(anticipatory music)

(horse nickers) (wind whistling)

(horse whinnying) (dramatic music)

(seagulls squawking) (engine rumbling)

(door banging)

(waves splashing) (travelers chattering)

- Come on, Tommy.

Atta boy.

- Them's my bankers.

Remember old man Dodge and his son?

They rented my big cabin for a week goin' fishing.

- Another bunch usin' bed bait, huh?

- You can catch a lotta things that way.

- Crabs.

(Clyde laughs)

- I thought we got rid all of 'em.

- Just for the week.

Goin' fishin', you know?

- Ah. (Cobb burps)

(Jerry chuckles)

(travelers chattering) (waves splashing)

- Captain?

- [Captain] 50 pounds of 10 penny nails, Jerry.

- Sure, what about those door hinges?

- Couldn't find 'em, next trip for sure.

- Oh, okay.

What do I owe ya?

- Oh, I'll bill you for the work next week.

- Okay, good enough.

(seagulls squawking) (gentle music)

- Bobby, did you get your sweater outta the closet?

- Yes. - Then we're about ready.

- [Woman] Except for the dog.

Go take care of that, okay?

- [Man] You don't think we'll find someone

in the city to take care of it?

- No, I don't.

Look, we'd end up giving it to the pound

and they'd end up gassing it,

which is exactly what would've happened

if we hadn't come along.

- (sighs) Bobby, now don't go actin' like a baby.

You gotta be a big fella.

Flint wouldn't be happy in the city.

There's no place to run. (Flint whines)

I'll tie him out in the trees,

just enough to hold him 'til the ferry comes.

He'll get away when he tries hard enough.

Bobby, we gotta hurry now if we're gonna make the ferry.

Okay.

Come on boy, come on.

(Flint whining)

There, you're gonna be okay.

You'll be all right.

I'm sure somebody will come and take ya in.

Okay.

(Flint whining)

Oh, Bobby. (Flint barking)

- [Man] Suppose they got the fishin' licenses, Clyde?

- It's safe to ask.

Don't go askin' for no marriage licenses, though (laughs).

- Good to see you, Hardiman.

This is my secretary, Marge.

And Lois, she's our cook this week.

Real good fish cook.

- Good to have one of those.

- And this is Harry Walker, my vice president.

- How do you do?

- And my son Tommy, you know.

- Excuse me, I suppose everybody has their fishing licenses?

- Oh, we're all proper.

I fished all of these islands over the years.

Dodge here.

- [Jerry] Jerry Preston.

- Ah, I love it!

- I understand that poison ivy has a small round dark leaf.

Could someone point it out to me?

- Well, there's not a whole lot

of it around here, Mr. Walker.

You have to try the woods.

- [Jim] Anything left to the salmon run, Clyde?

- [Clyde] They've been takin' a few.

Cabin's all ready. - Could you get

my suitcase, please? - I cleaned it out

just this morning.

(waves crashing)

(suitcases thudding)

- Hardiman, you got plenty of sauce in your store there?

- Sure, why they go all the way up

to Jack Daniels at the cabin.

(man laughing)

(door slams)

- I'll get those!

Store new, too.

- Christ! (Jerry laughs)

(Ry panting) (engine rumbling)

- Hey Ry, wanna go by Millie's, hm?

Boys are over there.

Would you like that?

(pensive music)

Well, there's old McMinnimee trying to hook up his dog.

(car beeping)

Sure depends on that dog.

(dog barking) (music continues)

- Zsa Zsa, come here now, we're goin' to town.

(Zsa Zsa barking)

Zsa, Zsa, come here!

(Zsa Zsa growling)

(birds chirping) (music continues)

(barking continues)

Zsa Zsa, come here!

(Zsa Zsa whines)

(engine rumbling)

(horn honking)

- Come on down, boys.

Your father's here, Guy.

- Come on, Ry.

- [Guy] Come here, Ry.

- Hello. - Howdy.

- I was on my way out to your place.

- Yeah, well, I thought I'd bring the boys by

and show 'em how you were doin'.

- Ah, but you're not so interested, huh?

- Who me? No.

- Nah. - No.

- [Guy] Did you bring something to eat?

- No, nothin' till dinner.

Hello, Paul.

All right, what'd you guys learn

from your new schoolmarm today?

- We've been finding out about the sex life of things.

- Hm?

- Yeah, well, the boys have been asking

some rather blunt questions,

so I thought that it best that we start with animals.

- You wouldn't believe how turtles do it, Dad.

- You'd be surprised what I'd believe.

Hey, why don't you guys go off and play

in the wood or somethin'?

Bring me back some firewood or somethin', okay?

Okay. - Come on, Ry.

- Come on, Millie, I'm gonna give you a tour of the house.

Come on.

Stay away in the cliffs, hear?

Boy, they really pay attention, don't they?

- Mm hm.

(gentle music)

- At the foyer, a long stairway leading to the second floor.

(chuckles) Now above us,

a light of fine quality and brilliance.

- [Millie] Hm (chuckles).

- Madame.

(indistinct) a chair.

We got our sunken living room, fireplace, picture window.

- [Millie] Hm.

- And over to the right here, this way, Madame.

With an ocean view, we have the kitchen.

(Millie chuckles)

It's a superior design and very functional.

And right here, we got our spacious bathroom.

- [Millie] Mm.

- And right in here we got our bedroom.

Mm, bedroom.

(Jerry's throat clears)

How do turtles do it?

- Very slowly.

- Very slowly? - Mm hm.

- That's what you're teachin' our kids, huh?

- [Millie] Mm hm.

- Wanna play turtle? - Yeah.

- Hm?

- [Guy] Dad?

- What?

- Come here, Ry found something.

(Jerry sighs)

(Millie laughs) (mysterious music)

- Where are ya? I can't see ya.

- [Guy] Over here.

- [Jerry] Honey, watch that step.

- [Millie] Yeah, I will.

(dramatic music)

- Well, I think you boys found Clyde Hardiman's horse.

- Hammer?

- Yeah.

- It's a long way off from where Clyde said he tied him.

Maybe he was sick and wandered off.

- Nah, he wasn't sick. (flies buzzing)

Those marks and chips on his bones there,

somethin' killed him and ate him.

Ry, come on, boy.

(flies buzzing)

I got some stuff to take over the dump.

Can I pick up anything at your place?

- No, there's not enough to bother with.

- Why don't you come over later, hear?

- Okay.

- I got two channels workin' on that TV set.

- Terrific, I'll be over at the usual time.

- [Jerry] All right.

- Can Paul come with us?

- Yeah, okay.

- Sure.

(doors banging)

Hey, listen, make sure he keeps his jacket on will ya?

He's comin' down with a cold.

- Yes, you know I'm a good mother.

(engine rumbling)

See ya later.

(engine rumbling) (birds chirping)

- I hope there's enough bunks for everybody.

- We'll make it work.

It's all a matter of organization (chuckles).

- I'm glad to see that you're letting yourself go, Harry.

- Yeah, I got these two years ago.

First time I've had a chance to use 'em.

- You really shouldn't let a good thing

like that go to waste, Harry.

- That's what I thought.

- [Lois] Oh, dear!

- I'll be damned. (fingers snapping)

Do you know what I forgot?

The steaks. Can you believe that?

- Clyde, would you mind driving Marge and Harry

and I back to the store?

We can't live without the steaks.

- No trouble, Mr. Dodge.

- I was going to get into the hotel loan.

- [Jim] It can wait Harry.

- I don't think getting the steaks will take three of you.

- I think it will, Tommy.

I really think it will.

- Sure, Dad (sighs).

- There, I'm all set.

- Fine, I can use a couple of hooks for cabezon.

Do you have some squid for bait?

Fresh, not that frozen crap.

- All you can use.

- Where's everybody going? - Shopping.

- [Jim] We'll be back before dark.

- We'll be all right!

You don't have bust a fan belt getting back (chuckles).

(doors slamming)

I used to go with a mechanic.

(Tommy sighs)

(engine rumbling)

(doors banging)

- All right, boy, grab one each.

Over there'd be good.

(Ry barking)

Ry?

Where's he goin', after rabbits again?

Ry?

(Ry howling)

You boys stay here.

(Ry whimpering)

Ry!

Come here boy, come here.

(Ry whimpering)

- Guy, call Ry, put him in the wagon.

- Come on, Ry, come on.

That's it, come on.

Let's go Ry, let's go.

Come on, come on.

- What happened? - Come on, let's go.

(dog growling)

(dramatic music)

- Bastard, get outta here (yells).

(dog growling) (dog barking)

Guy, stay in the Scout!

(dog barking) (pensive music)

It's a wild dog, that's all.

Nothin' more.

He's probably starving.

- Maybe you could trap it.

- No, he's too far gone, he's too wild.

I've seen it before, it's more than hunger.

- [Guy] Can we come along?

- No, you stay at home with Ry, you hear?

- Yeah.

- Where did it come from?

- Sometimes they get lost.

Sometimes tourists, they deliberately leave 'em behind.

They pick 'em up at the pound,

they bring 'em over to play with

for the summer and then they leave them here.

- But they'd starve.

- That's right.

(rain pattering)

(Ry whining)

- That'll hurt him.

- It won't hurt near as much as an infection would.

Come on now, Ry.

Ry. Grab him now.

- Now's no time to be walkin', Mr. McMinnimee.

- Ah, it's just a sprinkle.

Wasn't doin' it when I started out.

- It's gettin' late, too.

You goin' over to the store?

- Yeah, see if I've got some mail will ya?

- Sure will.

What tore up Ry?

- Oh, wild dog down at the dump.

Take him on inside, boys.

Let him watch TV, you know what likes to watch.

(Jerry sighs)

- [Clyde] Mr. McMinnimee wants to know if he's got any mail.

- [Jerry] Mr. McMinnimee hasn't had a letter in years.

- He asked me to ask.

- Yeah, I heard him.

- You're touchy today.

- Oh (sighs), the dog at the dump's got me worried.

- Yeah, what kind of a dog is it?

- Just a mixed breed mongrel.

- There's no use goin' out now,

he'd take cover in this rain.

- Yeah, I know, just wanna be ready.

The one today at the dump though, he scared me.

He's a bad one.

I found your horse.

(pensive music)

(dogs growling) (rain pattering)

(music stops)

(pensive music)

(dogs growling)

(dog sniffing)

(mud squelching)

(Flint whining)

(soft music)

(dog growling) (pensive music)

(pack dogs snarling)

- [Clyde] We're all loners,

who else would wanna live here all year?

- [Harry] Pretty isolated

with the ferry coming only once a week.

- Even less than the off season.

But we're here by choice.

I'm a widower, same as Jerry Preston.

Jerry's got a 10 year old,

couple years older than Millie's boy.

Millie's divorced.

- I'm not a widower and I'm not divorced.

I'm a fella that didn't make

the same mistake once (laughing).

- This Jerry fellow, he's a weird one.

He looks like he could take on the world,

but he's stuck himself out here.

- Jerry's been about everywhere and done about everything.

He was with the Alaska Fish and Game for a few years,

Then he tied up with our Fish and Game

and they sent him over here for two years to study shrimp.

- To study shrimp?

- Well, I know it sounds kinda funny

and I did a bit of laughin' about it myself

when I first heard about it,

but if you like a shrimp cocktail every once

in awhile it gets kinda important.

Helpin' to save 'em from dying out is what I mean.

- He's a marine biologist.

- That's his schoolin', Ma'am.

- His two years about up?

- Almost, but he got to kinda likin' it here.

And he met Millie.

Millie's been bringin' her boy up here

for summer vacations the past couple years.

This year they decided not to go back.

Jerry's buildin' a house for the two of 'em, and the boys.

He's gonna stay whether the state job gives out or not.

(Millie exclaiming)

- [Millie] Whew!

- Come on in.

Whew!

That's a hell of a wind, huh?

Rain's lit up, though.

Took Millie and the boys home,

found these two walkin' down the road.

- Oh, I was just takin' the fellas home.

I'll take 'em all home together.

- All right.

- Anything on the dog?

- What dog?

- Oh, that's why I came by.

He's just a stray.

I'll take care of him in the morning.

But if you're goin' fishin',

I wouldn't go out alone until I figure this thing out.

And you shouldn't go walkin' at night either.

- Can't be that much, Tommy.

- Then why are these guys talkin' about it?

- It's just a precaution,

a dog like that's unpredictable.

- I remember readin' about an old lady,

had a doberman for years.

Suddenly one day, it tore her to bits just like that.

- Well, what is this dog, a doberman?

- No, he's mixed, he's just a mongrel.

- Tommy, help Marge get that stuff out of the car, okay?

It's back there in the store.

- Okay.

- Come with me, gentlemen.

- See you all tomorrow.

- Okay.

I think I'll have a quick one.

- I'll get ya a glass.

- McMinnimee. - Hello, Jerry.

- [Jerry] Zsa Zsa.

Mr. Cobb. - Jerry.

(wind whistling)

- [Jim] What happened?

- What happened?

Well, he read for an hour, then he started to talk.

Did you know that wolves mate for life?

And if one of them dies, the other one never mates again?

And people think they're so civilized.

Look at the wolves.

Beautiful.

- You could have stopped all the talking.

- But he's very interesting.

I mean, he just sat and talked.

He didn't even try to grab a tit.

It was kinda nice.

- So, what then?

- So then we decided to take a walk.

We've been walking for two hours.

He can tell you the names of every bird ever made,

even in the dark.

(foreboding music) (wind whistling)

- Hush now, I'll get you somethin'.

(Zsa Zsa growling)

I gotta find some food first.

Just gonna put that on the bureau,

but it's gone from there, damn it.

Pot's where it's supposed to be.

(pensive music)

What now?

It's only the wind, girl.

(Zsa Zsa barking)

You've seen plenty of wind.

(object shatters)

See what you made me do?

You got me nervous with all your fussin'.

(pensive music)

Come on, now.

(Zsa Zsa squealing)

Well, why didn't you say you wanted to go out?

You better squat up wind, girl,

or you'll get your tail wet blowin' like it is.

(Zsa Zsa barking) (dramatic music)

I told ya it'd be too much for ya.

You better go anyway.

(Zsa Zsa barking)

What?

Ya see something?

(barking continues)

Who's out there?

Who's there?

(music continues) (wind whistling)

Damn it!

(Zsa Zsa barking)

(Zsa Zsa snarling)

You'd better speak up or get!

(Zsa Zsa growling)

Zsa Zsa! (dramatic music)

Get back! Out there!

Come back here (speech drowned out by dogs barking)!

Zsa Zsa!

Zsa Zsa!

(dogs squealing)

Zsa Zsa!

(dog howling)

(dogs growling) (dramatic music)

(dog barking)

Zsa Zsa, they killed her!

(shots firing)

(dog whimpering)

(wind whistling)

(lock clicks)

The shells, the shells!

(wind whistling)

(dog snarls) (dramatic music)

Oh my God, that window's open out back,

(suspenseful music)

(glass shattering) (McMinnimee screaming)

(dogs barking) (dramatic music)

(music intensifies)

(gate creaking)

(engine rumbling)

(ducks squawking)

- Come on in, Clyde.

- Morning.

- I gotta go into Jerry's to make a call.

- [Clyde] Hey, sure thing, I'll wait in the car.

- Wait for me, huh?

Jim?

I'm tired of being cooped up in this bank.

- I think I'll go in too.

- If you need anything, I can pick it up for ya.

- No, I just feel like looking around the town.

- Sure.

See ya later.

(birds chirping)

(gun cocks)

(Ry whimpers)

- Oh no, you don't have to hide.

I'm not gon' take you along.

Three legged dog's pretty useless, anyhow.

Had a cat once had three legs.

(gun cocks)

Called him Tripod. (Ry whimpers)

Ry?

You all right?

Shh, shh, shh, shh, shh. (Ry whining)

I think you're sick.

- What's wrong with him?

- I don't know.

- [Clyde] Maybe that bite he got.

- Yeah, could be.

- Mr. Dodge here wants to use your radio phone.

- Morning Jerry.

- Good morning, Mr. Dodge.

Yeah, go right ahead Clyde.

You know how to work it.

- Sure thing.

- Gonna kill that wild dog you were talking about?

- Oh, if I can find it.

- I hope so, I don't like things like that being loose.

- Hey, where you bums goin'?

- Just up to the tree house.

- Well, don't go any further, hear?

- We won't. (radio phone whirring)

- All right, you stay close.

- This is Clyde Hardiman,

Marine Biological Station, Seal Island.

Over.

(static crackling)

I can't get anything on this, but a hum Jerry.

- Well, give it a whack.

(chuckles) Nevermind, I'll do it.

- [Clyde] Called in, but no answer.

I told ya.

- Oh, boy.

- You guys have to be kidding.

(birds chirping)

- Oh, it had to be that wind last night.

This call you gotta get through now, is it an emergency?

- It's important, but not urgent.

- Good, I gotta see about that wild dog.

- [Jim] But I'd appreciate

your fixin' it as soon as possible.

(birds chirping)

(pensive music)

(gentle music)

- Guy?

Oh, Guy?

(Guy growling) (dramatic music)

That's very funny.

Look, I gotta go out for awhile.

You boys don't leave the yard, all right?

- We scared you, didn't we, Dad?

- A little.

(boys laughing)

(waves crashing) (seagulls squawking)

(fishing line whirring)

(fishermen laughing)

(anticipatory music)

- I sure hope you've got something in those pots.

I could use a fresh lobster.

- Yeah, me too.

You know, I was in Los Angeles once

and went to this restaurant, had a sign up.

Lobster House.

Well, what they did to them fine creatures

was a crying shame.

They looked like lobsters.

They was red, but they might as well

have been red building bricks.

- Right.

- I bet they cost you 9.95, too.

- Yeah, made it all the worse.

- Cantankerous old fart.

(Cobb laughs)

(pensive music)

(metal clanging)

(Jerry exhales)

(Jerry sniffs)

- Shew.

(music continues)

(can rattling)

- [Guy] Hey!

(ducks quacking)

(pensive music)

- Go on, get outta there.

Get!

Go on, go.

Go!

(dog growling)

(dog barking)

(dramatic music)

(dogs barking) (Millie gasping)

(horn honking) (barking continues)

(shots firing) (horn blaring)

- Millie!

Millie?

Millie? (Millie gasping)

Come on.

It's all right, Millie, they're gone.

You all right?

They bite you?

(Millie crying)

Come on, you're all right.

Come on.

Come on, let's go.

Come on.

I'm gonna kill those bastards.

(Millie crying)

Get in.

- Where are the boys? - They're all right.

They're at the tree house.

Come on. (door banging)

I don't think the dogs would chance goin' into the village.

(engine rumbling)

- [Clyde] (chuckles) Did you hear those shots?

- Dead dog.

- Maybe he missed.

(typewriter keys clacking)

- Why don't you kids go out and get some fresh air?

You've been stuck in this cabin.

You've hardly seen the country.

- It's pretty.

- How could it help but be pretty

with the birds and the trees?

- I haven't seen one God damn bird.

- Well, damn.

Tommy ought to take you out to look around.

- Quit leaning on me.

(book thuds)

โ™ช Into the woods we go, gathering our nuts in May โ™ช

(birds chirping)

(engine rumbling)

- Millie just got attacked by a pack of dogs.

- Christ, how many?

- [Jerry] About 15, 16.

- My God, in brought daylight?

They must be starving.

- [Jerry] They've gone berserk.

- [Millie] They're not here.

- Look, I'll find 'em.

Look, stay with Millie.

If we can get that radio working,

we can get a boat and here and get people outta here.

I think the ladder's out in back, okay?

- Yeah, all right.

(engine rumbling)

(gentle music)

(horn honking)

- Guy, Paul, y'all come on down.

Guy?

(birds chirping)

Damn it!

Fool kids.

Guy?

You better get it in here!

Now!

All right, Guy, you're askin' for it.

(water splashing)

- Whew!

We don't have to do anything.

We can just sit and talk, do you know what I mean?

I can tell your father it was all just fine.

(Lois sighs)

- [Tommy] I don't like being pushed.

I hate the way he shoves me around.

He's always doing that.

- I know.

- (sighs) I have nothing against you.

It's just my father always spoils everything.

I mean, when he's had a car a couple years

then he gives it to me, you know what I mean?

(dogs howling)

- [Jerry] Hey, Guy!

(howling continues)

- There's more than one.

Jerry said there was only one.

- I thought they only yelled like that

when there was a full moon,

or when they heard a fire engine.

- We should go back.

(twig snapping)

(dog whining)

- Wait for me.

- [Tommy] Come on.

- What?

They must have gone away.

(dog howling)

(dramatic music)

Hey, don't run.

(music continues)

Tommy!

Tommy!

Tommy!

Tommy!

(Lois screams) (twig snaps)

(water splashing)

(music continues)

(branches snapping)

(Lois whimpering)

(music intensifying)

(branches rustling)

(dogs growling) (music continues)

(twigs snapping) (music continues)

(dogs snarling)

(dogs barking)

(Tommy grunts)

(music continues) (barking continues)

(Tommy screams)

(Tommy thuds) (waves splashing)

(water splashing)

- Well, I found 'em.

- Good.

She sat down to worry, but not for long.

- Okay, thank you.

- I'm workin' on the antenna.

- Okay.

- [Clyde] You too ought to have your butts burned.

- Millie? - Hm?

- Millie, wake up.

Look at there.

- Oh, Paul.

(sniffling) Thank God you're all right.

The things I thought.

Why'd you go runnin' off like that, huh?

Didn't Jerry tell you to stay put, didn't he?

Don't you ever do that again, do you understand me?

- Millie, it's all right.

I've gave him a little hell already,

think they're getting the idea.

- [Millie] I just thank the Lord that you're both okay.

- That's all right.

Stay close.

(door banging)

(tool clinking)

It's gettin' dark, gonna need the flashlight.

- I'm gonna need more than that.

This ceramic insulator is broken.

The whole bottom of the mass is snapped.

- You see McMinnimee?

- Nope, I figured he's home with the cold

the way he went out.

- What about Cobb?

- He went fishin'.

I've done about all I can up here.

I'm gonna have to build a part for this.

- All right.

You wanna warn the bankers?

I'm gonna go look in on McMinnimee.

Tell those bankers they can come on in if they want to.

We'll make room for 'em somehow.

- [Clyde] Yeah.

- All right, I left my truck up by the tree house.

(Lois panting) (birds chirping)

(Lois groans)

(door creaking)

(pensive music) (Lois sobbing softly)

(engine rumbling)

(wind howling)

(door bangs)

- God.

McMinnimee?

McMinnimee?

(pensive music)

(gun cocks)

McMinnimee?

(wind chimes clinking) (music continues)

(leaves rustling)

(music intensifies)

(plank creaking)

(leaves rustling) (shot firing)

(pensive music)

(wood creaking)

(engine rumbling) (dramatic music)

(dogs snarling) (wind whistling)

- [Jim] Tommy?

- No sign of him.

- That crazy kid.

He's no woodsman.

- Shouldn't have forced him out.

- I wouldn't expect him to take a hike.

A little walk with Lois for Christ's sakes.

What does it take?

- He was angry.

- Are you trying to blame me?

Any fool with a brain would know better

than to go very far and stay out after it's dark.

- They could have gone into town.

- Two and a half miles?

(engine rumbling)

- [Clyde] What are you people doing out in this wind?

- Tommy and Lois wandered off so far

they must have gotten lost,

- How long ago was that?

- At least three hours.

What can we do?

- Not much tonight.

I came to take you into the filling.

- Did the warden kill that dog?

One of 'em.

- Are you saying there's more than one?

- That's what I came to tell ya.

Look, you wanna come with me or stay here?

You'll be okay if you lock yourselves in the cabin.

- What about Tommy?

- And Lois?

- There's no way.

I wouldn't go searchin' tonight.

- We can light a bonfire here in the yard.

Maybe they'd see it.

- No, you're liable to burn down

on the whole island in this wind.

- Well, where's Jerry?

What the hell is he doing?

- He's out checking up on McMinnimee,

he's probably back by now.

Look, you comin' with me or not?

- I wanna talk to Jerry.

- [Clyde] Then get in.

(doors banging)

(suspenseful music)

(dogs snarling) (dramatic music)

(men chattering faintly) (rain pattering)

- It's more than starvation, that's bad enough.

I bet you a couple of those dogs are rabid.

That early stages of rabies

when they get aggressive,

later on they become loners and lead the pack.

- I don't give a good God damn about later on.

Are you gonna do something?

My son is out there.

Isn't the man from the Fish and Game Department

supposed to deal with animals?

I thought he was.

You've got these dogs running loose out there,

and you're just sitting here.

- Mister, there was nothin' to deal with

until a couple of hours ago.

- Jesus Christ,

- Look, most of those dogs

were just tourist's pets until a few weeks ago.

I'm not tryin' to make excuses,

but getting hysterical is not gonna find Tommy or Lois.

- Well, if he's got any sense, he'll climb a tree,

if he can get his fat ass off the ground.

- [Jim] Damn you.

- All right, let's calm down (sighs).

Those dogs, they wouldn't be out in the rain.

They'd hold up somewhere.

The Parker place, I was out there today.

It has a smell.

- Maybe they're holdin' up there.

- Yeah, they might be.

You got a shotgun, Cobb?

- The old single shot,

but only got a half a dozen shells, though.

- Why don't you go get it and then come back here.

- Clyde, Mr. Dodge,

let's go look at that Parker place.

Mr. Walker, you stay here with the girls, okay?

You keep this place locked up.

(rain pattering) (wind whistling)

Clyde, you wanna grab those rifle shells over there?

(door closes)

- Want me to get my truck?

- Yeah, we're gonna need all the light we can get.

Why don't you grab that flashlight down there,

the long one there.

Okay?

- Take care. - Don't worry, I will.

(wind whistling) (rain pattering)

(engine rumbling)

(wipers whirring)

(doors banging)

(dogs barking)

(shot firing) (dog squealing)

(dogs barking)

- You'd better give me that rifle.

- No!

I'm keeping it.

- You better watch where you point that thing.

(pensive music) (rain pattering)

Take a look, Clyde.

(Jim screams)

Stay back, Clyde.

It's Lois.

- Will you look for Tommy?

Look for Tommy!

(solemn music)

(Jim panting)

- He's not here.

(door creaking) (rain pattering)

Oh, shit.

(engine rumbling)

- [Clyde] Now what the hell is he doing?

(engine revving)

(dramatic music)

- Bastards!

I'll kill 'em, I'll kill 'em!

- He's crazy.

- I'll kill him for what he's done.

I'll get 'em.

(dramatic music) (rain pattering)

Bastards!

(dogs barking)

(lattice clattering)

God, dogs!

(dogs barking)

(engine rumbling) (dog snarling)

Bastards!

(music continues) (barking continues)

(engine revving)

(music continues) (barking continues)

(engine stalling)

- Damn you!

(dramatic music)

(shot firing)

- God damn! Where are ya?

(suspenseful music)

(dog snarling)

(Jim yelling) (dramatic music)

- Hey Clyde, over there.

(dogs snarling) (Jim yelling)

(dogs barking)

(static crackling)

- This is Marine Biological Survey Station, Seal Island,

calling the Coast Guard at Point Carlsburg,

or anybody else who reads me.

Over.

(static crackling)

This is Marine Biological Survey Station, Seal Island.

This is an emergency.

If anybody reads me, contact the Coast Guard.

Over.

(static crackling)

(Marge sighs) (Waves splashing)

- Marge?

- Yes?

(Tommy inhales shakily)

- Kill me (wheezing).

- I'm sorry.

- Kill me.

- He lost all the fingers on one hand,

a couple on the other.

His eye sight's gone.

But we don't know his blood type

so do not send whole blood, send plasma.

Look, I can't receive on this rig,

but if you're receiving me, please send help immediately.

This is Jerry Preston signing off.

- I've been thinkin', I'd give it a try at rowin' over.

- Well, that's 18 miles of water.

- I did it once.

- How long ago was that, 20 years?

If somebody's gonna try, it better be me.

- Outta ways the sea'll be up,

what with the weather we've been havin'.

And you don't know anything about a thing like that.

- Maybe I get picked up by a boat.

- Yeah, maybe.

But you could get lost in the dark, too.

I got my slicker in the boat,

I'll be takin' some oranges.

- Let's go down to the dock with him.

- Dad?

- Yeah?

- I think the man's dead.

- What makes you say that?

- Because he's not breathing.

- That about makes you bank president, don't it?

- That's in damn poor taste, Mr. Cobb!

- It's hard for me to get upset when a fool died.

- Jerry.

- Well, good luck, Carl.

- If we can hold up until the ferry gets here, four days,

got plenty of food.

- Yeah, but look at here.

- We've only got four shells.

- Come on Hardiman, get your ass in gear.

- [Clyde] Okay, Cobb, don't bust a gut.

I'm on my way.

Let's go.

(door banging)

- I'm gonna go up keep an eye on 'em.

- Okay.

- Can we get Ry outta the way boys?

Watch the stairs now, watch out.

- [Guy] Get up here.

(stairs thudding)

(pensive music) (seagulls squawking)

- All right, we gotta barricade this place.

They came through McMinnimee's windows,

they can sure as hell come through ours.

(stairs thudding)

Shove furniture and stuff up against it.

(dog howls)

(anticipatory music)

Here he comes.

(dog barking) (pensive music)

(Ry barking)

- I don't know where he is,

but he's close enough not to need to go lookin' for him.

- He's at the bottom of the hill there.

(Ry barking)

All right, we gotta clean this furniture off

and stack it against windows.

Let's go, come on, move.

(objects clattering) (Ry barks)

(Jerry speaking indistinctly)

(water splashing)

(Cobb gasping)

(birds chirping)

(Marge screaming) (pensive music)

- What is it?

- The dog, it's there.

- [Millie] It's all right, it's all right.

(music continues)

- It's gone.

- It was there!

You're always too late.

(Marge crying)

- Marge!

(Marge sobbing)

- Well, I guess we know what we have to do.

Boys, keep barricadin' those windows up front.

Help me put this chest over that window.

- Push, push it.

(Ry barking)

- Ry, what you got goin'?

Get the shotgun.

Good boy, come on.

(Ry growling)

- If we get the leader, I think the rest will scatter.

- He's cagey, seems to know.

- He's probably runnin' loose quite awhile.

Bastard survived and he's learned.

- Comin' in like this in broad daylight.

- It should be apparent why.

We've got to get the body out.

- Yeah, we thought of that.

- Yeah.

They've had a taste.

(Ry barking)

(glass shattering)

(dramatic music) (Jerry yelling indistinctly)

- [Jerry] Hang on, I've got it!

(Jerry yelling indistinctly) (dogs snarling)

- Shoot him, shoot him!

(glass shattering)

- Look at you!

(dogs snarling) (group yelling indistinctly)

- [Jerry] Get out!

(dogs barking)

- Get him!

(Jerry speaking indistinctly)

- Get! Get out!

Get out!

(dogs barking)

(Jim yelling)

(dramatic music builds) (barking continues)

(glass shatters)

(Millie groaning)

- Bad dog, bad dog, bad dog!

(shot firing)

Bastard!

(dogs barking) (group yelling indistinctly)

(glass shatters)

What the hell?

(Ry barking)

Ry, get back in here!

(dogs barking) (dramatic music)

(dog snarling)

- Jerry!

Jerry, here!

- Drop down!

(shot firing)

(dog yelps) (dramatic music)

Gee! - We got him!

(music fades)

(Jerry exhales)

- I heard a couple of shots, did you get the leader?

- Didn't get that mongrel.

We gotta board these windows up better.

And we got to get Dodge's body outta here.

(solemn music) (crickets chirping)

We keep the torches lit, we'll be all right.

Go ahead, Guy.

(music continues) (crickets chirping)

(pensive music) (waves splashing)

That's far enough, Clyde.

(Jerry exhales)

Does anyone want to say anything?

Mr. Walker?

(wind whistling)

Marge?

Wanna give us a hand?

We'll lift him up, put him right over there.

All right?

(all grunting)

Turn.

(water splashing)

(solemn music)

Let's go, Guy.

Come on everybody.

Stay close, Guy.

(anticipatory music)

(fire sizzling)

(door closes) (lock clicks)

Well, Clyde, gimme a hand.

- All we gotta do is hang on for three more days

till the ferry gets here.

Sooner if Cobb makes it.

- Well, it's not home,

but I think there's some blankets in the back.

- Okay, we can break up into three guard shifts.

I'll take the first one to round one.

Clyde, you take the second one?

- I'll take the third.

- Okay.

- Is it all right if I stay with you, Dad?

- Hm.

- Can Paul stay with us?

- I'd kinda like to have Paul with me.

- Aw, Ma. - Come on, kiddo.

- Millie? - Hm?

- You holdin' up okay? - Mm hm.

Don't worry.

- I love you.

- I love you, too.

You want the front room or the back?

- I'll take the back.

(Jerry sighs)

- Me and my umbrella, we did okay.

You got no doubts about this place?

We've been holdin' up for three days.

- Oh, I got plenty of doubts, but not any better ideas.

If you have somethin', tell me.

- I'll let you know.

You don't get too comfortable, or you'll fall asleep.

- Oh, I won't.

- Yeah, stay up.

(Jerry sighs)

(pensive music) (waves splashing)

- [Fisherman 1] Is he alive?

- [Fisherman 2] Yeah, but somethin's wrong.

I don't know.

It looks like a heart attack or a stroke or somethin'.

- [Fisherman 1] Don't move him, we'll tow him in.

(boat whirring)

(boat horn honking)

(birds chirping)

(boat whirring)

- Help!

We need help!

Help!

- Hey, look up top.

- Hey, we need help!

- Show him your wake.

- Hey!

No!

(shot firing)

(boaters laughing)

Come back!

(Walker sighs)

(waves splashing)

(dogs growling)

- Walker?

(dramatic music) (dogs growling)

Walker?

Walker?

That idiot, went out and left the door open.

He even took the shotgun with him.

- Yeah, I heard a shot!

- Walker!

- Sounds like the noise is down near the pier.

- Damn!

Keep everybody in the house, Clyde.

- Come on, come on.

Come on, Ry, let's go.

Come on. - Stupid fool.

(engine rumbling)

- Stay back or I'll kill ya!

All right, dogs?

Back!

(Walker screams)

(dogs barking) (water splashing)

(engine rumbling)

(dramatic music)

(dogs whimpering) (music intensifies)

- Walker?

- Yes!

- Can you swim?

- No.

(waves crashing)

- Grab.

Here you go.

All right, pull.

Come on.

Come on. - Pull!

- Come on! - I don't think I can hang on!

- You've gotta hang on, you're gonna drown.

Well, come on, man.

We don't know if they'll come back, or not.

Come on. - Jesus.

- Come on, get in the car, come on.

- Hey!

There's a boat!

There was a boat out there.

- Where's the shot gun?

You lose our shot gun didn't you?

(engine rumbling)

(boardwalk creaking)

(tires screeching)

(pensive music)

- Well, I see you found my banker.

- Unhappily, yes.

All right I'm gonna tell everybody what to do

and there's no time to discuss it.

Millie, those dogs are down at holler flat.

They can smell right outside.

Millie?

- [Millie] Yeah.

- I want you to take all of our stuff,

go the other end of the island.

You take Marge, Walker, the kids and Ry with you.

Let's go, come on. - All right.

You run into

any kind of trouble, - Move it.

- You stay in that truck, hear?

Come on Mr. Walker, we're leavin'.

- Marge, come on.

- You want me to go with the women and children?

- We don't have time to mess around.

I don't want them to follow Millie.

You know where the gas drum is inside of the house?

- Yeah.

- Okay, I want you in the Jeep.

All right, go fast.

- I'm goin'. - Get goin'.

Go fast.

- I'm gon' lure them inside the house.

The last one's in there, you blockade up that door, okay?

Then you douse the house with gas,

and when I tell you to, light it.

- Jerry?

- Get inside the car and don't let 'em see ya.

Get down. - I won't.

- Roll up the window.

(hand banging)

(wind whistling)

(dog growling)

Come on.

(dog growling) (dramatic music)

Come on!

(dog barking)

You want some of me? Come on!

(dramatic music) (dogs barking)

(Flint whines)

(barking continues) (music continues)

- Christ.

(dogs barking) (Jerry straining)

(dramatic music continues)

(gas sloshing)

(music continues) (barking continues)

(dog yelps)

(Jerry straining) (dogs growling)

(glass shatters)

- Light it! Light it!

- Jump!

Jump!

(dogs barking) (dramatic music)

(Jerry straining)

(stick clattering)

(dog barking)

(Jerry yells)

Come on!

(glass shatters)

(dramatic music) (dogs barking)

- Down!

(dog yelps)

- [Jerry] Oh, God.

(fire crackling)

(solemn music)

(explosion booming)

- [Millie] Jerry, Jerry?

- Why'd you come back?

- We saw the smoke.

- They're in there.

(fire crackling)

(anticipatory music)

(Flint whining)

(Flint barking)

Walker, put it down.

That's enough.

(Flint whining)

(Flint barking)

Go sit down.

Guy, bring me those crackers outta that glove compartment.

(Flint whining)

Easy boy, easy.

Come on boy.

I'm not gonna hurt ya, come on.

I won't let him hurt ya, come on.

Good boy.

Here.

Come on, I won't hurt ya.

(Flint whining) (gentle music)

It's all right, come on, it's all right.

Come here.

(Flint barking)

Look here, look here.

Come on.

(Flint yapping)

Look here.

Good stuff.

Here, come on.

Go on.

Try it.

See?

Good for ya.

Easy.

(Flint barking)

Come on, now.

I'm not gonna hurt ya.

Come on.

That's a good boy.

(Flint barking)

(Flint whimpering)

(soft inspirational music)

(music fades)
