Slay everyone that stands in our path!

Xian, you really did it. You really plotted an ovethrow!

You concealed my father`s death seeking the seat of power!

How will you pay for your crime?

Is that why you attacked the Empress`s hall bradishing your sword?

I did not plot an overthrow.

I have risen to rectify the state!

Risen? You have risen?

Escort him out!

It`s you!

Li Kaigu, you plotted all this!

Li Kaigu!

I`ve been set up!

Mother used Li Kaigu to destroy me!

How could you!

Father, I`ve been trick! I thought you were dead!

You disappoint me.

Must you make these pathetic excuses?

You brought this on yourself.

Why were you keeping weapons in the East palace stables?

You`ve been preparing all along to rise up against me and your father. Am I wrong?

Yes, father!

I kept weapons in the East Palace.

To stop mother from running amok of this country,

to stop this dynasty of Lis from becoming a dynasty of the Wus!

-Silcen! -Father,

mother will eventually cause the demise of this empire! Please pay heed to my warning!

What are you waiting for? Arrest them at once!

Arrest them!

Father!

You must listen to me, Father!

So, what new information were you able to acquire?

It appears the civil officials were not involved in last night`s event.

Not involved?

You mean Xian plotted this alone?

I have listened to the ministers talking among themselves, and they are just as shocked as we are. ~Wu Sansi~

How can you say this? ~Empress Wu Zetian~

How could they not be involved? attaked the Empress`s hall brandishing his sword!

How could Xian`s loyal followers not be involved in Xian`s attempted overthrow?

Your Highness...

-Your Highness, I.... -I will not hear it. ~Heichi changzhi~

If you can`t prove the civil officials involvement, it is your incompetence.

I don`t care what you have to do. Find the connection to the civil officials!

I will take care of it, Your Highness. ~Li Kaigu~

-You, Li Kaigu? -Yes, Your Highness.

I am the one that planned this operation.

I will see it through.

Do you have a plan?

They all deny being a part of it. How will you prove their guilt?

It all depends on the art of argument.

-The art of argument? -Yes, Your Highness.

Facts can be presented in many different ways.

Isn`t that what you are looking for, Your Highness?

You never disapoint me, Li Kaigu. You read my mind preciously.

I am not interested in the truth. I want those who had dare to challenge me brought to my feet...

They will either submit to me or face death.

Li Kaigu, I am leaving this important matter to you.

How long will it take for you to reveal the ministers`s crimes?

All will be done by the end of the night.

Tonight?

That`s not enough time.

No, I can get it done tonight.

Show me your ability. Tonight, you say?

I will stay awake and wait.

Why did you do that?

The Empress is like an angry scorpion right now. A slight mistake and we could get stung.

Don`t worry, Chulin.

I know what I`m doing.

-What happened to those in interrogation? -They`re half dead, sir.

There is a man named Zhao Daosheng among Li Xian`s followers. Fetch him.

Yes, sir. Come!

Sit him down.

Take the pen.

Do as I say,

or I will call Li Xian.

Pick up that pen if you don`t want to see your master get hurt.

Now write down the names that I call.

Li Wen...

What is the meaning of this?

The ministers have done nothing.

Don`t try to accuse them of treason!

I guess you didn`t hear me.

Bring Li Xian at once!

I will cut off his limbs in front of this bastard!

-Yes, general! -Wait!

Will you obey?

Li Wen....

Zhao Wenhui....

Wei Sheng....

Li Meng....

Jo Surya....

Zhao Daosheng wrote these names himself?

Yes, Your Highness.

All of these names are an eye-sore.

Good work, General Li.

Thank you, Your Highness.

What will you do with these men? ~Chulin~

First I will confront them.

Bring them in at once.

Yes, Your Highness.

Your Highness.

why have we been brought here?

Your Highness, we have committed no crime! Why are you treating us like criminals?

This is a list of names that Zhao Daosheng implocated... as accomplices in Prince Li Xian`s attempted overthrow.

Li Wen!

Zhao Wenhui!

Li Meng!

Wei Sheng!

You Highness, this is an outrage!

We had nothing to do with the attempted ovethrow!

This accusation is false!

I swear to you in the name of god that we are innocent!

You must believe us, Your Highness!

Silence!

-This is a crime that could shake the very foundation of the state! -We`re innocent, Your Highness!

We are innocent, Your Highness!!!!!!

Lock these men up at once!

I will soon hold a public inquiry to decide their fate!

We are innocent, Your Highness!!!!!!

-I heard that Dae Joyoung is still alive in Mt.Guifu. -Yes, Your Highness.

Incredible.

It is truly hard to believe.

-Is it true that Li Wen is dead? -It is not a confirmed report, Your Highness.

Deliver my message to Xue Rengui.

Dae Joyoung has proven himself worthy, so bring him back alive.

Yes, Your Highness.

And if indeed Li Wen is dead, bring back his body.

I will have him beheaded at the public inquiry.

As you wish, Your Highness.

General, it`s Li Wen!

General!

You`ll be executed

once you`re brought back to Chang`an!

How dare you conspire with Li Xian to commit treason against the court!

Treason?

What are you talking about?

-Lock him up immediately! -Yes, sir!

General! General Xue!

As a fellow warrior of the sword, I express my respect for your brilliance and courage.

But no matter how much this country desires you for your talent, it cannot accept you without loyalty.

Vow to the gods of heaven and earth here and now.

Erase Goguryeo out from your heart and mind

and now loyalty to Tang and its Emperor.

He has passed all of the test.

Must you do this?

Speak for all your men to hear! Vow your loyalty to Tang!

Father.

Joyoung....

My men are watching me.

How could I betray everything they believe in and voe loyalty to the country that caused Goguryeo`s fall?

I`m sorry.

We`ve worked very hard to survive.

But I can`t betray my country and my brothers.

Joyoung!!

General!!

Are you refusing to vow loyalty to Tang?

I gave him a chance.

But your son turned down his final chance.

So don`t hold this against me.

Joyoung...!

We will vow loyalty.

We will die in service of Tang!

We`ve entrusted you with our lives and followed you, General Dae.

Don`t forsake us.

If we are with you we will do anything.

So please don`t forsake us, general!

General, vow loyalty to Tang for us.

Please don`t forsake us, general!!!

Don`t forsake us, General!!!!

Father!

Talk is but talk.

I`ve cut my hair with my own hands.

You!

It`s a vow to give my all.

Here is my vow of loyalty.

I will spend the rest of my life for Tang and it`s Emperor.

Loyalty!!!!

Hongpei,

break out everything we have in the grain shed! Pigs, chickens, rabbits, goats and cows!

Slaughter everything we have and feed the soldiers!

And let them drink as much as they wish!

Yes, general.

I will stuff their bellies full!

Eat up. ~Xue Rengui~

You must be famished as well.

I will pour you a cup of wine. ~Dae Jungsang~

Wonderful,

I would never refuse a drink you pour.

How sweet it is!

It couldn`t be sweeter!

Now would pour me a cup Dae Joyoung?

I never dreamed...

I would be drinking wine poured by Dae Joyoung!

General, they`re having a party!

I smell steak and wine, too.

My stomach is growling like mad!

Guards! Bring us food!

-Bring us food, I said! -General...

I must live. I must survive this!

As if being defeated by Dae Joyoung is not enough, now I`m being wrongly accused of treason!

I can`t go down like this.

I must survive if only to get revenge!

General,

Master Mimosa would like a word with you.

Mimosa is here?

Take us to him. I would love to see him.

Mimosa!

Forgive me, general.

What are you doing?

I made you vow loyalty to Tang.

Then was all this planned from the start?

It wouldn`t have been possible wothout Mimosa`s foresight and persuasion.

Get up.

I will not be broken.

I may have vowed loyalty to Tang, but I will never give up on the revival of Goguryeo.

So you don`t haveto do this.

There are multi-ethnic warriors that

extend beyond the Three state of Goguryeo, Baekje and Shilla under your service.

And the Emperor of Tang is not the man they just vow loyalty to by cutting a lock of their hair.

Don`t you see?

They vowed loyalty to you.

Their dream goes beyond revival of Goguryeo.

What are you saying?

You`ve overcome many obstacles and prevailed. And as man grows, so does his dream.

Now you must expand your dream to embrace all men.

You will soon understand. This is our ernest desire.

~Xue Rengui`s estate~

Li Wen is alive?

He`s been held hostage by Dae Joyoung in Mt.Guifu.

He will soon be here with General Xue Rengui.

-What will happen to Dae Joyoung now? -The Empress will grant him a pardon, ~Li Jinzhong~

and perhaps a post in the government as well. ~Sun Wanrong~

She mentioned before about putting him to important service of the state.

But that`s only if he vows loyalty to Tang. ~Shin Hong~

And the Dae Joyoung I know would never do that.

General,

The Empress summons you and Lady Chulin to the palace.

I`m sure it is to praise you for service.

~Chang`an, Tang~

Speak. it`s all right.

Forgive us,

but we did not do this for a reward.

But you deserve a reward.

Tell me what you want.

If you must insist, I would like to be the defense guard captain ~Li Kaigu~

in charge of security outside Chang`an palace.

There are many higher posts within the palace more suitable for your meritorious achivements. ~Empress Wu Zetian~

Why do you wish to be assigned to such a low position?

It is the last stronghold protecting the Imperial Palace where the Emperor and the Empress reside.

How could it be considered a low position?

Also,

even the higher general must leave their soldiers and horses behind when they enter the city.

The rank may be low, but the authority is high, so how could I not covet such a post?

Your explanation makes me want to keep you near even more.

I`m making you head of the Royal Guards to oversee the security of the palace.

I am honored, Your Highness.

Thank you, Your Highness.

I wish ministers of the state were like the two of you.

They`ve got nothing to offer to this state, yet their greed for power will reach the sky.

Your Highness, Lord Wu Sansi to see you.

See him in.

Your Highness,

General Xue Rengui just arrived.

General Xue?

-He looks as proud and confident as ever. -Yes, he hasn`t change a bit.

I could ask for nothing more now.

I can do what I have to do now that I know General Dae is all right.

What you have to do, Your Grace?

Good work, General Xue.

I declared that I would test Dae Joyoung`s ability and let him live.

Not only did he drink both poisoned wine to save his master King Bojang

but he survived Mt.Guifu as well, so he has passed all my tests.

I will now put Dae Joyoung to service of Tang, so give me your recommendations on suitable posts.

Your Highness,

you must first acquire a vow of loyalty from Dae Joyoung before he is granted a government post.

I, Dae Joyoung and my 121 subordinates vow loyalty to Your Highness the Empress.

What is in the box?

Dae Joyoung and his men cut locks of their hair to solidify their resolve.

Locks of their hair?

I like that resolve.

Thank you, Your Highness.

Now I would like your recommendations.

Your Highness,

Perhaps he could guard one of the four gates of the city.

Make him a chief gatekeeper?

Yes, Your Highness. It just happens that

-the North Gate is without a chief right now. -Then will leave that matter to you, General Heichi.

Thank you, Your Highness.

Where is Li Wen?

He`s been palced in confinement along with the other conspirators. ~Wu Sansi~

How will you deal with them, Your Highness. ~Xue Rengui~

There are two things I can do.

I can have them executed for treason and prevent future evil, or show them mercy

and reform them into my faithtul retainers.

Father...

You did it.

You took it well.

Let us never forget the humiliation

and the disgrace of today. ~Dae Jungsang~

I`ve placed the prisoners from Mt. Guifu under your command like you asked. ~Heichi Changzhi~

I don`t know how to thank you for everything you`ve done.

Nonsense.

I`m a former general of Baekje and I failed to save my own people.

But you, you saved Baekje prisoners from Mt.Guifu as well.

No, they`re the ones that helped me.

You might start off as a petty gate guard, but I believe in your ability.

There is no way to recapture Goguryeo now. That goes for Baekje as well.

The only way to get back at the world is by making a name for ourselves.

I will work for the glory of Baekje, and you will work for thr glory of Goguryeo.

Put the past behind now.

There is no way to escape, and there is no way to survive even if you do

Do you understand?

I understand, General.

You should go now. Everyone is waiting for you.

There`s something I must know. What happened to King Bojang?

I searched for him, but no one knows his whereabouts.

How about Princess Sukyoung?

I heard she`s a palace maid in the main palace, but I haven`t seen her.

Is there any way to get her out of ther palace?

Palace maids, servants, once you set foot into the palace, you are stuck for life.

Especially the main palace... everything in there is His Majesty`s possession.

Welcome, Your Highness.

You wench!

How dare you raise your head at the Empress? Drop your head at once!

Take this audacious little wench aeway immediately!

-Don`t. -Your Highness...

Her stature and her eye are unlike ehose of an ordinary servant.

If she is not insane, she will have a reason.

I am Sukyoung, the niece of Goguryeo`s King Bojang. ~Lady Sukyoung~

Of course.

Your audacity is indeed that of royalty of the state that beleaguered Tang for so long.

So what do you have to say?

I don`t belonge here.

Then where do you belong?

Let me be with my uncle King Bojang.

Wench!

"The tree wishes to be still but the wind doesn`t stop;

The children want to care for the parents but the parents don`t wait.

Time cannot be chased after;

And parents can`t come back once they go."

Confucius.

King Bojang is like a father to me.

You`re brave. And you`re smart.

-Escort Yeom, -Yes, Your Highness.

Bring this girl to my chambers tomorrow.

-She`s quite intelligent. -Yes, Your Highness.

Send me to my uncle.

-If he`s in thispalace somewhere.... -Your uncle is no longer in this palace.

And the only way that you will leave this palace is if you die.

There you are, My lady. We must go now.

-General Li is waiting to go home with you. -Let`s go.

My Lady!

What`s wrong?

Princess Sukyoung has been taken by the palace maids! I`m afraid they will hurt her,

and you`re the only one I can turn to.

-Where did they take her? -To the hills behind the main palace.

Let`s go.

How dare you!

We know your ploy to become an imperoal concubine! You have no idea where you are, do you?

Dozens of servants vanish into thin air every year in the main palace.

We don`t tolerate wenches like you that disturb order around here.

There`s no sense in waisting time.

Just kill her and bury her.

We`ll tell the Empress she took ill and died.

Stop!

What`s going on here?

Who the heck are you, wench?

You should`ve just walked away.

Kill them all!

Don`t...don`t kill us!

-Clean it up and leave no trace behind. -Yes, my lady.

Your grace.

-are you all right? -I`m fine.

It`s a military uniform. Put it on.

-Who are you? -Don`t be afraid.

Lady Chulin sent me.

She`s outside checking the situation. Here, achange into these.

They`re plain clothes so you will blend in.

Thank you.

You have to move quickly.

They haven`t found you missing yet.

Go to the North gate at the edge of the city. You`ll find Dae Joyoung there.

My men will take you.

This is as far as I go in helping you.

Bear life`s hardships with Dae Joyoung from now on.

Thank you.

Please don`t tell Dae Joyoung that I was the one that helped you.

If that`s your wish.

We can`t attempt an escape right away. We have to wait until they trust us.

A month, two months, even if it takes a year. We have to wait patiently until we have their complete trust.

Mimosa, I`d like you to work out an escape plan in the meanwhile.

Yes, general.

There is a lady named Sukyoung looking for you. She says she knows you.

Princess Sukyoung? Where is she?

-General... -Your Grace...

I never dreamed that I would see you again.

There is so much I want to know.

How did you get out of the palace, and how is His Majesty, and...
