- I got a new board game, if you wanted to play.

- That looks very baby-ish.

I have a slightly cooler idea.

You know down at Norman's Market?

They leave the back door open every trash day,

and it is Tuesday.

I was thinking we could go down there, slip in unnoticed,

grab some of the best snacks, and drinks,

and whatever we want, slip right out

and then take a path through the woods.

No one will ever see us.

- But that would be stealing.

"Thou shall not steal."

I've heard that in Sunday school for 10 years now.

I just don't think I could do something like that.

- Don't be so scared, now that we're older, we're teens,

we need to go out and start having some adventures,

cool ones.

We're trying to fit in with the popular kids at school.

And to do that, we need to branch out,

do some things that we wouldn't normally do.

It'll put us higher, above the rest.

- I do wanna be more popular

and I am tired of being made fun of in school all the time.

I guess we could do it.

- Great, come on.

- I'm not touching anything.

- Stop stalling, hurry up.

- Just gimme a second, you act like we've done this before.

- I'm gonna get everything from back here.

That way they won't know they're missing on the racks.

- You can take all the stuff.

- Did you hear that?

- Yeah.

- Maybe we should go back before our parents kill us.

(Becky screams)

- Let's start with how they got in the store.

- I don't know who it was,

but someone left the door unlocked.

- I don't wanna say I told you so, but, I told you

and Al that you need cameras in the store.

And if we had cameras I could review the footage

and I'd have something to work with here.

- I've talked to the manager tons of times

about getting cameras in here, but he never listens to me.

- What items were taken?

- The things that were taken were candy, soda,

and some chips.

Look it, it's ripped right open, snack food.

- Has anyone come in noticed anything strange?

Did anyone pass by last night?

- Now that I think about it, Sally does work here.

She might've left the doors open on purpose.

You know how her son is, you know how she is.

- Yeah, we all know Sister Sally, but he's still in jail

so it wouldn't have been him.

I'm just glad you weren't here when they broke in

'cause you might've got hurt.

- I got cans, big heavy cans.

- You know, I like your spirit. (chuckles)

- [Dispatch] Sheriff, I got a call for you.

- Hold on for a second.

Sheriff, go ahead.

- There's a mother that wants to report a missing girl.

- Okay, send it through.

I gotta take this phone call, okay?

If I got any more questions I'll come see you.

- I hope you find out who did this.

Al's already voting for Tim Mercer.

- Tim Mercer.

Okay. Calm down ma'am.

She went missing,

you sure she's not at a friend's house or family?

There is a county road next to Norman's Market

and there is a trail through the woods there,

Now, this morning I had someone break into the Market

and then a little girl went missing.

- Where's Becky?

- I was hoping you could tell me, did you see anything?

- I don't remember.

Me and Becky were walking and we were attacked.

- I saw a man in white.

- You got a nasty cut on your head.

This is the sheriff, I got one of the girls,

I'm gonna bring her on a (indistinct) to the road.

Have the EMS unit meet me there.

Come on, I wanna keep pressure on you head, you're okay.

- Please stop. - Stop struggling, girl.

(Becky sobs)

- [Dispatch] Status check, Sheriff.

- Look, my location's County Road 122.

I'm about 400 yards in on the right.

It's obvious it's been here for a while.

- [Dispatch] There's no record found.

- What do you mean there's no record found?

- [Dispatch] I've checked the database

and there's nothing there.

- What are you, stupid?

Here's an idea, don't sneak up on a law man.

- Hello, Bobby Lee Grace.

I know the young man that robbed a store as a teenager

but then repented.

- That crime was never public, how do you know that?

I'm gonna be sitting in the hospital all night

- I was led here to the cabin while searching for this girl.

is that where you get your supplies?

- I know of the place of which you speak,

but I have everything I need right here.

- What are you, a bible thumper?

I mean this is a serious investigation.

I'm here because there's a girl kidnapped and lost somewhere

and I think you might have something to do with that.

So let's cut the crap and get down to the facts.

You don't have an ID,

so I have the legal right to take you in right now.

- I am just a humble servant of the Lord.

- Here you are, a stranger shows up in this town.

There's a girl that went missing.

I ask you for your name and your ID, you don't have one.

Then you point towards a Bible.

- I only mean to turn the hearts of the father

to their children, and the hearts of the children

to their father.

- I got my eyes on you, I'll be seeing you.

- And the eyes of the Lord are on us all, my son.

- Crazy old man.

(somber music)

If there's anything you can do to help me out here,

- I met the snowman in the woods, crazy old man in white.

He's done his research because he knew things about me

that nobody knows about, and he knew my name.

I'm not any closer to finding the missing girl

than I was this morning.

(somber piano music)

What are you, a freaking ninja?

- You must be fooled.

- Quiet old man, this is none of your business.

- I think you carry a heavy burden my son.

- I didn't hear the door, how'd you get in here?

- Why don't you tell me what's on your mind?

since you seemed to know everything?

- The newspaper is really promoting your opponent.

And it has me and Sarah arguing like never before.

A lot of division in the house because of this issue,

so it's been hard.

- My son, are you sure the division that you feel

is from this race or is it something from your heart?

- If I wanted to see a shrink, I'd go see one.

And you're by far a shrink, old man.

- My son, I tell you it's fruitless to worry.

Too often, we trust in our own abilities.

We think we can take care of our own problems.

And yet, after all our efforts, we come up short.

We must trust in the Lord because his shoulders are broad.

- What's important right now is finding this missing girl.

And as I've been searching for answers and clues,

everything has been leading me back to you.

- No my son, everything has led you to the light.

You see, it may seem dark where you are,

but that is because you are living in the shadow

of the cross.

Take just one step and you'll be in the light.

- I think it's time for you to leave.

I need to get back searching for this girl.

hawks to be specific?

- Bobby, the hawk is a mighty bird.

And just another testimony to the power of the Lord.

You see, as the hawk spreads her wings

to protect her nestlings.

- She's still in these woods, I just know it.

Look Mayor, I'm not gonna arrest him for no reason.

- [Dispatch] I got a call for you.

- Go ahead with the call.

- [Dispatch] Mr. Floyd called,

said there might be another intruder in his barn.

- I don't have time for that.

I'm trying to find the missing girl.

- [Dispatch] Sheriff,

you know Mr. Floyd just had his 98th birthday.

- All right, I'm heading over there.

- [Dispatch] I'll tell him you're on the way.

(ominous music)

I'm gonna go look around boy.

- Sheriff.

Now, I already knew that.

I'm heading in for the night.

- [Dispatch] 10, four.

- [Reporter] In recent news, sheriff candidate, Tim Mercer-

- Tim Mercer.

- [Reporter] Has proposed the building of a casino

that could bring much needed revenue to Highland County.

- We don't need a casino, Tim Mercer.

- [Tim] Yes, this could be huge, we're talking major money.

Build parks for the children, schools, so much more.

- We damn sure don't need a new sheriff.

(somber music)

- Good afternoon Bobby, would you like to come in?

Please, have a seat.

- I had a visit from the mayor this morning.

She wants me to arrest you.

I'm not gonna arrest you just yet.

We don't see eye to eye, me and the mayor.

She has a hidden agenda.

Her brother-in-law's running against me for election,

now we have a missing girl, makes me look bad.

- Oh, I see, I pray that you will find this missing girl.

- I certainly hope so.

She's using this terrible situation against me.

She's gonna try to make me look soft on crime

and that I don't know what I'm doing.

If I can't find this missing girl,

I don't know what I'm gonna do.

She's gonna get her brother-in-law in the office.

And it's gonna say, "Tim Mercer is gonna save the day,

make things better," so they can get this casino in.

They wanna make a casino in town.

Folks around here want a simple life.

- A simple life in the fear of God

is better than a rich life full of headaches.

Let me ask you, have you prayed about finding this girl?

- I don't believe in that mumbo jumbo.

I did at one time when I was a boy, but not since then.

- Bobby, walk by faith, not by sight.

(telephone rings)

- Sheriff's office.

Yes, Ms. Ward, around the clock.

I've been doing everything I can.

I'm sorry I haven't found her yet.

I still believe we're gonna find her.

I can't arrest him, I don't have the evidence

that says he did it.

Maybe Tim Mercer would be better for the job,

but I'm the man with the badge right now.

Everyone's out looking for the girl.

- Okay, well I have some important questions.

but I really need to get some answers here

'cause I need to find your friend.

I'm so worried about Becky, I really hope you can find her.

and that's why I'm here.

So tell me about Norman's Market.

- Well, it first started when Becky wanted

to sneak into Norman's Market and get some candy and things.

I really didn't want to because I know stealing is wrong.

You know, "Thou shall not steal."

But I'm trying to fit in with this new group at school

and Becky's my best friend,

and I really didn't wanna let her down

so I went along with it.

- Don't worry about that.

or taking anything.

- We went into the market

and Becky started getting the candy and all the drinks,

I didn't touch anything.

- Did you see anyone?

- I think there was an old man dressed an all white

walking by Norman's Market before we went in.

But we had to wait a few minutes for him to go by

so we could get in the store without being seen.

But after that, we left the market

and went to take a shortcut through the woods

to get back home,

so that our parents wouldn't get worried about us.

- You remember what Becky was wearing?

- She was wearing her leather jacket.

She might have been wearing earrings.

I, I think she was wearing earrings.

- Did you see anyone in the woods?

Did you hear anything, anything out of the ordinary?

- We heard something

and we were about to go out of the woods

just to take the long way home.

But something hit me and then I just faded out.

- Look, don't feel bad, you did your best.

You did remember a lot of details and that's gonna help me.

Well we were taking a shortcut home through the woods,

just laughing, and talking, and eating the stuff.

And from out of nowhere this big guy came up

and he hit Alaina in the head with a, a weapon.

I think it was a gun, and she fell to the ground.

And I just screamed and ran.

I just kept running and I guess somehow he caught up to me,

and then he grabbed me and I just,

it's all kind of blurry after that, but...

- All right, look, just take your time, start again.

- Then he dragged me away and tied me to a tree

and I don't know what he really wanted.

I think he said he was just gonna leave me out there

to die in the cold.

But it was kind of funny.

It was, I, I wasn't cold out there.

It was freezing temperatures but I wasn't, I wasn't cold.

I was warm and bread started falling from the sky

right into my mouth and, and water too.

I mean, I know that it is absolutely crazy.

It sounds crazy as I'm telling you, but it, it happened.

It really happened, you have to believe me.

- Bread from the sky, manna. (chuckles)

- Then, then the guy who kidnapped me showed up

and he was getting angry.

Then a man in white came, all white,

just wearing nothing but white, just showed up

and all he did was point at the guy

and then he dropped dead into the snow.

And then the man in white, he undid my ropes somehow

and took me back through his cabin,

and I just felt safe with him.

- I called your mother, she's gonna be here shortly.

She has been worried sick about you

and any good parent would be.

And she has been on the phone with me 24 hours a day, okay?

So she really loves you, and I'm just glad we found you

and everything worked out.

(door shuts)

And there she is.

(telephone rings) I have to take this call.

Tom, yeah, okay look, give me a moment.

- I was thinking maybe we could go back to the store

and pay for the stuff we took.

- I think it'll be good.

That way we can just forget all this ever happened

and just leave it behind us.

- I wish I could tell you that I'm a new man,

and after all these positive things that have happened,

I have changed, but I haven't.
