- But he was smart enough to wear

a mask when he dumped him.

- And then it's up to homicide detectives

to track the suspects down...

- Where he was.

- And get them off the street.

It's a hot night on Bourbon Street.

Suddenly...

[gunshots banging]

Shots erupt.

narrator: Patrol spots two suspicious men

fleeing the scene.

[siren blaring]

[tense music]

- The French Quarter,

that's the bread and butter for the city.

Mass shooting, multiple victims,

once-in-a-lifetime type of case.

♪ ♪

- In one way or another, everybody inevitably

runs from a homicide.

They don't want to be apprehended and sent to prison.

There's a lot of pressure on the detective when handling

a case like this, because in a well-known location

like Bourbon Street, it's a travel destination.

So with all of that, the detective that

gets that case feels that pressure that

I have to be able to bring closure to this case.

And the whole world is watching me.

[dramatic music]

- We got a large scene spanning about a block.

narrator: Brueggeman meets with Eighth District

Detective Mike Flores.

Until there's a confirmed homicide,

Flores will be leading the case.

- Did you actually see that one already?

- No, I got the play-by-play.

...but a lot of casings.

[flash clicking]

We got around 12 shots fired.

They were just shooting into the crowd.

♪ ♪

We have so much video in this block.

There's a good chance I'm gonna get the guy running.

I should get a good face shot.

- Once all the businesses start opening up,

I'm gonna jump right on that.

- All we need is one good picture,

and it'll be a massive manhunt statewide.

[dramatic music]

- Breaking news out of the French Quarter.

Seven people were injured in an early morning

shooting on Bourbon Street.

narrator: As reports of the shooting

start to hit the morning news,

pressure for answers floods the department.

- There's nine people shot, two critical.

- It could have been so much worse.

narrator: Just back from the hospital,

Detective Thomas Perez debriefs the team.

narrator: 21-year-old Brittany Thomas,

known to her family as "Brit Brit,"

was out celebrating her upcoming graduation

from nursing school.

It was her lifelong dream to become a pediatric nurse.

- The first thing I'm gonna do is

to get some other guys on him.

Yeah, I'm gonna start canvassing

the area for some video.

That's gonna be a major task.

[upbeat music]

- Yeah, we're going to knock it out.

- Thank you. - Yes, sir.

[suspenseful music]

- Let it play out and then go back to it.

- Jeez.

- Wow. - That is just crazy.

- I can't believe a shooting of this capacity

happened on Bourbon.

Let's go through it again play-by-play.

[tense music]

- Our shooter is a Black male.

All right, so that's him right there.

♪ ♪

- He goes into this group over here.

♪ ♪

- Go back a little bit.

narrator: The man appears to confront the group

standing on the corner.

And one of the men from the group pushes back.

- So now our shooter is backing away.

♪ ♪

[gunshots banging]

[people screaming]

You hear the gunfire.

- Those shots now, I don't see a muzzle flash from him.

♪ ♪

He's raising the gun now. - Yeah, OK.

- But look where he's shooting.

- It has a muzzle function.

- So one of the guys from this group initiated the shoot-out.

- Does it look like the guy in the red

is reaching down for something?

- Yeah.

♪ ♪

- So we have two shooters.

We can hear in the video,

the guy in the red shirt shoot first.

And then we can see the muzzle flash from the Black male.

- The quality is not good enough to be

able to identify the shooters.

♪ ♪

- That group was here.

narrator: The video shows the man wearing the backpack

fled with the shooter in the red shirt

while the Black male continued firing.

♪ ♪

- Hold on. I think we got something.

narrator: Cameras along an adjacent street capture

the man with the backpack.

- That's a great shot of him.

Now, wait a minute.

This is Ginger.

narrator: Detective Thomas Perez recognizes

one of the men in the group

as a victim he nicknamed "Ginger" at the hospital.

♪ ♪

narrator: The victim was originally standing

right beside the shooter in red

before he was hit.

- When I interviewed him at the hospital,

he claimed he knew nothing.

- We know from watching this video,

he's in this group of people, doing something.

- We need to talk to him.

[dramatic music]

narrator: The victim, referred to as "Ginger,"

is brought to Homicide.

♪ ♪

- Let's see what he says.

There's a difference between being a victim

and being involved.

He's got to demonstrate to us what the deal is.

- OK. - All right?

- We'll get you out of here as quickly as possible.

What were you doing out there that night?

- Who were you with?

narrator: He gives the names of three friends,

two men and a woman.

- We know that's bull-[bleep] that

he's just standing there minding his own business

when he gets shot.

[tense music]

It clearly demonstrates that he was

hanging out with the shooter prior

to the shooter opening fire.

♪ ♪

- Who is that guy right there?

- Who's the red shirt?

- The guy's got his hands on you, man.

He's right next to you when he reaches

down and pulls the gun out.

- I know, but listen to me when I tell you this.

Those things aren't gonna cut it.

You were standing next to the dude that pulls out a gun.

He's hanging with y'all.

- No. - No.

- He wasn't.

He was standing in the group!

- Show us-- - Come on, man.

- At this point, the game changes.

This is first-degree murder.

- You can't get yourself out of it.

♪ ♪

- That's our guy? - Mm-hmm.

- Good deal.

narrator: Flores finds a photo on Ginger's Facebook account

that resembles the man in the backpack.

- We'll confront him with this and see what he has to say.

- Who is this, in the picture with you?

- Was this guy out there that night?

- And you positive?

♪ ♪

- So who is this right here?

♪ ♪

♪ ♪

- I can pick you out in a video,

and I've only known you for a couple of hours now.

- [breathes heavily]

It looks like my man.

- OK.

Thank you, brother.

narrator: Armed with a name, detectives find

the last known addresses of the man with the backpack.

- All right, he's wanted.

He's got a warrant.

- All right. He's not the shooter.

But he was standing next to the shooter.

He was with the shooter. And we've been putting--

narrator: Sergeant Nicholas Gernon mobilizes

the Gang Squad to track him down.

[dramatic music]

The man with the backpack is nowhere to be found.

But they get a break.

- Our guys have been out pounding the ground all night,

knocking on doors.

When they knocked on this one door, this kid answered,

claims that he knows who the shooter is.

- Tell me what happened.

- I spoke to him last night.

narrator: The witness says he's a friend of the man

detectives refer to as "Ginger."

Just the four of them and he said there was--

narrator: Ginger told him that their other friend,

the man wearing the backpack in the video,

was allegedly selling drugs in the hours before the shooting.

Supposedly he got on the phone...

narrator: Ginger said the guy with the backpack

immediately called their friend, Joe, for help.

narrator: Ginger claimed the guy with the backpack

gave Joe a signal.

[dramatic music]

- There he is, Trung Le.

narrator: 20-year-old Trung Le, AKA Joe,

has no prior felony convictions.

♪ ♪

- Some good developments, man.

- I just need somebody to place him on the scene,

say he was there, and he was there shooting.

- Hey, Lauzon. How are you?

narrator: Sergeant Gernon calls on the Gang Squad

to start rounding up the other two men

that Ginger claimed were with him the night of the murder.

- Thank you, man.

Bye.

[phone rings] - Oh, [bleep].

- Lauzon, you got him in custody?

All right, great. We're up here.

- I think you know why you're here, huh?

- I mean, there's no reason to lie,

no reason to bull-[bleep].

This is first-degree murder.

narrator: The witness says he was not on the scene

when the shooting occurred.

But he heard what happened through Ginger.

- OK.

- Let me ask you this.

If you looked at the video right here,

could you point him out on the video?

narrator: With the witness's positive ID,

detectives finally have enough for a warrant.

The team heads out to take Joe into custody.

So just a little background on this guy.

Apparently, in his crew, he's the muscle.

So he might look like he's a little [bleep],

But you know, they thought that

he was enough to come out there.

That's what we're looking at.

- All right, we're rolling.

- Sheriff!

Search warrant!

- I almost bet he knows by now.

More than likely, he's probably gonna go into hiding.

- In this particular case, I think the chances of getting

outside resources are big.

You might even get some help from a federal agency.

The U.S. Marshals are federal agents

that have the jurisdiction to go across state lines.

I've used them on numerous occasions.

Just a great resource to local law enforcement.

So the chances of him just disappearing into thin air

are not great.

- I'm pleased to announce that within the last 15 minutes,

Trung T. Le, also known as Joe,

was taken into custody in a town in Mississippi.

[dramatic music]

I'm Detective Brueggeman,

New Orleans Police Department, Homicide Unit.

If you don't want to talk to us, I'm gonna leave.

- The interview is now complete.

- It's always good to get someone

to incriminate themselves, to make an admission, confess.

But we've got a pretty good case.

I feel we'll get the second shooter identified.

It's gonna take some work.

Anyone that will shoot into a crowd like that

needs to be taken off the street

and put away for good.

- The number-one goal in a homicide

is to find the person responsible,

and to apprehend them, and bring them to justice.

Any case that goes outside of your jurisdiction

becomes increasingly difficult to solve.

A lot of complexities become involved when a person

goes to a foreign country.

Not all countries will extradite somebody

back to the United States.

It's extremely frustrating.

narrator: 10:00 AM.

A woman hears cries for help outside her house.

She looks out her window

and sees a man covered in blood.

[siren blaring]

Police rush to the scene,

but the man is dead.

- We've been up since

2:00 this morning.

And we were already working on one case

when this one comes in.

The way I figure it, sleep's overrated, anyway.

[dramatic music]

[dog barks]

narrator: The victim lies in an alley

behind a row of houses.

♪ ♪

- In here.

- Kind of take a little peek in here.

Chest, arm.

I mean, they just stabbed him every which way but Sunday.

♪ ♪

- Nothing in any of his pockets, right?

We don't know who he is.

We don't know where he's from.

We don't know anything about him.

♪ ♪

narrator: Detectives get a lead.

- A neighbor was in her backyard.

She's the one that called 911. - OK.

narrator: The neighbor said she saw a red truck

leaving the crime scene.

♪ ♪

- One of these are their tire prints.

[shutter clicks]

Just see if there's anybody in the house

who's right across from where the blood is.

- Yeah, there is.

- See if they might have seen or heard something.

Do you know the guy's name?

narrator: The man says one of his former coworkers

drove a red truck.

♪ ♪

His name was Arturo Mata.

- They both got a ticket on their vehicles.

- So-- - The guy was given a ticket?

narrator: The man says he and Arturo got parking tickets

on the same day, which could help

detectives track Arturo down.

[dramatic music]

♪ ♪

- It may be a long-shot lead.

But it's a logical lead.

- And it's one of the only ones we have right now.

♪ ♪

- It's unusual to have a potential suspect

before we even know who our victim is.

Right now, we're still waiting for the fingerprints

from the medical examiner's office.

♪ ♪

- They're required to take a photograph of the vehicles

that they cite.

Hopefully, we-- hopefully, we get a break.

There she is.

- '94 Isuzu pickup, red in color.

That's the break you need right there.

narrator: They get an address from the truck's registration.

- If this pans out, then, boy, we lucked out.

That'd be a big break in the case.

narrator: The next day...

- We got an ID on our victim.

Here he is.

narrator: 28-year-old Alexis Molina

was an immigrant from Honduras who worked in construction.

He had recently moved to Dallas from Georgia.

- Unfortunately, it doesn't show a next of kin.

Well, without a next of kin, it means we're probably

gonna have to put his picture in the newspaper

or on the news to try to find somebody

that's related to him.

Then maybe we can figure out who's responsible for this

or why it happened.

[somber music]

[phone rings]

Detective Loboda.

narrator: McNulty has found suspect Arturo Mata's family.

- All right. All right, Joe.

I'm on my way up.

[dramatic music]

- You know, I think that's gonna--

that's gonna be our man.

Came in, showered quick, and changed clothes,

and headed out of there.

[suspenseful music]

- Joe, blood trail.

♪ ♪

- When it's got a tail going in this direction,

it means that-- - Yeah, I saw that.

- It means that the guy is, like, walking.

narrator: The blood trail leads right

to the suspect's front door.

[dramatic music]

CSI searches the apartment for further evidence

while detectives speak to Arturo's family.

- [speaking Spanish]

narrator: Arturo's wife says

she and her husband are estranged.

- She's very scared.

She's very afraid.

- OK.

- [speaking Spanish]

narrator: The family gives detectives a big lead

about suspect Arturo Mata.

His real name is Juan Francisco Herrera.

- If he's not home--

- And he's in his own vehicle.

- And he's in his own vehicle,

so he could be anywhere.

♪ ♪

narrator: Back at Homicide...

♪ ♪

- So Juan Francisco Herrera is not only wanted for murder.

He's also an escapee out

of the Texas Department of Corrections.

Apparently, he was arrested on a smuggling charge.

He was smuggling people from Mexico into the U.S.

So they've been looking for him for two years.

He goes back into Mexico, and then comes back in,

and picks up the name of Arturo Mata.

♪ ♪

And he's got, like, I think,

seven or eight different aliases.

- What I want to do is get out and let

the troops know his true name.

Let's get that out, OK?

- We can handle that.

- The potential for the suspect in this offense

to flee the country is tremendous.

♪ ♪

Time is critical for us.

I'm sending this out right now.

narrator: Loboda alerts patrol units to be on the lookout

for the suspect's red truck.

- Chances are, he's headed for Mexico.

We need to get him before he crosses the border again.

[dramatic music]

When you make the top 10 in Dallas,

I mean, there's a whole lot of people looking for you.

- A suspect like this, who has multiple identities,

who has the ability to move from one city to another one,

he's extremely dangerous.

And I think the fact that he escaped from a prison

puts him in a completely different category

than a regular suspect.

So there's an extreme sense of urgency

to get him off the street.

[dramatic music]

narrator: Two days later,

Loboda finally tracks down the victim's family.

They had seen the victim's photo on the news.

- All right, we'll see you in just a little bit, OK?

All right, bye-bye.

Nobody knew where he was.

And apparently, they don't know who he was with.

And they don't know where he was staying

or how he was providing for himself.

♪ ♪

narrator: The victim's mother and sister

arrive at the station.

- I'm very sorry that we have to meet this way.

- [speaking Spanish]

narrator: The family says the victim has

a seven-year-old daughter living in Georgia.

- Right now, what we're trying to do

is we're trying to arrest the guy that did this.

narrator: They show the family a photo of the suspect.

- Do you ever-- do you recognize him?

Does he look like somebody that you've ever seen before?

No?

OK.

We're looking for him.

And we're gonna try to arrest him

and bring him back to Dallas.

[dramatic music]

I think the likelihood of his just

coming in and surrendering

and giving up is about zero.

He'll go back across the border.

He'll stay there for about six months or a year,

come back across the border with a new identity.

We'll be waiting for him when he comes back.

I need to make sure that we do everything

we can to get him arrested and hopefully tried

and put in jail for a long, long time.

- Most criminals in a homicide investigation

run with no plans whatsoever.

Most crimes are committed in a heat of passion

or in commission of another crime.

So there is no forethought put into that actual escape.

Most people will either lay low or relocate.

But one thing about a homicide case

is that once you have a warrant on you,

with homicide, it never goes away.

It doesn't matter where you go in the United States,

even in some foreign countries,

that warrant will follow you forever.

- While I was asleep, I got a phone call

that we've had a homicide.

It sounds like there was a home invasion.

I worked that area when I was in Gangs

and also as a patrol officer.

So I'm pretty familiar with that neighborhood.

- Victim inside, dead in the bedroom.

Girlfriend that lives here with deceased.

- Was she here tonight? - Yes.

- Yeah, she was here during the shooting.

- Do we have an ID?

- Yeah.

His name is Dion Carr.

narrator: 28-year-old Dion Carr was born and raised in Tulsa

and attended Will Rogers High School.

Dion was learning heating and air conditioning repair

while working two jobs to support his family.

- All right, let's see.

narrator: Dion was shot in the chest, arm, and torso.

- The window is open.

And there's blood all over the floor.

There's blood around the window.

narrator: Under the window...

narrator: The team finds a single Air Jordan.

- There's mud in the grooves of his shoe there.

- I want to see by the window back.

- Mm-hmm.

narrator: Then... - What's up?

narrator: A gunshot victim was dumped

in front of Hillcrest Hospital

minutes after the call to 911.

- Where's he shot at?

narrator: The bullet hit his femoral artery.

And doctors are struggling to keep him alive.

- There's a bunch of blood droplets there.

- Yeah, looks like we got a drag mark of blood here.

The house is right here where our victim was shot.

And it looks like our suspect was also shot

and dragged across the street,

probably to the getaway car.

narrator: The team hopes hospital surveillance

will show who dropped off the gunshot victim.

- Go and get a good image of our suspect vehicle.

narrator: As Dion's girlfriend is brought down to Homicide...

- Yeah, here's his name.

narrator: Officers at the hospital

have identified the gunshot victim.

- Chauncey Thomas.

- I'm familiar with Chauncey from when

I used to work in Gangs.

Chauncey was arrested for homicide back in 2013.

During that homicide, he robbed a guy

with a .40-caliber handgun.

narrator: Chauncey was later acquitted of those charges.

narrator: She says the noise was coming from the window

behind their bed.

narrator: She says as they fought off the intruder,

a second man tried to climb through the window.

We want to figure out who did this to him, OK?

I mean, she's in the bed hanging

And then to have somebody just come through your window

from the time that Chauncey Thomas was

dumped at the ER.

- He was smart enough to wear a mask when he dumped him.

- There was only one shoe on him

when he got to the hospital.

- This is likely silver. But it could be gray.

it's gonna be his car.

We've chosen downtown to start driving around the hospital

where he was dropped off at.

If we find the car, it's gonna be epic, for sure.

And we need to sit down and have a talk.

- The goal is to see who he was in contact with on the day

- Chauncey Thomas died three days after the shooting

as a result of a single gunshot wound to his leg.

Apparently, the bullet struck part of his femoral artery,

which resulted in his death.

have finally come in.

Justin and Chauncey together on the night of the murder.

Chauncey at the hospital just connects all the dots

and links everything together.

Justin's got two counts of murder.

An arrest warrant has been issued.

Now we have a good idea that he's probably

in Kansas with his girlfriend.

So we'll work on that.

- New at 10:00, a man accused of two murders in North Tulsa

is now in the Tulsa County Jail.

Justin Harjo was taken into custody in Kansas.

at the Tulsa County Jail.

As a result of his actions,

Harjo was charged with two counts of murder,

one being Dion and the other one being Chauncey.

Even though he didn't pull the trigger to kill Chauncey,

he was acting in concert.

And under Oklahoma law, that qualifies him

to be charged with Chauncey's death as well.

- There's a great deal of unknown when a family has

to deal with a loved one's death and the person

responsible is trying to elude law enforcement,

because, in their minds, they understand

how powerful and far-reaching the arms

of law enforcement can be.

So it's hard for them to rationalize,

with all those resources, that you have not located

and brought this person to justice.

So for it to finally happen, it brings an extreme amount

of closure to their family.
