[The Rise of Ning]

[Episode 21]

What's written here?

[Admonishment Drum Hall]

This... This is

Chen Jiuheng's eldest disciple, right?

Yes.

Back then, Chen Jiuheng

embezzled disaster relief funds,

which caused the death of many people.

How dare he claim innocence now?

The news has been widely spread all over the streets now.

People are saying that Chen Jiuheng didn't embezzle the funds at all.

Someone else was responsible for the embezzlement.

He was framed by that real culprit

and died unjustly.

Really?

If he had really died unjustly,

would the imperial court have allowed him

to kneel here for so many days

without anyone intervening?

You know what?

Right now,

the truth of this case

is still unclear.

People like us

are unable to interfere in these matters, too.

There have been

many onlookers these days.

But none of them got close to Chen Daoyan.

He wants to use public sympathy to reopen the old case

and arouse His Majesty's attention.

He's actually quite smart.

Uncle.

The whole city is talking about this matter now.

If we still keep waiting,

I'm afraid it will really arouse His Majesty's attention.

Let's not wait anymore.

Let's take action tonight.

Yes.

What a loser!

I told you to kill Chen Daoyan,

and you dispatched a team of men to do this,

but now he's still alive.

Your Lordship, please don't be angry.

Chen Daoyan was specially protected by someone,

which proved that

his accomplice was right by his side.

Right by his side?

Then did you catch him successfully?

I was incompetent.

Hurry up.

Dispatch more men.

If you still can't catch him,

I'll hold you responsible.

Yes!

Your Lordship, Vice Minister Li is here.

Ask him to come in.

Yes.

Your Lordship.

Vice Minister Li.

Sit down, please.

No need.

I'm here to deliver a message.

I'll leave as soon as I finish delivering it.

The Counsellor said that

this matter had already caused

much discussion all over the city, and everyone knows about it now.

His Majesty heard the news

and summoned

the Director of the Court of Judicial Review and the Prime Minister overnight.

He decided to reopen the case.

What arrangements has Prime Minister Wang made?

His Majesty has decreed that

Counsellor Wang will be in charge of trying the case.

That's good.

Counsellor Wang's opinion is that

since Chen Daoyan dared to

openly claim innocence,

there must be an inside story.

He hopes that Your Lordship will assist in the investigation.

Please ask Prime Minister Wang to rest assured.

I will certainly do my best.

[Admonishment Drum Hall]

Here is His Majesty's decree.

Chen Jiuheng's case

involves many people.

The public pays close attention to it.

The case will be reopened and retried.

Wang Yuan, the Counsellor of the Counselling Department, will be in charge of trying the case.

Guards, take him inside.

-Yes! -Yes!

Chen Daoyan.

I remember you.

You're Chen Jiuheng's eldest disciple.

You've got guts.

As a fugitive,

after hiding all these years,

you still dared to come out and claim innocence.

My master and I

have been framed by villains.

We've been wronged for many years.

Please uphold justice for us.

Nonsense!

In the case of Chen Jiuheng embezzling disaster relief funds,

both the testimonial and physical evidence were irrefutable.

His Majesty personally reviewed the case and made the decision.

How can you claim that it was a wrongful conviction?

The so-called testimonies were false accusations.

The so-called physical evidence was all fabricated.

My master never embezzled any money

from the imperial court.

You...

Chen Daoyan.

You claim that he was innocent.

Do you have any evidence?

Chen Jiuheng's case is closed.

Although the witness is dead,

the testimony has disappeared.

Please investigate its whereabouts

to prevent further trouble.

This was written by Song Yingshan?

But Song Yingshan is already dead.

The content of this letter is unclear,

and its wording is ambiguous.

It can't directly prove that

the conviction of Chen Jiuheng's case was unjust.

With just this letter,

you want to reopen the case?

I also have other evidence.

But I can only submit it to His Majesty face to face.

You...

You want to see His Majesty?

You're a convicted criminal.

The fact that this case is being retried

shows the imperial mercy actually.

Hurry up and present your other evidence now.

Otherwise, not only will you fail to overturn the verdict,

but your punishment will also be even more severe.

When I entered this Admonishment Drum Hall,

I never expected to leave here alive.

If you don't let me see His Majesty today,

in the future,

someone will submit the evidence

to His Majesty.

As there is insufficient evidence,

detain him for the time being.

We'll retry the case another day.

This is a false accusation. What an injustice that has never been seen for ages.

Lu Jiaxue

relied on Song Yingshan back then.

Later, he took over

the Song Family's position

and eradicated the Song Family.

It's already difficult enough

to deal with this one person.

Now Wang Yuan will interfere in it, too.

Well, the chief judge is the mastermind.

How absurd.

Then what should we do now?

Actually, I was also once worried about

whether this case

would be tried by Wang Yuan.

Junior,

have you come up with an idea?

When Wang Yuan tries this case,

he certainly won't overturn the verdict of our master's case.

If at this time, we can find someone who is

highly respected and has real power,

and who has a conflict of interest with Wang Yuan

and is able to contend with him,

and then we ask him to participate in the trial,

there might be hope.

With Wang Yuan's immense power and influence,

who else in the imperial court could do that?

What are tea taxes used for?

They're used for buying horses.

What is the purpose of buying horses?

To fight at wars.

[Jimo Pavilion]

You want to use Duke Ying to deal with Wang Yuan?

This man is upright and loyal.

He's also brave and battlewise.

He has been winning many battles all these years.

His Majesty thinks highly of him.

Moreover, before Lu Jiaxue became the Marquis,

he was often suppressed by his elder brother.

Duke Ying thought it was unfair,

so he once helped him.

Lu Jiaxue became the Marquis after he won a battle.

He gained real power

and didn't care about others.

But he always remembers

how Duke Ying helped

and supported him at that time.

So,

if we use Duke Ying to deal with Wang Yuan,

Lu Jiaxue won't be too unscrupulous.

I think he'll be a bit cautious at least.

Then what are you going to do?

I'm going to cater to his preferences

and lure him to participate in it.

[Duke Ying's Mansion]

[Duke of Ying, Wei Ling]

What an old scoundrel.

How was it?

My Lord.

Are the provisions sufficient?

The provisions are sufficient.

But we're short of medicine.

We reported the news to the imperial court

several days ago,

but still no supplies have arrived.

The procurement of military supplies

has always been managed by Wang Yuanlai.

Without his approval,

there surely won't be any supplies.

I've already reported

this matter to His Majesty

many times.

However, this old scoundrel was too cunning.

He could always find excuses to delay.

The situation of battles at the border is getting worse.

There are many wounded soldiers in our army.

If we still can't get some medicine,

with the rampant cold,

I'm afraid the wounded soldiers won't be able to survive for a few days.

I'll go talk to him now.

My Lord.

Someone outside the mansion has delivered ten carts of medicine here.

He also wants you

to check this personally.

Medicine?

Who sent it here?

The person who delivered it was also hired to do this,

so he doesn't know who gave it to us.

You may leave now.

Yes.

My Lord, be careful.

It might be a trap.

This person caters to my needs.

He surely wants to ask for my help.

How could it be a trap?

[Accounts of Tea]

This is

a report on tea production and tax revenues.

And it was finished ten years ago.

Why did he give this to me?

Chen Jiuheng reported that

tea taxes had been declining year after year.

He requested a thorough investigation.

Chen Jiuheng?

Back then, he was the Vice Minister of the Ministry of Revenue,

and all his clan members were killed because he embezzled disaster relief funds.

Why did this person send

these things here?

Tea production increased largely,

but tea taxes had been declining year after year.

He wants to tell us that

someone has been embezzling the money.

That's outrageous!

Is someone trying to embezzle the tea taxes?

These tea taxes

are the main sources of our military supplies.

Someone dares to embezzle these taxes?

We risk our lives on the battlefield,

while these corrupt officials

only care about their own desires.

They truly deserve to die.

Chen Jiuheng's case

caused quite a stir back then.

It involved many people.

However,

Chen Jiuheng wanted to investigate corruption,

but he was imprisoned

for embezzling disaster relief funds.

It looks like

there's more to this story.

A few days ago, Chen Jiuheng's

eldest disciple

suddenly appeared to say that he was innocent.

Are these things

related to this case?

If it is really a wrongful conviction

and involves military supplies,

I certainly can't stand by without doing anything.

Come on. Let's go check on the medicine first.

Yes.

This must be Duke Ying.

He looks quite fierce.

A military leader surely has a dignified appearance.

Moreover, Duke Ying

personally led his troops to fight on the battlefield

and has gained great respect from his soldiers.

He accepted the medicine.

It looks like the tea taxes report

which we gave to him

is effective.

Now we'll see

whether he'll intervene

in Senior Daoyan's case.

If this man is really upright and incorruptible

as is said in the rumor,

then he will participate in this case.

Moreover, because of military supplies,

he has been holding a grudge against Wang Yuan for a long time.

This is a good opportunity

to intimidate them.

Thank you, Young Master.

Thank you, Miss.

Wait a moment.

Please get up.

Take your child to see the doctor now.

Don't delay anymore.

Just go at once.

Your Lordship.

Seventh Miss and Luo Shenyuan are over there.

Seventh Miss.

I didn't expect to meet you here,

Your Lordship.

You got the first place in the Provincial Examination at one stroke.

How remarkable.

Thank you for your compliments.

I hope that this is just the beginning.

I interrogated a criminal at the Admonishment Drum Hall

all night last night.

I was just about to go home.

I didn't expect to

meet you two here.

Your Lordship, thanks for your hard work.

This person was very stubborn.

I used all the 18 types of torture instruments,

but he still refused to tell me where his accomplice was.

I don't quite understand

how to investigate a case.

I can't share Your Lordship's burden.

It doesn't matter.

As long as someone has fallen into my hands,

no matter how stubborn he is,

I'll still find a way to make him tell the truth.

Seventh Miss.

May I have a word with you?

We still have urgent matters to deal with at home,

so we have to go home now.

May I have a word with you?

Seventh Miss.

Marquis Lu, what would you like to ask me?

Please go ahead.

According to your advice,

I've found that unmarked grave.

There is indeed a female corpse inside.

Marquis Lu, you dug a grave?

Meimei is truly pitiful.

She can't even rest in peace after death.

Since that's the case,

what else do you want to ask?

Although it is a female corpse,

my intuition tells me that

she's not Meimei.

If that's what you think,

there's nothing I can do about it.

I just feel that Meimei is still alive.

You're just too obsessed with this idea.

It's getting late.

The elders at home

must be anxiously waiting for us.

Let's go back first.

Is everything alright?

Let's go back now.

Why is it so cold?

Is something bothering you?

Third Brother,

I know what you want to ask.

Just now, Lu Jiaxue

only asked me some questions

about paper cutting.

He also likes paper cutting.

If you don't want to tell me,

there's no need to explain it to me.

But if he badgers you again,

you have to tell me.

I know.

Just now, he deliberately mentioned

Senior Daoyan's matter, didn't he?

He told you about it deliberately.

Senior Daoyan is the appellant,

and His Majesty was the one who decreed a retrial.

They won't be too unscrupulous.

Let's hope that Duke Ying

will do as we wish.

[Liufang]

My Lady.

Was Lu Jiaxue

the friend whom you often looked after

when you were at the villa

and the one who was blind?

Yes.

Then did you fall into the water later

also because of him?

Qingqu.

Don't disclose

this matter to anyone

to avoid unnecessary trouble.

He and I

have nothing to do with each other anymore.

But now he keeps badgering you like this.

Does it mean that he has recognized you?

He probably isn't quite sure yet.

I lied to him that

the grave outside the villa

was mine.

You mean Meimei's grave?

Meimei died of illness back then.

She served me well,

and she died because of me.

She can't rest in peace

even after her death.

Sixth Sister.

I'm here to see Richie.

Sixth Sister.

How come you've lost weight?

I don't think so.

My Lady is so worried about something every day that

she can't eat anything.

Of course she has lost weight.

Don't listen to her nonsense.

Sixth Sister.

Do you have a crush on someone?

This is called

"wasting away for love".

I've heard that Aunt Chen has always

taken you to see the princess lately.

Alright.

How come you're also teasing me?

Alright, Sixth Sister.

Stop sighing.

Even Richie will start sighing with you.

Right, Richie?

Have you seen Sixth Uncle recently?

It seems that after the rankings were posted last time,

I haven't seen him much.

Mother said that

he seemed to be in a bad mood.

I think he's been staying in his dwelling.

Mother.

Have you seen Lin Mao?

He didn't do well in the exam this time.

I scolded him a bit.

I thought he was reflecting on himself in his room,

but unexpectedly, he left a letter

and ran away from home.

I'll go look for it.

The trade market has been closed.

Where are you going to find it?

Don't worry.

I admit my mistakes

with the right attitude and actions.

Just wait for me.

Did he really go look for it?

What?

What?

Is it possible that he has gone back to Lin'an?

He didn't do well in the exam this time.

He also kept nagging that

he wouldn't take the imperial exam again.

I was so angry that I asked him

to go back to Lin'an himself

and tell our parents about it.

But he firmly refused to go back.

Then have you sent someone to look for him?

Why should I look for him?

I don't want to go look for him.

I'm so angry.

Did...

he really go out to look for it?

Sixth Sister.

Do you know where Sixth Uncle is?

That day, I told him that

I would run out of my high-quality basil soon.

He said he would help me find some.

Well, I...

I also don't know where he is.

He couldn't have gone to the north, could he?

But the north is at war now.

The trade market at the border has been banned.

I'm afraid it won't be easy to find him.

What if he's

in danger?

That won't happen.

Although

he usually seems quite foolish,

I think

he's still

quite smart and intelligent.

He's not smart at all.

I was just saying that casually,

but he actually went look for it.

Alright, Sixth Sister.

I think Mother is just being stubborn.

She'll definitely send someone to look for him.

Madam, just don't be so sad.

I don't think Eldest Young Master

would want to see you

suffering like this.

If my eldest son were still alive,

he would probably get married and have children soon.

Yes.

Back then,

if it weren't for the misdiagnosis

of the quack recommended by Madam Gu...

Let's go back.

Be careful.

Eldest Master.

Alright.

I'll sit here for a while.

You may leave now.

You may leave now.

Yes.

Eldest Master?

Eldest Master!

Eldest Master, are you alright?

Are you feeling unwell?

Minglan.

Is it you?

Is it you, Minglan?

Are you... Are you drunk?

Is it you?

I'm drunk indeed.

Because only when I'm drunk

can I dream of you.

Is it you, Minglan?

It's really you.

Minglan! Minglan! Minglan!

It is you.

Minglan, don't go.

Minglan! Minglan!

Minglan.

Eldest Master.

Minglan.

Eldest Master, you're drunk.

Minglan.

It's me.

Minglan, don't go.

Minglan!

Minglan!

Guards! Help Eldest Master back inside now.

[Zhijie House]

-Yes. -Yes.

Miss Yang.

It's so late now.

Why haven't you gone to sleep yet?

I was just about to return to my room.

Madam Chen, Eldest Master...

It's late now.

Just go to sleep at once.

Madam,

why didn't you let me

teach that little slut a lesson?

When she first came here,

I could sense that she had ulterior motives.

Today, she finally

showed her true ambitions.

She's a guest in our mansion.

How would you teach her a lesson?

But I heard that

Eldest Master spent a lot of money

redeeming all the things

she had pawned.

Does Eldest Master

have a feeling for her

because she looks like Madam Gu?

She'll have to go out of our mansion at some point, won't she?

Madam, you're right.

It's my eldest son's

death anniversary today.

But he doesn't remember that.

Instead, he never forgets

that woman.

[Glorious Flowers in Spring and Solid Fruits in Autumn]

It's been several days.

Why hasn't he come back yet?

Doesn't he know that

his family members are all worried about him?

Madam,

please don't make yourself sick with worry.

Perhaps it's just as Sixth Master said.

He had been

studying too hard previously,

so he went out to relax.

He studied too hard?

I wasn't idle, either.

How am I

going to explain this to Lin'an?

By the way,

have you got any news from

those who we've dispatched?

Not yet.

Not yet?

Madam, are you alright?

Help me back to my room.

Come on!

Come here now!

Hurry up!

My Lady,

I've got some news.

How is it?

The Caifu Garden

is in complete chaos now.

I seemed to hear that

Sixth Master isn't back yet.

Madam Lin is so worried that she's sick now.

If he really left because of

that joke I made,

then I've committed a grave sin.

Sixth Miss,

it's time for us to go back now.

If we take a walk for too long,

and Madam Chen asks about it later,

it'll be bad.

Alright. Let's go.

Let's go.

Eldest Master.

I had a get-together with my colleagues last night

and couldn't help drinking a lot of wine.

Then I offended you.

As I'm sober today,

I feel deeply ashamed.

I've already forgotten

what happened last night.

I've been disturbing the Luo Family for too long.

Today,

I'm here specially to say goodbye to everyone.

Saying goodbye?

You haven't found

your elder brother yet, have you?

Do you want to leave because of

what happened last night?

Eldest Master,

I came across Madam Chen

in the garden last night.

Did she see anything?

Madam Chen

treated me the same way as she usually does.

It's just that I feel uneasy myself.

Moreover,

I can't

keep staying in the Luo's Mansion

just because I can't find my brother.

Alright. I understand.

I'll ask someone to prepare some money for your journey.

As for all those things

which you've pawned one after another,

like the gold hairpins, jade bracelets

and other items,

I've redeemed them all for you.

There's no need for that.

Miss Yang,

please don't refuse.

I'm very grateful

for your initial rescue

and all your help in the mansion.

I'll

remember your kindness forever.

Mother.

I really don't want to drink it anymore.

Please just take one more sip.

My disease

can't be cured just by taking medicine, can it?

Third Brother.

Greetings, Mother.

I've heard that you're sick,

so I'm here specially to visit you.

I was going to hold a banquet for you these few days as you got

the first place at the Provincial Examination.

But unexpectedly, I fell sick suddenly.

It will have to be delayed for a few more days.

Mother,

your health is the most important thing.

When you recover,

it won't be too late to hold the banquet.

Third Brother, you came at the right time.

Mother refused to take this medicine.

Mother, you refused to take the medicine?

I'm fine.

Just focus on your studies.

I have Ruixiang here to take care of me.

You still need to take the medicine.

If you're not well,

I won't be able to

focus on my studies.

Let me feed you.

Please drink a little, Mother.

The situation outside is chaotic right now.

Sixth Uncle just

went out recklessly like this.

It's indeed worrying.

I'll also ask some people to help look for him together.

Is there any news about Duke Ying?

His Majesty has issued a decree.

Duke Ying is permitted to participate in the joint trial.

That's great.

As long as Duke Ying is there,

Wang Yuan won't be able to

manipulate the trial with his own power.

If we could make Wang Yuan

completely unable to interfere in this case

and get suspected by His Majesty,

that would be even better.

What do you plan to do?

[Duke Ying's Mansion]

Who are you?

How dare you block Duke Ying's way?

What is this?

My Lord, you will know as soon as you take a look.

I won't look at it.

Just tell me.

This is the testimony from the Court of Judicial Review

for Chen Jiuheng's case at that time.

The masterminds were Wang Yuan

and Song Yingshan.

They not only smuggled things

but also framed loyal officials,

bringing disasters for the country and the people.

I remember that

there was a big fire at the Court of Judicial Review back then.

The key witness was burned to death.

All the related documents were destroyed in the fire, too.

Where did you get this testimony?

I got this

painstakingly.

Even if this testimony is genuine,

it's useless.

The witness is dead and can't testify.

Indeed, that's true.

But you're a pillar of our country

and a close minister to His Majesty.

If you can personally submit this evidence

to His Majesty,

even if His Majesty doesn't fully believe in it,

he will also become suspicious of Wang Yuan.

This is your real purpose, isn't it?

You knew that I was short of military supplies,

so you used tea taxes to lure me into the trap.

Now,

you're showing this to me.

Your plan is quite clever.

Do you want me to take the lead for you?

Tell me.

Who on earth are you?

I'm Chen Jiuheng's disciple.

As I believe in your moral character,

I've dared to risk my life to block your way

and hand this evidence over to you.

I hope that you can uphold justice for us.

Miss Yang.

Seventh Miss.

I've heard that you'll leave soon.

You and Old Madam have been so kind.

You've let me

stay here for so long.

I've been eating and drinking for free.

I feel guilty about it.

But now

you still haven't found your brother yet.

After you leave here,

where are you going to stay?

Besides continuing to look for my brother,

I'll just take it one step at a time.

Would you like to go to Minglan Hall?

There are many orphans there.

If you're willing to go,

you can stay there.

I would be glad to.

Seventh Miss, you're really so kind-hearted.

You're welcome.

If you're willing to go there,

I can take you

to visit Minglan Hall tomorrow.

My Lady,

does the word "Minglan"

have any special origin?

It's my mother's name.

I apologize for my impertinence.

It's just that after I entered the mansion,

I've heard some rumors.

Is it because everyone says that

you and my mother

look qutie similar?

I just hope that

my question

hasn't offended you.

Not at all.

And it's indeed true.

Sister, look.

There is a lot of delicious food.

I want this one.

Miss Yang.

Thanks for your hard work today.

If you had not been here,

Qingqu and I wouldn't have been able to carry

so many things here.

Seventh Miss,

you have such a kind heart.

I'm willing to help you.

If there's another opportunity like this in the future,

please don't hesitate to ask for my help.

Actually, I'm just

making a tiny contribution.

Many of these things

were prepared by my Third Brother.

Yes.

Both you and Third Young Master

are kind-hearted people.

Your sibling bond is also so strong.

I quite admire you.

Please have mercy.

Please have mercy. Give me some food.

You're Miss Yang, aren't you?

Your brother has been looking for you at the refugee shelter

in the northwest.

Really?

I don't know if he's still there now.

Just go take a look now.

Okay.

The food is right inside there.

Thank you.

Seventh Miss,

I want to go to the refugee shelter now

to look for my brother.

How can you go alone?

I'll go with you. Let's go.

Okay.

What's wrong, Miss Yang?

Qingqu!

Have you twisted your ankle?

Miss Yang, let me take a look.

How can you go like this?

How about this, Qingqu?

Help Miss Yang inside to rest for a while.

Yes. Miss.

I don't think this is okay.

If I go there late,

and my brother leaves there, what should I do then?

But your foot...

How about this? I'll go for you.

When I find him,

I'll bring him here.

Thank you so much, Seventh Miss.

My brother's name is Yang Zhijie.

This is the bracelet I've been wearing.

If you find him,

he'll understand everything when he sees this bracelet.

Okay.

Well, Qingqu, take good care of Miss Yang.

Yes.

Come on.

Is this the carriage?

Yes, this is the one.

Why are you...

What's going on outside?

Who are you?

Give me the ball.

Over here.

I want it, too.

You can't get it.

Give it to me! Over here!

Why are you standing here?

Third Young Master, why are you here?

Xuezhi has told me that

Yining is here today,

so I'm here to see her.

Seven Miss went to the refugee shelter

in the northwest on behalf of Miss Yang

to look for her brother.

She's been away for most of the day

and hasn't come back yet.

I'm a bit worried.

The refugee shelter?

How about this?

Tell Shao'an to bring some people here to find me.

I'll go look for her first.

Yes.

[Jimo Pavilion]

Shao'an! Shao'an!

Qingqu, why are you so flustered?

Something wrong happened to Seventh Miss.

Third Young Master wants you to dispatch some people

to the refugee shelter in the northwest at once.

Okay. I got it.

Yining, is that you?
