[Rodrigo, in English] Good evening, Officer.
[Stevens] Any particular reason
you rolled through that stop?
Stop? Uh, I-I'm sorry.
Look at my finger.
Follow it without moving your head.
[suspenseful music plays]
You see? Ready for church.
[compartment opens, closes]
That your son?
Yes.
How old is he?
Fifteen.
- Hm. - A little late for school night, no?
Where does he go to school?
Uh, it's a private school in Sherman Oaks.
- Good for you. - Yeah.
Doing pretty well. What kind of business you in?
I have my own company.
There it is.
"Celebrity Travel."
Must roll with some pretty big enchiladas, right?
I'm not supposed to say,
but I just put Ricky Martin's husband in a Miami cruise.
- No, you did not. - Yeah, he's my friend.
- He's my friend. - No shit.
Family friend.
You got any ID for the boy?
Yeah.
Watch the stops.

- [El Jefe] Cesar! - [gasps]
[sewing machines turn off]
[in Spanish]
[El Jefe speaks]
[in English] This is not Tijuana.
Sorry, Jefe.
He push it too hard. I told him, and...
He did this.
[El Jefe] Are you okay, hermanito?
[shaky breathing]
What is your name?
[in Spanish]
[ominous music plays]
Jesús.
[in English] From Puebla.
The free land of Puebla.
[ominous music intensifies]
What is the truth?
The truth is that as much as we want to be free...
we live and we die together.
This is America.
Now we all gotta pay, papi. [sighs]
[banging on blackboard]
- [Cesar] Back to work. - [machines turn on]
Come on, this isn't Acapulco, eh?
[machine turns on]
[machines whirring loudly]

[indistinct chatter]
- [banging on door] - [worker] Hurry up!
Come with me. Come with me, cabrón.
Look at me, puto. Look at me!
I'm this close to becoming a manager.
So I don't care if you're sick, stupid, or your machine blows up.
You mess with me again, eh,
and I'm gonna scramble your pinga, guey.
- [pained grunting] - [sizzles]
Welcome to the family, cabrón.
[clothes iron thuds]

[indistinct chattering]
Are you okay?
Does it hurt?
[somber music plays]
Do you wanna see?
You don't say much, do you?
Did you ever?
Where is she?
My father's back in Mexico.
I haven't seen him in a long time.
[somber music continues]
[Cesar] Lights out, homies. Let's go.
I'm Elena.
Good night.
[switch clicks]

- [operator] The number you have reached is not-- - [phone thuds]
[distant phone ringing]
[footsteps]
[tense music plays]
[tense music continues]
[Lucille] Tell me,
what do you love about Him?
He...
He taught me to love my neighbor...
and my enemies...
and God.
[Lucille] And while you seek with this empty devotion,
you forgot to love the only person that matters.
Tell me,
what do you love about yourself?
[breathes deeply]
I don't know.
There is nothing a man god can teach you about love.
[tense music playing]
[Cesar] Back to work!
Let's go! Come on, this isn't Puerto Vallarta. Let's go!
[woman 1, in Spanish]
[woman 2, in Spanish]

[indistinct police radio chatter]
- [knocking on door] - [Carlitos] Cesar, the police are outside.
Get out of here.
[distant chattering]
[suspenseful music plays]
[Cesar] May I help you?
Yes.
Uh, I'm looking for Rodrigo.
- Who? - Rodrigo.
Rodrigo Ramirez.
I don't know any Rodrigo, dawg.
[chuckles] Oh, no?
That's funny 'cause I think he knows you.
Sorry, papá.
See, his car pulled in here the other night, so...
Parking's tight around here.
I don't know what to tell you.
Can I see some ID?
[chuckles]
Is there a problem, Officer?
No, just a routine, uh, suspicious call.
Make a little report, that's all.
[in Romanian]
[police dispatch, in English] 2-11 in progress, 444 South Flower Street.
All units proceed. Officers need backup.
[in Romanian]
[in English] Copy that.
[Cesar] People come, people go.
My father's business.
Kind of business you in?
The busy kind.
- Maybe I'll just wait, if you don't mind. - [police car door closes]
It's a free country, isn't it?
Kind of hot. How about inside?
Fuck you, huh?
Sir, 2-11 in progress. All units requested.
You talk to your papa with that mouth?
Get a warrant, motherfucker, huh?
You can't come up in here like this.
I know my fucking rights, huh?
[grunting]
[Cesar groans]
[in English] Sir! Officers need--
- Officers need backup. - [shouting in Spanish]
- All units requested. - [continues shouting in Spanish]
[Cesar continues shouting in Spanish]
[continues shouting in Spanish]
[Cesar spits, groans]
[Jesús grunting]
[El Jefe, in English] My son, Christian,
his job was always the same.
Get the milk.
[ominous music playing]
Sitting in the right place,
using the right style.
But some days, no matter what you did,
the cow was in a bad mood,
so she wouldn't give you milk.
But I show him the way.
[Jesús breathing heavily]
Yes, I show him the way to make her happy.
If you kiss her gentle...
[imitates sucking sound]
...the cow would think that one of her babies is feeding,
so she would give you all the milk you wanted.
But still,
my son was always slow.
My wife would tie his feet
and beat him until she could fill a glass with his blood.
She said that this would remove weakness from his body.
[faucet squeaks open]
- But she was right. - [Jesús whimpering softly]
My wife spoke the truth.
[shaky breathing]
It was weakness.
It was just weakness.
[Jesús whimpering]
[door slams close]
This is gonna tickle, a little.
[Jesús whimpering]
[Jesús yells in pain]
[loud cheering]
[dramatic music playing]
[scraping]
[dramatic music continues]
- [camera shutter clicks] - [loud cheering continues]
[footsteps thudding]
[dramatic music continues]

["El Party" by Stephen Justiniano playing]
[heavy breathing]
[Elena whispering] Hey.
Hey.
- [gasps] - Shh! Shh!
You'll wake Cesar.
It's okay. I just wanna help.
It's okay.
It's okay.
This will help.
It'll stop the burning.
Can I?
Turn around.
Careful, careful, careful.
Yes, okay.
Okay, hold your breath.
This is gonna hurt.
[Jesús wincing]
Sorry, sorry, sorry.
Sorry.
Are you okay?
[chains jingling]
Good night, Jesús.
[door closes]
[footsteps receding]
[dramatic music plays]
[breathing deeply]
[man commentating in Spanish]
[crowd chanting] Jesús!
- [loud cheering] - [somber music plays]
[somber music continues]
[no audible sound]
[somber music intensifies]
[light instrumental music plays]
[music fades]
[El Jefe, in English] I have to meet the quota this month.
Loss is relative, isn't it?
I cannot lose another worker.
[tense music plays]
[sewing machines turn off]
[tense music continues]
It's...
from a long time ago.
Mine too.
But I promised myself it would never happen again.
And I can promise you the same.
[Cesar] Back to work.
[machines turn on]
Remember when I told you about my father?
That I hadn't seen him in a very long time?
My mother told me he left before I was born.
I used to always ask her when he was coming back.
And she would say...
"When you grow up and make a name in the world."
I always dreamed,
if I became a designer...
people would know my name...
and he would come back.
[sobs softly] I'm sorry.
I have to do this.
I'm sorry.
[Elena sobs]
[somber music plays]
[somber music fades]
- [knock on door] - [Macavay] Come on in, Andy.
[paper rustles]
So, "Officer enters premises and conducts unauthorized search.
When asked to produce a warrant officer assaults citizen without cause."
Anything to add?
Sounds like a pretty bad egg.
He made your plates. Review board meets Friday.
Either way, our victim's pressing charges.
You're gonna jam me up because some guy in the rat squad
is putting the finger on me on the word of some guy in Echo Park?
[Macavay] The victim has two avulsed molars and witnesses.
He came at me with a screwdriver.
What do you want me to do, talk therapy?
[Macavay] Look, I don't want you within a hundred yards
of that guy or that place.
That'll be all.
I got IRS filings, business tax, property taxes. Uh, they're all clean.
They also got a bunch of places. LA, Ventura, San Gabriel, Vernon, Anaheim.
I mean, looks of those returns, they're slaying.
And they're actually having a charity event next week for Greyhound rescue--
All right, stop.
If it was me, I would go back to Harvard and 2nd,
and I would take detailed descriptions of anyone and everyone
who goes in and out of that place,
as well as get the tag and the vehicle numbers.
Check and see if it shows up in any other places.
Sir, IA says we can't be within a hundred yards of the premises.
They said I can't.
[indistinct police radio chatter]
[distant phone ringing]

[footsteps]
[door closes]
[Raul speaking Spanish over phone]
[woman and Raul conversing]
[tense music plays]
[TV static]
[somber music plays]
[Jesús whimpers softly]
[somber music continues]
[beeps]
[Lucille on TV, in foreign language]
[Lucille in English] Very good, my love.
[girl on TV] Please, don't. I wanna go home. [sobs]
[Lucille on video camera] Shh, shh. It's okay.
- [girl] Please, don't. - [Lucille] There is nothing wrong giving someone pleasure.
[door opens, closes]
- [indistinct chattering over video camera] - [footsteps approaching]
[tense music plays]
[running footsteps]
[distant police siren wailing]
[door closes]
[suspenseful music plays]
[groans]
[suspenseful music continues]
[shaky breathing]
[suspenseful music intensifies]
[Adriana] Marco?
[Jesús breathing shakily]
[in Spanish]
[El Jefe speaking]
[footsteps receding]
[trembling breath, gulps]
[footsteps]
- [El Jefe, in English] Gordo. - [Gordo] Ninety-five.
[El Jefe] Edgar.
[Edgar] Seventy-six.
[El Jefe] Marcela.
[Marcela] Ninety-seven.
Carlitos.
One ninety.
Good.
You said I would be promoted...
once I finished my quota.
Right?
Yes, of course.
But the truth is...
one cannot make the quota.
We must make the quota together... as one.
You should know this.
You're going to be a manager.
[whimpering softly]
No.
No.
[chair creaks]
Sit down.
You keep stealing from us.
[Carlitos sobbing]
You're never gonna let us leave.
You're never gonna let us leave.
Never! Never!
You're never gonna let-- Ah!
- [Carlitos grunts] - [Cesar speaks]
Are you deaf, marica, huh?
- [Carlitos grunting] - [punches landing]
[dark music playing]
[thuds]

[suspenseful music plays]
[no audible sound]
[suspenseful music intensifies]
[locks clacking]
[in Spanish]
- [girl gasps] - [Rodrigo exclaims]
[machines whirring loudly]
[tense music plays]
[footsteps receding]
[chattering in distance]
[heavy breathing]
[Rusanovschi, in English] You ever thought of being a detective, sir?
You might already have.
I knew this guy, Jimmy K,
took down a supplier in Riverside moving 30 keys a week
after a two-month operation.
And so what? New guy jumps in moving 35 keys a week.
Made no difference. So, Jimmy goes back to the streets,
where he can get some action and not sit
behind a desk forever.
But, you know, I'm guessing
maybe that's the type of person that you are.
I'm not assuming that that's--
Rusky, could you shut the fuck up?
Forever?
Thank you.
[dramatic music playing]
[dramatic music continues]
- [knock on van] - [gasps]
[indistinct chatter]
[machines whirring loudly]

[tense music plays]
[car horn honks]
[roll-up door clanking]
[engine stops]
They're getting that bent out of shape over wrong-colored hangers?
[Nazarian Sr. speaking Arabic]
[in English] Okay, I'll repack and reship. My cost.
[in Arabic]
[heavy breathing]
[car door opens, closes]
[indistinct chattering]
[worker, in English] Yeah! I'm coming. Don't you worry about it.
- [Aram] Everybody has their part, but not one department-- - Aram.
Pull all the Now 21 stuff.
What's the problem?
I'm psychic, and I had a vision it's not gonna pass QC.
[grunts, curses in Arabic]
[in English] Yeah, you must be psychic too,
'cause that's the exact same reaction I had
when my father jammed those wrong-colored hangers up my ass.
So why don't you run back there and tell those chinks they better double time it.
Now!
[phone ringtone plays]
[man speaking Arabic]
[shaky breathing]
[ominous music plays]
[horn blaring]
[Nazarian, in English] Hey, hey! There he is!
That's the kid! That's the fucking kid!
Security, stop that fucking kid!
What the fuck are you staring at? Get up there and get him!
- You two, get up there! - [worker] It isn't safe, boss.
[Nazarian] I don't give a shit! Just get him down from there!
[indistinct arguing]
[Nazarian] Why the fuck are you still over here? I told you to get him!
[guard 1] What the fuck are you doing? Get down from there!
[Nazarian] What are you, his fucking principal? Go up there and get him now!
- [guard 1] Let's go! - [Nazarian] Fuck! Go get him!
- Fuck! Don't let him get out! - Yes, sir!
- [indistinct shouting] - [action music playing]

- [worker] Whoa! Hey! Watch where you're going, kid! - [Nazarian] Hey, stop him!
- [guard 2] Hey, kid, stop! Get over here! - [Nazarian] Grab him! Grab him!
[Nazarian] Stop him! Stop that fucking kid!
Come on!
[Rusanovschi] Stop! Stop right there! Police!
Police! Stop! Stop!
- [tires screech] - [car horn blaring]
[indistinct shouting]
[indistinct chatter]
[seller] Shit, I don't want panties. Whoa!
You're gonna pay for that, you little motherfucker!
[Nazarian] You're fucking kidding me!
[upbeat music playing]
[salesman 1] Three dollars for the speakers.
[salesman 2] We're all working here!
- [grunting] - [Nazarian] Kid, come on! Stop!
He stole my phone!
- [seller 1] Jesus! Fuck! - [objects clattering]
[woman speaking in Spanish]
[Nazarian panting loudly]
[seller 2, in English] Hey, man, you wanna buy some?
6.99 each, 9.99 for two.
- [Nazarian] Ah! - [seller 2] Okay, okay, come back. I'll give you...
[car horn blares]
- [action music continues] - [panting]
- [car horn blaring] - Come on, man!
- Watch the fuck where you're going! - [driver] Fuck you, asshole!
Watch where you're going!
[panting]
[Nazarian] Watch it!
What a bloody moppet.
People have no awareness of what's directly in front of them.
[horn honking]
[Stevens] Look out for a young Latino male, 12 to 14 years old,
5-foot, long black hair.
Last seen wearing blue jeans and a soccer jersey,
heading south on Alvarado.
[indistinct chattering]
[panting] Look, I am so sorry I'm late.
The 10 was a parking lot.
- It was absolutely-- - I don't care!
You can't come to work on time!
[continues shouting indistinctly]
Get your school handbag! Hey! [laughs]
Back to school, huh? I have a good one for you, eh? 9.99.
You'll be the coolest cucumber on campus.
[Nazarian] Ah! I got you! [grunting]
- Ah! - [objects clatter]
Stop that fucking kid! He stole my phone!
Hi, can I take a minute of your time? Help save the duck-billed platypus!
[panting]
[R & B music playing over speakers]
[Lisa] Baby, which of these do you like better?
- Mo. - Yeah, yeah. Give me a second, sweetie.
- Seriously? Hey, just-- - Hey.
I-I-- I'm on it. I'm on it.
- Are you serious? - What-- Sweetie, what? All right.
God. Let me see.
This one is 19.99, and this one is 9.99.
I love this. I love this one. I love it.
- All right? - Ugh. God, whatever.
Which of these do you like better?
What do you think?
[Nazarian panting]
- Whoa. Sorry, homie. - Excuse me.
[dressing room door opens, closes]
- [air hisses] - [inhales deeply]
Oh, my God! What are you-- Mo! Stop it!
- Hey, hey, hey, hey! - Whoa, whoa, whoa!
- What are you doing, you little bastard, huh? - No, it was an accident!
I'm sorry, man! I'm a designer! I'm a designer!
- Designer, my ass! - You know, this is a nice coat, man!
- A really nice coat! - [indistinct shouting]
[Mo] Come back here!
[panting loudly]
Stop!
Goddamn it!
- [Jesús grunts] - Agh!
- Agh! Agh! - [thudding]
Stop! Oh, goddamn it!
You little shit! What are you doing?
You're gonna break your fucking neck!
Do you wanna die?
[distant police siren wailing]
[panting]
- [car horn blares] - [tires screech]
- [Jesús grunts] - [Stevens] Jesus Christ!
- [Rusanovschi] Is he okay? Is he okay? - Are you okay? We'll get some--
- Hey, what are you doing? Look at me. - Uh, um...
- A-Alpha 112, we're requesting-- - Look me in the eyes.
- Get off the horn and get the med bag. - I can't--
We're making an assessment here. Don't move.
Get off the radio and get the fucking kit!
[Rusanovschi] Shit!
Easy. You okay?
You all right, buddy?
- You running from somebody? - [Jesús groans]
¿Habla inglés? ¿Español? No?
- Is someone chasing you? - Sir, shouldn't we call an ambulance?
Yeah. Do that, Rusky.
- Call the, uh, bomb squad and the SWAT team while-- - [Nazarian] Hey!
- Kid, you all right? You got away from me there. - Hey.
- [relieved sigh] - Sir, is this your boy?
- Oh, no, he's my manager's son. - Ah.
- Can I see some ID? - Yeah, yeah, of course. Yeah.
I, uh, couldn't give his dad the afternoon off.
Kid was going a little stir-crazy. Here's my card.
Lucky Fashion Group?
Oh, you know what they say, "The clothes make the man," Officer.
"Naked people have little or no"--
"...or no influence in society."
You have any, uh, ID for the boy?
Uh, yeah, yeah. Let me text his dad.
Have an all-hands-on-deck situation there.
- Thousand shirts going to the wrong state. - [cell phone whooshes]
Having a real crazy day at the office.
But, uh...
You're a Twain fan, huh? That's, uh...
Whoa! Hey. Sorry, no.
He grabbed this out of my room.
Just got a bunch of inventory logs and price codes on it.
Boring stuff.
- Give it. - All right.
Should be a camera in the trunk.
[exhales] It's, uh, really boring stuff.
I think he thought there were games on it or something.
Yeah. What'd you say the boy's name was?
- Sergio. - Sergio.
Family's Catholic. Strict.
Hm, yeah. Got an address?
- Uh, you and your dad live out in, uh, Boyle Heights, right? - Boyle Heights?
He said he lived on Harvard.
I don't think so. Not unless they moved.
- We'll get little Sergio home. - Officer, uh, look, we're a small operation.
If any of our competitors got a hold of that,
they could really chop our legs off, you know?
Ain't it the size of the fight, not the dog?
- Tell that to my old man. - Not a Twain fan, huh?
Uh, not a fan of losses.
- [cell phone vibrates] - Ah. Whoa.
Yeah, look. His, uh, passport right here.
Says "Javier."
I have 500 employees, Officer. Uh...
Play hide-and-seek with all of them?
Tell you what,
send this to me, this number.
- Yeah. - Gonna run this in.
Stay here, sir.
[dial pad beeping]
[line ringing]
- [Nazarian Sr., in Arabic] - [in English] Baba, it's Leon.

[tense music plays]
Wait, wait, wait, wait. Um, you know what?
I just realized that's not our numbers. Those are--
Uh, it's a video of, uh, me and my wife.
Our anniversary this past year. You-you know?
- No, I don't know. - Officer, please.
- Step back. - Okay. Okay.
[beeps]
[muffled moaning]
[woman on video] Oh, my God! Is it in? Is it in? Is it in?
[moaning]
Gonna hold on to this for a little while.
- We got your address. You can go. - Uh...
Officer Stevens,
you know when the devil has nothing better to do,
he likes to fuck his own children?
So, quit tickling my balls and give me back my property,
or you're gonna need a proctologist to remove the lawsuit I jam up your ass.
- Oh, fuck! [groaning] - [cell phone vibrates]
You're under arrest. You have the right to remain silent.
Anything you say can and will be held against you.
- On what charge? - Threatening an officer and child pornography.
There was nothing on that card!
- [Nazarian grunts] - Sir, it's the captain.
Yeah?
[Macavay] Andy, didn't I tell you to stay away from these guys?
- Yeah, well, he just took a shot at me. - Well, I just got a call
where your name was specifically mentioned.
- He's sitting on a-a load of kiddie porn. - You've seen it?
- I can smell it. - Look, you've got enough heat on you with the review board.
The last thing you need is the DA all over you,
which is an absolute certainty after the call I just got.
So, if you don't have enough to bring him in,
write him up and kick him loose.
- Let me put a tail on him right now. - That wasn't a request, Andy.
Let that guy and his kid go,
or I promise you, you will be the one on all fours.
[call ends]
[tense music plays]
Cut him loose.
Fuck you. Fuck you, you fucking pig!
You think that badge gives you a right to shit wherever you want?
- Get this shit off of me. - [car door closes]
Let's go.
Let's go! Come on!

[Rusanovschi] I'd like to be sure.
[judge, over phone] Well, a fake passport isn't gonna cut it.
Sir, I understand, but we've seen him
being taken in and out of that place multiple times.
Doesn't mean he's still there.
Sir, I know there's more of them in there.
- So, kick it to Homeland. - They already gave me the runaround.
These people have no criminal history whatsoever. What are we going on here?
[Rusanovschi] They're operating out of residential locations in rundown neighborhoods
through shell companies, and we've got evidence that they're harboring illegals.
[judge] Here's what I know. The board ruled on your boy Stevens this morning,
and he's looking at termination for that shit he pulled.
That is total bullshit. I was there.
- Request for a warrant denied. - Yes, sir.
I'd quit poking around. Catch my drift?
Copy that.

[in English] The U.S. Labor Department says
a McDonald's restaurant in Louisville, Kentucky
employed two 10-year-old children.
[reporter 1] Fifty children were illegally employed in slaughterhouses.
[reporter 2] Over 100 minors had been working in dangerous conditions.
160 people are facing charges in Ohio.
1,200 child labor law violations.
There are thousands of those workers
here in LA's Garment District.
[reporter 3] The disappearance of 85,000 migrant children.
100,000 children sold into labor trafficking and sex trafficking.
More than 250,000 immigrant children have entered the United States...
...in a multibillion-dollar migrant child trafficking operation.
The government knows they're here. How is this happening?
You know, I knew this was happening
in many countries around the world,
but I could never imagine it was happening
here in America.
I always thought America was about movies, music.
A place where dreams come true.
Not a place where you're forced to work in unsafe conditions
to make the products we buy every single day.
What I don't understand is that there are so many rich and famous people in America,
and they do so much good for so many people around the world.
And the politicians, they all agree.
Today, millions of people are living in bondage.
It ought to concern every person...
...to prevent slavery and human trafficking.
We have a responsibility...
...to combat human trafficking.
To actually solve the problem.
And still, nothing changes?
That's why I decided to make this movie.
And I worked really hard for a long time
learning what all these children go through.
How they're taken from their homes and what they do to survive.
So, if you're asking what happens to Jesús and the others,
I'm here to tell you that it depends on you.
There is no happy ending for these children
unless we become conscious of where we buy our clothes and food
and make the companies responsible.
So please tell everyone you know about this film,
because together, we have the power
to make sure this never happens again.
Thank you so much for your time,
and thank you for watching the movie.
