Today is the first elimination build.

We're gonna lose the first team from LEGO Masters.

They will not win 100 grand,

and they will not be in the running anymore to win

the title of LEGO Masters Australia.

As some of the keener eyes in the room may have guessed,

today's build is to do with the globes you see on the benches.

Everybody's picked up a snow globe,

given it a shake and observed the magical world inside.

Today, each team will be given their own snow globe

to create whatever they desire inside.

Then, at the judging,

we will be able to bring it to life with the magic of real-looking snow!

(CHEERING)

Brickman, what are you looking for in this build?

Being a snow globe, you can go a couple of ways.

It can either be contrasting or it fits in that natural environment.

You can really embrace the creativity,

perhaps the obscurity of a snow globe.

What is something that is totally awesome

that is gonna come to life with snow?

Real-looking snow.

Real, genuine... Looking.

..looking snow.

Sarah and Fleur, you guys obviously have the platinum brick.

You can choose to play it at the end of the judging.

So, you guys have a lot of power. Yeah.

Ryan and Gabby, you guys sadly are still cursed

'cause of the brick of doom.

We're literally the only people

that have got bricks down at the moment so don't stress.

It is the first elimination.

I think it's the realisation that we've had lots and lots of fun,

and now this is a competition and no-one wants to go home.

And the mood in the room is pretty dark.

If there was one thing I wanted to do on the show,

if there was one chance I got, it would be to do a Christmas build.

Whole point of a snow globe is the snow.

♪ Sleigh bells ring... ♪

♪ Are you listening? ♪ How are you feeling today?

I love Christmas so much, it's my favourite time of year,

so what we're doing is we're going for

the classic night before Christmas look.

So, the story is Santa's workshop.

Clock's about to strike midnight,

he's about to get the presents to the kids.

It's a snow blizzard

so they have to get out of there as quick as they can.

What we're happy about is we have a clear story.

We just have to make sure,

because we're doing Christmas and it's kind of predictable,

that it's phenomenal because, if it's not, it's not gonna be enough.

God, I love Christmas music.

Christmas is pretty great, isn't it?

Mm.

OK, one side of the house.

Mua-ha-ha-ha!

I built some water.

You go him there, him there and then tree here.

That's the body, and then the head's gotta be above the body

so it's gotta be up to, like, there.

Alright, Brickman, first elimination.

Now, the idea of a snow globe is its own little world.

The effect will be amazing when the snow comes on.

Is that the key to this build, to go,

"You gotta picture this with swirling flurries around it"?

Correct.

Does what you're creating fit in the world of a snow globe story?

So, that's basically a rough height.

You should have a great LEGO model beforehand and the snow enhances it.

Totally, not saves it.

Not saves it, that's the tricky bit.

Just work out how to get that angry...

I can do it but can I make it do it?

Yeah.

It is either it's a realistic reason for it being a snow globe

or it's the total opposite, tacky tourist-attraction type,

this thing's not meant to be in a snow globe but it is.

Yeah. That's what makes it cool.

He's had one too many Christmas hams.

Cool, so that's the connection there for it.

When I think snow globe, I think Christmas,

so what we really wanted to do was put our Aussie twist on it.

And Rudolph's gonna be pretty slim, hey?

Yeah, exactly, we're going for, like, big head and smaller body.

We can either go, sort of, pretty and elegant,

and that's just not us, so we decided to go really super tacky.

We're going for classic Australian summer Christmas.

We've got Santa on a deck chair, Rudolph mixing some mocktails,

classic beach, classic sun, all that kind of stuff.

So, it's in a snow globe

'cause we want it to be, like, that classic funny snow globe.

Hm!

We're gonna be super technical,

and create things we haven't really created before on the show.

I've never built a shirtless Santa before.

Yeah, I've never built the deck chair or anything like it before,

but it's the challenge to do it.

I love that you guys have gone for the classic Aussie Santa.

It's uniquely ours.

But I will point something out.

He's got moobs, a little bit, but you've kept them nipple-less,

which, I can tell you from previous experience, is the correct...

He's just got a bit of a dad bod, and that's Santa.

so why don't we have just an animal inside the snow globe?

So, we're gonna have red fox sitting, majestic.

And then the snow comes and winter hits.

That sounds amazing.

but it's all gonna come down to the look on the face of that fox.

I build a lot of LEGO animals in my spare time,

that's what I enjoy building at home,

and I really enjoy getting those little details

that create the expression in the animals' faces.

I'm starting to feel pretty good about this fox.

Emotions in animal faces are really subtle.

To get that subtlety in a LEGO build can be really, really difficult.

The eyes is where 80% of the creature's emotion comes from,

so, if I get those right, I think we're gonna be in a good spot.

We're kinda stumped a little bit today.

We have LEGO block in an elimination,

in the first elimination.

Like, we need to make sure that we know what the story is.

The story's the biggest thing. OK, alright.

This build is crucial today because, if you don't get it right...

Like, all I can think of when you think of snow is, like, a ski lodge.

Like... It's very tough.

What's gonna look good in the snow?

Feeling very nervous and it's very stressful.

Time's ticking away and we haven't started building.

Yeah.

Just thinking of classic Australian, like, a pair of thongs near Santa.

They don't have to be on him, they can just be next to him.

Bird, plane, superhero.

We can do, like, a futuristic thing.

A snow globe is a simple story, so we need to try

and come up with an idea that is very recognisable at a first glance.

But time's ticking away,

and we still haven't settled on an idea of what we're doing.

All the snow globes I've seen, especially travelling,

like, in Paris, it was the Eiffel Tower.

Snow globes mean so much to me.

See, whenever I travelled for work,

I would always bring a snow globe home for my little sister.

My favourite one is London, love London.

Stonehenge, it's incredible.

Stonehenge, I kinda like that idea.

It'll look cool. It'll look really cool.

I love it, let's do that. Cool.

Landmarks belong in a snow globe.

This is what we're going with. Yeah.

Today, we are building Stonehenge.

There's gonna be some druid sorcery happening,

and then we add, like, the LEGO mini-figs in to be, like, tourists.

This is the base.

So, I'm putting together these grey rectangles

in a studs-out way using plates.

This is allowing me to build a large structure very quickly.

And so you guys are doing a Stonehenge build, right?

It's gonna be a Stonehenge homage.

I mean, no-one even knows, what are they called?

It's got this weird history behind it

where the stones that make up the primary structure.

The trilithons and everything. Trilithons.

They're actually carved from a mountain that was 200km away

thousands of years ago.

And is it true that you got these pieces

from a brickpit that's 200km away?

I had to run.

It took me a while. That's incredible.

I'm very out of breath, yeah. I don't know how you did it.

So, like, these, you mean the...?

Oh, yeah, the different colours.

Red goes with the theme.

It's one of the lighter ones. This green.

Bright and tacky.

We need to get as much colour into this build as possible.

I mean, it's Australiana. I know, but...

I know what you mean.

We want some colour, a little bit of colour.

We need to win today, we really do.

Because we need to get rid of the brick of doom.

Other people are making beautiful things,

so we're taking a brave route.

We're gonna go as horrible as possible.

We're going for Australiana tack.

Ned Kelly-ish inspired,

kind of bushranger in a classic colonial outback town.

It's a thin door. That's alright. It is a thin door.

That's cool, they were skinny back then, all around, though.

I mean, he's got no hope of getting through it.

Obviously, the figurehead has to be Ned Kelly.

We want something big

that's disproportionate to the rest of the scene.

Yeah, we have to make it work there.

Too big?

No, I think that's fine.

I want a beard underneath, though. Yeah, yeah.

I still want to have some bushy eyebrows poking out, though.

Whatever works.

We think we're onto, hopefully, a winner with this idea.

Given it's elimination build,

a clear story was really important to us so that, when it does start

snowing, it adds that story element that's relevant to the snow globe.

Today's build, we are making a ship stuck in the ice, so these sailors

need to get their ship out of there before that storm starts.

I'm on sail duty.

As I'm building these sails, Dawei's doing what he's doing,

but he's also looking over my shoulder to see what I'm doing.

Whoa, whoa.

That actually looks really good.

I'm really surprised.

I'm hopeful that we have enough time to do everything that we want to do.

However, just laying down the hull itself has taken hours.

Pretty much 99% of sailing ships

are made out of the pre-built LEGO pieces.

We're going from scratch with individual bricks,

and, as a result, we really need to use up

every single bit of time we have to get the maximum product.

I need some more of those bricks. Sorry, Fleur, I'll be back.

This snow globe gives us the opportunity

to go nuts in the girly realm.

The light should really sparkle this, it should look really nice.

Yeah, I think it's gonna look epic.

So, we want to girly it up as much as possible,

make it pretty and just make it 'wow'.

We are building a music box with a beautiful ice skater,

but she's gonna be spinning in the middle,

surrounded by a wintry scene and a winter lake.

Fleur's first attempt at...

Making something spin. ..spinning something.

So, we're gonna do it in this one because we're pushing ourselves.

Even though Sarah and I have the platinum brick,

we do not want to play that on this one.

We want to be good enough on our build.

So, for the magic moment, it's all about turning.

I want to use gears to make her turn because she has to.

The team dynamic, I would say, is evolving.

We are moving from the way we build individually at home

to building together,

and we are having the most fun we've had so far.

where we're gonna be able to get in sync and do something amazing.

I'm really loving the theme.

It's like he's had a hidden ace up his sleeve.

So, if we have him there, a foot in the water, quite a relaxed look.

How do you feel about Gus's eyes on the fox?

Well, they're almost perfect, they really are.

Dare I say, it's emotional, you feel something for that fox.

It really is beautiful.

We've got Ryan and Gabby

still operating under a curse which we can't forget about.

I'm loving the theme, the Australiana of it.

It's a real winner for a snow globe.

But they're almost working on two different scales.

How are you feeling about, like, the arms now?

They're still too long but they're fine.

By going as large as what they have, they've grossly oversized them.

It's very hard to get other items of scale in there

now that they've made those.

The concept is great.

I can picture that world really well.

This is gonna be the boatiest boat in the land.

There's a fundamental LEGO problem, however.

You could avoid building the whole bottom of that ship

by actually building it on the base plate.

It would eliminate hours and hours worth of work alone.

Worries me that someone's building

with a fundamental LEGO problem in an elimination.

Yeah, not good.

I can't believe so much time has gone past.

It's scary.

So, we're getting a little bit worried

because time is ticking down rapidly and we're still on the ship.

I'm finding that, in the elimination challenge,

time management has just gone out the window because...

Not that he had it in the start, but, yeah.

Uh, sh...

In my head, I've got it all mapped out

in terms of what we need to do for this ship.

However, because we have to build the hull from scratch,

we've actually used up more than half our time,

but our ship is maybe only a quarter built.

Once the sail is finally up,

we then need to finish off the rest of our ship,

add in all the mini-figure details plus all of our ice structures,

which we haven't really started yet at all.

Dawei thrives on that last-moment pressure.

It kills me.

I'm the opposite.

Let's attach the sails, make sure they work,

and then we'll take them off and start on the ice.

I'm getting less and less and less optimistic

about whether we're actually gonna get this build done in time.

that I've done, literally.

Everything's riding on my skater here, and I'm, like, freaking out

in just a nice positive way, though.

and her head falls off at that particular moment, which is great.

Stonehenge is, unfortunately, just grey rectangles.

But now that I'm starting to detail and greeble these trilithons,

I'm actually really liking the way they're coming out.

Like, he's really thought these out meticulously,

and it's looking beautiful.

I'm hoping that my little stories

can, kind of, bring a little bit of a smile here and there.

I'm just gonna concentrate on figs now.

Yeah, you do that, figs. Figs and story.

So, Stonehenge itself is kind of on top of a hill,

but, because of how big these trilithons are,

we can't include the hill.

So, what I'm gonna do, though, is elevate some little areas.

Just remember there'll be air moving through, so...

Yeah, well, they'll be studded down. Oh, OK, yeah.

Around the Henge itself,

we're gonna have the head druid of the Solstice on top of the stone.

First druid man. What do you think?

Oh, they look phenomenal.

Is he alright? Yeah, he's fantastic.

A little bit lower,

you've got some tourists that are there taking a photo with a druid.

I'd say the journey through this build

has definitely been quite rocky.

Um, but we're definitely on track now, I think, definitely.

We've turned the corner, this is looking great.

Yeah. I love it.

For some reason, this one's really unstable.

See how it's leaning over?

I'm not sure what's causing that one to lean.

Normally in LEGO, they give you the fabric sails are ready.

Having to build these sails from scratch,

we underestimated how heavy the sails would be.

If it is a little bit too heavy...

..that might happen.

I'm gonna use a string to hold up the mast.

I'm trying to fix up all the little bits and pieces

that have fallen apart.

It's really intricate, and really time-consuming work.

Delicate.

Oh, this is ingenious.

Because today's an elimination build,

we really are trying to get this ship to an excellent standard.

We're going for classic Australian Christmas.

So, what we want to do is set the scene on the beach.

So, we want it to be a true Aussie Christmas.

We'll have an esky here.

Harry's started on a snake.

And we were thinking

the classic two palm trees over the back, shape the build.

Give us some more tackiness.

We can even just have one up the middle... up the guts, to be honest.

Careful with how those mushrooms are on, like, for the wind.

The most crucial thing is to get this sleigh's angle right,

putting it up and around everything to give that idea of movement.

I can't believe what we've pulled out in ten hours.

We're about to see what this ship looks like in a snowstorm.

I'm a bit nervous.

I'm so worried those sails are going to go flying.

I'll be honest with you, Dawei. There were times,

many times, many, many times,

I thought that this ship was not going to get done.

(DRAMATIC MUSIC)

We have no regrets over our build.

It harks back to the ship in the bottle type of look.

This ship's got a little bit lost, it's got a bit cold.

Icebergs have formed

and I've got some mini figs digging out the anchor.

They're trying to fish for some food

and the polar bear's grabbed onto their fish.

It's actually now telling a complete story.

There's a reason why this blizzard is happening -

because this ship is in trouble,

they're stuck somewhere that they don't want to be

and they are having to leave the ship.

It's storytelling perfected.

But some sort of plaque across the front would have been amazing.

That is what you are building right at the end, wasn't it?

because I can see that it's a ship anyway.

Classic beach, classic sun. All that kind of stuff.

That's awesome.

It does cast him in a totally different light,

that Santa's now in the snow.

It's funny.

I don't think you'd find a snow globe like this

anywhere else in the world apart from Australia.

It's actually set really well.

If you think about the composition, it goes from shorter to taller.

That's really important

and I was so happy to see the two of you

pushing yourself at the end

which you did with our friend the beach umbrella.

But the sign of a fantastic Lego model

is when something catches your eye and you're drawing me into it.

Rudolph, you used a construction worker's helmet for Rudolph's nose.

That's great. Nice part usage.

And then there's things like the crab

that are adding value to your Lego model.

Brickman, did it add to the scene?

You quite rightly and smartly picked a relatively easy object to build.

Rectangles.

They're completely hollow, don't need to be strong

and you used some great studs-out technique

to kind of make up lost time, if you like.

What, however, that did do was it set the scale

for the rest of your build, didn't it?

Yep. And you've got so much detail

all at ground level

and the poor mini figures, you could really hardly see

what was happening and it kind of lost that story element.

Still belongs in a snow globe, no question.

One thing that obviously draws your intention is Ned's face.

It's awesome.

The eyes in particular,

there's a little bit of beard coming out as well.

It looks fantastic.

But I think you got the composition a little bit wrong.

Your scale is a little bit muddled.

You've gone too big and heavy at the front

and it's kind of tapered down to the back.

But it definitely belongs in a snow globe

and that's a really important part, so you did really well there.
