when they meet the tentacled attack of the giant squid.

Next, the Wonder Twins and their space monkey, Gleek

teach some young people the serious dangers

of playing the foolish game of chicken.

It's the Superfriends' problem

when trouble surfaces on the high seas.

All are in danger from the menace of the deep

the marauding Manta and his terrifying water beast.

Finally, Superman and special guest hero, Samurai

face the heat of a volcano in making a curious rescue.

[male narrator] Deep in the depths of the Philippine Sea

strange experiments are taking place

in the remote underwater laboratory of Dr. Pisces.

[Pisces] This electrode device we've implanted

will enlarge this squid to 20 times its size

and when we set him loose

the device will cause his ink to spread

and enlarge all other marine life to enormous proportions.

We're going too far, Dr. Pisces.

Giant sea life could create havoc all over the world.

Nonsense. My discovery will solve the world's food shortage.

Dr. Pisces, you must call off the experiment.

I will not hear of it.

Success! Soon the oceans of the world will be teeming

with mammoth fish.

Those monster fish must be stopped.

Superfriends. The Philippine Sea. Need help.

Giant squid creating monster fish.

You've got to stop Dr. Pisces.

But neither you nor the Superfriends

[male narrator] Instantly, Superman and Aquaman

race to the Philippine Sea

where the giant squid continues

to spread its growth-causing ink.

[intense music]

I've never seen so many whales in this area before.

Superman, those aren't whales. They're monster-size tuna.

[Superman] Then the message we received was true, Aquaman.

We've got to find that giant squid.

[instrumental music]

[male narrator] Meanwhile, a luxury ocean liner steams peacefully along

completely unaware of the fate that awaits it.

[screaming]

- Help! - What is it?

Run! A monster!

[screaming]

Everyone, to your staterooms.

[alarm buzzing]

Secure the ship, watertight.

If it goes down, we'll be safe till help arrives.

[intense music]

[Superman] Aquaman, look. The giant squid.

We've got to save that ship.

Help! We're underwater.

- Someone, save us! - Help!

[people shouting]

[dramatic music]

My marine telepathy should make that squid let go.

It doesn't respond.

[Superman] We're going to have to use brute force on this fellow.

[grunting]

No good. That only makes him try to crush the ship.

[Aquaman] Our only chance is to make that squid small again.

[Superman] Right, and there's only one person who can do that.

Dr. Pisces.

[male narrator] Racing against time Superman scans

thousands of miles of ocean in search of Dr. Pisces' lab.

[intense music]

Dr. Pisces is going to have an uninvited guest

by the name of Superman.

Soon the oceans will be full of gigantic sea life.

- Superman. - Yes, Dr. Pisces.

And you must stop your giant squid.

It's pulled a cruise ship to the bottom.

Unfortunate, but what are the lives of a few

compared to the millions who will benefit?

[male 1] Help. Let me out.

There's someone behind that door.

The squid can be stopped with this, Superman.

Attach this to the squid's electrode device

and it will return to normal size.

[intense music]

[Superman] This device will shrink down the squid.

I'll drill through the cave to get to it.

There is one thing that will put a stop to Superman

and that's a kryptonite ray.

We've still got to get to the giant squid.

[Aquaman] And I'll deliver Dr. Pisces to the authorities.

I hope someday Dr. Pisces will realize

how misguided his goals were.

Though his intentions were noble

he would have jeopardized the entire ocean's

ecological balance.

Right. And who'd wanna eat a 100-pound shrimp cocktail?

[all laughing]

the Wonder Twins and Gleek are enjoying

an afternoon of bowling.

[gibbering]

We've just received a report that two teenagers

are headed for Stone River to play chicken with speedboats.

We'll take care of it.

Our Wonder Twin powers will get us there

before them. Let's go.

[male narrator] Later, near Stone River...

The first part of the code has two clues.

[male narrator] The Mid-Atlantic freighters peacefully navigate the ocean

unaware that lurking many fathoms below

is the command ship of the master undersea menace

Manta.

Atom charging capacitors at full power, Manta.

[Manta] Excellent. Soon I will rule the oceans of the world.

Activate the water beast.

[intense music]

Whoosh

[water beast growling]

Water beast, seize the freighters.

Roar

Captain, look.

Warn the other ships.

Tell them to take evasive action.

Attention, all ships. Attention, all ships.

[growling]

Engine room, give me all you've got.

Roar

[male 2] We may have a chance. Hard to starboard.

W-What's the matter with it? Get that ship.

Roar

[dramatic music]

It's success, Manta.

Your water beast has captured two freighters.

[Manta] But one got away.

My water beast is not yet perfected

but soon it will be

with the help of my archfoe

Aquaman.

[male narrator] Later, at the Hall of Justice.

Two ships have been captured by some kind of

huge water monster. It vanished below the sea.

Coast Guard vessels picked up the crews.

But international shipping is endangered

until the monster is tracked down.

[Aquaman] We'll get right on it, captain.

A water monster that captures ships?

Sounds like one of your powers gone wacko.

- Spacy, Jayna, really spacy. - There's no time to waste.

We'll have to get out there and stop it.

- Hey, what about us? - Leave it to me, big brother.

[both] Wonder Twin powers activate.

[gibbering]

[male narrator] Moments later the Superfriends begin their search

for the water beast.

I wonder if the Wright Brothers started like this.

[Jayna] It's time you started looking, brother dear.

[dramatic music]

[male narrator] Meanwhile, deep below the ocean surface

Manta and his men prepare a trap.

There's Aquaman, just like you wanted, Manta.

Yes, but Superman is too close.

A water beast will keep him busy.

Whoosh

[growling]

The water monster.

I have to stop it before it can reach those ships.

Roar

My super-strength is useless against this creature

but not my super-heat vision.

So much for the water monster.

[water beast growling]

It's re-forming. I'll have to try something else.

My plan is working. Superman is miles away.

Now, to get Aquaman. Surface.

[dramatic music]

It's Manta. I've spotted Manta's ship.

He must be the one behind this water monster.

I'm going after him.

[male narrator] With his undersea telepathy

Aquaman summons a school of electric eels.

No electricity, Manta. The controls are dead.

The eels are short-circuiting the ship's electrical system.

Yes, and Aquaman is exactly where I want him.

- But we can't move. - Don't worry.

My telepathic scrambler will stop

Aquaman's mental orders to his fish friends.

[beeping]

That ray, i-it's breaking down my communication with the fish.

Quick, activate Manta net.

A trap.

[dramatic music]

[Manta] Aquaman is mine. Deactivate water beast.

[growling]

Holy seawater. It's gone.

You'll never succeed, Manta.

The Superfriends will soon stop your water beast.

Don't bet on it, Aquaman.

That special cage you're in will electronically duplicate

your superpowers on computer tape

which I will transfer to my water beast

making him invincible. Nothing will stop him.

[intense music]

[male narrator] Later, at the Hall of Justice.

Still no word from Aquaman since he went after Manta.

[Manta over radio] Attention, Superfriends.

As you can see, Aquaman is my prisoner.

Jupiters. He's locked up in Manta's brig.

My water beast will soon attack La Paz Island.

I challenge you to stop him so the world can see

that even you are powerless against him.

We've got to stop Manta's water beast.

And save Aquaman. Let's go.

[male narrator] Meanwhile, at La Paz Island

thousands of vacationing tourists

are unaware of the impending catastrophe.

[growling]

[Manta] At this moment, your mental powers

are being beamed into my water beast.

He'll still have to battle the Superfriends.

[growling]

[Aquaman] It's using my telepathic powers to call a herd of whales.

The water beast is commanding the whales

to batter down the pier.

Jayna and I can handle that.

[dramatic music]

[both] Wonder Twin powers activate.

Form of a whale.

Shape of a waterspout.

[music continues]

[Zan] You're a typical woman driver, Jayna.

[Jayna] Cool it, Wonder brother, or I'll inhale.

Superman to Wonder Woman, prepare your ice ray.

I'll use my super-cool breath

and we'll freeze the water beast solid.

[Wonder Woman] Roger.

Roar

[exhales]

The water beast is beginning to freeze.

Towering tidal waves.

The water beast's evaded us again.

Manta must have programmed him with super-intelligence.

Quick, we've got to rescue the inhabitants.

[male narrator] While the Superfriends rescue the inhabitants of La Paz

the water beast recedes from the city

going back into the sea.

My water beast has outwitted your Superfriends.

He's returned to his element, the winner.

[male narrator] Later, at the Hall of Justice...

You've proved your point, Manta. Now what are your demands?

As ruler of the seas

I forbid any ship to leave port without my permission

and without paying a heavy tribute.

Violations will be severely punished by my water beast.

[male narrator] Can the Superfriends rescue Aquaman

and stop the water beast? Or has Manta won?

Now, do you think you know what

the first part of the code word is?

Uh-huh. Ready for the clue to the second part.

Okay, it's on that sign over there.

[female 1] A boat. ls "boat" the second part of the code?

No, but another word for boat is.

See if you can figure it out while we take another lap.

[dramatic music]

[Manta laughing]

And so I, Manta, will rule the oceans of the world

from here on out.

Holy embargos! No ship can sail without that fiend's permission.

Right. And that's just how we'll trap Manta and rescue Aquaman.

[intense music]

[male narrator] What daring scheme is Batman planning?

Sure, I'll sail without Manta's permission, Batman.

Anything to help stop him.

When Manta sends his water beast to capture this ship

he'll take it right to his secret lair.

With us hidden inside this special waterproof crate.

[chuckling]

This sure isn't what I'd call first class.

[Jayna] Spacy, Zan, real spacy.

[male narrator] While the super freighter heads for the open seas

thousands of miles away

Superman and Wonder Woman are doing aerial acrobatics

to raise money for charity.

[Wonder Woman] I hope Batman's plan works.

Until it does, we have to be seen here

so Manta won't suspect a trap.

[laughs] All is going well. Aquaman is locked in the ship's brig.

And his friends are thousands of miles away.

A ship on the open seas, Manta, without permission.

I'll teach them a lesson. Activate the water beast.

Water beast sighted. Abandon ship as planned.

[dramatic music]

[male narrator] Manta's water beast takes the bait

dragging the freighter into the murky depths.

[Manta] A fine prize. This will teach the fools to defy me.

So far, so good. Now let's find Aquaman.

And then we can deal with Manta.

- Shh. - Shh.

Holy grottos, Batman. We're in some kind of undersea cavern.

I've got the exact location on my Bat-gyrocompass.

Batman, calling Wonder Woman and Superman.

No response, not even static.

The dome of the cavern must be blocking your signal.

Looks like we'll have to take care of Manta alone.

[Batman] First the guards. Prepare Bat Boomerangs.

[Gleek screams]

[gibbering]

[clanging]

Look out!

[yelling]

[Jayna] Watch out.

[Jayna and Zan] Gangway.

Manta, Batman and Robin are on board the freighter.

Quick. Stop them.

[Robin grunting]

It's too strong, Batman. We're trapped.

My Bat Freeze Gas will freeze the ropes and make them brittle.

Now, to use this boom to take care of Manta's men.

It's time for you two to take a dip.

- Manta's escaping. - Not if we can help it.

[dramatic music]

[beeping]

I'll search for Aquaman up front. You take the rear.

[both] Wonder Twin powers activate.

[buzzing]

- Aquaman. - Zan, where's Jayna?

[Jayna] Right here, Aquaman.

[both] Wonder Twin powers deactivate.

Quick, there's a button that opens the cell.

- Which button? - Obviously this one.

Obviously.

The alarm. Someone's in the brig.

I bet it's this one.

Good work, kids.

Now we've got to find the computer tape

with my powers on it.

Sorry. I have to interfere with your plans.

You've interfered with mine long enough.

Too bad you won't be around to see my water beast

to destroy New York City.

But I must teach the world not to disobey me.

[male narrator] The Wonder Twins and Aquaman

are trapped in the canister

as it hits bottom at a thousand fathoms.

of the water beast you wanted.

the water molecules giving the beast

tremendous size and energy.

the World Trade Center with their specially equipped

Batcopter and invisible jet.

Water beast, get the Superfriends.

Now, to get behind him and release the smoke screen.

[Manta] What's happening? I can't see my water beast.

Smoke screen completed.

The water beast is hidden from Manta's view.

Phase 2, ready to go.

[music continues]

[male narrator] With the Batcopter's suction hose

connected to dozens of railroad tank cars

Batman and Robin put the next part of the plan

into action.

- Activate Batpump. - Roger.

It's working, Batman.

[Batman] Once he's separated into the tank cars

he won't be able to join together again.

Roar

[Robin] United it stands, divided it falls.

Water beast immobilized. Activate Phase 3.

We're on our way, Batman.

[both] Wonder Twin powers activate.

[dramatic music]

Shape of the water beast.

[male narrator] Hidden in the center of Zan's duplicate water beast

Aquaman awaits the final phase of their plan to capture Manta.

[Manta] Ah! My water beast stands alone. The Superfriends are defeated.

Full speed into the harbor.

[dramatic music]

You are magnificent.

Together, we will triumph over the world.

Guess again, Manta.

Aquaman. No, impossible.

The Superfriends. They've defeated my water beast.

I'll handle Manta.

[dramatic music]

Don't expect telepathic help, Aquaman.

I'm scrambling your mind waves.

Too late, Manta.

My undersea friends already have their orders.

[music continues]

[Manta] You'll never catch me, Aquaman.

[dramatic music]

[jet engines sputtering]

[male narrator] Later, with Manta safely in the hands of the authorities...

The water beast has been returned to its natural state.

Manta's fiendish device has been dismantled.

Manta's attempt to control the seas

should be a lesson to everyone.

Right. The oceans are a great source of energy

used for the wrong purposes that energy can go to waste.

And Manta's water beast was a good example

of a misuse of that vital energy.

Speaking of energy, after tackling that water beast

I feel like no one's a match for me.

L-look. It's the water beast.

[laughing]

Looks like your water beast is just Gleek being a drip.

[all laughing]

How you coming on the code?

You said I was in

the first part of the first clue.

So that had to be car.

And the second part of the first clue?

Right up there. The word go. Making the first clue cargo.

- And the second clue? - Another word for boat.

Ship. So the whole code word is "cargo ship."

Fast thinking.

I'm not fast enough to beat you around the track.

[male narrator] What strange craft has crashed into an active volcano crater?

Superman and Samurai find out

as they face the fire and fumes of the volcano.

[Superman] Today's magic trick is called scissor sorcery.

And this seemed like the perfect place to show it to you.

I'm going to snip the ends off this sealed envelope.

Then I slip a cardboard strip through the envelope.

I'll now cut the envelope in two

without harming the cardboard at all.

See? The cardboard has magically remained intact.

Check with me in a few minutes

and I'll tell you how the trick is done.

[dramatic music]

Whoosh

[sputtering]

[male narrator] Speeding through the vastness of outer space

a strange craft from another planet

rockets off course with its engines failing.

[intense music]

Commander, we cannot control the ship.

We are headed straight for a planet called Earth.

Prepare for crash landing.

[dramatic music]

[male narrator] Seconds later, the strange spacecraft hurtles

into the steaming vent of an active volcano

where it slowly begins to sink in the hot molten lava.

Meanwhile, at the Hall of Justice.

Superfriends, our radar has picked up

an unidentified flying object.

According to our calculations

it has crash-landed in an active volcano in Hawaii.

It will be taken care of.

Samurai and I will leave immediately.

Up, up and away.

[speaking in Japanese]

[male narrator] Using his powers of the mind

Samurai changes into the wind.

[intense music]

Hurry. We have not much time.

Once our ship completely sinks in the lava we will not survive.

The circuitry is completely burned out.

We have little chance. Request permission to radio for help.

Permission denied. The people of Earth may be dangerous.

We cannot let them capture our spaceship.

It is better to try to free ourselves or perish.

[dramatic music]

There's the volcano.

- A spaceship, Superman. - I'm going down. Be ready.

A flying Earth being is headed straight for us.

Activate defense beam.

Bam

I've got to try again.

They're-they're using a force beam.

They do not know we've come to help.

Perhaps we can communicate with them.

Attention, spacecraft. We pose no threat.

We have come only to assist you.

What if these Earth beings speak the truth?

- It is our only hope. - We cannot take the chance.

Get back to work.

[alarm beeping]

[male narrator] Can Superman and Samurai help the space beings

before it's too late?

Now, to explain the scissor sorcery trick.

Prepare by making a cardboard strip

that is narrower and longer than the envelope.

Seal the envelope, and make two slits in the back

that will let the cardboard pass through.

Now, when you perform the trick

you just snip off the ends of the envelope

slip the cardboard through the slits, like this

and then cut the envelope, but you don't cut the cardboard.

Magic? Not really, but that's the trick.

[dramatic music]

They have refused our offer of help.

There are only minutes before their craft sinks

and I can't get past their force beam.

I have a simple idea that should work, Superman.

[speaking in Japanese]

[male narrator] Calling out the Japanese words

for "invisible" Samurai slowly disappears.

With my invisibility

I can approach the spacecraft unnoticed

and attach this cable.

Then I can haul the craft out of the lava.

[dramatic music]

[alarm beeping]

The sensors have picked up an intruder.

Switch on forward monitor.

- No sign of anyone, sir. - The sensors never lie.

Activate the defense system.

The sensors were wrong. There's nothing in the trap.

Do not be afraid. I have come to help.

He lies. He tried to come aboard undetected.

[rumbling]

Something's gone wrong. I've got to find Samurai.

There he is, and they've captured him.

I've got one chance. Superman to Samurai.

Knock out their defense beam. I'm coming down.

I have an old Japanese trick that will get me out of here.

[speaking in Japanese]

- A fire. - Quick, the extinguishers.

[dramatic music]

That fire is just an illusion. Now, to find the right switch.

Don't bother, Earth man.

Thank you for turning off the defense beams.

[music continues]

[Superman] Now that your spacecraft is repaired

you can safely return to space.

Thank you for saving us, Superfriends

and I'm sorry for my mistrust of other beings.

But, at least, now we have friends on Earth.

And we have friends in space.
