have this new case

"that's come in that I think
really is suited

"for you because of the work
you've done in foster care

"and with sex trafficking victims."

I went to New York and I met
with Virginia.

And within moments of that meeting,

my life really turned upside
down in many ways.

Virginia made public that Maxwell
had been involved at the head

of the sex trafficking scheme,
along with Epstein.

Can I ask you about the all
the allegations

that have come out, Ghislaine?

You've got no comment at all?

I've made a statement.

Then Maxwell came forward and made
the statement that Virginia's claims

were, quote, "obvious lies."

That gave us the hook to be able to
sue Maxwell for defamation.

And that really started the journey
in being able to hold Maxwell

accountable for the crimes
she committed.

We were a tight female team
and we just dug into it.

We pieced together the flight logs
in a way that no-one ever

had before, to really map that out
and understand the trafficking

scheme as a whole.

We had the police reports
from the 2005 investigation

in Florida that showed Maxwell,

at the centrepiece of this, helping

arrange the girls being very active
there, despite her claims

that she was not.

We spoke to many, many survivors
of Epstein and Maxwell's abuse.

Some of those survivors would say,
"I can't give you any information.

"I'm too scared."

It was a very scary time period.

I myself had threats
and I was scared at times.

I also had people following me.

As you can imagine, there
are incredibly powerful people

who are involved in this sex
trafficking scheme.

They certainly didn't like that.

I was turning over stones,
finding out more information.

Maxwell's deposition is significant
because it's really the only

document we have that shows
testimony she is giving

about the sexual trafficking scheme.

One of the things that stood
out to me right away

was how obstructionist Maxwell
was going to be.

I asked her a pretty simple
question.

So, Miss Maxwell, when did
you first recruit a female

to work for Mr Epstein?

She said, "I don't understand
what you mean by female.

"I don't understand what you mean
by recruit.

"Please be more specific and clear."

So that just shows you how difficult
she was willing to make

that deposition, how she was
going to stop at nothing,

to not give information.

Maxwell definitely had an air

I can describe it.

"How dare you bring me into
a conference room

"and ask me questions?

"I know presidents, I know princes,
and I should not be bothered

"with these kinds of allegations."

There was another significant moment
in the deposition where she actually

gets so frustrated with me
and so angry that she slams her fist

on my conference room table,

causing my court reporter's

stenographer machine to fall over.

And my court reporter looked at me
and said, "I'm so scared."

In that moment, I realised
what the women that I represent

have gone through, and to see
how willing she was to come forward

in that environment and attack,
at this level,

just confirmed everything
that I knew about her.

In the final analysis, they paid
a lot of money to resolve it.

The result of the defamation case
was very important to Virginia, not

only because of the economic
security it gave her, but also

it was a vindication.

Remember, she had been accused
by Maxwell

of making this all up.

I sometimes felt angry at the way
she dismissed

the victims of the sex
trafficking,

but there were times
when I felt sorry for her, too.

You know, I tried to understand what
led somebody to do these things.

I would never describe her as
a victim, but I would describe

her as a damaged human being.

And what caused that damage,

I don't know.

I've never been able
to understand why,

after our civil litigation
was resolved,

Maxwell did not go to the
prosecutors and try to do a deal.

She could have given them Epstein.

Now, maybe she was just still
too under Epstein's sway,

but she somehow almost seemed to put

that out of her mind, and go forward

as if it didn't happen.

She should have known

that are days were numbered.

She started to turn up more again
in London, in the late 20-teens.

I felt that was probably quite
shrewd and strategic on her part,

that she wanted something
that was away

from the whole Epstein story.

I think, probably, also she wanted
to know if London was still

talking to her.

Things were clearly still
unravelling at a rate

of which I certainly was not
aware at the time.

You would never be able to tell
if you met Glenn Maxwell

what was going on.

I mean, it was always the same
smooth, ocean-going confidence.

I met her through friends
who brought her to a party

that we were at.

We talked about our Oxford years,

and she said, "It was a great
time, wasn't it?"

I said, "Yeah, it was a great time."

And she said, "Yes, it's sad,
isn't it? How things turn out."

A judge ruled this afternoon
that federal prosecutors broke

the law when they signed a plea
agreement with Jeffrey Epstein.

That's because the agreement
was hidden from 30

of his underage victims.

The case received renewed attention
after the Miami Herald published

a lengthy investigation
into the plea deal.

January 2019.

Oddly enough, she "likes", clicks
"like" on an Instagram post of mine,

and her timing was pretty appalling,

because by now I know everything
and I'm furious.

I'm appalled and disgusted because
20 years ago,

Ghislaine told me that she recruits
three girls a day,

but she was using the word girls.

I literally just thought
she was just talking

about human beings, women.

In that article, I see all
of that and I'm horrified...

..that she was talking about
children.

We had been discussing children.

It was hard to take on... On a lot
of levels because...

..I felt responsible in a way,

that I had known information...

..that could have maybe made
a difference.

And I felt sick.

I was disgusted with her.

I felt I had let humanity down.

And yet I didn't know
what I didn't know.

What I realised very late
in the game was, she's evil.

She's evil and she's dangerous.

The billionaire American financier
Jeffrey Epstein has been formally

charged with the sex trafficking
of dozens of underage teenage girls.

The alleged behaviour shocks
the conscience.

And while the charged conduct
is from a number of years ago,

it is still profoundly
important

to the many alleged victims now
young women.

They deserve their day in court.

This is a great day for victims,
and I'm humbled and inspired

by their voices.

Our clients are extremely
gratified that these charges

have finally been brought.

Jeffrey Epstein found dead
in an apparent suicide.

The financier arrested on charges
that he ran a sex trafficking ring

apparently killed himself
today in prison.

He took the easy way out, not
having to face justice, not

having to face the victims.

And now it's entirely possible
this entire thing may be put

in a file and never seen again.

I had plugged my phone in to charge,
and when I plugged it in,

I accidentally had swiped
it to like the news thing.

Then there was his face.

I looked at this headline
and it read,

"Jeffrey Epstein found

"in foetal position in a jail cell."

I was shaking.

My heart was racing.

I was scared.

I was... I was crying.

I... I didn't know what to do.

I had spent 17 years replaying
all of that countless times.

And I had spent 17 years...

Keeping that in a very, very tightly
sealed,

buttoned-up space of shame.

It was like a re-traumatization
all over again.

It was... The world, you know,
shifted.

But I knew that was that moment
that I was like, "You are not

"going to sit here any more
and stay silent."

It's not how Jeffrey died,
but it's how he lived.

And...

We need to get to the bottom
of everybody

who was involved with that.

Starting with Ghislaine Maxwell.

I went to New York City and spoke

in federal court in August of 2019.

I said, "Ghislaine Maxwell
needs to be held accountable

"because she's what got me there.

"She groomed me to walk myself

"to the home of a predator
willingly."

"If it were not for her,
I would not have been abused."

Jeffrey Epstein may be dead,

but the investigation continues

into his web of abuse.

According to new reports, the FBI
has launched an investigation

of the British socialite
Ghislaine Maxwell.

The big question, Lady Victoria,
now, is where is Ghislaine Maxwell?

You knew her well.

When did you last have any contact
with her?

I haven't seen her since September
last year.

I don't think you're going to...

No-one's going to find her.

For months, prosecutors say
Ghislaine Maxwell

hid away in this New Hampshire
mansion.

But Thursday, FBI agents moved in.

Good morning.

Today, we announce charges
against

Ghislaine Maxwell for helping
Jeffrey Epstein sexually exploit

and abuse multiple minor girls

who were as young as 14 years old.

The moment I got the phone call
that Maxwell had been arrested,

I called all of my clients.

I remember crying on the phone
with them.

It was around 9:00 in the morning
and I got a phone call

from my lawyer, and she let me know
that Ghislaine had been arrested.

And I...

I mean, it was like a cel...

It was a celebration.

I was laughing and crying
at the same time.

Today, after many years,

Ghislaine Maxwell finally stands
charged

for her role in these crimes.

She had hoped she could be released
to a luxury hotel in New York

to wait out the trial.

But ultimately, a judge said
there were no set of conditions

that could ensure
she would not flee.

The risk - simply too great.

After a life of luxury.

This is now Ghislaine Maxwell's
stone-cold reality. Denied bail,

imprisoned in solitary confinement,

and heavily guarded here at the

Metropolitan Detention Centre in
Brooklyn,

with her trial at least
a year away.

I'm still in a state of shock.

I can't believe that Ghislaine
would have stooped to that level.

I really...

Part of me doesn't want
to believe it.

And part of me doesn't believe it.

Not the Ghislaine I knew.

But then again, a lot can happen
in 40 years.

I'm sure that there are many people
who do not view Ghislaine Maxwell

through those lenses of a predator
or a monster.

They view her as whatever fun party
they attended,

or whatever holiday
they attended with her.

She's not walking around shouting
to the world

that she was a predator.

She wasn't sharing that at
the holiday parties, you know.

So I don't necessarily blame folks
that can't see her that way.

I think that sometimes people
have very deep, dark secrets.

And this is a very deep, dark
secret that she carried on.

You know, the unfortunate, harsh
reality it is

for those that love and care for
her.

We're back this morning
with the latest

on the Ghislaine Maxwell sex
trafficking trial.

She denies all of the charges
against her.

Three women who say,

as teenagers, they were exploited,

have so far given evidence
at this trial.

Today began the long-anticipated
testimony of Annie Farmer,

the only accusing witness stepping
forward against Ghislaine Maxwell

in her real name.

And it began with the prosecution
saying,

"Is there anyone in this courtroom
who has ever given you a massage?"

And she said "yes," and identified
the defendant.

She said that she was asked
to disrobe,

and told to turn around, lying on
her back,

that Ghislaine Maxwell pulled
down the sheet,

exposing her breasts and touching
her breast.

It was definitely Ghislaine who

asked me first about my sister,
Annie.

Because I was always bragging
about her to everyone.

I mean, she was my whole world.

So I was like, "Oh, my gosh, my
sister is the smartest, the most

"beautiful, the most angelic."

This is in 1995.

I was in Palm Beach and I was
sitting outside by the pool,

and Ghislaine was leaning on a
chaise,

and she said, "Oh, it's too bad,
Annie's not here with us."

"You know, it would be very nice
to have her here."

And I said, "Oh, she would love it.

"She would have so much fun.
Definitely."

Ghislaine's role with Annie was
huge.

It's everything, because my mother
and everyone believed,

we all believed that Annie
would be safe with a married couple.

Like, why wouldn't she be?

And we didn't understand,
when we found out, how a woman

could participate in this,

it was really the most shocking
part.

So after two very brisk weeks
of trial, the government has rested,

and it's rested with this explosive
testimony from Annie Farmer.

The other witnesses were crying
as they recounted

these really troubling memories.
With Annie Farmer,

it's a different dynamic.

It's the unflappable Annie Farmer.

I did tell Annie that I was
very...

That I was very proud of her,

that she... That she was so brave.

She did it for everybody,
like Virginia and Teresa and myself.

She's just that generous, you know,

that she would be thinking
of everyone.

This trial is incredibly important
for everyone who's ever suffered,

I think, any kind of sexual abuse.

I'm concerned, very concerned.

If she's released, if she's not
held accountable,

that would be very damaging.

I reported this thing 26 years ago
to the federal government.

They nursed it, allowed it to exist
very clearly for 26 years.

And it just makes me really mad

that these people are able to get
away with

abusing as many people as they do,

because you don't recover
from those things.

They have all that power,
all of that credibility.

And Ghislaine lent that credibility
to Epstein.

That's what she provided
in this charade.

What it did do to me, this
experience, is it took away my trust

in every human being on this Earth.

Because if you can't trust
the people who are running the whole

show, who can you trust?

Walking into that courtroom,

my body was shaking,

my heart was racing.

Being in the same room with
Ghislaine

for the first time in 19
years,

I was overwhelmed, physically.

Her and I looked straight
at one another.

I didn't look away.
Not... I didn't blink.

She looked away.

This is me asserting my freedom,

and asserting my power and taking

back what was taken from me.

But I couldn't help but notice some
of her body language, you know,

just tossing her hair all
about like she didn't really come

across as someone fearful
of outcomes.

And that seems to be what
she's still carrying,

that presumption that all will turn
out in her favour,

and that's someone that's unwell.

That's a complete disconnect
from what she's done.

Out of Lower Manhattan,

where the Ghislaine Maxwell sex
trafficking trial is now in its 12th
day.

Well, first of all, the defence
team for Ghislaine Maxwell,

they did not start off the day today
well, at all.

The judge scolding them for not
having

some of their witnesses
ready to testify.

Now, one of them is going
to be ignoring a federal subpoena.

Another one has COVID.

Another one is 81-years-old, lives
in the UK

and cannot be here until Monday.

And then a fourth witness
who is scheduled to testify

is pleading the Fifth.

The defence case rested only
two days in,

in the trial
of Ghislaine Maxwell.

Usually, when asked whether or not
a criminal defendant will testify

in their defence, it's yes or no,
not Ghislaine Maxwell, she said,

"Your Honour, the government has not
proven its case beyond a reasonable

"doubt, and so there is no
need for me to testify."

And that's the kind of Ghislaine
Maxwell

we've seen throughout this
trial.

Confident, relaxed, awaiting a fate
that could see the rest

of her life in prison.

If she's feeling any sense of panic
over that,

she's not putting
on a face that would show that.

Breaking news and the Ghislaine
Maxwell trial,

she has been convicted.

She stood there, stony faced
as the jury read out the verdict.

When the jury filed out,

Ghislaine Maxwell poured a glass
of water, hugged one of her lawyers

and was led out of the courtroom.

Ghislaine Maxwell just got convicted
of five of six of the serious counts

against her, including the most
serious counts,

sex trafficking
of a minor,

which has a possible
maximum penalty

of 40 years imprisonment.

Mr Maxwell! Mr Maxwell, can
we have a statement on behalf

of the family, please?

What is your reaction
to the verdict?

We firmly believe in Ghislaine's
innocence.

Obviously, we are very disappointed
with the verdict.

We have already started
working on the appeal.

It's a tremendous relief to be here.

I wasn't sure that this day
would ever come, and I just feel

so grateful that the jury believed
us and sent a strong message

that perpetrators of sexual abuse
and exploitation will be held

accountable, no matter how much
power and privilege that they have.

I don't think the verdict
was a shock, but I did find

it made me recoil.

Looking at Ghislaine Maxwell
striding around in Oxford

all those years ago.

There was something very attractive,
very engaged

and commanding about her.

And that did make her someone you...

People want to know,
they enjoyed her company.

And yet those same attributes

were turned to... Really to
something very, very wicked.

If you'd said to me, this is where
Ghislaine Maxwell will end up,

this is what you'd be talking
about today.

I just would have said, "This is
crazy."

"You've got the wrong person."

What Epstein did is almost
a microcosm

of how the world works.

Very rich and powerful
people exploiting people

without that wealth and power.

She was the facilitator
of that rapacity, that predatory

determination to meet your needs

regardless of anybody else's costs.

Maxwell did not do this
because Epstein told her to.

She did it in her own agency,
her own will.

She chose to perpetrate
these crimes against young victims,

and she benefited from those crimes.

Epstein and Maxwell could not
have accomplished

what they did acting alone.

They could not have had the scope
and scale and duration

of the sexual
trafficking and abuse.

Their collaborators, their enablers,

their co-conspirators are all people

who need to be brought to justice.

The horrible heartache,

the collective heartache
of all of this.

For these two people to have
created,

for so many people, and then so many

other people off of that, families
and parents and all the other things

that stem off of this, you know,
shame on you.

Shame on you, so...

And not on me.

I don't wish harm.

However, she does not deserve
to be free.

I can only hope that,

at some point, she admits to
herself...

..what she's done, because I don't
think she has, at this point.
