(An adaptation of "Immortality" by Chen Dong of Webnovel of China Literature)

(The Eternal Strife)

(Episode 9)

Master.

What brings you here

in such haste?

I came bearing urgent news.

Moments ago, I was informed

that Dugu Baitian, on his way to Breeze Kingdom,

engaged Reverend Graybeard, headman of Skyfall Palace.

After withstanding several moves of Skyfall Iciclestorm,

he fell into the river

and went missing.

Even that old geezer failed to end his life?

The chill skill of Skyfall Palace is quite powerful,

but he actually survived several moves from the repertoire.

It would seem

he's under the aegis of someone's Essence.

Not only that,

the martial skills he performed were unheard of.

A nobody

attained such martial prowess in such a short time.

I'm afraid

it'll jeopardize the order in the martial world.

Which is why I must acquire that Essence.

You're to depart with me immediately.

Previously, when forging a truce with Baiyue Kingdom,

the monarch of Breeze Kingdom got a favor from me.

The time has come

for him to repay me.

As you command.

Gee up!

Gee up!

Gee up!

Gee up!

Gee up!

Gee up!

Out of the way!

Master Fang, what's going on?

Have some men guard the doors.

Nobody goes in without my permission.

Yes…

Hurry up!

I'll have your head if your lateness hinders me from saving him!

Saving him?

The general is saved!

You've suffered so much.

Am I mistaken?

This is not Whitejade Ice.

No…

I owe Adoptive Father everything,

and Breeze Kingdom cannot afford to lose its War God.

I, Li Fang,

will earn my adoptive father a chance of survival,

even if it costs me

all my martial prowess.

I owe Adoptive Father everything.

Concentrate.

- Or you might lose yourself to darkness. - And Breeze Kingdom

cannot afford to lose its War God.

War God of Breeze Kingdom?

Is he referring

to General Li Lin of Breeze Kingdom?

Clear your mind and stabilize your chi.

Sir,

my grandfather once told me

General Li Lin served his country and his people all his life,

that he's a real hero.

A man like him doesn't deserve to die like this.

Please help me save him for this man.

If you spend part of the Essence to save him,

the chillness in you might give you a relapse at any moment,

causing your inner demon to invade your body.

It's a man's life we're talking about…

Fine.

It's completely irresponsive.

Is this really not Whitejade Ice?

What should I do?

Essence!

This is Essence!

Adoptive Father's saved.

Adoptive Father's saved.

How's General Li Lin?

My adoptive father's injury is healing.

Let's give him a few days' rest cure.

Divine intervention. This is definitely divine intervention.

His Majesty awaits you in the antechamber.

His Majesty?

I'm honored to kneel before Your Majesty.

Rise.

I heard

you obtained a Whitejade Ice by serendipity,

which could save General Li Lin's life.

How's General Li Lin now?

My adoptive father's getting better.

The Baiyue army was forced to retreat

solely because General Li Lin personally led our troops.

Since he's getting better,

I suggest we hold a banquet in his residence tonight

to celebrate his upcoming recovery.

How does that sound to you?

My adoptive father's still recovering.

How about we wait another few days?

While General Li Lin is bedridden,

tongues have been wagging all over the streets.

We hold this banquet

not only to celebrate General Li Lin's upcoming recovery

but also to offer our people

a pick-me-up.

Our country

cannot withstand another upheaval.

Yes.

It's said Skyfall Palace has put a bounty on a youngster lately.

That geezer Graybeard is really losing his touch.

After so many years, he still can't reach Emperor level, and now a youngling has gotten the better of him.

Oh, you're Miss Situ.

Miss Situ,

your father told me

you went to Peerless Kingdom to study.

My father wrote to me,

saying that the general suffered a relapse.

The news worried me,

so I came here to check on him.

My adoptive father's getting better.

Later, you may go to the rear yard to visit him.

I'm sure he'll be very happy to see you.

Sorry to disturb you.

Headman Ling,

I didn't bargain on your visit.

General Li Lin

is a pillar of Breeze Kingdom,

and Mistcoil Ridge always values world peace,

so I, naturally, want General Li Lin to be in good health.

His Majesty approaches!

Long live Your Majesty.

Ling Fei of Mistcoil Ridge

bows before Your Majesty.

Rise, everybody.

No need for formalities.

Today,

let's forget about our ranks.

You may drink to your heart's content.

Let nothing confine your enjoyment.

Headman Ling,

in this battle,

the efforts of your sect and Skyfall Palace to mediate

saved us from suffering heavier casualties.

Your Majesty overpraises me.

It's always been my sect's bounden duty to maintain world peace.

Compared with what General Li Lin did for Breeze Kingdom,

my efforts were nothing.

Ha ha…

You're being overmodest.

Well, together, let us

wish General Li Lin good health.

May the world never see another war.

May our country have everlasting prosperity.

May General Li Lin

be in good health.

May the world never see another war.

May our country have everlasting prosperity.

Master.

Thank you all for attending this banquet

to celebrate my adoptive father's upcoming recovery.

Admission is by invitation only.

How could you not invite any people from Baiyue Kingdom

to the funeral of that viper Li Lin?

I stayed in this country

specially to drink a toast to his death.

Li Chang!

His Majesty presides over this banquet. Show some respect!

Our countries have only just agreed to a truce,

and now you're here stirring up trouble.

What are you up to?

Humph.

Our several-hundred-thousand-strong army took half of your country.

Were it not for that your adoptive father

assassinated our invincible commander,

Marshal Ling Tian,

your country

would've long since been subjugated.

What's wrong with me calling him a viper

after he resorted to such despicable means?

Then you came to the wrong place.

We're holding this banquet

to celebrate my adoptive father's recovery,

and the wine you drank

was meant as a celebration of it.

Li Lin suffered a relapse,

and all renowned physicians were powerless to cure him.

There's no way he could've suddenly recovered.

I think that geezer's dying,

and you people are putting up a show

to conceal the truth.

Why else is he absent

from this banquet?

General Li Lin has only just recovered

and needs more rest.

Li Chang,

the war has only just ended.

What's the point of raking up the past for more trouble?

Say no more, Headman Ling.

Li Lin is a mortal enemy of mine.

Since he's recovered,

I'd like Headman Ling

to bear witness for me.

In three days,

I shall revisit this residence,

and when I do,

I'll slay Li Lin with my bare hands

to comfort my risen and ascended martial master.

Adieu.

Will the general fully recover in three days?

I have some precious medications in my sect.

They might prove helpful.

Three days…

I think my adoptive father will have recovered by then.

Then let's wish General Li Lin

a sooner recovery.

May General Li Lin recover soon.

If this is really a 1,000-year-old Whitejade Ice formed by a Saint's remains,

then maybe

it can help Baitian subdue the darkness in him.

If I take this,

I won't have to follow Xiao Liang's plan.

But why did the people of Mistcoil Ridge come here as well?

Are they here for Whitejade Ice?

Or are they

trailing Baitian?

Can it be that…

Mingyue?

What are you doing here?

How did you come to be here?

Where's the 1,000-year-old ice block?

What ice block?

I'm here to nurse General Li Lin's injury.

You are here to…

nurse General Li Lin's injury?

Long story.

Anyway, I'm the one

who's been nursing his injury all this time.

Next, I'll request him to take me on as his apprentice.

Such being the case,

let me check your Psyche.

Mingyue,

you…

Are you sure you heard someone speaking in the room?

Let's go.

Where's the Whitejade Ice?

Give chase!

No need.

Adoptive Father.

Just now the immortal in the ice broke out,

which woke me up.

His choosing to leave

means he doesn't want to meet us. There's no need to give chase.

Congratulations on your recovery, General.

But your son is just looking out for this country's best interest.

The immortal possesses godlike powers.

Should he stay in Breeze Kingdom,

it'll undoubtedly be a good thing.

Headman Ling,

you said it yourself that he possessed godlike powers.

Mortals like us cannot bend him to our will.

About the immortal,

we may just let nature run its course.

As for you, General,

I was worried about your upcoming duel with Li Chang,

but now that you've come around,

I can finally dismiss my concerns.

General Li,

go share the good news with the others.

Yes, sire.

- Nurse yourself back to health, General. - Yes, sire.

Mingyue,

are you okay?

Those people kicked up a stink at the banquet.

There are secret forces at work here.

You should leave immediately.

As for the matter of seeking an apprenticeship,

you may come back tomorrow.

Great.

Baitian's Psyche is very clear,

and he's made rapid progress in martial arts.

He can protect himself now.

Have you guys heard?

General Li Lin

was saved by a Saint-level master who broke out of ice.

Why did I hear

that his savior was a matchlessly beautiful girl?

Rumor has it she waited 4,000 years

for this opportunity.

Why did I hear

that the world's about to descend into chaos?

It was I who broke out of an ice block.

These people's imagination's working overtime.

Buddy,

please inform General Li Lin

that his old friend Dugu Feiyu's grandson requests an audience with him.
