So a lot of people see me as the person

who's always goofing around, but when I go

on that stage, I'm really just focused in what I'm doing.

I saw a mix of contemporary in there.

and it's great to see somebody

who can do some of the contemporary,

go up en pointe, and have this amazing technique,

which you do have, but I will say this.

Ballerinas are a little bit more reserved.

Their emotion is a little bit more contained,

and contemporary's, like, the exact opposite.

They're like, blech, all over the place

with their emotions and everything, right?

‐ It's a whole different style. I need to see that.

‐ That very first move when you brought your leg

over like this.

That right there showed me

that technique is not a problem for you at all.

But the problem is you're all technique.

There's so many opportunities for there to be

so much emotional, just, ugh, that I didn't get.

‐ It's weird because you're such a great dancer,

but it felt like a very safe routine.

There was no moment where I felt like, "Oh, wow,"

like, you know, drawn in, and that comes with‐‐

‐ Not safe 'cause you did some athletic things

that were risky. ‐ Oh, not safe.

That's what I'm trying to say. ‐ But safe emotionally.

and I am a contemporary dancer

from Caroga Lake, New York.

‐ I grew up in a small town,

and when I say small, I mean small.

We didn't get cell phone service

till I was about 18, which is almost nine years ago,

and even now, I go home, and I still have one bar.

It's a beautiful town.

I don't wanna take anything away from the town

or the people because a lot of those people raised me.

However, for me, growing up as a male dancer in the area

I grew up in was pretty hard.

Some of the kids that I had to grow up with were not so good.

‐ ♪ You can't tell that you're bigger ♪

♪ Than the sea that you're sinking in ♪

‐ You grow up in a small town.

Everybody knows you're a dancer.

You grow up in a blue‐collar town,

you're not supposed to be dancing.

As a kid I was bullied a lot for being a dancer

on the bus every morning.

‐ ♪ When the lights go out ♪

♪ And leave you standing in the dark ♪

‐ One or two specific kids would choke me out

until I would pass out on the bus.

♪ ♪

And then it went to verbal abuse as I got older.

‐ ♪ I know you think your fire is burning out ♪

‐ And all of a sudden, there were no more friends around me.

♪ ♪

It was hard being attacked for being a dancer,

for doing what you truly love.

So I would just think maybe everybody is right.

Yeah.

‐ ♪ No one ever told you this would be so hard ♪

‐ But dance also saved me.

Dance was the escape from the bullying.

There was a release of emotion 'cause, at that point in time,

I didn't know how to speak for myself,

so dance was a way I could express my words.

who took all that abuse growing up‐‐

in moments, like, you would do something,

So it actually looked awkward in moments,

‐ But there's also some moments where I felt like...

like, I don't know.

I wanted to be, like, more drawn in I guess.

I'm trying to find the words because I'm torn a little bit.

You're amazing. You're strong.

You're flexible. You're emotive.

But you're cutting yourself short

in some of the movements,

and it's one of the things,

and I think that's 'cause you're in your head.

‐ You gotta get out your head a little bit.

‐ You're definitely in your head.

‐ And really dance as much as you

are thinking you're dancing.

‐ I wanna talk about the emotion of the piece.

When she said you're in your head,

like, that resonated with me because I can tell

that this is supposed to be, like,

a super emotive moment‐‐ the smile happens.

I could tell that you felt something,

but in order for it to be successful,

I need to feel it too. ‐ Absolutely.

‐ You need to feel it here, which I think you do.

Your body needs to follow that. ‐ Yeah.

‐ It's like saying an amazing poem

in a language that you made up. ‐ Absolutely, yeah.

‐ Like, it doesn't matter how amazing the poem is

if I can't understand what's being said,

you know what I mean?

‐ Mm‐hmm.

‐ So that I can go, "Oh, my God,

like, I just felt that right there."

‐ Yeah.

‐ That's the only critique that I would give you, so...
