Original subtitles

It's getting hot.

It's brutal.

I'm so hungry.

I don't know about you guys,

but my visions are getting a bit tunnel-y.

I don't know if I'm gonna make it.

We need to find shade.

How are we gonna get through 40 miles

in 40 days like this?

Yeah, there's probably snakes in here.

Uh, be careful.

This is really dangerous territory.

All right, listen, listen, listen.

Oh, my God. Look at the size of that bloody thing.

He's big. He's big.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Be careful. Be careful.

All right. Shh.

- Holy -Get him! Get him!

-Quick, quick, quick, quick! ...Goddammit.

For 10 years,

the Naked and Afraid XL Challenge

has been the ultimate test...

Yeah!

...to determine the best of the best.

Africa!

Yeah!

Kind of a big deal. I keep telling you guys.

Now, a brand-new generation

of 21-day survivalists

seeks to earn their place...

That's why I'm out here.

To prove that I belong here.

Yeah!

...by trying to survive 40 days.

This is brand-new territory.

Snake, right there.

Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.

You okay?

God damn it!

None of us know what it's like on day 22.

I wish that I knew how to quit.

In a location that will test them

at every turn.

- Ah! Sam -What happened? Where is it?

The Colombian badland.

We are in an environment designed to break us.

My butt seems to have taken quite a pounding from the bugs last night.

Little bastard!

-Ants. -They're driving us crazy.

...blasted by intense heat and humidity...

It is absolutely a scorcher.

My heart won't stop racing, and I can't hear much.

...and pounded with relentless tropical storms.

Colombia's a wet vampire bitch.

It is a torrential downpour.

-This water's rising. -What?

Oh, my God!

We're gonna be hypothermic in the next hour.

The temperature drops drastically.

I can't move.

I hate this place!

And for the first time ever,

they will have to travel 40 miles in 40 days

to reach the end.

We're doing 40 miles in 40 days?

No!

From grassland to jungle to swampland.

It is absolutely soul-breaking.

There's so much to prove.

This is a rite of passage.

Come on!

Come on!

This is the major leagues.

Oh, my God!

He's big. He's big.

She's got his tail. She's got his tail.

Yeah!

Yeah, baby!

This is where legends are born.

Yeah!

Five degrees north of the equator,

deep in the heart of central Colombia,

the survivalists enter their first XL challenge

in four groups of three...

We're in the badlands, baby.

We got to go in hard.

...but have no idea

how far they'll have to go

to reach the end.

The team of Andrew, Cole, and Kaiela

are the first to enter the challenge.

Man, I think 40 days in this environment

is definitely gonna be tough.

-Yeah. -Um, it definitely scares me.

It's an insane insect breeding habitat.

-Yeah. -For sure.

The bugs, they can eat you alive out here.

At least we get to all go through it together

-for the first time. -That's right.

Day 22 will be like

a brand-new world for all three of us.

Yeah.

I've had a unique ride to get here.

I have more than one tick in my butt.

And as a survivalist, I'm not perfect.

I think this is a good time to panic.

I feel like gay Robinson Crusoe.

I'm gonna laugh when I'm happy,

and I'm gonna maybe cry

when I'm struggling.

-Are you crying? -No.

-No. -Oh.

No, I'm not.

But I think in the end, one of my skill sets

is to try to bring people together.

-This is me right now. -You better get the out of my

- I'm asking for the -That is a

Shut up, both of you.

This is the end. And we're not doing this now.

We need each other. We survive together.

I have this, like, reoccurring nightmare

that I wake up in the middle of the night

and my head is in a jaguar's mouth.

So if I wake up screaming,

just snap me out of it.

I feel like this is our proving grounds for sure.

Absolutely.

12 miles to the north,

the team of Adam, Heather, and Sam

prepare to make their mark.

I can see how this place has a bad reputation.

Everything that's dangerous, all lives in this one spot.

We've got pumas, ocelots.

-Jaguars. -Jaguars.

Yeah. There are cougars here, and I don't mean me.

This is gonna suck. I mean,

we are taking an express elevator to hell,

100%. That's what this is about.

But I've already accomplished two 21-day challenges.

It's been real.

-It's been awesome. -It's been real.

And the best way to describe me is,

if there's a level above alpha,

like, I'm above that.

Friction fire is crazy hard.

We've got to follow all the rules that have been set long before us,

not our opinions.

Wait a minute. You just said what our opinions are,

and I know what that kind of catty comment it was,

and I'm gonna address it now

so we can get it out of the way.

You have to have that confidence.

You can either come out of here a hero,

or you can go home and lick your wounds.

15 miles further north,

the team of Terra, Lynsey, and Nathan

enter the badlands.

This is definitely the real deal out here.

It sure is.

There is so much diversity,

so much danger,

so much buried terrain. This is nuts.

There are 31 species of coral snakes.

Thirty-one flavors.

-Twenty-five of which are venomous. -Yeah.

The Colombian badlands are

exactly what they seem.

They're wet. They're hot. They're muggy. They're buggy.

They're full of snakes, caiman, and cats,

but at least this time I'll be with people.

Sean?

On my first challenge,

my partner ended up having to tap out.

It's day three,

and I am officially alone.

I'm gonna make it.

I was there for 21 days,

and I spent 19 of them alone.

Elephant poop has a high nutritional value.

After that, I did a solo challenge.

Oh, God. Here we go.

It just showed me that I really am resilient.

Ow!

And I do have what it takes

to be out here and do this challenge.

Twenty-one days!

-This is gonna be epic. -Yeah.

-One hell of an adventure. -Mm-hmm.

Or one adventure of hell.

34 miles to the south,

Chris, Malorie, and Shell

are the final team to enter the challenge.

Oh, watch out, watch out, watch out.

Whoa!

Oh, my God.

This is a brutal environment.

To make it through to 40,

you need to be a different breed up here,

but also in here.

But leave it to the Canadian to get it done.

Yeah!

That cobra tried spitting at me.

The Canadian struck back first.

We have food, baby!

Well, I think we're here.

Let's go.

All right, time to get naked.

Is this it?

I think this might be it.

Didn't think I'd be doing this again.

Well, it's just another day at the office.

Looks like this is it.

-All right. -Here we go.

Let's get our asses out there.

Literally.

I am transgender.

I changed my sex from male to female.

But this is survival.

Gender doesn't matter.

Here we go.

So, I am hoping that my peers out here,

the other survivalists,

will be okay with who I am and what they see.

So awesome.

I love it.

A survivalist is a survivalist no matter what.

And it's going to take all three of us together

to make it 40 days.

-We're naked. -We're naked.

Now it's real.

Oh, there's our bags.

The best thing about the uniform,

it always fits.

For the challenge,

each survivalist has selected a personal blade,

plus one additional item

they think will help them survive

the Colombian badlands.

Each team also receives a pot

for boiling and purifying water,

as well as a fire starter.

-Awesome. -Oh, yay.

-All right. Who's got the map? -I got the map.

Let's see what we got here, guys.

This is a pretty big map.

This is a pretty big map.

-It looks like we're this little yellow dot here. -Oh, wow.

Okay. That's us. Yeah.

Extraction's way over there.

That is really far away.

No doubt.

It looks like our legend here says

-one inch equals five miles, so... Yeah.

-That can't be right. -That looks pretty gnarly.

Gosh, it looks to be about...

25.

Thirty-five.

It's definitely a good 40 miles to extraction.

Forty miles in forty days.

Wow.

-That is huge. -Wow.

In the most punishing XL challenge ever attempted,

each team starts exactly 40 miles

from the day 40 extraction point,

but limited water sources

will force them to plot their own strategic courses

across 600 square miles

of brutal proving grounds.

From sun-scorched savannas

to bug-infested jungles

and caiman-filled swamps,

every skill will be tested

as they prove they can cover 40 miles

in 40 days.

-Oh, man. -Forty miles in forty days.

This has got to be a joke.

This is insane.

How far did you have to go in Africa?

Twenty-one miles in twenty-one days.

-This ground is bloody hot. -Yeah.

On my first challenge,

over those 21 days, we had to travel 21 miles.

That's a long way to go.

Definitely one of the most challenging things I've done.

Suddenly 21 seems like it's the bunny slopes.

The first question to ask is,

where are we gonna make a beeline for first?

That's a lot of barefootin'.

-We're gonna have to plan this carefully... Oh.

We're gonna have to do a mass amount of miles,

I feel like,

-and then we can rest for a handful of days... Rest for a while.

-And then do a big push. -Do a big push.

We're gonna need a lot of food.

We're gonna need to stay hydrated along the way.

We have 10 miles

just to get to this water source here.

-Let's do this. -Let's do it.

It's gonna be weird being a nomad out here

and having to not only survive the elements,

but also survive the distance.

Like, how is that even possible?

A journey of 40 miles begins with one step.

As the teams begin their first push into the badlands,

Adam, Heather, and Sam

have chosen to bypass smaller water sources

in favor of a large river

over nine miles away.

The sun is just baking.

Yeah. It's getting hot.

Oh, yeah.

I'm sweating like a busted garden hose.

In this kind of heat,

it feels like it's gonna take a long time

to go a short distance.

-Yeah... That's gonna be a factor in

our plan moving forward.

The environment's gonna dictate the strategy, isn't it?

I knew this was the ultimate challenge.

But 40 miles in 40 days, like, reality is setting in.

This is like a marathon.

That's quite an incline.

South American StairMaster.

We're gonna have to earn this one.

Every day is gonna have to be earned.

It's definitely taking a lot more out of me than I anticipated.

-Yeah... It feels like we've gone a lot, lot further.

Yeah. This 40 miles is gonna feel like 400.

Even for Australian standards, this is getting pretty hot.

In Australia, I spend a lot of time hunting in the bush,

so I know I have the skills to do what this takes.

Some of the these are starting to come out.

Just be careful.

But I go hard.

Oh, they're swarming.

And if I see an opportunity,

I'm gonna jump on it and take it.

Holy

Look at that. We got honey.

I am noticing that we're all starting to sweat less,

which is a sign that we're starting to dehydrate now.

You know, my body's just not cooling itself very efficiently.

Yeah. I'm, like, overheating.

Yeah. I am definitely right there.

No one's ever gone 40 miles

barefoot in 40 days.

We're right in the middle of the heat of the day.

We're cooking in the sun.

We've just got to keep pushing. I mean, if we stop now,

there's no water, and we're done.

Oh, wow. Look at that.

You know what I don't see?

I don't see a water source.

Yeah.

It's not looking good.

To the far north,

Lynsey, Terra, and Nathan

aim for a system of creeks

eight and a half miles away,

in the middle of a deep jungle,

crawling with venomous coral snakes

and fer-de-lance,

whose hemotoxic venom eats away

at the tissue of its victims.

So, guys, we're getting into some thicker grass.

Mm-hmm.

We definitely need to keep our eyes out for snakes around here.

Agreed.

I'm worried about the ticks.

-Ticks, too. Yeah. -Yeah.

Out here, it would be foolish to say

that there is a single thing that I'm not worried about,

but at the same time,

I don't view this so much as a challenge,

but as a simulation of Paleolithic living.

I'm an expert in primitive technology and fishing,

and living off the land, hunting, gathering,

and foraging is essentially my religion.

All right.

Spears worked.

They sure did.

That's how we were made to live.

This is a lot of work.

It's like going back in time,

returning to your primal nature,

demonstrating a level of skills where you can thrive,

not just barely scrape by.

Right now, there's no mosquitoes at all.

Pretty cool, man.

-Damn... A little rougher on the feet.

-Yeah. -Mm-hmm.

Doesn't feel good.

-Forty miles like this is gonna be horrible... Yep.

This is awful.

Forty miles in forty days,

and we've only covered a tiny little bit.

You think about five miles?

-Is that your guess? -Yeah.

I'm sweating, I'm losing fluids,

but, uh, still looking for a good water source.

Over this hill, through those woods,

continue that way until we find something to drink.

We've got a long ways to go.

Forty miles. Forty days.

Where do you think that puts us?

Beyond that horizon.

Whew.

Holy

-All right. Come on, guys. -Let's go.

-Oh, my God. -It's very hot.

I'm slicker than possum on a hot tin roof right now.

From their starting point to the south,

Andrew, Cole, and Kaiela

are making a push for a system of ponds

on the edge of a dense jungle

six miles away.

The perfect hunting grounds of puma and jaguar,

the third largest cat in the world,

with jaws strong enough to crush the skull of its prey.

Is it evil of me that I'm like,

Cole's going first in case there's a snake?

No.

That's totally good.

I've definitely killed my fair share of snakes.

We have a long way to go, and we're gonna be

going through different ecosystems,

and there's a bunch of stuff out here that can hurt us,

but this is an opportunity to showcase my abilities

and show the world what Cole's made of.

Being a hunter, and especially an archer,

I go spend 30 days in the mountains by myself,

hunt down elk.

He's down.

Round two with this little croc.

Look how close he is right there.

I'm gonna take advantage of every opportunity.

And I firmly believe that

there's nothing that I cannot do.

Once I get my mind set on something,

I usually don't quit until I get that prize in my hand.

Oh, my God, man. Thank you so much.

The 40-day challenge just

takes it to that next level,

and I'm here to break the mold of

everything that's been done before.

That's us right there, huh?

Yup.

-Yeah. -Yeah, and you can tell

there's definitely water down there.

All those trees.

-The sun. -Ooh, that sun.

-Yup. -Dang.

Dehydration on the way.

You know how it is. Once you hit dehydration,

-it's so hard to come back. -Yeah.

What do y'all think? We go in here and get a little shade?

-Yeah. -Yes.

Ooh, check this out.

It's a pretty good little pond here.

I mean, definitely have fish in here for sure.

There could be caiman in here.

Yeah, I really want to catch a caiman.

Same.

What do y'all think about maybe this becoming our camp?

Hmm.

But it scares me potentially having some

mega insects, like, right on...

Like, this is all super wet.

Muscle spasm.

In your leg?

In my back.

Oh.

Are you okay?

Dehydration. Just cramp.

I'm good, I'm good.

Definitely ready for some water.

-Definitely need water. -Yeah.

I am absolutely wrecked.

Oh, me too.

I am too.

I can't keep going.

There's water.

-You've got the map? -Yeah.

So, here we are.

We basically, we haven't actually

-gone much distance towards extraction... Yeah.

Five miles from their starting point,

Adam, Heather, and Sam

have come to a small tributary,

five miles shy of their intended target.

What do we want to do then, guys?

Do we want to go to this large body of water

where there might be a lot more food options?

You make a call.

Yeah, I have to say, like, I'm so dehydrated.

I'm like, I just need to think about making a fire

-and making water, so... -I'm down with that. If you want to do that,

let's just make a fire right here.

Yeah. Let's go for it.

We are nowhere near where we wanted to be tonight.

Honestly, right now, my priority is to get fire.

That's the main priority.

And to get water in us.

Like, our bodies are super dehydrated.

We're not used to this kind of humidity.

Very easily, someone could faint.

You know, very easily,

this could tip the balance of what we're used to.

I'm cooked, you know? Like, I'm, you know, I'm feeling it.

We're all feeling the heat,

Adam in particular, I think.

If we don't get water right now,

there's every possibility we could dehydrate

and we could suffer a heat casualty on day one.

Bloody hell.

My body is shutting down.

I can see you're hanging out your arse, mate.

Yeah, it's not good.

This challenge could have an abrupt and unfortunate end.

My body is shutting down.

We're all feeling the heat.

I can see you're hanging out your arse, mate.

Yeah, it's not good.

Adam is down more than I am.

This guy is a bushman.

And that shows you

how tough these conditions really are.

Come on, catch, you bugger.

We need to boil drinking water right now

or this challenge could have

an abrupt and unfortunate end.

-Ooh. -We got fire.

-Whoa! -Yes!

Okay, great. All right.

We're not there yet.

It's looking good, brother.

I got some of these, too.

Oh, yeah. Awesome. Thank you.

Adam, that's amazing.

Do you think we need to get anything to build a little shelter?

-Yeah... I think right now, honestly,

I'm not doing any more until I've had water.

I'm not out of the woods yet.

We need to boil that water.

At this stage right now,

nothing else is more important

than getting my body rehydrated

and leave shelter for another day.

That's got to be on the boil

-24-7, basically. -Yeah.

To the far south of the badlands,

Chris, Malorie, and Shell

hope that a large marsh 10 miles away

will make a first long leg of the challenge worthwhile.

Guys, there's a nice game trail right here.

I'd say right now that we have the energy,

we need to get as much ground covered as we could.

-Yeah, absolutely. -Yeah.

We just need to make sure we don't get dehydrated.

We've been traveling for a while now.

We still haven't had anything to drink.

But after dealing with my partner in the last challenge,

I can suck up pretty much anything.

I don't need you to be there telling me whether I can

and cannot do something.

You try to undermine every single thing I do.

Everything was difficult.

Every plan I had, my partner would just shoot it down.

And that was hell.

I'm sick and tired of pulling your weight.

Oh, really? You're pulling my weight?

You don't have to pull my weight.

I've never asked you to.

Okay, then you'll collect all the wood today

-since I collected all the wood yesterday? ...Whatever.

But some way, somehow, no matter the situation,

I will figure it out

and provide food for my team.

Oh, my gosh.

Catching piranhas.

Yay.

I got a fishy.

To be here right now,

I want to be considered an elite survivalist.

I want to prove that I'm a badass.

This terrain's a little rough right here.

The girls and myself, we're already depleted.

We're thirsty. We're tired. We're beat up. We're sore.

We're bug-bitten. We're all of this.

And it's only day one.

You guys see what I see?

Water!

Yay!

Oh, wow.

-Yeah. -So beautiful, guys.

We got water.

Possibly caiman and fish.

-Yes, absolutely. -Oh, my gosh.

Colombia's murky swamps

contain numerous species of fish and eel,

but also teem with swarming mosquitoes,

aggressive caiman,

and giant anaconda

that can grow to over 30 feet long.

Quite the killing zone in here.

We've got to keep our head on a swivel.

Definitely.

Damn.

-Y'all feel that? -Yeah, it's hot.

What's dangerous at this time of day,

this close to the equator, is the UV rays.

I know I've got burn,

and I've got more burns coming, I'm sure.

We need to get to where we're going.

Come on, guys. Let's go in here.

Looks like we're going into some shade.

-Whew. -Guys,

it's thick in here.

Ew. Oh, my God.

It just looks so snaky in here.

The environment has changed from

really thick, grassy area,

and now we're in the jungly jungle,

and it's just a breeding ground

for different bugs to be everywhere.

Colombian badlands has

everything that wants to bite you and eat you,

but I will bite back.

I'm from Idaho, and I'm a vet tech,

and I can find food anywhere I go.

I definitely want to hunt.

I'm not going to be, like, Suzy Homemaker

and staying at home boiling water and collecting firewood.

Oh, my God! We got a fish!

Look at this frickin' catfish!

There's leafcutter ants up here.

Ow! Yep.

-Anyone get you? -Yeah.

-Careful. -Ow. Those burn.

With sharp, powerful mandibles that

vibrate 1,000 times per second,

leafcutter ants

are ravenous harvesters of plant life

and deliver a painful bite when threatened.

There's a whole line of 'em.

Oh, my God.

God, they're everywhere.

Those are actually pretty cool.

They're one of the few animals outside of humans that farm.

They take those little leaf cuttings...

That's cool.

Except I think something just bit my vagina.

Is it just me or does it feel a lot hotter down in here?

-It feels hotter down in here... It's hot.

It's humid.

Is that a paw?

Oh, yeah.

That's a big paw print.

And it's fresh.

-Huh. Cats in the area? -Yeah.

All coming down here for the same reason we are.

Agua.

There's definitely wildlife here.

And now we know there's big old cats lurking around us.

Not to mention there's caiman all in this water.

I find myself being a lot more

-vigilant right now. -Yeah.

Oh, there's the water.

I feel like the ideal shelter spot would be

one that has some shade.

What do we kind of think about back in here?

An easy path to the water.

And it's also high up to where we won't flood out.

Yeah. Right. So I'll start clearing out a lot of the trees

if you guys want to clear the brush on the ground.

-Yeah. Good plan. -All right.

-It definitely looks like it opens up a bit... Good.

Yeah, this is drying out.

This is not too bad.

It's semi-flat right here.

-Close to the water. ...Yeah, it's close to the water.

So, get a fire going

so we can have some water

while we're building our shelter and...

Yeah. And almost like a quick, easy lean-to.

I'll start chopping beams.

Perfect. I will go get some water.

-I'll start gathering us some firewood... Cool.

Man, that hike, that was a beast.

And on day one,

I feel like I'm super dehydrated,

and I know how serious that can get.

So this fire to me is worth a trillion dollars.

It's definitely a shock

how harsh it is in this environment.

We are gonna need to make a fire soon

'cause I'm getting thirsty.

But I've always craved

pushing myself to points where I'm extremely uncomfortable.

In South Africa, I did 21 miles

in 21 days, and it was brutal.

It's definitely the hardest thing that I've ever done.

Man, this sun is just killer.

It's sucking the life out of me.

Now, the fact that we're going 40 miles,

I'm nervous how my body's gonna react to

being exposed to the elements for 40 days.

Feels kind of wet.

Everything here just feels wet.

Oh, my gosh, it's dark so early here.

We need to hurry before it's pitch dark.

This is such day and night

from the other place we were just at.

-So totally day and night... Totally different.

Super, super swampy.

Ugh.

Ew.

Ew.

Being right here in this deep water

that I can't see the bottom of

is literally, like, my worst fear right now.

I am facing my worst fears.

There are bubbles coming up over here, guys.

Give me a second.

It could be an anaconda underwater.

-What? ...Just give me a second.

It's okay. It's fine.

That scared the out of me!

Oh, here's some bigger water.

Yeah.

Camp in this area where it's flatter

and has a shelf coming down

so we can get water would probably be our best bet.

I agree. Okay.

Where do y'all think about wanting to put the shelter?

Right here is the flattest spot that I'm seeing,

this little sunny spot right here.

That's kind of what I was thinking.

Sounds good to me.

We're gonna have issues even with having

a fire starter, I think, getting fire here.

Guys, I'm not finding

a lot of real dry, good wood to use.

I think as long as we can

get enough to get some water going,

even if we don't have enough

to keep us going all night long.

We get the fire pretty much right off the bat.

The problem is

keeping the flame going,

because when you're in the jungle area, everything's wet.

It's like trying to light a pack of wet wipes

that you just bought from the dollar store.

We're constantly having to blow on the fire.

Constantly having to add things.

We don't have any coals built up yet,

just some hot grass basically.

Wow.

Yeah, this is not gonna be easy.

Come on, fire.

God damn, it just wants to go out.

What's the word?

Man, that's good.

That's the best hot water I've ever had.

-Hang on. -Yeah

The minute I had that first drink of water,

there was a relief, like,

you know, I'm back in the game.

Needed this pretty bad.

It's so hard to understand

how bad dehydration can be.

I couldn't believe how much water I had to drink

just to feel normal again.

Definitely didn't get as far as I wanted to today,

but if I had kept going,

this challenge would have been done for me.

You actually look much better for that, Adam.

Yeah, needed that.

This is gonna be a true test

of all the survivalists out here.

I don't care who they are.

-That's a big milestone. -Water. We needed that.

It's not even been 12 hours.

But as a survivalist, I can be quite adaptive.

Dare I say, a good all-rounder.

My first challenge

in a place we called Rattlesnake Canyon...

Oh

Look at the size of that

...me and my partner, we had to have each other's back

and protect each other's lives.

It's coiled, it's coiled. Get back, get back.

And I find I'm at my strongest

when I'm helping others.

-We got this, Lily. -Yeah.

Go, go, go.

Kill it!

I'm gonna keep dragging stuff back, though.

Thank you, man, I appreciate it.

But compared to where I'm from,

this place might as well

be a total alien planet to me.

Oh

Oh, you stinging little bastards.

-There is ants all over everything... Yeah.

Ow. You bastards.

All right, guys. Got a few palms.

Awesome.

These badlands

are nothing to mess with.

But I got a great group of girls out here with me.

We all have great skills.

There it is.

That is going to be huge for us out here.

We have fire, guys.

Good job.

Yeah, good job.

By the time we get it boiling, it's gonna be a while.

There's a bunch of termites

if you guys want some bug repellent.

The bug situation I'm already anticipating

is gonna be terrible because it is rainy season.

But one of my survival strategies

is thinking outside the box.

In South Africa,

acquiring food was very difficult.

-Badass. Different way of catfishing. -Yeah.

So I figured out

some new tactic to be able to get fish.

Yeah, yeah.

Yes.

One for me and one for my partner.

Termites, what you do is

you put your hand on a log crawling with termites.

So they're crawling all up on my hands and stuff.

And, uh, take the termites

that are on your skin

and you rub 'em on you.

It'll help repel some of the skeeters

and other bugs.

What we have here,

just a simple A

with three ridge poles.

So in Colombia, the weather changes

without any warning.

And we have no roof.

No roof plus rain equals

miserable naked people.

I think we're in for a long night

'cause this, no bueno.

-At least it's set for a little bit... Yeah.

I am happy we have fire.

I just hope we can baby it enough

to get at least one pot boiled.

Mm-hmm.

What do we want to plan for shelter-wise?

I know it's not super close to the fire,

but what if we did

something with these three trees right here,

we did some kind of roof in case it rains tonight?

-Something quick and easy... Yeah.

I'm happy with my partners so far.

Lynsey brings a lot to the table.

I like that she's got a good head on her shoulders

and she's not afraid to be herself.

-Vines. -Awesome.

Nathan is a quiet guy,

but I think he's got

the skills to pay the bills, and we are gonna need that.

Tonight's going to be hell.

Tonight's gonna suck.

Y'all,

we're absolutely killing it. I mean,

you really can't ask for much more on day one

than our beautiful frickin' shelter over here.

We've got fire.

We've already had one jug of that.

Day one was, like, super brutal.

All the heat absolutely dehydrated the crap out of me,

but I have a lot of confidence

in the people I'm out here with.

I think we're an incredible trio,

and that makes me pumped up.

All my jitters are day one.

-Yeah. -Like, who am I gonna be with?

Where are we gonna go? What are we gonna see? What are we gonna find?

Am I gonna have a shelter? Are we gonna get fire on day one?

Like, are we gonna get water? What if we get dehydrated on day one?

Like, all of those are laid to bed, or laid to grass.

Yes.

What you doing?

Oh, just chilling with some ants found in my butthole.

Today was a hard day.

-Mm-hmm. -Not gonna lie.

We got a lot of miles in.

I mean, we got the shelter up

for the most part.

And we actually have

water and shelter all on the first day.

And fire.

Day one of 40 in the books.

Only 39 left.

Yeah, we've heard a lot of noises out here.

I heard some baby caimans a little while ago.

In addition to the seeing jaguars.

We got to keep our eyes peeled and watch the ground,

watch the sky for rain,

the ground for bugs.

They don't call this the badlands for nothing.

-What? ...That was a big snort, that was.

Where is it?

Look. Look.

This thing is big.

Hey!

Oh, my gosh.

He's big. He's big.

Look.

-Look. -Hey!

-Oh, my gosh. -He's big. He's big.

Whatever it was, that was blinking...

in that corner of that bush.

-He's gone now? -He's gone now.

So, whatever he threw scared it.

Yeah.

Awesome night one.

Yeah, this is night one.

It's not what I anticipated.

And we got a little bit more of night left ahead yet.

Oh, you son of a bitch.

God damn it.

Oh, my God.

Ow. God damn it.

-You get bit by something, too? Yeah. -Yes.

-Mother... Me too, and it hurt.

I'm getting soaked.

I'm freezing.

Come on. Please stop.

Damn, man.

Big rainstorm.

I really hope it doesn't do this all night.

I don't know if I can handle that, to be honest.

It started raining, so we decided to

put together a shelter after all for us tonight.

It's a desperate emergency.

It's pouring right now.

We've got to protect the fire.

Without that fire, we are dead ducks in the water.

This place is hell on earth.

Right now...

Oh, y'all, it's been doing this all night.

It's just hammering down.

Kaiela's savoring

the little bit of fire that we do have.

It's been miserable.

Yeah, last night was probably

the hardest day I've ever had

on a challenge.

I get why people will tap

'cause of, like, bugs and rain.

Like, if I had to do this

for multiple days in a row, it would not be good.

I definitely got

maybe 20 minutes of sleep last night.

Cole and Andrew

have some meat on their bones,

and I struggle with staying warm.

I'm feeling pretty scared and a little doubtful

in my ability to finish a full 40.

So today we want to

beef up our shelter and waterproof it.

-So we're doing grass, right? -Yeah.

I'll, um, patch up this hole as best I can.

Cool. All right, I think I'm gonna

just go see if I can

see any palms that maybe

-I can get ahold of. -Yeah.

The nights always suck on these challenges.

Whenever I was in Africa,

you know, going eight days without sleep,

it was definitely something that I had to work through,

and was a difficult time for me.

Come on. Like, the wind is enough.

Ridiculous.

Sleeping is actually the suckiest part

of all of this.

The fear of having a lack of sleep is definitely there.

I don't want that to ruin my challenge.

It feels like we certainly got probed last night.

There was something stalking round.

-Yeah. -Yeah.

It's an eye-opener to how dangerous it is out here.

I think what was more intimidating was the fact that,

um, even with, like,

clapping and the noise and stuff,

it stayed there. Like, it took a lot of effort

to make it go away.

So I wasn't expecting that, you know?

Yeah.

I woke up last night

and one of the big cats had come into camp.

Well, they say if you see one,

chances are it's been watching you all day.

You know, it's hard to sleep when you have,

like, a predatory animal crawling around.

What's the next step for this morning?

Shall we get a little bit more firewood?

I don't know. I'm pretty keen

to get the shelter up right now,

you know, just in case, like, the rain keeps coming.

We'll just leave that structure there

while we build a new one,

but just continue with the other poles

-and make a real simple lean-to... Yeah.

Now, my next thing I've got to do

is catch us a fish.

Shall we hop to it?

-Yeah. -Boom.

Knowing that, you know,

we've still got a lot of ground to cover in this challenge,

we can't afford to build something absolutely huge,

you know, like the amount of energy that's gonna take.

So we've got to build something that's very usable

and is really gonna protect us,

but at the same time, you know, we've got to be sensible

about how much effort we put into it.

I really want something that's gonna wiggle in the water.

Looking for worms or crickets

or anything like that that I can use for bait

so I can try to get some protein.

What I don't like is how all the ants take over

everything and then it runs all the other bugs off.

Okay, I can't find bait, so I'm getting super frustrated.

There are fish everywhere, and I'm hungry.

And hunger is a hell of a motivator.

So we need to get some fish.

I'm gonna make a worm caller.

You take a stick, you make a bunch of notches in it,

and you put that stick into the ground.

You take another stick and you go up and down, and it's got vibrations,

and those vibrations

basically call worms to the top.

Practiced for generations

in the southern United States,

the vibrations of a worm caller

mimic the sonic frequency of a mole digging underground,

sending the worms upward for protection.

You know, this is kind of like redneck witchery at its best.

Right there.

Right at the very top.

Ding. Wormies.

Oh, there's one.

Ding.

Ooh, yes.

There's another one right there.

Three.

Four.

Time to go fishing.

Ooh. Okay.

Hopefully we will be eating soon.

That was one rough night.

Yeah, it was very rough.

Right now we're just trying to collect material

so that we can work together and build a shelter.

Hopefully we can make it comfortable enough

so that we can all get some rest tonight,

'cause if we don't get rest, it's gonna weigh on us heavy.

We're gonna probably need more palm leaves, too.

Yeah.

So we're out here right now in Caimanville.

I mean, check this out.

This is really stupid

and really dangerous right now,

considering we heard them last night.

And they weren't small.

And this is exactly where they're gonna be hanging out.

But there's chores to be done.

Oh

Wasps.

Oh

Ah!

Getting stung right in the head.

Ow.

Little bastards.

Oh, I do not like getting bit

while I'm trying to chop stuff.

Last night was brutal.

I'll be honest. I didn't think that

you could freeze in Colombia in the jungle.

When it starts raining

and you have no sun to heat you up

and the humidity goes out the window

and the wind starts blowing,

it gets cold here at nighttime.

It gets really cold.

Our fire went out. We were shivering all night.

We need to get fire today.

We need to get water.

And then we need to improve our shelter.

The roof held up, but I don't think a lean-to

in a rainy situation like this is gonna keep us going.

So we are putting together a piece of A-frame.

It's gonna come off of the front of our lean-to.

We plan on banana leaves coming down

and sealing up some of the outside edges.

It should give us more room to lay down,

and we can have a fire in the middle between us.

Look at that. It just looks fabulous.

Gonna build a platform

so we can sleep off the ground.

And we've decided to name this beauty

the Banana Hammock.

-Banana Hammock. -Yeah.

-Banana. -Banana.

Welcome to the Banana Hammock.

I need some water. I need a break for a second.

Yeah, for sure.

It's getting humid.

Last night was just brutal.

It gets very, very cold at night.

Very cold.

And now I'm just sweating all over everything.

The Colombia badlands are pretty bad.

-Oh, my heart's beating real fast... Yeah.

We have very little water left, so we're trying to conserve it,

just taking small sips at a time.

We've been exerting a lot and lot of energy

working on the shelter.

So hopefully we can get another fire going

and get the water boiling.

These bugs are driving me up a wall.

Go ahead and push over the magnesium.

Come on!

Come on, baby.

Oh, my God.

-Oh. -Nope.

-God damn it. -Oh.

Colombia is a wet vampire bitch.

We're in this wet, humid jungle.

There is absolutely nothing dry here to burn.

I'm gonna take a little walk up the trail

and see if I can find anything that's drier.

Watch out for jararacas,

a.k.a. fer-de-lance.

Yeah, definitely.

We just need stuff that you can make more,

like, get more surface area out of.

It needs to be more fluffy.

It needs to be more like a bird's nest.

I found some little roots.

I'm just trying to collect as much little tiny stuff that I can

that's bone dry, that feels like

it's been basting in the sun for a while.

Ow! Ow!

And once we get...

-Hold on. Hold on. -Oh

Lynsey, you okay?

God damn it!

Ow! Ow!

Something just got me good.

Lynsey, you okay?

Ant. Yeah.

Thank goodness that wasn't a snake.

Ooh. Little bastard!

A single colony of leafcutter ants can

number over 2 million strong,

and harvest enough leaves and plant matter each year

to cover a football field.

Lynsey is just not having a good day.

Little bastard. It certainly hurt.

I hate the jungle! Everything wants to bite me!

Hell yeah.

Look at this.

I feel like I'm in Jurassic Park.

That's wild.

Look at this.

Huh?

Oh, my.

Look at the size of this leaf.

Oh, this is what I needed.

Yeah. Now you, like,

-like shingles. -Like this.

And then we'll shingle it like this.

Yeah.

-Yeah, I think that's what we should do... Perfect.

Oh, look, are these being eaten?

Sure enough.

Like something's eating these leaves.

It's gotta be, like, a caterpillar or something.

That's wild.

These leaves were a great find.

They're gonna go a long way

keeping us dry at night.

-Game changer. -Yeah.

So, welcome to turtle camp.

If you look at it from this side,

it's a big old turtle shell.

I think that's gonna feel better than that grass.

-Yeah, for sure. -That grass is like... I think it's still

-imprinted on my ass. -Uh-huh.

Oh.

-Oh, my God. -Oh.

-That's so much better. -It feels like laying

-on a cold towel. -Yeah.

All right, we're under our reinforced shelter.

How are you guys feeling?

We've upgraded.

We have upgraded.

I got worms for bait.

I think something

was nibbling on the line.

Ooh.

I felt a little bit of a nibble.

Ooh. I felt its little mouth.

The turd.

Playing a little game.

Okay, guys. Hold on.

All right, we got a fish.

-Wow. -All right.

-Well, that's a decent fish. ...Hey, Heather, well done.

That's awesome.

We gotta celebrate. First fish of the challenge.

I caught the first fish. Boom.

It's a small fish, but it is protein.

-I think first bite to Heather... Okay.

I'm gonna give some more of this to him

because he's a bigger guy,

and I think he needs more meat than we do.

Thank you. I really appreciate that.

Guys, dig in.

-That looks lovely. -It's amazing.

We have our shelter,

our water, our fire,

and now protein.

-Heather, thank you so much. -Yeah.

-Thank you. Thank you. -Thank you so much.

Your persistence paid off.

Forty miles in forty days

just got a little tiny bit closer.

Now we're down to the eyeballs.

Oh, that's sodium.

-That's a lot of sodium. -That's my favorite part.

Oh, go for it. Yeah.

Oh, whoa.

Today, we killed it.

I'm just leaning over the edge of our sweet-ass platform here

in our sweet-ass shelter.

It was a good day today.

We got fire back.

It looks pretty awesome.

And I think we're all really tired and ready to get some sleep, though.

Pretty sure these ants are, like,

cutting down the shelter over here.

-Really? ...Do you see these holes?

-Yeah. -That's from them.

Jesus Christ, man.

Like, what do we do about it, you know?

We can't not have a roof.

Ow

We have rain.

And you can tell we're all thrilled about it.

We're just huddled up and riding out this storm.

We have shelter.

I'm shivering my butt off.

It's really, really cold right now.

Chris looks pretty miserable over there too.

Crazy thing.

We had an awesome bed

and an awesome roof, and the damn leafcutter ants

have come and chopped the majority of it down.

It's crazy to see how much of that

-they ate away. -Yeah, that's crazy.

They have pretty much destroyed our bed.

Just no sleep.

And poor Cole got the worst of it.

Part of me wants to move because this place

has been throwing things at us left and right.

But I don't necessarily think that

moving means that we're not gonna have

the same issues.

Um, I think the bugs out here are just out here.

And we do have plenty of resources here

that we haven't tapped into yet.

All right, ants. Get out of here.

Yeah.

Yeah, buddy.

Got a little ash ring.

Burn, baby, burn.

So if I can build up a solid pile of ash over here,

dissuade them from

coming into our shelter at night.

Sweet. That ought to help.

I feel like last night

was more brutal than the first night for me.

Yeah.

Day three. No sleep again.

And my body was so cold.

I was just non-stop shivering.

We all need to get some sleep

or it's gonna catch up with us.

I'm thinking I might want to build a reflecting wall

to reflect the heat back in.

That's a good idea.

I need to chop down something for a reflecting wall.

And I hope that

that will actually reflect a lot of that heat

back towards us.

And the plan is

four or five posts in the ground

and then fill it with some weaved palm.

From there, I'm gonna take some mud

and really patch in the reflecting wall.

So that'll hopefully reflect a lot of the heat

from the fire in and keep us all a lot warmer.

I built one of these in Africa and it worked out well.

It ain't pretty. But it's working.

You girls want to get in there.

I'll hand you the mud if you want to just start

massaging it all together.

So hopefully by closing that up,

that'll help keep us all warm,

keep the fire protected, and keep us

in a lot better headspace throughout the night.

We might be okay for now, right?

Last night I feel like was our best night yet.

We have a badass shelter

and we have water boiling

and we have fire going,

and it's overcast, but it's not raining.

It seems like it's great fishing weather.

I think the cast net is an item

that's well suited to this environment,

because all you've got to do is throw it

and you either have food or you don't.

Little guys.

I think this should be good for bait.

It'd be nice to have some jungle breakfast

this early in the morning.

Oh, they're biting.

Damn it.

He completely took my line.

The hook and everything?

Yeah, he completely, like, severed my line.

Now I've got to be careful

'cause I only have three small hooks.

Got him?

Got one.

Awesome.

Sweet.

I got us breakfie. Yeah.

-That's a wolf fish. -yeah.

Breakfast of champions.

-Look at this. -Nice.

Do you want to dispatch this one?

Go, caveman.

Break the spinal cord.

That was crazy.

The quickest way to dispatch a fish

is simply to bite it behind the head

and snap the vertebra.

It's quick and easy.

Of course you can taste a little bit of blood.

It's a little salty taste, but it's not a bad taste.

Protein on day three.

Save me the eyeballs.

The ants just being able to get up into our bed

is not a good thing,

so it's time to make a raised-platform bed.

Gonna weave a bunch of vines and stuff in it

and then stack a bunch of grass on top.

And lay a few leaves on there just 'cause they're

a lot more comfortable to lay on.

It's impossible to sleep

when you have 100 ants crawling on you at all times.

And I know from personal experience

that sleep deprivation can, like,

destroy your brain.

That's human. No one's above that.

So these raised beds,

they are gonna be a game-changer.

Ah

Cut the tip of my thumb off.

Oh, no.

Damn, dude. You're, like, covered in blood.

Can I get a medic, please?

Shot the tip of my thumb like an idiot.

It's not just a little cut on the outside.

It is the whole top of my thumb,

is now flapped open,

and you can see all the way down into my thumb.

It is disgusting.

And with this amount of blood loss,

I know this isn't just, like, wrap a leaf on it.

It's best to do a bandage.

-Okay. -Just to put pressure.

The proximity of Andrew's cut to his nail bed

prevents the application of stitches.

So medics opt

for a tightly-wrapped pressure bandage.

But the wound must first be cleaned thoroughly

to protect from infection.

That's a pretty good flap.

Yeah, yeah.

A survival situation like this for 40 days

is not the type of environment

you want to be down the use of a hand,

but my biggest concern is infection.

We're out here in one of the dirtiest places

where I should be keeping it clean.

And out here in one of the wettest environments

when I should be keeping it dry.

If we were in Africa,

I wouldn't worry about it as much,

you know, the infection and stuff.

But here in this moist-ass climate,

it worries me.

If we were in Africa,

I wouldn't worry about it as much,

you know, the infection and stuff.

But here in this moist-ass climate,

-it worries me. -Yeah. Yeah.

Always try to

have your hands clean, like, keep them clean.

That way you can avoid infection.

I think I'm gonna get nauseous.

Ah, crap, this is like

37 days, like,

not getting it wet and all that crap.

Ah, dang it.

Andrew is a big part of our team.

I feel for him,

and want to reassure him that

this isn't gonna change anything

about how we move forward as a team,

and we're gonna get through this

no matter what.

Damn it.

Back to work.

I wanna get a raised bed for sure.

-I just feel so stupid, man... Don't feel stupid.

It's gonna be okay.

Oh, there's one.

Ding. Here we go.

Heather Smith, worm caller, USA.

I got a good one.

-Yeah. -Oh, wow.

-Well, you know how to find them now... Yeah.

Every win that you have, you gotta

roll that into a bigger win.

We got one fish,

we gotta roll that into more fish.

You gotta have that energy.

And that energy's gonna come from the win.

And that win is gonna come from

what you do out here as a survivalist.

Let's make a fishing line.

So Heather was awesome enough to give me a fishing hook.

And I've got my paracord.

I'm gonna rig up a little fishing pole.

And it's time to get fishin'.

All right, I'm feeling good about the worm.

Back at home in Australia, if you head upstream,

that's where the fish tend to hang out.

So it's time to go explore.

Oh, wow. Look at the water.

Oh, yeah, this is looking good.

Huge, big waterfall.

This looks like the spot, I reckon.

So waterfalls can be pretty handy because,

you know, fish are gonna swim up the waterway.

And once they hit a waterfall,

they can't go any further,

so naturally, they have to pool up in that area.

And you know, hey, once they hit the waterfall,

they got nowhere to go, so they're gonna be hungry.

Yeah!

Another one.

All right, racking them up.

Sounds like Adam got something.

Yeah, the old saying is,

"When the fishing's good, keep fishing."

Number eight.

-It's a waterfall. -Oh, wow.

Wow.

We heard you yelling all the way over there.

I might have been catching a few fish.

-Oh, you me. -Oh, my goodness.

This spot's insane.

-Can I have a look in your bag? ...Yeah, mate.

Oh, my God, it's a fish market!

Got food, brother.

You're a hero, honestly.

-I cannot believe it. -Thanks, mate.

Let's go eat.

Thanks again, Adam.

Crocodile Dundee with no undies.

Heather finding the worms

and then working out how to catch the fish, like,

this is huge momentum for us.

But ultimately, I think to do 40,

we're gonna need more food.

We're gonna, we're like...

We are going to need something much bigger.

-Yeah. -Yeah.

So hopefully, like, this is gonna be the energy

that we can use to explore for something bigger.

I agree, 100.

That's a great idea.

Let's test this thing out.

-Give it a shot. -Oh, yeah.

Nice.

Whoa, buddy.

So good.

-That's amazing. -Yeah, that's freaking awesome.

She's beautiful.

Super stoked about my raised bed.

I hope it'll be great

keeping the bugs and the ants off

so I can get some good sleep.

Cool. Let's maybe go do a little fishing.

Yeah, we can go fish.

Go back to the pond that we came across before.

Be home before dark.

We'll be back in an hour.

With fish.

That's what I wanted.

This is what we're looking for right here.

This is our bait so we can catch some fish.

I think once I get ingrained with the land

and start to pick up the vibrations around me,

I don't see why we won't be eating every couple three days.

I definitely consider fishing to be a hunt.

And with my bow,

I can take stuff from the tops of the trees

to the bottom of the river.

Probably just start here, huh?

Let's do it.

Getting hurt today sucks.

It's very early.

There's a lot of work to be done out here

and this, like, forces me

to just kind of do very basic chores.

I want to be an awesome teammate.

And now with my hurt hand, I feel like I'm just

dead weight in our group.

And I hate that feeling. I hate it.

Dang it.

But the worst thing for me on any of these challenges was

choosing to leave when I tapped out in Africa.

Hey, boys. I'm tapping out.

I'm so sorry.

I'm so sorry for leaving you guys.

I'm always haunted

by leaving my teammates in that moment.

And I don't want to do that again.

Breakfie.

Let's cook some fish.

To be able

to catch something

on day three

is pretty frickin' badass.

Ready for some breakfie?

Hell yeah.

I feel like if we can continue to catch fish like that

every day, like,

we are just gonna kill this challenge.

No.

No.

What did you do?

Oh, I'm

-What happened? ...Terra, did you just cut your finger?

Cut my whole wrist.

Shut up right now.

I need a medic right now. Right now.

Oh, that's bad.

Oh, my God.

They're gonna pull you.

I need a medic right now.

Right now. God.

Look at that gash.

-It's bad, dude. -That's really, really bad.

Oh, that's bad. Yeah.

They're gonna pull you.

I can see, like, it looks like your tendon, like,

the fat and everything.

I'm seeing my wrist.

I'm seeing the blood everywhere.

First thing I think to myself

is, "Oh, God,

I'm gonna be tapped out on day three of the challenge."

So sorry.

That looks so painful.

Okay.

I was cutting firewood, and the knife glanced.

Terra is a strong person.

They busted ass for us,

and we've worked so well as a team.

And the thought of Terra having to go home, it's not fair.

I'm breathing.

-Okay, sit. -You want to sit? You're sweating.

-I feel like you should sit. -Well...

Are you gonna pass out?

-No, I'm not gonna pass out... Okay.

Okay.

Okay.

Okay?

And I'll continue the challenge

and not be able to do anything.

Yeah.

What do you want to do, man?

We'll carry you the whole way, dude,

until you can feel better again.

You would do the same for us.

-Then let's stitch it up and continue on... Okay.

Let's stitch it up and continue on.

Yep. And continue on.

-It's not the first time I've had stitches in the field... Hold.

-Okay. -Breathe.

I know that I'm taking this risk.

All I need is an infection to get in there, spread,

and it can literally kill me.

But in a survival situation,

you can't just go home.

You can't just call it a day because you got a boo-boo.

Oh

I want to be here.

I didn't come out here to leave on day three.

-I'm gonna be a burden... I don't give a

I'll carry you the whole way, man.

I'll help with everything I can, though.

-I'm not gonna just sit in the shelter... I know you're not.

-So... -I know. I know you.

Terra's down,

so that really puts the pressure on Lynsey and me

to exert a lot more energy.

But I think Terra has a lot of resilience

'cause that injury on the hand and arm,

I think most people would have tapped

no question, after that.

If you think about it in the real world,

you take stitches out in two weeks.

Two weeks is nothin'.

All three of us will go to 40.

Not one of us is going home.

We are passing that, all three of us, together.

Now we finish.

-You have 11 stitches. -11 stitches.

You badass

Are we about to get attacked by monkeys?

Nah.

There's a big fish right here.

Really?

Yeah. I'm gonna try and throw my line.

-Oh, I see it, I think. -You see him?

He's pretty close to the surface.

Put it right in front of its face.

-Yeah. -He's going for it.

Jerked it right out of its mouth.

I can't believe that.

I think I'm gonna

fire one of my bowfishing arrows.

Yeah, get him.

I'm stoked that Cole has the option to

bowfish on his bow.

He's a great hunter

and he seems super knowledgeable

when it comes to tracking animals.

It just makes him even more valuable out here.

It's gonna be a long shot.

Oh. Hit the trees.

Oh.

God, I'm gonna be so stoked when you get a fish with that.

If I didn't hit all these limbs right here.

Day three, uh,

this was the day on my 21-day challenge

where I got the crocodile.

Stay still.

Oh, my God.

-Oh, my God. -Yes.

Yes.

Oh, my God.

So,

it would be nice for us to get something to eat today.

Too high.

Oh, I see one out there.

-You do? ...I see him out there in the shade.

-Did you get it? -Nope.

This is not an easy challenge.

Whenever I first came into this,

I thought things would be different than they are.

I thought I would be able to showcase my skills like I wanted.

It's not easy in this environment.

Hmm. Getting murkied up now.

-We can call it. -Okay.

We sheltered in

right above the fire.

We've got this

mud-reflecting wall finished up.

I think, uh,

it seems to be working out pretty well.

We're kind of getting into the swing

of this Colombian badland thing.

What do you guys think?

-Yeah. -I think so.

-Yeah? -I think so.

We're safe and warm.

Bugs.

I am so eaten up right now.

You get bitten every...

second.

Our bodies are trying to get us to sleep

and trying to get us to shut off,

and we can't 'cause it's just

too painful to lay there.

You wake up immediately as soon as you get bitten.

We are being torn up.

I am completely eaten up.

My whole body itches so bad.

I want to just freaking itch my skin off.

I have welts all over my body.

Another sleepless night for us.

We've got to figure something out

'cause we can't not get sleep.

Yeah.

I just killed an ant.

Oh, God.

Yep.

Ow.

Ow. Ow.

I'm gonna get out of here.

The woodwork's over here.

You see those things?

Those are all ants.

We're just being absolutely torn down.

It's insane.

Jesus Christ.

This is a night...

This is like a horror movie.

Yeah, this ain't worth the pain,

to be honest with you, to say I've done 40, I mean,

this is brutal here.

I'm over this for sure.

This sucks, dude.

I honestly think last night was the worst night yet.

Yeah.

-That leaf was whole when you laid down. -Whole. Literally...

-I got this leaf at dark. -That was a hole leaf

when you laid down.

Can't outsmart them at all out here.

Like, putting ash around

and they literally find

little space that there's no ash.

I thought that the platform would help with

keeping them away, but, no, they are very relentless.

Last night I slept

probably five minutes at a time,

and then you get bit by an ant

and you've got to crush it or kill it

or move or something, and then,

you know, and then you doze back off

and kind of do it all over again.

It's dragging my mindset down.

I'm not gonna do this sleep deprivation thing again

like I did in Africa, not for 40 days.

It was one thing to squeeze it for 20 days. But...

I mean, like, I couldn't even, like, sleep last night.

I couldn't even move 'cause it hurt so bad.

Morale has been tough.

I can definitely see in Cole's demeanor

that he is struggling.

I'm starting to get a little nervous

if he is fully in this or not,

and Andrew is in so much pain.

We're going through hell...

literally.

This morning my wrist feels like it's

three times as big as it looks.

Um...

It hurts.

Yeah.

Terra is a strong person,

but I might have to mother Terra.

I might have to make Terra let me take care of them,

and I have no problem doing that.

I'm feeling it today.

Yeah, I am too. I feel you.

It takes a ridiculously

long amount of time to boil water and then cool off,

and by that time we're getting dehydrated.

Yeah?

What I'm looking for right now

is a place that's fairly flat,

that's fairly close to the water,

'cause I don't want to have to dig too deep.

A seep well is a primitive water purification technique,

which involves digging a hole deep enough to penetrate

a water table of a nearby stream or river.

As water slowly seeps in,

the natural chemical compounds of the soil

help to filter out any contaminants.

A seep well that is working

can give you a continuous source of fresh water

without having to boil it,

so it saves tremendous amounts of energy

and time from boiling water.

It's just something to make it easier to survive

while Terra's down for the count.

All right.

So I drank about a cupful of water out of there.

And I'll wait and see tomorrow

if I have any runs or anything.

If not, I think it'll be good to go.

Damn, everything's wet.

Are you okay?

So I'm going just breaking up kindling, like, tiny little sticks,

and one of them

snaps and hits me right on my hurt thumb.

It hurts so bad.

It's starting to bleed through my bandage.

It is bleeding through?

Now it's starting to.

Maybe they'll be able to

re-bandage it.

Picking up firewood,

that's about one of the only jobs that I can do right now,

and even that's hard with one hand.

You know, it's hard not to get in your head

and start thinking about things.

And I'm nervous that I will continue

to hurt my thumb over and over and over again.

The medical team arrives

to assess Andrew's re-injured thumb.

Without pulling my team down,

what do I do in this situation?

What is the best for me to hopefully

achieve my goal in reaching 40 days,

but also protect my body?

Andrew's cut has been reopened,

and must be thoroughly cleaned again

to reduce the risk of infection.

This is the craziest pain.

I cannot do this.

I just can't take it.

For me, a paradise is a kind of place

where we can get back to our earliest

primal beings.

-Awesome... Did you just get a nice fishy?

Two of 'em.

I can already feel

a change in me already.

Out here, you go kind of like primal and animalistic.

-Bite him. -I will bite him.

I'll bite you, too.

Ow.

There's something in there now,

like, it's stuck in my teeth.

Yeah, you got a scale in there.

I don't know how to get it out.

That was crazy.

I don't know too many people like Lynsey

that would do that back home.

My sisters probably wouldn't.

My teeth feel like they're off-center now.

I cannot do this. I just can't take it.

I think I'm gonna self-med-tap.

That sucks.

Yeah, it sucks.

That's a really bad cut,

and if it were me, like,

I would have a really hard time staying as well.

Like, I want you to take care of yourself.

But it just sucks.

This whole thing sucks.

Like...

I know that some people out here would

slice open their thumb and keep pushing on,

but I have 36 days ahead of me.

And not only that, I have all these miles to get across.

The thought of making this injury worse

by being out here in the elements

and the infection potential

makes me think I've got to walk.

And they won't say it,

but I will. It's best for my partners,

who are gonna have to pick up extra work.

Kat.

What's going on, Andrew?

I have to go.

I cannot be out here surviving for 36 more days

without a hand, and with this pain. I just can't do it.

I want to make sure you're comfortable with your decision.

Is this your final decision?

Yeah, yeah. For myself and my health,

this will be my final decision.

I feel awful. I feel like,

am I gonna regret this later?

Are people gonna

think I'm not good enough?

-I love you, buddy. -I love you, too, man.

And I always have that fear of

what people are gonna think about me.

And that's just something I have to live with.

Naked and Afraid is incredibly hard.

It's the Everest of survival challenges.

And XL just takes it above and beyond.

I came into this challenge

hoping things would go perfectly, right?

I wanted to prove I was tough.

But I wasn't able to pull it off.

I don't know, I'm just really bummed out right now.

You know, it's definitely gonna suck not having him here.

Super emotional morning.

It's definitely gonna change things for Cole and I.

Cole and I have both been struggling mentally already,

but I think it's time to really push forward

and try

and keep a good mentality,

um, going forward.

Because the second we start to spiral,

it's game over.

I might be gone for an hour or two.

Okay.

Well, that sucks.

Andrew just tapped.

Not something I was really expecting.

I thought for sure he was gonna

really try to hang in there.

I've definitely been in my head, too.

The situation

really just kind of motivates me to

go try to get something to eat.

I think once I get a win,

me and Kaiela will be in a better headspace.

We'll see what happens.

Blew it.

Oh, there he is.

He's way out there.

If I miss this one, I'm giving up.

Oh

Snapped my line.

There's no bowfishing anymore.

There's definitely a concern because, you know,

we have a long ways to go on this challenge.

In 40 days, we have to cover 40 miles.

And if you can't get some decent sleep,

and then if you can't feed yourself,

you're not gonna make it.

-Hey, girl. -Hey.

So I've been doing some thinking,

and, uh,

I'm gonna leave the challenge.

Like, why?

Um, this location's not gonna work.

It's just not gonna happen.

Wow.

I'm leaving behind Kaiela

because the bugs

and the situation out here is not good.

Unfortunately, you know, I do feel for her

that she's gonna be out here by herself.

But regardless if I was here or not,

I think the outcome is still gonna be the same.

I feel like her tap out is just coming right behind mine.

Stay strong.

Thanks. I'll try.

So, my other partner

just tapped,

and I feel like it's been

curveball after curveball.

And, um...

It sucks to feel, like, left.

I just don't know

what the rest of this challenge looks like for me.

But...

I am going

to keep pushing until I

am literally just, I can't anymore.

And, um,

if that means I have to do it alone,

then I will do it alone.
