[The Rise of Ning]

[Episode 20]

Xuanyuan,

how dare you!

Father, it's wasn't me!

Father,

Xuan studies and writes articles

every day.

He didn't prepare

any of these things himself.

Then who did it?

Hairu,

did you prepare all of these?

Yes.

I bought all the exam supplies

from Wanglou Pavilion.

But these candles

are not from Wanglou Pavilion.

I prepared three sets in total.

Besides theirs,

there's also one for Mao.

The writing sets, food, and supplies

are exactly the same.

I showed no bias at all.

But someone thought my preparation

wasn't good enough

and didn't want to use it,

so he insisted on preparing his own.

You disgraceful brat!

The reputation of the Luo family

was nearly ruined

by you.

Father,

Xuan was unaware of it.

He didn't do it.

He wouldn't do that?

Recently,

you've been absent-minded

and regressed significantly in your studies.

When I tested you,

you failed to answer several times.

In the end,

you resorted to writing cheat notes on your palm

to deceive me.

I've warned you, Luo Xuanyuan,

but you refused to change.

I think

you shouldn't take the exam today.

Guards.

Drag him to the Meditation Hall

and punish him with the punishing rod!

-Father! -Father!

I did this!

Fifth Sister,

why did you do this?

It was all my fault.

I thought I was acting

in Xuan's best interest.

Xuan knew nothing about it.

Father, if you must punish someone,

punish me.

I'll accept any punishment;

just don't let this

prevent Xuan from taking the exam.

Where are the supplies

your mother prepared for you?

In...

In the room.

Take them

and go to the exam.

If you fail,

don't bother coming back.

And you,

go and kneel in the Meditation Hall.

If Xuan fails,

you are not to get up.

Yixiu.

I... I'm heading off.

What if

I don't pass the exam?

Isn't that already expected?

Right.

Oh, right.

Why did you suddenly

visit the princess recently?

Oh, that reminds me.

Do you remember

Han Zhao?

It turns out he's the princess's son.

He's the princess's son?

Why am I even telling you this?

Yixiu.

The reason I said that

to my sister before

was because someone looked down on us

for being merchants,

and I spoke without thinking

in a moment of panic.

I didn't mean to target you.

I really know I was wrong.

Where is Lin Mao?

Where did he go?

I'll come and find you after the exam.

Please don't be angry anymore.

I'm leaving now.

Forget it.

Even the God of Culture and Literature can't save him.

It's all set.

Okay.

Don't worry, Mother.

Okay, then.

Make sure you stay focused during the exam.

Do your best.

You have a soft heart.

After all, Xuan was unaware of this.

He has been studying hard all this time, and the exam only comes once every three years.

I don't want to ruin him.

Although Luo Yilian holds bad intentions,

she is not very bright.

Her little tricks

can't fool you.

If she doesn't provoke me,

I won't cause trouble.

But if she tries to drag you down,

I won't let her get away with it.

[Examination Hall]

I'm going in.

Okay.

Do your best.

Okay, okay.

Oh, Third Brother.

I just remembered something.

I almost forgot.

-What is it? -Come over.

Here, Third Brother, break off a branch.

Perfect.

You'll definitely pass this time.

Thank you.

Keep it for me.

I'm going in.

Luo Yining,

you were the one who tried to frame Xuan,

right?

It was you who tried to frame Third Brother.

You were afraid that he would perform better than Xuan in the exam,

leaving you guys with no status in the Luo family.

Nonsense.

I didn't do it!

Our Xuan is the best.

Don't think

I can't tell

when you mess with

Third Brother's supplies.

When I was at the villa,

I heard plenty of

such stories.

I only tampered with the things

Lin Hairu gave to Third Brother.

I didn't prepare any candles

with hidden notes for Xuan.

You were the one who put it in Xuan's basket

to frame him.

So you admit it?

I was just giving you a taste

of your own medicine.

You...

You also colluded with Lin Hairu

and deliberately suggested Father check,

didn't you?

You always think

others are trying to frame you.

Those who harm others will eventually harm themselves.

Think about it.

[Examination Hall]

Freedom at last!

Sixth Uncle.

Third Nephew.

Aren't you tired after three days of exams?

Tired? Not at all.

I feel like

I've been reborn.

Today, how about we drink to our heart's content?

Sixth Uncle, you did well in the exam?

What's it to you?

If I didn't do well, so be it.

I didn't cheat.

Uncle,

the carriage is over there. Let's go.

Let's go.

[List of Passers]

Madam, look.

I'm Liu Jing.

Greetings, Madam Chen.

Eldest Miss.

Mother,

I'm not really going to

marry into the Liu family, am I?

Your grandmother

just mentioned it casually.

It doesn't mean anything.

Let's see the exam results first.

I told you to hurry up.

There are so many people.

We can't squeeze in.

Yes. It was all my fault.

Later, I'll let you

stand on my shoulders to see.

Sure.

The results are out!

Everyone, step back.

Step back a bit.

Xuan passed!

Look! 34th place!

That's great!

Our Miss doesn't have to

keep kneeling in the Meditation Hall anymore.

Xuan didn't let down

all those years of hard work at least.

Unlike my brother Lin Mao,

who probably already knew that he wouldn't make it,

so he didn't even dare to come see the results.

Eldest Miss.

I made it.

I saw it.

Mother said that once I pass the imperial exam,

we'll go to the Luo family to propose.

I will go home right now to report to my parents.

We will surely prepare all the necessary formalities

and won't treat you lightly.

Please wait for my good news.

[First Place: Luo Shenyuan]

Third Brother!

You got the first place in the exam!

That's great, Third Brother!

Alright, alright.

Keep your voice down.

I knew you would make it.

Lower your voice.

-Shenyuan. -Congratulations, Third Young Master.

Congratulations on getting first place.

Thank you, Mother. Thank you, Sister.

So you are the one who topped the exam?

A true talent!

Thank you, thank you.

Sir,

my daughter is still unmarried.

Sir,

why don't you come back to my mansion with me?

Sir! Sir!

[Be Humble and Open-minded]

They passed!

They passed!

Great news! Great news! They passed!

They passed! They passed!

Who passed?

Eighth Young Master ranked 34th!

Great!

Mother,

congratulations!

Congratulations, Mother.

Congratulations, Second Brother.

What about the other young masters?

Old Madam,

there's also Third Young Master.

He passed as well?

Third Young Master ranked top in the exam.

Top?

You... take your time.

Say it slowly, word by word.

Speak loudly!

Congratulations, Old Madam.

Third Young Master Luo Shenyuan came in first—

the top scholar!

Congratulations, Old Madam.

Congratulations, Second Master.

Congratulations, Mother.

Alright, stop laughing.

You've been laughing all the way; isn't your face tired?

I've only heard about the practice of

snatching men from the list to take them as grooms before.

Seeing it in person today

is really eye-opening.

Luckily, I ran away.

Otherwise, I wouldn't know

which family I'd have been taken to.

Then I wish you

would soon become the provincial top scholar

and then the Number One Scholar.

Then there will be more people

snatching you.

However,

I think there will soon be people

coming to our mansion to propose marriage to you.

At that time,

I will have a sister-in-law.

Why are you

always thinking about

these useless things?

How can this be useless?

Are you planning

to go your whole life without getting married?

If I can't

marry the person I like,

then I won't marry anyone for the rest of my life.

Alright.

Then I hope you

meet your true love soon.

That way,

I'll have a sister-in-law soon.

Your Lordship, there's only this one unnamed grave

left around the Peach Blossom Villa.

Start digging.

Do it.

Your Lordship,

judging by the body shape, this is indeed a female corpse.

What about the information I asked you to gather?

When Seventh Miss was living in the villa,

there was indeed

a personal maid of hers who died.

Her name was Xu Mei?

Indeed.

Her name was Meimei.

Bury her.

Inform everyone

that all the estates will have three days off.

Yes, Madam.

Congratulations to Third Young Master for coming in first.

Thank you.

Ruixiang, scatter the coins.

Yes.

Everyone,

come and share in the joy of our Luo family!

Thank you, Madam Lin!

thank you, Madam Lin.

Thank you. Thank you.

Thank you, Madam Lin.

Congratulations.

Thank you, Madam Lin.

It's mine!

Give me one.

It's mine.

Congratulations.

Thank you, Madam Lin.

Thank you. Thank you.

Greetings, Grandmother.

Please rise.

-Yes. -Yes.

Both Shenyuan and Xuanyuan have passed the exam.

This is a great occasion

for our Luo family.

Today,

we have prepared a feast in the mansion.

Let's sit together and celebrate.

No one should be missing.

-Thank you, Grandmother. -Thank you, Grandmother.

No need to thank me.

It was your father

who had the feast prepared.

Thank you, Father.

Mother, you've returned from scattering coins?

Congratulations, Mother.

Look at you, beaming with joy.

How much money did you give away?

Not much.

Shenyuan made us so proud.

I'm just happy.

Now that you are the mother of the top scholar,

you should be happy.

Chengzhang, during your free time,

take Hairu to the temple to give thanks

for a dream come true.

Yes, Mother.

Mother, I'm sorry for the waste of money.

How can it be a waste of money?

I'm proud of you.

Mother, you should save your money.

There will be

the metropolitan examination and the palace examination.

Don't worry.

As long as Shenyuan does well,

I will scatter as much coins as I want.

Chengwen,

don't be too disappointed.

Failing once doesn't mean much.

There will be many opportunities in the future.

-Yes, Mother. -Yes, Mother.

Although you ranked first in the exam,

the path of the imperial examination has just begun.

Don't be arrogant or complacent.

The spring examination and palace examination

are the exams where your true abilities will be tested.

Yes.

Xuanyuan,

you must not slack off either.

You still have a chance to pass the metropolitan examination.

Yes, Father.

I have already pleaded with Father.

He has allowed you to stop kneeling,

but you'll be confined in the Lotus Pavilion

and not allowed to go out.

I've heard about it.

You passed the exam.

Father must be very happy.

From now on, no one in this mansion

will dare to look down on us.

Xuan, what's wrong?

Now that you've passed, why are you still unhappy?

What is there to be happy about?

I just passed the exam.

It's nothing compared to the glory of coming in first.

Miss, are you alright?

Did Shan come in first?

Miss, it's that one from Jimo Pavilion

who came in first.

Mother.

Kneel!

I just didn't pass this time.

I can take the exam again next time.

Besides, failing multiple times

is very common.

Why don't you compare yourself to those who did well?

I've always told you to study hard,

but you never listened.

Now look what's happened.

The two people from the second household

both passed the exam,

and you're the only one who failed.

Lin Mao didn't pass either.

You're comparing yourself to him?

What's his background?

The Luo and Chen families

are both well-respected scholarly families.

Your grandfather was a Number One Scholar.

Your father passed the palace examination.

Your elder brother

was incredibly intelligent since childhood.

Grandfather is grandfather,

and father is father.

And I am myself.

No matter how clever my brother was,

he's already dead.

You good-for-nothing!

You always learn useless things,

only thinking about playing with weapons.

Stop reading this "Ten Military Tactics."

[The Art of War]

I'm telling you,

starting tomorrow,

all these useless things of yours

will be thrown out!

Go to the Meditation Hall

and kneel there all night as punishment!

Don't be angry, Madam.

Shan will definitely pass next time.

Next time?

If he fails again,

I will

completely lose face.

If my eldest son were still alive,

how could

anyone else be first?

And I wouldn't

be so humiliated.

That Luo Shenyuan

has made such an unexpected achievement.

Now even Old Madam

looks at him differently.

Before he even got the legal status,

he had already been very protective of Luo Yining.

In the future, if he manages

to become the Number Two Scholar or the Number Three Scholar,

then...

The road ahead is still long.

Who knows what will happen in the future?

I have a terrible headache.

I won't attend

the feast tonight.

Go and tell Old Madam.

Yes.

Where is he?

where is he?

Aren't you very close with Shenyuan?

Why didn't you

attend his feast today?

Sister, please don't mock me.

Just thinking about how I didn't do well in the exam

makes me so upset that I can't even eat.

Why are you crying?

Why are you crying?

Only a very few people

can pass the exam on their first try.

You should put in more effort next time.

I'll go explain it to our parents.

What upsets me the most is that

I made it hard for you

to explain to our parents.

I'm so useless.

Don't be discouraged.

In the future, put more energy

into your studies.

Eat up.

I have no appetite.

Ruixiang,

go get some porridge and side dishes.

Sister, just punish me

and starve me.

How can I do that?

You'll get sick from hunger.

Just wait.

I've let you down, Sister.

I've let you down!

Sister?

Why are you back?

Yes, I'm back.

Joy turned to sorrow, huh?

I was wondering why you've changed.

I was wrong.

I'll beat you to death!

Old Madam, Third Young Master is here.

It's so late already.

What brings you here?

I specifically came to ask you

to give me that testimony from back then.

You did indeed come in first today in the exam.

But in the future,

there will be the metropolitan examination and the palace examination.

How do you know

what your future will hold?

I am confident

that I won't disappoint you.

Very well. Sit down.

Yes.

Let's sit down and talk.

Shenyuan,

what would you do

if I gave you that testimony?

Grandmother,

I understand your concerns.

But I'm not

a reckless person.

Now that I'm in the pedigree,

I will take the honor and disgrace

of the Luo family as my own responsibility

and will never let the Luo family

fall into danger.

I will also protect Yining well.

What if

I still refuse to give you

that testimony?

If you really didn't want to

give me that testimony,

we wouldn't be

having this conversation today.

I know that during this time,

you have been observing me.

You must already

have made your decision in your heart.

Are you really not afraid of danger

or death?

Grandfather risked himself

to clear the wrongful case.

His spirit must be inherited by someone.

Since you have kept the testimony until today,

you must be waiting for

this person to appear.

Grandmother,

please trust me.

I will fulfill

Grandfather's wish

while ensuring the safety of the Luo family.

Wenzhai,

he is your grandson.

He cannot escape from your blessings

nor your misfortunes.

Shenyuan,

remember what you said today.

Otherwise, after my passing,

I will have no face to meet your grandfather.

Grandmother, don't worry.

I

will keep it in mind.

What do you mean by this, Mr. Song?

You know what this is about.

I do not accept unearned rewards,

nor do I take ill-gotten gains.

The soldiers at the border are fighting bravely in battle,

yet you are pocketing profits from the tea tax.

The military funds are insufficient, which concerns the country.

As the Vice Minister of Revenue,

how can I stand by and watch?

Don't be ungrateful.

I only seek to be at peace with my conscience.

[Testimony by Sun Chengwu]

Li Yinglong's accusation against Chen Jiuheng

for embezzling disaster relief funds

is a false accusation.

Wang Yuan and Song Yingshan's faction

has been smuggling tea for personal gain.

Vice Minister of Revenue Chen Jiuheng

has reported the case to the Court of Judicial Review.

However, Wang Yuan's faction has secretly applied pressure,

coercing Vice Minister Chen to destroy the evidence.

Vice Minister Chen refused.

So, Wang Yuan instructed his henchman,

Li Yinglong,

to frame Vice Minister Chen for embezzling disaster relief funds,

leading to Vice Minister Chen and his students

being wrongfully imprisoned.

This is a false accusation

and a great injustice for the ages.

Testified by Sun Chengwu.

So it was Wang Yuan?

No wonder Old Madam

has kept this testimony so well hidden.

Young Master,

the road ahead

will be very difficult.

Although it'll be difficult,

I will see it through to the end.

[Luo's Mansion]

Miss, you've been taking a walk for a long time.

How about we head back?

Let's walk a bit more.

He hasn't come out for several days.

He wouldn't be sick, would he?

Who's sick?

Yixiu, Yixiu!

Yixiu!

It's been so long,

and you're still angry?

I'm fat and ugly.

How dare I be angry with you?

That's not what I meant.

You're not ugly at all.

You're just a little fat.

I mean,

even though you're a little fat,

I don't think you're

any less beautiful.

I think you're plump

in a cute way,

even cuter than those

delicate clay dolls.

Who compliments like you do?

Comparing me to a clay doll?

Yixiu, please forgive me.

As long as you forgive me,

I'll do anything you ask me to.

Really? Anything?

Just tell me,

and I'll do it.

Recently,

who knows

when this war will end?

Forget about high-quality basil;

I can't even find

the low-quality ones.

I'll go look for it.

Well...

The frontier markets have all shut down.

Where are you going to find it?

Don't worry.

I admit my mistakes

with the right attitude and actions.

Just wait for me.

Don't run so fast!

Young Master,

Qi'an said that Senior Daoyan is missing.

Let's go to the Admonishment Drum Hall.

[Admonishment Drum]

Senior, you can't go.

Yuan,

I knew you would come.

I've made up my mind.

There's no need to persuade me further.

I got the testimony yesterday.

The mastermind is Wang Yuan.

His influence in the court

is deeply rooted.

Just hitting the Admonishment Drum

won't overturn the case.

Okay. Good.

We finally know who he is.

Senior, come back with me.

Once I become an official,

I will plan carefully and thoroughly to overturn the case.

How long will it take?

One year?

Five years?

Ten years?

It won't take that long, Senior.

Don't you trust me?

Of course I trust you.

But I can't wait that long.

My days are numbered.

I have only two or three months to live.

What do you mean?

Over the past two years,

my cough has worsened.

I didn't want to worry you,

so I didn't mention it.

Since this is my fate,

I hope to fulfill my long-standing wish

before I die

and draw attention back

to Teacher's case.

And that'll be enough for me.

No, Senior.

I can't just watch you

die for nothing.

Just let me go, Yuan.

Otherwise, I won't be able to rest in peace.

I only ask you to do one thing:

after I hit the Admonishment Drum,

make sure

to spread it as widely as possible.

Did you hear me?

Yes.

It hasn't been easy for you

to come this far.

Now that you've passed the exam,

I am truly happy for you.

If Master were still alive,

he would definitely be very proud of you.

From now on,

you'll have to walk on your own.

You must be careful.

[Admonishment Drum Hall]

[An injustice is waiting for its vindication]

Your Lordship, should we capture him?

Young Master,

right now, Brother Daoyan

is like a living target.

Lu Jiaxue

definitely won't let him go.

Should I just bring Brother Daoyan

back?

You can't take him away.

Since Senior Daoyan has made his decision,

he won't give up.

Order the Imperial City Guard

to place personnel nearby.

No matter who comes to take him away,

follow that person

and capture him.

Yes.

Lu Jiaxue won't

take action against him for now.

Why?

For Lu Jiaxue,

Senior Daoyan is bait.

Bait to catch us.

Anyway,

we still need to send brothers

to protect him secretly,

just in case.

Understood.

Your Lordship, do you mean

to keep Chen Daoyan outside as bait

and wait for his accomplices to appear

so we can catch them all at once?

Vice Minister Li,

we have been looking for him for so many years.

Now that he has come to us,

we cannot waste this opportunity.

Your Lordship, you have thought this through.

I truly admire you.

However, the Minister has instructed

that this matter cannot be delayed

and must not be made public.

It should be resolved as soon as possible.

Otherwise, if His Majesty finds out,

it will be troublesome.

Three days at most.

After three days,

if no accomplices show up,

I will handle it myself.

I take my leave, Your Lordship.

What?

Brother Daoyan went to hit the Admonishment Drum?

He has been hitting it for a day,

saying he wants to seek justice

for Lord Chen Jiuheng's case from years ago.

Hurry and have someone to prepare a carriage. Let's go out.

Are we going to Jimo Pavilion

to find the Third Young Master?

At this time,

how could Third Brother

possibly stay at Jimo Pavilion?

Yes.

Young Master,

there are people from the Imperial City Guard

following us.

Let's go.

Move!

Get in.

Third Brother,

Why is Brother Daoyan

hitting the Admonishment Drum?

He wants to overturn the case.

Even if he fails,

he can still attract His Majesty's attention.

I have inquired about

Mr. Chen's matter before.

It is said that his case

was judged by Grandfather.

Yes.

The evidence they used to frame my teacher

was flawless.

The case already had a conclusion.

However, Old Master

believed in my teacher's character.

He reviewed the case repeatedly

and finally got Sun Chengwu

to reveal the truth

and write a genuine testimony.

But on the night after the interrogation,

the Court of Judicial Review caught fire,

and Sun Chengwu died.

So how did you

find out about all this?

After

returning to the mansion,

Old Master only met with Old Madam.

I was lurking outside the window

and learned about this testimony.

Before he passed away, Old Master

asked Old Madam to take good care of a painting.

That's how I knew

the testimony

was hidden in a painting.

So,

when I just returned to the mansion,

you kept asking me

about Grandfather's Pine and Cypress Painting

and even sneaked into my chamber

just for that testimony?

So, all the times you helped me and saved me

were also for that testimony?

I did have that intention,

but I truly wanted

to help you as well.

You're just a liar.

You've been deceiving

all of us.

But I didn't want to deceive you.

Alright, alright.

Once Brother Daoyan's matter is settled,

I will deal with you.
