It's funny how one little thing

can trigger so many memories.

Life used to be simple.

We were 13.

working in a stinky marina
for less than minimum wage.

And why?

Because when you decide you
want to change your life,

sometimes your life changes you instead.

I spent the next month
working at the marina,

as the summer was winding down.

It was kind of nice.

There was a calmness about it.

It felt simple.

It's funny, the longer I worked there,

the more I started to appreciate Max,

how hard he worked, what
a good person he was.

Stepping into his life made it feel

like he was there with me.

But, he wasn't.

- I'm sorry.

- No.

- Tell him.

- No.

Just hold him gently in your hand.

That's good.

Just like that.

I didn't know if I was

saying that to the fish,

or to my Dad,

but it just felt right.

Marcy and I were pretty much inseparable

for the last bit of the summer.

No, it's called a gearbox.

It's the lower part of the outboard motor.

It's near the propeller doohickey.

You really couldn't care less could you?

No, but I think it's
awesome that you're into it.

I totally see why Max loved it.

Heard any word?

Nothing.

I really messed up didn't I?

Oh honey, of course you did.

Thanks.

But it'll be okay.

She and
Jackson didn't work out.

No big surprise.

And I loved sitting in that boat,

my boat, with Marcy Spencer.

It turns out we were more
similar than I'd realized.

She hadn't taken anything from me.

In fact, it was exactly the opposite.

It's amazing how our
perceptions of other people

are sometimes based on
the mess in our own heads.

So what are you
gonna do when the winter hits?

Put on a jacket.

You guys can't stay
in that camper in the winter.

Well, we haven't
thought that far ahead.

We'll figure it out.

We always do.

Well, I talked to my Dad,

and he said you guys are welcome to stay

in the cottage if you want.

It's a good idea, you should do it.

We won't be up all winter,
so it'll just sit empty.

- It's not me.

I actually think he'd be okay with it.

- Okay, I gotta go.

See you around Porky.

- I will never live that down, will I?

- I told Jackson not to post it.

- What a jerk.

Preachin' to the choir.

- So that's it?

I'm not gonna see you around?

You'll see me.

The lake
was getting pretty quiet,

as all the cottagers were heading home.

- Hey.

- Hey.

What are you doing here?

- It's the end of the season.

I just wanted to come help Jason.

I didn't know you'd be here.

- Right, yeah.

Been here for a while.

- Jason said you were doing a great job.

- Did you want to come up for a bit?

- Yeah.

In that moment

I remember feeling four things.

I'm sorry.

Please forgive me.

I love you.

Thank you.

We moved back into the
cottage for the winter.

It felt good to be there with
my two most important people.

And while different things mattered to me,

more important things,

I realized that when we put
our pieces back together,

sometimes they fit differently.

And life is such a funny thing, isn't it?

We think we can control it,

but it always seems to lead to us

to where we're meant to be.

If my Dad hadn't sold that paddle boat,

I never would have figured out

what was really important to me.
