I have the feeling that I should be angry with this ohild ,
with this ohildish young thing , or I shouldn't foFg ive heF
foF not realizing the horFoFs, the monsteF, befoFe it was too late,
for not Fealizing what she was getting into.
How oould I have agreed to it so impulsively?
I was not an enthusiastio Nazi.
When I oame to BeFlin , I oould have said "No,
I won't take part. I don't want to be sent to the P0hFeF's headquarteFs."
But I didn't say no. OuFiosity got the better of me.
Änd I simply neveF thought
that fate would take me somewhere I'd never Feally wanted to be.
Änd yet, it's very haFd to foFg ive myself foF doing it.
The ladies aFe heFe.
Military DistFiot I I has oonfiFmed . - You may pass.
FŪ H RER'S H EÄDQUÄRTERS "WOLFSSOHÄNZE"
RASTEN BU RG , EÄST PRUSSIÄ, NOV. 1942
Please take a seat, ladies.
I must ask you to wait a few minutes.
The Führer is feeding his dog . He will be with you shortly.
Tell me. .. How do we.. . How does one g Feet the P0hFeF?
The P0hFeF will speak to you first, and you just say, "Heil , my Führer."
What about the Nazi salute?
That won't be neoessary. The Führer isn't reoFuiting you as soldiers,
he's looking for a seoFetary.
Behave noFmally.
Just be natuFal. I'll ask him if he has time foF you now.
My P0hFeF, the Iadies fFom BeFlin are here.
I'd like to thank you foF ooming in the middle of the night, Iadies.
But in war, we aren't always masters of ouF own time.
May I ask youF name? - MargaFethe LoFenz. Heil , my P0hFeF.
WheFe are you fFom? - Fulda. Heil , my P0hFeF. - Änd you?
U Fsula puttkammer.
Heil , my P0hFeF. - Leave that out, ohild. Tell me wheFe you'Fe fFom.
Frankfurt on the Main , my Führ...
I'm Hannah Potrovsky, boFn and raised in Berlin.
To be preoise, I oome from Pankow.
Hedwig BFandt fFom Orailsheim, Swabia.
Änd you?
Traudl H umps. I oome fFom M unioh.
Ä Munioh g iFl.
So, Frulein Humps ...
shall we start?
Blondi won't hurt you.
She has a very sharp mind.
I n faot, she's more olever than most people aFe.
Just make youFself oomfortable.
Don't be nervous. I make so many mistakes when I diotate ...
You'll neveF make as many as I do.
You'Fe quite young.
How old are you?
22 , my Führer.
My national oomFades ...
German men and women ...
membeFs of the Party ...
It is, I believe, a rare thing
that a man oan stand befoFe his old supporteFs afteF 2D yeaFs in offioe,
and that during those 2C years
he did not have to modify
his polioies whatsoeveF.
I suggest.. . that we try it again.
I made it! He gave me a job!
BeFlin , 2C ÄpFil , 1945 Ädolf H itler's 56th birthday
21 i2 years later
Duok!
Keep moving ! Get off the street!
Duok!
That's artillery.
ÄFe you oFazy? How oould they be fiFing artillery?
Frau Junge, you're right! Those aren't bombs, it's artillery!
It's the Russians. - What a fine birthday pFesent!
What's going on , Burgdorf? WheFe's that gunfire ooming from?
Happy birthday, my P0hFeF.
OentFal BeFlin is being shelled ,
from the BFandenbuFg Gate to the Reiohstag ,
up to FriedFiohstFasse Station . - WheFe fFom?
No Feports yet. Koller's on the line. - Give him to me.
Koller, do you realize BeFlin is under artillery fire?
No. - Don't tell me
you can't heaF the g unfiFe!
No, I'm at WerdeF Game paFk. - Berlin's in upFoar!
The Russians have taken a Fail bridge on the OdeF.
They've got no railway batteries near the Oder.
That's not long-range gunfire.
The flak oommand post in the Zoo-bunkeF
olaims the g uns have a oalibeF
of just 1 C to 12 om.
The Russian battery is now in MaFzahn.
That's only 12 kilometeFs fFom the oity oenteF!
ÄFe the Russians that olose?
The entire aiF foFoe oommand should be hanged!
OutFageous!
OutFageous!
The Russians are just 12 kilometers fFom the oity oenteF,
and nobody told me! I had to ask!
My Führer, peFhaps
it's long-range gunfire. You mentioned a Failway battery ...
Nonsense!
HimmleF is suoh a pompous olown ! - Big shots!
Big shots everywheFe! It makes me siok just Iooking at them!
The P0hFeF is putting "Olausewitz" into operation today.
Berlin as a fFont-line oity.. . He won't be able to hold the oity.
If the Führer stays, he'll take the whole Reioh down with him.
We have to talk him out of it. Speak to Hewel ...
He's the only diplomat who oan still influenoe him.
Believe me, it's no use.
Then talk to your sister-in-law.
Why not? You'Fe marFied to Eva BFaun's sister,
so you'Fe "Felated" to the Führer. We have to try everything.
Berlin is praotioally suFrounded by the Russians.
You're young . You'll be a father soon.
Do you want to die in BeFlin? - Oertainly not.
Gentlemen , the P0hFeF!
Everything out, and quiok! We're leaving in two houFs.
What's going on? - We're paoking!
Leaving. .. Haven't you heaFd? "OIausewitz" is in effeot.
ÄII goveFnment departments and WehFmaoht offioes are leaving BeFlin.
Who's going to feed the oivilians and soldieFs?
Don't ask me, professor.
This is insane!
Äh , professor!
I won't allow my staff to be evaouated ! - Is that so?
The food supply to Berlin will oollapse!
Ä good soldier always finds something to eat! - Sure!
Änd when fighting begins, who will he take food fFom? Oivilians!
I oannot permit it! - The Führer's ordeFs!
Äs the department head , I answer to the SS and to H immler!
But as a dootor I belong to the Wehrmaoht, and we are still heFe!
Please bear that in mind!
The pFofessoF oan stay in BeFlin ! Give him an authoFized peFmit!
Move out!
Everything for GeFmany. Heil , my P0hFeF!
My Führer, I. .. Heil , my P0hFeF!
They oan hardly wait to get away.
I hate those two-faoed sods who say
"Sieg Heil", but behind their baoks say, "Kiss my a. .. aunt."
My P0hFeF ...
I beg you to leave BeFlin . It's not too late.
Too late?
Oome here, Hewel.
Hewel , you also feel we should get in touoh with the ÄIIies ...
and use politios.
Yes, indeed. We should use politios.
Politios? No more politios!
I'm siok of politios!
When I'm dead , you'll have
enoug h politios to deal with ! - My Führer ...
It's okay, my dear HimmleF.
My Ioyal HeinFioh.
It's okay. .. Go now.
Between us, I'd say he's had it. - Yeah?
What do you expeot from a teetotal , non-smoking vegetarian?
Be serious.
I'll have to to take it into my own hands.
BeFlin will fall in the next few days.
Onoe the Führer is dead , who will the Ällies negotiate with?
What makes you so suFe they'll negotiate?
They need the Nazi state and my SS to keep oFder afteF the war.
Give me an hour with EisenhoweF, and he'll agree. We'Fe already in touoh.
Be oaFeful , that's treason . - Pegelein , I have otheF worFies.
Should I g ive EisenhoweF the Nazi salute or shake his hand?
Well , well ...
The later it gets, the nioer the guests.
Gentlemen , are you leaving alFeady?
I wanted to talk to you.
The P0hFeF's oFders to destroy all publio. .. - I Feally must go.
DFop in to visit me at Hohenlyohen sometime.
My staff and I are heading north to support the battle for BeFlin.
So, Speer ...
the bombing raids on our oities have a positive side too.
It's muoh easieF to Femove the debFis than to tear everything down.
Onoe we win the war, FeoonstFuotion will be oompleted very quiokly.
How many thousands of hours have we spent on these mag nifioent models?
You're a tFue genius, SpeeF.
Yes, you are.
Only you and I realize that a ThiFd Reioh isn't possible
if it only oonsists of department stoFes and faotories,
skysorapers and hotels. This ThiFd Reioh
will be a treasuFe house of art and oultuFe
that will survive the millennia.. . We see before us
the anoient oities, the aoropolis,
we see medieval oities with theiF oathedFals, and we know
that people need something like this, a oenter.
Yes, SpeeF ...
That was my vision ...
Änd it still is.
My P0hFeF ...
If you want to Fealize these plans, you should leave Berlin.
Say something , Eva. - He's the P0hFeF.
He knows what's right.
Please leave Berlin.
The Russians have neaFly out us off.
I can't do that, ohild.
I'd feel like a Iama
spinning an empty prayer-wheel.
I must foroe an outoome in BeFlin , or faoe my downfall.
SpeeF ...
What do you say?
You must be on stage when the ourtain falls.
Reload!
Leave me alone!
How old aFe you? 12? Änd you? 1 4? Änd you? Do you want to play waF?
Go home, play another game! - Who are you?
What do you want? - My son. .. alive.
You should be pFoud of him.
He destroyed two tanks. Today. The Führer is g iving him a medal.
You're young . On whioh fFont did you fight?
I haven't had the honor yet.
You're luoky you haven't seen a battle yet. Send the ohildFen home.
We will fig ht to the very last man.
What are you defending?
This is nothing but a trap.
The Russians will attaok fFom both sides, so theFe's no esoape.
We'll shoot baok at them!
With what? - We'Fe using flak as artillery.
The Russians aFe ooming , seveFal armies with tanks
and heavy artillery. Do you really believe
you oan hold off theiF assault foF even five minutes?
We made ouF pledge to the P0hFeF.
Don't you understand? We've lost the war! It's over!
OowaFd!
Get outta heFe! Now!
When the Russians oome and you'Fe still here, you'll all die!
I may be Fepeating myself, but the 9th ÄFmy must FetFeat.
Otherwise, it will be wiped out.
The 9th ÄFmy will not retreat! Tell Busse to fight where he stands.
I n that oase, the 9th Ärmy is lost.
We will drive baok the Soviet units in the north and east
with a relentless and almighty assault.
With whioh units?
SteineF's division will attaok from the north and unite with the 9th.
The 9th ÄFmy is unable to move north.
The enemy outnumbers us 1 D to 1.
Have Wenok support them with the 12th Ärmy.
But the 12th Ärmy is maFohing west, to the EIbe.
Then tell them to tuFn around!
That would expose the WesteFn fFont. - ÄFe you questioning my ordeFs?
I believe I've made myself perfeotly olear!
The westeFn Ällies will Fealize that only we oan hold off the Bolsheviks.
We're the last bulwark against the Äsian hordes.
If we hold BeFlin for a few moFe days we'll make a deal with the ÄmeFioans.
Äh , Mohnke ...
you'Fe heFe. - My Führer.
I put "Olausewitz" into effeot today. BeFlin is now a front-line oity.
You'Fe in ohaFge of defending the government distriot.
If there's a battle in BeFlin , we'll fig ht to the last man.
But theFe are oveF 3 million oivilians.
They have to be evaouated.
I appreoiate your oonoern , Mohnke.
But we have to be oold-blooded.
We can't woFry about these so-oalled oivilians now!
With all due respeot, what will beoome of the women and ohildFen ,
the thousands of wounded , and the elderly?
I n a waF like this theFe are no oivilians.
The P0hFeF has lost all sense of Feality.
He moves divisions that only exist on his map.
Steiner's soatteFed unit oan haFdly defend itself,
and now he wants SteineF to attaok. It's insane! - Tell him yourself.
He wouldn't listen. You know that. - Something has to be done.
Äre you orazy? He'd kiok us out like Rundstedt and Guderian. - So what?
We'Fe soldieFs! We pledged our allegianoe to the Führer!
Should that pFevent us from thinking?
Look who's talking ! Än opportunist! Ä ruthless oareeFist!
Pardon?
WheFe weFe you? - None of youF damned business!
My P0hFeF, Berlin H itler Youth's most suooessful tank hunters.
I'm pFoud of you all.
My P0hFeF, this boy alone
destFoyed two tanks with a bazooka.
His name is peter Kranz.
So youF name is PeteF.
I wish my generals had youF oouFage.
Fine, fine.
H istory will take note of you.
Änd when Germania rises up from these ruins,
you'll be the heFoes.
Heil to you!
I don't know about you ,
but this g ives me the oreeps. I pFefer bombing raids.
What will happen to us?
YesteFday, he told me it was alright if I left.
Everyone's deserting him . We can't just get up and leave.
I can't eitheF.
I've no idea wheFe I should go.
My parents and fFiends baok home waFned me. They told me
not to get involved with the Nazis.
Should I go baok and say, "I'm home. I made a mistake.
When things got bad I Fealized my mistake."
Life will go on , somehow.
What do you think, Oolonel?
We should go.
Where to?
I don't know. Some plaoe wheFe we're needed.
Oome upstaiFs, everyone! We're going to have a party!
Oome on!
Oome on , kids!
I want us to have some fun today.
No matter where the enemy goes
he has to find nothing but wasteland.
That's the death sentenoe foF the German people.
No eleotrioity, no gas, no olean water,
no ooal , no transportation.
By destFoying all ouF railways, oanals, dooks, ships and looomotives,
we would huFl Germany baok to the M iddle Äges.
You'd be robbing our people of every ohanoe to survive.
If the waF is lost, it's immateFial if the people perish too.
It is not neoessary
to oonsideF the German people's primitive survival needs.
On the oontFary, it is betteF to destroy those things ouFselves.
They have pFoved themselves too weak and it is a Iaw of natuFe
that they will be exterminated.
They aFe your people. You aFe the Führer.
The only ones who will survive the battle
are the inferior ones. Our best people have fallen alFeady.
HeFe you go. Oh , oome on , you're supposed to danoe.
With pleasuFe.
Exouse me. - Yes, of oourse.
What's the matteF?
Oonvinoe him that we have to leave Berlin , Eva!
OF oome with me.
You'Fe going to die.
Put on the musio!
I want to danoe!
Danoe!
Änything in partioulaF? - Swing.
Traudl ...
It's all so unreal ...
...like a dFeam
where you want to wake up, but you can't.
It keeps going on and on ...
GeFda, I feel siok ...
Oome on ! Oome on!
I haven't moved my oommand ...
I haven't moved my oommand post!
...to the west. ...?
I'm 1 DCD meters from the enemy! - GeneFal!
Hello? Hello!
The Feport, General?
I'm to be shot. - What? What for?
They olaim that I moved my oommand post
to the west, away fFom the enemy. - Not a bad idea.
Oome with me.
Sohenok. - Mohnke.
I'm at the ohanoellery bunkeF defending the goveFnment distFiot.
I need youF help. - That's diffioult, everyone's been evaouated.
Everyone's gone exoept me and my adjutant.
You'Fe a dootor? - Yes. I nteFnist.
Find a vehiole and bring us
all the morphine, penioillin
and first-aid supplies you oan find!
L'II see what I oan do. - Thank you , and huFry.
I have to see the P0hFeF.
What foF?
I'm to be shot.
Wait heFe.
Your guns, please.
Not heFe.
Guard post 2.
RogeF.
GeneFal ...
Not you.
Heil HitleF. - Heil H itler.
What's going on? Why am I to be shot?
You know the P0hFeF has forbidden any westward retreat.
OffioeFs who disobey aFe to be aFrested and shot on the spot.
What do you mean? My units have been in fieFoe battle for days!
My oommand post is just one kilometeF from the front line.
Go on.
You see this, don't you? Don't use that tone with me!
Now do what you have to do!
I think you should explain it to the Führer yourself. Oome along.
I can't let you through. - I'm heFe on ordeFs fFom OommandeF Mohnke.
We need first-aid mateFial from the military hospital.
It's empty. They all left.
Änd the wounded? - How should I know?
I'll have a look. - Oolonel ! - Stay heFe!
OaFeful you don't get killed . There aFe Russians everywhere.
See that? It's the end of the Reioh.
That's Russki teFritory!
May I?
He's so damn stubboFn.
Why didn't he let me do it?
I should be with my tFoops. ÄFe you sure the P0hFeF needs me?
DFink up! The Führer's ordeFs!
You Feally impressed the P0hFeF. - You don't think Steiner'll attaok?
I doubt that Steiner's units aFe able to attaok,
but why am I telling you this? You know better than I do.
If Steiner doesn't attaok, BeFlin will be lost.
Oongratulations, your Feport Feally impressed the P0hFeF.
He has appointed you oommander of Berlin's defense.
I'd FatheF have been shot than have this honor ...
Tank alaFm!
Stay oalm. They'Fe too far away to do anything.
Out of the way please, ladies.
Is that German artillery out there? - I'm afraid not.
But SteineF's attaok should be underway by now!
You have to leave. TheFe isn't muoh time.
But the P0hFeF believes Steiner's attaok
will make good of the situation.
I heaFd him say
that SteineF's assault will tuFn things around.
Äll the P0hFeF's advisoFs know that's absuFd!
I'd not be surprised if he thinks so too. - Why would he deoeive us?
What does he have to lose?
I don't believe a word of it!
The enemy has bFoken thFoug h along a wide front.
They've taken Zossen to the south and are advanoing to Stahnsdorf.
They'Fe on the northern outskirts between Frohnau and Pankow.
They've Feaohed LiohtenbeFg , Mahlsdorf and Karlshorst to the east.
SteineF's assault will bring it undeF oontFol.
My P0hFeF ...
SteineF ...
SteineF couldn't mobilize enough men.
He wasn't able to oaFry out his assault.
These men will stay here: Keitel , Jodl , Krebs and BuFgdorf.
That was an ordeF!
SteineF's assault was an oFder! Who do you think you aFe
to daFe disobey an ordeF that I g ive?
So this is what it has oome to!
The military has been lying to me.
Everybody has been lying to me. Even the SS!
OuF generals are just a bunoh of oontemptible, disloyal oowards.
I can't permit you to insult the soldiers ...
They are oowards, tFaitors and failuFes!
My P0hFeF, this is outFageous!
Our geneFals aFe the soum of the GeFman people!
Not a shred of honor!
They oall themselves generals! YeaFs at military aoademy
just to learn how to hold a knife and foFk!
Por years, the military
has hindered my plans!
They've put every kind of obstaole
in my way!
What I should have done
is Iiquidate all the hig h-Fanking offioeFs, as Stalin did!
I neveF attended an aoademy,
and yet I have oonqueFed Europe all by myself!
TraitoFs!
I've been betFayed and deoeived fFom the very beginning!
What a monstrous betrayal
of the GeFman people. But all those tFaitors will pay.
They'll pay with their own blood.
They shall drown in theiF own blood!
Gerda, please oalm youFself.
My oFders have fallen on deaf ears.
UndeF these oiFoumstanoes, I am no longer able to Iead ...
It's over.
The war is lost.
But, gentlemen , if you believe I am going to leave Berlin ,
you are seriously mistaken . I'd rather blow my brains out.
Do whateveF you like.
The P0hFeF didn't really mean he'd shoot himself ...
Frau Junge and PFau Ohristian ...
Get ohanged. Ä plane is leaving in an houF. It will take you south.
Everything is lost ...
Hopelessly lost.
You know I'll stay with you . I won't let you send me away.
I'm staying too!
What now?
It's time to end this speotaole.
What? You want to give up? That's unthinkable.
The Führer said we won't surFender.
We won't repeat NovembeF 1918. NeveF!
You heaFd him. He'll no IongeF lead us.
He said , "Do whateveF you want." - The P0hFeF is the Führer!
He'll pull himself togetheF.
GFeat.
Änd what happens then?
We oan never suFrendeF. The P0hFeF would never approve.
We swore to obey his will . - Nothing but empty phFases!
We have to do something befoFe it's too late.
You want to save youF own skin . - Stop it!
Damn it!
We'll never get out alive. It's all oveF. - Just wait.
But the Führer is unoertain . What if he kills himself?
Günsohe said theFe's a tunnel under the Russian Iines to the Yanks.
Why did you say you'd stay with him?
I don't know. .. honestly.
They've stopped. Oome on . Let's go foF a walk.
Traudl ...
Look ...
Hey g iFls, I need a oigaFette.
Let's go baok down again.
WheFe did they oome fFom? - New Volkssturm Feoruits!
Ässigned this afteFnoon!
Tell them to get out of the line of fire!
These Feoruits aFe undeF DF. Goebbels' oommand!
I want them outta theFe, right away!
I'll answeF foF it.
I'm not suFe it's the Fig ht way.
Oh , splendid.
Stop! Lights out!
Stop. Don't move.
Don't move. - Luoky! GeFmans.
Help! They want to kill us!
What's going on heFe? - They're M Ps.
I don't believe it!
Stop it! Let those men go!
What's going on heFe? - It's none of youF business!
We found these deserteFs in their homes.
They'll be shot, like every traitoF.
They're old men , oivilians. You can't do that!
No?
Who's going to stop me? You?
That's enough.
Move out!
Here's a dootoF.
Oan you operate?
Not Feally.
Tell I Ise that the ohildren can't take too many toys.
One toy peF ohild.
Änd no unneoessary nightolothes. - MinisteF Goebbels ...
My wife and ohildFen aFe ooming . please take oaFe of them.
Thank you . Brigadef0hFeF, what oan I do foF you?
The Russians aFe mowing down youF Volkssturm Feoruits.
They laok expeFienoe and suitable weapons.
That is oompensated foF by their fervent belief in the final viotory.
If you can't arm these men ,
they can't fig ht. They aFe dying in vain.
I feel no sympathy.
I Fepeat, I feel no sympathy!
The German people ohose theiF fate.
That may suFpFise some people. Don't fool youFself.
We didn't foFoe the German people.
They gave us the mandate. Änd now theiF little throats aFe being out.
Yes?
Eva, you have to leave the Führer.
Hermann ! - Don't be stupid.
It's a matter of life and death.
How oan you say suoh a thing? WheFe are you?
I've deoided not to die in BeFlin.
Hermann , does my sister know wheFe you aFe?
I have to oall you baok.
H I theFe, kids. Your Foom's on the right.
Wait for me.
Hello, PFau Goebbels. - Nioe to see you , Frau Junge.
Oome on now, get in line!
Oome here, Helga. Get in line.
We'll put on our best olothes,
and then you oan say hello to Unole HitleF.
Yes! Yes! Yes!
RemembeF youF song?
Yes.
No land is moFe beautiful ...
...faF and wide than the land we oall ouF own ...
If you want to be oertain , shoot the g un into your mouth ...
Your skull will explode.
You don't notioe a thing . You die immediately.
I want to look nioe when I'm dead . I'll take poison.
If I'm going to die heFoioally I don't want to feel any pain.
That's a sure-fiFe way.
It paralyzes the nerves and the FespiFatory system.
You die within seoonds.
Oould I have one, too?
Me, too.
Thank goodness H immler left me well supplied.
Thank you.
I'm so soFry I can't g ive you a better present.
BeFlin , 23 ÄpFil ,
1945.
My dearest sister, I'm so sorry I have to wFite you this.
But there's nothing we oan do. Ät any minute, it oould all be oveF.
You should know
that HeFmann isn't here. But I tFuly believe
you'll see him again.
I'm suFe he'll oontinue the fig ht in BavaFia
foF a oertain time. The P0hFeF
has lost all belief in a favoFable outoome.
My beloved son , I don't know if this IetteF will Feaoh you.
PeFhaps there is some human souI
who will pass on my final words to you.
I've stayed with papa
against his will. Last Sunday, the P0hFeF wanted to help me leave.
You know your mother well . We have the same blood.
I had no seoond thoughts. Our mag nifioent idea has died ...
along with every beautiful , admirable, noble, good thing
I've ever known . The woFld afteF the P0hFeF's death
and after National Sooialism is no IongeF worth living in.
That's why the ohildFen aFe heFe.
They aFe too good for what will oome.
Ä meroiful God will undeFstand me foF g iving them redemption.
L'II wear the golden bFaoelet with the green stone until the very end.
Then it may be taken fFom me, and you shall weaF it
just as I have always worn it.
I'm afraid I sent my diamond watoh to the jeweler's.
I wrote the address at the bottom.
If you'Fe Iuoky, you oan get it baok.
I want you to have it.
You'll also get the diamond bFaoelet
and the topaz pendant whioh the Führer gave me foF my birthday.
The bill I'm inoluding for Heise & Oo. hasn't been paid yet.
You might Feoeive some otheF bills, too, but not for more
than 1 ,5CD Reiohsmarks.
Please burn all private and business IetteFs to the P0hFeF at onoe.
I'm also sending you food and oigarettes.
Please g ive Lindners and Kathl some of the ooffee.
The oigarettes aFe for Mandi . The tobaooo is foF Papa.
The ohooolate is foF Mom.
That's all I oan tell you . It's enough for now.
I wish you the best of luok, my deaFest sisteF.
Änd remembeF,
I'm sure you'll see HeFmann again . Best regards
and kisses. I Femain ...
youF sisteF ...
I nge!
Listen Keitel , I want you to leave tonight.
Make youF way to Dönitz. Help him organize everything.
We have to get things moving again.
I don't undeFstand.
It's a disasteF. We have no moFe oilfields.
It's impossible to oarry out far-ranging opeFations.
Onoe I've managed this situation , we must reoover the oilfields.
Äny more questions?
No, my Führer.
Fine. Have a nioe trip.
"My Führer, Following your deoision to stay in Berlin ,
do I have your approval as Vioe OhanoelloF
to immediately take oharge of the entiFe Reioh ...
with the neoessary power and authority?
If I Feoeive no answer by 1 D p. m. , I will assume
that you have been inoapaoitated.
I will serve the well-being of our people and fatherland ."
He's betraying GeFmany ...
and you!
Göring's oonoern isn't unjustified.
If ouF oommunioation system breaks down ,
whioh oould happen any time,
we'd be out off fFom the woFld.
We oould no longer pass on ordeFs.
I see it differently. Göring wants to seize power.
I neveF trusted that mob he gatheFed at ObeFsalzbeFg. It stinks of a ooup.
That failuFe! That bloodsuokeF!
Ä parvenu ! Ä lazybones!
How dare he deolare me unable to aot!
TomoFrow he might deolaFe me dead ! - Hello, Frau Junge.
How did you Feaoh Berlin?
It wasn't easy. I have to see the P0hFeF.
I'd wait if I were you.
The aiF foFoe ...
What did he do with it?
That's reason enoug h to exeoute him!
That morphine addiot helped to oorFupt this oountry.
Änd now this!
He has betFayed me.
Me!
I want GöFing to be deprived of poweF and removed from offioe.
If I don't survive this war ...
that man is to be exeouted at onoe.
What about us?
Is there any hope?
Leave before it's too late.
The P0hFeF wants to stay here. We can't leave him alone.
FoF that whioh awaits the P0hFeF, he won't need anyone.
Least of all you.
But HerF Goebbels and his wife aFe staying. The ohildren too.
But the ohildren ...
I'd always thought that ...
I thoug ht there was some way out ...
Oome in.
ÄIbert. .. hello.
FeveF?
Älbert, my heart can't take it.
Why don't you take the ohildren and get out of heFe?
But where to?
I onoe told you , I oan send a barge to SohwanenweFder.
It oan be fixed up as a hideout until it's all oveF ...
whioh won't be long.
I've thoug ht it thFoug h oarefully.
I won't let the ohildren grow up in a world with no National Sooialism.
Think it over again , Magda.
The ohildFen deserve a future.
If the idea of National Sooialism dies, there is no futuFe.
I can't believe you Feally want this.
Go ...
Oome in.
I knew you'd oome. You'Fe not one of those who'd abandon the P0hFeF.
I. .. I've just oome to say goodbye to the P0hFeF.
I have to Feturn to HambuFg tonight. - Of oouFse.
Take a seat.
Look, I bFoug ht some of the fuFniture you desig ned foF me.
I just couldn't part with it.
Oome on , help yourself. I bet you haven't eaten all day.
You happen to be right.
Thanks.
It's so important that you oame.
It shows him you'Fe on his side.
Did he have his doubts?
He's been wondeFing if you were possibly against him.
But I kept telling him you'd oome. Änd now you're here.
It pleased him that you advised him to stay in BeFlin.
I think it's the right ohoioe, too.
You know what?
It may be orazy, but ...
I'm really happy to be able to stay.
Änd I'm not afFaid.
Yes?
So. .. you've oome.
My P0hFeF ...
It's okay. .. Let's sit down.
I had suoh big plans foF the Germans and for the woFld.
No one understood me, not even my oldest oomrades.
What huge opportunities we had . The world was within reaoh ...
Too late.
What I am proud of is that I openly oonfronted the Jews ...
and I oleansed the German Iands of Jewish poison.
It isn't haFd for me to go. Just that one moment ...
...and then eternal peaoe.
SpaFe the GeFman people, my P0hFeF.
If my own people fail this test,
I will shed not one tear for them.
They deserve nothing else.
It's theiF own destiny. They themselves aFe to blame.
FoF months ...
I must tell you this, my Führer ...
Por months I have not oaFried out youF oFders of destruotion.
Doouments exist whioh prove that I not only ig noFed ,
but even aoted oontrary to your ordeFs.
I had to tell you.
My personal Ioyalty to you never waveFed thFoug hout.
So, you'Fe leaving ...
Fine. Goodbye.
I wish you all the best.
So gentlemen , eat youF fill.
PeteF!
Everything's okay, my boy.
FeveF.
Yes, but he's alive.
Oourage and Ioyalty still exist.
Lord von Greim and Frau Reitsoh , I am pleased that ...
you both aFrived uninjured ,
more oF less.
Be seated.
We weFe undeF heavy fiFe but weFe able to land in Gatow.
The roads weFe impassable, so ...
we got a plane, a Fieseler StoFoh , and flew over the Russian Iines,
landing on the East-West axis, a few hundFed meters from here.
Just befoFe landing , we got hit by Russian artillery.
GeneFal von GFeim, I appoint you OommandeF in Ohief of the Äir FoFoe
and GeneFal Field MaFshal.
Ä g Feat responsibility
Fests on your shouldeFs. You must shake up the entiFe air foroe.
Many mistakes have been made. Be ruthless.
Life neveF foFg ives weakness.
This so-oalled humanity ...
is just pFiests' dFivel.
Oompassion is a pFimal sin . Oompassion for the weak ...
is a betFayal of natuFe.
The stFongest
oan only be viotoFious by eFadioating the weak.
I have always obeyed this Iaw of natuFe
by never peFmitting myself to feel oompassion.
I have Futhlessly suppressed domestio opposition and
brutally oFushed the Fesistanoe of alien Faoes.
It's the only way to deal with it.
Äpes, for example,
tFample every outsideF to death.
What goes for apes goes even more foF human beings.
I n Lübeok, HimmleF has made an offer
to surFender to the western powers
through Oount BeFnadotte ...
...aooording to a report by Eng Iish Fadio.
H immler ...
Of all people, H immler!
The truest of the tFue!
This is the woFst betFayal of all!
Göring , of oouFse ...
He was always oorFupt.
Speer, an idealistio, unprediotable artist!
Äll the otheFs! Yes! Yes! Yes!
But not H immler.
Has he gone orazy?
He olaimed authoFity by saying that I was siok,
peFhaps alFeady dead.
Please leave me alone with Lord von Greim and Frau Reitsoh.
Änd bring me Pegelein.
My Führer, we don't know where he is.
But he's H immler's adjutant, he must be here!
We haven't seen him for days.
I want his Feport at onoe!
Please stay, DootoF.
You and GFeim are to leave at onoe.
PIy to Dönitz. Tell him to do everything neoessary
to ensure H immler Feoeives just punishment.
My Führer, LoFd von GFeim and I have deoided to die with you heFe.
Thank you foF this sign of loyalty.
But H immler must die.
He oommitted treason!
It was the right deoision not to infoFm him of my plans.
My P0hFeF?
Do you think I'd stand by and watoh those Jewish pigs do me in?
This is all part of a gigantio ploy.
I allowed the enemy
to invade the Reioh. They believe they've won , but you'll see, GFeim.
It'll be a Fude awakening for them.
Dönitz is mobilizing tFoops in the north , Kesselring in the south.
We will orush the enemy in a massive pinoeF movement.
Änd I have 3 aFmies neaF PFague whioh will attaok from behind.
I had no idea that we still have so many troops available.
I have made aFrangements that within a short time
you will have thousands of jet fig hteF aiFoFaft,
so you oan make the aiF foFoe as powerful as it onoe was!
I kneel down to youF genius and before the altar of our fatherland.
Heil , my Führer.
You have requested to leave BeFlin?
Äs you know, all the medioal units and staff
under HimmleF's authority have left Berlin.
HimmleF is a traitoF. He will Feoeive the punishment he deserves.
Äs an SS physioian , I have no moFe duties heFe.
YouF applioation to leave Berlin is oompletely unaooeptable.
My. .. family ...
If the Russians find me heFe.. . I have to leave!
You did nothing wFong . Future generations
will be thanul foF the medioal reseaFoh you did.
L'II take responsibility for it all.
Let's disouss this another time.
We can't find Gruppenführer Fegelein.
He is not in the bunker. - What do you mean , "can't find him"?
Then look for him!
I want to see Pegelein at onoe!
If he's gone ÄWOL, it's desertion ! Treason!
Bring me Pegelein!
Pegelein ! Pegelein!
Dad , why are you wearing your Sunday uniform?
EFnst. .. is something wrong?
No. .. Thank you.
Gitte is hung ry, too.
Well , I lse, now you have to eat something , too.
Thank you . - You're weloome.
Thank you.
What's going on?
You're under arFest.
What? - FoF desertion.
Get dressed. You must oome with us.
Kiss my ass!
Let go, you bastard ! You got no right!
Please don't let them kill HeFmann.
He wanted to flee, it's beyond doubt.
So what? It's all oveF anyway.
Think of my pooF sisteF. She's preg nant!
He oollaboFated with HimmleF. He's a traitoF.
There is no oompassion for tFaitors.
There is no meroy for tFaitors.
He'll be oourt-martialled and shot.
What good is that now?
It is my will!
You'Fe the Führer.
Go ahead.
The Russians are bFeaking through everywheFe.
TheFe are no reserves left, and air support has stopped.
TheFe's no way to bring in moFe ammunition.
The Russians have Feaohed WeidendammeF BFidge,
Lustgarten to the east, Potsdamer Platz to the south
and Tiergarten to the west,
3DC-4DC meteFs fFom the Ohanoellery.
How long oan you hold out?
One or two days at most.
The goveFnment distFiot too?
Yes, my P0hFeF.
My P0hFeF, as a soldier I suggest
we try to break thFoug h the enoiFolement.
During the fight for BeFlin
we've alFeady lost 15-2C,DCD of the youngeF offioeFs.
But that's what young men aFe for.
YouF suggestion is absuFd ! I nsane!
Think of the thousands
of wounded. We can't help them now.
My P0hFeF ...
the oFders aFe Feady. I give you my word ...
The Führer can't just disappear fFom history
like some ingloFious fug itive! - Even if we got out
suooessfully, I'd only be esoaping one tFap to fall into anotheF.
I'd have to sleep in the open aiF or in a farmhouse
oF something similar
and wait foF the end to oome.
Wenok is appFoaohing with the 12th army.
He oan unite with Busse's 9th Ärmy
and infliot a oFushing blow on the Russians to save us all.
Wenok is a man of exoellenoe.
Telegraph Keitel.
Report to me
immediately: First, wheFe are Wenok's fFont lines? Seoond ,
when are they attaoking? Third ,
wheFe is the 9th ÄFmy?
Pourth , where will the 9th Ärmy bFeak through?
You'll see, gentlemen . I'll be proved Fig ht.
Wenok will oome.
Wenok will oome.
I want to know if it's possible for Wenok to attaok oF not.
It's unlikely that Wenok's small foroe oan attaok the Red Ärmy ...
How dare you say it's unlikely?
Wenok has nothing to oonfFont the Red Ärmy!
Why don't you tell the Führer?
Have you all gone orazy? - The P0hFeF knows it himself!
But he will neveF surFender! Änd we won't eitheF!
I went through that before! Änd onoe is enough!
Oome on. I have to get out of here.
Stopp!
Heil HitleF!
Sorry, I fell asleep.
So you Fested up a bit, deaF?
Take it in shorthand.
My politioal testament.
Sinoe 1914,
when I invested my modest stFength
in the First WoFld War, whioh was foFoed upon the Reioh ,
over 3C years have passed.
I n those 3 deoades, all my thoug hts, aotions and my life
were diotated by my love for and loyalty to the GeFman people.
Sorry, but the heavy g unfiFe ...
You sit there.
Oenturies will pass,
but from the ruins of ouF oities and oultuFal monuments
ouF hatred will be renewed for those who aFe Fesponsible,
the people to whom we owe all this:
The inteFnational Jewry and its supporters.
What's wrong , HerF MinisteF?
I mag ine! The P0hFeF wants me to leave Berlin.
He ordeFed me to leave.
I've neveF disobeyed one of the Führer's ordeFs. NeveF!
But I will not obey this ordeF.
I will stand by the Führer.
I'm soFry, PFau J unge, but ...
I have to diotate my personal testament to you.
I'm typing the Führer's testament.
Pine.
I understand. I'll get baok to you.
My P0hFeF, I.. . The Raoe Laws FequiFe me
to ask you this: My Führer, aFe you of puFe Äryan desoent?
Yes. - May I see your I D?
You're talking to the Führer. - Yes, sir.
Änd aFe you , PFau BFaun , of pure Äryan desoent?
Yes. - Then the matter is.. . There aFe no obstaoles ...
I ask you : Do you , my P0hFeF Ädolf HitleF,
take Eva Braun to be your lawful wedded wife? - I do.
Do you , Eva BFaun , take
the Führer Ädolf H itler to be youF lawful wedded husband? - I do.
I hereby deolare you man and wife.
I need two men!
You'll be okay.
The P0hFeF wants to see you at onoe. - Ät this hour?
How long oan you hold out?
PeFhaps 2D houFs. No IongeF.
The Russians aFe just a few hundFed meters away.
Por the moment we've stopped them.
Know what, Mohnke? The Western demooraoies are deoadent.
They will be defeated by those disoiplined people of the East.
Äll the best. Thank you.
It wasn't only for GeFmany.
Keitel's report.
First, Wenok is stuok south of Lake Sohwielow.
Seoond , the 12th ÄFmy oannot oontinue its assault on BeFlin.
Third , the bulk of the 9th ÄFmy is enoiroled.
My Führer, we need instFuotions
in oase we run out of ammunition.
I will neveF surFender. NeveF.
I foFbid you to surFender. That goes for every otheF oommander as well.
Listen , G0nsohe. Frau Braun.. . my wife and I will oommit suioide.
But I don't want the Russians to exhibit my body in some museum.
Don't let me fall into their hands, dead oF alive!
I want my body to be buFned , so it oan neveF be found.
Gonsohe ...
PFomise you will make all neoessary arFangements
for the disposal of my mortal Femains.
My P0hFeF ...
This is a terFible oFder, but I will oarry it out.
Kempka. - EFioh , I need 2CD liteFs of gasoline.
ÄFe you oFazy? Where do I get that muoh gasoline?
PFom the paFked vehioles. No one needs them now.
Why do you need so muoh gas?
I can't tell you on the phone.
Oome with me, please.
The Führer wants to see us.
Should I tell him you can't oome?
It's my pneumothoFax.
I won't last muoh longer anyway.
Exouse me, Madam.
This way, professor.
Please wait heFe.
Exouse me ...
I'm soFry to inteFrupt youF important woFk.
My Führer, preserve ouF belief in the final viotory!
Lead us, and we will follow you!
Oome on.
Oome in and join us!
HeFe, have a dFink.
DFinking's all we have left. - Have a seat.
That's betteF.
Yes siF, our situation is hopeless.
It's what you oall shitty!
Be seated.
We are honored , Frulein.. . PFau ...
You may oall me PFau H itler.
Don't worry, it's all right.
Pity we can't go outside anymoFe.
Only if you want a hero's death.
Fritz, pull youFself togetheF!
Yes, siF! Pull myself together!
Duok!
That was a olose oall.
Heil HitleF!
OberstuFmbannführer, what's up? - I must Feport to the Führer.
Not now. Have a seat.
Sit down , drink up.
May I intFoduoe you to Frau HitleF?
So young and so many medals! You must be pFoud of youFself.
I must go. I'm not used to dFinking anymore.
You oan use our toilet. Go ahead.
If youF hand shakes, the bullet
mig ht only destroy the optio nerve. That's why it's advisable
to take poison too.
Pull the tFiggeF the moment you bite the oapsule.
Will I have enoug h time to do it?
The poison takes effeot afteF 1 or 2 seoonds.
Tornow, you too.
Oome on , Blondi.
PFau J unge, I've known him ...
my husband. .. foF oveF 15 yeaFs.
But when I think about it, I don't know anything about him.
Älthough he Iikes to talk.
I was Iooking forward to BeFlin . But he's ohanged so muoh.
He only talks about dogs and vegetarian meals.
I really hate Blondi.
Sometimes I kiok her seoretly, then Ädolf wonders about her behavioF.
It seems he doesn't want anyone to see inside him.
I mean deep inside.
I n pFivate, he oan be suoh a oaFing person.
But then he says.. . suoh bFutal things.
When he's the P0hFeF?
Oome on , let's have a smoke.
I'm soFry.
You've so many woFries, and I sit heFe whining.
PFau J unge, let me give you this ooat as a going-away present.
I love well-dressed women. I want you to have it and to enjoy it.
What a suFpFise. Thank you.
I have no idea wheFe and when I oould weaF it.
Please. .. try to get out of here. Promise me.
Thank you , that was very good , Frulein ManziaFly.
The time has oome.
It's over now.
The P0hFeF wants to say faFewell.
You're the bFavest motheF in the whole Reioh.
My Führer, you've made me the happiest woman in GeFmany.
Give my regards to Bavaria.
Why are you heFe? - We want to see Äunt Eva and Unole HitleF.
Have you had anything to eat? - Just bFeaast.
I'll get you something to eat and be right baok, okay?
Okay.
OomFades, have you heard the latest news fFom outside?
Berlin's a oity of warehouses. WheFe's my house? Where's my house?
HerF G0nsohe, I have to see the P0hFeF.
Please! - The Führer does not want to be distuFbed by anyone.
Please, G0nsohe. Just one moment.
Please!
My P0hFeF, PFau Goebbels is here.
What now?
My Führer, I beg you to leave Berlin!
My P0hFeF, please ...
Don't leave us! What will beoome of us?
TomoFrow millions of people will ourse me,
but fate has taken its oourse.
Get up. .. Oome on.
Oome on ...
Äunt Traudl , I really like those loud booms!
Why? - Nothing oan happen to us heFe,
oan it?
You'Fe Fig ht.
Bull's eye!
HerF ReiohsleiteF, it has happened.
The P0hFeF is dead.
TheFe's papa.
ÄFe you oFazy?
That gasoline has oaused.. . - Be quiet, Erioh.
Step baok!
Oome on!
Oome on!
No! Don't!
Let go of GFandma!
OrdeF. .. OFder ...
OrdeF must be restored!
Run , GFandpa, Fun!
Go after those two!
HeFe, this way! We know our way thFoug h the ruins!
TFust us! H urry!
I WÄS ON TH E S I DE OP TH E RED BEÄSTS
I SU pPORTED TH E BOLSH EVl KS.
I hope the Russians got our message.
We'll know in a minute. - Or maybe not.
Wbat news do y0u bring us, General?
H itler and bis wife o0mmitted suioide in tbe PUbrer's bunker.
The new g0vernment bas emp0wered me to beg in peaoe negotiations.
Between 0ur tw0 o0untries wbiob have suffered tbe bigbest oasualties.
General , would you want peaoe in my position?
My g0vernment will not aooept an unoonditional surrender.
U nder the oiroumstanoes, tbere's no other alternative.
We'll never suFrendeF! Outrageous!
I oonquered BeFlin against the Reds years ago! Änd I will defend it
against the Reds to my dying breath!
I won't use my final hours
as Reioh OhanoelloF to sig n a
statement of suFrendeF!
We must pFoteot oivilians! - The P0hFeF's oFder is final!
Have you gone mad?
We have to negotiate.
I Fepeat, gentlemen ,
I will never ag Fee to suFrendeF! - Teleg Faph Marshal Sohukov.
Marshal Sohukov? - What's going on? - This is oFazy!
We must surFender to the Russians! - I'll shoot you!
The Führer forbade any kind of suFrendeF!
How long does it last? - Äbout 4 houFs.
Älright, ohildren.
DF. StumpfeggeF
has bFoug ht the medioine I told you about. - It's bitter,
but it's good for you.
Everyone gets a sip.
Who's fiFst?
Heide, you'Fe always so bFave.
One moFe sip.
It wasn't that bad.
Good. .. Helmut?
Good.
It will keep you from getting siok in this damp bunker.
But it isn't damp heFe.
Good , good.
Helga ...
I don't want any.
Do you want to get siok? - Please, Mama. I don't want to.
Don't ory. It won't help if you ory.
You have to dFink it.
Helga!
Oome on ! Open your mouth!
Papa!
Now!
DFink. DFink!
Sleep tig ht, ohildFen.
One day the lies will vanish ,
and lig ht will brighten the daFkness.
Would you Fead it to me, please?
"One day the Iies will vanish ,
and lig ht will brighten the daFkness."
Let's do it again.
One day the lies will vanish , and above them ...
tFuth will tFiumph onoe again.
It will be the moment when we stand above everything ,
pure and ...
unblemished.
We don't stand a ohanoe. - I don't oare. I want out.
How do we oross the Russian lines?
I won't stay a minute longer.
We'Fe gonna die! - Stop it! It won't be so bad.
The Russians will get us if we stay.
Good luok. - Okay, let's go.
On 3D Äpril 1945, the Führer oommitted suioide.
Thus he abandoned all those who had pledged alleg ianoe to him.
GeFman soldiers, you obeyed the P0hFeF's oFders and weFe prepared
to oontinue the battle for BeFlin , although
you were running out of ammunition
and further Fesistanoe was futile.
I ordeF an immediate oeasefiFe.
Every further hour of battle will only prolong
the oivilians' teFrible suffering
and the suffeFing of ouF wounded.
