Again, I'm Sarah Lacey.

My name is DJ.

Can we talk for a minute?

I wanted to come introduce myself.

I'm supposed to be at a
beautiful relaxing resort.

And that is exactly what I want.

And if you cannot accommodate that,

This is a very poor village.

I don't know what you
expected out of this trip,

but these people struggle
every day to find food

and safe drinking water.

I don't know how you can make such demands

when you come on a mission trip.

- Mission trip?

What are you talking about?

- This is the Holy Name Mission.

The one you volunteered for.

- Oh hang on.

There's a mistake.

I'm supposed to be in Spain.

Not at a mission camp
in, where am I, anyway.

- Kenya.

- Kenya.

Africa?

How in the world did I end up in Africa?

- Well I can't answer that.

All I know is that when
Harris went to the airport

to pick up the new doctor,

Dr. Miller from Miami, Florida,

you got off the plane, flagged him down,

called him Grandpa, and then
passed out in his truck.

He brought you here before
the road washed out.

We put you in here.

I thought you were just tired.

- Hang on.

So the old man at the airport
was looking for a Dr. Miller?

- Yes.

Dr. Miller from Miami, Florida.

- But I'm DJ Miller from
Los Angeles, California.

- What?

- I'm confused.

- Wait a minute.

You're not Dr. Miller?

You're not even a doctor?

- No.

But I've played one on TV.

- Look, Dr. Mil, DJ, whoever you are,

we were supposed to have a doctor

come to camp and help us here.

I have no idea God's purpose
for sending you here.

- Yeah, well I think we can both agree

that I am no doctor.

I'm an actor, and a
pretty famous one at that.

Look, let's just chalk this up

as a big misunderstanding.

I'll call a taxi, grab my things,

and I'll get on my way,

and you can go back to saving the world

and feeding the masses,
the fishes and the loaves

or whatever it is you do here.

- Mr. Miller, do you have any idea

what we do in this place?

- Well judging by the bible on the table

I'd say you're probably filling heads

full of mumbo jumbo.

- Mr. Miller, these are
some of the sweetest,

kindest people I have ever met.

God made them just like
He made you and me.

The only difference between
us and them, Mr. Miller,

is privilege.

Oh, and gratitude for what they do have.

All that stuff you have in life

these people couldn't even dream of.

They live simply, smart.

They focus on family and survival,

and we are here to help
them with those things

as well as teach them a
few things they don't know.

We teach them about God and His love.

We teach them and we show them the way.

- Yeah, but why?

Because we want to share the
good news of Christ with them.

As Jesus said, "Man does
not live by bread alone

"but by every word that
comes from the mouth of God."

- Well, best of luck with that.

I'll just grab my things and be on my way

back to my vacation.

- I'm afraid you won't be
going anywhere anytime soon.

- I'm not, but nature is.

The road washed out last night.

for at least two weeks.

single women in this camp.

and wait for the rains to dry out

and help out around here.

- Yeah, but Debbie said you
guys were looking for a doctor.

And I am no doctor.

Yeah we were expecting a doctor.

A strong back, an extra set of hands

could be useful right now.

See, God gave us gifts and abilities.

He expects us to use them.

A short shipment came in.

She's got a lot on her plate.

- Well when Harris picked
you up from the airport

he also picked up our latest donation

of medicines and supplies,
and the shipments,

they've been getting
smaller and smaller lately.

I can't complain too much.

What we lack in financial
aid we make up for

in prayer and spiritual
aid, so it balances out.

- I'm sure that goes a long way

toward feeding and healing these people.

- It does in a way.

It's just a different kind of healing.

- Something tells me
these people did just fine

before your prayers and
bibles came into town.

- Not a believer.

- Oh I believe in what I can see.

And what I can see is
a bunch of white people

coming in here pushing their beliefs

when all they really
need is food, medicine,

and clothing.

They don't need prayer because
they don't have a prayer.

- True faith is believing
without seeing, Hollywood.

- Well I can't help you out there.

All I want to do is find
a phone or something

and make a call and get out of here.

- Well why don't you try
the 7-11 around the corner?

The light shines in the darkness

we can't just come in here,

throw up a building and call it a church

and expect other cultures
are just gonna follow

our traditions.

We had to let them become part of it.

Everyone was doing fine before
we came into this village.

They don't really need us.

But we had something new

We wanted to show them God.

We show his love by the
things we do around here.

We're not trying to change
any traditions and ways.

We're just trying to show them God's way.

She found this place.

See, she was adopted.

Never knew her real folks.

The people that adopted
her, they were missionaries.

She's been living in places
like this her whole life.

It's all she's ever known.

- Well that explains it.

- If you think I'm gonna
get back in that river,

Tomorrow six o'clock, I

She's been wanting to
build this place for years.

For some reason or another

it just hasn't been able to get done.

We were really hoping to make
this dream come true here.

- What dream?

- A church.

A sanctuary, Hollywood.

A place for everyone to worship.

Not just a church.

It could be a school or hospital.

Anything's better than that
Army tent we've been using.

It could be a lot of things.

- So what's the problem?

It looks like you guys
are well on your way.

- We're on our way but
like I told you yesterday

we're not gettin' the supplies we need.

Not as much as we need.

Shipments have just been small.

Not gonna have anything left over

to get this done.

Plus with all the men out of the village

off to war, we're just short staffed.

- What's that over there?

- Oh yeah I better show you that, too.

This is a storm shelter.

- Oh like the one in Karate Kid II.

- What?

- Yeah, you know, when
Daniel-san and Miyagi

hunker down in the bunker

during the big storm in Okinawa?

It was a great scene.

Anyway, Daniel-san saves the little girl

from the bell tower.

And they both get away free.

I guess you've never seen it.

- Back to the real world.

Storms out here are really bad.

This shelter protects everyone
when they come through.

- These storms here are big.

You know just for the record,
the biggest storm in history,

1970, the Bhola cyclone hit
Pakistan, Bangladesh today.

And India's West Bengal November 12, 1970.

Estimated 300,0000 to
500,000 people were killed.

Making that the deadliest natural disaster

in recent history.

Okay.

- Anyway.

Look, if we tell you
to get to the shelter,

just get there right away.

Don't hesitate.

(bells chiming)

These appetizers are really good.

Whatever this is, it's gone bad.

They call those jungle beetles.

It's kind of a delicacy here.

They were prepared today
in honor of your arrival.

- Yeah well I'm not eating that.

- It is a great insult to your hosts

more than these villagers

have had to eat all week.

- You can't be serious.

Why don't they just move to the city?

Anything to stop living in this place.

- You know, Hollywood, the only thing

out of place here is you.

Cultures have lived like
this for thousands of years.

Who are we to say it's wrong?

- The Kikuyu have very strong beliefs

and just because we don't understand them

doesn't mean that we can disrespect them.

- I think that guy has a question.

When he raises his hand it
means he's got something to say.

- I tried it a couple of times.

- At the dawn of time

a great supreme being

named Ngai

created his home on earth

beside a tower of mountain.

Beside of the mountain

he built a countryside so beautiful

it was fit for the gods.

And on the land he placed tiny animals

like squirrels.

And jags and elephants.

Finally Ngai created man.

And a woman

he gave the land to all the men

and their women.

And their descendant.

- That is the story told by the Kikuyu.

The mountain they're
talking about is Mt. Kenya,

and that beautiful
countryside surrounding it,

is the modern day nation of Kenya.

- That story.

It sounds familiar.

- A little like Adam and Eve?

- The Kikuyu are not so different from us.

They have strong tradition and yearning

for god and meaning in their lives.

We like to share with them the bible,

including the creation account.

So that they can know their
true creator and savior.

- Well that doesn't change the fact

that I'm not eating bugs.

and the spirit of god was
hovering over the waters.

I don't know about
hovering over the waters,

but this place is definitely
formless and empty.

(crickets chirping)

- There are a lot of
things we need, Mr. Miller.

And unfortunately indoor
plumbing is not at the top

of that list.

- Look, I know we got

It's looking pretty good.

- Thanks, I just keep praying

we'll get it finished this time.

- What do you mean?

- Well, like I said, lot
of things on that list,

Mr. Miller, and that church

is right above indoor plumbing.

- Then why did you even start on it?

- It's a dream, I guess.

Every camp I've ever
been to I try to build

an actual church building.

And every time I start something happens.

- Like what?

Storms, wars, stampeding rhinos.

- Stampeding rhinos?

- Not as uncommon as you might think.

- I didn't even think they could run.

- They're surprisingly swift and agile.

- I guess I need to keep reminding myself

that I'm not in LA anymore.
