[Music]

poor Neville is obviously missing his

father as much as Cleary

I'm sure he is

darling I've been thinking I couldn't

possibly let you spend the night here at

the moment the bombings far too intense

but it's quiet enough in the daytime and

well if you come up we could have an

afternoon

had your hand on hers I saw you at the

theater

someone else

I heard up for glasses it was you

the lady had dark hair a fox wrap

I saw in the ladies doing the interval

she's an old friend

viewers and mummies mum is not here

but she doesn't know you go to the

theater with her

or anything else she doesn't know about

the weekends how on Earth

Lou you're not old enough to understand

stop treating me like a child when it

suits you to talk when doesn't I hate

you you're horrible you tell lies yes

Lou I do occasionally but only because I

don't want to hurt your mommy's feelings

then you don't want to either do you

telling her any of this would just make

a dreadful unhappy I can't explain to

you why things are the way they are

you'll just have to trust me I mean just

have to accept

anyway

huh

well Annie came into

see if you're frightened by The Raid I

was going to say we could go to a

shelter if you like

so sorry I got carried away I'm really

truly sorry

won't happen again

no

well I say good night

foreign

what are they doing killing women and

children

Terror bombing that's what it is trying

to scare us in the waving a white flag

your boy's still out of London isn't he

Frank

how should I work

anyways not my boss she says

I better get on

it doesn't mean I'm I'm not worried sick

Hello darling what a kind of daddy to

meet you and take out to dinner last

night

we we had narrowed yes and he said it

was quite a bad read and you were very

brave well I told him I wasn't

frightened of bombs

yes I did well it seems that someone's

dropped out and he asked if you could go

up there this morning and start

rehearsing straight away and I said well

I didn't think of course I can Mommy

that's wonderful

thank you

it's a terrifying your mother doesn't

know what you need

to leave everything set up

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

cheers Mrs Crips

cheers

oh this is nice yes

foreign

Russia

to that they might have bitten off more

than eating chew

let's hope you're all right

this is nice yes

[Music]

thank you

foreign

we did have fun that weekend didn't we

there's drawings I did of you didn't do

your justice but I've got one of them

with me now and it does at least serve

to remind me of small important things

like the way your mouth turns up at the

corners

well now I shall not be with you

tomorrow

and going to London to give up my

lodgings in Stoke Newington

there's really no point in keeping them

on

I've been given the day off to perform

the task of moving my possessions down

here

so you girls will have a holiday

when do we ever get a holiday

trying to be a writer Paul when do I

ever get time to write isn't that

Christopher

Christopher

I didn't know he was coming did you

it's lovely to see you Christopher

darling stay on at school

may not know that I'm 18.

so I you know I thought I'd come down

here and work in the garden

huh

what's that if it's all right with you

yes of course it is you you were such a

great help last time

why didn't your mother have a telephone

come to collect you from the station

um well I I walked most of the way and

I've got to live to the rest

so

it was easy actually

this is yours Miss milliment

I don't think I did that Mr well I don't

do I

it's all right for some

running off to the country now the

bombings got so nasty some of us have to

stay and face it it's where my pupils

are I really do hate giving up this

woman but I've hardly been in it for

over a year and I just couldn't justify

keeping it on

the taxis here the clock's ticking over

China

would you be so kind as to ask the

driver if he'd come up here give me a

hand with these cases I did he said he

couldn't do luggage he's got a bad back

I'm very kind of oh not at all oh

let's get you a porter

Porter

oh never mind

there or safely stirred away

and what is it

oh please please tell me what's the

matter

not that I've given up the rumor

got nothing have I well of course you

have you've got us

I have to feel useful

I was useful to prepare for all those

years

and I started to teach you and Jessica

and that felt he was full

and I love teaching Polly and Lydia and

Clary but

they will get older

still alive

I won't be able to teach

yeah

a little bit of my dick

you will never be abandoned

the Gateway

is gone

Christopher

he's here isn't he

foreign

go on sit down

well this is some Tom Foolery

running away from school

I haven't run away

I've left

I thought I'd come down here and do some

useful work it's far more useful work

for you to do than helping in the garden

here

you were 18 last week when will you be

joining up Christopher

I'm not going to join up Dad

I'm not going to fight

I don't believe in fighting

you know all this up

I thought didn't I

I lost a leg of fighting Germans

I wasn't even born when he thought he'd

be stupid

she was a future generation

we fought to save you

well then why is there another War

but there's no future in war dad

I'm very sorry

well I don't think the alternative will

be pleasant

if you won't fight you'll work

you'll do hard physical work

you'll build roads or defenses or

airfields or whatever

now get your things

you're coming back with me

[Music]

foreign

[Music]

they'll be all right as long as you

don't read me PG Woodhouse again I

laughed so much last time I was in agony

but I've brought Sherlock Holmes but um

I'm afraid I can only stay 10 minutes

today

a minute

I'm sorry but I've got Juliet with me

sand and I had to leave her with matron

yes I suppose you had to leave it with

matron well you know what babies are

like they take all one's attention I

understand

I could start a story I'm not really

feeling like one

anyway you couldn't read much in 10

minutes

I am sorry

but it's the nanny's day off you see

anyway I'm tired

sick and tired of the whole thing

I'll come again tomorrow please yourself

it's a bit Posh having a nanny isn't it

I don't really

she just helps me sometimes so that I

can come and see you

shall I come in with you no

please I'd rather not

foreign

no it did not close down

[Music]

no Lydia I was not given the sack

from time to time they changed the

actresses that's what Repertory

companies do

I suppose that's understandable

people get fed up with the same old

faces

I must write some letters and make other

companies aware that I'm available

there's Majesty's ships oh thank you who

is it from

Michael Hadley

I told him I was leaving the rep so he's

written to me here and he says he's much

too old for you hmm please don't be rude

mommy Michael's writing to me not

proposing to me I have no fears he would

ever do that

yes there's one for you

it doesn't make any difference Paul

it's just that General de Gaulle

couldn't trace him

it doesn't mean that he's dead

[Music]

foreign

building that Airfield they tell me

you're a Netty boy

it's ridiculous well they've been

working with you long enough dear words

good enough for me pack up again

where would I go I don't care as long as

it's out of here for God's sake you

stupid man

you don't believe what they said you're

just looking for an excuse to get me out

you've treated me like dirt ever since I

arrived here both of you you leave my

wife out of it she took my ration book

and what does she give me bread and

margarine every day

were you and she eat the rest

so nothing but thieves the people that

sets out

get out you should be in jail that's

where you should be we don't want your

son still failure give me that please go

on get out

what about my things

[Music]

[Music]

here we are

this is a good idea well if you get

queasy leaning forwards

let's do for some silly reason

s

ready

thank you darling

[Music]

thank you

[Music]

thank you

easier

[Music]

oh Clary would love this Dad

I'd love to give it to her

do you think it might not be more than

25 Shillings because that's all I've got

I'll soon find out

it's exactly 25 Shillings oh how lucky

dad an expensive present for you there

darling I know but I want to give it to

her

why are you smiling

I was just thinking what a very nice

daughter I've got

now let's take stock the writing box for

Clary the sewing table for your mother

I'm sure she'll

have that sent on now

anything else

pop it on

what do you think of it

think mommy would love it I just think

anyone would love it

right well I'm going to give it to

anyone take it off then

what do you mean anyone the first person

I meet after I've paid for it

thank you could we have the table in the

Box delivered this afternoon of course

thank you good day oh hello Paul fancy

meeting you

I knew you'd be the first person I'd

meet

you think is Marine before I know

they wanted to be the first

thank you come on

has mummy ever talked to you about the

possibility of her having another

operation

not much

she did mention it weeks ago but when I

asked her if it was going to happen she

said they'd changed their minds

that was a relief wasn't it

the last one made her feel so rotten it

must have been a relief

good

did she say it was a relief

she says

well I said oh what a good thing you

must be relieved

and she agreed that

dad you worry so much about each other

you always have

I bet you're looking forward to giving

Clary her writing box like anything

may make her a bit happier for a change

is she very unhappy dad of course she is

she wrote to General de Gaulle to ask

him if Uncle root was working as a spy

in France

and now she's finally got it lettered

back saying he wasn't known

I thought she might face up to the fact

that he's dead and she won't see him

again

but somehow she can't

loves him too much to bear it

sorry

of course he's your brother and you must

mind terribly as well

I absolutely understand

sorry about that though

and I can't tell Claire

would only distress for it you felt

there was no home

although there's always a shred of him

isn't there

must be

must be

don't miss the bank holiday

oh Hello darling

oh that must have dropped off

have a good day a very good day

it's so nice for Polly to spend time

with you

and for me with her

all right

Paul

I don't know what to say

it's so lovely

shares you must like me quite a bit

oh and open it

this is for Juliet

I got one of the nurses to choose it for

me she said it was the best she could

find oh it's lovely

she love it

thank you Roddy

it's really very kind of you

you're the first person to kiss me since

people don't love people just because of

their faces

or at least it's awful if they do

what makes you say that

I've been that sort of person

makes you feel rotten in the end

you know like being loved because you've

got a lot of money

you find hundreds of reasons to be in

love with you

with you they're moving me today

three o'clock

I asked them to let me tell you oh where

are you going

back to God only

I think I'm ready for another operation

thanks I'll let you come back here to

convalesce

and cross my fingers if I could

[Music]

off you go

[Music]

[Applause]

[Music]

thank you

[Music]

such a lovely day

well I don't know about that darling

still a bit chilly out here for me

do you mind if we go back

old as it was in Scotland last October

we were a bit unlucky there we went

unlucky darling

what a marvelous time

yes we did

I can't wait to go back

to see more of it well we will of course

we will

where are you going

with you I'm just going to change my

shoes darling I'll be fine of course you

will it's a precious weekend go and put

your feet up

good idea

go on right I'm going

[Music]

thank you

what a nurse the matter

oh God really

I have to talk to someone

do you need your hair washed I could

I am not taking more aspirin you know

what the doctor said these aren't

aspirin have been walking and my back

aches that's all

now you won't say anything to Daddy

about me taking these will you know what

it's like

the only fast and I really couldn't cope

with that

do you promise

promise

thank you

right

I know how hopeless things

pretending that everything is normal and

Life Will Go On as it was

thanks really

do I need this

you darling

I'm so sorry

what can I do

I can't think of anything

laughs

there's nothing anybody can do

are you sure she has no idea

she has none

she's quite sure she's going to get

better

she's certain it's just a matter of time

she's going to need nursing you know

I mean I can do all that's necessary for

now

but there will come time fairly soon

when she will have to have a

professional help

[Music]
