The story of this film
is the fight of tsar Ivan
who created a single state of Moscow
against the opponents of the unity of Russian land.
In the name of the Father,
the Son and the Holy Ghost
the Grand Duke
Ivan Vassilievitch
is hereby
crowned Tsar of Moscow
and Autocrat
of all Russia.
The Muscovy Prince has no right to be tsar!
European will not recognize him as a tsar.
If he's strong enough, it will.
Some of the boyars resent his coronation.
That is understandable.
There are the Grand Duke's cousin,
Vladimir Staritsky, and his mother.
Ivan's coronation
bars their way to the throne.
But the Grand Duke has his supporters:
his bride's relatives.
Not the Grand Duke - the Tsar.
He's Tsar now.
In the name of the Father
the Son and the Holy Ghost.
Oh God-ordained Tsar,
accept from God this sceptre.
Accept from God this orb.
Accept all this, my son,
now and forevermore
for centuries to come...
For the first time a Muscovy Prince
dons the crown of Tsar of all Russia
and thereby puts an end for all time
to the multiple rule of the boyars in Russia.
Henceforth Russia is to be united.
Challenging the authority of the boyars!
But to keep
the Russian land
under a single rule strength is wanted.
Therefore we shall establish
a permanent army.
Who does not serve
in that army in person...
shall support
our campaigns with money.
Pay in money to your own undoing.
Also the holy monasteries
shall support
the military force
with their great wealth,
for their wealth is multiplying
but without benefit to the Russian land.
Strong rule will shatter those
who oppose the unity of Russia.
Given a strong united kingdom at home,
we can take a firm stand in the outside world.
What is our land now
but a body with severed limbs!
The Volga, Dvina and Volkhov rivers
flow within our realm.
Their outlets to the sea are in alien hands.
Our maritime lands
have been torn from us.
Therefore on this day
we are crowned sovereign
also of those of our lands
which are meanwhile held by other monarchs.
Two Romes fell: the third-Moscow-stands.
Never shall there be a fourth.
Of the third Rome - the realm of Muscovy -
I am henceforth the sole and absolute ruler.
The Pope won't allow it!
The Emperor will never agree!
Europe won't recognize him !
If he's strong enough, all will recognize him.
He must be kept from growing strong.
He is to be wed soon.
We'll fix a fine wedding for this ruler!
Why should Ivan be privileged?
Why should Prince Kurbsky be his vassal?
Is the Kurbsky family less noble than Ivan's?
Why has Ivan become monarch in Moscow
and not Andrei Kurbsky in Yaroslavl?
Why all the bell-ringing?
The people of Moscow rejoice.
The wine is bitter!
Bitter ! Bitter !
Bitter !
Why are not my friends merry?
Because it is a true saying :
"Marriage sunders friends."
And what does Fyodor Kolychev say?
You are shattering ancient customs.
I foresee much discord therefrom.
I would not oppose Your Majesty, but neither can I go along with you.
Give me lease to retire to a monastery.
Exchanging the earthly for the heavenly Lord?
I shall not stand
between you and God.
You have me leave.
Pray for us, sinners.
I ask only that in our hour of need
you do not forsake us. Come back at our call.
They've fired the Glinsky and Zakharyin mansions.
Now they're coming here, demanding to see the Tsar.
To the Tsar!
District Zamoskvorechye is in flames!
Let the people in !
Tsar...
The Tsar is bewitched...
Bewitched by the Tsarina's kin...
the Glinskys and Zakharyins.
We kneel before you !
We make complaint against the Tsarina's family!
They squeeze the life out of the people.
They sprinkle their floors with human blood!
And that blood lights fires!
Houses are burning.
There is a sign of ill omen over Moscow.
Bells have dropped from belfries of themselves.
Omens, you say? Bells dropping?
The head that believes in such omens
is itself as hollow as a hollow...
bell.
Can a head fall off of itself?
To fall...
it has to be cut off...
The same with bells.
Who cut the bells down without our permission
will soon have their heads cut off.
The Tsar, it seems is no fool.
And we will cut heads off mercilessly!
We will crush sedition.
We will crush sedition,
eradicate the treason of the boyars!
A kingdom cannot be ruled
without an iron hand.
Like a bridleless horse under a tsar,
so is a kingdom without an iron hand.
But who stands with the Tsar against foes,
him will the Tsar elevate.
He will cherish his warriors
and show favour to them.
Dare not even think any such thing, Prince.
I am the faithful servant of the Tsar of Muscovy,
in his great cause.
Broad and bounteous are our lands
but we have little order.
We shall not ask anyone's aid: we will instil order ourselves.
We will crush sedition !
As for artisans and merchants
we will stand up for them.
Let no one harms them !
Three envoys from Kazan to see the Tsar.
From Kazan? Admit them.
Kazan breaks friendship with Muscovy,
to war against it.
Kazan is big, Muscovy small.
Muscovy is no more.
The great Khan sends a gift.
Russian Tsar, avoid disgrace. Take your own life!
God knows, we wanted no war.
But the time is past
when audacious aliens could invade
the lands of Muscovy with impunity.
This knife will strike down those who have fought Muscovy.
We will have done with Kazan ourselves!
March on Kazan !
On Kazan !
Kazan is small, Muscovy big.
You will command the leading regiment.
On Kazan !
As many coins as are unclaimed after the battle,
count that many men fallen.
The sap is ready for the gunpowder.
A whole month we've been waiting. It's high time we attacked.
Sap and gunpowder the Tsar's idea.
No faith in my gunpowder?
Fancy yourself on horseback!
Shout: "Kazan surrender!"
Kazan !
Better for you to die at our hands
than at the hands of the infidels!
Useless brutality is stupid.
Even beasts are rational in their anger.
You dare to lift your hand against the Tsar!
I shielded him from an arrow!
If that is so, I thank you.
The Livonian was right.
He'll aIways treat me as an underling.
Sometimes an arrow comes flying at the right moment.
Worse than Tatar arrows is the hatred of the boyars.
Fear the princes and boyars, not arrows.
Your name?
Alexei Basmariov.
I shall remember the name of one who hates boyars.
Look, Fyodor, look son.
The Tsar of all Russia..
The Tsar...
Forward! On Kazan !
Supporting fire for Kurbsky!
Now I shall indeed be Tsar.
Now all will recognize the Tsar of Muscovy
as the sovereign of all Russia!
How is the Tsar's health?
The Tsar is ill.
The Tsar fell ill
on his way back from Kazan.
You too now concede him to be Tsar ?
God is just...
Ivan put himself above all other princes,
now his end has come!
Well, Prince, still always second?.
You loved Anastasia, Ivan took her.
You conquered Kazan, it's Ivan's.
All the glory to Ivan...
To you...
You won Kazan for Ivan to the harm of the boyars
and yourself.
You're marked man.
The tsar will not soon
forget the Tatar arrow.
If he does forget,
there's someone to remind him.
The Tsar's all seeing eye...
Malyuta.
If Ivan lives
Kurbsky dies.
But God is merciful!
Going to administer the Sacrament.
That means he's on his deathbed.
Have mercy, Lord!
To whom will you swear allegiance?
To the Crown Prince Dimitry,
Ivan's son.
And Anastasia's!
Aiming to climb into the widow's bed?
Pledge allegiance to Vladimir.
Men like you are not to be bought with money.
Their price is power.
Under Vladimir
you will rule Muscovy.
Vladimir is worse than a child,
he is feeble minded.
You will be ruler.
Kiss the cross in favour of Vladimir...
The Tsar summons you.
My end has come...
I am taking leave of this world.
Take oath.
Kiss the cross to my heir, Dmitry.
Pledge allegiance to my son !
Kiss the cross to my son...
Only absolute power
can safeguard Muscovy from her foes.
Otherwise the Tatars will invade us again.
The Poles and Livonians will march against us.
Not for myself or my son do I plead,
for the unity of the Russian land.
Palitsky, Ivan !
Turuntai-Pronsky!
Kolychev-Umny, Danila,
set an example!
Kolychev Nemyaty, why are you silent?
Kurlyatev!
Funikov!
For this you will be eternally damned!
Traitors to the Russian land!
You will be eternally
damned!
Only in his son lies your saIvation.
Unless you submit to a single monarch,
then however strong and brave you may be,
however wise, your ruIe will be like unto madness.
Hating each other,
you will not be serving your native land,
you will be slaves to foreign rulers.
Never shall the glorious boyars
be under the heel
of the Muscovy Prince's last son.
Power must pass into
the hands of a boyar tsar,
that he may share it with the boyars,
do the will of the boyars,
and serve the boyar families.
Kiss the cross to Tsar Vladimir!
Glory to the boyar Tsar!
The path to the throne...
The path to the crown... Whom to go with?
Anastasia?
Efrossinia?
Anastasia ? Be mine and I will protect you from the boyars.
I will place you on the throne,
we will reign together.
Without you, life means nothing to me.
With you, death holds no fear.
Throne or scaffold, I care not if I am with you.
My Muscovy Tsarina!
It is not well to bury
a man before he is dead.
Ivan is alive?
Let God be your judge.
Ivan lives...
If Ivan lives
Kurbsky dies.
In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost,
I vow on the Bible to serve faithfully
the lawful heir to the throne,
Dimitry.
To this I kiss the cross.
The holy Sacraments
wrought my recovery.
You have been our right hand.
Now you will rise still higher,
for the hour of our great trial,
you alone remained loyal
to our cause.
I place you in charge of our supreme undertaking.
We have done with the East.
You will lead
the Russian armies westward.
Against Livonia!
To the sea!
Flying away swift as an arrow?
Fly, fly...
To defend our southern boundaries
against the Crimean Khan
I appoint Alexei Basmanov.
Whoever is he?
The Tsar trusts no one,
he displaces boyars, promotes commoners.
He shows favour to the Basmanovs.
I know.
He transfers boyars from their old estates to new.
He persecutes the boyars!
Shchenyatev's been seized!
So has Kurlyatev!
I know.
I'll flee!
I can't bear it. I'm afraid!
I'll flee to Lithuania!
Ivan Ivanovitch, For shame!
The Metropolitan has gone to beg the Tsar for mercy.
The Tsar refuses to pardon anyone.
For interceding, he is removing me from office,
and transferring me to Novgorod
I'll run away!
By all that's holy, I'll flee.
Let cowards flee.
We who remain
we fight.
While Ivan's closest friend
Kurbsky is far away,
we must curb the Tsar,
not let him grow
more powerful.
We must obstruct his campaigns,
contribute no money
to the Livonian war.
First and foremost,
and foremost,
Anastasia must be removed.
That's me!
That I take upon myself.
I need the maritime cities:
the baltic towns.
Riga,
Revel,
Narva.
The Livonians have again detained the British ships.
They've left my guns without lead,
sulphur and tin, without craftsmen.
I will not allow our foes
to impede the progress of Russia,
to strangle our commerce.
But the Germans are not the only foes of our progress.
You, boyars,
who oppose the Livonian campaign
are worse enemies of the Russian empire
than the Germans and Livonians.
You see how badly I need
that military alliance.
Present these to
Queen Elizabeth of England.
By means of these figures explain to her
how her ships can bypass the Baltic Sea
and reach us via the White Sea,
outwitting the Germans and Livonians.
Remind her Tsar Ivan
is here the sole merchant,
holding all commerce in his own hands.
He can grant privileges
to whom he will,
bar from his kingdom whom he will.
To him who wins his favour he will open the road to the East.
You are worried, Tsar Ivan.
I stand alone,
I can trust no one.
Kurbsky is waging war
in Livonia.
Fyodor Kolychev is praying in his monastery.
Solovki.
I have only you.
From Ryazan.
From Basmanov!
Again the boyars resist our commands.
They are betraying
the Russian land,
not letting Basmanov defend Ryazan.
They wish to surrender it
to the Crimean Khan !
Be firm !
I will.
I'll put a tight rein on them.
I will abolish all patrimonial estates.
Only for service to the kingdom will I grant land.
Who refuses to serve, from him will I take
from him will I take his lands away!
You're aiming high, Tsar Ivan.
Bad news!
Our armies smashed at Nevel!
Kurbsky defeated?
Can he really have turned traitor?
Save me,
O God!
For the waters are come in unto my soul.
I sink in deep mire, where there is no standing,
I am come into deep waters,
their current drags me
where the floods overflow me.
I am weary with my crying,
my throat is dried. Mine eyes fail...
Prince Shuisky
has taken refuge in Lithuania.
Prince Sheremetev
has been intercepted.
Boyar Suzdalsky
has fled to Livonia.
They that hate me
without cause are more
than the hairs of mine head.
Prince Vorotinsky has fled.
Prince Turuntai-Pronsky
has been seized in flight.
Am I in the right?
Perhaps this is God's punishment?
I am become a stranger unto my brethren.
And an alien unto my mother's children.
Am I right to carry on my severe struggle?
Your Majesty!
Kurbsky has fled to King Sigismund.
Andrei,
my friend,
why?
What did he lack?
Or is it that...
he desired my crown?
The boyars are again inciting the people,
using our defeat in Livonia to sow confusion.
"Reproach hath broken my heart
"I Iooked for some to take pity,
"but there was none,
"but there was none.
"And looked for comforters,
"but I found none."
Not so!
The Tsar of Muscovy
is not vanquished yet!
You are too few...
Summon my loyal friend,
Fyodor Kolychev.
He is praying for us in the Solovki Monastery.
Do not trust boyar Kolychev.
Surround yourself with new men,
come from the commonalty,
who owe all to you.
Surround yourself with them as with an iron ring,
its sharp spikes pointed against your enemies.
Let these men renounce
all kith and kin,
know only the Tsar,
do only the Tsar's bidding.
As the first
in that iron ring,
to serve that great cause,
I offer you
my one and only son.
flesh of my flesh.
I give him to you.
With these men you can maintain power,
smash the boyars,
crush the traitors,
achieve your great aims.
You speak true, Alexei.
I will ring myself round with men of iron.
Except for these opritchniki,
I will trust no one.
An iron abbot will I be.
I shall leave Moscow for Alexandrov village.
And then you will march on Moscow!
Not so.
I shall return by popular request.
You cannot wait for that!
You cannot trust the rabble.
You dare to teach the Tsar, you mangy dog !
The request of the people
will invest me with unlimited power.
I will be as newly anointed
to continue my great rigorous mission.
- What say you? - You are right!
In the popular summons
I would see divine will.
I will accept the sword
of retribution from God
to accomplish my great mission !
Two Romes fell, the third- Moscow-stands fast.
Never shall there be a fourth !
"The princes and boyars,
"who have accumulated much wealth,
"care neither for the sovereign nor the kingdom,
"nor for orthodox
"Christianity.
"They refuse to defend Christianity
"against the Livonians
"the Creamean Khan,
"and Germans.
"They do violence to the people.
"Therefore the Tsar,
"Lord and great Prince
"now abandons his kingdom
"and his capital,
"Moscow.
"But with guests and merchants
"and with all Christians
"of Moscow,
"the Tsar has no quarrel.
"and they won't suffer.
"No disfavour falls on them.
Those good Christians
who do not associate with the princes and boyars,
and are willing to serve the Tsar
with loyalty,
faithfully,
those the Tsar invites to join his bodyguard
and to pledge allegiance to him.
Those the Tsar invites to Alexandrov village.
Waiting for a messenger from Moscow, eh?
The first English ships have entered the White Sea.
We've outwitted you,
Germans and Livonians!
The time will come
when you will submit to Muscovy.
Come back to us!
Come back!
Beloved Father!
Saddle the horses. We're off to Moscow!
For the sake of the great Russian kingdom !
