how did you come to

false it's a long

story when they talked about doing a

spin-off I had ideas and they've just

taken those ideas and made them

something even better action you're

maintaining all of this history but

you're bringing it into a completely new

world it is The Walking Dead but it's a

totally new version of it being

surrounded by olders walkers in the

Eiffel Tower it was magnificent we're

constantly trying to do things that we

haven't done before this is the first

time The Walking Dead has done

superpowered walk it was wild to fight

walkers in the Gladiator battle that

move like they do I hope they love it

this is the exciting place that we find

ourselves in as we tell stories not just

for ourselves but for everybody in the

whole world the season is full of

surprises it's epic in scale there's

very heartbreaking moments some insane

action they really taking it to a whole

another level

here well it's very exciting to be

shooting this show in France when we

first started talking about this series

the number one question is well how are

we going to do it how are we going to

translate the essence of the show into

another country to sort of Infuse a new

culture and a new

landscape there's something really

exciting about having it set somewhere

completely different and seeing what the

apocalypse looks like on the other side

of the ocean sure beats a view from my

old house we've gotten to film at insane

locations it's a castle here it's an

Abbey there it's the catacombs over here

in the Eiffel Tower there we filmed in

the south of France with The Story

begins we're here in the

comed in Paris we are at the park it's

just next to Paris we filmed

that shooting at Monami shed was really

beautiful it was an amazing place it's a

much different show than shooting in the

woods it's in uh full

force my name is darl

Dixon I come from a place called The

Commonwealth it's in American

I went out looking for

something well I found was

trouble the story that we're telling is

first off Daryl getting here and him

trying to figure out where he's at well

you're

homick I see in your eyes he just wants

to get from point A to point B and to

get back home he's got to take this

group with him through France so it's

this sort of Epic Journey from the south

to the north going through Paris in the

middle and all of the turmoil that he

creates on the way and that he's running

from and trying to salvage the hopes of

these people you know at first I was

afraid of you wow there was something in

your eyes that could tell you've been

through

stuff it has elements of the same show

but it's a complete reboot it's a new

start of a story with this character

that I mean I've been playing for 13

years and it feels so fresh to me if I

don't make it

back I want him to know I

tried

and the decision to shoot the show in

France I think everyone thinks it was my

decision but it wasn't I was like wow

that's interesting this redneck Wild guy

in France well Norman has been Central

to this whole production I mean he he's

been the heart and soul of it this is

his show as as far as I'm concerned with

David Z and I'm here to bring it to life

for them you know I'd never filmed over

here before and I was game for it

there's an Artistry here like the camera

Department you do a take and then they

would stop and they would talk and I

wasn't used to that then I realized what

they were talking about and they were

talking about like what is this move

what's the story it's telling you know

once I learned what the camera

Department was talking about I was like

take your time all your day players are

really good so got the zombies that are

really good you have your cameraman who

are artists kind of a dream to work here

all of France is such a character in the

show and it's really added in Elegance I

really like the way it's affected the

storytelling and the look and the

lighting of it and the pacing the more

we let it breathe and the more true we

are to what we're filming on the day I

think the better it

is

dead ones at the market here we call

them there's a the hungry ones butar is

just one

[Applause]

kind I think one of the most exciting

things for me was coming to France doing

zombie school and the majority of the

performers you know their dancers their

mimes they had all seen the show and I

think a lot of them were really

delighted to be able to be a part of the

series they came ready to go 3:00 a.m.

excited to be in the makeup chair they

really love like walk up and touch the

Prosthetics and look at the teeth and

look at the contact

lenses and they take off their mask and

they're these amazing youthful full of

life men and women and the minute they

put on everything you kind of want to

stay

away well you know the real challenge

with changing up the rules is is you

know people are very very specific in

terms of what our zombies can and can't

do so it's been introduced that there's

a group of people that are doing

experiments there's burners who react

differently and they sort of have this

like acid Bloods to the touch there's

some there sort of pulsating and emate a

little smoke something we've never done

on The Walking Dead we've never painted

veins on them before changed the color

of the contact lenses so that the

eyeballs kind of look almost like a

bright blue hot flame like a blowtorch

it's just something different because

the traditionalists who know what the

zombie rules are will understand that oh

this is a mutation a

variant there's an amped up version of

the Walkers that move really fast and

are super

terrifying There's an actual reason for

the zombies to become even more active

they're injected with this fluid that

act as an accelerant and their eyes

change color to Black and the zombies

become very quick and very

powerful it's just a momentary change in

their

physiology and it's something that I

think suits the story well and you know

they only last for a minute maybe two

and then and then they just kind of melt

down into puddles of rotting

flashh which is also

fun there's a sequence that I direct

where Daryl falls through a glass roof

and lands in the water we had several

Walkers they were burners we had

actually rigged a tube up Zombie's hand

so when he grabs Daryl's arm bubbles

erupt as if it's sizzling we had tubing

underneath the Prosthetics so when darl

would stab one we would just start

pumping the brown fluid into the water

we spent about 8 hours in this water

tank meticulously choreographing laugh

in this I think Norman might have drank

half of the water in the pool by the

time he got

out there of the Angels

[Music]

now are we lost as

a we never lost

him I had never seen The Walking Dead

I'd heard a lot about it thought I'd be

too

scared I like the idea of starting the

project with no idea about who Daryl was

and what he had been up to and so I kept

it that way thinking I could binge watch

it

later hello I'm Clon I play Isabelle

when we meet her she's a nun but what we

discovered that Isabelle was someone

with quite a troubled youth and someone

who found some kind of redemption in the

apocalypse she has a few Secrets wasn't

always a none Isabelle has learned a few

tricks in our youth which come handy

when you need to fight off zombies and

fascists Isabelle was like a second

month to L there's a motherly Bond

there's a sisterly Bond I think she

wants to save Lan and she believes that

he needs to be saved he's got a greater

Destiny than just surviving because he's

going to be the one leading Humanity

towards something better kind a lot to

put on a kid don't you think God chooses

our burdens Clemen and I you know we

didn't know each other before this we

kind of barely met before we started

filming but as they sort of soften

towards each other we as people sort of

softened towards each other it just kind

of worked out perfectly maybe we the

saying that way broken until the world

ended hi I'm Lou pry and I played the

roong of lauron I just enjoy Lou he'd

never have been on the set before so

just to see that Discovery through his

eyes is quite was quite special I really

like Lou right off the bat I read a

bunch of Kit's age and I liked him first

during my audition we were starting to

improvise and it was really cool and it

made us kind of bun you look homesick I

see it in your eyes when he was

Shing he's super smart I could tell he

was kind of like mimicking me in real

life sort of like the way the character

was mimicking me in the show as that

happened our friendship grew and I had

to call into Sony and I'm like I got to

get a PlayStation for this kid yeah he

gave that to me and I was really happy I

run out to no woman and I give him a big

Hub thaning him that's kind of how we

started our relationship please to make

your

acquaintance I think sometimes I wish he

wouldn't be the chosen one he wants to

be a kid I want to be like other the

kids yeah I know you do the kid is an

outsider I think Daryl sees a lot of

himself in

luron I don't want to

be yeah yeah come here I think he's

going to be a superstar of that

kid hi I'm laa FR and I'm playing

sylv I just passed the audition telling

myself that I'm never going to have this

part because it's Walking Dead and I

just did it for fun and it worked I know

she's not perfect but she'll do anything

for you little brother she'll die for

you is

nuron and Isabelle they are family she's

like the big sister of lauron and she's

taking care of him Isabelle is like a

mother to her she really T her about the

world and they are really close and have

this strong

connection

she's a kind of naive but she's also a

badass because she know how to fight and

to defend

herself so I like this duality of her

personality we're looking for an

American we understand has been here his

name is darl

Dixon I'm ROM and I play codon I been

actually I was very nervous about this

audition for me it's really a dream come

true I am a big big fan of the show I

have watched every episode Kon he's a

French soldier for political movement

called the cause our leader is

Jan hi I'm anay and I'm playing Mar J

she's a political

figure

she's kind of bad

seed it was name

Dix that scene in the Abby with Dariel

when Kon finally meets Dariel that was

my first scene Norman was so kind with

me so careful with me all the time

because he punched me a lot during that

scene I love loved

it so Dell is immediately a threat

anything that goes against a will is a

threat she's threatened by Lon because

it's another Power she can't let him be

I think Lon thinks that Jan has a broken

heart cuz she's doing bad things really

bad things but she's doing it for

others she's fighting for right but

she's doing wrong she wants people to be

free but she needs to control them she

knows what is right and she believes it

so much that's the point of the

character she's a

tyrant you still love

champ I I would grew

it my name is Adam neus and I play Quinn

he owns a cabaret club called the demim

mon he's made alliances with Jana and

he's um purveyor of rare items in this

dystopian World hi is he he he ends up

stumbling across the love of his life

again after a decade strange to see you

again after all these years everybody

else gets shut off as soon as he sees

Isabelle walk in should we talk in my

office and what he wants changes and

therefore he changes you still should

have told me that my sister died

and I had a son I mean he's genuinely

hurt for whatever he can be hurt a boy

should know his dad he just gets angry

which is what men do best darl

when you get down to this Primal level

of a dystopian world just go people

certainly tend to adopt the most cliche

versions of

themselves his selfish and self-

obsession is his

downfall the journey to wash aore is was

such a big Journey he's got to take a

minute to sort of figure it

out

he RS in France wearing the costume that

he's been last seen in uh the finale of

season 11 the iconic blue winged vest

the vest makes its way over here it just

is in bad shape everything on me is in

bad shape my clothes are ripped

everything that I have with me is pretty

much

destroyed see we had to make this

beautiful iconic item into something

completely unwearable to justify the

fact that we're going to give him a

French look we painted the result of a

SE salt drying for days wetting drying

then we painted the wings and by fading

the paint on the wings and then we we

went at it with a cutter so so that he

would never feel like wearing his rest

again my first idea was um we have to

get him into a is never wor before for

sure we've never seen him in blue it's

quite ionic France on the boat when he

arrives he finds a blue Pono hey you

American guy and then when he gets

attacked on the road very quickly he

finds himself rescued by the

nuns all of my wardrobe is from an old

priest this is per we are waiting for

him to rise again he's dressed with per

old clothes B being his character in VI

who has become a zomie and so his

clothing are being shared he's the only

male that lived there so I end up

incorporating his wardrobe into my

wardrobe yeah we should probably have

some it one of the things that David's

able the showrunner had said was we got

to find a castle because we have to have

a moat filled with

zombies

we had 80 zombies uh in the moat and we

shot over four

days that looks great that going be good

we have our hero closeup makeups we have

our mid-ground masks we have our

background printed masks I brought

several people from the United States

that were part of my makeup team on The

Walking Dead and and then I found a lot

of fantastic local makeup artists who

have sort of been indoctrinated into the

family so if we have some that are

grabbing here here and then some of the

bigger ones could be up there in this

instance we wanted to just make sure

that the shots that we did in the mod

look like it was filled from every

direction for vfix we have all the blue

screens when we are doing the editing

and we can add crowds of zombies adding

blood adding stuff maybe adding some

blood on the camera lens we will be

there if needed get back there is a

signature Moment In The Walking Dead

anytime any character is killed by

zombies the disembowelment you

know you want to see that ripping senu

and muscle so he's actually dangling

like a

pinata and then the zombies grab him and

start to devour his legs and pull him

down and start to tear him apart so we

designed a dummy that we could tear the

stomach open and pull all these fig

intestines out and then what we did was

we put uh bite Prosthetics on the

actor's legs one the high part of his

leg and one uh and his calf that were

pre-rigged so that a zombie could bite

into it we would pump blood and you'd

see the muscle in the skin rip so it's

something that Walking Dead audiences

have come to expect no no

no everything has a poetic nature to it

although it can be brutally Savage

it's been a lot of

fun that was a great day it was the

first I think scene that we did that

involved a lot of

zombies and

explosives for shooting the propan tank

we have a huge team working there

actually you see the zombies and then we

blow them up with old antique rifles we

will be enhancing all of this with CGI

to make the propine tanks fly directly

in front of the

camera so we have a way of doing things

and the French crew has a way of doing

things and I think what's fun is we're

both learning from each other and I've

been really impressed the team has been

fantastic it's very good

we're always really looking for uh new

and different ways to portray the

zombies in this universe uh the Daryl

Dixon show gives us a unique perspective

because the European flare and the

European flavor is something that allows

us to be a bit more artistic and a bit

more

creative like a

show so there's a sequence where there's

a conductor who has has actually

modified zombies to be performers in

this little symphony that he's set up

it's an interesting scene that sort of

came from the minds of our our writer

David zel and his team we have to create

musicians to be in this Orchestra for

this crazed and I would say desperate

conductor who's yearning to put an

orchestra back together you see music

cure it lives heav now it still lives

our department in conjunction with

Clovis the production designer came up

some really beautiful concept art we

were able to really do something a

little different you know having zombies

with its arms broken that was able to

bang on a Gong and we had other zombies

that had trumpets shoved down their

throat we had a zombie head that was

swinging back and forth in a harp so it

was something really really outrageous

you fired up oh no I use some buts for

um

amplification the radio's been

repurposed as a stereo and of course

it's very disconcerting for darl and

Isabelle who who who've come to find a

radio and find instead the zombie

Orchestra that's a stupid

detour you did it your way now we're

going to do it

mine I'm going to

Paris you hear that Miss Paris

crying

come this set is our camp Hey voila home

sweet home and he did amazing job

because this set is in the studio but

the thing is it looks like it outdoor

our

Garden Palo is an artist and he lives

with an underground group of

people and they are self-sufficient and

they're trying to do their best to

survive and the history behind

everywhere that we're going it Blends

very well into the story where are we

the cath comes brother among the remains

of the 6 million who died in laest Noir

the Black Death there's a really great

line from

where he says uh this is this is France

oh here we surviv many

apocalypses we we survive this one too

history is entwined with what's going on

with the

plot as fun come back as

fun we just always remember the

resistance and the occupation so it just

remind us that what happened in the past

may come again I love that tribute that

David and his team have weaved in to the

French

Resistance and to Heroes who have

actually been there good luck you too

thank

you okay's shoot so today we are

shooting at UT Beach it's particular

place for the cultural exchange between

France and United

States action it has this sort of old

Battlefield

rustic traditional feeling here that you

don't have in the United

States the cemetery where darl will

discover his uh grandfather

Tom we will just dress a little part

where darel will work and then we will

enlarge all the cemetery and adding a

lot of graves it's a huge part of the

vfix to be unseen if our job is well

done then you won't see

it he's heard stories of his grandfather

but finding those Graves there he sort

of realizes where he is and then he sort

of frantically starts looking for these

names and then he finds it and it sort

of hits some who that is so there's a

moment of sadness but then there's also

I'm not going to be you I'm not going to

destroy the family I have back home by

being you so there's like resentment

there as well even though the guy's a

hero but it just sort of makes him walk

faster to the boat hey we are shooting D

living and we will have the huge fight

with all the zombies in the

Hills I like the fight through the

walkers on the way to the water because

it was like one foot in front of the

other determined determined determined

you know it wasn't like a normal fight

that you see on the shows but it's great

I love

it if there is a deal to be made this is

the place Isabelle when she reaches

Paris with Daryl and Lon and syv they

end up in a place called The Dy the

flame of lavid still Burns in the

dyon which is this like crazy

underground cab and I think we were all

kind of as Amazed by it as our

characters were people find all sort of

things

here you help us now we help you you

walk into sex and heathenism but also

Beauty it's walking into Quinn's brain

how

that actually at the beginning in was

supposed to be in the catacombs not in a

sewer and I spoke with David made

drawings I've showed him some stuff and

well here we are now it's the kind of

thing that only Quinn could do would be

to say the world is ending I think I'm

going to start an underground nightclub

he's more at home underground than he is

above it Queen Is AA I collect all sorts

of things by the time he's at his height

when we meet him he's collected out in

the streets everything that you could

think of that's of value he's got it

can't believe You' never heard one of

those looks a bit

old an old one is better than none at

all in art Department including set

decoration art Department designers we

are about 150 people working on that

show which is enough to make those great

sets for this specific set we took three

months we started from ground from zero

and we built everything here on the

demim and on Queen Banker CU a such a

place do not exist in real life this is

where the generals HD away during World

War II good

B I like the idea of making the

beautiful sexy Cabaret in a sewer and

transform it into this weird and yet a

sexy place there's debauchery and danger

but also elegance and beauty and art all

trapped in the caves of the

catacomb those will be

those Paloma who won rupal's drag race

France was performing

there and I'm a huge drag race Watcher

I've seen them all so I was kind of

geeking out there being in drag is a

pain everything is painful most

difficult part is the the PS in my back

which are very heavy I've been on drag

race I can do everything

now watching L's performance was really

beautiful everything on my look is very

uh FES in the eyes and the the finger

wavs classic

glamour we don't have a lot of chance in

France to play in big am Hollywood

production for an actor and for dragman

like

a big dream I

think

I think that's such a different look

than things we've seen it was very

colorful and it was awesome to film that

old school mixed with uh apocalyptic

that was such a a ciray moment in the

middle of the darkness I thought it was

awesome every time I pass the Eiffel

Tower in real life I have to take a

picture of it I don't know why I have a

thousand Pi of it

now looks like I got the tip knocked off

of them it must be magical to stand

under it and look up at the sky the

Eiffel tower has a special twist to it

cuz it's broken in half and at night the

wind will pick it up a little

bit when the winds blow the metal grows

that sort of is the feeling of the world

here at the

moment

the scene at the base of the Eiffel

Tower is a great action

sceney so here we are in parl in sanlu

it's in the suburb of Paris we are

recreating the Shand Mar that's why

we're here because it's the same kind of

garden with the same Alle the same trees

and where we can put the F Tower the art

department just didn't amazing work so

for this set we just established this

white blue screen it's one of the

biggest we've done in Paris outside the

main idea is we have a hord of zombie

like thousands of zombie under the the a

Tor and it's so fun I bring the F to the

zombies and the zombies to the

F the set was really

amazing and the Walkers were coming up

to me and then surrounding me it was

kind of funny cuz there were kind of

making funny faces cuz we weren't really

in the sh they just saw the exterior of

the Walkers surrounding

me today you died watching The Gladiator

scenes was

incredible the crew really has brought a

unique sensibility to the show the way

they shoot things here it's very

different than the way that we've done

it in the state so for me it's exciting

to watch the tools that they use and see

the way that they compose shots which

makes the show feel unique very good we

pick it up from this moment Dan paral

who was the director of the episode was

very keen to collaborate making sure

that this didn't feel like a sequence

that we had seen before the whole thing

is theater for the masses it needs to

feel like a post-apocalyptic

gladiatorial combat I ain't going to be

in here the way the spotlights came in

it done one 2 free they're panning from

Walker to Walker and the crowds yelling

and screaming and as we see these

zombies being altered by the injection

of this fluid it sort of amps everything

up find by braking just by break now

this is the first time The Walking Dead

has done superpowered Walkers so so they

move really really fast it's always

challenging to cast uh zombie performers

because the aesthetic is they're rotting

corpses so you imagine that they're

thinner they look more skeletal I think

in the early incarnation of the script

and they talking about Uber zombies some

of the people that they auditioned were

like 6'4 they look like the rock it says

super strong Uber zombies but you don't

want them to be muscular they're still

corpses they're corpses that have been

chemically altered something we've never

done on The Walking Dead Before darl

Dixon has spent his whole life fighting

Walkers that Lumber around like this and

now now he's having to fight from the

run at him it's a whole new experience

it's wild to fight walkers in the

Gladiator battle that move like they do

and the stunt team here is phenomenal

they give it up 200% every single take

they're just like so in it biggest

challenge is to have two people fighting

together chained together it's you

against me then eh darl is experienced

and knows how to kill these things Quinn

is not experienced in killing these

things but he's not a coward and so how

would they fight it's very Scrappy for

Quinn and Daryl manages to maneuver it's

a ballet between camera directors actors

stunt people special effects well Norman

and Adam want to do all their own starts

they want to do all their own fighting

you know there was barely a moment here

where they weren't doing your own

fighting and when they did I was just

giving them a break it's exhausting I'm

glad I was chain to Norman I can think

of other people in my life I'd rather

not be chainu they were doing these long

set choreograph pieces and nail it both

fantastic fantastic physical access it's

a really fun way to work 3 2

1 the hardest part was throwing the head

in the right spot from across the room

but I thought my aim was a little better

but it took me like 10 dve at one point

I threw it in the head landed right in

some guy's lap and he was like a which

was great but it wasn't

right and then at one point I threw it I

threw at J and she went to catch it so

the head was there and we kind of played

with it you know we made pictures and

stuff was clearly a caret you know or

dummy and I got

afraid it's a very bad day for her it

starts really

well and ends up not so

good that gladiator battle was the most

fun to film the days that we shot that

gladiator walkers scene was a huge day

for me was a dream coming true being on

the set of The Walking Dead all right

here more

Jeff I hope the fans love

it it was a gross fun exhausting day

which are my

favorite that location M Michelle's it's

just

magnificent

we are on a little island there's a real

medieval vibe in the streets shooting at

Mami Shadow was really beautiful it was

an amazing place and the view was great

and we had loads of fun when they

arrived at the nest there's this big

feeling of we did it we

succeeded the whole first season they're

trying to get to this mysterious place

and at the end of the season they find

it welcome to the nest I'm

loang you French now

Hoboken for a character like loang it

just really appeals to me because first

of all he's Asian in appearance and yet

he's speaking French and then he's a

Buddhist monk but he now Embraces

Catholicism and Judaism and

Hinduism God does not exist unless we

believe in God there's a great faith

that salvation is near and that they

just have to hold on and they have have

to tow the line and if they can do that

then they can be present and in service

of a return to the way things used to be

I like it

here yeah kind of gross on it feels like

home we've talked about the nest so much

throughout the season and to finally

meet all the characters at the nest was

great I got family waiting for me back

home you've got people here who hope

you'll stay I think the arrival of

finally getting this kid where he has to

go and Daryl having to make a decision

where he's grown very fond of these

people and sort of feels a

responsibility and a and a sense of

family here and he don't know if he

wants to admit it it isn't my fight

maybe the fight's not the reason you're

torn sometimes when a person leaves

home he comes to find he belongs

someplace

else the thing that loang sees is that

Daryl has an ability to love

which is something that I don't even

think Daryl acknowledges and I think

Daryl has a wonderful influence he

breaks the cycle and allows Laur to just

be a kid we're so lucky to have the

opportunity to shoot in a place like M

Melle I believe it's the first

non-french production to have the

opportunity to shoot there the monelle

has been restored for cultur purpose so

we will remove the bridge we will remove

the scaffoldings and we will make

everything feels like the M Mel is

living during the apocalypse you have

this beautiful Jewel in Western France

it has a Mystique about it and so to

take this group The Nest and to put them

there it's a great match story-wise it

just sort of enhances the mystery and

the Majesty of the place it just adds an

air of authenticity and makes it so much

easier to to do your job as an actor to

inhabit the space in the world because

you have this amazing

place to get to the top of that place

you climb stairs for like an hour and a

half there's no escalator or elevator in

that spot and you're so tired it's the

sort of spiral the Cathedral at the top

of the mam shell was really big and cold

and they were telling me at the top oh

there's a few fans there and I was like

oh it's cool but I did not expect to see

the spiral road all the way down the

mountain full of people that was crazy

there was a Quee of like 3,000 people

there it took me a long time to get in

the

car but other than that it was

great hello are you

there hello hey it's me Daryl are you

okay I'm hoping when they hear a Carol's

voice on the other end of that radio

they're going to be surprised Melissa

has been part of the show since before

the first script was written looking for

a friend of mine nam's Daryl Dixon I got

out here before you got out here and I

knew you were coming but I couldn't say

you were coming you got the ball rolling

in a really big way yeah we're supposed

to like keep it a secret yeah so I was

just H up in a hotel room

oh six weeks I was visiting the Eiffel

Tower I was going to restaurants right

yeah you were hiding and I'm like

wearing hats and sunglasses and just

staying in and yeah hoping nobody sees

me yeah I'm happy that you're here how

does it feel coming back it feels

exciting it feels strange and it feels

very

familiar easy lady where'd you get the

bike I think the most important thing

was really Carol's heads space she

needed her friend and she needed to know

that he was okay if you're lying I won't

be back that sort of gut feeling is

something that reverberates inside of

her and she in Very Carol fashion goes

to figure it out I think that she will

be true to her character and there are

always changes coming with her she's

holding something

back to be able to continue as a

producer director and creative on the

show with Norman has been an absolute

dream come true it's a complete reset

for us this show has scale that we've

never seen where the other show was Time

Square this is like candl

light everything is working you know

which is how the original Walking Dead
