The word is that nugget creek
has more gold up there than I can handle.
That's what I'm looking for right now.
More gold and bigger gold.
With a little bit of luck,
this could change our entire lives.
We picked an area that's great for gold.
Nobody can get to it.
Nobody, that sounds like us.
In a season unlike any other...
This nugget creek is not for the meek
and the weak.
This is a different... Back off.
Dangerous animal that just don't like us.
Move!
Dustin and his crew
are pushed beyond their limits
I'm tired of your attitude.
What the.
It's lifting up.
It came up. It just came up right now.
They're almost trapped.
Get out! We gotta go!
In a desperate bid to strike it rich.
All the experience in the past
is gonna come to bear right now.
Yeah!
I can see it. We got gold.
This is gonna happen for us.
We're gonna get more gold than we ever thought.
This is gonna be amazing.
- We got gold! - Yeah!
Nugget creek.
Hopefully, it lives up to its name.
Plus... We just had an epic adventure again.
An exclusive look... Watch your face!
At the all new season...
White water.
My goodness.
That's the biggest nugget
in gold rush history right there.
Right now, I'm going out on a limb here
to better our season for the...
For the biggest and best gold that I can get.
I'm sick of just making it.
It's time to find some real gold.
For over 10 years,
Dustin hurt has battled the deadly Alaskan wilderness
in the pursuit of a fortune in gold.
It could be the best thing I've ever done
or the dumbest thing I've ever done.
But this season,
he plans to gamble his life savings
on the most remote claim he's ever mined
in a bid to collect its legendary nuggets.
So, what are we looking at?
It's a quick layout of nugget creek.
Zero access, middle of nowhere.
It's pretty steep.
Yeah, it does look steep,
but told there's good gold in it
and it hasn't been hit as hard as McKinley.
An untapped gold claim
is even rarer than the treasure it could contain.
And if the rumors are true,
few have braved the remote location
of nugget creek.
Kayla, how you liking the flight?
It's a little weird.
Is this your first time in a helicopter?
Yeah.
I'll be damned.
Since the first Alaskan gold rush of 1897,
a frenzy of miners have hunted for gold
on porcupine, McKinley, and cahoon creeks.
Legend has it, the same mother lode
that delivered over $160 million in gold
runs through the mountain
to the remote far side and nugget creek.
Right here is where I think the claims start
and go up that way.
- Way the hell up there. - Okay.
There's probably been a few hobbyist divers,
but nothing like us.
They've gotten gold out of it.
It's been proven, but it's never been
ransacked like McKinley has.
I wanna show you something.
They found a four ounce nugget last year
right up there somewhere.
That's promising.
But they did this in, like, five days of digging.
You think it's gonna be doable as far as getting out here?
Don't know.
All my life, what I've done is figure out what I want,
and then figure out how to get there.
Well, there's only one way to find out.
Holy.
My god.
We gotta cross that.
Yeah, I don't know about that.
At this time of year,
there's only one way to get their mining gear
to the remote claim.
Call it nine miles up the mighty tsirku river.
This is the week to make this river crossing.
Yeah. Look at all the snow
up on the mountains and everything.
If that melts,
this is gonna be a raging river through here.
Right now, the river is at its lowest,
but they need to move fast
as melting glaciers mean the river
will soon be in full flood,
cutting off the new claim.
Let's go!
Doing it, Carlos.
Great. Yeah.
I think we're in trouble here.
Yeah, that's pretty goddamn deep.
That's deep, man.
This crossing looks like it has to be the worst.
The widest, the deepest,
the finish line is literally right there,
right freaking there.
Right now, I'm running out of options.
Here goes nothing.
I don't know what I'm doing.
- Yeah, still going. - -I don't know what I'm doing.
And it tipped the box.
I think they're happening.
I'm in trouble.
I bit off more than I can chew.
We're about to stall.
Please don't flip. Please don't flip.
Please don't flip.
Come on, baby. Please don't flip.
Please don't flip. Please don't flip.
My god.
Did that just happen?
Whoa!
That was insane.
That was spectacular.
Whoa!
Still rolling.
Never gonna forget.
Yeah, baby!
Against the odds,
the crew reached their new claim at nugget creek.
My god!
What a rush!
And they're now within reach
of life-changing gold.
Way to go, Carlos!
- Whoa! - Yeah!
We did it.
Whoa!
Whoa!
- Morning. - Good morning.
Coffee.
The first thing you'll have in the morning
if you can't wake up.
It's taken over two weeks of their 120-day season,
but Dustin is finally ready to hunt for gold.
One of the things I haven't told everybody,
the water here is steeper
than anything we've ever dug ever.
Before the crew can dive
for the legendary fortune,
they must first place a trail up nugget creek
to where Dustin believes his claim starts
in search of the plunge pools
that could contain the mother lode.
Looks like some pretty fast water.
- That's moving, dude. - Yeah, it's moving.
Right now, the water's raging,
but the harder it is to get to,
the more gold there's gonna be up there.
You're pretty solid about your situation now?
Look and listen to this thing.
Don't break it. No. I'm okay.
That's what I'm saying, we say pretty confident.
I mean, man, all this is all loose.
All right.
Confident as can be.
What I'll do is I'll get across,
I'll lash you off one of those boulders if I can.
- Are you coming with me? - Yeah.
We'll set up a bolt, and you guys can follow.
Just tie your rope off real tight on this.
Well...
If I die, I love you, guys.
Thanks for joining me on this adventure.
That is moving right there.
Yeah, it is.
I can't see him anymore.
That's fast.
This is dangerous.
It'll kill you.
You don't wanna go downstream in waders,
they fill up and that's that.
I'm not dying like this.
- Come on! - He's doing it.
Really crazy.
Woo!
What?
Crazy mother.
It wasn't easy!
I can't believe he did it.
Holy crap.
600 feet up creek... This ain't it.
It's farther up.
He said it's not the spot.
Where Dustin thinks his claim begins...
My god.
It's under that ice!
A 20-foot layer of snow and ice
stands between them and the gold.
You would think it was wintertime here.
We're getting nowhere right now.
I don't know if we're gonna be able to dig here.
This place is...
It feels... right now,
it feels like this place is out of my league.
Ooh, that's a fast one.
With 20 feet of snow and ice
covering his claim... Hope he lands right.
Dustin calls in the only man
with enough experience
to overcome the frozen barrier.
Woo-hoo!
That's a grand entrance you made there.
Goddamn, I made it.
Hey.
What's going on, Fred?
- How y'all doing? - There you go, Fred.
Goddamn, Carlos.
Good to see you, man.
- Let's go, Fred. - Yeah. Yeah.
This has been the hardest to get to place
we've ever been, I think.
It's dangerous.
I can imagine.
Problem what we're dealing with right now
is there is lots of ice and snow right now.
Tons of it.
I'm stoked to get out there and take a look at that thing
and give it a critical eyeball and... Yeah.
See if I got any ideas.
After decades operating
in the toughest conditions
Fred came up with an idea to use a heater
to try to melt the ice.
There it goes right there.
Fred knows to always work smarter, not harder.
So, this is it?
This looks fancy.
This is a Cadillac, man, for hot water heaters.
That's gonna open up a big hole, I think.
We got water.
Lots of it.
Fred's plan is to repurpose
a diver hot water system
to melt the snow and ice from above
clearing a path to their fortune.
Holy. Y'all did it!
All the snow has melted.
Woo!
- Yeah! - Woo!
It's going.
Dude, look at that Boulder.
I see it.
Just seeing that Boulder by itself
makes me think of how much gold is underneath it.
This is where we're gonna be for the season, guys.
This is it.
I'm excited.
It's a new adventure.
They've known there was gold in this thing
for a hundred years and it's still there.
If I can pull this off,
this could change all of our lives
and that's what I'm hoping for right now.
A month into the season,
they can finally access the creek bed
on Dustin's claim
and see if nugget creek lives up to its name.
The fellas brought up a bunch of dirt.
Maybe they think there's a little bit of gold in it.
I think we go ahead and find out if there is.
Hey.
Hey, Dustin!
Hey.
Holy crap!
Let's go!
No way!
Yeah. That's some gold, man.
That chunk of gold.
Holy cow.
That's good gold, dude!
We did it!
- Hell yeah. - Yeah.
I think you're in for a bonanza.
I was getting worried
that we were gonna run out of cash.
We're gonna find gold real soon.
This is exciting.
Despite costing them a third of the season...
Today marks a good day
that we're moving forward, finally getting on mission.
It's our first dive in the water.
Dustin and his crew
have established their remote operation.
Put the hot water on, dude,
and I'm ready to rock and roll, guys.
And they're now ready to dive for gold.
Hot water is going on.
Okay, Carlos, have a good dive today.
All right, guys, going in.
Diver in the water.
It's beautiful, man.
It's beautiful.
I have a feeling we're gonna make
our freakin' billions here.
Woo-hoo!
I feel good!
To make up for lost time, Dustin doubles down,
sending Kayla and her crew
to target another gold cache...
You can go ahead and fire it up.
All right.
600 feet up creek.
I'm really excited to finally be getting
in the water and get to work.
Hopefully, we start seeing gold.
Kayla's crew think nugget creek bedrock
is just 8 to 10 feet deep.
If they're right,
they could soon be dredging bedrock gold.
The dredger is running material.
That is it. We are in the water.
We are mining now.
Ready to rock and roll.
James, can you hear me?
That was really close.
It's like the gold gods of nugget creek
don't want us to get the gold.
I don't see anything big yet.
A lot of pyrite.
There's a lot of pyrite.
Come on.
Not one speck.
How far down you think he dug?
About four and half, 5 feet maybe.
Wow.
We still have a ways to gold.
It's not on bedrock.
After nine weeks and no gold in the sluice...
It's freaking me the out.
Like, nobody understands how important
this really is right now.
Dustin is getting desperate.
Ready?
Looks good.
There's a huge Boulder, I don't think it's gonna move.
But I'd love to crack it to see.
All right.
Hopefully I got it.
Come on now.
All right. Here we go.
Three, two, one.
What?
Did it go?
Seriously?
I don't know what's going on with this thing.
That's what I needed.
To fail more.
Whenever it feels like we're making progress,
something sets us back.
No generator means no electricity
to the blasters used to clear the path
to bedrock gold.
Hold on.
Let me take a look at it.
Now, I'm just standing around.
Why are you so mad? Like, I'm just trying to help.
I don't understand what I did wrong.
You just came over, took over what I was doing.
Unless, I can stand here and watch you,
if that's what you want.
No, just call it a day.
Don't even worry about the generator.
- No. - The generator.
I gotta get out of here.
It's way too much effort for no gold.
Nearly halfway through his season,
Dustin's life savings are on the line
with broken equipment and crew,
he risks losing it all.
He's cracked under too much pressure.
This is a stressful situation.
I don't know how many strikes he's gonna take
before Dustin says that's it.
I think that was strike two.
I'm hoping it wasn't strike three.
Dustin is halfway through the toughest season ever.
And it's pushed him and his crew to their breaking point.
Dustin is back and I'll take that
as a positive note.
Gotta get back to work.
Get this party started.
But once again, another vital crew member is Mia.
What's going on?
What's going on is Dustin fired Wes.
That's what's going on.
What's going on?
- Just don't feel it, man. - About what?
About everything, about the whole deal, what's going on.
What whole deal?
I'm just not motivated
till we figure out is Wes coming back or...
- What... - I'm being strong-armed right now,
- and I don't like it. - No. I...
Tell you that right now, 'cause I don't like it,
he has to go.
It has nothing to do with strong-arm
and it has nothing to do with disrespect, you know?
Okay.
I got pissed off, man.
It was getting to me so bad I was ready to quit this job
and when I quit, you all go away.
You all go do your own thing.
I still have residual
and I don't wanna take out on him,
so I asked him...
Not to come up for a little bit.
I can't tell you how much of a relief that is.
We live to work another day.
Live to work another day.
Abso-freaking-lutely.
To conquer the creek
and fill their pockets with gold,
the crew overcomes their differences
to get back to diving again.
Today, I just gotta try my hardest
to get us down to a pay layer.
That's my goal.
I got this. All right.
Try not to get his hair.
All right. You ready to rock and roll?
It's going down.
Make a hole. Make a hole.
I can't believe it.
I just pulled this huge
8 or 9-foot Boulder I'm on.
I'm doing the splits on it right now.
No, I'm trying to get rid of this sucker today.
I am ready to drill.
I'm ready for two power heads.
James is trying to blast a part of rock.
There's no telling how much gold
that could be sitting underneath it as well.
So, this will be a big win
if we get this huge Boulder out today.
Are you ready?
Ooh. Ooh.
Got one off my butt.
It worked.
Okay. We're gonna start dredging, ready?
All right, man.
Still have about 6 feet.
See any gold?
Well, it's starting, man.
I knew there was gold here.
That's gold, dude.
That's gold!
That's awesome, dude.
Just wait till we get to the bottom
and get those big nuggets.
It's only gonna get way better.
That gives me a Woody.
I wanna know if the rumors were true
about gold nugget creek.
Hey, let's see if it lives to its name.
But in Alaska, good fortune can turn on a dime.
This water is coming up.
Instead of cleaning out bedrock nuggets,
the crew find themselves
on an emergency rescue mission.
I never thought I would ever see anything like this.
I thought I seen all the flash floods
up in McKinley, I thought I seen it all.
This is by far... It came up.
It just came up right now.
It's dangerous, move away.
And the winch is underwater.
When we came, that winch was way out of water.
We need to save that dredge.
Everything else to help out Kayla's crew.
Just don't die.
This ain't showing any signs of stopping
and it's still raising.
What are we doing?
Tie up the dredge.
Trying.
Holy.
A tidal wave could come at any time.
We need to get out of here.
The only escape from Kayla's site
is on the boardwalk that's about to disappear.
They're almost trapped.
Get out! We gotta go!
Go, gotta go. Go!
Go, go, go, go!
Hurry the up.
We're about to lose everything
and there's nothing I can do but watch it happen.
This place is destroyed.
Everything we have is underwater right now.
This is a fubar.
I couldn't sleep all night.
This is a different game, man.
I've never seen the water come up that fast.
That was chaos.
I'm from New Orleans
and we would leave and get evacuated.
And you don't know if your area got smashed,
and then you come back to see what...
What's been done to your house is that same feeling, like,
"let's go check out to see what the devastation is."
How's it look?
Holy.
It looks like a tornado hit our tent.
My god.
Check this out.
My god.
Look at our dredge.
It's buried.
This whole engine and pump was underwater.
, that completely broke our box.
Nonoperational.
Look at all the boulders built up right here.
That was a deep hole.
Yeah.
We were on the verge of getting gold.
My god.
Holy.
Devastation came through
and just annihilated everything we worked for
for the last two months.
I don't recognize this creek anymore.
This may have done us in.
Wait a minute. No way.
What?
It dug it out for us.
Dude.
Look at this.
Holy cow.
Wow.
Took out a good 4 feet of our overburden.
So, we don't have to do all that work underwater.
That's crazy.
With any luck, there's gonna be boatloads of gold under it.
Dustin's 12-foot dive hole
has been filled in by the flash floods,
but just up creek, the monster storm
has cleared out the dirt beneath the giant Boulder.
Let's see if he can put his name to the test,
the gold hound.
We'll see.
If there's nothing, we're in a big trouble.
What you got, man?
I swear that looks like gold.
Yup. That's gold. Look at that.
Hell yeah, dude.
That's great, man.
Good job!
This pan of pickers is proof
that the ground beneath big-ass Boulder
could contain the jackpot.
James found some gold.
Everyone's always said it's up here.
It's so hard to get to. We know that now.
You just gotta keep working at this.
If the weather will hold out for, like, two weeks,
we're gonna crush this.
Up ahead
a special preview... How bad would I get hurt?
Really bad.
Of the all new season...
How come the gold's gotta be in the most dangerous spot?
White water.
Now, that's a piece of gold right there, boys.
We did it.
If we don't make huge progress,
we're not gonna make it this year.
I want both dredges in the water.
Just a month left in the season,
Kayla's going all-in.
Heck, yeah. Well, that makes me feel good.
Yeah, that sure is a pretty sight.
Two dredges in the water side by side.
I'll start on this side and you start on that side,
- then we'll meet in the middle. - -Okay.
We know there's gold here.
We just gotta fight through all this and get to it.
Here we go.
The water.
So, that got real dark real fast.
Muddy water is a sign of a landslide upstream.
I don't think I've ever seen it that dark.
Lots of debris coming down.
Once again, just as the crew
take a step towards bedrock gold...
If we're in this water
when that flash flood comes through, we're dead.
The creek forces them two steps back.
We have to find gold.
We don't have very long left in the season.
I think it's starting to weigh on everyone.
And the cracks begin to show.
- I don't care. - I want to use my own.
You're not the goddamn boss.
Be a little cry baby about like that.
What the is wrong with you?
I'm tired of your attitude.
How about you go back to camp?
All right.
I try to make things work.
You make it worse.
The I do?
- You do. - With your attitude,
you've been bringing all week long to work.
You're making it worse.
Well, with your attitude that you bring,
you've been making the season worse.
Get the out of my face, Scott.
I'm done with you.
I put my heart and soul into this.
That's all there is... That's all there is to it.
Work my ass off.
It's time for me to go.
Time for me to go home.
With all due respect, man,
I think you're gonna hate yourself, man,
in another month.
Please, man. You've jumped the gun on that one.
It's time for me to call it.
Wish you all the absolute best.
Man, I'm sorry to hear this.
I wish you'd stick around, dude.
All right, man.
Thanks for everything, brother.
Yeah.
You don't wanna go, brother.
- Be safe. - I wish you good luck.
I got a family back home that I need to go back to.
It's time.
It's just time.
As the trees begin to turn,
the race to uncover nugget creek's legendary gold
kicks into overdrive.
I'm excited.
I'll try to think about a successful dive
when I get gold and move a lot of boulders
and come out safely.
Hopefully, Carlos can find us some gold.
We really need it.
Check here.
- All right. - It's time to go underwater.
All right.
Let's see what we got.
One rock at a time.
I hope this whole Boulder
don't freaking come down on us.
A little dangerous.
That's why I keep watching up there
to see if anything moves.
Two-thirds of that rock
is trying to fall in that hole.
Every time I look at that thing,
that thing gives me the willies.
Every so often, man,
I have to come up and look at it.
I didn't wanna flex on it, man,
because the way I look at it...
If I don't look at it, it's doing like this.
Wes, could you bring the basket up
a little bit more, please?
- You got it. - All right.
- There we go. That's good. - Thank you, sir.
I think I got into that red layer already.
Look at that coming out.
There you go.
Next thing after that is gold, so it should be there.
Anyone that's ever found gold here
talks about relating this red material to gold.
It kind of backed up, it's kicking.
All right. He's got you doubled down
and he's about to stake it.
There's gold.
It's about time!
I knew there was gold in here.
I knew there was gold in here!
After over three and a half months of hardship,
nugget creek finally starts to deliver
on its promise of untold riches.
Finally, there's some gold.
I don't know how much season we got,
but if it starts looking like this,
it's gonna add up quick.
And the breakthrough inspires both crews.
Let's get into some dirty stuff there.
I see a piece of gold in the bottom.
Hell yeah.
Yeah.
There are pieces all over.
Boom, boom, boom, boom.
This could be our best season ever.
Some hope. We've been struggling.
I mean, really struggling.
It's finally our time.
I'm ready to crush this.
We're waking up to reports of flash flooding
and mudslides as the effects of typhoon merbok
continue to hammer parts of Alaska.
Officials are recommending all residents
remain indoors until the storm passes.
After five months,
both crews are finally on the gold,
but nugget creek isn't prepared
to give it up without a fight.
, that's so loud.
Holy crap.
A massive storm bearing down on nugget creek.
I make a toast to you guys.
It has been a good time.
Fred heads home.
Now, if you take my direction,
you are gonna get a lot of gold.
It's about 20 feet from where you're working.
Wherever I'm digging.
20 feet away. Got it.
Y'all got one hell of a storm coming in here soon.
There's a big storm coming right now.
- Huge. - It's either gonna drop snow
or a ton of rain.
We'll see what happens.
Well, I finally realized
y'all are tougher than I am.
You can hear the boulders
rolling down the creek. It sounds like thunder.
Sounds like I'm in a Texas thunderstorm right now.
After over five months of backbreaking work,
just as both crews finally get on the gold...
Ten years I've been up here, I've never seen this.
The biggest storm of the season
threatens to Rob them of their fortune.
This is a freaking nightmare.
So, I wonder what we can see if we can at least
get around the corner and look up towards your site.
I'm going down.
Well, I think it's safe to say we aren't going to our site.
No.
I hate to say it, but I think this is it.
I think this is the end.
Well, that's depressing as.
It seems like a good day to just start drinking.
Trying to keep positive,
but I'm finding it harder and harder to do that.
This is inside of the winch box.
- This winch is. - The upstream winch is.
Looks like disaster to me.
All right, guys. Let's see what we can salvage.
Dredge is in pretty bad shape right now.
All inside the engine is all solid gravel.
Hoses are bent and broke.
I mean, this was something else what went down here.
Seeing our dredge beached up,
literally reminds me of the aftermath of Katrina.
Disarray of freaking hate and destruction, man.
From the fabled four-ounce nuggets.
We were on bedrock and now, what I'm looking at,
right where we were diving, looks like a Boulder field.
All that hard work that we did
it would take forever to move it out of the way.
Meaning, they could be back to bedrock
and the gold in just days.
To get this dredge in the water running.
I mean, we're free to come give you guys a hand,
so we can just hit this as hard as we can.
- Last push. - -That sounds like a good idea.
We know there's gold here.
Yeah, absolutely.
Undermined by relentless currents,
the 50-ton Boulder
could have crushed Dustin's crew.
Out of all the I've seen up here,
that's probably the scariest thing I've ever seen.
I'm gonna call in the season. That's it.
We're done with this.
Just imagine if we got to dive every week,
week in, week out, this pan would be full.
These few ounces of chunky gold
are proof they're scratching the surface.
So hey, I got to get a couple jobs
during the wintertime to keep the family happy.
It was a hard year.
It was my hardest year to date.
I don't think I've worked so hard my entire life
for so little.
