but, looking at all our players,
it's safe to say this year has been tough.

And I think Ivana

Then she was made captain
for the World Cup,

where her role was to fully support

the head coach,
the staff, and the federation.

They wanted her to do something
she'd never done before,

be the starting center-back
for the national team.

I felt out of place, because, well,

As captains,

we never saw our role
as blindly following the coach

with the players' needs.

And that's fine, but that is
what the coach wanted from his captain.

I don't want to be captain
in that dynamic.

We understood that we were there
to give 100% alongside our teammates,

and they saw it that way too.

GROUP STAGE - 2023 WORLD CUP

We've got goose bumps
before Spain's 2023 World Cup debut.

Spain is back to play
in another world championship.

Their group is fairly easy,
especially Zambia and Costa Rica.

They should beat both teams
before facing Japan.

The first match is always tough,
because of the nerves.

But we also had
all the stress from that year.

Spain's first real test of the World Cup.

If we beat Japan,
we'll be first in our group.

Spain has a superior team.

That was tough.

We all felt helpless.

We didn't know what to do.
We were out of ideas.

We couldn't find the answer.

We couldn't turn that match around.

We were outplayed.
We felt helpless, frustrated.

They trounced us.

We needed someone to tell us
how to stop all those goals.

It was pretty common for
the head coach to not have any solutions.

That was one of the players' demands.

They wanted more help and support
from the head coach. That didn't happen.

The result was the same.

We weren't playing on the same level
as the best teams out there.

Now that the group stage was over,
we had to win or we were going home.

That match really affected us.

Japan is thrashing Spain.

We, the veteran players,
were having déjà vu all over again.

We made it past the group stage
but expected to ultimately get eliminated.

We had been feeling like that for a while,
like that was an impossible obstacle.

And in sports,
Spain was sent packing at the Euros.

Vilda's team suffered a spectacular loss
against England in the quarterfinals.

from this tournament.

But this match could be a turning point

2015 - FIRST WORLD CUP

When I joined the team in 2015,

the head coach had been there
for more than 25 years, I think.

He hadn't won a tournament.

HEAD COACH 1988-2015

We're very hopeful,
very excited, obviously,

about our girls playing
in their first World Cup.

It was as if we were his young daughters.

He'd pinch our cheeks…

…or love handles. He'd pinch those too.

He'd make homophobic, vulgar comments.

Whenever we bring up that era,
that's what we talk about.

There was no real preparation.

They basically said,
"Well, let's see how far…"

Yesterday, Quereda submitted
his letter of resignation to the RFEF.

Jorge Vilda, the head coach
of the U19 team,

is now the new head
of the women's national team.

He was completely unqualified.

He was coach for seven years and didn't do
anything special for the team.

He joined the federation
through his father, Ángel Vilda,

who was very close with Rubiales.

Jorge became head coach
thanks to his connections.

I remember asking questions
about applying defensive pressure,

BEFORE THE WORLD CUP

It's 11:34 a.m. There's been major uproar
at the Royal Spanish Football Federation.

They described it as "impudent"
and a futile act of rebellion…

When we spoke
to the president after the Euros,

we assumed we'd discuss
what could and couldn't be improved.

But he didn't like many of our ideas.

They said things weren't going to change.

Rubiales is temperamental.
He reacted like we were attacking him.

And after that… well, the rest is history.

Today we've been told the captains
and key players have requested

the immediate removal
of head coach Jorge Vilda.

that we no longer trusted them.

We had to show the staff how we all,
not just three or four people, felt.

That meeting was…

intense.

The chairs were set up in a circle,

and we were like, "Yikes."

A really tense situation.

First, we were asked if we still
wanted to represent our country.

We were sitting in front of
someone that was going to call us up

depending on what we said.

He justified himself,
saying he'd done so much for us,

for women's football.

I said, "That's fine, Jorge.
But, given the situation, we need more."

He felt really attacked.

Then more of us said our piece,

but many players kept quiet.
They didn't say a thing.

In fact, a few…

spoke…

but contradicted the message
we'd agreed on before the meeting.

I swear that I was sitting there,

and my gut was telling me,
"Ivana, you have to speak up."

But some players had very radical stances,
like, "I can't take this anymore."

I said to myself,

"There is way too much at stake here,

I believe I was in a very unique situation

since I had just joined the national team.

and I didn't speak.

At the time, I was upset

that many players didn't speak up.

I admit I made a mistake

If I had, those players would've gone
into the meeting knowing

WE HAVE TO DO SOMETHING

When your teammate is assaulted,

I don't think there's any question
that you have to support her.

Then I called Verónica Boquete and said,
"Jenni is going to issue a statement."

"Create a 2015 World Cup group
for your team

and get everyone to sign the statement."
She said, "Okay."

It evolved into contacting everyone,

anyone that ever played
for the women's national team.

To prevent another leak, we didn't send
the document. We had to read it aloud.

We called each player

and read them the draft.

We didn't trust anyone or anything.

We even thought
our phones could've been hacked.

We asked someone to take a look.

At that point, I was scared.

Then I thought about Jenni and realized,

"If this is how we feel,
what must she be going through?"

We had to stand firm.

This time, no one could leave the table

and say,
"Now this is getting to be too much."

No. We had to hold our ground.

We were obviously afraid
of never playing on the team again,

but this was bigger than any fear.

We didn't care if it meant sacrificing

qualifying for the Olympics
or risking our careers.

The veteran players
were constantly reassuring us,

telling us they would take the heat.

"We're a team.
We're not gonna screw each other over."

I don't know why,
but I wasn't scared anymore.

The path was clear.
