A cheese mold still happens,

femicide still occurs.

A lot of times the customs and traditions that we have

from our heritage can also like marginalize

and hold us back from being able to acquire the rights

that we deserve as human beings.

Sin derechos no hay paraíso, es

una serie que yo empecé en el 2021.

Comenzó conociendo amigas que yo

ya tenían por Instagram en Oaxaca.

La serie en sí no es acerca de la musheidad,

es acerca del tercer género en todo el estado de Oaxaca,

porque para uno considerarse mushe

tiene que ser delismo de juchitan.

Aquí al frente tenemos una foto de mi amiga de ORA.

De ORA aquí estaba cumpliendo sus 60

años, o estaba punta cumplir 60 años.

Pero la pieza que tiene puesta es

diseñada por el artesano Roberto Jiménez,

que es su pareja de 28 años.

Juntos ellos han construido estas

piezas para artistas como Lil Adowns,

otros cantantes famosos,

pero en sí cuando yo al principio le

comenté a ORA que quería hacer este proyecto,

ORA me dijo que ella nunca había tenido la oportunidad de

ponerse uno de sus propios trajes.

Cuando hicimos la comisión para este traje lo hicieron más

grande de lo que debería de ser,

porque es como darle un

rendimiento a la identidad de ella misma,

quien es afrodescendiente y quien es ella misma.

Es líder de la comunidad y para mí siempre fue importante

incluir el aspecto de la iglesia,

por eso fue que la fotografiamos al frente de la iglesia de

Santo Domingo en la ciudad de Oaxaca.

Y Naomi aquí me dice que es la reina, ¿verdad?

Naomi, este año va a ser coronada la reina de las

auténticas intrépidas buscadores del peligro.

En sí, Naomi tiene una relación muy especial con la muerte.

Queríamos traer el barro negro, que es un

artisanía clásica de las costumbres de Oaxaca.

Queríamos también traer un poquito de la sensualidad, lo

que es ser una persona mushe,

porque muchas veces el

eroticismo, la musheidad no se llevan a par

por los estímas que hay cuando

se trata de el trabajo sexual.

Para esta foto en particular, queríamos

representar un poco también del comercialismo

que se puede hacer con una imagen de

una persona que no es eurocentrista.

¿Qué es esta pieza?

Caricia fue la primera mushe que

ganó una carrera política en su pueblo.

Caricia, cuando la conocí,

estábamos en una conferencia de prensa

que estábamos hablando de cómo...

But, Karissa was the first person to ever

get married also as mousheh in the church,

other artists and we have a residency

every single three months. We're one of the few, I guess,

here in the Bronx, especially in the

South Bronx. So we're definitely about nurturing the

artists, the art from our community, especially

black, indigenous, and people of color.

François y Midsari, ambas vienen de Juchitán.

La diferencia es que François

fue nacida y criada en Juchitán

y el residente de Juchitán.

Midsari, cuando estaba más joven, le

tocó mudarse en la Ciudad de México.

Pues la diferencia es que

muchas personas tienen que emigrar.

Lo importante para la mujer juchiteca es que las mushes

sean auténticamente de Juchitán.

A mí lo que me gusta de esta foto es que está una

representación de la mujer juchiteca,

que es François y también está Midsari, que también es

juchiteca, pero también es inmigrante.

Las dos convienen y vuelven a

llegar juntas al mismo de Tejuan Tepec

para la fiesta de las auténticas

intrepidas buscadoras de peligro.

Es una muy bonita reconciliación en esta foto para mí.

Machete al Machote es un retrato de mi amiga, Shanery.

La primera vez que yo llegué a

Oaxaca empezamos a conversar sobre mesa

acerca de muchas de las cosas que están

enfrentando las personas transsexuales

y las personas mushes y las

personas de género no conforme en Oaxaca,

que son parecidas a las que también se reconocen acá.

Sigue siendo un feminicidio.

En esta foto lo que queríamos

hacer es darle la oportunidad a Shanery

de tener ese impacto de rebeldía utilizando el machete,

pero a la misma vez decirle en su

imagen que aunque uno sea presente femenino,

no quiere decir que no tenga la sustancia

para uno levantar armas cuando se necesite,

para uno puede se defender a uno mismo.

En otras palabras, es decir que las mujeres no somos

débiles solo por ser mujeres.

El nombre de Machete al Machote viene de

protestas que hubo en la ciudad de Oaxaca.

El nombre estaba escrito en las paredes de Zócalo.

Entonces yo dije no hay mejor nombre

para esta foto que pues Machete al Machote.

Sapotec language has no gender.

He was saying that the Western media has not covered.

So for the most part, Western media has covered La Muche

d'Arre as being some sort of paradise.

Since the Sapotec has no binary in it, a lot of times they

feel like that because there is a place,

there has been a place for Muches in the community that

there's some sort of paradise.

But that's completely far from the truth

because, you know, machismo still happens,

femicide still occurs. A lot of times the customs and

traditions that we have from our heritage

can also like marginalize and hold us back

from being able to acquire the rights that

we deserve as human beings. How do you, I know that you

mentioned that it was through

Instagram that you started getting interested, but tell me

a story, anyone that contacted you that

led you to this amazing and beautiful project. Yeah, so

Shanani was the first person that I

met through Instagram. On my first trip, I actually went

and we started discussing about,

you know, what we wanted to shoot. We needed a makeup

artist, you know, big production.

And so Shanani introduced me to her friend Amitai. And

Amitai was the reigning queen of

Las Authenticas Intrepidas Buscadres de Pelido that year.

She's also an amazing drag artist and she's

an amazing makeup artist. When we got together, we started

thinking about location. They introduced

me to their friend Mario Kome Oaxaca, who is an amazing

tour guide and a chef. And anyone that

goes to Oaxaca, I highly recommend that you visit Mario

Kome Oaxaca. And Mario gave us essentially

the location of the field of the magué. Together, the

three of us essentially had a great afternoon

just talking about what it's like to be third gender, what

it's like to be moushe, what it's

like to also not be moushe. Because for example, Mario is

not from Huchitan, Mario is from the

mixteca, and Mario doesn't claim that title of moushe, but

still faces the same lack of rights

that everybody else has. Yeah, so that's how kind of like

the ball started rolling. And then after

that, I was invited to come to the annual party and actual

Huchitan. And that's when I came back

on my second trip to go and actually visit the girls in

Huchitan. From that trip, they actually

invited me to come a third time to go present some of these

photographs in Huchitan, which is

coming up in November. That's beautiful. Thank you for

giving us a chain of your time. No, I am

so grateful that I took the opportunity to come to see you.

And I'm glad that you reached to me

and gave us this beautiful opportunity before the time that
