and showed us a deeper emotional side

in his directorial debut, Garden State.

[Jonathan] But nothing could have prepared any of us

for one of the biggest surprises...

I'm gonna put you where you need to go. I'm a director.

[Zach shouting] Come on out, boys!

So, you literally just bought the house.

-[Zach] Uh, he's in total shock. [laughs] -Yes! Um...

I've probably just bankrupted my family.

We're here to rescue you, brother.

-How soon till I get a sledgehammer? -[laughter]

[Zach] He's more than an assistant to me.

He's one of my best friends in the world.

What this renovation is gonna do

for his wife and his kids,

it's gonna impact all of their lives.

[Mark] One of the toilets exploded.

We knew electrical needed work. Roof needed work.

The windows were leaking.

-[shouting] I love it! -[nail gun clicks]

-[in a British accent] Look, Daddy, I made an arch. -[laughter]

[Drew] I am here with not-so-great news.

Oh, that's such bad news.

You're talking about over $50,000 of work that isn't even shown.

-And it will look perfect. -That's amazing.

[Mark] Oh, my goodness! This is incredible!

[Jonathan] I've always thought...

How long is it gonna be,

living in LA before I get chauffeured around by a big celebrity?

-[chuckles] -It's happening!

All right, I'm not guaranteeing you

a high rating for your driving.

-Yes, five stars. Five stars, please. -Well...

[Drew] I've been a huge fan of yours for a long time.

-Scrubs... was so my... sense of humor. -Thank you.

-Tell us what-- -I... I can't stand you.

-[laughs] -Yeah, yeah.

[Zach] I always wanted to be an actor.

I came out to LA, and I just could not get anything.

I... I just got so disillusioned

by the whole thing, and wasn't sure

that it... that it was for me.

And I spoke to my agent, and she said, "Don't give up yet.

Just go through one more pilot season."

And my very first audition, after that pep talk,

was for Scrubs.

And because I wanted to be a filmmaker as well,

and I had had the ideas for this movie floating around.

And so, that's when I sat down and actually, for the first time,

really put my... my first film, Garden State, together on, um, on the page.

-And what a first film, too. -What a film. Yeah.

-Thank you. -[Drew] Tell us your background

when it comes to renovations.

[Zach] I love renovation.

I did a major house renovation,

-um, on my house here in LA. It took two years... -Yeah.

...and I learned so much from... from doing that. But...

even as stressful as it was, I really...

I really enjoyed it. I got so excited. I loved going

at the end of every single day.

[Drew] Oh, you're that annoying homeowner?

-[laughter] -Yeah.

-"He's here again." -No, but I'm being a cheerleader.

I'm like, "Oh, my God! They put the studs in."

[Jonathan] You have your own cheerleader as well,

which is why we're even here.

Yeah.

Mark sounds like the most amazing... sidekick.

[Zach] He's more than an assistant to me. He's one

of my best friends in the world.

There's times when I'm... I've been depressed

and down, whether it's breakups or...

or things in my career

that didn't go how I wanted them to go, or deaths.

Uh... I've... I've lost some very important people to me in my life.

And Mark has been just right by side, as one of my best friends,

and he's the sweetest person.

So, that's why this is so special,

that the... the idea that I could give back to him...

-[Drew] Mmm. -...in an area where... where he really needs help.

And this is a guy, he has so much on his own plate.

He's got an amazing wife, two beautiful children.

-Is... Is Mark gonna be at the house? -Mark's gonna be at the house.

Here's the thing. He bought this house six weeks ago.

He told me he was gonna be here checking something out.

I told him I was gonna stop by,

just because I've never seen it. So, he has no idea,

obviously, that I'm coming with you guys and a camera crew.

This was a reach for him buying this house, financially.

But he did it, and he was so proud of himself,

and he was so excited.

-Once the high of getting the thing is over... -Yeah.

...then you get into, like,

"Oh... no. Look how much I have to do."

I think he really has been having some regrets,

like, "Did I buy a... a lemon?"

That is Mark's house right there.

-[Jonathan] Okay. -I'm gonna pull over

while you guys get out and hide.

-[Drew] Okay. -By the way, do me a favor.

[Zach] After Mark bought the house,

I could see that he was really stressed.

I thought getting a fridge or something

would maybe cheer him up or something. I...

I did want to get him something, obviously.

It was a bit of a tricky thing

to figure out how to... how to ambush Mark.

[whispering] All right. Are you guys ready?

-[Drew] Do we look good? -You look so beautiful.

I'm just so glad the... the brothers were able to just roll with it.

No, I'm gonna put you where you need to go. I'm the director. Okay?

-[faint laughter] -I want you to go right over here.

That's a good angle over my shoulder.

[Mark] Knock harder.

-Hi. -[Mark] Welcome.

-[tittering] -I know you're wondering why

I'm traveling with a camera crew,

-even though you know I'm a very fancy filmmaker. -[faint laughter]

But... stand there for a second.

You know how I told you I was gonna get you a housewarming present?

-Yeah? -And I think you're probably imagining,

-like, a refrigerator or something. -[laughs]

But instead, I got you... Come on out, boys!

-Surprise! -What's happening?

-[chuckling] How're you doing? -Oh, my... [chuckles]

[faint laughter]

-We, uh-- -Better than a fridge, I hope.

-You don't... [laughter] -I don't think I know what this is. [laughs]

[Zach] Do you know what's happening?

-Do you know what this is? -I... I think so.

-[raucous laughter] -We don't usually show up in bows.

-But, uh, you know... -[Zach] This is your housewarming present.

-Yeah. -[Mark] This is amazing!

-Better than a basket. -Better than a hot water heater.

So, you literally just bought the house?

-Uh, he's in total shock. -Yes. Um...

-Pardon me. -Collect yourself.

-It's okay. You're doing great. -I am. [laughter]

-[chuckles] -[laughs] Uh...

-Thank you. Um... -You're welcome.

Yes, we went through the whole process,

and, uh, it was our first home-buying experience.

What's crazy is, now that I'm in these first weeks of it,

it's... you're just being brought to your attention

how much work and things need to be done.

I told them that you've been walking around

-with your... your hands on your head a lot. -Yeah, I, kind of,

just sit in the open room with that binder

that's my, uh, inspection report, uh, 158 pages.

And I just look through it, and I think about all the things

that I need to do, and, um,

how I probably just bankrupted

-my family. -We're here to rescue you, brother.

What this renovation is gonna do for his wife and his kids,

and... and how it's going to impact all of their lives, I... I just feel

so lucky and grateful that I can do this.

I see the girls, in particular, a lot,

because Mark will always bring them by the house. I... I have a dog.

Uh, the girls go swimming in my pool,

and I... I do live a little vicariously through Mark,

and... and learn a lot from what a good father he is.

You've been really supportive of this buying process,

but this is... this is really next level.

When you start this job, you don't exactly know how it's gonna develop,

and it's just sort of developed as, like, the extension of...

-of family. Oh, and-- -He's my emergency contact.

-Yeah. [laughs sheepishly] -I'm not married, so... he's my emergency contact.

So, when you find somebody that you, kind of, get along with that well,

uh, you just develop a personal relationship where you...

you know one another. And he knows my family,

and I know his family.

And we celebrate highs together and support each other through lows.

And now, this, I just... I don't... [titters] This is...

-You're handling the shock very well. I'm very impressed. -This is the new... This is

the new benchmark of something crazy.

So, why don't we get inside and have a look at the place?

-Yes. Let's dive in. -Let's see what we're working with today.

You got, all of a sudden, even more stressed.

-How soon till I get a sledgehammer? -[Mark laughs]

[Jonathan] Oh, this is the place. Nice.

So, I see what you're talking about,

with the idea that you thought you were getting something a little nicer,

and then once you started digging in.

Because these are cheap materials.

-[Mark] Right. -They've just painted everything white.

-This home will be what? From the '30s? -'30s. Yeah.

So, the original house was a lot smaller.

This was the living room.

And actually, there was probably a fireplace at some point.

-[Mark] I know. -Yeah.

No, I feel like, slowly over the years,

that, that... this house has, kind of, had the soul kind of taken out of it.

In the first week after we closed,

one of the toilets exploded.

We knew electrical needed work,

we knew the roof needed work.

Hot water heater, the windows were leaking,

and all these different things.

-What is with the weird layout? -Yeah!

[Zach] This all looks like Ms. Pac-Man.

-[Drew] Yeah. -[Jonathan] Yeah, exactly.

-[laughter] -[mimicking beeping in game] I... I don't get it.

-Where... -[Jonathan] Yeah, this is a terrible thing.

[Drew] The footprint here is pretty big,

but you have so little cabinetry.

It's one shelf, un-adjustable.

-Yeah. -Uh... So, my wife and I have been, like,

contemplating, like, "Where do we put food?

Where will glasses go?"

-I don't know. -Yeah, I wonder what the previous owner, like...

Where do they put food?

[Jonathan] Is this the main problem area?

You've got this great space down here, too,

but the tile's... kinda... dated.

[Mark] It kind of feels like a converted garage.

Did you tour this with your wife?

So, we toured it together the day we were leaving for Christmas,

to go home to see our families. And so, it was very fast.

And it was emotional.

And price point was decent,

and I just kept trying to justify this, like,

"That'll be fine." Then the day comes,

and you get the keys and you come in,

and I'm like, "I don't know how fine anything is."

The one thing I did like about this house was,

it was unique in that the kitchen was, sort of, in the middle.

And it was, kind of, the center space that you went through.

So, just any place where we can be,

maybe the kids can sit and do their homework,

you can serve a meal.

Like, in our condo, the smallest room was the kitchen.

My wife loves to cook. She loves to bake. We...

But we like to be a family when we can,

and we've had no room or opportunity to do that.

It's one thing to feel,

uh, the accomplishment of buying your own house

for the the first time.

Are you okay taking off and letting us talk about the property a bit?

I really got to go?

And now, all of a sudden, it's, like,

"Oh, my God, this could be something...

really special that we just love."

It's a surprise. You got to get the hell out of here.

-Thank you! -And we'll talk about you.

All right. What do you want to see happen,

knowing how much he loves to cook and his wife loves to cook,

-what flow would you like to see? -[Zach] I think the kitchen

is the main thing, just a really beautiful, functional kitchen.

This is so awkward.

So, some layout, obviously,

without this weird Ms. Pac-Man, uh, grid.

[Jonathan] You could probably do

-a furniture-piece island. -[Drew] Yeah.

[Jonathan] So, you have the prep space somewhere for the kids to sit.

But you won't get a full island,

because it's gonna be too narrow.

Another thing he brought up, uh, that he didn't mention,

was that the washer-dryer are in the garage.

-[Drew] Oh, I see that. -And he's gotta do a lot of laundry with the kids.

So, I'd love to find a place, I don't know where,

where we could, um, uh, put the washer dryer somewhere in the house.

-We'll have to explore the footprint a little bit. -Yeah.

So, there's a bedroom over here.

-And then I saw this from all the way to over here. - [Drew] To over here. Yeah.

This is a Spanish-style home.

But over the years, they've just eliminated all the character.

And this, to me, is like they're trying to fake it for character.

Now, and this is something I don't know.

Is this a Spanish-style house detail, this arch?

No. It would be more of a rounded arch.

[Zach] And the flooring, I got to tell you, the mismatch,

that's something I really would like to try and change.

[Drew] This is just a blank slate,

like, this is so boring down here.

-Why are there so many receptacles? -Yeah, it... So, this is...

-I... Yeah. -Look at how many outlets are in this room.

-[Jonathan] I have concerns about this. -Look at how... Look around!

-[Jonathan] You have... -[Drew] Blank plates, blank plates.

-[Zach] That's a bad sign? Blank plates? -...It's a bad...

It's a bad sign.

Look at the height of these receptacles.

This was not done by a professional.

Oh, my gosh.

They've literally run their wire in the ground.

-[Zach] Oh, no. -This whole way, look at that.

-[Zach] That doesn't seem like it's to code. -We'll check it out.

-All right. One more thing. Can I make one more request? -[Drew] Yes.

In the pilot episode with Brad Pitt, which I loved,

there was a book, a hidden bookcase door.

I'm a real sucker for a hidden, uh, door... bookcase door.

So, if there's any possible way

we could find a place to work,

-a hidden bookcase door... -I have an idea for your secret passage.

-What if-- -Go ahead.

-I'm listening. -...What if...

Picture this opening has moved over here...

-Yeah. -...so this is just the wall.

If we square this off, we can use this space for laundry,

because now, it's sort of an unused space.

But what if that just looks like a bookshelf?

-That would be so cool. -What if it's just a secret hidden laundry?

[whispering loudly] Yes, please!

-Secrets! -Yes!

-[chuckles whimsically] -Okay.

So, they've already given notice at their rental,

and his kids have five more weeks in school.

So, uh, the ideal timeline, if do-able,

and I know no one could do this in real life other than you guys,

but five weeks would be the ideal time for him to move back in.

Five weeks is tight,

especially for a total reconfig of the kitchen, but...

-That's good. -...I think it's... I think

-it's feasible. -I'm gonna be helping, guys.

-Eight weeks. -[laughter] Eight weeks, yeah.

I really just thought I was gonna buy them an appliance or something.

If you're good, let's jump in tomorrow. We'll start demolition.

I'm so stoked. I... I wish we were starting now.

So, the fact that I get to do that and make it more beautiful and...

and special for his family, is... is so fun.

I... I won't sleep tonight, but I'm ready. [chuckles]

I'm quitting my regular job.

I really like smashing stuff

[Zach] Oh, I love this.

[Zach] I got to say, that it's a lot harder breaking up that tile floor

than, uh, than slamming

a sledgehammer on granite.

That feels good.

-Yeah. -[tiles clattering]

[Zach] I actually didn't know the... how much I was

going to be able to really participate.

So, I'm glad I was allowed to do a lot of demo.

[upbeat music playing]

[Jonathan] It's day 3, and with demo done,

we're not wasting any time roughing in the new plumbing

and replacing all that old illegal electrical work.

We're not just adding style and functionality to the kitchen,

we're giving Mark and his family peace of mind

that everything has been done right.

While work steams ahead inside,

I need Zach to sign off on some gorgeous new finishes Mark will love.

-This is my favorite part. -Uh, really? 'Cause I feel like,

the demolition, you were a madman.

I love that, too, but I love looking at these things.

I... I get so obsessed with finishes.

Well, you did all the finishes for your place, right?

Yeah, I got... I really went down a wormhole,

like, obsessively picking out samples, and...

It's kind of, like, directing a movie, actually.

Every single second, someone's coming to you with a question.

That's why I think I... I like design along with filmmaking,

and they... they really do overlap.

-Well, let's start with floors, because I think-- -Yes.

...you're going to see the floors at the front,

-and then carry them all the way through. -I love it.

-I love the white oak. -How light would you want to go?

-How dark would you want to go? -No, I don't like dark.

And one of the things I worry about

with houses, is how... how dark they get.

I love this. This is the color tone that I have in my house.

-[Jonathan] This tone? -This is really... It's... It's warm.

And it's not too dark,

and it just... it creates a really cozy vibe.

We could actually do the lower area,

because that is a nice big room.

-Mmm-hmm. -It's more impressive, the family room.

We could do that in a herringbone pattern.

-I'd love that. -Yeah, and so now,

-it feels like its own space. -Yeah.

[Jonathan] Moving into the kitchen,

we can step it up

into a beautiful two-tone kitchen.

-Do you think he would like some wood-toned cabin? -Absolutely.

-Okay. -Well, I'll need your help picking

which shade you think goes best with the floor.

-This might be too close, right? -This... So...

Yeah, you want something that's not gonna clash a little bit.

-I feel like this is a more natural fit. -Okay, I like that.

[Jonathan] I just wanted to figure out if he wants to do something bold,

or if he wants to do something more neutral.

Um, I'd be afraid to do something this bold.

Although, I do love this color,

I...I worry it's a... it's... might be a tiny bit loud.

I feel nervous making that choice for him.

-[chuckles] -But I... this is really, uh, this is real...

or something in the spirit of this, is really pretty.

And again, keeping everything light...

-Yeah. -...which I think is really important.

And then for the countertops,

we could do a nice stone like this...

-I love that. -...very natural contrast

to the elegance of the perimeter stone.

All right. Now, one thing I know, he doesn't...

he doesn't like shiny.

-[Jonathan] Okay. -I think that he would say

this looks, um, too... too perfect.

He likes the texture.

-Yeah, uh, I prefer honed as well. -That's so pretty.

Oh, my God, look. Compared to what's in there right now,

-that's incredible. -Oh, yeah,

it's gonna be absolutely gorgeous--

there was, like, some Spanish tile,

and on the steps coming up.

Would you want to do something that feels a little more artisanal?

For me, it may clash a tiny bit.

-Yeah. -I think we stay with this.

[Zach] Design is a lot like filming.

I think that's why I'm so drawn to it in my own life.

On the giant scale, that's picking locations

and hiring the lead actors, and...

And then on the micro scale, it's, uh,

you know, choosing the fabric that's gonna be in the curtains.

-Do you like that? -Yeah, I do.

[Jonathan] With these gorgeous new finishes

and a more functional kitchen layout,

we'll lean into the home's original character

with Spanish-style archways.

We'll add light, durable, engineered oak hardwood throughout

that will withstand everything a busy family of four throws at it.

Mark desperately needed kitchen storage,

so we're including rich oak lower cabinets

and two large pantries that play off the soft white uppers

and give the space character.

Paired with panel-ready appliances,

the Calacatta-inspired porcelain countertops and backsplash

will not only wow for guests,

they're easier to maintain for a family with young kids.

There isn't room for a traditional island,

but we do have space for a narrow custom piece

that Mark's girls can sit out for homework, or as a breakfast bar.

While family meals can be shared at the family dining-room table

that boasts a trendy space-saving banquet.

This, coupled with cozy furniture and plenty of space,

will make the perfect place for Mark, his wife,

and their two girls to enjoy some quality family time.

The hidden bookshelf door Zach requested will tuck away

a new stack of a washer-dryer combo

that no one will ever know was there.

Look at that. You just designed an incredible kitchen--

-I'm so proud of us. -...while enjoying some incredible pizza.

[Zach] The good thing about, um, eating

a pizza slice this small,

-is that it makes you look like you have large hands. -Yeah, it's true.

[upbeat music playing]

[drilling]

I've never seen you so focused.

I'm, I... Uh, it's very, um, meditative.

I thought you would want to do, like, the nailing,

'cause the nailing is, like, the rough work. Uh, it's... Whatever.

And the nails is... This is the precision work,

and you've never done it before...

-No. -...and you're literally doing it perfectly.

Thank you. It's, like... It's, like, uh, it reminds me

when you're coloring as a... as a kid,

or... or doing one of those adult coloring books,

-where you, like, really have to stay in the line. -[shouting] Stay in the line!

Yeah, I've, I... I pretty much stayed on the line.

[Jonathan] When it's done,

this alone, I think, is going to give

very authentic character back to this house,

that the character that was stolen before.

Because the house did not feel Spanish

-when you stepped inside. -Yeah.

-Should I finish cutting that? -Yeah.

-If you finish, I'll hold it so that it's easier. -Okay.

[drilling]

-[Drew] Whoa! Hard at work! -[drilling stops]

-I mean, that's some precision work. -[exclaims in triumph]

-That is-- -Look at that. Not bad for my first time.

[Drew] No, that's pretty great.

Um... I am here with not-so-great news,

-unfortunately. -Don't yuck our yum.

-I know, I know. -We were doing so good with this.

But we were having so much fun.

-Why do you have bad-- -Well, I'll wait on that news then.

Hey, this is really great, guys. What is... What is it

-you're doing, then? -What is it?

Well, now you have us worried about the bad news.

So, the back of the house here,

I just came from the city,

you know, there is one edition that was done,

and then another edition that was done.

They never closed the permits.

Th this house doesn't have a Certificate of Occupancy.

-What? -So, that means...

we're not gonna be allowed to finish our work

and finish our permits

unless we go in and retroactively fix

all the other issues that were part of this building.

Oh, that's such bad news.

It sounds like they never had their final inspection,

probably because they knew some of the work wouldn't pass,

and then they just let it go.

Ah. So, we have to open up the walls?

Well, this is the issue.

We have a tight timeline already

of five weeks to get this done,

the kitchen, all the work we're doing.

This means that we're gonna be over that,

because there's no way we're gonna be able

to fix all the issues here and close those permits,

plus do the work that we're looking at doing within five weeks.

Once we open the wall, the inspector could come and be like,

"This is total crap." It could get to a point

where we would have to strip this all back

to the studs down at the back end--

[Zach] The whole back of the house?

-[Drew] Yeah. -...if he's not satisfied with what we see

when we open up the walls.

Oh, that's horrible. That really is bad news.

It's gonna be fresh room. But the... the biggest thing is,

I know the kids are out of school... in a few weeks,

and they've already given notice at their rental.

-They're not going to have a place to stay. -Can they extend--

Can they extend the rental?

No, but they can stay at my house if they have to.

I mean, we have to... I'm... Obviously, we can't do all this work

and not make it safe and perfect.

I mean, if you're okay with them staying at your house,

maybe let Mark know. Because I'm telling you right now, there is no way

they're getting in here within five weeks.

God, we were having so much fun

building arches and you really ruined it.

Gosh, what a what a bad buzz.

[Zach] I'm just so grateful that the brothers

are gonna help me deal with this situation.

I don't care how long it takes.

If they need a place to stay, they can stay with me.

[Drew] We've had some good news and some bad news

about the illegal addition

The city says that we can keep their footprint,

but it has to be upgraded

to meet California Building code.

[Jonathan] That means opening walls up from the inside

and outside of the house so they can be reinforced

to meet California's strict earth quake and wind shear regulations.

Inspectors also discovered

that the foundation of the addition

was not done correctly, so we're required to underpin everything properly.

[Drew] All of this is adding four weeks

to our original five week schedule.

This delay is out of our control,

but now it's on us to do everything humanly possible

to stay on schedule and get this family in their home.

[Jonathan] Meanwhile, we're forging ahead

with the new framing in the kitchen,

but we can't close up the walls

until the city inspects all the new work.

We've already rewired this entire kitchen,

we're running new plumbing, new gas...

I mean, everything we're doing is totally to code.

Let's get the cabinets in here

and let's see how much space we have for an island.

-Okay, great. -All right.

You can't walk in and not drop your jaw already.

And it's nowhere near done.

But just looking at the archways, looking at the layout,

it's just it's night and day.

Action plan.

Zach, you wanna grab that roll of tape

and also, of course, with the girls,

you don't want them to run into it and, and hurt themselves.

Not only does it give you more room around the corners,

but as you come into the space, it just flows better.

I have a dumb question.

We only have 32 inches on that side, which is pretty tight.

That's really tight.

Even if we do, like, double doors here

I don't think we can go any bigger.

It sounds really cool, and it sounds very bespoke.

[Jonathan] It's been four weeks of meticulous, backbreaking work

to get Mark's home up to code.

Outside, the work continues underpinning the foundation.

Inside, the city inspectors

have signed off on the kitchen,

and we're finally closing up the walls and laying flooring.

[Drew] Zach has lent an extra hand every step of the way

to make sure that Mark and his family

can get back into their new home as soon as possible.

And today he's jumped at the chance

of leaving all that dust and power tools behind.

I'm so excited about a field trip.

I love, like going to antique shops.

I love, like hunting.

I really know from what?

Mark is appreciated in my own house,

and he likes just a bit of you know, eclecticness.

Something a little bit different.

[Drew] Today is all about finding that one piece

we can transform into the bespoke kitchen island

Zach knows Mark will love.

We have a bunch of different furniture pieces here.

we could put a stone top on whatever we do.

It'll complement the kitchen nicely,

where you can have room for legs underneath it.

There's room for storage and there's room for stools.

Yeah. And so I would say we do something-- A stone top.

I mean, we could do a porcelain as well.

Zero maintenance.

Really, really durable for the kids.

We wanna have that, sort of, a function.

The stools will have the overhang.

You know, in reality, we could bolt the two ends.

We could actually do a full detail

floor to counter that is brass.

-[Zach] That would be so cool. -That would actually look amazing,

especially with the, the light colors throughout.

I love it, and I just think it's cool.

This is not a detail you see very often, These sliding out like that.

-No. -I think the kids would think it's cool, too.

[Drew] Those will be their seats.

Yeah, they'll probably pick, like, which one's theirs.

All kids do that. Yeah, they're gonna, they're gonna--

We can put a little plaque that says their names on them.

It's a conversation piece.

I really love that we're giving them really cool moments.

Mark's gonna have that with the bookcase storage.

He's gonna have that with the, with the island.

There's so many little moments that are, that are unique.

I want this thing in my house.

Let's build it, and then I'm gonna take it.

[Jonathan] After weeks of delays,

the kitchen is finally taking shape

with stunning new two tone cabinets.

We're maximizing every square inch of the space,

to give Mark the storage he desperately needed.

[Drew] In the family room,

we're replacing the old sliding door with new French doors

that open the space to the garden

and allow Mark and his wife

sightlines of the girls while playing in the backyard.

The idea that they can open these doors, come out and play in the yard.

I mean, it's, it's a dream. It's a dream for him.

[Jonathan] In the meantime, work continues underpinning

the foundation of the illegal addition.

It has been meticulous, painstaking work.

So we have to do it from the inside here.

So we've got the floor ripped up in the bedroom,

and we're gonna basically pour the new footings there.

Along here and along this backside here,

we can do it from the outside,

but it means we have to cut the driveway.

-Oh, my goodness. -Not only from a time standpoint,

there's like another 50 grand of work already

that we're-- Just to do that stuff

over and above racing to get all of this done...

They would have never been able to do

what you all have done for them.

I mean, you're talking about over $50,000 of work that isn't even shown.

-Yeah. -It's just, it's just permit structural stuff.

Well, not to mention all the stuff,

and, and every idea you've brought forward

-has been amazing. The flow in here. -Awesome.

They will be happier in this home

than the way it was before.

No doubt, because now it actually makes life easier.

He's gonna be so thrilled.

I think whatever is in his imagination

is nowhere near the level of what we've done.

To be honest, I'm just so happy

that I have the Property Brothers to help me with this.

I mean, this is such

a cluster...blank.

[Mark] I didn't expect to be this anxious.

This has been like planning

a surprise party for nine weeks.

[Jonathan] After weeks of opening walls and digging trenches,

it is a relief to see these gorgeous finishes

that Zach picked out finally being installed.

The porcelain countertops are going in

and we're running the slab up the wall as a backsplash.

In a tighter, narrow space like this,

the seamless look will give the illusion of more space.

In the family room Zach and I are working

on a very special surprise for Mark.

There's a part of me

that really appreciates your love of secret doors.

I love a secret door.

I, I really-- I don't have a bookcase door in my house,

but I always dreamed I would one day have one.

So I'm so happy that I get to give one to Mark.

The guy does so much laundry. I don't have kids,

but I watched this guy doing so much laundry.

He does so much laundry he's sneaking his laundry in

at my house and he thinks I don't notice.

This guy's laundry is like a side job for the poor guy.

He works for me during the day,

on the side he's a laundry man.

He owes me money for hot water and soap.

[Drew] It's taken more time and a lot of extra hard work and patience to get here.

But we are just one day away

from handing the keys back to Mark.

And this time around,

the keys come with peace of mind.

Everything has been built to code.

[Jonathan] Yeah, and as satisfying as it is

for us to see it all come together,

that pales in comparison

to how excited Mark and his family must feel right now.

They've never lived in this house before.

So they bought it.

And then we came in and surprised them. So...

This is gonna be a good surprise.

Unlike the surprise they got when they found out

that none of this was permitted,

it didn't have an occupancy permit.

Yeah, I haven't had a single night's sleep since the project started.

It's so shocking, having seen what it where it was,

when you come in and just-- It's just really magical.

Of all the things he was daydreaming about

it was to have his washer and dryer in the house.

So he's gonna freak out.

And I think we've got to, like, trick him and say, "Oh, we weren't able to do it.

We only had room for a bookcase."

[both chuckle]

And then I go, "Oh, wait, I forgot."

Here, gotta lift from underneath and then just pull it out.

Okay.

There's always a balance when you're doing a house,

I know in my own experience,

where you, you don't want it to be too monotonous.

I do love a good round table.

Yeah, this is actually the perfect fit for this room.

[Zach] But you also don't wanna overdo it and, and, and, and have it

look like things clash.

So obviously I trust the brothers to know,

you know, what's the right mix of, of the palate.

I feel like we're pretty good.

-All right-- -What's the plan?

Well, I'm gonna pick him up, I think.

Should we have the red bows on again?

[Drew laughs]

I don't I don't wanna do that to you.

-No. -You've done such amazing work.

and I really got to participate, which was so fun.

You took me at a really vulnerable spot in my life,

and you were like, "We got this.

We're gonna take care of this."

And then you made this into something that is Zach Braff fancy.

My God, this is the most Zach Braff thing in the house.

Just so you know, this is a one of a kind custom piece.

So Zach and I went shopping at an antique place.

And we found the bench underneath.

And then Zach wanted to add a bit more of your style,

so we wrapped it with a brass,

put a new travertine top on it.

[Zach] They were so clever in finding out,

figuring how to put an island in there.

It's so special, it's bespoke.

that went into making that kitchen.

it's integrated into the stone.

This is amazing. I don't know how you do that.

The original history of this house,

This is like the most kind,

and it's not just, it's not just for me.

It's for my family.

And the fact that all these things are being fixed,

that is, a million dollars to me.

I forgot this was gonna be this good

because you did this and took this on is immeasurable.

so as to show that the change in the step.

He's a designer.

[Jonathan] It makes this room feel special,

which it is, because you have taller ceilings in here,

you've got great space with tons of natural light.

[Zach] All of your kid's art and pictures on the wall here.

-Gallery wall? -Yeah, gallery wall.

You love that photo of you and Zach. Yeah, that's good.

-Yeah. -I made the wall.

[Mark] That banquette dining table

is just gonna be so cool for a 100 different things

besides just eating.

So, Mark, I know that you really

wanted to put the washer and dryer in the house.

That was one of your asks.

We tried to figure out where to put it, but there just wasn't a spot.

But we were able to make

this cool little bookcase for this moment.

Just kidding!

and to have an opportunity

are excited to be in your space

and you feel like it's,

it's something I'm proud of.
