As a pro, you pick
a direction to go in.

narrator: Patrol checks
the woman's apartment.

Inside, they find her facedown
in her bedroom,

dead.

- OK, thanks.

Family was just notified
by patrol officers

that their mother's
been killed.

narrator:
Detective Dale Lundberg,

on Homicide for seven years,

will lead the investigation.

- What do you got?

- About 9:00 a.m., the daughter
starts calling Mom.

- Right.

- Mom's usually real good
about calling back

if she's on the phone.

No one's heard from her
since then,

according to the daughter.

- And that's when they get
the manager to open up?

- Yeah.

We just got
the warrant signed,

and we're about to make entry
into the apartment.

[indistinct chatter]

narrator: The victim

is 50-year-old
Stephanie Cathcart.

She lived with her husband
and had 4 children

and 13 grandchildren.

She worked several jobs
to support her family.

♪ ♪

- You know, look at all the
blood coming out of her ears.

♪ ♪

You know, so she's probably
got a fractured skull.

♪ ♪

You know, what gets me is just
the lack of a struggle.

She looks like she would have
put up a fight...

- Oh, she definitely
would have.

- If she'd have had the--
if she'd have had the chance.

This is the only splatter.

You got a little
back stuff over here.

But there's nothing up high.

I think he was down low
hitting her with something.

- I know.

She was already down
when that happened.

- I'm gonna want several
blood samples from that

just in case
whoever was assaulting her

had his hand cut
or anything else.

- I'll take a bunch
of DNA swabs.

narrator: The team searches
for a possible murder weapon.

- Maybe we're lucky enough
to find a murder weapon.

an Aunt Tara.

- Colleen talked with her.

I'm Detective Lundberg.

I'm in charge
of this investigation.

Stephanie's sister Tara

was the last family member

to see her alive
the night before.

- Just have a seat

Tell me about last night.

- Well, we was watching TV,
conversating.

narrator: Tara says they were
hanging out at her apartment.

- We didn't know
that it was actually that late

when he called her.

narrator: She says that
Stephanie's husband, Calvin,

called at around midnight.

- But he called her
and asked her,

"Do you know what time it is?"

narrator: According to Tara,
Calvin was angry

that Stephanie was out so late

and wanted her to come home.

- So she said, "That must be
my cue to go on and go."

And that was the last time
I talked to her.

♪ ♪

Her and him had been having
a lot of problems

for many months.

♪ ♪

narrator: She tells Lundberg

to talk to Stephanie's
daughter Tanya.

♪ ♪

- Where's Tanya?

narrator: Lundberg turns
to the victim's daughter

to get more information
about her father.

- I know something terrible
just happened,

and I am so terribly sorry.

But I need to ask you
a couple of questions.

Has he ever tried
to hurt your mom before?

- No, but he spoke that to me.

narrator:
According to Latanya,

her father threatened
to kill her mother

if he caught her cheating.

- When did he say that?

- About three weeks ago.

So we've been feeling this,
you know?

does he do?

her father was stealing
from her mother

to support a drug habit.

- He's a carpenter.

He pawned his tools,
and he called me

and asked me to give him
the money to get his tools out.

narrator: She says her father

may have taken
her mother's car.

blue, trimmed in silver.

And she don't allow nobody
to drive that car.

I mean, not to move it out
the street, not to do nothing.

narrator: She says her mother
had the only set of keys

to the Cadillac.

- Do you know
where he might go?

for the victim's husband,

- It looks like he had
an attempt murder conviction

from about 20 years ago.

He's been out seven years.

Right now, we just need
to find him.

told one of the officers

out at the scene that he
always carries something

that looks like Thor's hammer.

The next day...

- We're heading out to the auto
pound to look at the vehicle.

narrator: Patrol found
the victim's missing Cadillac

parked in a South Dallas
neighborhood.

- Hopefully we'll find
something

that may lead us
to the identity of the person

who killed Ms. Cathcart.

It looks like there's
a tool bag in there.

♪ ♪

[engine rumbling]

narrator: CSI dusts
the exterior of the car,

looking for a usable print.

- Holy--

- Where was it,
in the blue bag?

- Yeah, in the blue bag.

- Good little find there,
buddy.

- Thanks.

- That's a Thor hammer, right?

- Yeah.

narrator: There is blood

in the plastic bag
and on the hammer.

- It's wet, so you're not gonna
get any fingerprints on it.

- His DNA could be
all over the hammer.

- Yeah, but--yeah,
if he handled it,

his DNA's gonna be
all over it, though.

- Yeah.

We no longer have
to worry about searching

for a possible murder weapon

'cause now I think
we have it.

The next step we're gonna have
is to find family members

and have them describe
the hammer more in detail

to make sure
that there is no doubt

that this is the hammer
that Calvin always carried.

[line rings]

The brother says
that that's a hammer

narrator: A few hours later,
police track down Calvin

in South Dallas and bring him
to Homicide for questioning.

- We found him
in his mother's apartment.

- OK.

- These are the only keys
he had on him.

- Any of these look
like car keys to you?

- No.

- His wife has
a separate set of car keys

because he's not allowed
to drive her car.

- They may still be there,

but that's all he had
in his pocket.

- OK.

I'm Detective Lundberg,
and there are some questions

that I have for you.

Where do you work at?

- One of your daughters
said that you had

to get rid of a lot
of your tools recently.

- Mm-hmm.

- You had to sell them
or pawn them or something.

Why was that?

- It's that bad?

- How did you get
down to South Dallas?

- When's the last time
you saw your wife?

narrator: Calvin claims
the last time he saw Stephanie

was two days before.

- OK.

Was she real upset

and what was going on
with you and your addiction?

- Yeah.

But sometimes a confession
is not always that "I did it."

Sometimes a confession is,

"Here are the circumstances
around this."

But it takes skill to do that.

I think this investigator
realized,

"I'm never gonna get
a confession from this person,

"so let me get
enough information

"that I can be able
to put together a case,

"albeit it might be
a circumstantial case,

but let me get a conviction
on this person."

We're going out

start the car.

narrator: Lundberg calls
the victim's daughter

to tell her about Calvin.

- I just wanted

who's being arrested
for your mother's murder.

Usually you're happy
when you inform a family member

that the person who killed
their loved one's in jail.

This one's kind of sad

because it's a loved one
who killed them.

♪ ♪

- Out of all the times
that I've had in my career,

I always reflect back
in Homicide.

And in this particular case,
you had Caroline and Max and I

all basically
started our careers

at virtually the same time.

We all had went through
the academy together.

We all just miraculously
ended up in Homicide together.

Caroline is a tenacious
interrogator.

Max, he has the ability
to go out into the community

and establish relationships
with people.

He has that no-quit attitude.

And both of them together,
we had an awesome team.

I had the luxury of watching
veteran detectives

and learn from their mistakes.

And I've also learned
from their victories as well.

That was probably one
of the most rewarding times

that I've had
in my 27-year career.

7:00 a.m., Memphis, Tennessee.

At a trailer park
in the middle of town,

a woman calls 911.

When police arrive,

they find a man
in the parking lot,

dead.

♪ ♪

♪ ♪

- This is the trailer park

in the central part
of the city.

You got people
from all walks of life

and a lot of illegal activity
that goes on over here.

♪ ♪

- Got a male, Black,
shot multiple times.

narrator: Sergeant Terry Max
has 19 years

with the Memphis
Police Department.

He will lead
the investigation.

- Well, I had talked
to a female officer earlier,

and she found that female
who called 911.

She said that Trap is dead.

He'd been shot in the head.

narrator: 35-year-old
Lee "Trap" Davis

was a Memphis native.

He grew up in the neighborhood.

♪ ♪

- Oh, yeah, he shot him right.

I mean, this guy's got a lot
of bullet holes in him.

narrator: Investigators find
six small-caliber

shell casings near the victim.

- They actually executed
this guy right here.

♪ ♪

The perpetrator
knows their target,

because that's the only person
that can get

right up on them--

canvass the area
near the crime scene.

of the victim comes forward.

with two sex workers
and another man.

narrator: He gives them
the name of one of the women,

Bailey Mason.

She's 29,

has a very lengthy arrest
history for prostitution.

♪ ♪

narrator: Max sends out patrol
to pick up Bailey Mason.

[siren wailing]

♪ ♪

- Hey, girl.
- Hey. How are you, sir?

- How you doing?

- I'm OK.

- Why do you think you're here?

- Mr. Davis got murdered
right beside my house.

It had nothing to do
with me,

or I don't know
who would do it.

- OK, who were you with
in the trailer?

- Me and Trap.

narrator: Bailey says
she was with Trap

in the trailer last night.

- Blow sleeping on the couch.

narrator:
A man nicknamed "Blow"

and his girlfriend
were also in the trailer.

- At what time?

- Probably around 2:30
or 3:00,

something like that.

- Then what happened?

- We left right after him,
about...

narrator: She says she went
to sleep at a friend's place,

leaving the others alone.

♪ ♪

- Did anybody
get into an argument?

- No.

- But something happened

for somebody to get mad enough
at this [bleep] to kill him.

narrator: Bailey thinks Blow
may have shot Trap

after fighting
over Blow's girlfriend.

- Blow doesn't like him.

No one does--likes Trap.

- Who is Blow?

- Blow, I think his name
is Vershawn.

narrator: Max searches
for Blow's real name.

- Vershawn McCoy.

He's been arrested
with a pistol charge,

some possession
of drug charges.

Bailey thinks
a guy named Blow

may have had a reason
to killing Trap.

And what we need right now
is to find somebody

who saw this murder.

- The neighborhood where
this trailer park is located

is kind of drug-infested.

There's a lot of high crime.

People over here
are kind of apprehensive

about talking to the police

for fear that they'll be shot.

Hopefully we can find some
people willing to talk to us.

when a homicide occurs.

And one of the things that
we have to ensure people of

is that "I'm not here
to judge you."

Some investigators
tend to talk down on people

because of whatever lifestyle
that they've chosen.

So it takes
a skilled investigator

to be able to push through
all that

because at the end of the day,

here to extract information.

- That's Trap.

And we got eyewitnesses
to this incident.

That, along with other
information we have,

that's enough
probable cause

to charge Vershawn
with this crime.

I think Trap and Blow
got into a fight

over Blow's girlfriend,
and it just got out of hand.

People out there
that came forward and gave us

this information,
they were scared,

but they did the right thing.

homicide detective is gonna

ever have any level
of success

if he does not lean
on his team.

You can't do everything.
You can't be everywhere.

You can't knock on
a thousand doors by yourself.

You can't comb through
a thousand hours of video

by yourself.

So you need a team

And the goal
is to solve the case,

to bring closure
to that family.

So a seasoned investigator
puts his ego to the side

and puts the right people
in the right situations to win.

that they could rob together.

to get him out of jail
by robbing two drug dealers.

narrator:
Callie says that Omar

had bought drugs from them
in the past.

- So you understand
he was basically--

he's just gonna go in there,

and he's gonna take
the guy's money.

He's gonna take his gun
away from him.

- Yeah.
- Basically gonna rob him.

- Yeah.

- So what happened then?

- He knocks on the door.

He opens the door,

and he shoots him.

- Just shoots him right away?

- Yeah.
- OK.

- He just shot at him
when he opened the door.

He kept on shooting.

narrator: She tells Penrod
that she and Omar

searched the house for money.

- What did y'all end up
getting out of it?

- I didn't get nothing.

- There wasn't any money?

- He had $7.

- She's completely
put herself in it

as far as the robbery
and going up there,

walking up toward the guy
when he shoots him.

It didn't seem like
that freaked her out at all.

♪ ♪

You know, you almost want
to feel sorry for her.

She seems like
this meek and mild person.

And but at the same time,
you're looking at this guy,

lost his life.

narrator:
With Callie in custody,

Penrod turns his attention
to her associate, Omar.

♪ ♪

- See what he's got.

Burglaries, thefts,
that type of thing,

but nothing as serious as this.

I'm gonna send the marshals out
early in the morning.

Hopefully they can grab this
guy while he's still sleeping.

narrator: The next morning,

U.S. Marshals bring Omar
to Homicide for questioning.

♪ ♪

- This is the main guy we got
to get to talk right here.

If I can just get him
to even say he was there,

that would be great.

Hey, Omar.
How you doing, brother?

There's one thing we're
interested in on these cases,

and that's basically
who's behind it,

who caused it to happen.
- Yes, sir.

- And that's why I just
want you to be honest with me

about this thing.
- Mm-hmm.

- Can you do that, brother?
- Yes, sir.

- OK, tell me what happened.

narrator: Omar says that
on the night of the shooting,

he was driving around
with some friends

when he received a phone call
from Joey Cruz.

You know what I mean?

narrator: Omar says
that he learned of the murder

the following day.

- Omar, I want you
to listen to me

for just a minute, OK?

I've been doing this
for 17 years.

I know what really happened.

There's a certain set of events
that were set in motion.

There was somebody else
on this thing.

- And you know what Callie's
already told me?

You guys got to the house.

This is what's important.

You went up to the door.

There's something happened
right there at that door.

Tell me what happened.

- That's right.

narrator: Omar says that when
he approached the front door

to rob the house, he turned.

narrator: Omar says he thought
that Daniel would be armed.

- [sniffles]
- You can do it.

Let me have your hand.

Come on.

- What'd you do?

It's all right, brother.

Did you do this
to protect Callie?

What happened?
- [sniffles]

[speaking indistinctly]

- OK.

- All right, brother.
All right, then.

[speaking indistinctly]
- All right, brother.

I'll give you
a few minutes, OK?

So he's looking
in this guy's eyes

after he knows
he's killed him.

But the guy's not dead yet.

He knows he's gonna die.

They're looking
at each other eye to eye.

♪ ♪

He's been carrying that
with him on this thing.

♪ ♪

But it didn't bother him
so bad

that he didn't do something
to help the guy at all.

He just walked off and left him
with whatever life was in him.

He left him lying there to die
by himself in that dope house.

- I guess you feel like
you've made it in Homicide

when you can work a case
unsupervised,

when you start making
good judgment decisions

and then you have
good outcomes

just based on the decisions
that you made.

And when people
start coming to you,

asking you for advice
about cases,

it feels pretty good to know
that "I must have made it,

because people
started to trust me."

Then basically at that point,

they start looking to you
as, like, a go-to person.
