Original subtitles

[man whispers] Brother.

[waves cresting, faint]

[man whispers] Mother.

[waves continue cresting]

It was they who led me to your door.

[waves continue cresting]

[seagulls calling]

[soundtrack: choir singing classical music]

[Mother] The nuns taught us there were two ways through life โ€’

the way of nature...

and the way of grace.

You have to choose which one you'll follow.

Grace doesn't try to please itself.

Accepts being slighted, forgotten, disliked.

Accepts insults and injuries.

Nature only wants to please itself.

[Father] Bless, O Lord, this food โ€’

[Mother] Get others to please it too.

[Father] Your loving and faithful service โ€’

[Mother] Likes to lord it over them.

[Father] Bless these boys.

[Mother] To have its own way.

[no audible dialogue]

It finds reasons to be unhappy

when all the world is shining around it...

and love is smiling through all things.

[Mother] They taught us that no one who loves the way of grace

ever comes to a bad end.

I will be true to you...

whatever comes.

[paper falling to floor]

[agonized sob] Oh, God!

[engines roaring]

[no audible dialogue]

[engines continue roaring]

[engine noise fades]

[bell tolls]

[bell tolls]

[Mother whispers] My son.

[Mother sobs] I just wanna die,

to be with him.

[footsteps]

[man] He's in God's hands now.

[Mother] He was in God's hands the whole time.

Wasn't he?

My hope.

My God.

"I shall fear no evil.

Fear no evil, for you are with me."

What did you gain?

"Be not far from me, for trouble is near."

[Father] Go on now. We're all right.

We're all right.

Thank you. Thank you.

You have your memories of him and, uh โ€’

You have to be strong now and โ€’

I know, uh, the pain will โ€’

It will pass in time, you know.

It might seem... hard, my saying that,

but it's true.

[Mother whispers] I don't want it to.

Life goes on.

People pass along.

Nothing stays the same.

You still got the other two.

- [gasps] - The Lord gives, and the Lord takes away.

That's the way he is.

He sends flies to wounds

that he should heal.

- [Mother gasps, screams, faint] - [thunder rumbling]

[Father] I never got a chance to tell him how sorry I was.

One night he...

punched him โ€’ himself in the face

for no reason.

He was sittin' next to me at the piano, and I criticized the way he'd turned the pages.

I made him feel shame.

My shame.

[whispers] That poor boy.

That poor boy.

[man] How did you come to me?

In what shape?

What disguise?

[man] I see the child I was.

[boys chattering, shouting, faint]

I see my brother.

True.

Kind.

He died when he was 19.

[no audible dialogue]

[phone rings]

Just check this โ€’ this one against this.

She wants to get back together.

Chapter's closed. Story's been told.

What are you gonna do?

Experiment.

Yeah, it's all about your career.

You don't understand anything.

I just feel like I'm bumping into walls.

[colleague, faint] I don't know how to be fair.

[Father] The world's gone to the dogs.

People are greedy. They keep getting worse.

[colleague continues speaking, faint] Years later โ€’

[Father] They try to get you into their hands.

[colleague] Drifting back into the same swamp.

Hey, Dad, I'm sorry I said what I said.

[stammers]

Yeah. Yeah. I think about him every day.

I just shouldn't have said what I did, and I'm sorry.

No, it's just, oh... this day.

- [Father] What are you thinking? - [Man] I know you did everything you could.

[colleague] And only two of those were turned down by the client.

[people chattering]

[man] How did I lose you?

Wandered?

Forgot you?

[seagulls calling]

[whining]

[man] Remember.

[woman] Oh, no, you don't! [laughs]

See? There, you're happy.

Kind of.

[no audible dialogue]

[no audible dialogue]

[colleague speaking, faint]

Okay?

So... we barely broke even.

[Brother] Find me.

[man] How did she bear it?

Mother.

[Mother screams]

- [cicadas chirping] - [frogs croaking]

[Mother] Was I false to you?

[Mother] Lord.

Why?

Where were you?

[soundtrack: soprano singing classical]

[soprano continues singing classical]

[Mother] Did you know?

[soprano continues singing classical]

Who are we to you?

Answer me.

[thunder rumbling]

[soprano continues singing classical]

[soprano, choir singing classical]

[rumbling]

[rumbling continues]

[soprano singing fades]

[rumbling continues]

[Mother] We cry to you.

My soul.

My son.

Hear us.

[gurgling]

[thunder rumbling]

[soundtrack: choir singing classical music]

[choir music stops]

[soundtrack: choir resumes singing classical music]

[wind gusting]

[waves cresting]

[rapid heartbeat]

[soundtrack: choir resumes singing, faint]

[Mother] Light of my life.

I search for you.

[soundtrack: choir continues singing]

My hope.

My child.

[bell tolls]

[thunder rumbling]

[bell tolls]

[man] You spoke to me through her.

You spoke with me from the sky.

The trees.

Before I knew I loved you,

believed in you.

When did you first touch my heart?

[woman, faint] Hang on. Here we go.

[Mother gasping]

[baby crying, faint]

[cicadas chirping]

[wind gusting lightly]

[cicadas continue chirping]

[minister] And manfully to fight under his banner

against sin, the world, and the devil.

[boy squeals]

[no audible dialogue]

We had the commander over for dinner. This little devil bit him right on the ankle.

[no audible dialogue]

[whines]

[boy] Mama!

Me! [giggles]

[jangling]

[Mother] Rhinoceros.

Two alligator.

Two alligators.

[kisses]

[Mother] Kangaroo.

Kangaroo.

[Mother] Jump.

Jump. Jump.

Jump.

Jump.

- [toddler talking, faint] - [baby fussing]

Ah!

[fussing]

[toddler shouting]

Sweetheart.

Shh. Please.

- [toddler whines] - [Mother gasps]

I know โ€’

No! No.

[no audible dialogue]

[toddler] It's mine!

You found me.

[soundtrack: choir singing classical music]

You'll be grown before that tree is tall.

[toddler whispers] Blue. Far.

You.

[barking]

Were you afraid?

Come here.

[fussing]

- [sneezes] - [Father] Come here.

Now, come back here, Son. Stay out of there. That's the Spencers' yard, okay?

You see this line?

Let's not cross it. Do you understand?

Hmm? You understand?

You see this line? Lookit here. Look here.

Okay, now, come back here, Son. Come on back here.

Stay out of there.

[child giggling]

"'Now, my dears,' said old Mrs. Rabbit one morning,

'you may go into the fields or down the lane,

but don't go into Mr. McGregor's garden.

Father had an accident there. '"

That's where God lives.

[man] Good night.

We'll see you in five years.

[laughing]

Want to eat a grasshopper?

I found a dinosaur bone!

- Oh! - Is that a rock?

No.

[gasps]

- Aah! Hey! - [laughing]

[Mother] Boys!

Come home!

Hey!

- [howls] - [dog barking]

Come home!

[boys chattering]

- Whoo-hoo-hoo! - [chattering, laughing]

[chattering continues]

[Mother] You're filthy!

[chattering, laughing]

[Father] Bless this food to our use

and us to your loving and faithful service,

and make us ever mindful of those who are in need.

- Amen. - Amen.

[phonograph: classical music playing]

Will you pass the butter, please?

- "Can you pass the butter please, sir?" - Sir.

[Father] What'd you do today?

- Went to school. - After that?

What about the yard?

Did you put the runners in, like I asked?

Yeah.

Yes, sir.

[Father] Well, it didn't look like it.

[phonograph: classical music continues playing]

- Mmm? - Yes, sir.

[phonograph: classical music continues playing]

- Mr. Reese liked Jack's book report and โ€’ - [Father] What is that, sweetheart?

wanted him to make a model.

You know this.

[classical music continues playing]

Brahms.

[classical music continues playing]

- Son? - Sir?

Reach me my lighter.

Haven't you forgotten something?

You love your father?

Yes, sir.

[Mother] "And they went off to look for Kaa, the rock python.

They found him stretched out on a warm ledge in the afternoon sun,

admiring his beautiful new coat."

Who do you love the most?

I love you all three the same.

Tell us a story from before we can remember.

[Mother] Went for a ride in a plane once.

It was a graduation present.

[Jack whispers] Mother.

Make me good.

Brave.

[machinery rumbling]

- [Mother humming] - [Jack gasps]

Whoa! Aaah! Aaah!

- [laughs] - [Mother continues humming]

They fell.

Where's the nest?

There's a hole in its head.

- You can't hold 'em. - No, not right now.

I'll explain to you.

[youngest brother] Can it happen to anyone?

Shh.

[Jack] Nobody talks about it.

[Jack] Help me not to sass my dad.

Help me not to get dogs in fights.

Help me be thankful for everything I got.

Help me not to tell lies.

[Jack whispers] Are you watching me?

I wanna know what you are.

I wanna see what you see.

[classical music playing]

[classical music continues playing]

[Father chattering]

- Come here, you! - [laughing]

That funny?

[screen door slams]

You're gonna stand there, and you're gonna close this door quietly 50 times.

Count it out.

Three. Four.

Five. Six.

Seven. Eight.

Can't just yank off the top. You gotta โ€’ gotta get 'em by the root.

[organ continues playing classical music]

[Father] Your mother's naive.

It takes fierce will to get ahead in this world.

If you're good, people take advantage of you.

Every one of these top executives, you know how they got where they are?

Floated right down the middle of the river.

Don't let anyone tell you there's anything you can't do.

Don't do like I did. Promise me that.

I dreamed of being a great musician.

I let myself get sidetracked.

If you're looking for something to happen, that was it.

That was life. You lived it.

[classical music continues playing]

[man] Job imagined he might build his nest on high,

that the integrity of his behavior would protect him against misfortune.

And his friends thought, mistakenly,

that the Lord could only have punished him

because, secretly, he'd done something wrong.

But no.

Misfortune befalls the good as well.

We can't protect ourselves against it.

We can't protect our children.

We can't say to ourselves, even if I'm not happy,

I'm going to make sure they are.

We run before the wind.

We think that it will carry us forever.

It will not.

We vanish as a cloud.

We wither as the autumn grass

and, like a tree, are rooted up.

Is there some fraud in the scheme of the universe?

Is there nothing which is deathless,

nothing which does not pass away?

We cannot stay where we are.

We must journey forth.

We must find that which is greater than fortune or fate.

Nothing can bring us peace but that.

Is the body of the wise man or the just

exempt from any pain,

from any disquietude,

from the deformity that might blight its beauty,

from the weakness that might destroy its health?

Do you trust in God?

Job, too, was close to the Lord.

Are your friends and children your security?

There is no hiding place in all the world where trouble may not find you.

No one knows when sorrow might visit his house

any more than Job did.

The very moment everything was taken away from Job,

he knew it was the Lord who'd taken it away.

He turned from the passing shows of time.

He sought that which is eternal.

Does he alone see God's hand who sees that he gives?

Or does not also the one see God's hand โ€’

- [Father] I'm your man. - who sees that he takes away?

Or does he alone see God who sees God turn his face towards him?

[men chattering, faint]

Does not also he see God who sees God turn his back?

That's a friend of mine. He owns half the real estate in town.

Frank Johnson.

Started out as a barber.

But he built something big.

[boys laughing]

Now you'd think he was the fourth person of the Holy Trinity.

They never talk about their money.

Wrong people go hungry.

Die.

Wrong people get loved.

- The world lives by trickery. - [radio clicks on, off]

If you want to succeed, you can't be too good.

[laughing]

Hey there, young fellas. How y'all doin' today?

Do all y'all want some barbecue?

[children chattering]

[Father] How 'bout a pound of brisket?

I'm sorry.

Can I rope you?

If you want.

[squeals]

Good.

Caught me.

What's that called?

This is a butterfly.

Why do they call it that?

'Cause it floats.

[chuckles]

[Father] You just gonna sit around, picking lint out of your navel?

- You're gonna have a record. - Open. Let me see.

And it's gonna follow you around for the rest of your life.

If you mess up, you might not be able to get a security clearance.

People will ask why.

They'll point the finger at me.

All but you.

My son.

Did you get it all?

Yes, sir.

Stand like this. Right? Okay? Come on.

You act like you're scared, you're in trouble. You don't wanna fight, you don't want trouble.

The minute you see him blink, crack him. Okay?

- [Jack mutters] - Okay? Come on. Three-quarters.

Cover. You're gonna cover, right?

Okay, hit. Come on.

Nice. Nice. Harder. Nice. That's a good right. Let's see your left.

It's the most important thing. Okay?

You come in this way, you put your guard up.

Hit me. Come on. Hit me.

Come on! Come on, Jack, hit me.

Hit me. Hit me. Come on. Come on.

Here it is. Here it is. Hit it. Come on, Son! Come on, Son.

Left โ€’ What are you doing?

Brush yourself off.

Left. Don't leave your tongue out. You're gonna lose it.

Left. Left.

Right. Right.

Left. Harder.

Harder. Harder!

Come on, hit me. Hit me.

Come on, Son, hit.

Give me somethin'. Show me what you got.

Come on. Go on.

- You ready? - Mm-hmm.

[silverware clatters]

One meal.

Ah!

[chuckles]

Leave the table.

You too?

- You gonna continue to defy me? - No, sir.

You interrupted me.

I wasn't done yet.

Am I finished?

No?

- [mutters] No. - Thank you, Your Majesty.

[piano playing softly]

[piano continues playing]

[guitar begins playing]

[piano joins in]

[guitar pauses, piano continues low notes]

[guitar resumes with piano]

[Jack whispers] Makes up stories.

Original words.

[boys laughing]

He says don't put your elbows on the table.

[Father] You ready?

He does.

Insults people.

[no audio]

Doesn't care.

[Father] I remember when you were born.

[Jack] Mmm?

They wouldn't let me come home.

The navy said an officer must be present for the laying of the keel, but...

not at the launching.

[Father] I took my father for granted.

- [machinery humming] - [metal grinding]

A sweet man.

I thought he was weak.

A welder. Machinist.

He did what he could.

Real estate. Insurance.

He worked 12 hours a day, six days a week.

Forty years he served them. You know what he got for it?

A wristwatch.

[ticking]

Somebody ran him over and left him in the street.

Left him in the street to die.

For years I had one pair of pants.

Same green pants.

Had to run around in my shorts while my mother washed 'em.

[welding torch crackling]

You have no idea what it's like working for men you don't respect.

It makes you less than a man.

- [bell clanging] - [children chattering]

[teacher] Next word is "volcano."

Next word is "socket."

Please pass your answers to each other. We're gonna grade each other's papers now.

[children laughing, giggling]

[teacher] No interruptions, please.

Come on. Get your pencil out.

[teacher continues, voice fades] After the logs go to the paper mill...

[man] What is your name?

Jack.

Who gave you this name?

My sponsors in baptism,

where I was made a member of Christ,

a child of God,

an i-in-inheritor of the kingdom of heaven.

What is thy duty toward thy neighbor?

My duty towards my neighbor is to love him as myself.

- [barks] - [Jack whispers] Saw a three-legged dog.

Ran around...

like nothin' was the matter.

[no audible dialogue]

[engine droning]

[chattering]

Come here!

No, no, no, no!

I'm all muddy!

[Jack laughing]

Aaah!

Aaah! Aaah!

[people chattering]

- [diving board clatters] - [water splashes]

[whistle blowing]

Sweetheart!

Tyler! Sweetheart!

Honey? Honey?

Please, somebody โ€’

[no audible dialogue]

[laughing]

[thunder rumbling]

- [Jack yells] - [gasps]

[grunts]

[shouts]

[Jack whispers] Was he bad?

It's sort of embarrassing.

Will you die too?

You're not that old yet, Mom.

- Aaah! - [mixer whirring]

[whirring stops]

[Mother groans]

[Jack whispers] Where were you?

You let a boy die.

You'll let anything happen.

[children shouting, laughing]

I can't see! I can't see!

Why should I be good...

if you aren't?

Thank you.

Close.

Edges.

Bare.

Put that down.

Why's this bare here? Hmm?

- Grass won't grown under the trees. - Does at the Kimballs'.

- They have a yardman. - They have money.

Course, he inherited it.

I don't wanna hear one more word out of you, not till this is finished.

Hmm?

Hmm?

You're croppin' that too close.

Gonna have to keep that watered.

[boys giggling, chattering]

[whispers, faint]

[boys laughing]

Toscanini once recorded a piece 65 times.

You know what he said when he finished?

It could be better.

Think about it.

Twenty-seven patents your father has.

That means ownership. Ownership of ideas.

You gotta sew 'em up.

- Get 'em by the nuts, if you'll pardon my French. - We'll get 'em next time.

You can be rich.

You make yourself what you are.

You have control of your own destiny.

Can't say "I can't."

You say, "I'm having trouble.

I'm not done yet."

You can't say "I can't."

[Jack whispers] Why does he hurt us,

our father?

Come on, Dix! [smooches] Come on! Oh, yeah. Get it! Get it!

Go!

Give your father a kiss.

[phonograph: piano playing classical music, turntable drags]

[classical music continues, normal speed]

[phonograph: piano playing classical music, turntable drags]

[turntable dragging]

[chattering, faint]

[Jack] He lies.

- Pretends. - Can you do something for me?

You promise you'll do it without having to ask what it is?

Just have the confidence that what your father asks of you is right?

Yes, sir.

For the next half hour, will you not speak unless you have something important to say?

What'd you do today, my fine-feathered friend?

Sit on the front two inches of your chair.

Better for your posture.

I read that in the paper.

Did you actually buy this from Mr. Ledbetter?

- Don't explain. Just nod, yes or no. - [phonograph: classical music continues]

Hmm?

Be quiet.

What did you say?

Please.

- [Jack] Leave him alone! - Come here!

Honey!

- [needle scratches on record] - Leave him alone!

Come here! Get back. Come here.

Get out there!

[furniture clattering]

You turned my own kids against me.

You undermine everything I do.

How do you like it?

Stop it!

Stop.

[sobs]

[whispers] Stop it.

Stop it.

Stop.

Stop.

[groans]

[sobbing]

[sobs]

[soundtrack: choir singing classical music]

[Mother whimpering, faint]

[Mother crying, faint]

[stick hits rock]

- Did you practice your guitar? - Yes, sir.

[whining]

What are you doing out here...

in the rain?

Well...

[Grandmother] He's pitiless.

Like all weak spirits, he's just full of criticisms

and... contrariness.

He just refuses to see who he really is.

He's two people, you know. He just wants to...

be very, very kind one half of himself,

and the other half is as mean as a miser.

He wouldn't give you an egg.

He's jealous of the boys.

[chattering]

Things often get worse and worse when people have children.

It's well-known.

Love fades, or, you know, the beginning of it fades,

the passion goes, and people start to dislike each other's habits and that,

and you have to admit โ€’

Well, if I knew then what I know now, I'd have get my legs in a jog.

Who needs all them boys?

Your brothers, they never really got off to any kind of a start at all.

They still come to me for a ten.

Be careful.

He hasn't filed an income tax return in three years.

I'm afraid he'll lose his job.

Works the men under him too hard.

Nobody likes him.

It isn't that he's a cold or selfish man, but...

[thunder rumbling]

He turns people against him.

He offends them almost on purpose.

He's a good provider though.

He works hard.

I could get a job.

He doesn't want me to though.

I've thought about it.

I still know shorthand.

When I worked at Benedict's.

I can type a hundred words a minute.

[Jack] Right here!

Before we got married.

I don't know what I could do now...

with three boys.

You used to love science.

Wanted to meet free people.

[Mother] I thought I'd never marry.

And no one would love me.

I was wrong.

When those boys were born...

my life began.

Are you gonna leave us?

Why do you ask that?

I don't know.

Just 'cause.

[boys grunting]

[laughter]

- [shooting sounds] - [grunting]

- Whoa. - [man shouts]

- No! - [shouting]

[piano playing]

[grunts]

[youngest son] I love you.

[boys shouting]

Get him!

- [sprinkler whirring, hissing] - Get him!

[man] Oh-ho-ho!

You know you're like a brother to me.

I want to be square with you.

You can't rely on your friends to, but family...

You force them to love you whether they like it or not.

How long I been putting up with you, Ray?

How many years you been coming here, moochin' off my family?

Not lifting a hand to help out your sister you're so concerned about.

Hmm? Am I your servant?

I have great sympathy for your nervous condition.

I understand how hard it is for you to keep at a job.

Wife ran off, your trailer burned down.

And your poor mother, pulling them pots and pans from the ashes,

trying to shine 'em up.

You think you can pick up a big rock and impress my boys?

[grunts]

[fork scraping on plate]

Why was six upset?

Hmm?

'Cause seven ate nine.

[Mother sobs]

Ah!

Here.

Where's Dad?

He's gone on a trip.

[running footsteps]

Whoo!

- Whoo! - [door slamming]

[Mother laughing]

[squealing]

[no audible dialogue]

[squealing]

Get her! Get her!

Get her!

- [Mother] Help each other. - [screaming]

Do not slam that screen door!

Wait!

Love everyone.

Every leaf.

Every ray of light.

Forgive.

[faint] This is my house!

You're allowed to live here!

You're allowed to live here!

Get out of my way!

Shut up!

[train horn blows in distance]

[no audible dialogue]

[boy shouting] I got it, I got it, I got it!

[bird squawking]

[panting]

[glass clinking]

[clinking continues]

[ticking]

Do you have a lot of friends?

I know some guys.

[clattering]

Where's your daddy?

[man] Why don't you cut me a switch.

[switch whips]

Wouldn't that be nice?

Everything's made of candy, and we all get our way.

And everybody's just โ€’ everybody's just hoppin' around like frogs.

The whole world a frog pond.

[whines]

Grew up in this house with that dog. You didn't give him water.

[dog continues whining]

What stops your hands from turning into fins?

Think about it.

Nothin'.

[receiver hangs up]

Huh?

[lawn mower whirring]

- [dog barking in distance] - [wind chimes tinkling]

[wind gusting]

[wind chimes continue tinkling]

- [loud clattering, crashing] - [Mother] Boys, close the windows!

- [static] - [man's voice, muffled]

[thunderclaps]

[footsteps]

[screen door creaking]

[old man] Lord, it was just a-ridin' on Monday.

Just a-ridin'.

A-gettin' some and a-missin' some.

And Bud was just one of the ones.

There was a house picked up, took across the street.

Then picked up and took a mile down the road, and there wasn't a dish out of place.

How does it do it?

[old man] Rain just pourin'. One lady hid on the porch.

He hid in his car.

Raining so hard, he couldn't even see.

[old man continues talking, faint]

One car smashed, the next car wouldn't have a scratch.

Pitiful.

Downtown's gone.

114 dead.

[child shouts]

[dog barking]

Look out!

- Think he wants a kiss. - Mm-mmm.

Yeah?

[train horn blowing in distance]

- Boom, boom, boom! Boom, boom! - Boom, boom, boom!

- Watch out! - Watch out!

Go!

- [rattling] - [laughing]

- [rattling continues] - [shouting]

[barks]

- Yeah, we need rocks. We need rocks. - Here you go.

- Go get rocks! - [all shouting]

- Get a rock! - Stop! Stop, stop, stop.

- See if it'll go over this thing. - [laughing]

Ew!

Stop, stop. Don't, don't.

[screaming]

- Whoa! - Go! Come over here!

- He's gonna come โ€’ - Watch out, watch out!

No.

[laughing] Aaah!

Help me!

Help!

Oh!

- Whoa! - It's not ours.

- Yeah, that's not ours. - Who cares? You gonna tell?

You don't take something, you're not gonna get it.

Only stupid people get caught.

Think I'm stupid?

You afraid?

- One! - Two!

This radar says it's in your mouth.

Let me see.

Open your mouth.

[laughing]

Gonna save him for Dexter.

[barking]

- It won't let go till sunset. - Then let's get him.

Come here, Dexter. I got a surprise for you.

- Get him up. Get him up. - Get it on him.

- Right there. - Let's put it right on the end of his ear.

[whines]

It'd fit right there.

- Right there. - No.

[barking]

[clucks, chirping]

Hey, Steve!

I don't think they're home.

Who cares?

They belong to everybody.

[Jack whispers] No.

[shouting, chattering]

Come on. Let's do it.

[shouting]

[thumping]

[boys shouting]

I say let's bust it.

Yeah!

[laughing]

- That's a good one. - Yeah.

- Found a frog. - [laughing]

- Let's go set it off on a skyrocket. - He's getting away!

Get back! Get back!

Whoa!

[fireworks crackling]

Did it go to the moon?

[laughing]

Where is he?

Here he is.

It was an experiment!

[Jack whispering] Liar.

Never do it again.

Promise?

You gonna tell Dad?

[boy] They're just trying to scare you.

Keep you ignorant.

[boy whispering] Things you got to learn.

How can we know stuff till we look?

[clicks]

They say you can't try stuff?

They do.

What do you need to be afraid of?

You afraid.

I see it.

[boy] Right here! Right here!

- [car door shuts] - [car engine starts]

[wind chimes tinkling]

[door creaking]

[chirping]

[wings flapping]

[dog barking]

[laughing]

I can't talk to you.

[thunder rumbling]

Don't look at me. [sniffles]

[Jack whispering] What have I started?

What have I done?

Stick it in there.

I trust you.

Buzz!

- You tired? - [Jack] No!

I never get tired.

- Did this morning. - No, I was just pretending.

- Gonna call me a liar? - No.

I don't want to fight.

Afraid to?

No, I just don't wanna.

If I was to say you're scared, would you call me a liar?

No.

[Jack] Then you're scared, aren't you?

[laughing]

Ha-ha!

Quit it.

Forgive me?

[plays note]

[playing notes]

[plays note]

Take it back!

[man] What did you do?

Answer me.

Next word is "propel."

These are words we went over Tuesday, so I'm happy to see most of you getting them right.

[children shouting outside]

You can do better than what you've been doing.

Can you tell me something about Jupiter?

You seem afraid of something.

[teacher] He wouldn't even complete his painting.

He was afraid it might be wrong.

I told him it can't be wrong.

He's a good boy.

He just seems to lack confidence.

He doesn't seem to hear my instructions.

Stares.

Like on his Egypt report, he copped it right out of the World Book.

- He cheated? - He cheated.

He disrupts the entire class.

He cannot handle criticism.

We're constantly getting on him all the time.

[woman] I give you everything I got!

[teacher] When I was growing up in South Austin,

my dad wanted everything perfect.

If I didn't do it perfect, he'd wear my little butt out.

And I pretty much done that over the years with my athletes.

Not necessarily the students.

But that fear of that board on their little butt can do wonders.

What really surprised me, when I told him I was gonna have this conference with you,

he went totally pink.

I always do stupid things.

I want to be little again.

[whispering] "Coecha makeecha." The words.

[Jack] What words?

The words that'll stop people from being mean.

I'll never find it again.

Listen.

[whispering] I don't believe in that stuff anymore.

[Mother] Come here.

No!

I'm not gonna do everything you tell me to.

I'm gonna do what I want.

What do you know? You let him run all over you.

[Jack whispering] How do I get back...

where they are?

[car horn honking]

- How are you, Son? - Good.

This one's heavy. You're gonna need two hands for that one.

[Steve gasps] Look at this.

Careful now. You know what that โ€’ You know what โ€’

- Chinese? - That's Chinese.

That's very good. Yes, it is.

Your father went all around the world, all the way to China.

That's Pan Am airlines. That's what your father flew on.

The entire bathrooms are stainless steel, even the washbasin.

I feel confident the deal's going through.

If not, they can forget it. I'll tell them all to go to hell.

- That's from Germany. - How do you use them?

See that?

Put that down, Son.

Can Cayler come over?

Is your family not good enough for you?

[air blowing]

[buzzing]

[buzzing]

[Father] You know what I did when you were born?

I went out and I danced on the lawn.

Shot off my service revolver.

See you wasting your time staring out the window.

Where's that gonna get you?

I make sacrifices for you.

Honor those sacrifices by what you do.

- What? - Excuse me?

Excuse me, sir?

Say it. "Excuse me."

Excuse me.

- "Sir." - Sir.

Just listen, Son. You might actually learn something.

- Where's my brother? - That's not important right now, is it?

Okay.

You see this?

You know why I keep that?

It's the official seal of my own company.

The one I formed.

Till I got hepatitis from drinking unpasteurized beer in China.

Put the stick down, Son.

I protected you as best I can,

but I didn't get an education.

You will.

But I can redeem myself.

You're my freedom.

[Father] Is that what you're telling me?

Well, maybe you ought to get your ad straight.

You think? Boys!

You don't have to leave in a huff. You can โ€’

- Did you say something? Boys, let's go. - You don't have to leave in a huff.

I tell you what. If I had all the money in the world โ€’

I've heard about enough from clip artists like you.

[salesman] Relax.

[Jack] What?

Hope it's not going to take as long as last time.

Al dente.

Subjective point of view. You know the difference?

Subjective means it comes from your mind. Can't be proven by other people.

- Mmm. - [giggling]

Oop. [grunting]

[waitress laughing]

[laughs]

- Good to see you again. - Okay.

Let's go, boys.

Come on.

You afraid? Go out further.

[Jack] Is that a water moccasin?

You see a head, and that's all?

That's a turtle.

There are things you can't do. Well, there are things I can't do either.

You are not to call me Dad. You will call me Father.

- But โ€’ - Don't interrupt!

- But you did. - Don't interrupt!

It's your house. You can kick me out whenever you want to.

You'd like to kill me.

[piano playing ballad]

[no audible dialogue]

[angry chattering, faint]

Why was he born?

[piano playing continues]

[Jack whispering] Please, God, kill him.

Let him die.

Get him out of here.

She only loves me!

[man] Defend, O Lord, this, thy child, with thy heavenly grace,

that he may continue thine forever...

and daily increase in thy holy spirit more and more

until he come unto thy everlasting kingdom.

Amen.

[spokes clacking]

See somethin'.

[BB gun fires]

[gun cocks]

[BB gun fires]

[gun cocks]

[BB gun fires]

Put your finger over it.

Like that.

Come on.

- [BB gun fires] - [no audible dialogue]

[crying]

[crying continues]

[Jack whispering] What I want to do I can't do.

I do what I hate.

[fan turns off]

[kisses]

[kisses]

Here.

You can hit me if you want.

[Jack] I'm sorry.

You're my brother.

[Jack whispering] What is it you showed me?

I didn't know how to name you then...

but I see it was you.

Always you were calling me.

[no audible dialogue]

[Father] We never got to finish college, your mother and I.

But it's important to us that we get you the best education

we can possibly provide.

So we've decided that it's in your best interest

that we send you away to school.

Now, it's only a hundred miles away.

We'll still be able to see you on weekends and vacations.

I've talked to the people there. They know you're a good boy.

[Mother] I think this will be for the best.

You've been having such trouble with your father.

And with your classmates at school.

We haven't been good parents,

or you wouldn't be under all this tension.

We should have set a better example.

I will miss you very much.

[barking]

[Father] I wanted to be loved because I was great.

A big man.

I'm nothin'.

Look at the glory around us.

Trees and birds.

I lived in shame.

I dishonored it all and didn't notice the glory.

I'm a foolish man.

They're closing the plant.

They gave me a choice.

No job...

or transfer to a job nobody wants.

[Jack whispering] Father.

[Father] I never missed a day of work.

[Jack] Mother.

[Father] I tithed every Sunday.

[Jack] Always you wrestle inside me.

Always you will.

[Father] You know, Jack, all I ever wanted for you was...

to make you strong and...

grow up and be your own boss.

Maybe I've been tough on you.

I'm not proud of that.

I'm as bad as you are.

I'm more like you than her.

You boys are about all I've done in life. Otherwise I've drawn a zilch.

You're all I have. You're all I wanna have.

My sweet boy.

[sniffling]

[sniffles]

[spits]

[Steve sobbing]

[thunder rumbling]

You just gonna stand there like a bump on a log?

Go on.

[soundtrack: choir singing classical music]

[choir continues singing]

[Mother] The only way to be happy is to love.

Unless you love...

your life will flash by.

Do good to them.

Wonder.

Hope.

[elevator beeping]

[beeping fades]

[older Jack whispering] Brother.

[rumbling]

Keep us.

Guide us...

till the end of time.

[young Jack] Follow me.

[soundtrack: choir singing classical music]

[choir continues singing]

[choir music swelling]

[choir music swelling]

[choir] โ™ช Amen โ™ช

โ™ช Amen โ™ช

- โ™ช Amen โ™ช - [no audible dialogue]

[Mother] I give you my son.

โ™ช Amen โ™ช

โ™ช Amen โ™ช

โ™ช Amen โ™ช

[beeping]

[traffic noises]

[wind blowing gently]

[waves cresting]

[seagull squawking]

[bird chirping]

[animals, insects chirping]

[waves continue cresting]

[animal, bird sounds continue]

[birds continue chirping]

[wind blowing gently]
