[Episode 8]

[Lai Mansion]

The worse you people fight,

the more at ease I am.

Where are you going?

Jia'er is sick and wants his father by his side.

Let go!

You always use Jia'er to seek attention.

- You think I can't tell? - I just won't let you see that woman.

- You think I can't tell? - I just won't let you see that woman.

What a shrew. A jealous shrew.

You're living off me.

How dare you be rude and unreasonable to me?

- Stop! - Get lost.

What are you doing?

Madam Shen is here.

Nasty women. Just you wait!

Step aside!

Move along, move along, move along!

Everyone disperse!

Fourth Sister.

What are you doing here?

Are you here to see me ridiculed?

W-Why would I do that?

You married well and now you're making a fool of me.

I don't need your help. Go away!

Clerk Yan Xing of the Ministry of Justice is here to pay respects.

Grand Empress Dowager, Madam Shen is here.

May you be well, Grand Empress Dowager.

Spare the formalities.

You contributed greatly to solving the murder case.

I would love to reward you with something.

But I couldn't think of anything.

Let's hear it from you.

What reward would you like?

Grand Empress Dowager, I do not wish for a reward.

But please bestow upon me an oral decree.

Very well.

Tell me about it.

Grand Empress Dowager,

from now on, please kindly address me as Clerk Yan instead of Madam Shen.

You have such insight and ambition at such a young age.

I really appreciate it.

Our court appoints the virtuous and capable, regardless of gender.

Women don't have to rely on their husbands.

We can fight for a career path on our own.

Approved.

Thank you, Grand Empress Dowager!

Forgive me for speaking boldly.

All Six Ministries have female officials,

but they mostly take on cleaning and archiving tasks.

In the Ministry of Justice,

female officials can't work on cases like male officials.

You see.

I am a woman, as well.

Therefore, I know how much we have to go through

to stand as tall as men.

If I can sit on this throne,

then the female officials have every right to work on cases.

Madam Xu, draft an imperial edict on my behalf.

From now on, all the female officials

shall enjoy the same rights as male officials.

Your Majesty is truly wise.

Clerk Yan,

from now on, you're free to conduct investigations

like your male colleagues.

Thank you, Grand Empress Dowager!

Sixth Miss.

Marshal Xu.

Is the ministry head here?

He hasn't been feeling well and has taken a sick leave.

Is there something urgent?

It's not exactly urgent.

It's just somewhat shocking.

How so?

Regarding Liang Chenzhong's chronic poisoning,

you told me to look into the people around him.

I looked into it and followed the leads.

Guess who it led me to?

It led me to the owner of the Tongming Hall, Rong Zhui.

Don't move.

Behave.

Dripping Water Guanyin.

- Take her away. - Go.

I brought some tonic for your mother.

The bottom one is for you.

You suffered in prison for nothing

and lost a lot of weight.

Thanks for looking after me.

The prison guards didn't give me a hard time.

And it was quiet in the cell.

Therefore, I came up with many ideas to improve siege weapons.

I know turning myself in was a stupid move.

But no matter what, I couldn't let my mother suffer any more misfortunes.

Thank you for discovering the truth...

and clearing our names.

This case may have been closed,

but we still haven't caught the person with the poison.

Your family is not considered innocent yet.

A-Are you still going to arrest my mother?

- How can you arrest me? - Take him away.

Great Chief.

Xu Xiangren and Madam arrested Liang Jiren.

- They looked into the Tongming Hall? - That's right.

They have arrested Rong Zhui, the owner of Tongming Hall.

That's quick.

Should I take some people to stop them?

What for?

She was just granted authority.

Let her show off a bit.

Understood.

Third Young Master Liang,

I've been visiting you quite frequently.

Besides sharing Grand Empress Dowager's burden,

I also have something else in mind.

Now, I've discovered what I've wanted to know.

And someone has arrested the suspects for me.

The nine sons of the dragon have different characters.

The poisoning has nothing to do with you and your mother.

The second branch has nothing to do with the main branch.

Do your job.

Live up to the Grand Empress Dowager's expectations.

[Ministry of Justice]

You poisoned Liang Chenzhong with Dripping Water Guanyin?

That's right. I did it.

His eldest son was nothing but a scoundrel.

If he remained alive,

his father was bound to die at his hands one day.

Besides, I already carry his father's child.

Naturally, I have to plan for the future.

Master, this way, please.

A batch of new dancers arrived.

Would you like to take a look?

Sensible.

- Nice! - Young Master Liang.

I have found a real beauty for you. [Liang Chenzhong]

Lan'er, come here.

- What a beauty. Come here. - Young Master.

Young Master Liang, please have some tea.

I had no choice.

That wayward son of mine was either

out there gambling or visiting brothels.

Once he ran out of money,

he came to threaten me for more.

He almost drained my savings dry.

Otherwise, I would not have done that.

Besides, I have an unborn child.

Shouldn't I do something for him?

[Prison of Ministry of Justice]

So, Rong Zhui got pregnant.

So he decided to get rid of his eldest son.

That's right.

I've seen all kinds of strange cases as an inspector,

but I've never heard of a father poisoning his eldest son on purpose.

I didn't expect that a tiger would actually devour its own cub.

People are truly unpredictable.

Great Chief, what brings you here?

Minister Liang, don't you remember?

The Grand Empress Dowager has entrusted this murder case solely to me.

However, I'm really surprised by your ruthless measures.

If I had any other options, I wouldn't have…

I had no choice.

Even a tiger does not eat its cubs.

How come you simply "had no choice" when it came to your son?

Great Chief, why are you mocking me?

I did try to murder my own child.

But what about you? You reported your own father.

We are clearly the same type of people.

Among all the accusations that convicted my father,

one said that he had leaked a weapon design to the enemy.

That weapon design was drawn by your younger brother.

I knew it.

You've been hanging out with that silly nephew of mine.

I thought you valued talents

and saw my silly nephew as an inseparable friend.

It turns out that you've been suspecting us.

My goodness, why are you here?

Why did you come at this hour?

I came to see you.

No one saw you, right?

I don't know.

We'll be in trouble if someone saw you.

This is what you're saying at a time like this?

Your son must have figured something out.

That's why you harbored the intent to silence him.

If you had found anything solid,

you wouldn't have come to question me here.

Even if you bring this to the Grand Empress Dowager,

I still have nothing to say.

In that case,

your affection for the unborn child is nothing but a disguise.

If you promise to

look after my unborn child,

I may try to recall the event.

Perhaps I might recall something.

You are not in a position to negotiate terms with me.

Minister Liang, have you ever heard of a punishment called inch-torture?

With each cut, the criminal will shed exactly 36 drops of blood.

In three days,

a total of 360 cuts are made while the prisoner is alive.

Shen Du, I am a high official.

I am guilty of attempted murder.

And… And I was just an accomplice.

I don't deserve to die.

Y-You shall not act recklessly.

Act recklessly?

Do you really think people call me "White Ghost" for no reason?

Do you really think...

you can leave this place alive?

H-How dare you—

This is the first cut.

I have nothing to do these days,

so I might as well keep you company.

I confess. I confess.

I got drunk back then

and leaked my younger brother's weapon design.

After what happened, I was too scared to confess.

Back then, your father was close to my brother.

Besides, he had been convicted of treason.

I just seized the opportunity and blamed it on him.

Chenzhong had found out about it by chance

and had kept extorting money from me.

I couldn't take it anymore. I simply couldn't.

Great Chief, back in the day,

your father was convicted of treason with solid evidence.

With one less conviction,

you still can't overturn the case.

So it was you, indeed.

Then, I will overturn the convictions one by one.

I do not seek to be renowned.

I only wish to have a clear conscience and not let the people down.

[Shen Bingzhu, Shen's father] How can I collude with you?

No way.

Don't say that I haven't warned you.

The nail that sticks out gets hammered down.

If you don't ally with me,

you will be walking into a fire with no return.

I receive my wage from His Majesty.

Naturally, I shall share his burden even at the cost of my life.

By heavenly decree, here comes the edict.

The criminal, Shen Bingzhu, secretly corresponded with the enemy,

burned down our army's granary, leaked the weapon designs,

and colluded with the enemy.

[Gao Youning, Shen's mother] He shall be executed.

The male members of the Shen family are to be executed.

The women and children are to be imprisoned.

Convey the message widely.

[Late father Shen Bingzhu's tablet]

Father, all these years,

I've never given up seeking justice for all our family members.

But I'm still clueless...

about who that woman is.

Is she an enemy or a friend?

Today, at least I managed to prove...

that you were framed for leaking the weapon design.

Father, rest assured.

I will find that woman one day.

And I will gather...

all the evidence I need.

Great Chief.

The Ministry of Justice and the inspectors are celebrating tonight.

- Why do I care? - Great Chief.

You are always right.

- Cheers. - You've worked hard.

Drink up, and I'll fill it up.

- Let's get wasted. - Can you drink?

- Over there. - Come on, let's go.

Come on, Brother Meng, I toast to you.

Dig in.

You've worked hard.

Cheers.

I almost forgot. Your letter. It came to the ministry.

So happy?

Chi is coming to Xiang'an. She has asked to meet with me.

That's great.

I've heard you mention Chi so many times.

The ministry received so many case-solving letters from commoners.

Only you were silly enough to read the letters one by one.

I laughed at you back then.

I didn't expect you to meet such a close pen pal.

I am so jealous.

I still remember her first letter sent from Jiangnan.

The letterhead featured gilded inlays. And it had a fragrance.

She even put flower petals in the envelope.

I am so jealous.

I really want to meet such a talented young lady.

She must be a beauty.

Sorry. She only asked to meet with me.

Annoying.

They really can drink.

- Dig in. - Have some grapes. Here.

Sixth Miss. Come on.

I truly admire your investigative methods.

I toast to you.

Brother Xu, I'm not very good at drinking.

It's okay. You'll get better at it.

You'll gradually discover the mystery in the wine.

Cheers.

You'd better behave.

Want to be arrested again?

Great Chief.

Shen Du, why are you here?

Great Chief, please have a seat.

Did I say I wouldn't come?

Great Chief. Great Chief.

Your esteemed presence is such an honor for me.

Let me toast to you.

Please enjoy.

Come on, Great Chief. I toast to you.

That was unexpected. The Great Chief can really hold his liquor.

Great Chief, I toast to you.

Cheers.

He can hold his liquor?

I'm not drunk.

I'm very sober.

All right. You're very sober.

You don't believe me?

Find someone to fight with me.

Now that you mention it, I really do have someone I want to beat up.

Let's do it!

Thank you for coming, Great Chief.

Mind your steps.

Jing Lin, bring the lantern.

What for?

Who beats someone up with a lantern in hand?

Let's go.

I can beat someone up,

but not without a lantern.

Yes, you can.

Look at me. I am your lantern. Let's go.

Jing Lin, let's go. Let's go.

Let's go. Let's go.

- Be careful. - Sixth Miss, be careful.

- Goodbye, Great Chief. - Be careful.

- Be careful. - Chuichui, let's keep drinking.

Who wants to drink? I want to eat.

Be careful.

Jing Lin, come here and hold him.

He's too heavy.

Let's go.

Great Chief, there's a staircase.

- Another one. - Be careful.

Up.

Stand still. Be careful.

Who's there? Let me out. Who is it?

Who is it?

I'm going to beat him up. Wait here for me.

I'll go.

Okay. Go ahead.

Who's there?

- Let me out. - So wasted.

Who is it?

Who is it? What do you want?

Buddha absorbs the sin and only kills the cheaters.

So many unfaithful lovers are buried at Ximing Temple.

Someone still favors the lover and neglects his family.

It's just a minor punishment as a warning.

If you dare to do it again, I will gouge out your heart and bury you.

I dare not anymore. I dare not anymore.

So this is how the drunk White Ghost looks.

Take your sober Great Chief back to the mansion. Let's go.

- Watch your steps. - Go.

Be careful.

Who was it? So ruthless. Who was it?

[Shen Mansion]

I didn't expect the mighty White Ghost to get drunk so easily.

Aren't you a tough guy?

The corpses are easier to carry than you.

Thank you.

No problem.

Bringing back a drunk roommate is no big deal. You're welcome.

Detention center.

♫ May you also look up to see the brilliant stars and moon ♫

So you knew all along.

I thought you had forgotten.

♫ The winter in warm memories ♫

Are you all right?

♫ Never mind the destined solitary fate ♫

- It's from the new preserved fruits shop. - Who is there?

I have to go. I'll comb your hair tomorrow.

♫ The ice and snow slowly melting ♫

This is really tasty. Try it.

- Let her go. - Let go.

- Let her go. Let her go. - Brother Shen Du.

- Let her go. - I will find a way to get you out.

Wait for me.

Madam Xu.

Thank you.

♫ Love is pure and originally flawless ♫

♫ Let the vast universe change ♫

♫ Let's spend our time together ♫

Shen Du.

Shen Du, you're so annoying.

Good morning, Madam.

Good morning, Madam.

Madam, please have breakfast.

You…

Morning.

I got drunk and did something improper.

It's all right.

Last night—

Nothing happened.

Sister.

Qi Yeyun.

Sister.

What happened to your forehead?

Who hurt you?

Was it you? Did you hit my sister?

No, no.

I drank too much last night...

and bumped my head.

Right! Why did you come here?

I came to deliver something for my lady.

Your lady?

Lu Chuichui.

This is her treasured Floral Essence.

Have it with water to relieve hangover headaches. She sent me to deliver it.

Chuichui is so considerate?

But when did you start working for the Lu family?

The young lad from their pawnshop was fired for being talkative.

They hired me to work there.

You wouldn't take me in as a disciple,

and I'm too young to take exams to join the Ministry of Justice.

So I thought I could be closer to you if I worked for your colleague.

You're talking so much.

It looks like you'll get fired at any time.

No way. I'm only talkative in front of my sister.

Uncle Zhong.

Why do you let everyone into the mansion?

Why do you let everyone into the mansion?

[Shen Du of Shen Mansion Top Secret]

On the first day of the sixth month, the breakfast flatbread was too hard.

Du was furious.

On the second day, dinner was acacia-leaf noodle.

Du ate three bowls of it.

On the third day, the breakfast tofu pudding was too salty.

Du was furious.

On the fourth day, we ran out of candied fruits.

Du was furious.

Sixth Miss Yan.

Do you take me for a three-year-old? [Shen Mansion Top Secret]

My Lord.

Have you settled everything in Yingzhou?

Yes, My Lord.

Here are the accounts.

[Account Book]

The revenue is nearly 30,000 taels this year.

Keep it confidential.

Don't even reveal anything to Prince Xian.

Rest assured, My Lord. No one will learn about it.

I have also taken care of the families that have expressed support for His Highness.

They have received benefits and will naturally keep their mouths shut.

There will be no slip-ups.

Liang Jiren can't keep a secret.

Grand Empress Dowager may exile him in secret.

Find an opportunity to silence him forever.

He knows too much.

- Cheng Cai. - Here.

- Zhang Xinliang. - Here.

Song—

Isn't this Madam Shen?

What's wrong?

Madam Shen came for roll call in person?

Yan Xing.

Here.

How did you get hurt so badly?

I tripped and fell.
