That would commit this
type of heinous crime?

Of thriving industries such
as tech, aviation, and media.

And while these professionals
make their fortunes

In the big city,

Many settle down in tiny
hamlets just outside of town,

Like sharpsburg.

- Sharpsburg is a really
popular area for the people

Who come to atlanta for
different executive jobs.

We have a lot of large
corporate companies, amazon,

Coca-cola, delta.

- It's primarily
professionals, doctors,

Lawyers, executives,
and a lot of

Those professionals value
having their suburban lifestyle

That's quiet compared
to the hustle

And bustle of downtown atlanta.

- [narrator] but on the day
after valentine's day, 2009,

This quaint haven of just
350 people would descend

From heartwarming holiday
into bone-chilling tragedy

With a frantic 911 call.

- On Sunday,
February 15th, 2009,

911 received a phone call
from a gentleman stating

That he had come home and
found his wife unresponsive

In the house.

[siren blaring]

- Our deputies were
the first to respond

To the 911 call.

- When you first enter the home,

It's a little eerie, just
looks like a normal home,

But you don't make it
very far into this home

Before you find the office
where she was found.

- First person they
encounter is alec mcnaughton.

- [narrator] 60-year-old alec
mcnaughton, the homeowner

And 911 caller, sits
on the floor next

To his wife, cathy mcnaughton.

[tense music]

- The deputies saw a really
bloody, violent crime scene.

There was no hope of
helping mrs. Mcnaughton.

She was already
clearly deceased.

- When the deputies realized
that there was definite signs

Of foul play,

They did call the criminal
investigations team

And they responded.

- Alec mcnaughton
was very cooperative.

Of course, we wanna
speak with him

To learn about his wife,
who might have hurt her.

mcnaughton is taken

To headquarters while detectives
begin their investigation.

- There was cast off,

Which is blood spatter
slung across the wall.

You could see that it
was a brutal attack.

- The medical examiner counted
31 distinct stab wounds

On cathy's body.

- Cathy had stab
wounds to her back.

She had also had stab
wounds to the front.

We determined that she was
sitting at her desk working

When she was attacked
from the rear.

She turns, and then she was
attacked from the front.

- [narrator] the team
ascertains from the state

Of cathy's body that she's
been dead for eight hours.

- We're thinking she's
murdered around noon

Or shortly thereafter.

- Cathy had defensive wounds.

So this must have been an
obviously terrifying few moments

Before she was deceased.

- A knife makes it
personal, meaning

That cathy was probably
involved with a killer due

To the fact that
it was overkill.

An intruder would not stab an
individual that many times.

This type of crime
in sharpsburg,

Georgia is unusual and
is not very common.

- Whoever perpetrated this
crime was someone filled

With rage.

And that rage was taken out
on cathy mcnaughton that day.

Clearly, this was evil embodied.

- These crimes
affect us as humans.

You know, there's just a human

Behind all these
uniforms and badges.

So now we're gonna be
looking for any weapon

That could have been
used in the murder.

I was helping take dna
samples from blood,

Like the blood splatter,

And then samples from
different areas to see is all

Of the blood present
from one person.

- We didn't know if all of
that blood was cathy's, if some

Of that was the perpetrator's.

- [narrator] the team finds
no obvious murder weapon near

The body, but they collect
several kitchen knives

For testing, then
fan out to search

The rest of the mcnaughton home.

- The back door had
been left unlocked,

But there was no forced entry.

- There were valuables
in this home.

She had a very sporty red volvo

That was still
sitting in the garage.

They had a vintage pickup truck

That was still in the driveway.

Cathy mcnaughton was
still wearing her gold

And diamond jewelry.

So at this point,
it didn't appear

That robbery was the motive.

- The scene of the crime
was basically isolated

To the office where
cathy was working.

- [narrator] after finding no
obvious evidence left behind

By the killer, the team fans
out and speaks with neighbors.

[tense music]

- You're just looking for
anything out of the ordinary

That somebody might have
seen that afternoon.

- It's a nice, quiet area where
people keep to themselves.

So it's not unusual that they
might not have seen anything

Because the homes are
kind of spaced out.

- The investigators receive
different information,

But not anything pertinent
the night of the incident.

detectives desperately try

To track down leads in
this senseless killing,

News of cathy's murder spreads

Through the tiny atlanta suburb.

- I heard that she
had been killed.

I was sick to my stomach.

I couldn't...

I couldn't believe
it. I was in shock.

I didn't believe it.
I just didn't want to.

Cathy made everyone laugh.

She lit up the room.

She shined.

She had a beautiful spirit.

Everyone knew it. Everyone.

It's unfair, what happened.

It was very unfair.

She didn't deserve that.

She didn't.

two adult daughters were

prominent lawyer

two, alec mcnaughton.

Cathy immediately
became smitten.

- Cathy learned after
meeting alec online,

An online dating site,

That alec mcnaughton
had a prestigious career

As a top attorney in oklahoma.

His law partner
actually represented

The oklahoma bomber,
timothy mcveigh.

- Alec really cared for cathy.

Cathy felt like alec was the guy

Because they had
a blast together.

They were having
the best time ever.

She seemed extremely happy.

- They dated only
about six months,

And then they got
married pretty quickly.

time of cathy's murder,

She and alec had been married
for four and a half years.

- Who would be
the type of person

That would come
in sometime midday

And commit this type
of heinous crime?

- Who knew cathy?

Who would she let into the home?

She wouldn't be alarmed
by them being in the home,

And obviously, one
of the first people

Was alec mcnaughton himself.

- [narrator] investigators
sit down with alec mcnaughton

To see what he might know
about his wife's murder.

- Of course, we
were going to learn

What we can about the victim

And their spouse, their
family, who's close to them.

What are those
relationships like?

- The first person you have
to rule out is the husband,

The person that's
closest to her.

- Many times when a
spouse is murdered,

It is usually the other
spouse that was involved.

[dramatic music]

- Cathy's ex-husband
flew into town

The weekend of the murder.

- During the interview, we
noticed a cut on his hand.

If someone is stabbing
someone, their hands can slip

And be cut on the knife.

- Investigators found
papers and writings.

It's clear from cathy's own
hand, she's been threatened.

- Cathy's almost
speaking from the grave.

- [narrator] the coweta county
homicide team is speaking

With alec mcnaughton,

Who discovered the brutally
stabbed body of his wife, cathy,

In their suburban atlanta home.

- Mr. Mcnaughton,
from the beginning,

Was cooperative with police.

He freely talked about
what happened that day,

And he said he wanted
to find the person

Who had committed this crime.

- So when we began talking
with alec mcnaughton,

Of course, we are gonna
ask him where he was.

- Alec told us cathy
was working from home

And he went to sandy springs

Or north atlanta to spend
the day with his mother.

- From sharpsburg
to sandy springs,

It's probably around a 45
minute ride, about 50 miles.

- He took his mother
for a barbecue lunch

And he called his wife

And told her that he was gonna
bring her some barbecue home

And he was checking to make
sure that she was okay.

- Alec said he arrived
home around 7:30

To find his wife on the
floor, covered in blood

With apparent stab wounds.

- Alec was, matter of
fact, he did not cry.

He did not seem to be a
very emotional person,

And basically told
about their day.

- He said he went to
atlanta to see his mom.

So we did follow
up on that to see

What his mother had to say.

She told us he had been
up there for a visit

And that they had gone to
eat, so it checked out.

- His mother says, this
is an innocent man trying

To find out who could have
done this to his wife.

- [narrator] the
team also recovers

The message alec left for
cathy on their home phone.

- [narrator] with alec's
alibi checking out,

Police release him

And begin looking into
cathy's life to see

Who might have a
motive to kill her.

[intense music]

- She had been stabbed 30 times.

That many stab wounds suggest

To authorities a
crime of passion.

And so, authorities are
looking not just for someone

Who knows cathy,

But someone who has a close
personal relationship with her,

And they may have some
reason to be upset with her.

- [narrator] investigators
reach out to cathy's friends

And family to get a sense of
who might commit such a brutal

And personal crime against her.

- We start interviewing
family members.

We interviewed
her two daughters.

We talked to her
previous coworkers

Before she had retired.

We interviewed friends.

- When police were speaking
with family members,

They spoke about gary
mendenhall, cathy's ex-husband.

So that piqued their interest.

- [narrator] cathy and gary,

Who also worked in
the aviation industry,

Had been married for 21 years.

- He had long since
been divorced from cathy

And lived in another state.

With an ex-husband, you don't
know what their feelings are,

If they still have some
connection to the person

Or want to have a
connection with the person.

- [narrator] detectives
ask cathy's loved ones

About mendenhall,

And while nobody recalls
any violent episodes,

Cathy's daughter
remembers a striking fact

About her parents.

- Cathy and gary mendenhall's
wedding anniversary

Was valentine's day, and cathy
was stabbed to death the day

After valentine's day.

- [narrator] but the
wedding anniversary isn't

The only coincidence the team
learns from cathy's daughter.

- Gary mendenhall was in
town the day of the murder.

That alone makes him a suspect

Because he still had some
connection to cathy mcnaughton.

- He flew into town the
weekend of the murder.

Their wedding anniversary
was valentine's day,

So they were really suspicious.

They're wondering, is he
disgruntled about this

And flew into town for the
purpose of killing her?

[tense music]

- [narrator] investigators
track down mendenhall,

Who is still in town, and
bring him in for questioning.

- Investigators
wanted to find out,

What's your current relationship
with cathy mcnaughton?

Do you have any romantic
interest still in her?

Do you have a reason that
you would be upset with her,

That you might want
to do harm to her?

- [narrator] but the date
of cathy's murder isn't

The only red flag that jumps
out at the detectives.

- During the
interview with gary,

We noticed a cut on his hand.

- A suspect who's engaged in
a crime of stabbing like this,

They're holding the knife,
it's bloody, it's messy.

It's not uncommon for someone
to be cut in that process

Beyond just the victim,
that being the perpetrator.

- Could this have been a wound

That he'd received while
possibly attacking cathy?

detectives investigating

The brutal stabbing death
of a beloved mother of two,

Cathy mcnaughton, in her
suburban atlanta home,

Have just discovered

That her ex-husband has a
suspicious cut on his hand.

- If someone has a knife

And they're stabbing someone,
their hands could slip

And could be cut on the knife

Or it could be a
possible defensive wound.

- He said that he was helping

To clean out his daughter's
house, and that's what happened.

- No one knew, myself or the
investigators, on whether or not

Gary mendenhall was
telling the truth.

- He flew into town the
weekend that she was killed.

He has a cut on his hand and
he didn't have a good alibi.

So gary mendenhall, at
this point, is pretty high

On the police suspect list.

- Mr. Mendenhall explained
his whereabouts that day

And said he hadn't
seen cathy mcnaughton.

He had landed on
that particular day

And he was intending
to see his daughter

Who also lived in the atlanta
area, cathy's daughter.

Would it be possible for
him to fly into atlanta

And get to the home of
sharpsburg, commit the crime,

And then go and have
dinner with his daughter?

- [narrator] since cathy
mcnaughton was killed

Between noon and 2:30 pm,

The team must scrutinize the
timeline to determine whether

Or not gary mendenhall
could have killed cathy

In that window.

- The investigators
got records that showed

That gary mendenhall had flown
in approximately 3:15 that day.

He rented a car and
went to his hotel.

We got records associated
with those things.

- The fact that he
was on an airplane

And couldn't have been there,
eliminated him totally.

[tense music]

- [narrator] with
the elimination

Of cathy's ex-husband,

Police are back at square one.

[somber music]

Now, five days into
the investigation,

As the team continues
their search for leads,

Cathy mcnaughton's daughters
and extended family

Gather to lay her to rest.

- There were tons
of people there.

Cathy was so loved.

People came from everywhere.

A lot of 'em were delta people.

I was crying, fell to my knees,

And I looked at her

And she was no longer there.

Her spirit, her
bubbly personality,

That wasn't her anymore.

That was just a shell.

She wasn't there anymore.

- This is somebody's mother.

This is somebody's wife,
somebody's daughter.

- She was a wonderful mom.

I mean, you can't even express

How she loved her kids.

- [narrator] shortly
after cathy's service,

Investigators get word that
forensic results are in

From the crime scene.

- The killer was very careful.

There were no fingerprints
other than those belonging

To the victim and
her husband, alec.

- Of course, his
fingerprints would be there.

He lived in this house

And we could find 1,000
of his fingerprints

And it wouldn't
tell us anything.

- The crime scene specialist
took blood samples

Where cathy's body
was discovered.

- The forensic analysis
of the crime scene told us

All of that blood was cathy's.

- [narrator] when tests reveal

That none of the knives
recovered from the scene

Have dna evidence tying
them to the murder,

The search for the
murder weapon continues.

- This is one of those cases
that we didn't have a ton

Of forensic evidence.

- What this case became about
was, who had the motive?

Who had the
opportunity, the means

At the time cathy
mcnaughton died?

- [narrator] with no indicting
forensics or viable suspects,

Investigators are
at a standstill.

So they turn to the
media for help.

- We'd asked the local
news to put this story out,

And we were asking
for any leads.

Anybody that knew any
information to come forward.

- [narrator] tips start
pouring in the same day.

And one of them from a
former delta coworker

Of cathy's piques
investigators' interest.

- A gentleman named
jerome langford

Called the sheriff's office.

He was an acquaintance, a
friend of cathy mcnaughton's,

Had recently had an
encounter with her.

- They had worked in
the same department

At delta's atlanta
headquarters for two years

During which they
had become friends.

Jerome said that he met with
cathy mcnaughton about 10 days

Before she was murdered.

- During their encounter,
which was a little odd,

Cathy told him that she was
planning on leaving alec.

Mr. Langford's
statement stood out

Because mcnaughton,
alec, was telling us

How wonderful their
relationship was,

And they were so in love
and everything's so perfect.

- And so, at this point,

Police saw that as
a possible motive.

So they're wondering,
"can we believe anything

That he says?"

- This disposable camera had
a number of pictures on it

That had never been developed.

It was startling.

She had been bruised and beaten.

- He appeared to be
cold, calculated,

Manipulative, and a narcissist.

- I was terrified of him.

He is a psychopath, no doubt.

The brutal murder

Of former delta airlines
employee cathy mcnaughton,

Who was stabbed to death in
her suburban atlanta home,

Received a tip from a friend
of cathy's who saw her shortly

Before she was killed.

- They met at the airport
in atlanta at a food court,

And they had a conversation.

- She begins to
talk about the fact

That she's having
problems in her marriage.

- She had made the
comment to mr. Langford

That she's going
to divorce alec.

Cathy had told mr. Langford

That she had refinanced
her house to pay off most

Of alec's debt.

- We learned that there
was a deep financial strain

And cathy was tired of
supporting both her and alec,

But she wasn't gonna give
him another red dime.

In question, detectives
conduct a deeper dive

Into his background.

They succeed in tracking
down his ex-wife, susan knox,

And she drops a bombshell.

- Alec's ex-wife
told investigators

He had been violent with her

And abusive with
her in the past.

- Mr. Mcnaughton and
ms. Knox had a daughter

And there was some
kind of fight.

And in that fight,

Mr. Mcnaughton pulled
out a shotgun.

And threatened to kill
them and kill himself.

He had cut the phone lines.

- Now, we're finding
out that he threatened

To kill in his past.

So these patterns of
behavior start speaking

To the character of the
people you're dealing with.

- [narrator] investigators
reach out to police in oklahoma

For the incident report
and they discover

A chilling 911 call
made by alec's daughter

On her cell phone.

- A person who would
threaten to kill their wife

And child has anger issues

And would be capable
of doing anything.

- [narrator] shocked by
news of alec's violent past,

Detectives reach
out to his siblings

To get a fuller picture of
the supposed grieving widower.

Investigators learn that
alec was often tasked

With babysitting his sisters.

- Alec was in charge

And that's when the severe,
regular, daily torture

And abuse began on myself
and my siblings every day.

- He would threaten
us. He would hit us.

He would lock us in bathrooms
and not let us come out.

Alec had many a times of
choking me until I blacked out

And then would let me fall
downstairs unconscious.

And he thought that was a
really funny little thing to do.

Alec would walk back

And forth in front
of us with a belt.

[imitating belt popping]

Would pop that belt and say,

"remember, if you say a word,

If you thought today was bad,
tomorrow's gonna be worse."

[intense music]

So we never told.

- [narrator] alec's siblings
tell police they kept

The violence they
suffered a family secret.

But it didn't end with them.

- Alec has been
married four times.

Alec had beaten his first
wife a number of times,

And finally, when he cut her
with a broken coke bottle,

That's when she was like,
"okay, it's time for me

To save myself and get out.

Alec threw the second
wife into a glass table,

And then, of course, alec's
third wife divorced him

When he tried to shoot
her with the shotgun.

When I heard that cathy
had been murdered,

I knew immediately
alec had done it

From all the near deaths
that I had in his hands.

I know he did it.

- I remember thinking,
he finally did it.

I was not surprised,
I was not shocked.

Alec, my brother,
is a psychopath.

No doubt.

- Once we interviewed
family members of alec,

It narrowed it down that
alec was a violent person.

- I think only an evil man
could do that kind of thing

To his other wives
and the family too.

- I personally think
someone who had threatened

To kill their wife or kid is
capable of this type of murder.

That is when we focus more

Of our investigation
towards alec.

- [narrator] with these
disturbing revelations,

Police begin looking
into alec's finances.

Alec's family says that
by the time he moved back

To atlanta, he was broke.

- Alec was extremely in debt.

- Cathy did not know that

Before they were married, that
alec had lost everything.

Alec was a conman.

- Cathy was somewhat
financially secure

And there was a possibility
that he had married her just

For her financial resources.

- I just feel like I could
have tried to warn her more,

But I was terrified of him.

I have always been terrified
of him for good reason.

- Everything started
pointing to alec,

But alec's mom confirmed that
they had met in sandy springs.

So according to her,
alec's alibi fit.

- It's a pretty strong alibi

Because he couldn't have been
in two places at one time

And they're not able to tie him

With physical
evidence to the scene.

team gets a warrant

For alec's cell phone records,

But it will take days
before they come in.

With alec now staying with
his mother in sandy springs,

Completely out of touch with
police, detectives return

To the mcnaughton home
to look for anything

That can shed light
on cathy's murder.

- The investigators did a
couple of searches of the house.

In her closet, they found
papers and writings

That were in cathy's own
hand that changed the case.

- We saw cathy's,
in her own words,

That alec had
threatened to kill her.

- In those notes, cathy's
almost speaking from the grave.

Just outside atlanta are
searching the personal files

Of cathy mcnaughton,
in the suburban home

Where she was savagely
stabbed to death,

And they've just made
a stunning discovery.

- Cathy had, on just a random
sheet of paper, written,

So it's clear from
cathy's own hand,

Things are not great.

She's been threatened

And mr. Mcnaughton is
a very violent man.

far from the papers

Documenting alec's abuse, the
team discovers a small camera.

- This disposable camera had
a number of pictures on it.

They had never been developed.

- [narrator] investigators
process the film

And uncover some
disturbing photos.

- It was startling.

It was cathy mcnaughton

And she had been
bruised and beaten,

And she'd saved that
camera not knowing

That it would become
critical evidence

In the case of her own murder.

- During the course
of this investigation,

Our focus was
turning towards alec,

But alec's mom confirmed that
they had met in sandy springs.

So according to her,
alec's alibi fit.

- We know that at 2:33,

Mr. Mcnaughton makes
a phone call reporting

That he's on the
northside of atlanta,

40 miles away, getting barbecue.

- The voicemail, where was
he when that call originated?

Well, the cell phone
records should tell us.

then get word

That alec's cell
phone records are in.

The location data reveals
where he was when he left

The message for cathy.

- Mr. Mcnaughton's
cellular records show

That call originated
on tower 309,

A couple miles from
his home in sharpsburg

Where cathy
mcnaughton was found,

Not 40 miles away
in sandy springs.

- Those phone records tied
him back to the crime scene.

It put him close to his home

When he told us
he was not there.

- [narrator] and since police
estimate cathy was killed

Between noon and 2:30 pm, alec's
phone puts him at his home

Just after cathy was murdered.

- We'd learned that alec had
made numerous false statements.

We had photographs
of cathy beaten,

And now the phone records.

- The evidence all
pointed to one place,

That alec mcnaughton
killed his wife.

- [narrator] investigators
formulate a theory as to how

And why alec so brutally
took cathy's life.

- We felt that she might
have told alec they were

About to get divorced.

She was in her office,
working at her computer.

We feel that alec
came in on her.

She would not have
been surprised

Because he was already there.

- Investigators theorized
that alec began stabbing her

Based on the stab wounds

And the way the chair
was flipped over,

And the fact that she was
stabbed multiple times

In an overkill fashion.

- He formulated a plan,
put that plan into action,

And then thought, "I
know, I'll call 911

And I'll tell them
I found my wife."

That's evil.

- [narrator] with
alec's alibi busted,

Detectives bring him back in

For questioning, this time,
as their prime suspect.

- The problem with mr.
Mcnaughton is he thought he

Was smarter than everybody else.

He thought he could talk
his way out of this.

So his explanation was simply,
"the records are wrong.

The records themselves
were lying."

- He thought that he
could sell a story

That the evidence contradicted.

- While we were speaking,
alec appeared to be cold,

Calculated, manipulative,
and a narcissist.

incriminating evidence

Has convinced coweta
county authorities

That alec mcnaughton
murdered his wife, cathy.

- On February 27th, 2009,

Alec mcnaughton is
placed under arrest

For the murder of
cathy mcnaughton.

- When police arrested
alec mcnaughton two weeks

After cathy's murder,
it was a shock

For cathy's two daughters,
but also a relief to know

That her killer would
be facing a jury.

- I felt relief when
alec was arrested.

I just felt like, you know,
justice was gonna be served.

I didn't even know that
he was hitting her.

She never told me that, ever.

I don't know why
she didn't speak up.

Honest to god, I don't know why.

- When he was arrested,
my mother said, "oh,

He could never do that.

He didn't, I don't believe
that. I don't believe that."

And I said, "mom, I
feel like he did it.

For me, there was no shock,
there was no surprise.

I knew he was guilty.

- [narrator] 18 months after
the murder of cathy mcnaughton,

Alec mcnaughton stands trial.

- It was a circumstantial
case, which is not as easy

As a case that you have
a bunch of eyewitnesses

Or you have dna putting the
person as the perpetrator.

- [narrator] with no
forensic evidence tying alec

To the crime scene,
prosecutors turn

To his own family to establish
his pattern of violence.

- I testified
against my brother,

Whom I had been afraid of,
terrified of my whole life,

Because I knew beyond
a shadow of a doubt

That he had done that to cathy.

I knew it in my gut, in my soul.

the prosecution rests,

Alec mcnaughton's attorneys
turns the courtroom

When he calls alec to the stand.

- The jury was in
high anticipation

Of what he would say.

- I did no such
thing. That's a lie.

- When mr. Mcnaughton
testified, he said

Everybody but mr.
Mcnaughton was lying.

Not only was it the
investigators were lying,

The ex-wives were lying.

The records themselves were
lying, it was all wrong.

According to mr. Mcnaughton.

- If alec had gotten
out for any reason,

I was gonna get in my
car, call my husband,

Leave everything, and disappear

'cause alec threatened both
of us that he would kill us,

That there was
nowhere we could go.

- If alec was free, I was
afraid he'd come try to kill me.

I would get a
concealed carry gun.

That's how afraid I was of him.

concerns of more violence

If he is set free,
the stakes are set.

And on August 10th, 2010,

Alec mcnaughton's jury
reveals his fate.

- The jury does not
buy alec's defense.

They find him guilty
on two counts of murder

And one count of
aggravated assault.

[tense music]

- Mr. Mcnaughton was sentenced

To life without the
possibility of parole.

- When he was convicted,

There was just this
unbelievable feeling.

And you know, I cried

Because what happened
to cathy was wrong.

It never should have
happened, but it did.

- [narrator] cathy's
loved ones hope

That her tragic
killing can serve

As a cautionary tale for other
victims of domestic abuse.

- By my telling my story,

My hope is that it will
encourage other people

That might be living the same
situation to come forward

And let others know.

- I have felt guilty.

I should have warned cathy.

The only reason I can
think of is it was

So ingrained in
me from childhood,

I was terrified of him.

A lot of women think, well,
that couldn't happen to me.

Well, I'm here to tell you
that it can and it does happen.

- Remember what
happened to cathy.

If you're being
abused, tell somebody.

I know for a fact that's
what she would want.

She had the most
beautiful spirit.

I loved her from the
bottom of my heart,

Cathy's life lives on
through her daughters.

They're making her
spirit live on,

Even though she's gone.

You know, her glow, her
happiness, her joy.
