to so many childhood memories
in Mississippi.

James Brown has been
a staple in my family.

We used to have these
family fish fries

at my Aunt Pat
and Uncle Steve's house

and my Great-Grandma Shug
would be dancing,

and I would be acting
like I'm James Brown,

falling over,
putting the cape over me.

My grandma and my aunt were
two of my biggest supporters

when it came to my music.

My great-grandma passed in 2011

and my Aunt Pat was diagnosed
with pancreatic cancer.

By the time I sing this song
onstage, she'll be in heaven.

The fact that she'll
be watching from heaven

with Grandma Shug is going to be
very, very, very special.

in my life,

our own paths

he was a full-time cattle farmer

in Charlotte Courthouse,
Virginia,

so I grew up
around many cows.

My family, we all go to the farm
as much as we can.

Dad was all the time
working with the cows,

working in the hay fields.

We had about
300 head of cattle

at the height of the farm.

to feel obligated

to having to work
on the farm.

So I would play my guitar,

play piano for hours
as a kid.

with lung cancer,

and over the course
of 6 months, it took him.

That was a
pretty devastating blow.

To this day,
I think about him all the time.

I know that
he would be proud

and excited to know

I went through all
of those dark moments

that now I can share,

that I can be vulnerable
and I can be open about

to bring an all around
