Instinctively, with it being A one-vehicle accident,

They think that it was Possibly an intoxicated driver

Or that maybe there Was another vehicle

That was involved That fled the scene.

Holmes: they find this guy And he's slumped over.

There's blood inside Of the car, too --

Lots of blood.

Jim: What have you got?

He's got a gunshot wound.

They try to save his life.

Oh-seven, I need a 47 And a first responder.

This is demery.

I was in a deep sleep When they called me

And I was informed that There was a car accident

On hollywood avenue In shreveport.

And the victim was being Transported to the hospital.

The fact that I was called out

Made me believe that This was a suspicious incident

And not just a traffic accident.

I'm getting dressed now.

Late-night calls Or early-morning calls

As a homicide detective Are just a part of life.

Doesn't matter if you're asleep

Or watching a movie Or taking a shower,

The phone's gonna ring,

And you kind of prepare yourself For it to happen at any time.

But they always come at The most inopportune times.

When I get to the scene It's early morning,

Still dark.

The graveyard-shift Patrol officers were out.

-hey, rod. -how you doing, jim?

Doing better than The driver of that car.

There's a vehicle that's Crashed into a utility pole.

You know what happened?

Well, we thought it was just A standard traffic accident.

We got to investigate it,

Found the guy had been Shot on the right side.

He said it appeared to be A lateral gunshot wound,

And those are probably The most devastating

Because they can go Completely across the body

And the likelihood Of a vital organ

Being struck Is pretty high.

We have his I.D.

Inside the vehicle Was a driver's license

Of a male, black, 23 years old, Frederick henderson.

The vehicle was registered To a pamela ellis

Of bossier city, Frederick's mother.

The doe's At the hospital.

I haven't talked to him yet. This kid gonna make it?

It didn't look good, But we're not sure.

Look at that Right there.

That's interesting.

There was a considerable Amount of foliage -- shrubbery.

It kind of indicated That the vehicle

Had been somewhere Out of the city limits

Or somewhere unpopulated.

It was fresh, it was new, So that was noteworthy.

I immediately noticed that There were no skid marks,

So the vehicle went Full speed into the pole.

This window been Down the whole time?

Yes, sir.

The passenger-side window of The vehicle was rolled down,

And that created more questions Than answers.

Had the window been up,

The gunshot would've Went through the window.

The fact that The window was down

Made it difficult to determine

Whether the suspect was inside Or outside the vehicle.

Inside the vehicle, There was some

High-velocity blood spatter.

That showed that there was Significant blood loss.

I wasn't sure if that person Would survive that gunshot.

How was the body Positioned?

Across the armrest.

And the pants were Undone and down.

I'm thinking the victim May have been robbed.

Some people who rob Require the victim to disrobe.

That's a delay tactic for That person to contact police

So they don't leave immediately.

Also, He was wearing panties.

The victim had on Women's undergarments.

So that suggested That maybe this person

Was a cross-dresser or had An alternative lifestyle.

This where The I.D. Was found?

Yes, sir.

The fact that The victim may have lived

An alternative lifestyle, There's not any

Conclusions you can Draw at that point,

But it's definitely Something that adds

An extra twist to the case.

After I get the cellular phone,

I realize it has a lock code

So there's some level of privacy That the owner wanted.

Well, there are a couple Of different ways

That you can get information From a cellphone.

One would require A search warrant,

Where it's actually Submitted to an analyst,

But that takes forever Because there are

A bunch that need To be analyzed.

The other is we get permission To get into the phone.

Then you can Kind of scroll through

For any evidence That may be on it.

I didn't want to go Through the red tape

Of having to check it out And see what's what,

So I had them take custody Until I could figure

My next step out.

I just found out That our victim,

Frederick henderson, He didn't make it.

I think it's something For something that had

There should be A human connection.

It's important to know that A person has been killed,

A person's been murdered, A person is dead.

Kind of humanizes it A little bit more.

When you get too generic About certain aspects

Of a homicide investigation,

You kind of lose That human connection.

I got to go to the station And check on something.

Another day, Brother, another day.

After I noticed The clothing of the victim,

I realized that a few days prior There was a murder similar.

There was a male, black, That was a cross-dresser

That was killed.

Then I thought about Just prior to that,

There was another victim That was killed

That lived an alternative Homosexual lifestyle.

So, at this point, I'm thinking that

It's a serial-type killer.

Reporter: but it's very Important to note

Detectives have not Made any connection

Between the two cases Whatsoever.

So at this point, it could be Just a strange coincidence.

There's no coincidences.

I don't believe in coincidences.

I think the possibility of This being a serial murder

Or someone killing the same Type of people is very high,

Demery: I responded to a call Of a vehicle accident.

Turned out that the victim Was actually shot to death.

The victim lived An alternative lifestyle.

I learned that there Were two previous murders

That matched this murder.

Now I'm maybe looking For a serial killer.

As I looked into The previous murders,

The first that I read About is jock mckinney.

50-year-old male, black, Cross-dresser, and openly gay.

What's interesting about him

Is that, you know, He's a cross-dresser,

But he dresses more as a woman Than he does as a man.

People knew him as valerie.

Rudell: mckinney was walking Home from the store

In the mooretown area.

Sometime during that walk home, He was shot.

A passerby went to check on him And found him bleeding.

She called 911 And officers responded.

Next, I read the report On terry golston.

Golston was a 46-year-old male, Black,

Openly gay, And cross dressed.

Holmes: everybody likes terry. He's everybody's friend.

A lot of the cross-dressers Hang out together in one area.

Well, hey, ms. Terry.

Give me some loving.

And he's known by a lot Of people across the area.

Golston was on the street And what was reported as

And investigated as a robbery.

Golston was found Laying in the street

Bleeding with gunshot wounds.

He was transported To the hospital

Where he later died.

Demery: after comparing The three victims,

I realized that there's No possible way

This is just a coincidence.

With all three victims,

There's a pattern Or a common thread,

And that is They're cross-dressers.

The other point is, is they are All from the same part of town,

About a mile and a half, Two miles

From where my victim Henderson was found.

I knew that there May be a possibility

That his family didn't know

What his private lifestyle Consisted of.

I knew that maybe, At some point,

I was gonna have to reveal that.

A mother who has Given birth to a child

And that child is murdered --

I don't know that that's Comparable to anything else.

It was a shock to me

That somebody would Take his life.

Who could've done this?

Honestly, I'm hoping You can help me with that.

The fact that she was able To do that was amazing.

Why don't you start off By telling me

A little bit about frederick And what was he like?

Well...

I had five kids -- four girls,

And fred was The only son that I had.

He was protective of his family.

Fred thought he was The man of the house,

And he always Thought he could just

Tell everybody what to do.

Just press it together And fold it.

You're not making this For the president.

You're just making It for yourself.

And everybody would Do what fred say do.

Fred was the glue that Kept the family together.

He had a lot of friends.

People always in and out Of the house, you know.

Demery: she explained that He was a very outgoing

And happy person.

His mother and everyone else In his family

Knew his lifestyle And accepted his lifestyle.

So fred came out on His junior-high year.

And I just told fred, "You my son

And I'ma love you regardless."

I feel like that was a big Burden that was off of him.

He was proud of what he was, And I was proud of him, too.

Frederick owned His homosexuality.

He would wear dresses, He would wear purses.

He was just who he was.

Did he have beef With anyone?

Or can you think of anyone

Who might've wanted To do him some harm?

Well, there's one thing I can think of.

A couple months before, Fred and a young man

Had an altercation, A fight.

Ow!

Fred came home with Blood all over him.

He had pulled fred's earring Out of his ear,

And his ear was split.

Do you know Who that person was?

I don't know.

On the fight or the altercation

Where frederick's earring Was ripped from his ear,

But the fact that It actually happened

Was the significant point.

She and fred always Talked about things.

Who killed him and The other two people.

I've gotten the code To his cellphone,

And I'm hoping this phone Will lead me to his killer.

One of the crime-scene techs Has possession of the phone,

So I need to call that Crime-scene investigator

And meet them to get the phone.

Listen, I'm getting ready To duck into the morgue.

When I'm done, would you meet me

But first, I need to check in With the medical examiner

And see if He's uncovered anything

That might bring me closer To catching frederick's killer.

That it is just a boy, It's a kid.

He was killed at Such a young age.

And how tragic it was -- 23 years old.

So, any signs of powder burns On our victim?

Was at least 30 inches Or further back.

So it's very possible That the shooter

Was outside the vehicle When frederick was shot.

I learned that The victim was shot

And that bullet Passed through his arm

And it went through His right side

And eventually collapsed a lung.

Was there any signs of A fight or a struggle?

The only thing I noticed was

There was a slight tear On his earlobe.

But it was in the process Of healing.

The injury to his earlobe

Matches the story That frederick's mother told me.

Rudell: Our plan is that we're gonna

Create a log on a whiteboard,

We'll write the names And numbers down

And find out if they knew What was going on

Or what he was doing That evening.

Demery: as rudell scrolls Through henderson's phone log,

I'm keeping a record of

What names are associated With what numbers.

We got a call to mom.

Some contacts are saved As who they are by name

Like his mother Or a relative.

We have three calls To jayden.

And some phone calls Were just phone numbers,

Which means that it's not saved In his telephone book.

We got that 318 number Popping up again.

We notice that there's A recurring number

With the same area code.

Rudell: there was no name Associated with that number.

And that number Is the same number

That was the last call That was received

And answered on Henderson's phone.

The person he talked to last

Is the most important person That we need to talk to

Because they could give us The most current information

On where he was Or who he was with.

They may even be the suspect.

Rudell: at that time I decided To look at the facebook app.

I see a message from A breonne whitaker

Saying that he's trying To get in contact

With frederick henderson.

And then he gives a telephone Number in that message.

Is the same number That is associated with

The number that has no name On the call log.

We know that the last Person that called

Or talked to henderson Was breonne whitaker.

Demery: as rudell gets deeper Into the phone,

I'm talking to Frederick's mother.

She explains that she found out

Where he was when The fight took place

Where his earring was Ripped from his ear.

Frederick had told My daughter ashley

Exactly where the guy live at On kent street.

Demery: kent street Is about a block away

From hollywood avenue

Where the wreck And the victim was discovered.

That was pretty significant.

Hey, so that's pamela, Frederick's mother.

She said that The place where he had

The earring pulled out of his Ear is over on kent street.

We run breonne whitaker's Phone number

And name through our Police management system.

I find the address Is on kent street

Is where he lives.

Henderson's family told demery

That henderson had been In a fight with someone

In a yellow house.

When we looked up whitaker's House on google maps,

It was a yellow house On kent street.

So, What are you thinking?

I'm thinking We found our suspect.

At this point, We feel very strongly

That breonne whitaker might Have some answers for us.

Had been arrested for a murder When he was a juvenile.

How old was he When he did that?

Killed some guy Named kennedy.

When I looked, I realized

I know exactly who This little bastard is.

And when I get in the phone,

I realize that his last contact Was with a breonne whitaker.

I remember whitaker because I've arrested him before.

I distinctly remember this case

Because of The sheer brutality of it.

Breonne and a couple of His other friends,

They were out walking around In the neighborhood

And there was this Older gentleman,

On how they should act As young men.

They took offense to that.

And breonne was charged With manslaughter.

Being that he was 14 years old,

He was sentenced to The maximum sentence

Available to a juvenile At that age.

That was considered to be Juvenile life.

However, the judge can Release offenders earlier

If the judge so chooses.

Breonne was released At the age of 17.

To commit these three Murders or what?

That we're coming into contact

With someone who Just committed a murder.

We don't know Their state of mind.

So we're prepared to Take care of business.

We're looking for Breonne whitaker.

Where is he?

He's in the next room.

I'm relieved that he's In a vulnerable position.

At this point, We're watching for his hands

To make sure he's not Armed with a weapon.

So it was easy to See his waistband

And he wasn't armed, So I holstered my firearm

And then got him outside.

His first utterance is, "Is this about that punk?"

And in the south,

Or at least in shreveport In some neighborhoods,

A derogatory way to refer To a gay man is a punk.

I realize that he knew exactly What I was talking about.

Before we go any further, I need to read you your rights.

After I advise Him of his rights,

I just let him talk.

He told me that his friend And the victim

Had some sort of argument,

And his friend Shot the victim.

So, now, why did your Friend shoot him?

I don't know.

Jimmy and the punk Was just fighting,

And jimmy shot the punk.

I know Whitaker's lying to me.

I know who he's talking about, And he's locked up.

He was in jail at The time of the crime,

So I know That's not possible.

And whitaker told me About a fight

That he had Had with henderson.

Now, he corroborated the story That I already got,

So I knew that he was The person I was looking for.

If you're the one Who got into the fight,

Why did jimmy shoot him?

I don't know. Maybe jimmy didn't shoot him.

At this point, I have Breonne where I want him.

His story's not adding up.

It's time to tell me the truth, Breonne.

The person involved in Two previous murders

Where two homosexual Or cross-dressing men

With a video camera documenting The recovery of the weapon.

It's a 9-millimeter Semiautomatic pistol.

I know from the autopsy That henderson was shot

With a 9-millimeter pistol.

So this is most likely the Weapon that killed henderson.

He said that he feared henderson

Because henderson told him that He was gonna have him sexually.

Whitaker said that Because he felt

Like he was gonna be Sexually assaulted by henderson,

He shot him.

At this point, I knew That whitaker's story

Was completely illogical Because I knew

He had actually been the person

Who physically Beat henderson up,

So the fact that he was saying That he was afraid of henderson

Because he feared some Sort of sexual assault

Just didn't make any sense.

Towards the end Of the interview,

He told me he did, in fact,

Have a sexual relationship With henderson.

According to breonne, It was a relationship

Where breonne would allow fred To perform oral sex on him.

Demery: he told me they had sex In a wooded area

About a couple of miles From the crime scene.

It was off-road, And that corroborated the fact

That the foliage And the shrubbery in the car

Was consistent with when The victim's body was found.

Henderson: come on, Take off your clothes.

He told us that henderson Kept trying to get him

To have sex with him.

They tried to have intercourse But was not able to.

At that point, he was taking Him back towards his house.

Come on, let's go to The park down the street.

Breonne's claim is Fred is being very adamant

That breonne shouldn't leave.

Come on, we can go get a drink And have some more fun.

Come on. -no.

And when fred grabs Breonne's shirt...

No, don't go. Come back.

-hey, get off me. -come back.

...He thought that fred was Going to do something to him.

[ gasps ]

He pulled a firearm, Pointed it at henderson,

And he shot him.

Shortly after the shooting,

Henderson involuntarily drove Off and lost consciousness.

[ glass shatters ]

[ sirens wailing ]

Whitaker went home,

Put the gun in a place He thought was safe,

Got in bed,

And went to sleep.

And now I know some Of the statements

That he gives me Are not completely truthful,

That he may be Making some parts up,

But the long and short of it was

Is that he told me That he shot henderson.

I drove him back to The police station.

Now I want to find out what I can about the other cases.

I had a pretty good rapport With whitaker at this point

And I'm trying to get and gather All information I can from him

Before he decides that He wants to shut down

And doesn't want to talk Or cooperate anymore.

Demery: so, I'm investigating Some other shootings

That just happened in the area.

Somebody named golston And mckinney.

What can you tell me About that?

I had heard about them, But I don't know too much.

He told me he was aware

Of the killing of golston...

...But that he heard the gunshot Where mckinney was shot.

So you heard The gunshot?

Yeah, my baby mama live over Where he got killed, so.

He gave me some specific details

Of where he was shot And how he was dressed.

I figured He had to have known

Or was there when it happened.

Whitaker was The common denominator

In all those murders.

So at that point, I was pretty certain

That he was responsible for The other two homicides.

I didn't have my gun on me, But if I had,

I would have taken That neighbor dog out.

You would have Shot the dog?

Hey, guys, you know, You're gonna need

To talk to whitaker 'cause, uh...

'cause I'm pretty certain He's the one

Who killed henderson And mckinney.

We'll look into it.

Okay. We're on it.

When I gave up the information, My hope was

The detectives were gonna Draw the same conclusion

And figure out a way to Make those other two cases

Work with whitaker.

I don't know that they Acted on the information

But to this day, The murders of terry golston

And jock mckinney are still Unsolved, open cases.

Whitaker may have gotten Away with the murders

Of terry golston And jock mckinney,

But when it came to my case,

The murder of Frederick henderson,

Justice was served.

Rodgers: breonne was convicted Of 2nd-degree murder,

And he was sentenced to The mandatory life sentence.

Nothing fred did to deserve To get killed --

Nothing.

Was he perfect?

No, but he was my baby.

He wasn't out killing. He wasn't out robbing.

He was out having a good time For his age, 23 years old.

And for you to take An innocent life

And you destroy it, It's hard.

Demery: I thought about this case,

And I don't know that I ever Figured out the reason why

That someone like breonne Could have a sexual relationship

With someone That he truly desires

But at the same time Truly despises.

I think he was afraid

Of what people would have Thought of him.

And I think he went to the point

Where he would kill him so That he couldn't tell anybody.

I really think that He had a problem

With his own sexuality.

He would give in To his temptation

And within himself Feel so guilty about it

That he took it out on henderson And made him a victim.

The fact is that The murders didn't start

Until whitaker got Released from jail,

And they ended when He went to jail.

So it's pretty clear that Breonne was on a path to

Kill men that lived That alternative lifestyle.

And I'm just thankful that I was able to stop him.
