When you think of a sport,
and there is one name

-[indistinct]
-that is the most synonymous
with that sport,

Tony Hawk is that.

He is the GOAT.

He is the greatest of all time
when it comes to skating.

I think it's actually
hilarious that still,
to this day,

we're going to meet him
at a skate park.

It's crazy to me that somebody
can just discover that

they have the ability to do
these unhuman things

on a board with wheels.

When you see him
flying around,

you know, letting go of
the board in midair and all,

I would never in
a million years be able
to do that, though.

Well, Tim films so much
of his stuff.

Over a decade now,
Tim's been working with him

and is with Tony through
everything.

Even when he had his injury,
he was there the whole time

helping him out.

Beyond just, you know,
filming his stuff,

just making sure he's there
if he needs anything.

It does sound like Tim
is one of the sweetest humans

you'll ever meet.

And a big part of Tim's job
is actually editing

and creating this content.

And he doesn't really have
a space to do that.

Well, Tony has Tim all set up.

So Tim's filming him
right now at the skate park

doing some tricks.

Yeah, Tim thinks he's at
a skate park this morning

shooting footage for Tony's
new documentary.

What he doesn't know is that
the TV crew is actually ours,

and Tony is really just
waiting for us
to surprise him.

but the subject of it
is solely you.

[Tony] Tim is a fixture in
the skate scene.

He's a street skater,
but he has such rich history

in skating and such
a knowledge of skate tricks

that he's actually given me
some great ideas of
doing stuff.

That's what makes him
so special.

He's always thinking,
what's next?

What could happen next?
And I'm thankful that

sometimes he chooses me
as his target,

even though I'm older
and I'm recovering from
a broken leg.

I'm still honored that
he thinks I'm capable of

the stuff that
he fantasizes about.

Well, Tim, we've been
working together for,

I don't know,
over 10 years now.

And everything that we do
is very meaningful to me.

You've set me on paths
to do new tricks that
I never even thought of.

You documented my recovery
from my broken leg.

This is true.

And I want to pay you back.

-You're going to pay me back?
-Yeah.

Tony and I speak
the same language.
I'm a skateboarder.

I want to work in
skateboarding,

but I never imagined that
I'd be working side by side
with him.

That's like every skateboarder
filmer's dream.

I broke my femur
a couple of years ago,

and I had a bad recovery.

And he documented that pain.

I mean, that was really like,
it was painful for me.

It was painful on
my mental health.

I think he helped me
to realize that I had
a long way

to go and to accept
the process.

It took about a year
and a half to really get back

to what I considered
a professional level of
skating.

And he covered all that,
so I was thankful he did,

and it felt very invasive
and almost too vulnerable.

But I'm glad that he believed
in it enough to stick with it,

because now I feel like
it's an important piece
of my story.

Tim is a solid friend,
and so I just feel

really lucky to have him
in my life.

I was with Tim when he bought
his house, actually,

and I know how much
he was saving

and how much he risked
to get it.

And not coming from California
and realizing quickly

how expensive it can be,
I fell for him.

And I was always hoping that
maybe I could do something

to... you know, help out,

but just make it
more manageable.

Well, Tony was saying that
you might have a shortage of

usable square footage,
particularly private space

-Yes.
-for your work.

And so he sent me photos
of your garage,

and we thought we could do
something pretty epic

that might make life
a little bit easier for
working at home.

That would be incredible.

I had dreams for that spot.

I was gonna make it
into an editing studio,

podcast studio thing.

You need to have a space
that is perfectly set up

for you to do what you do.

[Drew]
We are going to make this
space perfect for you.

You mean a lot to Tony,
and this is really exciting
for us

to be a part of giving back
to you

and how you supported him
for so long, so...

Dude, I don't know
why you chose me.

to have this as a workspace,

So I'm noticing some
serious problems in here.

There obviously is an issue
with the roof.

We would want to check that
out and make sure that

there's not going to be
an issue with soft spots, rot.

It should be totally
waterproof.

But even as a garage,
functioning as a garage,

look at the track.

is really dangerous.

-Is it possible to replace
that door?
-A hundred percent.

In fact, if we want
to finish this into

a really great usable space,
I would get rid of the track,

get rid of the door,
just do like
a carriage style door.

Well, you can see there
was probably something
parked here

and leaking at some point.

We are going to have to do
some slab work because

you can see the slab is in
terrible shape.

It feels like a sweat box
in here too, though.

It's not even a hot day
and it's already warm in here.

Yeah.

We would definitely want
to put an air conditioning.

What else do you think
you would want in here?

Well, I think something
to display his most

precious items.

I don't know what those are
with all this.

your research, by the way.

And then we can figure out
a way to do it tastefully.

But most definitely some
sort of editing bay.

You know, if there's a way

There's no insulation
at all in here.

Insulation's going to help
with the sound.

In fact, what we could do
is we could do
an acoustic board

on the walls or even on
the ceiling so it'll really be

a true studio as well as
a great working space.

What is the stuff that
you would need to have

right around you to make sure
that it's a functional
office space?

Uh, monitors, speakers.

What would be cool is
if the editing,

if the monitors are relatively
small for the editing suite,

then he can throw it

-to really get a feel of what
it looks like.

So, all right, as far
as aesthetic,

-what do you think for Tim?
-[Tony] Tim is a minimalist.

Well, yeah, this is
the opposite.

I mean, I don't think this
reflects Tim's personality.

-It's just his collection.

modern?

Mid-century modern.

I feel that over here,
if we created sort of

a lounging space,
somewhere to bring in people

to look through edits.

I do think it would still be
important to keep

the natural light
coming through.

So when we do put in
new doors,

I would do a style
that still has the windows,

still has some light.

Before we wrap this up,
I think it's important.

You're renowned for just

It's our first day of demo,
and even though we decided on

a three-week timeline,
this garage, while small,

still needs a lot
of attention.

And even though we know
the garage is detached from
the main house...

Whoa, what is going on here?

That was Jonathan's look
in high school.

-Oh, yeah.

Tony got Tim a rental
to make sure that

there was no peeking
at the progress.

You got the sledgehammer.

So one thing I will point out,
we do not want to hit

the exterior wall,
because that will damage
the exterior stucco.

So it's safer to bust it

And if you go vertical

about buildings from this era

is they did build them solid.

this old garage door

that will never be used again
piece by piece,

or we could just cut off
a couple of bolts

and just rip
the whole thing down.

I really have a newfound
respect for people

who do roofing,
because that is serious labor.

We'll actually be done this
in no time.

Good. I mean, I'm glad to be
part of the process, honestly.

You know, even though
what I'm doing feels

somewhat minimal
compared to the
magnitude of it,

I'm just happy to have
my hand in it.

In reality, I think it's going
to mean a lot more to Tim,

that you physically got in
here

and that you didn't just
tell us to do it.

One day is rarely enough time
to get demo done on

older structures,
and this garage is
no exception.

So Drew, myself,
and our LA crew are here

super early to deal with
this dilapidated front section

of the concrete floor.

This is literally,
like, crumbling.

So this is the thickness,
two inches.

Minimum we would have to
do here would be four inches.

It's become clear that
this front section of

the floor was an old repair,
so we're going to need
to patch

that by pouring
a new slab.

And outside, our team
is replacing the rotten edges

of the roof and closing up
the soffits to protect it

from the elements.

And inside, our framers
are carefully working around

that removed
front concrete section
to install new ceiling joists.

The old ones were over
three feet apart,

and today's LA building code
requires no more than
16 inches.

And while all of this is
happening,

Tony and I are going
to be out back landing bolts,

as Tony would put it,
on the design for Tim's
new space.

Well, you're not planning
a ramp today.

So this is our garage,
existing garage door,

If you were going to break
down the space before

what would you do?

Well, I think that there
should be the desk slash
studio here somewhere,

the peninsula coming

[Tony] Yeah, I'm not sure how
deep or if that should be
curved or not.

I think the L-shaped desk just
gives Tim more options

of which way he wants to
face his monitors,

if he has people there or not.

It gives them so much
flexibility.

Something here to set up
skateboards or work on
skate stuff,

like a workbench,
I don't know.

How much time would he spend
using a workbench versus

wanting to have the space
clear and open?

Because my whole thought is,

it starts to get cluttered
if we're trying to fit in
too much stuff

and we permanently have it,
but we could do some sort of

a workspace that
collapses away.

Oh, that would be way better.

Because, I mean, really,
you work on a skateboard for
10, 15 minutes and then...

-And then it's gone.
-Yeah.

-All right, so then a small...
-Yeah, so some workbench

that collapses, right?

I don't know how I would draw
that, but...

And then maybe a sitting
area here, like a couch.

Yeah.

Because you could have people
come in

and they could help him edit.

How much do we want to lean
into skate culture versus

-just kind of teasing with
some art and stuff?
-I don't think--

Yeah, I don't think Tim
would want that.

That cliche, really.

He loves skating,
but I just don't think

-he wants themes like that.

We could probably, like,
hint to it in some of
the woodwork,

because I do have
a lot of samples for us
to look at here.

So flooring.

So we have the option
to fix up the slab.

We can do luxury vinyl plank.

I would go more towards this,
especially if you're doing

the wood vibe
with everything else.

-You like this style of wood?
-Yeah, I hope so.

And what I love about this
is it no longer feels like
a garage.

-It feels like indoor space,
an office, a ramp.
-Right.

Yeah, this is what you guys
are making ramps.

-Look at that. See that?
-Yeah, perfect.

And this is a really,
really durable material.

-So this would last way longer
than a real wood on the floor.
-Okay.

If we want to do a little bit
of something special in there,

we could take the back wall
where maybe we're mounting
the TV,

maybe we're mounting
the monitors,

and cut in what looks
kind of like a quarter pipe
or something.

Oh, yeah.

-That'd be kind of cool.

I think it would be a subtle
nod to skating, but not...

a skate park.

For the back wall up onto
the roof,

how cool would it be
if we took the acoustic

wood slats right up
the back wall,

right across the roof,
and the sound would be
incredible

-in there because this would
absorb a lot of it.
-Yeah.

I think sound dampening
is a must,

especially when you're doing
editing a studio.

You don't want to always be
wearing headphones,

and you want to hear it
as someone who is

actually watching it
on their screen would hear it.

Are there any of these tones
that you think Tim would like

if we kind of play
around with?

Um, I worry about the dark
just because it's so dark
in there,

and I know you're going
to bring light in from

the door in the garage,
but I still feel like

it could use all the help
it could get.

So keep the light tones
up top,

-Uh-huh.
-and then something with

a little more depth
down below.

-All of a sudden,

when you see this
pulling together,
what was a dark...

-damp garage.
-Yeah.

Now all of a sudden,
it's going to be warm,

inviting and cool.

We'll start the transformation
from the outside in.

To ensure the structure
is sound for years to come,

we'll add an insulated roof
to regulate the heat inside,

functional carriage doors to
replace the current decaying

pull down, and finish with
a fresh coat of paint.

Inside, we'll start from
scratch,

repairing the concrete slab
so it's prepared for
our stylish

and durable
vinyl plank floors,

followed by all new insulation
and drywall.

Soundproof panels will cover
the ceiling and the back wall

to dampen the decibels
when Tim's editing,

while a sleek wood panel wall
with skate ramp-like curves

will boast an integrated
workbench so Tim can repair

and service skateboards
anytime.

On one side, we'll maximize
the tight space

with a custom L-shaped desk,
perfectly sized

for his editing equipment.

While on the other,
we'll create
a high-style lounging area

that will flex for hosting
clients and friends.

[Tony] This looks amazing.

The fact that you could throw
all this together

-and make it a reality,
I'm very impressed.
-I live to please.

I don't do this for a living,
but I do know that

if you paint the garage,
it's gonna conflict with
the house.

Well, it depends on what color
you choose.

-Or...

the house, too?

Three weeks and you wanted
to paint the whole...

I had a feeling something
was coming.

Yeah, we could,
as long as we're far enough
ahead on here,

I think we could pull
a crew in, paint the house,

paint the garage,
make everything work together.

It's going to look like
a million bucks.

Tim, he's given me
so much through,

especially through
his more recent years

when I was going through
all my challenges
and fixing up his garage.

I mean, really
that's the least
I could do for him.

This is like the perfect way
to give back.

that framing is complete,

the elements that

will bring this garage
to life.

All the necessary electrical
that is needed for

Tim's editing suite
is being run.

While out back,
work has begun on putting

an end to that sweatbox vibe
as we start to prep for

the new air conditioning unit.

And to keep Tim's office
even cooler,

we're laying down
a plywood roof decking

with a radiant barrier
that will bounce heat away,

keeping the cooling
costs down.

Up front, the hole in the slab
has been fitted with
a rebar cage for strength,

so now we can pour
the concrete.

So while the floor cures,
I'm going to see a friend

who builds furniture and art
out of skateboards

because I have a vision
for Tim's desk.

Can I just point out,
you're living my dream
right now,

because my dream is to have
my own wood shop.

-How did you even start this?
-Yeah, yeah.

So I'm a woodworker.

My dad was a woodworker,
and I would watch him

in the garage and get yelled
at for holding the board wrong

on the table saw,
and now I'm able

to build things that
I want to build.

You know, so
I'll see something I like,
and I can build it.

-Why skateboard decks, though?
-The colors.

The colors are mind-blowing.

So this is probably about
20 different skateboards,

and the colors in there,
you just don't get that with

normal wood at
the hardware store.

So skateboards are
seven layers of maple veneer,

and skateboard manufacturers
will dye between

two and three layers in there.

And so along the edge,
you get to see a cool pop
of color

while you're doing
your cool tricks.

And so for us,
we can use it,

and you get
really cool colors,

-and you get cool,
usable lumber.
-Amazing.

Yeah, so I made this guitar
out of skateboards.

-This actually plays
everything?
-It actually plays.

-I don't play it,
but it plays.
-Oh my gosh, this is amazing.

-Yeah, yeah, thank you.
So it's 45 different
-Wow.

skateboards went into that.

So skateboards just like this
that kids did kick flips

and pop shove-its on,
I turned them into art.

So with a skateboard,
there's concaves everywhere.

There's a dishing this way,
and then there's curves with
the tail and the nose.

And so I love
this middle part,

which is nice and flat
and straight.

And so if you cut your strips
out of the middle,

then you get nice,
flat strips.

And so this is a bunch of
middle parts put together.

Oh, so you cut them
all into strips.

I don't know why I was
thinking you just, like,

wedge together a bunch
of boards and do it all.

-So you do it in...
-Individually,

I take the grip tape off
and sand it and cut them up
into strips

-and then work
with them, yeah.
-That's wild.

So that's why I love the idea
of what you do.

We can create this
incredible desk

that is kind of an L-shape.

That's where he's going
to have all his equipment

because he edits a lot of
the videos that Tony does.

And just that little subtle
detail is going to be a nod

to skateboarding without it
being in your face.

If you figure
we're doing
an L-shaped desk...

-Yes. Check this out.
-Can we miter
the lines as well?

I made us a visual aid
to help us decide this.

So here's our L desk, right?
We can either orient it

to where the skate strips
are like this,

but I feel like that's for
an accountant,
vary by the book.

I think Tim is a little
more risk-oriented.

So this way is kind of cool,
a little more dangerous,
I feel.

Now, if we did it on
the angle,

which I love the sound of,

it might throw off
the symmetry in the room.

So let's actually see this

This is the outline
of the garage.

This is the garage door.

So we have on this wall here
is where we have

the wood slats coming up
and over the ceiling.

So, I feel like I like
the idea of the striations

-going in that direction.

And then we miter.

I don't know how well
we can line them up.

in this direction.

Yeah, so we'd have them
go like this, right?

-And then this.

How many deck boards do
you think it's going to take?

For this desk
and this orientation,
I would say

it's going to be anywhere
from 75 to 100 different
skateboards.

Yeah, this is by far
the biggest thing
I've ever done.

Amazing.

I'm very excited to see this
come together.

and we've reached
a big milestone inside

Tim's garage, electrical
and framing passed
city inspection.

So insulation and drywall
are a go.

And since we can't waste
even a second on
this three-week reno,

our roofers have been hard
at work up top.

We need that roof
done today if we're going

to stick to the schedule.

If you line up with that
bottom row right there.

And thankfully,
Tony is here to help.

Once you get it nice
and level and real tight,

like that, the trick with this
is once you depress it

and it turns it on,
you can literally just...

I remember doing that
with my skate ramp.

These things are fun.

I've never installed shingles
before.

The most woodworking
experience I have through

my life is building
skate ramps.

And I've built my share of
them, big ones.

And so that is the only way
I can equate to anything that

we're doing,
including doing shingles.

You want to make sure
they're very precisely laid

and there isn't too much
space in between them,

but a little bit of space.

And so I identify with that.

I heard you say something
about 30 years.

-Is that actually
the lifespan?
-Yeah.

So you pick the shingles
based on the material

and based on how long
you want them to last.

These are really
good shingles.

These are 30-year shingles.

because now that
we've enclosed an attic space,

before it was just all open
right up to the underside of
the roof.

Now that we've enclosed that,
we still have to ventilate
the attic space,

otherwise you can trap hot,
humid air,

and that breeds mold,
and can also make it

so it's less efficient inside,
it would stay warm inside.

So what happens here,
it just bends over the top?

Yeah, so we'll end up
going over,

and then we have a cap piece
that goes across
the whole thing.

The great thing is all
the extra steps we're taking.

Tim never has to worry
about anything.

Temperature is the big thing.

really comfortable.

There's no sense in making
a place pretty

if it's not also going
to be efficient.

It's now our third
and final week,

and even though our team is
working around the clock,

the finish line still seems
so far away.

So today, we are balancing
some major installs.

Now that the plywood base
for the feature wall
has been installed,

as well as the new
vinyl floors,

we can assemble
our custom wall panels.

However, our heaviest install
has to be the solid

wood carriage doors.

Are you ready for

They're strong enough
to keep Tim's space safe
and secure,

but stylish and functional,
so he can just open both up

and let some air in.

Meanwhile, across town,
Andrew is busy building
Tim's desk.

He's already cut about
100 skateboards into strips.

Now he's begun pressing them
together for the final shape.

But back at the house,
we have our very own
woodwork to do.

I want to build this
feature wall before

the end of the day.

And luckily for me,
Tony has built an insane
amount of skate ramps

over the years, so this
should be pretty easy for him.

I'm not going to lie,
it makes things so much easier

when somebody knows
how to use power tools.

Um, I got the first bit
a little bit wonky,

but I didn't go too far off.

The good thing is,
if you're going to make
a mistake,

-do it onto the waste side.
-I did go that way, yeah.

-So all of this.
-I'm used to a circular saw,

so I was kind of waiting
for that pressure,
and it never came.

Oh, no. Yeah, yeah.

No, this is perfect,
because any of this
we can sand down.

As long as everything
lines up, our puzzle pieces
go in.

Glue, tack.

I love the subtle variation,
not only from the direction

of the grain, but also
the walnut to the white oak.

Well, it very much looks like
when you cut ramp templates.

So that's
a transition template.

And then the discarded
pieces look like this

and look like this.

So I'm used to seeing those
all over the ramp site.

So you're saying
we're successfully giving

some kind of skateboard
culture aesthetic.

Oh, for sure.
That's the first thing

Tim's going to notice is, oh,
it looks like a transition.

-Amazing. Yeah.

When we're done,
we'll do a clear coat

-on everything
and seal it all together.
-Awesome.

I love the wood inside
because it does remind me

of skate ramps.

It just feels like
a skate space.
You know what I mean?

Dude, look at this.

It's not my first rodeo.

Man cave, no,
it's it's a ramp cave.

You'll notice some of
the detail like

how there are no knots in
any of this wood.

I's called rift sawn,
but it's a more beautiful
aesthetic

for finished woodwork
because you don't have
all those knots.

-It's just a clean
repeating pattern.
-Yeah, it's amazing.

Another thing I love
to incorporate

are hidden hinges
when you open this up.

-This will hide.
-Oh, wow, that's next level.

That fold-down bench,
so he can work on decks here.

Chucks and wheels.

Because it's not something
that he needs all the time,

when he's done with it,
tuck that away.

Boom, this is gone.

Yeah, I think it's perfect,
the idea that he can
put it down

when he needs it,
he can do whatever he needs
to do

on his skateboard for
a few minutes

and then put it back up
and have all that room.

I'm a big fan of hidden
secret rooms,

hidden hinges,
all that kind of stuff.

Let's get this one on,
then we can measure
for the next one.

I just think the workstation,
it's going to be much
more open

than anything
he's had in the past.

Much more space.

And I feel like
you'll do better work

with that inviting
environment.

And also the idea that
it's all so skate-centric.

I wish surfacing a ramp
was that precise and easy.

It makes it look easy when
everything fits perfectly.

It's going to happen.
Trust me, before we get

to the end of the wall,
I guarantee you

there's going to be something
that we miscut or mismeasured.

We're so close to
the finish line,

but have so much still
on our punch list.

Inside, we're installing these
stunning sound dampening
panels

to eliminate reverberation
and exterior noise.

Before we paint outside,
our stucco masters

are blending old and new
around the carriage doors

and the side door for
a seamless finish.

And in order for us
to finish this transition

from single-car oven to
comfortable studio,

we're installing
a state-of-the-art
air conditioning system.

So when we put this down,
the condenser sits on top
of this,

and then it'll look nice
and clean.

And then we'll fill around it
with the decorative gravel.

Dump that in.

Anywhere where
we're a bit high here,

we'll sort of have this down.

[Tony]
This is decorative gravel?

Yeah, just basically just
to fill it

so we don't see the dirt.

Dirt's not attractive,
but the gravel will be nice
and clean.

Are you going to finish
packing this all down?

-I'm going to go grab Josh
and bring the condenser in.

As soon as Jonathan handed me
the gravel,

I thought, please,
let's keep all this
contained in

one area, because
I do not want this anywhere

where a skateboard wheel
is going to touch it.

Let's just say he did
a generous pour,

and now there's debris.

And now we're at risk
as skateboarders.

These rocks are a doomsday
for skateboarders,

because your wheels hit it,
and it comes to
a screeching halt.

We call it a rock fart.

-Oh, no.
-Grrr.

-And then, boom.
-And then you just eject.

Just because
your tamping skills

are inadequate,
don't blame others.

Okay.

[Tony] My worst experience
with a rock fart

was actually at a skate park.

So I'm actually going
down a ramp,

and I was about to hit
another ramp with

substantial speed,
and I got a rock fart

just before I got to the wall.

So it forced me to stop
and smash into the wall

like a bug on a windshield.

I feel like that's
the worst-case scenario
for rock fart.

-This thing looks high-tech.
-Yeah, it's state-of-the-art.

So when you think of,
well, if I turn
my air conditioning on,

I don't want it to stay on
when I'm not using the space.

It's wasting money,
wasting energy.

These systems also incorporate
an intuitive technology

that knows when
you leave the room.

It learns your patterns.
So super, super efficient.

So remotely control it,
not just from your own Wi-Fi,

but actually when you're away
from the house?

-Yeah.

I think that all of
the improvements
to the roof are

going to help with
the comfortability of
the space.

With the airflow,

always a priority,

the main house into the mix.

And although I'm glad he did,
because it will look awesome,

it's definitely going
to eat up all the extra time

who delivered Tim's stunning
one-of-a-kind skateboard desk.

The whole aesthetic
is much different now.
